Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted significant attention due to their widespread applications in various fields such as environmental monitoring, agriculture, intelligent transportation, and healthcare. In these networks, the power cost of a sensor node is closely related to the radius of its coverage area, following a nonlinear relationship where power increases as the coverage radius grows according to an attenuation factor. This means that increasing the coverage radius of a sensor leads to a corresponding increase in its power cost. Consequently, minimizing the total power cost of the network while all clients are served has become a crucial research topic. The power cover problem focuses on adjusting the power levels of sensors to serve all clients while minimizing the total power cost. This survey focuses on the power cover problem and its related variants in WSNs. Specifically, it introduces nonlinear integer programming formulations for the power cover problem and its related variants, all within the specified sensor setting. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the power cover problem and its variants under both specified and unspecified sensor settings, summarizes existing results and approximation algorithms, and outlines potential directions for future research. In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has experienced considerable developments and has played an important role in various domains such as industry, agriculture, healthcare, transportation, and environment, especially for smart cities. Along with that, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are considered to be important components of the IoT system (WSN-IoT) to create smart applications and automate processes. As the number of connected IoT devices increases, privacy and security issues become more complicated due to their external working environments and limited resources. Hence, solutions need to be updated to ensure that data and user privacy are protected from threats and attacks. To support the safety and reliability of such systems, in this paper, security issues in the WSN-IoT are addressed and classified as identifying security challenges and requirements for different kinds of attacks in either WSNs or IoT systems. In addition, security solutions corresponding to different types of attacks are provided, analyzed, and evaluated. We provide different comparisons and classifications based on specific goals and applications that hopefully can suggest suitable solutions for specific purposes in practical. We also suggest some research directions to support new security mechanisms. Full article

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an essential technique for continuously assessing structural conditions using integrated sensor systems during operation. SHM technologies have evolved to address the increasing demand for efficient maintenance strategies in advanced engineering fields, such as civil infrastructure, aerospace, and transportation. However, developing a miniaturized, cost-effective, and multi-sensor solution based on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) remains a significant challenge, particularly for SHM applications in weight-sensitive aerospace structures. To address this, the present study introduces a novel WSN-based Multi-Sensor System (MSS) that integrates multiple sensing capabilities onto a 3 × 3 cm flexible Printed Circuit Board (PCB). The proposed system combines a Piezoelectric Transducer (PZT) for impact detection; a strain gauge for mechanical deformation monitoring; an accelerometer for capturing dynamic responses; and an environmental sensor measuring temperature, pressure, and humidity. This high level of functional integration, combined with real-time Data Acquisition (DAQ) and precise time synchronization via Bluetooth Low Energy (LE), distinguishes the proposed MSS from conventional SHM systems, which are typically constrained by bulky hardware, single sensing modalities, or dependence on wired communication. Experimental evaluations on composite panels and aluminum specimens demonstrate reliable high-fidelity recording of PZT signals, strain variations, and acceleration responses, matching the performance of commercial instruments. The proposed system offers a low-power, lightweight, and scalable platform, demonstrating strong potential for on-board SHM in aircraft applications. Full article

The growing demand for reliable and secure vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication in next-generation intelligent transportation systems has accelerated the adoption of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) as a means of enhancing link quality, spectral efficiency, and physical layer security. In this paper, we investigate the problem of secrecy rate maximization in a cooperative dual-RIS-aided V2V communication network, where two cascaded RISs are deployed to collaboratively assist with secure data transmission between mobile vehicular nodes in the presence of eavesdroppers. To address the inherent complexity of time-varying wireless channels, we propose a novel evolutionary transformer-gated recurrent unit (Evo-Transformer-GRU) framework that jointly learns temporal channel patterns and optimizes the RIS reflection coefficients, beam-forming vectors, and cooperative communication strategies. Our model integrates the sequence modeling strength of GRUs with the global attention mechanism of transformer encoders, enabling the efficient representation of time-series channel behavior and long-range dependencies. To further enhance convergence and secrecy performance, we incorporate an improved gray wolf optimizer (IGWO) to adaptively regulate the model’s hyper-parameters and fine-tune the RIS phase shifts, resulting in a more stable and optimized learning process. Extensive simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework compared to existing baselines, such as transformer, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT), deep reinforcement learning (DRL), long short-term memory (LSTM), and GRU models. Specifically, our method achieves an up to 32.6% improvement in average secrecy rate and a 28.4% lower convergence time under varying channel conditions and eavesdropper locations. In addition to secrecy rate improvements, the proposed model achieved a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.05, coefficient of determination (R2) score of 0.96, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of just 0.73%, outperforming all baseline methods in prediction accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, Evo-Transformer-GRU demonstrated rapid convergence within 100 epochs, the lowest variance across multiple runs. Full article

The accelerated growth of the transport sector has increased oil consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, intensifying global environmental challenges. The electrification of transportation has emerged as a key strategy to achieve sustainability targets, with electric vehicles (EVs) expected to account for 50% of global car sales by 2035. However, widespread adoption requires smart infrastructure capable of enabling dynamic in-motion charging. In this context, Electric Road Systems (ERSs), particularly those based on Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technologies, offer a promising solution by transferring energy between road-embedded transmitters and vehicle-mounted receivers. This study assesses the structural response and service life of conventional and electrified asphalt pavement sections representative of the Spanish road network. Several standard pavement configurations were analyzed under heavy traffic (dual axles, 13 tons) using a hybrid approach combining mechanistic–empirical multilayer modeling and three-dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. The electrified designs integrate prefabricated charging units (CUs) placed at a 9 cm depth, disrupting the structural continuity of the pavement. The results reveal stress concentrations at the CU–asphalt interface and service life reductions of up to 50% in semiflexible pavements. Semirigid sections performed better, with average reductions close to 40%. These findings are based on numerical simulations of standard Spanish sections and do not include experimental validation. Ensuring the safety and quality of perishable agrifood products throughout the supply chain is essential. Key parameters, such as temperature and humidity, must be consistently monitored to prevent spoilage, maintain nutritional value, and minimise health risks. Fluctuations in transportation conditions can compromise product integrity, leading to deterioration and an increased risk of foodborne illness. Monitoring agrifood supply chains is essential, from packaging to last-mile delivery. Distribution methods that rely on non-automated monitoring systems, such as manual temperature measurements, are error-prone due to the failure of manual treatments and increase the likelihood of product deterioration. Emerging sensor technologies and the rapid development of Information and Communication Technologies offer new possibilities for real-time tracking, enabling stakeholders to maintain optimal conditions and monitor aesthetic, physicochemical, and nutritional quality. This paper proposes a cost-effective temperature and humidity traceability system that utilises wireless sensor networks (WSN) and Internet of Things (IoΤ) services to monitor perishable products within the agrifood supply chain ecosystem. It also provides an overview of recent innovations in sensor technologies, along with food quality indicators relevant to real-time monitoring of food quality. The proposed research examines the available sensor technologies and methodologies that enable continuous monitoring of agrifood supply chains. Moreover, the paper presents a pilot full-scale project from both functional and technological perspectives. Full article

This paper presents a hybrid fast charging strategy for static wireless power transfer (WPT) systems that synergistically combines pulsed current and multi-stage current (MCM) modes to enable rapid yet battery-health-conscious electric vehicle (EV) charging, thereby promoting sustainable transportation. The proposed approach employs a memetic algorithm (MA) to dynamically optimize the charging parameters, achieving an optimal balance between speed and battery longevity while maintaining 90.78% system efficiency at the SAE J2954-standard 85 kHz operating frequency. A neural-network-based state of charge (SOC) estimator provides accurate real-time monitoring, complemented by MA-tuned PI control for enhanced resonance stability and adaptive pulsed current–MCM profiles for the optimal energy transfer. Simulations and experimental validation demonstrate faster charging compared to that using the conventional constant current–constant voltage (CC-CV) methods while effectively preserving the battery’s state of health (SOH)—a critical advantage that reduces the environmental impact of frequent battery replacements and minimizes the carbon footprint associated with raw material extraction and battery manufacturing. By addressing both the technical challenges of high-power WPT systems and the ecological imperative of battery preservation, this research bridges the gap between fast charging requirements and sustainable EV adoption, offering a practical solution that aligns with global decarbonization goals through optimized resource utilization and an extended battery service life. Reliable wireless communication is essential for mobile robotic systems operating in dynamic environments, particularly in the context of smart mobility and cloud-integrated urban infrastructures. This article presents an experimental study analyzing the impact of robot motion dynamics on wireless network performance, contributing to the broader discussion on data reliability and communication efficiency in intelligent transportation systems. Measurements were conducted using a quadruped robot equipped with an onboard edge computing device, navigating predefined trajectories in a laboratory setting designed to emulate real-world variability. Key wireless parameters, including signal strength (RSSI), latency, and packet loss, were continuously monitored alongside robot kinematic data such as speed, orientation (roll, pitch, yaw), and movement patterns. The results show a significant correlation between dynamic motion—especially high forward velocities and rotational maneuvers—and degradations in network performance. Increased robot speeds and frequent orientation changes were associated with elevated latency and greater packet loss, while static or low-motion periods exhibited more stable communication. These findings highlight critical challenges for real-time data transmission in mobile IoRT (Internet of Robotic Things) systems, and emphasize the role of network-aware robotic behavior, interoperable communication protocols, and edge-to-cloud data integration in ensuring robust wireless performance within smart city environments. Hybrid beamforming plays a critical role in evaluating wireless communication technology, particularly for millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) communication. Several hybrid beamforming systems are investigated for millimeter-wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication. The deployment of huge grant-free transmission in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band is required due to the growing demands for spectrum resources in upcoming enormous machine-type communication applications. Ultra-high data speed, reduced latency, and improved connection are all promised by the development of 5G mmWave networks. Yet, due to severe route loss and directional communication requirements, there are substantial obstacles to transmission reliability and energy efficiency. To address this limitation in this research we present an intelligent transmission control scheme tailored to 5G mmWave networks. Transport control protocol (TCP) performance over mmWave links can be enhanced for network protocols by utilizing the mmWave scalable (mmS)-TCP. To ensure that users have the stronger average power, we suggest a novel method called row compression two-stage learning-based accurate multi-path processing network with received signal strength indicator-based association strategy (RCTS-AMP-RSSI-AS) for an estimate of both the direct and indirect channels. To change user scenarios and maintain effective communication constantly, we utilize the innovative method known as multi-user scenario-based MATD3 (Mu-MATD3). To improve performance, we introduce the novel method of “digital and analog beam training with long-short term memory (DAH-BT-LSTM)”. Finally, as optimizing network performance requires bottleneck-aware congestion reduction, the low-latency congestion control schemes (LLCCS) are proposed. The overall proposed method improves the performance of 5G mmWave networks. Full article

As an important part of national transportation infrastructure, the operation status of bridges is directly related to transportation safety and social stability. Structural deflection, which reflects the deformation behavior of bridge systems, serves as a key indicator for identifying stiffness degradation and the progression of localized damage. The accurate modeling and forecasting of deflection are thus essential for effective bridge health monitoring and intelligent maintenance. To address the limitations of traditional methods in handling multi-source data fusion and nonlinear temporal dependencies, this study proposes an enhanced iTransformer-based prediction model, termed LDAiT (LSTM Differential Attention iTransformer), which integrates Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and a differential attention mechanism for high-fidelity deflection prediction under complex working conditions. Firstly, a multi-source heterogeneous time series dataset is constructed based on wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, enabling the real-time acquisition and fusion of key structural response parameters such as deflection, strain, and temperature across critical bridge sections. Secondly, LDAiT enhances the modeling capability of long-term dependence through the introduction of LSTM and combines with the differential attention mechanism to improve the precision of response to the local dynamic changes in disturbance. Finally, experimental validation is carried out based on the measured data of Xintian Yellow River Bridge, and the results show that LDAiT outperforms the existing mainstream models in the indexes of R2, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE and has good accuracy, stability and generalization ability. The proposed approach offers a novel and effective framework for deflection forecasting in complex bridge systems and holds significant potential for practical deployment in structural health monitoring and intelligent decision-making applications. Time-sensitive applications require the End-to-End (E2E) delay of wireless networks to be deterministic. For example, control signals in industrial automation, intelligent transportation, and telemedicine must be transmitted to their destinations within the millisecond range, with delay jitter controlled within the microsecond range. To formulate effective policies for maintaining E2E delay within a small deterministic range, it is essential to estimate the probability density function (PDF) of E2E delay. Data-driven methods based on mixture density networks have been employed to estimate the PDF of E2E delay in wireless networks. However, in WiFi networks, the estimation results produced by existing methods exhibit significant discrepancies and fluctuations when compared to actual measurements. Motivated by this, an improved estimation method is proposed, where the delay PDF is divided into three segments with different functional expressions that are coupled together. Moreover, the parameter estimation process is implemented in two stages. First, the two division thresholds for the three segments of the PDF are calculated based on the variation trend of E2E delay measurements. Second, the remaining parameters are obtained through training using an improved mixture density network. Experimental results indicate that the E2E delay PDF obtained by the proposed method exhibits a smaller gap compared to actual measurements than existing methods. Specifically, the mean absolute errors and average fluctuation amplitudes of tail probabilities at certain delay values decrease by at least one order of magnitude. Moreover, the multiple-segmentation feature of the proposed method enhances its robustness in situations where measurement data are affected by low levels of Gaussian noise. Full article

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have emerged to address unique challenges in urban environments. This survey dives into the challenges faced in urban areas and explores how WSN applications can help overcome these obstacles. The diverse applications of WSNs in urban settings discussed in this paper include gas monitoring, traffic optimization, healthcare, disaster response, and security surveillance. The innovative research is considered in an urban environment, where WSNs such as energy efficiency, throughput, and scalability are deployed. Every application scenario is distinct and examined in details within this paper. In particular, smart cities represent a major domain where WSNs are increasingly integrated to enhance urban living through intelligent infrastructure. This paper emphasizes how WSNs are pivotal in realizing smart cities by enabling real-time data collection, analysis, and communication among interconnected systems. Applications such as smart transportation systems, automated waste management, smart grids, and environmental monitoring are discussed as key components of smart city ecosystems. The synergy between WSNs and smart city technologies highlights the potential to significantly improve the quality of life, resource management, and operational efficiency in modern cities. This survey specifies existing work objectives with results and limitations. The aim is to develop a methodology for evaluating the quality of performance analysis. Various performance metrics are discussed in existing research to determine the influence of real-time applications on energy consumption, network lifetime, end-to-end delay, efficiency, routing overhead, throughput, computation cost, computational overhead, reliability, loss rate, and execution time. The observed outcomes are that the proposed method achieves a higher 16% accuracy, 36% network lifetime, 20% efficiency, and 42% throughput. Additionally, the proposed method obtains 36%, 30%, 46%, 35%, and 32% reduction in energy consumption, computation cost, execution time, error rate, and computational overhead, respectively, compared to conventional methods. Traffic congestions due to construction and maintenance works of road infrastructure cause travel delays, unpredictability and less tolerant road users. Bicyclists are more flexible with road closures, shifting to alternative routes, public transport and other active transport depending on the infrastructure, quality and transport services. However, the mixed traffic environment near road closures increases the safety risks for bicyclists. Traditional traffic monitoring systems rely on costly and demanding intrusive sensors. The application of wireless sensors and machine learning algorithms can enhance the analysis and prediction ability of traffic distribution and characteristics in the proximity of road closures. This paper applies artificial neural networks (ANNs) coupled with a Generalised Delta Rule (GDR) algorithm to analyse the sensor traffic data before, during and after the closure of the Mill Road Bridge in Cambridge City in the United Kingdom. The ANN models show that the traffic volume of motorbikes (44%) and buses (34%) and the proximity of Mill Road Bridge (39%) are significant factors affecting bicycle traffic before the closure. During the bridge closure, the proximity of the bridge (99%) and traffic volume of large rigid vehicles (51%) are the most important factors of bicycle distribution in nearby streets leading cyclists to unsafe detours. After the reopening of the Mill Road Bridge, unclear signage caused continued traffic impact, with motorbikes (17%) and large vehicles (24%) playing the most significant role in the spatial distribution of bicycle traffic. This paper emphasises safety concerns from mixed traffic and highlights the importance of cost-effective sensor-based traffic monitoring and analysis of the sensor data using neural networks. Understanding the spatiotemporal distribution of air pollution is critical for improving urban air quality. Advances in wireless sensor networks have made it possible to monitor air pollution across cities at higher spatiotemporal resolutions. The new spatial coverage allows the novel implementation of advanced statistical methods to detect spatially important, coherent patterns in environmental flows. In this study, we apply proper orthogonal decomposition to a spatial distribution derived from 34 particulate matter sensors, which collected data over 250 days across the Liverpool City Region in England, to identify a set of spatially orthogonal modes. The dominant mode exhibits a daily periodicity in the increases of particulate matter, with higher increases in residential areas interpreted as changes driven by daily commutes. The second mode highlights seasonal changes, and the third mode alludes to pollution transportation with simultaneous increases and decreases. In contrast with traditional time series and spatial analyses, proper orthogonal decomposition enables the elucidation of patterns that otherwise might remain hidden. Our findings highlight the benefits of urban wireless sensor networks and demonstrate the applicability of proper orthogonal decomposition in studying the movements of polluted areas and their correlations with meteorological variables and anthropogenic factors. Research on the Rapid Testing Method of Influence Lines for Beam Bridges and Its Engineering Applications

Bridges are critical nodes in transportation networks, and the evaluation of their service performance is of vital importance. Rapid assessment techniques based on the theory of influence lines have become a significant research topic. This study proposes a rapid testing method for the influence lines of beam-type bridges, with the synchronous monitoring of dynamic vehicle positions and a wireless network of multiple sensors. Field testing on a 30 m span T-beam bridge revealed that the measured vertical displacement during slow continuous driving corresponded with the static load test data within a deviation of ±6%, with the entire testing process completed in only 5 min, demonstrating efficiency and minimal traffic interference. Based on the measured influence lines, rapid bridge bearing capacity assessments and finite element model updating were researched. A case study of a simply supported T-beam bridge composed of prefabricated prestressed concrete showed that the calculated values using the proposed rapid assessment method deviated from traditional load test values between −5.68% and 4.69%, indicating a small error margin. After applying this method to the model updating of a (25 + 45 + 25) m continuous beam bridge on a highway, the inversion errors of the concrete elastic modulus and prestress were 1.40% and 1.20%, respectively, confirming the reliability of the precision. The rapid testing method for influence lines can be applied to bridge inspection, evaluation, and model updating. Full article
