Bridging the Gap: Smart and Sustainable Innovations in the Construction Sector
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
To boost productivity and meet global environmental goals, the construction industry must embrace automation and the circular economy. While other sectors have rapidly adapted, construction presents unique challenges that require innovative technical solutions. A "Smart" construction framework utilizes advanced sensing, 3D printing, and data-driven design to eliminate material waste at the source. When coupled with "Sustainable" practices, such as the development of low-carbon binders and the recycling of demolition waste, these technologies create resilient infrastructure. This Topic seeks to explore how these dual pillars can transform the built environment from a carbon-intensive sector into a cornerstone of the global green transition.
We are inviting submissions for a new Topic focused on the transition to a smart, resource-efficient built environment. Key areas of interest include the following:
- Automated construction and 3D printing.
- Next-generation eco-friendly construction materials.
- Construction waste recycling and circularity.
- AI-driven technologies in the construction sector.
We welcome research that not only introduces new technologies but also addresses the specific hurdles preventing their widespread adoption. Join us in defining the future of sustainable construction.

Preprints.org is a multidisciplinary platform offering a preprint service designed to facilitate the early sharing of your research. It supports and empowers your research journey from the very beginning.
MDPI Topics is collaborating with Preprints.org and has established a direct connection between MDPI journals and the platform. Authors are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity by posting their preprints at Preprints.org prior to publication:
- Share your research immediately: disseminate your ideas prior to publication and establish priority for your work.
- Safeguard your intellectual contribution: Protect your ideas with a time-stamped preprint that serves as proof of your research timeline.
- Boost visibility and impact: Increase the reach and influence of your research by making it accessible to a global audience.
- Gain early feedback: Receive valuable input and insights from peers before submitting to a journal.
- Ensure broad indexing: Web of Science (Preprint Citation Index), Google Scholar, Crossref, SHARE, PrePubMed, Scilit and Europe PMC.
