Ageing Well in a Globalised World: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Innovations in Health Care, Policy and Practice
Topic Information
Dear Colleagues,
Population ageing represents one of the most profound demographic shifts in the 21st century. Advances in medicine, public health, and living standards have contributed to increased life expectancy and improved health across the life course, resulting in a compression of morbidity and a growing proportion of individuals living longer, healthier lives. In this context, ageing well refers to maintaining quality of life, functional independence, and physical, mental, and social well-being throughout older age.
Globalisation has further amplified these trends. While increased longevity was historically concentrated in high-income countries, many low- and middle-income regions are now experiencing rapid gains in life expectancy. This shift is leading to an expansion of older populations worldwide, including a significant rise in the numbers of octogenarians, nonagenarians, and centenarians. As a result, health and social care systems must adapt to support longer life spans characterised by diverse health needs, multimorbidity, and varying socioeconomic conditions.
Ageing in a globalised world is shaped by a complex interplay of economic, political, environmental, technological, and cultural determinants. These drivers influence access to healthcare, health inequalities, and the lived experiences of ageing populations. From a healthcare perspective, this evolving landscape requires innovative, integrated, and person-centred approaches across a range of settings. Addressing the challenges associated with ageing populations also necessitates collaboration across disciplines, including clinical medicine, public health, social sciences, health policy, and technology.
Innovations in healthcare delivery, digital health, policy development, and community-based interventions are increasingly recognised as key enablers of healthy ageing. However, ensuring that such innovations are accessible, equitable, and responsive to diverse populations remains a critical challenge. In particular, age-sensitive approaches to globalisation can help address emerging inequalities and promote inclusive systems that support ageing populations across different contexts
This Topic provides an interdisciplinary platform for exploring innovative responses to the challenges and opportunities associated with ageing in a globalised world. We welcome contributions that examine innovations in healthcare technology, policy developments, and clinical practices that support healthy ageing across community, primary and hospital care environments. Submissions may include original research (qualitative or quantitative), case studies, reviews, and commentaries. We particularly encourage collaborative and cross-national research, as well as contributions from underrepresented regions.
