Cover Story: Selective mutism (SM) is a rare anxiety disorder in childhood that is characterized by persistent avoidance of speech in select situations. Cognitive-behavioral approaches used to treat social anxiety have been supported as effective for treating SM. However, given the rarity of the disorder, there is little research on the efficacy and effectiveness of treatments specific to SM. This study examined the adherence of implementation, effectiveness, and acceptability of a condensed, 16-session version of the first manualized treatment for SM, Integrated Behavior Therapy for Selective Mutism (IBTSM; Bergman, 2013). Five children diagnosed with SM received 16 sessions of IBTSM while symptoms of social anxiety and speaking behaviors were monitored closely over time. Treatment effects were examined via a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design. View this paper
