Cover Story: Oscillatory zoning occurs in numerous minerals and consists of an alternation in the chemical composition of discrete growth shells that resembles tree rings. Zoning in minerals contains a wealth of information concerning their fluctuating conditions of formation, which is used to elucidate the thermal history of rocks. This image shows zoning of Ti atoms in a garnet. Our paper shows that erythrite contains growth oscillatory zones and examines two vivianite-type solid solutions. View the paper
