To evaluate water pollution status and sustainable development potential in the Huai River Basin, this study focused on the spatiotemporal evolution and influencing factors of the grey water footprint (GWF) across 35 cities in the basin from 2005 to 2020. This study quantifies the GWF from agricultural, industrial, and domestic perspectives and analyzes its spatial disparities by incorporating spatial autocorrelation analysis. The Tapio decoupling model was applied to explore the relationship between pollution and economic growth, and geographic detectors along with the STIRPAT model were utilized to identify driving factors. The results revealed no significant global spatial clustering of GWF in the basin, but a pattern of “high in the east and west, low in the north and south” emerged, with high-value areas concentrated in southern Henan and northern Jiangsu. By 2020, 85.7% of cities achieved strong decoupling, indicating improved coordination between the environment and economy. Key driving factors included primary industry output, crop sown area, and grey water footprint intensity, with a notable interaction between agricultural output and grey water footprint intensity. The quantitative analysis based on the STIRPAT model demonstrated that seven factors, including grey water footprint intensity and total crop sown area, exhibited significant contributions to influencing variations. Ranked by importance, these factors were grey water footprint intensity > total crop sown area > urbanization rate > population size > secondary industry output > primary industry output > industrial wastewater discharge, collectively explaining 90.2% of the variability in GWF. The study provides a robust scientific basis for water pollution control and differentiated management in the river basin and holds significant importance for promoting sustainable development of the basin. Spatiotemporal Exposure to Heavy-Day Rainfall in the Western Himalaya Mapped with Remote Sensing, GIS, and Deep Learning

Heavy rainfall events, characterized by extreme downpours that exceed 100 mm per day, pose an intensifying hazard to the densely settled valleys of the western Himalaya; however, their coupling with expanding urban land cover remains under-quantified. This study mapped the spatiotemporal exposure of built-up areas to heavy-day rainfall (HDR) across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh and the adjoining areas by integrating daily Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Stations product (CHIRPS) precipitation (0.05°) with Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) built-up fractions within the Google Earth Engine (GEE). Given the limited sub-hourly observations, a daily threshold of ≥100 mm was adopted as a proxy for HDR, with sensitivity evaluated at alternative thresholds. The results showed that HDR is strongly clustered along the Kashmir Valley and the Pir Panjal flank, as demonstrated by the mean annual count of threshold-exceeding pixels increasing from 12 yr−1 (2000–2010) to 18 yr−1 (2011–2020), with two pixel-scale hotspots recurring southwest of Srinagar and near Baramulla regions. The cumulative high-intensity areas covered 31,555.26 km2, whereas 37,897.04 km2 of adjacent terrain registered no HDR events. Within this hazard belt, the exposed built-up area increased from 45 km2 in 2000 to 72 km2 in 2020, totaling 828 km2. The years with the most expansive rainfall footprints, 344 km2 (2010), 520 km2 (2012), and 650 km2 (2014), coincided with heavy Western Disturbances (WDs) and locally vigorous convection, producing the largest exposure increments. We also performed a forecast using a univariate long short-term memory (LSTM), outperforming Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) and linear baselines on a 2017–2020 holdout (Root Mean Square Error, RMSE 0.82 km2; measure of errors, MAE 0.65 km2; R2 0.89), projecting the annual built-up area intersecting HDR to increase from ~320 km2 (2021) to ~420 km2 (2030); 95% prediction intervals widened from ±6 to ±11 km2 and remained above the historical median (~70 km2). In the absence of a long-term increase in total annual precipitation, the projected rise most likely reflects continued urban encroachment into recurrent high-intensity zones. The resulting spatial masks and exposure trajectories provide operational evidence to guide zoning, drainage design, and early warning protocols in the region. Full article

With the acceleration of urbanization in China, water resources have become a key factor restricting regional sustainable development. Current research primarily examines the temporal or spatial variations in the water resources ecological footprint (WREF), with limited emphasis on the integration of both spatial and temporal scales. In this study, we collected the data and information from the 2005–2022 Statistical Yearbook and Water Resources Bulletin of the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA), and calculated evaluation indicators: WREF, water resources ecological carrying capacity (WRECC), water resources ecological pressure (WREP), and water resources ecological surplus and deficit (WRESD). We primarily analyzed the temporal and spatial variation in the per capita WREF and used the method of Geodetector to explore factors driving its temporal and spatial variation in the YRDUA. The results showed that: (1) From 2005 to 2022, the per capita WREF (total water, agricultural water, and industrial water) of the YRDUA generally showed fluctuating declining trends, while the per capita WREF of domestic water and ecological water showed obvious growth. (2) The per capita WREF and the per capita WRECC were in the order of Jiangsu Province > Anhui Province > Shanghai City > Zhejiang Province. The spatial distribution of the per capita WREF was similar to those of the per capita WRECC, and most areas effectively consume water resources. (3) The explanatory power of the interaction between factors was greater than that of a single factor, indicating that the spatiotemporal variation in the per capita WREF of the YRDUA was affected by the combination of multiple factors and that there were regional differences in the major factors in the case of secondary metropolitan areas. (4) The per capita WREF of YRDUA was affected by natural resources, and the impact of the ecological condition on the per capita WREF increased gradually over time. The impact factors of secondary metropolitan areas also clearly changed over time. Our results showed that the ecological situation of per capita water resources in the YRDUA is generally good, with obvious spatial and temporal differences. Full article

Hyperloop ultra-high-speed transport presents a transformative opportunity for future mobility systems in smart cities. However, assessing its socio-economic impact remains challenging due to Hyperloop’s unique technological, modal, and operational characteristics. As a novel, fifth mode of transportation—distinct from both aviation and rail—Hyperloop requires tailored evaluation tools for policymakers. This study proposes a custom-designed framework to quantify its macroeconomic effects through changes in gross domestic product (GDP) at the city level. Unlike traditional economic models, the proposed approach is specifically adapted to Hyperloop’s multimodality, infrastructure, speed profile, and digital-green footprint. A Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) model is developed and applied at two technology readiness levels (TRL-6 and TRL-9). Case studies of Glasgow, Berlin, and Busan are used to simulate impacts based on geo-spatial features and city-specific trade and accessibility indicators. Results indicate substantial GDP increases driven by factors such as expanded 60 min commute catchment zones, improved trade flows, and connectivity node density. For instance, under TRL-9 conditions, GDP uplift reaches over 260% in certain scenarios. The framework offers a scalable, reproducible tool for policymakers and urban planners to evaluate the economic potential of Hyperloop within the context of sustainable smart city development. Amid ongoing societal development, tourists’ travel behavior patterns have been undergoing substantial transformations, and understanding their evolution has emerged as a key area of scholarly interest. Taking Beijing as a case study, this research aims to uncover the spatiotemporal evolution patterns of tourist flows and their underlying driving mechanisms. Based on digital footprint relational data, a dual-perspective analytical framework—“tourist perception–tourist flow network”—is constructed. By integrating the center-of-gravity model, social network analysis, and regression models, the study systematically examines the dynamic spatial structure of tourist flows in Beijing from 2012 to 2024. The findings reveal that in the post-pandemic period, Beijing tourists place greater emphasis on the cultural connotation and experiential aspects of destinations. The gravitational center of tourist flows remains relatively stable, with core historical and cultural blocks retaining strong appeal, though a slight shift has occurred due to policy influences and emerging attractions. The evolution of the spatial network structure reveals that tourism flows have become more dispersed, while the influence of core scenic spots continues to intensify. Government policy orientation, tourism information retrieval, and the agglomeration of tourism resources significantly promote the structure of tourist flows, whereas the general level of tourism resources exerts no notable influence. These findings offer theoretical insights and practical guidance for the sustainable development and regional coordination of tourism in Beijing, and provide a valuable reference for the spatial restructuring of urban tourism in the post-COVID-19 era. Building height information plays an important role in many urban-related applications, such as urban planning, disaster management, and environmental studies. With the rapid development of real scene maps, street view images are becoming a new data source for building height estimation, considering their easy collection and low cost. However, existing studies on building height estimation primarily utilize remote sensing images, with little exploration of height estimation from street-view images. In this study, we proposed a deep learning-based method for estimating the height of a single building in Baidu panoramic street view imagery. Firstly, the Segment Anything Model was used to extract the region of interest image and location features of individual buildings from the panorama. Subsequently, a cross-view matching algorithm was proposed by combining Baidu panorama and building footprint data with height information to generate building height samples. Finally, a Two-Branch feature fusion model (TBFF) was constructed to combine building location features and visual features, enabling accurate height estimation for individual buildings. The experimental results showed that the TBFF model had the best performance, with an RMSE of 5.69 m, MAE of 3.97 m, and MAPE of 0.11. Compared with two state-of-the-art methods, the TBFF model exhibited robustness and higher accuracy. The Random Forest model had an RMSE of 11.83 m, MAE of 4.76 m, and MAPE of 0.32, and the Pano2Geo model had an RMSE of 10.51 m, MAE of 6.52 m, and MAPE of 0.22. The ablation analysis demonstrated that fusing building location and visual features can improve the accuracy of height estimation by 14.98% to 69.99%. Moreover, the accuracy of the proposed method meets the LOD1 level 3D modeling requirements defined by the OGC (height error ≤ 5 m), which can provide data support for urban research. Full article

Urban agriculture (UA) is emerging as a promising strategy for sustainable food production in response to growing environmental pressures. Indoor vertical farming (IVF), combining Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) with Building-Integrated Agriculture (BIA), enables efficient resource use and year-round crop cultivation in urban settings. This study assesses the environmental performance of a prospective IVF system located on a university campus in Portugal, focusing on the integration of photovoltaic (PV) energy as an alternative to the conventional electricity grid (GM). A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted using the Environmental Footprint (EF) method and the LANCA model to account for land use and soil-related impacts. The PV-powered system demonstrated lower overall environmental impacts, with notable reductions across most impact categories, but important trade-offs with decreased soil quality. The LANCA results highlighted cultivation and packaging as key contributors to land occupation and transformation, while also revealing trade-offs associated with upstream material demands. By combining EF and LANCA, the study shows that IVF systems that are not soil-based can still impact soil quality indirectly. These findings contribute to a broader understanding of sustainability in urban farming and underscore the importance of multi-dimensional assessment approaches when evaluating emerging agricultural technologies. Urban socioeconomic modeling has predominantly concentrated on extensive location and neighborhood-based features, relying on the localized population footprint. However, networks in urban systems are common, and many urban modeling methods do not account for network-based effects. Additionally, network-based research has explored a multitude of data from urban landscapes. However, achieving a comprehensive understanding of urban mobility proves challenging without exhaustive datasets. In this study, we propose using commute information records from the census as a reliable and comprehensive source to construct mobility networks across cities. Leveraging deep learning architectures, we employ these commute networks across U.S. metro areas for socioeconomic modeling. We show that mobility network structures provide significant predictive performance without considering any node features. Consequently, we use mobility networks to present a supervised learning framework to model a city’s socioeconomic indicator directly, combining Graph Neural Network and Vanilla Neural Network models to learn all parameters in a single learning pipeline. In experiments in 12 major U.S. cities, the proposed model achieves considerable explanatory performance and is able to outperform previous conventional machine learning models based on extensive regional-level features. Providing researchers with methods to incorporate network effects in urban modeling, this work also informs stakeholders of wider network-based effects in urban policymaking and planning. The distribution of forest aboveground biomass density (AGBD) is a key indicator of carbon stock and ecosystem health in the Eastern Himalayas, which represents a global biodiversity hotspot that sustains diverse forest types across an elevation gradient from lowland rainforests to alpine meadows and contributes to the livelihoods of more than 200 distinct indigenous communities. This study aimed to identify the key factors influencing forest AGBD across this region by analyzing the underlying biophysical and anthropogenic drivers through machine learning (random forest). We processed AGBD data from the Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) spaceborne LiDAR and applied filtering to retain 30,257 high-quality footprints across ten ecoregions. We then analyzed the relationship between AGBD and 17 climatic, topographic, soil, and anthropogenic variables using random forest regression models. The results revealed significant spatial variability in AGBD (149.6 ± 79.5 Mg ha−1) across the region. State-wise, Sikkim recorded the highest mean AGBD (218 Mg ha−1) and Manipur the lowest (102.8 Mg ha−1). Within individual ecoregions, the Himalayan subtropical pine forests exhibited the highest mean AGBD (245.5 Mg ha−1). Topographic factors, particularly elevation and latitude, were strong determinants of biomass distribution, with AGBD increasing up to elevations of 2000 m before declining. Protected areas (PAs) consistently showed higher AGBD than unprotected forests for all ecoregions, while proximity to urban and agricultural areas resulted in lower AGBD, pointing towards negative anthropogenic impacts. Our full model explained 41% of AGBD variance across the Eastern Himalayas, with better performance in individual ecoregions like the Northeast India-Myanmar pine forests (R2 = 0.59). While limited by the absence of regionally explicit stand-level forest structure data (age, stand density, species composition), our results provide valuable evidence for conservation policy development, including expansion of PAs, compensating avoided deforestation and modifications in shifting cultivation. Future research should integrate field measurements with remote sensing and use high-resolution LiDAR with locally derived allometric models to enhance biomass estimation and GEDI data validation. Flood control infrastructure is essential for the development of cities and the population’s well-being. The goal is to protect human and economic resources by reducing the inundation area and controlling the flood level and peak discharges. Detention basins can do this by storing a large volume of water to be released after the peak discharge. By doing this, a large amount of energy is stored, which can be recovered via micro-hydropower. In addition, as the release flow is controlled and almost constant, Pumps as Turbines (PAT) could be a feasible and economic option in these cases. Thus, this study investigates the feasibility of micro-hydropower (MHP) in urban detention basins, using the Santa Lúcia detention basin in Belo Horizonte as a case study. The methodology involved hydrological modeling, hydraulic analysis, and economic and environmental assessment. The results demonstrated that PAT selection has a crucial role in the feasibility of the MHP, and exploiting rainfall with lower intensities but higher frequencies is more attractive. Using multiple PATs with different operating points also showed promising results in improving energy production. In addition to the economic benefits, the MHP in the detention basin produces minimal environmental impact and, as it exploits a wasted energy source, it also reduces the carbon footprint in the urban water cycle. Analyses of student mobility are typically conducted in an urban environment and are informed by socio-demographic or trip attributes. The prevailing focus is on individual modes of transport, different groups of commuters travelling to campus, students’ behavioural perceptions, and the totality of student trips. This paper starts with the identification of the determinants of student mobility that have received insufficient research attention. Utilising surveys, the study captures the mobility patterns of a sample of 1014 students and calculates their carbon footprint (CF; in kg/academic year) to assess whether the factors neglected in previous studies influence differences in the actual environmental load of student commuting. A regression analysis is employed to ascertain the significance of these factors as predictors of sustainable student mobility. This study exclusively focuses on the group of student commuters to campus and analyses the trips associated with compulsory activities at a suburban campus that is distant from the university centre and student facilities, which changes the mobility context in terms of commuting options. The under-researched factors identified in this research have not yet been quantified as CF. The findings confirm that only some of the factors neglected in previous research are statistically significant predictors of the local environmental load of student mobility. Specifically, variables such as student employment, frequency of class attendance, and propensity for ride-sharing could be utilised to forecast and regulate students’ mobility towards more sustainable patterns. However, all of the under-researched factors (including household size, region of origin (i.e., past experiences), residing at term-time accommodation while studying, and the availability of a family car) have an influence on the differences in CF magnitude in the studied campus. This paper presents a large-scale empirical study aimed at identifying the optimal local deep learning model and data volume for deploying intrusion detection systems (IDS) on resource-constrained IoT devices using federated learning (FL). While previous studies on FL-based IDS for IoT have primarily focused on maximizing accuracy, they often overlook the computational limitations of IoT hardware and the feasibility of local model deployment. In this work, three deep learning architectures—a deep neural network (DNN), a convolutional neural network (CNN), and a hybrid CNN+BiLSTM—are trained using the CICIoT2023 dataset within a federated learning environment simulating up to 150 IoT devices. The study evaluates how detection accuracy, convergence speed, and inference costs (latency and model size) vary across different local data scales and model complexities. Results demonstrate that CNN achieves the best trade-off between detection performance and computational efficiency, reaching ~98% accuracy with low latency and a compact model footprint. The more complex CNN+BiLSTM architecture yields slightly higher accuracy (~99%) at a significantly greater computational cost. Deployment tests on Raspberry Pi 5 devices confirm that all three models can be effectively implemented on real-world IoT edge hardware. These findings offer practical guidance for researchers and practitioners in selecting scalable and lightweight IDS models suitable for real-world federated IoT deployments, supporting secure and efficient anomaly detection in urban IoT networks. A Techno-Economic Analysis of Integrating an Urban Biorefinery Process Within a Wastewater Treatment Plant to Produce Sustainable Wood Adhesives

Societies are aiming to have a higher ecological consciousness in wastewater treatment operations and achieve a more sustainable future. With this said, global demands for larger quantities of resources and the consequent waste generated will inevitably lead to the exhaustion of current municipal wastewater treatment works. The utilization of biosolids (particularly microbial proteins) from wastewater treatment operations could generate a sustainable bio-adhesive for the wood industry, reduce carbon footprint, mitigate health concerns related to the use of carcinogenic components, and support a more circular economic option for wastewater treatment. A techno-economic analysis for three 10 MGD wastewater treatment operations producing roughly 11,300 dry pounds of biosolids per day, in conjunction with co-feedstock defatted soy flour protein at varying ratios (i.e., 0%, 15%, and 50% wet weight), was conducted. Aspen Capital Cost Estimator V12 was used to design and estimate installed equipment additions for wastewater treatment plant integration into an urban biorefinery process. Due to the mechanical attributes and market competition, the chosen selling prices of each adhesive per pound were set for analysis as USD 0.75 for Plant Option P1, USD 0.85 for Plant Option P2, and USD 1.00 for Plant Option P3. Over a 20-year life, each plant option demonstrated economic viability with high NPVs of USD 107.9M, USD 178.7M, and USD 502.2M and internal rates of return (IRRs) of 24.0%, 29.0%, and 44.2% respectively. The options examined have low production costs of USD 0.14 and USD 0.19 per pound, minimum selling prices of USD 0.42–USD 0.51 per pound, resulting in between 2- and 4-year payback periods. Sensitivity analysis shows the effects biosolid production fluctuations, raw material market price, and adhesive selling price have on economics. The results proved profitable even with large variations in the feedstock and raw material prices, requiring low market selling prices to reach the hurdle rate of examination. This technology is economically enticing, and the positive environmental impact of waste utilization encourages further development and analysis of the bio-adhesive process. Full article

Automated parcel lockers (APLs) are transforming urban last-mile delivery by reducing failed distributions, decoupling delivery from recipient availability, optimizing carrier routes, reducing carbon foot-print and mitigating traffic congestion. The paper investigates the optimal design of APLs systems under stochastic demand and operational constraints, formulating the problem as a resource allocation optimization with service-level guarantees. We proposed a data-driven discrete-event simulation (DES) model implemented in ARENA to (i) determine optimal locker configurations that ensure customer satisfaction under stochastic parcel arrivals and dwell times, (ii) examine utilization patterns and spatial allocation to enhance system operational efficiency, and (iii) characterize inventory dynamics of undelivered parcels and evaluate system resilience. The results show that the configuration of locker types significantly influences the system’s ability to maintain high customers service levels. While flexibility in locker allocation helps manage excess demand in some configurations, it may also create resource competition among parcel types. The heterogeneity of locker utilization gradients underscores that optimal APLs configurations must balance locker units with their size-dependent functional interdependencies. The Dickey–Fuller GLS test further validates that postponed parcels exhibit stationary inventory dynamics, ensuring scalability for logistics operators. As a theoretical contribution, the paper demonstrates how DES combined with time-series econometrics can address APLs capacity planning in city logistics. For practitioners, the study provides a decision-support framework for locker sizing, emphasizing cost–service trade-offs. Full article

This study introduces Edible Streets as a distinct and scalable model of community-led urban food growing, specifically investigating the drivers and barriers to the initiative. Unlike traditional urban food-growing initiatives, Edible Streets explores the integration of edible plants into street verges and footpaths with direct community involvement of the people who live/work in a street. This study contributes new knowledge by evaluating Edible Streets through the COM-B model of behavioural change, through policy and governance in addition to behaviour change, and by developing practical frameworks to facilitate its implementation. Focusing on Oxford, the research engaged residents through 17 in-person interviews and 18 online surveys, alongside a stakeholder workshop with 21 policymakers, community leaders, and NGO representatives. Findings revealed strong motivation for Edible Streets, driven by values of sustainability, community resilience, and improved well-being. However, capability barriers, including knowledge gaps in gardening, land-use policies, and food preservation, as well as opportunity constraints related to land access, water availability, and environmental challenges, hindered participation. To address these, a How-to Guide was developed, and a pilot Edible Street project was launched. Future steps include establishing a licensing application model to facilitate urban food growing and conducting a Post-Use Evaluation and Impact Study. Nationally, this model could support Right to Grow policies, while globally, it aligns with climate resilience and food security goals. Locally grown food enhances biodiversity, reduces carbon footprints, and strengthens social cohesion. By tackling key barriers and scaling solutions, this study provides actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners to create resilient, equitable urban food systems. Full article
