Brownfield-transformed urban parks, particularly those derived from industrial heritage, play a critical role in both cultural preservation and public-space provision. However, existing studies often rely on linear models and general urban contexts, limiting their ability to capture nonlinear, interaction-driven perception and translate analytical results into design-oriented insights. To address this gap, this study develops an interpretable data-driven framework integrating NLP (natural language processing) with explainable machine learning. Using social media reviews from Shougang Park in Beijing, built environmental elements are identified and structured into four dimensions—Accessibility, Safety, Comfort, and Enjoyment. An XGBoost model combined with SHAP analysis is employed to examine variable importance, nonlinear relationships, and interaction effects. The results reveal that visitor satisfaction is governed by heterogeneous and nonlinear relationships rather than independent additive effects. Several variables exhibit threshold-like, diminishing, and inverted-U-shaped patterns, indicating sensitivity to intensity ranges. More importantly, spatial perception emerges from the nonlinear coupling of multiple elements, forming four representative interaction types: compensatory, inverted-U-shaped, context-dependent, and threshold-like relationships. Key interactions are concentrated around industrial landscape, leisure activities, and supporting facilities. Building on these findings, the study translates interactions into design-oriented strategies, emphasizing synergistic configuration, functional balance, moderated development intensity, and context- sensitive programming. By linking interpretable machine learning with spatial design, this research advances an interaction-oriented paradigm and provides a transferable framework for satisfaction-informed evaluation and optimization of brownfields. Urban overheating poses major challenges in Mediterranean cities, affecting public health and well-being. This study comparatively evaluates how alternative greening configurations influence urban microclimate and outdoor thermal comfort in a brownfield regeneration site in Imola, Italy, using ENVI-met simulations under a representative extreme summer condition. Eight scenarios with varying vegetation density, structure, and spatial arrangement were modelled on the hottest day of the year, and the Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) was evaluated at representative times. Results show that greening reduces heat stress, though its effectiveness varies over time and across configurations. No meaningful cooling occurred at 5:00 a.m., confirming that vegetation has a limited impact during nocturnal radiative processes. At 9:00 a.m., the medium-density scenario (S2b) achieved the greatest PET reduction (~2 °C), suggesting favorable evapotranspiration conditions under moderate radiation. At 4:00 p.m., the distributed high-density scenario (S3.2b) provided the strongest mitigation (~1.8–2 °C). Distributed layouts outperformed clustered ones, highlighting the non-linear nature of vegetation cooling. Zonal analysis showed the largest cooling in public green areas, followed by parking, building, and path zones, demonstrating the influence of surface type and shading geometry. Greening also produced modest improvements in surrounding neighborhoods (up to 0.8 °C in the morning), although impacts remained localized. Overall, results highlight how vegetation quantity, structure, and spatial distribution influence cooling performance under critical summer conditions, supporting climate-responsive urban regeneration design. These findings contribute to sustainable urban planning by supporting nature-based strategies for climate adaptation and improved environmental quality in regenerating urban districts. Future work should consider seasonal vegetation dynamics and multi-objective design optimization. Full article

This study investigates the effects of socioeconomic characteristics, density, built environment, and urban spatial structure on vehicle miles traveled (VMT) across 461 urbanized areas in the United States. Using multiple regression models, we compare the explanatory power of conventional variables with those representing the spatial distribution of major urban elements, such as population, employment, land use, and travel demand to city centers. The results show that population-weighted distance to the city center and the contiguity of high-intensity land use significantly influence vehicle travel, with greater distances from city centers and more fragmented land use leading to higher VMT. Models incorporating urban spatial structure variables exhibit improved explanatory power and better fit than those including only socioeconomic, density, and built environment variables. These findings demonstrate that urban spatial structure captures key aspects of vehicle travel behavior that are overlooked by traditional measures. Policy implications include the promotion of compact, mixed-use development, infill and brownfield redevelopment, and urban growth boundaries to reduce vehicle dependence. The study highlights the importance of spatial planning in managing urban travel demand and offers a refined analytical framework for examining the interplay between urban form and mobility. Currently, many industrial cities in Northeast China are grappling with a surge in brownfields, population loss, and environmental degradation, largely driven by industrial decline. Consequently, brownfield regeneration has emerged as a critical pathway for exploring sustainable development in shrinking cities. This study investigates the regeneration potential of urban brownfields against the backdrop of population shrinkage and aging. Under the framework of Ecosystem Service Theory, this study adopts the Fulaerji District of Qiqihar City as a representative case, integrating its four key categories of ecosystem services into a three-dimensional “economic–social–environmental” evaluation framework. This approach facilitates the transformation of Ecosystem Service Theory from a conventional post-regeneration evaluation tool into a pre-regeneration framework for assessing potential and determining site prioritization. A tripartite evaluation system was constructed, integrating economic vitality (e.g., the population shrinkage index, the proportion of the elderly population, and transportation accessibility), social culture (e.g., the industrial heritage proximity index), and ecological regulation functions (e.g., proximity of green spaces and importance of ecosystem services). Leveraging multi-source geospatial data, land surveys, and field inspections, 12 candidate brownfield sites were identified. GIS spatial analysis and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) were employed to decipher their spatial distribution patterns and comprehensive potential grades. The findings reveal the following: (1) The evaluation results exhibit distinct spatial characteristics: high-potential sites, clustered near transport hubs and policy-supported zones, demonstrate multi-dimensional advantages, while low-potential sites, constrained by aging demographics, poor accessibility, and ecological vulnerability, are predominantly located on the urban periphery. (2) Correlation analysis between potential grades and various evaluation indicators, combined with a cross-comparison of population shrinkage levels and average values of other evaluation indicators across different potential grades, reveals that neither the population shrinkage index nor the elderly population proportion exerts a systematic negative impact on industrial brownfield regeneration potential. This finding indicates that within specific urban development contexts, brownfield regeneration potential is influenced more by structural factors such as locational conditions, policy support, and ecological service functions than by singular demographic trends. This research provides both theoretical foundation and decision-making support for differentiated brownfield regeneration and spatial governance in population-shrinking cities. Full article

In the face of mounting challenges related to limited availability of urban land and ecological degradation, emerging novel ecosystems offer unique opportunities for ecological regeneration, social redefinition of space, and alternative urban visions. This study presents the multi-layer analysis of the Goccia Forest in Milan (Italy), a wild urban woodland that has developed over sealed and polluted post-industrial land, aiming to investigate the potential of this novel ecosystem to sustain Nature-based Solutions (NbSs). Using an integrated approach (surveys on fauna, vascular flora, lichens, analysis of forest evolution, mapping of sealed surfaces, and soil characterization) the research looks at the novel ecosystem as a whole, highlighting its ecological dynamics and Ecosystem Services (ES). La Goccia Forest serves as a prime example of how the implementation of NbSs is intricately intertwined with the spontaneous regeneration of urban brownfields. The present study offers the opportunity to rethink urban policies, ensuring their alignment with the demands of the population and the latest scientific knowledge. Full article

Urbanization profoundly transforms ecosystems, often resulting in habitat loss and biodiversity decline. Urban spontaneous plants, which are established naturally without human intervention, play a critical role in urban ecosystems by providing habitats, mitigating urban heat islands, and acting as indicators of environmental changes. Multidimensional urbanization, encompassing vertical and horizontal scale, exerts a significant influence on the biodiversity of green space. While previous studies have extensively examined the effects of horizontal spatial scales (such as land use and population density), the impacts of vertical spatial scales remain understudied. To elucidate the spatial patterns and driving factors of spontaneous plant diversity under multidimensional urbanization, we conducted a comprehensive survey of spontaneous plants across Changchun, a rapidly urbanizing city in northeast China. We established 1147 herbaceous plots within 245 urban green space patches across 38 sites and analyzed the effects of multidimensional urbanization metrics on spontaneous plant diversity. A total of 408 species of spontaneous plants were recorded, with herbs as the dominant life-form (89.2%), 322 are native species (78.9%), and 21.1% non-native species (of which 65.1% are invasive), primarily dispersed by autochory. Significant differences in plant diversity indices were observed across various urban green spaces and habitat types in Changchun, with native plant diversity generally highest in square green spaces and scrub gaps, while non-native plant diversity was most prominent in brownfield sites and showed no significant variation among habitat types. Regression analyses revealed that, in addition to patch characteristic factors (including patch area, perimeter–area ratio, and landscape shape index), the richness of total, native, and autochorous spontaneous plants was primarily influenced by vertical urbanization (as indicated by building volume), with building volume positively associated with species richness. In contrast, the richness of non-native and anemochorous plants was also significantly affected by horizontal urbanization factors, such as the proportion of impervious surface within a 100 m buffer zone and distance from patch to city center. The results reveal distinct spatial patterns of spontaneous plant diversity driven by both urbanization of horizontal spatial scales and vertical spatial scales. Our study provides new insights into the interplay between multidimensional urbanization and biodiversity, offering a theoretical foundation for integrating biodiversity conservation into sustainable urban planning and ecosystem management. Starting from the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century to date, urban areas have faced increasing environmental challenges due to the diffusion of harmful substances, resulting from vehicular traffic, the activities of different industries, waste, and building construction, etc. These pollutants are dangerous, since they pose a threat to both the environment and human health. Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly and low-cost technique that uses plants and their associated microorganisms to clean-up contaminated sites. In this review, we explore its main applications in urban settings. Specifically, we investigate how phytoremediation works, highlighting the most effective plants for its success in a city context. Moreover, we also describe the main factors influencing its effectiveness, such as soil, climate, and pollutants. In this regard, several case studies, conducted worldwide, have reported on how phytoremediation can successfully reclaim contaminated areas, transforming them into reusable city green spaces, with reduced costs compared to traditional remediation techniques (e.g., soil replacement, soil washing, etc.). Moreover, by integrating it into urban planning, cities can address environmental pollution, while promoting biodiversity, enhancing the landscape, and increasing its social acceptance. This nature-based solution offers a practical path toward more sustainable and resilient urban environments, especially in regard to the climate change framework. Full article

Urban transportation systems face increasing pressure to reduce car dependency and greenhouse gas emissions while supporting sustainable growth. This study addresses the lack of integrated modeling approaches that capture both spatial and temporal dynamics in transport planning. It develops a novel framework combining System Dynamics (SD) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assess the sustainability of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) strategies and parking policies in two brownfield redevelopment sites in Montreal. The framework embeds spatial metrics, such as proximity to transit, parking availability, and active transportation infrastructure into dynamic feedback loops. Using scenario analysis, the study compares a baseline reflecting current norms with an intervention scenario emphasizing higher density near transit, reduced parking ratios, and improved walkability and bike infrastructure. The results suggest that aligning TOD principles with targeted parking limits and investments in active mobility can substantially reduce car ownership and emissions. While primarily conceptual, the model provides a foundation for location-sensitive, feedback-driven planning tools that support sustainable urban mobility. Full article

Brownfields are abundant, widely dispersed, and subject to complex contamination, resulting in waste land, ecological degradation, and barriers to economic growth. The accurate identification of brownfield sites is key to formulating effective remediation and reuse strategies. However, the heterogeneity of surface features poses significant challenges for identifying various types of brownfields across entire urban areas. To address these challenges, this study proposes a “Target–Classification–Modification” (TCM) method for brownfield identification, which was applied to Tangshan City, China. This method consists of a three-stage process: target area localization, visual interpretation and classification, and site-level modification. It leverages integrated multi-source open-access data and clear rules for subtype classification and the determination of spatial boundaries and abandonment status. The results for Tangshan show that (1) the overall accuracy of the TCM method reached 84.9%; (2) a total of 1706 brownfield sites were identified, including 422 raw-material mining sites, 576 raw-material manufacturing sites, and 708 non-raw-material manufacturing sites; (3) subtype analysis revealed distinct spatial distribution and morphological patterns, driven by resource endowments, transportation networks, and industrial space organization. The TCM method improved the identification efficiency by 34.7% through precise target-area localization. It offers well-defined criteria to distinguish different brownfield subtypes. In addition, it employs a multi-approach strategy to determine the abandonment status, further enhancing accuracy. This method is scalable and widely applicable, providing support for urban-scale brownfield research and practice. Full article

Ecological restoration and brownfield reuse are important issues in the current field of urban sustainable development and environmental protection. This paper adopts bibliometric and network analysis methods, using more than 600 literature from Web of Science (WOS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases as research objects, to analyze the research trends, main researchers, contributions of different disciplines, and research hotspots in ecological restoration and brownfield reuse. Based on the results of quantitative analysis, this paper reviews the main research theories, methods, and technologies of ecological restoration and brownfield reuse at home and abroad, as well as response strategies in different regions and future prospects under challenges. Among the top 10 disciplines in terms of disciplinary contribution, the discipline with the highest relevance in the research articles of CNKI is “Environmental Science and Technology”, accounting for approximately 47.24%. The discipline with the highest relevance in the research articles of WOS is “Building Science and Engineering”, accounting for approximately 61.21%. In terms of research theories and methods, emphasis is placed on the application of ecological engineering, landscape ecology, land economics, and sustainable development methods. At the same time, adaptive management methods are emphasized, aiming to achieve a balance between ecological protection and urban development. In terms of response strategies for different regions, the main strategies for ecological restoration and brownfield reuse are proposed from five main aspects: reducing soil erosion and controlling water pollution, restoring ecological communities and enhancing biodiversity, landscape reshaping and spatial transformation, tourism development, and leisure space design. Based on the current challenges in technology, law, funding, management, and society, research prospects for strengthening interdisciplinary integration, digital drive, interdisciplinary collaboration, and multi-party cooperation in the future are proposed. It can be seen that research in this field is no longer just a simple ecological issue, but a comprehensive social problem. Full article

Urban voids, such as vacant lots, brownfields, fallow land, wasteland, and the spaces between buildings, have the potential to serve as habitats for a diverse range of plants. However, their value for plant conservation remains understudied because of their informal and neglected nature. The aim of this systematic review is to consider the potential for urban voids to contribute to urban plant biodiversity. A total of 55 studies from 14 countries were analysed for geographical trends, factors influencing plant biodiversity, research methods, and relevant environmental parameters. The results of this study show that the factors influencing the plant diversity of urban voids can be divided into three main categories: biophysical, temporal, and landscape factors. Biophysical factors, such as size, age, soil, and vegetation structure, as well as temporal factors, including site management and human interventions, are the most important at the site-level scale. In contrast, landscape factors, such as the location and distance from other green spaces, are more dominant at the larger urban scale. The review has identified a significant limitation in the available literature, with relatively few studies examining the influence of urban voids’ shape, ownership, and microclimate on biodiversity. With respect to research methods, the results suggest a recent increase in the use of GIS-based and remote sensing techniques to investigate the plant diversity of urban voids. The findings discussed in this paper indicate the need for further research to comprehensively understand the factors that promote urban vegetation diversity in urban voids. Full article

The article presents an overall picture, covering both the chronology and various aspects (urban planning, organizational, financial, and technical) of this project and assesses its current state. The text also explores the project’s specifics and outlines the perspective for further research. The site of the former Fornebu Airport is located on a peninsula approximately 7 km from the center of Oslo. Its transformation began in the late 1990s, coinciding with the relocation of air traffic to the new Gardermoen Airport. Since then, the development process has undergone several phases and is now highly advanced. The development features a clear functional and spatial structure (containing housing as well as workplaces and public facilities), resulting from deliberate design decisions and ongoing adjustments. There has also been strong progress in terms of sustainability, especially in technical solutions. The implementation of this project relies significantly on a few private investors who align with the frameworks established by public entities, particularly the urban regulations introduced by the local Baerum municipality. Although the project does not incorporate revolutionary technical or organizational solutions, it serves as an interesting example of current trends in urban planning. Full article

Urban sprawl and brownfields are recognized as the main challenges for sustainable land use in post-industrial cities. Using a mixed methodology (GIS and interviews), this research aimed to examine the relationship between the redevelopment process of former Soviet military brownfields and urban sprawl in Hungary. Research findings highlighted the overall importance of the regeneration of military brownfields in urban development; however, not all the assessed projects appeared to be beneficial to densification objectives. We could identify two groups of brownfields lying within the boundaries of the compact city and outside the boundaries. The regeneration of military brownfields embedded in the built-up areas of cities can contribute to densification objectives and attract new functions and residents to abandoned areas. They can also support wider regeneration strategies of local governments, especially in run-down neighborhoods. However, a large number of military brownfields are located on the peripheries of metropolitan areas. The regeneration of such sites, as demonstrated by the case studies, can play a catalyst role in urban sprawl. Therefore, it is important to emphasize that local municipalities should make a careful strategic selection of military brownfield sites for redevelopment based upon their characteristics and location, as supported by the typology presented in this study, together with locally perceived socio-economic and risk factors. Vegetation cover in urban and peri-urban areas is threatened by urban sprawl, through habitat fragmentation, loss of green space, biodiversity reduction, and the urban heat island effect intensifying. The intrusion of cities into natural landscapes reduces vital ecosystem services provided by vegetation. Hence, sustainable and integrated urban planning practices are required. Our study aims to investigate the dynamics of the urban and peri-urban fabric by exploring the relationship between the green fabric distribution and recent trends in urban expansion, focusing specifically on the peri-urban areas of Iași Municipality, Romania. We designed a mixed-method approach combining a multivariate analysis of four critical indicators (vegetation cover, built-up space, land surface temperature, and population density), emerging hot-spots, and space-time cubes in a GIS environment to achieve our research aims. Our results demonstrate that uncontrolled urban expansion has manifested in diverse patterns, impacting territories next to road transport networks and with construction-suitable topography. Concurrently, the development of green spaces prevails in forests and unexpected locations such as brownfields, railway corridors, and old industrial zones, through the growth of urban greenery. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of how urban sprawl impacts the environment and how different land types are prone to this transformation, creating a path towards sustainability, resilience, and equitable development. Brownfields, abandoned or underutilized lands having the potential for contamination due to industrial activities, pose health risks to nearby residents and raise environmental justice (EJ) concerns. This study examines the relationship between brownfield distribution and socioeconomic factors in New Jersey, a state with over 700 brownfield sites, using correlation, spatial autoregression, and instrumental variable regression methods. Results show that brownfields are associated with higher combined EJ stressors, indicating compounding environmental pollution and health risks in affected areas. Brownfields are disproportionately correlated with lower household income, higher rates of uninsured individuals, lower educational attainment, and a greater percentage of people of color. When accounting for spatial autocorrelation, relationships between income, education, and brownfield distributions are reduced, reflecting New Jersey’s historical, environmental, and social contexts. Overall, the presence of people of color maintains the strongest association with brownfield distribution. This study highlights ongoing EJ challenges faced by disadvantaged groups and emphasizes the need for targeted mitigation measures to enhance sustainability and equity. New Jersey serves as a critical case study given its ethnic diversity, growing urban population, and status as the state with the highest population density in the United States, illustrating broader trends of disproportionate exposure to environmental pollution among marginalized communities.
