Comparative Analysis of Fully Floating and Semi-Floating Ring Bearings in High-Speed Turbocharger Rotordynamics

This study presents a detailed experimental comparison of the rotordynamic and thermal performance of automotive turbochargers supported by two distinct hydrodynamic bearing configurations: fully floating ring bearings (FFRBs) and semi-floating ring bearings (SFRBs). While both designs are widely used in commercial turbochargers, they exhibit significantly different dynamic behaviors due to differences in ring motion and fluid film interaction. A cold air-driven test rig was employed to assess vibration and temperature characteristics across a range of controlled lubricant conditions. The test matrix included oil supply pressures from 2 bar (g) to 4 bar (g) and temperatures between 30 °C and 70 °C. Rotor speeds reached up to 200 krpm (thousands of revolutions per minute), and data were collected using a high-speed data acquisition system, triaxial accelerometers, and infrared (IR) thermal imaging. Rotor vibration was characterized through waterfall and Bode plots, while jump speeds and thermal profiles were analyzed to evaluate the onset and severity of instability. The results demonstrate that the FFRB configuration is highly sensitive to oil supply parameters, exhibiting strong subsynchronous instabilities and hysteresis during acceleration–deceleration cycles. In contrast, the SFRB configuration consistently provided superior vibrational stability and reduced sensitivity to lubricant conditions. Changes in lubricant supply conditions induced a jump speed variation in floating ring bearing (FRB) turbochargers that was approximately 3.47 times larger than that experienced by semi-floating ring bearing (SFRB) turbochargers. Furthermore, IR images and oil outlet temperature data confirm that the FFRB system experiences greater heat generation and thermal gradients, consistent with higher energy dissipation through viscous shear. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of both bearing types under realistic high-speed conditions and highlights the advantages of the SFRB configuration in improving turbocharger reliability, thermal performance, and noise suppression. The findings support the application of SFRBs in high-performance automotive systems where mechanical stability and reduced frictional losses are critical. Full article

To characterize a phenomenological model of a mechanical oscillator, it is important to know the properties of the envelope of the three main physical motion variables: deviation from equilibrium, velocity, and acceleration. Experimental data show that friction forces restrict the shape of these functions. A linear, exponential, or more abrupt decay can be observed depending on the different physical systems and conditions. This paper aimed to contribute to clarifying the role that some types of friction forces play in these shapes. Three types of friction—constant sliding friction, pressure drag proportional to the square of velocity, and friction drag proportional to velocity—were considered to characterize the line connecting the maxima and minima of displacement for a generic mechanical harmonic oscillator. The ordinary differential equation (ODE), describing the harmonic oscillator simultaneously containing the three types of dissipative forces (constant, viscous, and quadratic), was numerically solved to obtain energy dissipation, and the extrema of both displacement and velocity. The differential equation ruling the behavior of the amplitude, as a function of the friction force coefficients, was obtained from energy considerations. Solving this equation, we obtained analytical functions, parametrized by the force coefficients that describe the oscillator tail. A comparison between these functions and the predicted oscillator ODE extrema was made, and the results were in agreement for all the situations tested. Information from the velocity extrema and nulls was enough to obtain a second function that rules completely the ODE solution. The correlations obtained allow for the reverse operation: from the identified extremum data, it was possible to identify univocally the three friction coefficients fitting used in the model. Motion equations were solved, and some physical properties, namely energy conservation and work of friction forces, were revisited. Full article

Integer-order models cannot characterize the dynamic behavior of the flexible two-link manipulator (FTLM) system accurately due to its viscoelastic characteristics and flexible oscillation. Hence, this paper proposes a fractional-order modeling method and identification algorithm for the FTLM system. Firstly, we exploit the memory and history-dependent properties of fractional calculus to describe the flexible link’s viscoelastic potential energy and viscous friction. Secondly, we establish a fractional-order differential equation for the flexible link based on the fractional-order Euler–Lagrange equation to characterize the flexible oscillation process accurately. Accordingly, we derive the fractional-order model of the FTLM system by analyzing the motor–link coupling as well as the symmetry of the system structure. Additionally, a system identification algorithm based on the multi-innovation integration operational matrix (MIOM) is proposed. The multi-innovation technique is combined with the least-squares algorithm to solve the operational matrix and achieve accurate system identification. Finally, experiments based on actual data are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed modeling method and identification algorithm. The results show that the MIOM algorithm can improve system identification accuracy and that the fractional-order model can describe the dynamic behavior of the FTLM system more accurately than the integer-order model. This paper employs direct numerical simulation (DNS) to investigate the influence of blowing and suction control on the compressible fully developed turbulent flow within an infinitely long channel. The spanwise blowing strips are positioned at uniform intervals along the bottom wall of the channel, while the suction strips are symmetrically placed on the top wall. The basic flow (uncontrolled case) and the controlled cases involving global control and interval control are compared at Ma=0.8 and 1.5. Although the wall mass flow rate remains constant across all controlled cases, the applied blowing/suction intensity and spanwise strip areas exhibit significant variations. The numerical results indicate that augmenting the blowing/suction intensity will alter the velocity gradient of the viscous sublayer in the controlled region. Nonetheless, a reduction in the area of the controlled region diminishes the impact of blowing/suction on drag reduction on the entire wall. The spatially averaged velocity profiles on the wall for cases with identical wall mass flow rates are nearly indistinguishable, suggesting that the wall mass flow rate is the primary factor influencing the spatially averaged drag reduction rate on the entire wall, rather than the blowing/suction intensity or the injected energy. This is because the wall mass flow rate influences the average peak position of the Reynolds stress, which, in turn, affects the skin friction drag. An increase in the wall mass flow rate correlates with a heightened drag reduction rate on the blowing side, while simultaneously leading to a rising drag increase rate on the suction side. This study addresses the question: “Does the towing tank water temperature affect the result of model-ship extrapolation?” While it is well-established that temperature variations affect Reynolds numbers and consequently frictional and viscous resistance, this study examines whether the ITTC 1978 extrapolation method properly compensates for these effects. Although current procedures consider temperature indirectly through the Reynolds number, they assume that the form factor depends solely on the Froude number and is insensitive to viscosity changes. Our analysis reveals that the form factor is also temperature-sensitive, indicating a fundamental limitation in the conventional approach. This sensitivity arises from the limitations of the ITTC 1957 friction curve and the method’s neglect of temperature-induced variations in the form factor. To quantify the effect of temperature, model-scale CFD simulations were conducted for two ship models (KCS and KVLCC2) at different water temperatures using the ITTC 1978 procedure with Prohaska’s method. The results show that the ship-scale total resistance coefficient (CT) can vary by up to 2.8% depending on the water temperature and friction line selection. This demonstrates that the ITTC 1978 performance prediction method fails to adequately compensate for the temperature-induced changes in resistance, which leads to systematic errors in the extrapolated results. The propagation characteristics of shear waves in granular sediments are usually used to assess the dynamic response and liquefaction potential of marine engineering foundations. However, the mesoscopic processes by which the excitation frequency influences the shear wave propagation and attenuation remain unclear. In this study, based on a triaxial bender element (BE) test model, the shear wave behavior in uniform spherical particles was simulated by the discrete element method (DEM). It revealed that the BE excites shear waves in a point source manner and that the propagation processes within a triaxial unit cell assembly follow exponential attenuation patterns. Near the vibration source (10–100 kHz), the attenuation law of spherical wave propagation is dominated by friction slip and geometric diffusion in particles. At 0.7–3.5 wavelengths, the shear waves progressively transition to plane waves, and the attenuation law is governed by boundary absorption and viscous damping. At 2.9–10 wavelengths, near-field effects diminish, and planar wave propagation stabilizes. Higher excitation frequencies enhance friction slip, boundary absorption, and viscous damping, leading to frequency-dependent attenuation. The granular system exhibits segmented filtering, with cutoff frequencies dependent on the receiver location but independent of the excitation frequency. Full article

This study presents numerical simulations of the Aysén tsunami, which occurred on 21 April 2007. The tsunami was triggered by hundreds of landslides caused by a magnitude 6.2 earthquake. With an estimated wave height of 50 m at the northern tip of the Mentirosa Island, the event resulted in 10 fatalities and the destruction of multiple salmon farms along the fjord. We employed the NHWAVE and FUNWAVE-TVD numerical software to conduct a series of simulations using various landslide configurations and two approaches to model landslide motion: a viscous flow and a solid slide governed by Coulomb friction. The numerical results indicate that the solid landslide model without basal friction provides the most accurate representation of the measured in situ run-up heights and generates the largest inundation areas. Furthermore, the simulation results show that the arrival time of the tsunami waves was approximately 600 s. Our findings indicate that the volume of the landslide is the most critical factor in determining tsunami wave heights. Additionally, the Coulomb friction angle is another significant parameter to consider in the modeling process. Full article

The optimal design methodology for a Maxwell–Coulomb friction damper is proposed to minimize the resonant vibration of dynamic structures. The simple Coulomb friction damper has the problem of zero or little damping effect of the vibration of the spring–mass dynamic system at resonance. This problem is solved in the case of the Maxwell–Coulomb friction damper, which is formed by combining a Coulomb friction damper with a spring element in series. However, the design and analysis of the Maxwell–Coulomb friction damper become much more complicated. The optimal design methodology for this nonlinear damper is proposed in this article. The nonlinear equations of motion of the proposed damper are modelled, and its hysteresis loop can be constructed by combining four different cases of stick–slide motion. Motion responses of the turbine blade with the proposed damper are solved by a central difference solver. Optimal paths of damping and stiffness ratios are determined by the central difference Newton search method. The optimal experimental design is ascertained using a prototype damper test. Close correlation with its numerical simulations is observed in our hysteresis loop comparison. The performance of the proposed damper is also compared to that of a viscous damper in the seismic response design of adjacent single-story buildings. Full article

In this paper, we construct the conformable actuated pendulum model in the conformable Lagrangian formalism. We solve the equations of motion in the absence of force and in the case of a specific force resulting from torques, which generalizes a well known mechanical model. Our study shows that the conformable model captures essential information about the physical system encoded in the parameters which depend on the conformability factor α. This dependence can describe internal variations such as viscous friction, transmission, or environmental effects. We solve the equations of motion analytically for α=1/2 and using Frobenius’ method for α1/2. Full article

Aiming at the problem that conventional friction reducers used in fracturing cannot simultaneously possess properties such as temperature resistance, salt resistance, shear resistance, rapid dissolution, and low damage. Under the design concept of “medium-low molecular weight, salt-resistant functional monomer, supramolecular physical crosslinking aggregation, and enhanced chain mechanical strength”, acrylamide, sulfonic acid salt-resistant monomer 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, hydrophobic association monomer, and rigid skeleton functional monomer acryloyl morpholine were introduced into the friction reducer molecular chain by free radical polymerization, and combined with the compound suspension technology to develop a new type of multi-functional viscous friction reducer suspension (SAMD), the comprehensive performance of SAMD was investigated. The results indicated that the critical micelle concentration of SAMD was 0.33 wt%, SAMD could be dissolved in 80,000 mg/L brine within 3.0 min, and the viscosity loss of 0.5 wt% SAMD solution was 24.1% after 10 min of dissolution in 80,000 mg/L brine compared with that in deionized water, the drag reduction rate of 0.1 wt% SAMD solution could exceed 70% at 120 °C and still maintained good drag reduction performance in brine with a salinity of 100,000 mg/L. After three cycles of 170 s−1 and 1022 s−1 variable shear, the SAMD solution restored viscosity quickly and exhibited good shear resistance. The Tan δ (a parameter characterizing the viscoelasticity of the system) of 1.0 wt% SAMD solution was 0.52, which showed a good sand-carrying capacity, and the proppant settling velocity in it could be as low as 0.147 mm/s at 120 °C, achieving the function of high drag reduction at low concentrations and strong sand transportation at high concentrations. The viscosity of 1.4 wt% SAMD was 95.5 mPa s after shearing for 120 min at 140 °C and at 170 s−1. After breaking a gel, the SAMD solution system had a core permeability harm rate of less than 15%, while the SAMD solution also possessed the performance of enhancing oil recovery. Compared with common friction reducers, SAMD simultaneously possessed the properties of temperature resistance, salt resistance, shear resistance, rapid dissolution, low damage, and enhanced oil recovery. Therefore, the use of this multi-effect friction reducer is suitable for the development of unconventional oil reservoirs with a temperature lower than 140 °C and a salinity of less than 100,000 mg/L. A tapered roller bearing (TRB) is a specialized type of bearing with a high load-to-volume ratio, designed to support both radial and axial loads. Lubrication plays a crucial role in TRB operation by reducing friction and dissipating heat generated during rotation. However, it can also negatively impact TRB performance due to the viscous and inertial effects of the lubricant. Extensive research has been conducted to examine the role of lubrication in TRB performance. Lubrication primarily influences the frictional characteristics, thermal behavior, hydraulic losses, dynamic stability, and contact mechanics of TRBs. This paper aims to collect and classify the scientific literature on TRB lubrication based on these key aspects. Specifically, it explores the scope of research on the use of Newtonian and non-Newtonian lubricants in TRBs. Furthermore, this study analyzes research based on TRB size and type, considering both oil and grease as lubricants. The findings indicate that both numerical and experimental studies have been conducted to investigate Newtonian and non-Newtonian lubricants across various TRB sizes and types. However, the results highlight that limited research has focused on non-Newtonian lubricants in TRBs with an Outer Diameter (OD) exceeding 300 mm, i.e., those typically used in wind turbines, industrial gearboxes, and railways. Taking the plant as a total uncertainty in a black box with measurable inputs and attainable outputs, this paper presents a constructive control design of agnostic nonlinear dynamic systems with discontinuous input (such as hard nonlinearities in the forms of dead zones, friction, and backlashes). This study expands the model-free sliding mode control (MFSMC), based on the Lyapunov differential inequality, to a total model-free robust control (TMFRC) for this class of piecewise systems, which does not use extra adaptive online data fitting modelling to deal with plant uncertainties and input discontinuities. The associated properties are analysed to justify the constraints and provide assurance for system stability analysis. Numerical examples in control of a non-affine nonlinear plant with three hard nonlinear inputs—a dead zone, Coulomb and viscous friction, and backlash—are used to test the feasibility of the TMFRC. Furthermore, real experimental tests on a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) are also given to showcase the control’s applicability and offer guidance for implementation. Full article

In order to ensure the safety of existing buildings constructed many years ago in zones with high seismicity, it is very important to consider and apply retrofitting measures. The seismic retrofitting of buildings can be achieved by techniques such as increasing the stiffness and ductility of the building and reducing the seismic demand. Energy dissipative devices such as various types of dampers are among the most popular and widely studied devices for improving the performance of buildings exposed to earthquakes. This paper presents a systematic literature review of the seismic retrofitting of existing buildings using energy dissipating devices. More than 230 journal and conference articles were collected from three well-known scientific resources published from 2010 to 2024. The main classification of papers considered was based on energy-dissipating devices employed for retrofitting goals. According to this analysis, there is a vast number of energy dissipative devices and design methods studied by scholars, and energy dissipation based on friction, viscous, and hysteretic mechanisms are the most useful for dampers. High-Static–Low-Dynamic Stiffness (HSLDS) isolators have been extensively studied, primarily considering continuous stiffness and viscous damping, often overlooking stiffness discontinuities and dry friction forces. This paper aims to provide a more accurate model of real systems by investigating the dynamic behavior of HSLDS isolators, including piecewise nonlinear–linear stiffness, viscous damping, and dry friction. The equation of motion is analyzed using the Krylov–Bogoliubov–Mitropolsky (KBM) averaging method, deriving approximate analytical expressions to evaluate the frequency response curves and stability boundaries near primary resonance conditions. The model is validated by comparing the approximate solution with direct numerical integration and Den Hartog’s closed-form solution. A parametric analysis explores the impact of key parameters through amplitude–frequency diagrams and critical forcing boundaries. A numerical example is presented, demonstrating how the present method can be used to identify critical dynamic conditions, such as saddle-node bifurcations and activation of the piecewise restoring force nonlinearity. Results confirm the reliability of the KBM method in dealing with piecewise restoring forces while highlighting its limitations in case of high dry friction. This study offers an approximate yet effective approach for evaluating the system’s dynamic behavior, providing insights that could facilitate the design of isolation mounts and serve as benchmarks for future research. The accurate, robust, and efficient prediction of transition in viscous flows is a significant challenge in computational fluid dynamics. We present a coupled high-fidelity iterative approach that leverages the FUN3D flow solver and the LASTRAC stability code to predict transition in low-disturbance environments, initiated by the linear growth of boundary-layer instability modes. Our method integrates the ability of FUN3D to compute mixed laminar–transitional–turbulent mean flows via transition-sensitized Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations with the ability of LASTRAC to perform linear stability analysis, all within an automated framework that requires no intermediate user involvement. Unlike conventional frameworks that rely on classical stability theory or reduced-order metamodels, our approach employs parabolized stability equations to provide more accurate and reliable estimates of disturbance growth for multiple instability mechanisms, including Tollmien–Schlichting, Kelvin–Helmholtz, and crossflow modes. By accounting for the effects of mean-flow nonparallelism as well as the surface curvature, this approach lays the foundation for improved N-factor correlations for transition onset prediction in a broad class of flows. We apply this method to three distinct flow configurations: (1) flow over a zero-pressure-gradient flat plate, (2) the NLF-0416 airfoil with both natural and separation-induced transition, and (3) a 6:1 prolate spheroid, where transition is primarily driven by crossflow instability. For two-dimensional cases, a formulated intermittency distribution is used to model the transition zone between the laminar and fully turbulent flows. The results include comparisons with experimental measurements, similar numerical approaches, and transport-equation-based models, demonstrating good agreement in surface pressure coefficients, transition onset locations, and skin-friction coefficients for all three configurations. In addition to contributing a couple of new insights into boundary-layer transition in these canonical cases, this study presents a powerful tool for transition modeling in both research and design applications in aerodynamics.
