Real-Time Detection and Response to Wormhole and Sinkhole Attacks in Wireless Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks have become a vital technology that is extensively applied across multiple industries, including agriculture, industrial operations, and smart cities, as well as residential smart homes and environmental monitoring systems. Security threats emerge in these systems through hidden routing-level attacks such as Wormhole and Sinkhole attacks. The aim of this research was to develop a methodology for detecting security incidents in WSNs by conducting real-time analysis of Wormhole and Sinkhole attacks. Furthermore, the paper proposes a novel detection methodology combined with architectural enhancements to improve network robustness, measured by hop counts, delays, false data ratios, and route integrity. A real-time WSN infrastructure was developed using ZigBee and Global System for Mobile Communications/General Packet Radio Service (GSM/GPRS) technologies. To realistically simulate Wormhole and Sinkhole attack scenarios and conduct evaluations, we developed a modular cyber–physical architecture that supports real-time monitoring, repeatability, and integration of ZigBee- and GSM/GPRS-based attacker nodes. During the experimentation, Wormhole attacks caused the hop count to decrease from 4 to 3, while the average delay increased by 40%, and false sensor readings were introduced in over 30% of cases. Additionally, Sinkhole attacks led to a 27% increase in traffic concentration at the malicious node, disrupting load balancing and route integrity. The proposed multi-stage methodology includes data collection, preprocessing, anomaly detection using the 3-sigma rule, and risk-based decision making. Simulation results demonstrated that the methodology successfully detected route shortening, packet loss, and data manipulation in real time. Thus, the integration of anomaly-based detection with ZigBee and GSM/GPRS enables a timely response to security threats in critical WSN deployments. Full article

A Framework to Retrieve Water Quality Parameters in Small, Optically Diverse Freshwater Ecosystems Using Sentinel-2 MSI Imagery

Small lakes (<10 km2) provide a range of ecosystem services but are often overlooked in both monitoring efforts and limnological studies. Remote sensing has been increasingly used to complement in situ monitoring or to provide water colour data for unmonitored inland water bodies. However, due to spatial, radiometric, and spectral constraints, it has been heavily focused on large lakes. Sentinel-2 MSI is the first sensor with the capability to consistently retrieve a wide range of essential water quality variables, such as chlorophyll-a concentration (chl-a) and water transparency, in small water bodies, and to provide long time series. Here, we provide and validate a framework for retrieving two variables, chl-a and turbidity, over lakes with diverse optical characteristics using Sentinel-2 imagery. It is based on GRS for atmospheric and sun glint correction, WaterDetect for water detection, and inversion models that were automatically selected based on two different sets of optical water types (OWTs)—one for each variable; for chl-a, we produced a blended product for improved spatial representation. To validate the approach, we compared the products with more than 600 in situ data from 108 lakes located in the Adour–Garonne river basins, ranging from 3 to ∼5000 ha, as well as remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) data collected during 10 field campaigns during the summer and spring seasons. Rrs retrieval (n = 65) was robust for bands 2 to 5, with MAPE varying from 15 to 32% and achieving correlation from 0.74 up to 0.92. For bands 6 to 8A, the Rrs retrieval was much less accurate, being influenced by adjacency effects. Glint removal significantly enhanced Rrs accuracy, with RMSE improving from 0.0067 to 0.0021 sr−1 for band 4, for example. Water quality retrieval showed consistent results, with an MAPE of 56%, an RMSE of 11.4 mg m−3, and an r of 0.76 for chl-a, and an MAPE of 47%, an RMSE of 9.7 NTU, and an r of 0.87 for turbidity, and no significant effect of lake area or lake depth on retrieval errors. The temporal and spatial representations of the selected parameters were also shown to be consistent, demonstrating that the framework is robust and can be applied over lakes as small as 3 ha. The validated methods can be applied to retrieve time series of chl-a and turbidity starting from 2016 and with a frequency of up to 5 days, largely expanding the database collected by water agencies. This dataset will be extremely useful for studying the dynamics of these small freshwater ecosystems. Full article

Background: Visual impairment (VI) continues to be a significant global public health concern, especially in underserved rural communities. Objectives: This study aims to assess the prevalence of VI and refractive errors, as well as to identify the causes and risk factors associated with VI in Duhknah, a rural area in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in May 2024, included 929 participants aged 6–90 years from Duhknah, a rural area in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Refractive errors (REs) were measured using a non-cycloplegic autorefractometer. Anterior and posterior eye examinations were performed using slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct ophthalmoscopy, and 90 D fundus biomicroscopy. VI was classified based on the International Classification of Diseases 11th revision (ICD-11), 2018. Results: The findings revealed that 671 (72.2%) participants had never undergone an eye examination. The overall prevalence of presenting VI was 370 (39.8%), comprising 21.6% with mild VI, 11.0% moderate, 4.1% severe, and 3.1% classified as blind. The prevalence of hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism was 20.6%, 36.9%, and 13.2%, respectively. Uncorrected REs were the most common cause of VI (81.4%), followed by amblyopia (13.5%) and cataracts (3.2%). Regression analysis showed that women had 1.58 times higher odds of VI (p = 0.001). Participants with eye examinations for one year or more had 3.64 times higher odds (p < 0.001). Additionally, the risk of VI was significantly lower among older participants (ages 18–90) compared to younger ones (ages 6–17), (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study found most participants had never had an eye exam, and VI was highly prevalent in the rural community. These findings underscore the need to strengthen primary eye care in rural Saudi Arabia. Regular vision screening, particularly for children, and better access to refractive services could significantly reduce VI and support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Full article

The integration of AI into online platforms is reshaping consumer experience and behavior. While existing research has largely focused on the role of AI in search services and experience services, few studies have examined the role of AI in the context of credence services. This study fills this gap by investigating an AI-powered preview tool in the context of online medical aesthetic platforms. Specifically, this study investigates how the AI Magic Mirror influences consumer purchase intentions in medical aesthetic services. Using secondary data analysis and two experimental studies, we examine the main effects, as well as mediation and moderation effects. The findings consistently demonstrate that the AI Magic Mirror significantly increases consumer purchase intentions. This relationship is positively mediated by perceived value and negatively mediated by perceived risk. In addition, the main effect is stronger for procedures with higher fit uncertainty and is more pronounced for those with lower popularity. These results provide theoretical insights into AI application in credence service contexts and offer practical implications for the design of AI-enhanced online service platforms. Full article

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are considered a good energy source to maintain supply and demand, mitigate intermittency, and ensure grid stability. The primary contribution of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview of global energy markets and a critical analysis of BESS’ participation in frequency control ancillary service (FCAS) markets. This review synthesises the current state of knowledge on the evolution of the energy market and the role of battery energy storage systems in providing grid stability, particularly frequency control services, with a focus on their integration into evolving high-renewable-energy-source (RES) market structures. Specifically, solar PV and wind energy are emerging as the main drivers of RES expansion, accounting for approximately 61% of the global market share. A BESS offers greater flexibility in storage capacity, scalability and rapid response capabilities, making it an effective solution to address emerging security risks of the system. Moreover, a BESS is able to provide active power support through power smoothing when coupled with solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation. In this paper, we provide an overview of the current status of energy markets, the contribution of battery storage systems to grid stability and flexibility, as well as the challenges that BESS face in evolving electricity markets. Investigating the coevolution between ecosystem services (ES) and human well-being (HWB) holds significant implications for achieving the sustainable operation of human–environment systems. However, limited research has focused on ES-HWB interactions in ecotourism-dominated counties. To address this gap, this study takes Chun’an County in Zhejiang Province, China, as a case study, with the research objective of exploring the processes, patterns, and mechanisms of the coevolution between ecosystem services (ES) and human well-being (HWB) in ecotourism-dominated counties. By integrating multi-source heterogeneous data, including land use data, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and statistical records, and employing methods such as the dynamic equivalent factor method, the PLUS model, the coupling coordination degree model, and comprehensive evaluation, we analyzed the synergistic evolution of ES-HWB in Chun’an County from 2000 to 2020. The results indicate that (1) the ecosystem service value (ESV) fluctuated between 30.15 and 36.85 billion CNY, exhibiting a spatial aggregation pattern centered on the Qiandao Lake waterbody, with distance–decay characteristics. The PLUS model confirms ecological conservation policies optimize ES patterns. (2) The HWB index surged from 0.16 to 0.8, driven by tourism-led economic growth, infrastructure investment, and institutional innovation, facilitating a paradigm shift from low to high well-being at the county level. (3) The ES-HWB interaction evolved through three phases—disordered, antagonism, and coordination—revealing tourism as a key mediator driving coupled human–environment system sustainability via a pressure–adaptation–synergy transmission mechanism. This study not only advances the understanding of ES-HWB coevolution in ecotourism-dominated counties, but also provides a transferable methodological framework for sustainable development in similar regions. In the era of Industry 5.0, future wireless networks are increasingly shifting from traditional symmetric architectures toward heterogeneous and asymmetric paradigms, driven by the demand for diversified and dynamic services. This architectural evolution gives rise to complex and asymmetric flows, such as the coexistence of periodic and burst flows with varying latency, jitter, and deadline constraints, posing new challenges for deterministic transmission. Traditional time-sensitive networking (TSN) is well-suited for periodic flows but lacks the flexibility to effectively handle dynamic, asymmetric traffi. To address this limitation, we propose a two-stage asymmetric flow scheduling framework with dynamic deadline control, termed A-TSN. In the first stage, we design a Deep Q-Network-based Dynamic Injection Time Slot algorithm (DQN-DITS) to optimize slot allocation for periodic flows under varying network loads. In the second stage, we introduce the Dynamic Deadline Online (DDO) scheduling algorithm, which enables real-time scheduling for asymmetric flows while satisfying flow deadlines and capacity constraints. Simulation results demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces end-to-end latency, improves scheduling efficiency, and enhances adaptability to high-volume asymmetric traffic, offering a scalable solution for future deterministic wireless networks. A Swarm-Based Multi-Objective Framework for Lightweight and Real-Time IoT Intrusion Detection

Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services have transformed the way people interact with their environment, enhancing comfort and quality of life. Additionally, Machine Learning (ML) approaches show significant promise for detecting intrusions in IoT environments. However, the high dimensionality, class imbalance, and complexity of network traffic—combined with the dynamic nature of sensor networks—pose substantial challenges to the development of efficient and effective detection algorithms. In this study, a multi-objective metaheuristic optimization approach, referred to as MOOIDS-IoT, is integrated with ML techniques to develop an intelligent cybersecurity system for IoT environments. MOOIDS-IoT combines a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based feature selection technique with a multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. PSO optimizes convergence speed, model complexity, and classification accuracy by dynamically adjusting the weights and thresholds of the deployed classifiers. Furthermore, PSO integrates Pareto-based multi-objective optimization directly into the particle swarm framework, extending conventional swarm intelligence while preserving a diverse set of non-dominated solutions. In addition, the GA reduces training time and eliminates redundancy by identifying the most significant input characteristics. The MOOIDS-IoT framework is evaluated using two lightweight models—MOO-PSO-XGBoost and MOO-PSO-RF—across two benchmark datasets, namely the NSL-KDD and CICIoT2023 datasets. On CICIoT2023, MOO-PSO-RF obtains 91.42% accuracy, whereas MOO-PSO-XGBoost obtains 98.38% accuracy. In addition, both models perform well on NSL-KDD (MOO-PSO-RF: 99.66% accuracy, MOO-PSO-XGBoost: 98.46% accuracy). The proposed approach is particularly appropriate for IoT applications with limited resources, where scalability and model efficiency are crucial considerations. Full article

Colorectal Cancer Risk in Korean Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Nationwide Big Data Study of Subtype and Socioeconomic Disparities

Background/Objectives: The two major subtypes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)—Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC)—are known to increase the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer (CRC). While this relationship has been well studied in Western populations, evidence from East Asia remains limited and inconsistent. Using nationwide cohort data, this study explored the potential connection between IBD and CRC in a large Korean population. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service–National Sample Cohort from 2005 to 2019. A total of 9920 CRC patients were matched 1:4 with 39,680 controls using propensity scores based on age, sex, income, and region. Overlap weighting and multivariable logistic regression were used to evaluate the association between IBD and CRC. Subgroup analyses were conducted to assess effect modification by demographic and clinical factors. Results: IBD markedly increased the likelihood of developing CRC (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.38; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.20–1.58; p < 0.001), with the association primarily driven by UC (aOR = 1.52; 95% CI: 1.27–1.83). CD appeared unrelated to heightened CRC risk overall, though a significant association was observed among low-income CD patients (aOR = 1.58; 95% CI: 1.15–2.16). The UC–CRC association persisted across all subgroups, including patients without comorbidities. Conclusions: Our findings support an independent association between IBD—particularly UC—and increased CRC risk in Korea. These results underscore the need for personalized CRC surveillance strategies that account for disease subtype, comorbidity burden, and socioeconomic status, especially in vulnerable subpopulations. Background: Social and financial services are essential for the inclusion and well-being of people with disabilities (PWDs), who often rely on family caregivers to access these systems. In Saudi Arabia, where disability inclusion is a strategic goal under Vision 2030, understanding caregiver experiences is crucial to identifying service gaps and improving accessibility. Objectives: This study aimed to explore caregivers’ perspectives on awareness, perceived barriers, and accessibility of social and financial services for PWDs in Saudi Arabia. The analysis is grounded in Andersen’s Behavioural Model of Health Service Use and the WHO’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 3353 caregivers of PWDs attending specialised day schools. The survey collected data on demographic characteristics, service awareness, utilisation, and perceived obstacles. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) identified latent constructs, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to test relationships between awareness, barriers, and accessibility. Results: Findings reveal that over 70% of caregivers lacked awareness of available services, and only about 3% had accessed them. Key challenges included technological barriers, complex procedures, and non-functional or unclear service provider platforms. Both User Barriers and Service Barriers were negatively associated with Awareness and Accessibility. Awareness, in turn, significantly predicted perceived Accessibility. Caregiver demographics, such as age, education, gender, and geographic location, also influenced awareness and service use. Conclusions: There is a pressing need for targeted awareness campaigns, accessible digital service platforms, and simplified service processes tailored to diverse caregiver profiles. Inclusive communication, decentralised outreach, and policy reforms are necessary to enhance service access and promote the societal inclusion of PWDs in alignment with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. Background/Objectives: Strengthening antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs is an invaluable intervention in the ongoing efforts to contain the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in low-resource settings. This study evaluates the impact of the Telementoring, Education, and Advocacy Collaboration initiative for Health through Antimicrobial Stewardship (TEACH AMS), which uses the virtual Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) learning model to enhance AMS capacity in Kenya, Ghana, and Malawi. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used, which included attendance data collection, facility-level assessments, post-session and follow-up surveys, as well as focus group discussions. Results: Between September 2023 and February 2025, 77 virtual learning sessions were conducted, engaging 2445 unique participants from hospital-based AMS committees and health professionals across the three countries. Participants reported significant knowledge gain, and data showed facility improvements in two core AMS areas, including the implementation of multidisciplinary ward-based interventions/communications and enhanced monitoring of antibiotic resistance patterns. Along those lines, participants reported that the program assisted them in improving prescribing and culture-based treatments, and also evidence-informed antibiotic selection. The evidence of implementing ward-based interventions was further stressed in focus group discussions, as well as other strengthened practices like point-prevalence surveys, and development or revision of stewardship policies. Substantial improvements in microbiology services were also shared by participants, particularly in Malawi. Other practices mentioned were strengthened multidisciplinary communication, infection prevention efforts, and education of patients and the community. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a virtual case-based learning educational intervention, providing structured and tailored AMS capacity building, can drive behavior change and strengthen healthcare systems in low resource settings. Future efforts should aim to scale up the engagements and sustain improvements to further strengthen AMS capacity. Full article

To address the limited flexibility of pumped storage power stations (PSPSs) under hierarchical clearing of energy and ancillary service markets, this study proposes a joint clearing mechanism for multi-level electricity markets. A bi-level optimization model based on the Stackelberg game is developed to characterize the strategic interaction between PSPSs and the market operator. Simulation results on the IEEE 30-bus system demonstrate that the proposed mechanism captures the dynamics of nodal supply and demand, as well as time-varying network congestion. It guides PSPSs to operate more flexibly and economically. Additionally, the mechanism increases PSPS profitability, reduces system costs, and improves frequency regulation performance. This game-theoretic framework offers quantitative decision support for PSPS participation in multi-level spot markets and provides insights for optimal storage deployment and market mechanism improvement. Analysis of the Trade-Off/Synergy Effect and Driving Factors of Ecosystem Services in Hulunbuir City, China

An in-depth understanding of the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecosystem service (ES) trade-offs and synergies, along with their driving factors, is crucial for formulating key ecological restoration strategies and effectively allocating ecological environmental resources in the Hulunbuir region. This study employed an integrated analytical approach combining the InVEST model, ArcGIS geospatial processing, R software environment, and Optimal Parameter Geographical Detector (OPGD). The spatiotemporal patterns and driving factors of the interaction of four major ES functions in Hulunbuir area from 2000 to 2020 were studied. The research findings are as follows: (1) carbon storage (CS) and soil conservation (SC) services in the Hulunbuir region mainly show a distribution pattern of high values in the central and northeast areas, with low values in the west and southeast. Water yield (WY) exhibits a distribution pattern characterized by high values in the central–western transition zone and southeast and low values in the west. For forage supply (FS), the overall pattern is higher in the west and lower in the east. (2) The trade-off relationships between CS and WY, CS and SC, and SC and WY are primarily concentrated in the western part of Hulunbuir, while the synergistic relationships are mainly observed in the central and eastern regions. In contrast, the trade-off relationships between CS and FS, as well as FS and WY, are predominantly located in the central and eastern parts of Hulunbuir, with the intensity of these trade-offs steadily increasing. The trade-off relationship between SC and FS is almost widespread throughout HulunBuir. (3) Fractional vegetation cover, mean annual precipitation, and land use type were the primary drivers affecting ESs. Among these factors, fractional vegetation cover demonstrates the highest explanatory power, with a q-value between 0.6 and 0.9. The slope and population density exhibit relatively weak explanatory power, with q-values ranging from 0.001 to 0.2. (4) The interactions between factors have a greater impact on the inter-relationships of ESs in the Hulunbuir region than individual factors alone. The research findings have facilitated the optimization and sustainable development of regional ES, providing a foundation for ecological conservation and restoration in Hulunbuir. Full article

With the arrival of an aging society and the continuous extension of the human lifespan, the quality of life has not improved in a corresponding manner. People’s demand for happiness and health is increasing. As a result, a model emerged that integrates tourism and medical services, which is health tourism. This growing demand has prompted many service providers to see it as a business opportunity and enter the market. Tourism can help travelers release work stress and restore physical and mental balance; meanwhile, health check-ups and disease treatment can help them regain health. Consumers have long favored health and medical tourism because it helps relieve stress and promotes overall well-being. As people age, some consumers experience a gradual decline in physical functions, making it difficult for them to participate in regular travel services provided by traditional travel agencies. Therefore, this study aims to explore the service needs of health and medical tourism customers (tourists/patients) and the interrelationships among these service needs, so that health and medical tourism service providers can develop more customized and diversified services. This study identifies four key drivers of medical tourism services: medical services, medical facilities, tour planning, and hospitality facilities. This study uses the APA (attention and performance analysis) method to assess each dimension and criterion and utilizes the DEMATEL method with the NRM (network relationship map) to identify network relationships. By combining APA and NRM techniques, this study develops the APA-NRM technique to evaluate adoption strategies and identify suitable paths for health tourism services, providing tailored development strategies and recommendations for service providers to enhance the service experience. Background: Burnout syndrome (BS) is an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Although there are underlying causes associated with personal attributes, it is generally linked to external factors within the work environment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of lifestyle factors on BS and its dimensions, as well as on suicidal ideation among Spanish professionals dedicated to implant dentistry. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in accordance with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. An electronic survey based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory—Human Services Survey (MBI–HSS) was distributed to members of the Spanish Society of Implants. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods. Results: A total of 305 participants (20.9%) responded to the questionnaire. Notably, 10.8% of the professionals reported experiencing suicidal thoughts, a factor significantly associated with the presence of BS. The lifestyle factors associated with BS included the following: not engaging in aerobic exercise for at least 30 min per day (p < 0.05), not having hobbies that facilitate mental disconnection from work (p < 0.001), not following a balanced diet (p < 0.0001), having an insufficient social life (p < 0.0001), and experiencing suicidal ideation (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The surveyed dentists generally reported having healthy lifestyle habits. Nevertheless, one in ten professionals acknowledged having experienced suicidal ideation at some point, highlighting a concerning association with BS. Full article
