Antimicrobial resistance in bovine mastitis pathogens poses interconnected threats to dairy productivity and public health; however, longitudinal evidence on the association between veterinary oversight and lower resistance to critically important antimicrobials in tropical smallholder systems remains limited. This study analyzed 1347 quarter milk samples from 47 dairy farms in Saraburi Province, Thailand, submitted consecutively over five years (2020–2025), to evaluate whether participation in a veterinary-led herd health (HH) program was independently associated with reduced vancomycin resistance and multidrug resistance (MDR). Bacterial identification was conducted using standard methods, and susceptibility was determined using the Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion method. Among 1069 culture-positive samples, Streptococcus spp. (25.3%) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (16.8%) predominated. Vancomycin resistance declined from 15.9% to 5.4% between early (2020–2022) and recent (2023–2025) periods. Of the 686 isolates tested against ≥3 antibiotic classes, 61 (8.9%) were MDR; vancomycin resistance co-occurred in 34.4% of these samples. Repeated logistic regression identified non-HH farm status (OR = 4.035; p = 0.027) and early-year groups (OR = 4.611; p = 0.002) as independent risk factors for vancomycin resistance. As HH participation and year group showed a significant interaction, their joint effect for MDR was modeled: compared with non-HH farms in the early period (reference), all other combinations—including HH farms in 2023, HH farms in 2020, and non-HH farms in 2023—were associated with significantly lower odds of MDR. These findings provide the first evidence from Thailand that structured veterinary herd health programs are independently associated with lower critically important antimicrobial resistance, supporting their integration into a One-Health stewardship policy. The ethical and legal governance of Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAIs) remains conceptually and normatively fragmented. Although animals engaged in therapeutic, educational, and assistive activities make valuable contributions to human well-being, they continue to be defined by law as property or welfare objects, despite their meaningful yet limited forms of relational participation within structured human-controlled environments. This perspective obscures their context-dependent responsiveness and their institutional embeddedness. The present paper addresses this gap by adopting a normative and interdisciplinary approach grounded in relational legal theory and vulnerability scholarship. The concept is developed by drawing on Jennifer Nedelsky’s notion of relational autonomy and Martha Fineman’s theory of universal vulnerability. This results in the conceptualisation of AAI animals as correlated subjects: beings whose ethical and legal significance derives from the relationships and institutional contexts that shape their participation. The analysis identifies weaknesses in current medico-legal practices that frame veterinary certification and welfare assessment as static technical acts, ignoring their relational and systemic dimensions. The paper puts forward a relational ethical–legal framework for Animal-Assisted Interventions, centred on relational vulnerability, context-sensitive oversight and continuous institutional accountability. A number of practical recommendations are put forward, including the introduction of renewable ethical licences, inter-institutional monitoring and the establishment of multidisciplinary oversight mechanisms. By redefining animals’ normative status through relational ethics, in alignment with the interconnected human, animal, and environmental dimensions emphasized by the One Welfare principles, the study advances a shift from welfare-based protection toward a model of justice grounded in interspecies interdependence and institutional responsiveness. African swine fever (ASF) is a transboundary viral disease that has heavily impacted Southeast Asia since its introduction in 2019. Smallholder pig production systems in Cambodia and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (the Lao PDR), characterized by low biosecurity, free-ranging practices, and limited veterinary oversight, remain particularly vulnerable. To assess farmers’ awareness and practices regarding ASF, a knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) survey was implemented between March and September 2023 by Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières within the framework of the Biosecurity in Pig Farming (BIG) project. A total of 471 pig farmers, including 56% women, were interviewed across eight provinces using a standardized questionnaire (188 in Cambodia and 283 in the Lao PDR). Results showed that ASF awareness was generally high (92% in Cambodia, 66% in the Lao PDR), yet 15% of Cambodian and 30% of Lao respondents expressed doubts about the presence of ASF in their country. While recognition of ASF symptoms was moderate and positively correlated with farmers’ perceived capacity to identify the disease, knowledge of transmission pathways was low and often misaligned with perceptions. Airborne transmission was frequently cited as a risk, and the risks related to visitors and fomites were underestimated by more than 50% of the farmers. Implementation of biosecurity measures (BSM) was limited, with mean scores of 43% in Cambodia and 27% in the Lao PDR. Risky practices such as swill feeding, free-ranging, sharing of boars, traders, and inadequate carcass disposal remained widespread. Statistical analysis identified education level, herd size, knowledge, perceived risks, and perceived benefits of BSM as the main determinants of biosecurity implementation. Farmers with larger herds or stronger commercial orientation demonstrated higher biosecurity adoption, while misconceptions and knowledge gaps remained frequent among smallholder farmers. Strengthening awareness, promoting low-cost and feasible biosecurity practices, and integrating farmer-centred approaches are essential for reducing ASF transmission risks and improving the resilience of smallholder pig production systems in the region. Sustainable aquaculture is increasingly vital to meet global protein demands while ensuring fish product safety and environmental stewardship from a One Health perspective. This review addresses fish hygiene as a comprehensive, multi-stage challenge encompassing water quality management, pathogen control, antimicrobial stewardship, feeding practices, humane slaughter, post-harvest handling, and monitoring systems. We examined current practices and technologies that promote hygienic standards and reduce contamination risks across production cycles. The integration of biosecurity measures and alternative health-promoting agents contributes to disease prevention and reduces reliance on antimicrobials. Responsible drug administration aligned with regulatory frameworks minimizes residues and antimicrobial resistance. Feeding strategies incorporating sustainable and safe ingredients further support fish health and product quality. Critical control points during slaughter and post-harvest processing ensure microbial safety and prolong shelf life. Advanced monitoring and traceability systems enable real-time oversight and enhance food safety assurance. Finally, certification programs and robust regulatory policies are essential to standardize practices and facilitate access to international markets. Collectively, these strategies foster sustainable aquaculture that safeguards public health, maintains ecological integrity, and supports economic viability. African swine fever (ASF) remains a major threat to swine production in Central Luzon, Philippines. This study assessed ASF detection and farm-level risk factors in Central Luzon using a risk-based surveillance framework. Pooled blood samples from five pigs per farm were collected in 277 farms across seven provinces and tested by real-time PCR. The analysis yielded an apparent farm-level prevalence of 26.7% (95% CI: 21.6–32.3), defined by one pooled 5-pig blood sample per farm. However, these values reflect risk-based surveillance outcomes rather than population-representative prevalence. Detection varied by province, with high rates in Bataan (80.5%) and Nueva Ecija (55.0%), moderate detection in Zambales (24.3%), lower detection in Pampanga (5.0%) and Tarlac (20.0%), and no positives in Aurora or Bulacan. Survey data were available for 201 farms. Firth-penalized logistic regression identified the absence of perimeter fencing as the only statistically significant predictor of ASFV detection. Veterinary oversight and consultancy showed protective but non-significant trends. These results highlight structural and professional biosecurity gaps, emphasizing the need for expanded veterinary outreach, fencing support, and training to mitigate ASF risk in smallholder-dominated production systems. Backyard poultry systems (BPS) are the most widespread form of animal production worldwide, contributing to household economies and improving food availability. However, limited biosecurity measures and close human–animal interactions raise concerns regarding zoonotic disease transmission. In recent years, consumer-driven motivations have given rise to non-traditional BPS with differential attributes (BPS-DA), yet there is limited knowledge about their food production practices. This study aimed to characterize and compare practices across 25 BPS and 25 BPS-DA in the Metropolitan Region using surveys, interviews, and direct observations of egg collections and poultry slaughters. Eggs were the main animal product in both systems, with women primarily responsible for care. Poultry slaughter was reported exclusively in BPS (60%), generally performed under inadequate hygienic conditions and without veterinary oversight. These practices, (poultry slaughter, food production and handling), may considerably increase the risk of human exposure to zoonotic pathogens, such as avian influenza viruses. In contrast, BPS-DA prioritized birds as companion animals (60%), free-range rearing (68%), and hobby-based production (80%). While both systems showed limited biosecurity, significant differences were found in the use of dedicated footwear (p = 0.01; V = 0.35), egg collection sites (p = 0.04; V = 0.29), and refrigeration (p = 0.004; V = 0.41). Veterinary access was limited in both (32% in BPS; 44% in BPS-DA). These findings highlight critical gaps in health management and underscore the need for context-specific educational and regulatory strategies for safer backyard poultry production. Full article

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to public health, food security, and sustainable livestock production. Despite increasing concern, AMR remains poorly studied in cuniculture, particularly in regions where rabbit farming is predominantly small-scale and household-based. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and diversity of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in rabbit farms in northeastern Ukraine. Methods: A total of 100 fecal samples were collected from clinically healthy rabbits housed in two farms and one vivarium. DNA was extracted and analyzed using real-time PCR targeting 21 ARGs associated with resistance to major antibiotic classes, including tetracyclines, sulfonamides, β-lactams, macrolides, quinolones, carbapenems, and multidrug efflux systems. Results: A diverse and widespread resistome was identified. The most prevalent genes included sul1 (96%), blaTEM (95%), tetM (94%), and ermB (93%). AcrB (78%) and qnrS/oqxB (approximately 67%) were also frequently detected. Carbapenemase genes (blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM) were identified in 6% of samples, despite limited veterinary use of carbapenems. Notably, 96% of samples harbored ARGs from three or more antibiotic classes, indicating a high potential for multidrug resistance. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate a high prevalence and diversity of ARGs in rabbit farming systems in northeastern Ukraine. The presence of clinically significant resistance genes, including those conferring carbapenem resistance, underscores the urgent need for targeted AMR surveillance and improved antibiotic stewardship in cuniculture, particularly in regions with minimal regulatory oversight of antimicrobial use. Artificial intelligence is transforming higher education, particularly in flipped classroom settings, in which students learn independently prior to class and collaborate during in-person sessions. This study examines the role of ChatGPT as a virtual peer in a veterinary anatomy course centered on cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Over two academic years (2023–2025), 297 first-year veterinary students worked in small groups to explore anatomy through structured prompts in English and Spanish using ChatGPT versions 3.5 and 4. Activities involved analyzing AI output, evaluating anatomical accuracy, and suggesting alternative names for vascular variations. Learning outcomes were assessed using Bloom’s Taxonomy-based questions, and student perceptions were captured via online surveys. Progressive performance improvement was noted across three instructional phases, particularly in higher-level cognitive tasks (Bloom level 4). Responses to English prompts were more accurate than those to Spanish prompts. While students appreciated ChatGPT’s role in reinforcing knowledge and sparking discussion, they also flagged inaccuracies and emphasized the need for critical evaluation. Peer collaboration was found to be more influential than chatbot input. Conclusions: ChatGPT can enrich flipped anatomy instruction when paired with structured guidance. It supports content review, fosters group learning and promotes reflective thinking. However, developing digital literacy and ensuring expert oversight are essential to maximizing the educational value of AI. Full article

Increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) levels in Enterobacterales from pigs in Ghana prompted us to investigate farm feed, pig slurry, and farm water for Enterobacterales isolates, their antimicrobial resistance patterns, and antimicrobial residues. Between August and November 2024, we collected one sample each of feed, slurry, and water from 14 pig farms for microbiological analysis. Out of 42 samples, Enterobacterales (E. coli and Enterobacter spp.) were isolated from 30 (71.4%) samples, with the highest prevalence found in feed (85.7%), followed by slurry (78.6%) and water (50.0%). The prevalence of AMR to tetracyclines, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and ampicillin was high, with over 50% of isolates from slurry and water and 40% from feed exhibiting tetracycline resistance. Multi-drug resistance (MDR) was identified in nine (27.3%) isolates of Enterobacterales, with the highest prevalence found in feed (38.5%), then slurry (23.1%), and water (14.3%). Among 42 farm samples screened for colistin-resistant Enterobacterales, 10 (23.8%) exhibited phenotypic colistin resistance. No antimicrobial residues were detected. Risk factors associated with MDR included large farms with high pig turnover (p < 0.05) and the channelling of slurry into both covered and uncovered pits on the farm (p < 0.05). These high resistance levels underscore the urgent need for improved hygiene in feed, water, and slurry management, stricter antibiotic stewardship with veterinary oversight, and better enforcement of existing antibiotic use regulations on pig farms. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is the causative agent of caseous lymphadenitis, a significant infectious disease that affects small ruminants and poses economic challenges to livestock production. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of C. pseudotuberculosis in goats from Espírito Santo state, Brazil, and identify risk factors associated with infection by the bacterium. Serum samples from 145 goats were analyzed using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The overall seroprevalence was found to be 34.5%. The risk factors significantly associated with infection included the presence of abscesses and the absence of veterinary assistance on farms. The findings emphasize the need for improved management practices and veterinary oversight to mitigate caseous lymphadenitis transmission. This research provides critical insights into the epidemiology of caseous lymphadenitis in goats from Espírito Santo, informing effective disease control strategies. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global concern, influenced by antibiotic use in both human and veterinary medicine, especially in companion animals. In low- and middle-income countries, regulatory oversight on veterinary prescriptions is often limited, creating gaps that can accelerate AMR. This study aimed to characterize the use of antibiotics approved for human use that are prescribed by veterinarians for companion animals in Brazil, a country representative of broader regulatory challenges. We conducted a retrospective analysis of five years (2017–2021) of national sales data recorded by the National System for the Management of Controlled Products (SNGPC), maintained by the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency (ANVISA). A total of 789,893 veterinary antibiotic prescriptions were analyzed over the five-year period, providing a comprehensive overview of prescribing patterns. The dataset included all oral and injectable antibiotics purchased in human pharmacies with veterinary prescriptions. Data wrangling and cleaning procedures were applied to extract information on volume, antibiotic classes, seasonal variation, and regional distribution. The results revealed a predominance of penicillins, first- and second-generation cephalosporins, and a marked increase in macrolide use, especially azithromycin. Notable regional disparities were observed, with the southeastern region leading in prescription volume. The findings, particularly the disproportionate use of azithromycin and the marked regional disparities, highlight the need for targeted monitoring policies and a stricter regulation of off-label antibiotic use in veterinary medicine. They also offer insights applicable to other countries facing similar AMR threats due to limited surveillance and regulatory frameworks. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) constitutes a pressing and intensifying global health crisis, significantly exacerbated by the inappropriate utilization and excessive application of antibiotics in livestock agriculture. The excessive use of antibiotics, including prophylactic and metaphylactic administration as well as growth-promotion applications, exacerbates selective pressures, fostering the proliferation of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains. Pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus can be transmitted to humans through direct contact, contaminated food, and environmental pathways, establishing a clear link between livestock farming and human AMR outbreaks. These challenges are particularly pronounced in regions with limited veterinary oversight and weak regulatory frameworks. Addressing these issues requires the implementation of sustainable practices, enhanced antibiotic stewardship, and strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration. This review underscores the critical need for a One Health approach to mitigate AMR, recognizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health in safeguarding global public health. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to human, animal, and public health, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where the beef sector is vital to food security and livelihoods. We conducted a scoping review to explore the determinants and impacts of AMR within the beef value chain in SSA, highlighting the challenges and progress in mitigating AMR risks in livestock production. This review identifies key factors contributing to AMR, including the overuse and misuse of antimicrobials, inadequate veterinary oversight, and weak regulatory frameworks. These practices are prevalent across various stages of the beef value chain, from farm to slaughterhouse, and are exacerbated by informal markets and insufficient infrastructure. Our findings also highlight the role of environmental factors, such as contamination of feed, water, and manure, in the spread of resistant pathogens. Additionally, gaps in AMR surveillance, education, and enforcement limit effective control measures in the region. While efforts to combat AMR have gained momentum in some countries, including the development of national action plans and surveillance systems, substantial challenges remain. These include poor adherence to antimicrobial guidelines, insufficient veterinary training, and the lack of integration between sectors. There is a need for targeted research to better understand antimicrobial misuse, socio-economic drivers, and the environmental pathways of AMR, as well as the need for stronger regulatory frameworks and cross-border cooperation. Addressing these challenges will be essential to safeguarding food safety, public health, and the sustainability of the beef industry in SSA. Full article

National-Level Consumption of Antimicrobials in the Veterinary Sector in Uganda: A Report on Analysis of Import Data for 2021

Background: Antimicrobials are crucial for animal health and food security. However, their overuse in animals can lead to the emergence of resistant microorganisms. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a global public health threat that impacts both animal and human health. The objective of this study was to estimate the antimicrobial consumption (AMC) of veterinary antimicrobials at the national level using import data from January to December 2021, available from the Uganda National Drug Authority (NDA). Methods: The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) methodology was applied using the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification codes for veterinary medicines. Results: Approximately 88,387.37 kg (88.39 tonnes) of veterinary antimicrobials were consumed in 2021. Parenteral veterinary antimicrobials accounted for 63.8% (56,375.65 kg) and oral veterinary antibacterials accounted for 36.2% (32,011.71 kg). Tetracyclines were the single most consumed veterinary antimicrobial class, accounting for 62.7% of total consumption. Oxytetracycline was the most consumed antibacterial (58.4%), followed by sulphadiazine + trimethoprim (11.1%), penicillin g/dihydrostreptomycin (7.4%), penicillin G procaine + dihydrostreptomycin (6.8%), and tetracycline (3.5%), respectively. Out of all imported veterinary antimicrobials, 76% belonged to the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Highly Important Antimicrobials (HIA) category, 16% to the Critically Important (CIA), and 9% to the Highest Priority Critically Important (HPCIA) categories. Imported colistin accounted for 0.1% of total veterinary consumption. Conclusions: This study contributes to understanding antimicrobial consumption in Uganda’s livestock sector and, for the NDA, leaves in place a system for routine surveillance at a national level. We recommend strict regulatory oversight on the importation and use of colistin and macrolides to address AMR. Full article

Each year in the United States, thousands of sick, injured, or displaced wild animals are presented to individuals or organizations who have either a federal or state permit that allows them to care for these animals with the goal of releasing them back to the wild. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate the complexity of considerations rehabilitators and veterinarians face while trying to optimize the welfare of wild animals in need of care and rehabilitation. The process of rehabilitation is inherently stressful for wildlife. Maintaining an animal’s welfare during the rehabilitation process—from initial contact and tria+ge to the animal’s euthanasia, release, or captive placement—requires deliberate, timely and humane decision making. The welfare of wild animals can be improved by preventing human-related causes of admission, providing resources and support for wildlife rehabilitation (almost all rehabilitation in the United States is privately funded and access to veterinary care is often limited); further developing evidence-based wildlife rehabilitation methods and welfare measures, attracting more veterinary professionals to the field, harmonizing regulatory oversight with standards of care, training, and accountability, and increasing public education.
