Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Title: Coupled extreme weather and marine events in summer 2016: Anomalous hydrographic conditions in the Pacific shelf waters off southeast Hokkaido, Japan

Authors: Kuroda et al.

Summary: This manuscript describes the extreme weather and marine events that occurred concurrently in the summer of 2016. This manuscript uses a variety of observations (ship based, satellite) and modeling experiments to understand how the extreme weather and marine conditions impacted the hydrographic conditions in the coastal shelf waters. This manuscript is well written, covers potential limitations and does a good job describing the results. With some minor clarification, this manuscript should be considered for publication.

Specific comments:

Figure 3b: Flip the color bar anomaly so more precipitation is blue.

L463: Can you elaborate on how you defined the S1, S2, N1 and N2 regions?

L467: Does the large fraction of particles occurring in S2 have to do with the size of the region, especially in comparison to S1?

L467: Are the results in this section region dependent? If you changed the boundaries or used less regions, would the results differ greatly?
