The mental health of young people has increasingly emerged as a public health priority due to the growing prevalence of mental health problems during adolescence and early adulthood. The literature has identified community-based programs as effective strategies for promoting well-being and preventing psychological symptomatology. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the impact of the interventions provided by junior psychologists working in the Youth Health Offices of the Cuida-te Program of the Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ) on the quality of life, well-being, and mental health of Portuguese youth through a pre- and post-intervention analysis. A total of 1164 young people, aged between 12 and 29 years old, participated across three editions of the program. Self-report instruments were used to assess the quality of life, the well-being, and the psychological symptoms (stress, depression, and anxiety) of the participants. The results revealed statistically significant improvements between pre- and post-intervention assessments, including increased quality of life and well-being, as well as reduced levels of stress, depression, and anxiety. These findings were observed among both female and male participants and across different age groups. Non-binary participants showed less pronounced results, although with no statistically significant differences identified, suggesting the need for more research with larger samples and for inclusive interventions tailored to the specific needs of sexual and gender minorities. Overall, the work carried out appears to constitute an effective and cost-effective community-based response for the prevention of mental health symptoms and the promotion of mental health in adolescents and young adults, reinforcing the importance of permanent, accessible, and inclusive public policies. Relative age effect (RAE) and biological maturation can significantly impact athlete selection. This study examined the presence of RAE in youth team invasion sports and assessed whether the timing of maturity influences body size and lower-body explosive strength. Athletes were grouped by age category (U14, U16, U18), and the distribution of birth quartiles was analyzed. Maturity timing was estimated using age at peak height velocity (APHV), and lower-body explosive strength was evaluated through jumping performance. Comparisons across age groups showed progressive increases in body size and jumping performance with advancing age, consistent with pubertal changes in fat-free mass and neuromuscular function. The birthdate distribution indicated an overrepresentation of relatively older athletes (U16 and U18), suggesting that selection bias may intensify with age around the pubertal window. Regression analyses showed that earlier APHV was significantly associated with greater body size after controlling for chronological age (CA) (p ≤ 0.01), although CA remained the strongest predictor. In contrast, APHV did not significantly explain additional variance in jumping performance, suggesting that anthropometrics, training exposure, and movement technique likely contributed. The current findings underscore the role of biological maturation in body size and the need for youth sport systems to include structured strength and conditioning programs that optimize lower-body muscle power. Background: Anthropometric body-composition assessment in youth soccer commonly relies on equations developed in different source populations and based on distinct body-composition models, potentially altering nutritional and sport-related interpretation. This study compared body-fat estimates from equations intended to report the same outcome, body fat percentage, but based on different operational models, and quantified muscle-mass outputs from anthropometric approaches targeting total-body skeletal, whole-body, and tissue-level muscle compartments in a cohort of Chilean male U-15 and U-16 players. Methods: This secondary cross-sectional method-comparison study analyzed anonymized anthropometric records collected in 2018 from 50 male players. Slaughter, Faulkner, Carter, Deurenberg, and Sloan–Siri estimates of body fat were compared, together with Poortmans, Lee, Doupe, and Kerr muscle-mass approaches. Absolute agreement among adiposity equations was evaluated using a two-way random-effects, absolute-agreement, single-measure ICC [ICC(A,1)] and Bland–Altman analyses. Muscle-mass approaches were compared with repeated-measures analysis; pairwise difference-versus-mean summaries across different muscle constructs were interpreted descriptively rather than as formal agreement tests. Sensitivity analyses excluded Deurenberg and examined a maturation-related Slaughter scenario. Results: Deurenberg yielded the highest body-fat estimate (18.97 ± 3.07%), followed by Slaughter (13.32 ± 3.35%), Faulkner (10.84 ± 1.40%), Sloan-Siri (8.01 ± 2.80%), and Carter (7.91 ± 1.49%). Global differences were large (χ2(4) = 182.96; p < 0.001; Kendall’s W = 0.915), and individual absolute agreement was low [ICC(A,1) = 0.157; bootstrap 95% CI 0.102–0.212]. Excluding Deurenberg did not remove the between-method differences (χ2(3) = 124.44; p < 0.001; W = 0.830). For muscle mass, mean estimates ranged from 25.11 ± 3.07 kg with Poortmans to 31.26 ± 4.94 kg with Doupe, with a significant method effect after Greenhouse–Geisser correction (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The adiposity equations yielded substantially different numerical estimates of the same reported outcome, body fat percentage, and showed low individual-level absolute agreement. Muscle-mass approaches also produced large numerical differences, partly expected because they target different compartments. Outputs from different equations or constructs should not be treated as numerically interchangeable. Because no criterion reference method was included, this study quantifies method dependence rather than validity and cannot identify the most accurate equation. Full article

Background: Primitive reflex (PR) assessments based on the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology (INPP) framework are increasingly used in developmental and athletic populations. However, the reproducibility of these observer-based assessments remains insufficiently documented. This study investigated the intra- and inter-rater reliability of subjective PR assessments and examined the potential influence of evaluator expertise in elite youth football athletes. Methods: Sixty-nine male youth football players from an elite academy (age: 18 ± 2 years) participated in this study. PR assessments included the Moro reflex, asymmetrical tonic neck reflex, symmetrical tonic neck reflex, and tonic labyrinthine reflex, evaluated using standardized INPP procedures (0–4 ordinal scoring scale). Intra-rater reliability was assessed by an experienced examiner across three testing sessions performed over six months. Inter-rater reliability was evaluated using standardized video recordings independently scored by two novice raters. Relative reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs), while absolute reliability was quantified using the standard error of measurement (SEM) and the minimal detectable change at the 95% confidence level (MDC95). ResultsGood to excellent intra-rater relative reliability (ICC = 0.86–0.98; 95% CI = [0.81–0.99]) was observed, with SEM values of 0.1–0.6 and MDC95 values of 0.3–1.7 points. Moderate to excellent video-based inter-rater reliability was found (ICC = 0.69–0.99; 95% CI [0.56–0.99]), with SEM values of 0.1–0.7 and MDC95 values of 0.3–2.0 points. Pairwise comparisons among raters showed moderate to excellent relative reliability (ICC = 0.57–0.99; 95% CI [0.35–0.99]), with SEM values of 0.1–0.5 and MDC95 values of 0.2–1.3 points. Conclusions: Subjective PR assessments performed using the INPP framework demonstrated good to excellent intra-rater relative reliability and moderate to excellent video-based inter-rater relative reliability, together with generally low absolute measurement error in elite youth football athletes. These findings provide preliminary psychometric support for the use of standardized PR assessments in research and applied sport settings. Full article

Background: Patellar tendon complaints and other tendon-related disorders are common in jumping sports; however, the relationship between recorded tendon problems, anthropometric characteristics, and neuromuscular performance in youth athletes remains poorly understood. This study explored the association between height, body mass, competitive age category, a retrospectively recorded history of tendon-related disorders, and jumping performance in youth volleyball players. Methods: Thirty-three male youth volleyball players competing in the Under-15, Under-17, and Under-19 categories participated in this cross-sectional study. For each athlete, Reach (maximum standing reach height), Vertec (maximum height attained during a maximal vertical jump), and vertical jump height, calculated as the difference between Vertec and Reach, were recorded. The presence or absence of tendon-related disorders was determined retrospectively from medical history information and club documentation. Data were analyzed using a multivariate general linear model, followed by univariate analyses and Bonferroni-adjusted post hoc comparisons. Results: Height showed a highly significant effect on the set of performance variables (Wilks’ λ = 0.066; p < 0.001), and competitive age category was also significantly associated with performance (Wilks’ λ = 0.655; p = 0.049). In contrast, neither body mass (p = 0.854) nor the tendon-related disorder variable (p = 0.293) demonstrated significant associations. Univariate analyses revealed significant effects of competitive age category on Vertec performance (p = 0.018) and vertical jump height (p = 0.008), but not on Reach (p = 0.542). Bonferroni-adjusted post hoc comparisons showed significant differences between the Under-19 and Under-15 categories for Vertec performance (p = 0.017), and between Under-19 and Under-15 (p = 0.007) as well as Under-17 and Under-15 (p = 0.034) for vertical jump height. Conclusions: Jumping performance in youth volleyball appears to be primarily influenced by anthropometric characteristics and developmental factors associated with competitive age category, whereas the dichotomous retrospective classification of tendon-related disorders adopted in the present study did not discriminate performance level. These findings highlight the importance of integrating functional, clinical, and training-load monitoring to better understand athletic development and tendon vulnerability. Full article

The Cambodian Ministry of Education Youth, and Sport (MoEYS) has, over time, made noticeable progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG-4) to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. However, the pace and extent of that progress remain uneven, particularly in the area of teacher training, which is central to achieving inclusive and quality education. Utilising a document analysis framework, this study draws upon national policy reform documents including the Teacher Policy Action Plan to examine the extent to which the MoEYS’s policy commitments to professionalise the teaching workforce are meeting SDG-4.c goals. Changes to pre-service programmes including the 12 + 4 programme, investments in teacher training centres, and continuous professional development (CPD) frameworks have strengthened the system. Yet, significant challenges persist. Limited access to effective CPD, high student/teacher ratios, teacher shortages, especially in rural locations, and resource constraints continue to undermine the consistency and quality of instructional practice. A contention of this paper is that for Cambodia to fulfil its SDG-4.c target relating to teacher preparedness, progress is contingent upon sustained investment, targeted support for rural and remote regions, and stronger implementation capacity to ensure all learners benefit from well-trained and effectively supported educators. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the impact of menstrual symptoms on sport participation and management strategies among adolescent girls playing floorball in Sweden. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among floorball players aged 12–18 years (n = 545). Logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with menstrual-related symptoms and their impact on participation and absence from training sessions or matches. Results: Menstrual pain (89.6%) and mood swings (81.9%) were the most commonly reported symptoms. Symptoms such as menstrual pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, headache, fatigue, dizziness, and concentration difficulties were more prevalent among participants with early menarche (≤11 years) than those with later menarche. Overall, about 62.2% perceived that their menstrual symptoms affected their training and matches. Early menarche (≤11 years) was associated with nearly three times higher odds of refraining from training sessions or matches. Despite substantial impact, healthcare-seeking and communication with coaches were limited. Conclusions: Given the high prevalence of menstrual symptoms and their impact on sport participation and experiences, menstrual health should be recognised as a core component of athlete well-being in youth sport. Efforts are needed to improve menstrual health awareness, early identification of girls with high symptom burden, and supportive sport environments to promote gender equality in youth sport. Background: Anthropometric analysis has become a key tool for analyzing body composition to assess, monitor, and track structural changes in soccer players. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the scientific literature on body composition and anthropometry in soccer using a bibliometric analysis. Material and Methods: The following databases were consulted: Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), PubMed (Medline), SportDiscus, and the ScienceDirect publishing platform. The study included documents published between 1990 and 2025. Data was selected following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines statement flowchart and subsequently analyzed using Bibliometrix and R software to identify keywords, frequency of occurrence, journal analysis, countries, and other bibliometric indicators. Results: A total of 384 documents met the inclusion criteria. Spain, Italy, Brazil and Portugal stand out as the countries with the highest output. These countries are associated with the most representative authors, led by Suarez-Arrones, L; Nikolaidis, PT; and Campa, F., who are in turn associated with the most representative concepts: “Male”, “Adolescent” and “Athletic performance”. The most prevalent concepts are population-based: “Adolescent” and “Young adult”. The top three organizations in terms of contributing to the scientific study of body composition and anthropometry were the University of the Basque Country, Pablo de Olavide University, and the University of Coimbra. It can be observed that most of the literature has focused on youth (29.16% of the total documents), followed by elite players (22.91%) and professionals (14.84%), where the focus is on those aged 14 to 19 years and playing at highly competitive levels, seeking peak performance. Conclusions: Methodological heterogeneity in evaluation protocols constitutes the main structural shortcoming in this field: 32.29% of studies do not specify their protocols, which compromises the comparability of the results. The widespread adoption of international standards, such as the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) methodology, along with a requirement to indicate the instrument used and the evaluator’s certification level, is a priority for improving the quality of scientific communication in future research. This study investigates how athletes describe relational experiences at and beyond the Arctic Winter Games (AWG). Utilizing a qualitative approach, we analyzed interviews and open-ended survey responses from young athletes at the 2023 AWG, as well as interviews with former athletes returning to the 2023 Games in a supportive or leadership role. Our analysis shows that the AWG offers a range of social and cultural opportunities that make the event especially conducive to cultivating relational experiences. We highlight athletes’ accounts of friendship and network formation, feelings of enchantment, and resonance encounters, alongside collective encounters characterized by a sense of communitas. We also highlight post-liminoid legacies in former athletes’ accounts, including enduring memories, sustained social ties, and an ongoing sense of belonging and community. Taken together, the findings suggest that the AWG’s liminoid, festive, and community-oriented character helps suspend ordinary routines and soften everyday distinctions in ways that make meaningful relational encounters more likely. Background/Objectives: School-age athletes occupy a paradoxical position in the adolescent opioid crisis, combining health-oriented activity with elevated risk of sports-related injury and prescription opioid exposure. In response to the opioid epidemic, states enacted opioid prescribing limit laws (OPLLs) beginning in 2016–2017, yet whether these supply-side policies reached high-risk youth subgroups remains unclear. This study evaluated national temporal trends in prescription opioid misuse among U.S. high school students during the period of OPLL implementation and examined differences across athletic participation, concussion history, sex, grade, race/ethnicity, and substance-use profiles. Methods: Using four biennial waves of the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System with a consistent prescription pain-medicine measure (2017, 2019, 2021, and 2023; total N = 44,501), we conducted survey-weighted multivariable logistic regression models producing adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for lifetime prescription opioid misuse, controlling for survey year, sports participation, sex, grade, race/ethnicity, alcohol use, and other illicit drug use. Interaction and stratified models examined differences associated with sports participation, concussion history, demographic characteristics, and substance use. Results: Weighted prescription opioid misuse declined from 13.9% in 2017 to 12.0% in 2023, with a significant unadjusted linear decline per two-year survey wave (OR = 0.936; 95% CI: 0.879–0.997; p = 0.040). This overall trend was attenuated after adjustment (aOR = 0.967; 95% CI: 0.914–1.024; p = 0.248). Temporal patterns differed significantly across race/ethnicity, sex, grade, and selected substance-use groups. White and male students demonstrated significant adjusted linear declines, whereas Hispanic/Latino and female students remained flat. Black/African American students showed significant year-to-year variation, with elevated adjusted odds in 2019 and 2021 relative to 2017. Concussion history was independently associated with misuse among athletes (aOR = 1.645; 95% CI: 1.417–1.909; p < 0.001), with significant associations observed among White, Asian, Black/African American, and Hispanic/Latino athletes. The pooled concussion-by-race/ethnicity interaction, however, was not significant (p = 0.295). Conclusions: Although prescription opioid misuse declined descriptively between 2017 and 2023, adjusted analyses did not identify a significant overall national temporal change. Since subgroup patterns diverged, prevention planning and surveillance should be disaggregated by race/ethnicity and sex rather than guided by national totals, and groups whose misuse did not decline may require strategies extending beyond clinical prescribing controls. Background and Objectives: Evidence on the acute ergogenic effects of caffeine in adolescent athletes remains limited. This systematic review quantified acute performance-related effects and summarised adverse-event reporting in this population. Methods: PubMed and Web of Science were searched from inception to 13 May 2026 and SPORTDiscus was additionally searched from inception to 15 July 2026 for placebo-controlled studies of acute, dose-defined caffeine ingestion in adolescent athletes aged 10–19 years. Paired Hedges’ g values were synthesised separately across six outcome domains using three-level random-effects models with CR2 cluster-robust inference. Risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using RoB 2 and GRADE. Safety findings were summarised narratively. Results: Thirty-five studies were included, of which 32, representing a total of 726 participants, contributed 363 effect sizes. In the primary analysis, which excluded a priori a small number of extreme combat-sport count-test effects arising from implausibly small reported standard deviations (Hedges’ g > 3.0), caffeine produced a small favourable average effect on physical performance (g = 0.33, 95% CI 0.17 to 0.49). When all effect sizes were included in a sensitivity analysis, the estimate was larger but inflated by these extreme values (g = 0.43, 95% CI 0.20 to 0.67) and was accompanied by substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 84%), a prediction interval crossing the null (−0.71 to 1.58), and significant small-study asymmetry. Pooled effects were not statistically significant for sport-specific performance, perceptual response, or physiology. Cognitive findings were based on only two study clusters and were highly uncertain, while psychological outcomes were summarised narratively because the evidence was too sparse and heterogeneous for a meaningful pooled estimate. Exploratory moderator analyses did not provide reliable evidence that effects differed by caffeine dose or ingestion timing. No serious adverse events were reported, but adverse-event assessment was inconsistent. Conclusions: Acute caffeine ingestion may produce a small and uncertain benefit for selected physical-performance tasks in adolescent athletes. Adverse-event reporting was inconsistent, and current evidence is insufficient to support routine caffeine use in youth sport. These findings are specific to acute caffeine exposure under controlled experimental conditions in adolescent athletes and should not be extrapolated to children, non-athlete adolescents, repeated or chronic caffeine use, or energy-drink consumption. Sprint mechanical profiling is widely used in team sports, yet the agreement between field-based measurement systems in indoor environments remains unclear. This study compared sprint mechanical outputs derived from a Kinexon local positioning system (LPS), radar, and laser during maximal indoor basketball sprints and examined their inter-system agreement and inter-trial reliability. Twenty-two elite youth basketball players performed maximal 28 m linear sprints recorded simultaneously using the three technologies. Sprint kinematics were modeled using a mono-exponential approach applied to the native signals provided by each system to derive theoretical maximal velocity (S0), theoretical maximal acceleration (A0), and acceleration time constant (Tau). Inter-system agreement was assessed using mean bias and 95% limits of agreement, while inter-trial reliability was evaluated using coefficients of variation (CV), change in the mean, and standard error of measurement. Radar and laser showed close agreement for S0 (bias = −0.07 ± 0.17 m·s−1; relative error = 0.89%), whereas LPS systematically overestimated S0, with relative systematic errors of 5.26–6.49%. Acceleration-related parameters exhibited larger inter-system discrepancies, with relative errors up to 3.92% for A0 and 10.55% for Tau. Inter-trial reliability was high across all systems (CV < 1.5% for S0 and 3.7–4.7% for A0 and Tau). These findings indicate that sprint mechanical outputs should not be used interchangeably across technologies, particularly for acceleration-related variables, although all systems remain suitable for within-system longitudinal monitoring in applied basketball settings. Background: Sports training induces functional and structural adaptations that may influence body composition, particularly during adolescence when growth and maturation are still occurring. Although anthropometric characteristics have been extensively studied within individual sports, comparative analyses among different sport categories remain limited. The aim of this study was to compare body composition characteristics among athletes participating in individual, team, and combat sports within a Spanish Sports Technification Program. Methods: A total of 118 young athletes (62 males and 56 females) from the Valencian Sports Technification Centre participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants were classified into three sport categories: individual sports (athletics, swimming, and triathlon), team sports (handball and volleyball), and combat sports (karate and taekwondo). Anthropometric assessment was performed according to the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) protocol. Body composition variables, including fat mass, muscle mass, and bone mass, were estimated using established anthropometric equations. Statistical analyses were performed using non-parametric tests, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: After adjustment for multiple comparisons, significant differences remained between sport categories for several body composition indicators. Athletes from the individual sport group showed a higher muscle mass percentage and lower body fat percentages estimated using the Withers, Faulkner, and Carter equations than those from the team sport group. Similarly, estimated body fat percentages were lower in the individual sport group than in the combat sport group across all three equations. Team sport athletes presented higher absolute fat and muscle mass than combat sport athletes. However, some differences identified in the initial analyses, including fat mass and bone mass percentage between the individual and team sport groups and muscle mass percentage between the team and combat sport groups, did not remain statistically significant after adjustment for multiple comparisons. Conclusions: Body composition characteristics differed among the groups of young athletes participating in the specific individual, team, and combat sports included in this study. Within this cohort, athletes from the individual sport group generally exhibited lower body fat levels than those from the team and combat sport groups, whereas differences were also observed in other anthropometric characteristics. These findings should be interpreted within the context of the specific sports included and should not be generalized to individual, team, or combat sports as a whole. The findings may assist coaches, sports scientists, and health professionals in the monitoring and development of young athletes participating in similar sports and development programs. Full article

Background: Match-related performance indicators have been widely studied in senior water polo, but evidence from Asian youth competitions remains limited. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the key performance indicators (KPIs) associated with winning and losing outcomes in the 2026 Asian U18 Men’s Water Polo Championship. Methods: This retrospective observational study analysed official technical statistics from all 21 decisive matches of the tournament held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 7 to 16 March 2026, yielding 42 team-match observations (21 winners and 21 losers). The dataset comprised seven national teams and 101 registered athletes; however, individual athlete anthropometric and sociodemographic data were unavailable because of data privacy restrictions imposed by the tournament organising committee and participating teams. Seven match-level performance variables were extracted from official records. Group differences were examined using independent-sample t-tests or Mann–Whitney U tests, with effect sizes quantified using Cohen’s d and bootstrapped 95% confidence intervals. Significant non-circular variables were entered into an exploratory binary logistic regression model. Results: Three variables significantly discriminated winners from losers: goals scored (p<0.001; d=2.036), won offensive plays (WOPs; centre-forward offensive confrontations resulting in maintained advantageous possession, an exclusion, or an immediate scoring opportunity; p=0.004; d=1.026), and power-play goals (PPGs; p=0.022; d=0.816). In the binary logistic regression model, WOPs remained the only significant independent correlate of match victory (OR = 2.734, 95% CI [1.156, 6.465], p=0.022), whereas PPGs were not independently significant after adjustment (p=0.083). Conclusions: Won offensive plays emerged as the most robust non-circular performance indicator associated with winning in this Asian U18 tournament sample. These findings offer tournament-specific evidence that centre-forward offensive-play effectiveness may inform competition analysis and coaching strategies in youth water polo. However, the results should be interpreted cautiously and replicated in future studies using standardised coding protocols and larger multi-tournament datasets. Full article

Women’s football represents the convergence of the history of sport, the history of women, and the history of women’s participation in ball games. From Classical antiquity, literary and archeological evidence highlights a long-standing association between spherical objects and the female sphere. While ancient physical cultures primarily celebrated male athleticism, records from various Classical civilizations indicate that women occasionally engaged in ball games and recreational exercises. In ancient Greece and Rome, these activities were often socially framed around themes of youth, grace, and courtship rituals, rather than structured competitive sport. Over the centuries, women continuously negotiated their access to physical play, transitioning from these early symbolic associations to more organized activities by the late Middle Ages. It was only at the end of the nineteenth century, alongside broader movements for female emancipation, that women’s football began to emerge in Great Britain, marking the entry of women into an exclusively male sporting domain. In recent decades, women’s football has undergone substantial professionalization and global expansion, accompanied by growing scientific interest in understanding the determinants of performance. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the multidimensional factors influencing performance in women’s football, integrating physical and match demands, physiological and anthropometric characteristics, psychological and emotional components, menstrual cycle-related influences, and contextual variables. The literature published between 2008 and 2024 was examined across major scientific databases. Findings indicate that while total match distance has remained relatively stable (averaging 9500–10,500 m), high-speed running distances, sprint frequencies, and peak intensity demands have escalated by 15–30% over the tracked decade. Psychological resilience and team dynamics contribute meaningfully to performance outcomes, whereas menstrual cycle phases appear to exert limited and inconsistent effects on objective physical performance. Overall, performance in women’s football emerges from the dynamic interaction of multiple domains, underscoring the need for integrated and individualized performance management strategies.
