Urban Agriculture for Post-Disaster Food Security: Quantifying the Contributions of Community Gardens

Wellington, New Zealand, is highly vulnerable to disaster-induced food security crises due to its geography and geological characteristics, which can disrupt transportation and isolate the city following disasters. Urban agriculture (UA) has been proposed as a potential alternative food source for post-disaster scenarios. This study examined the potential of urban agriculture for enhancing post-disaster food security by calculating vegetable self-sufficiency rates. Specifically, it evaluated the capacity of current Wellington’s community gardens to meet post-disaster vegetable demand in terms of both weight and nutrient content. Data collection employed mixed methods with questionnaires, on-site observations and mapping, and collecting high-resolution aerial imagery. Garden yields were estimated using self-reported data supported by literature benchmarks, while cultivated areas were quantified through on-site mapping and aerial imagery analysis. Six post-disaster food demand scenarios were used based on different target populations to develop an understanding of the range of potential produce yields. Weight-based results show that community gardens currently supply only 0.42% of the vegetable demand for residents living within a five-minute walk. This rate increased to 2.07% when specifically targeting only vulnerable populations, and up to 10.41% when focusing on gardeners’ own households. However, at the city-wide level, the current capacity of community gardens to provide enough produce to feed people remained limited. Nutrient-based self-sufficiency was lower than weight-based results; however, nutrient intake is particularly critical for vulnerable populations after disasters, underscoring the greater challenge of ensuring adequate nutrition through current urban food production. Beyond self-sufficiency, this study also addressed the role of UA in promoting food diversity and acceptability, as well as its social and psychological benefits based on the questionnaires and on-site observations. The findings indicate that community gardens contribute meaningfully to post-disaster food security for gardeners and nearby residents, particularly for vulnerable groups with elevated nutritional needs. Despite the current limited capacity of community gardens to provide enough produce to feed residents, findings suggest that Wellington could enhance post-disaster food self-reliance by diversifying UA types and optimizing land-use to increase food production during and after a disaster. Realizing this potential will require strategic interventions, including supportive policies, a conducive social environment, and diversification—such as the including private yards—all aimed at improving food access, availability, and nutritional quality during crises. The primary limitation of this study is the lack of comprehensive data on urban agriculture in Wellington and the wider New Zealand context. Addressing this data gap should be a key focus for future research to enable more robust assessments and evidence-based planning. Full article

Understanding changes in land use structures under multiple scenarios and their impacts on carbon storage is essential for revealing the evolution of regional development patterns and the underlying mechanisms of carbon cycle dynamics. This study adopted an integrated PLUS-InVEST modeling framework to analyze and predict changes in carbon storage in the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration (CPUA) under different scenarios for the years 2030 and 2060. The results showed the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the areas of forest land, water bodies, and construction land expanded, while the areas of cropland, grassland, and barren land decreased. Over this 20-year period, carbon storage showed a declining trend, decreasing from 2390.07 × 106 t in 2000 to 2372.19 × 106 t in 2020. (2) In both 2030 and 2060, cropland remained the primary land use type in the CPUA. Overall, carbon storage in the CPUA was higher in the southwestern area and decreased in the central and eastern parts, which was mainly related to the land use distribution pattern in the CPUA. (3) Carbon storage under the EP (ecological protection) and CP (cropland protection) scenarios was significantly higher than under the other two scenarios, and in 2030, carbon storage under the CP and EP scenarios exceeded that in 2020, while the UD (urban development) scenario had the lowest total carbon storage. This indicated that the expansion of construction land was detrimental to carbon storage enhancement, underscoring the importance of implementing ecological protection strategies. In summary, the results of this study quantitatively reflected the changes in carbon storage in the CPUA under different future development scenarios, providing a reference for formulating regional development strategies. The typical ranges available for electric vehicles (EVs) may be considered by users to be inadequate when compared to long, real-life trips, and charging operations may need to be planned along journeys. To evaluate the compatibility between vehicle features and charging options for realistic journeys performed by car, a simulation approach is proposed here, using travel data collected from real vehicles to obtain trip chains for multiple consecutive days. Car travel activities, including stops with the option of charging, were simulated by applying an agent-based approach. Charging operations can be integrated into trip chains for user activities, assuming that they remain unchanged in the event that vehicles switch to electric. The energy consumption of the analyzed trips, disaggregated by vehicle type, was estimated using the average travel speed, which is useful for capturing the main route features (ranging from urban to motorways). Data were recorded for approximately 25,000 vehicles in the Turin Metropolitan Area for six consecutive days. Market segmentation of the vehicles was introduced to take into consideration different energy consumption rates and charging times, given that the electric power, battery size, and consumption rate can be related to the vehicle category. Charging activities carried out using public infrastructure during idle time between consecutive trips, as well as those carried out at home or work, were identified in order to model different needs. Carbon (C) sequestration and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) accumulation in urban forest green spaces are significant for global climate regulation and alleviating nutrient pollution. However, the effects of management and conservation practices across different urban forest vegetation types on soil C, N, and P contents and stoichiometric ratios remain largely unexplored. We selected forest soils from Guangzhou, a major Metropolis in China, as our study area. Soil samples were collected from two urban secondary forests that naturally regenerated after disturbance (108 samples) and six urban forest parks primarily composed of artificially planted woody plant communities (72 samples). We employed mixed linear models and variance partitioning to analyze and compare soil C, N, and P contents and their stoichiometry and its main driving factors beneath suburban forests and urban park vegetation. These results exhibited that soil pH and bulk density in urban parks were higher than those in suburban forests, whereas soil water content, maximum storage capacity, and capillary porosity were higher in urban forests than in urban parks. Soil C, N, and P contents and their stoichiometry (except for N:P ratio) were significantly higher in suburban forests than in urban parks. Multiple analyzes showed that soil pH had the most pronounced negative influence on soil C, N, C:N, C:P, and N:P, but the strongest positive influence on soil P in urban parks. Soil water content had the strongest positive effect on soil C, N, P, C:N, and C:P, while soil N:P was primarily influenced by the positive effect of soil non-capillary porosity in suburban forests. Overall, our study emphasizes that suburban forests outperform urban parks in terms of carbon and nutrient accumulation, and urban green space management should focus particularly on the impact of soil pH and moisture content on soil C, N, and P contents and their stoichiometry. Assessing Urban Park Accessibility via Population Projections: Planning for Green Equity in Shanghai

Rapid urbanization and demographic shifts present significant challenges to spatial justice in green space provision. Traditional static assessments have become increasingly inadequate for guiding park planning, which now requires a dynamic, future-oriented analytical approach. To address this gap, this study incorporates population dynamics into urban park planning by developing a dynamic evaluation framework for park accessibility. Building on the Gaussian-based two-step floating catchment area (Ga2SFCA) method, we propose the human-population-projection-Ga2SFCA (HPP-Ga2SFCA) model, which integrates population forecasts to assess park service efficiency under future demographic pressures. Using neighborhood-committee-level census data from 2000 to 2020 and detailed park spatial data, we identified five types of population change and forecast demographic distributions for both short- and long-term scenarios. Our findings indicate population decline in the urban core and outer suburbs, with growth concentrated in the transitional inner-suburban zones. Long-term projections suggest that 66% of communities will experience population growth, whereas short-term forecasts indicate a decline in 52%. Static models overestimate park accessibility by approximately 40%. In contrast, our dynamic model reveals that accessibility is overestimated in 71% and underestimated in 7% of the city, highlighting a potential mismatch between future population demand and current park supply. This study offers a forward-looking planning framework that enhances the responsiveness of park systems to demographic change and supports the development of more equitable, adaptive green space strategies. Urban parks play an essential role in mitigating the urban heat island (UHI) effect driven by urbanization. A rigorous understanding of the cooling effects of urban parks can support urban planning efforts aimed at mitigating the UHI effect and enhancing urban sustainability. However, previous research has primarily focused on the maximum cooling impact, often overlooking the accumulative effects arising from spatial continuity. The present study fills this gap by investigating 74 urban parks located in the central area of Jinan and constructing a comprehensive cooling evaluation framework through two dimensions: maximum impact (Park Cooling Area, PCA; Park Cooling Efficiency, PCE) and cumulative impact (Park Cooling Intensity, PCI; Park Cooling Gradient, PCG). We further systematically examined the influence of park attributes and the surrounding urban structures on these metrics. The findings indicate that urban parks, as a whole, significantly contribute to lowering the ambient temperatures in their vicinity: 62.3% are located in surface temperature cold spots, reducing ambient temperatures by up to 7.77 °C. However, cooling intensity, range, and efficiency vary significantly across parks, with an average PCI of 0.0280, PCG of 0.99 °C, PCA of 46.00 ha, and PCE of 5.34. For maximum impact, PCA is jointly determined by park area, boundary length, and shape complexity, while smaller parks generally exhibit higher PCE—reflecting diminished cooling efficiency at excessive scales. For cumulative impact, building density and spatial enclosure degree surrounding parks critically regulate PCI and PCG by influencing cool-air aggregation and diffusion. Based on these findings, this study classified urban parks according to their cooling characteristics, clarified the functional differences among different park types, and proposed targeted recommendations. The rapid urbanization process has accelerated the degradation of ecosystem services (ESs) in peri-urban rural areas of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), leading to increasing landscape ecological risks (LERs). Establishing a scientifically grounded landscape ecological risk assessment (LERA) system and corresponding control strategies is therefore imperative. Using rural areas of Jiangning District, Nanjing as a case study, this research proposes an optimized dual-dimensional coupling assessment framework that integrates ecosystem service value (ESV) and ecological risk probability. The spatiotemporal evolution of LER in 2000, 2010, and 2020 and its key driving factors were further studied by using spatial autocorrelation analysis and geodetector methods. The results show the following: (1) From 2000 to 2020, cultivated land remained dominant, but its proportion decreased by 10.87%, while construction land increased by 26.52%, with minimal changes in other land use types. (2) The total ESV increased by CNY 1.67 × 109, with regulating services accounting for over 82%, among which water bodies contributed the most. (3) LER showed an overall increasing trend, with medium- to highest-risk areas expanding by 55.37%, lowest-risk areas increasing by 10.10%, and lower-risk areas decreasing by 65.48%. (4) Key driving factors include landscape vulnerability, vegetation coverage, and ecological land connectivity, with the influence of distance to road becoming increasingly significant. This study reveals the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of LER in typical peri-urban villages. Based on the LERA results, combined with terrain features and ecological pressure intensity, the study area was divided into three ecological management zones: ecological conservation, ecological restoration, and ecological enhancement. Background/Objectives: Urban green space has been increasingly recognized as a determinant of maternal and child health. This study investigated the association between prenatal exposure to different types of green space and the risk of congenital anomalies in South Korea. Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Service (N = 142,422). Green space exposure was measured at the area level and categorized into grassland and forest; statistical analysis was performed using generalized estimating equations and generalized additive models to analyze the associations. Additionally, subgroup and sensitivity analyses were performed. Results: GEE analysis showed that a 10% increase in the proportion of grassland in a residential district was associated with a reduced risk of nervous system (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.77, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.63–0.94) and genitourinary system anomalies (aOR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.71–0.97). The subgroup analysis results showed significance only for male infants, but the difference between the sexes was not significant. In the quartile-based analysis, we found a slightly significant p-value for trend for the effect of forests on digestive system anomalies, but the trend was toward increasing risk. In a sensitivity analysis with different exposure classifications, the overall and nervous system anomalies in built green space showed that the risk decreased as green space increased compared to that in the lowest quartile. Conclusions: Our results highlight the importance of spatial environmental factors during pregnancy and suggest that different types of green spaces differentially impact the offspring’s early health outcomes. This study suggests the need for built environment planning as part of preventive maternal and child health strategies. Full article

The landscapes of China’s multi-ethnic areas are rich in natural and cultural value, but they are threatened by homogenization and urbanization. This study aims to establish a method for identifying and classifying the landscape characters in China’s multi-ethnic areas to support the protection and sustainable development of the landscape in these areas. Taking the Miao Frontier Corridor as an example, the study optimized a parameterization method of landscape character assessment (LCA), integrated relevant cultural and natural elements, and used the K-means clustering algorithm to determine the landscape character types and regions of the Miao Frontier Corridor. The results show that (1) the natural conditions, ethnic exchanges, and historical institutions of the Miao Frontier Corridor have had a significant impact on its overall landscape; and (2) using ethnic group culture as a cultural element in LCA helps to reveal the unique cultural value of areas with different landscape characters. This study expands the LCA framework and applies it to multi-ethnic areas in China, thereby establishing a database that can serve as the basis for cross-regional landscape protection, management, and development planning in these areas. The research methods can be widely used in other multi-ethnic areas in China. Full article

Urban air pollution remains a significant environmental and public health issue, especially in European coastal cities such as Klaipėda. However, there is still a lack of local-scale knowledge on how land use structure influences pollutant distribution, highlighting the need to address this gap. This study addresses this by examining the spatial distribution of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations in Klaipėda’s seaport city and several inland and coastal resort towns in Lithuania. The research specifically asks how different land cover types and demographic factors affect NO2 variability and population exposure risk. Data were collected using passive sampling methods and analyzed within a GIS environment. The results revealed clear air quality differences between industrial/port zones and greener resort areas, confirmed by statistically significant associations between land cover types and pollutant levels. Based on these findings, a Land Use Pollution Pressure index (LUPP) and its population-weighted variant (PLUPP) were developed to capture demographic sensitivity. These indices provide a practical decision-support tool for sustainable urban planning, enabling the assessment of pollution risks and the forecasting of air quality changes under different land use scenarios, while contributing to local climate adaptation and urban environmental governance. Small towns in mountainous regions face significant challenges in formulating effective landscape zoning strategies due to pronounced landscape fragmentation, which is driven by both the dominance of large-scale forest resources and the lack of coordination between administrative planning departments. To tackle this problem, this study focused on Yuqian, a quintessential small mountainous town in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The town’s layout was divided into a grid network measuring 70 m × 70 m. A two-step cluster process was employed using ArcGIS and SPSS software to analyze five landscape variables: altitude, slope, land use, heritage density, and visual visibility. Further, eCognition software’s semi-automated segmentation technique, complemented by manual adjustments, helped delineate landscape character types and areas. The overlay analysis integrated these areas with administrative village units, identifying four landscape character types across 35 character areas, which were recategorized into four planning and management zones: urban comprehensive service areas, agricultural and cultural tourism development areas, industrial development growth areas, and mountain forest ecological conservation areas. This result optimizes the current zoning types. These zones closely match governmental sustainable development zoning requirements. Based on these findings, we propose integrated landscape management and conservation strategies, including the cautious expansion of urban areas, leveraging agricultural and cultural tourism, ensuring industrial activities do not impact the natural and village environment adversely, and prioritizing ecological conservation in sensitive areas. This approach integrates spatial and administrative dimensions to enhance landscape connectivity and resource sustainability, providing key guidance for small town development in mountainous regions with unique environmental and cultural contexts. Traditional methods often rely on a fixed distance threshold (bandwidth) to define the scale effect, which can lead to scale sensitivity and discontinuity results. To address these limitations, this study introduces the Fuzzy Geographically Weighted Colocation Quotient (FGWCLQ) method. By integrating fuzzy theory, FGWCLQ replaces binary distance cutoffs with continuous membership functions, providing a more flexible and stable approach to spatial association mining. Using Point of Interest (POI) data from the Beijing urban area, FGWCLQ was applied to explore both intra- and inter-category spatial association patterns among star hotels, transportation facilities, and tourist attractions at different fuzzy neighborhoods. The results indicate that FGWCLQ can reliably discover global prevalent spatial associations among diverse facility types and visualize the spatial heterogeneity at various spatial scales. Compared to the deterministic GWCLQ method, FGWCLQ delivers more stable and robust results across varying spatial scales and generates more continuous association surfaces, which enable clear visualization of hierarchical clustering. Empirical findings provide valuable insights for optimizing the location of star hotels and supporting decision-making in urban planning. The method is available as an open-source Matlab package, providing a practical tool for diverse spatial association investigations. Full article

Integrating Urban Factors as Predictors of Last-Mile Demand Patterns: A Spatial Analysis in Thessaloniki

While the explosive growth in e-commerce stresses urban logistics systems, city planners lack of fine-grained data in order to anticipate and manage the resulting freight flows. Using a three-stage analytical approach combining descriptive zonal statistics, hotspot analysis and different regression modeling from univariate to geographically weighted regression, this study integrates one year of parcel deliveries from a leading courier with open spatial layers of land-use zoning, census population, mobile-signal activity and household income to model last-mile demand across different land use types. A baseline linear regression shows that residential population alone accounts for roughly 30% of the variance in annual parcel volumes (2.5–3.0 deliveries per resident) while adding daytime workforce and income increases the prediction accuracy to 39%. In a similar approach where coefficients vary geographically with Geographically Weighted Regression to capture the local heterogeneity achieves a significant raise of the overall R2 to 0.54 and surpassing 0.70 in residential and institutional districts. Hot-spot analysis reveals a highly fragmented pattern where fewer than 5% of blocks generate more than 8.5% of all deliveries with no apparent correlation to the broaden land-use classes. Commercial and administrative areas exhibit the greatest intensity (1149 deliveries per ha) yet remain the hardest to explain (global R2 = 0.21) underscoring the importance of additional variables such as retail mix, street-network design and tourism flows. Through this approach, the calibrated models can be used to predict city-wide last-mile demand using only public inputs and offers a transferable, privacy-preserving template for evidence-based freight planning. By pinpointing the location and the land uses where demand concentrates, it supports targeted interventions such as micro-depots, locker allocation and dynamic curb-space management towards more sustainable and resilient urban-logistics networks. Zoning policies play a critical role in shaping the geography of urban and suburban development in the United States. Using data from the National Zoning and Land-Use Database and tract-level census data from 42 Metropolitan Statistical Areas, we classify metros into four zoning regime types based on the relative restrictiveness of urban and suburban land-use policies and compare trends in population growth and neighborhood change across these regimes. Our findings show that suburban areas have outpaced urban cores in population growth across all zoning configurations, with the most pronounced growth occurring in metros where restrictive urban zoning coexists with permissive suburban regulation. This growth is disproportionately concentrated in affluent suburban neighborhoods, suggesting a spatial sorting of access to resources and amenities. We also find that urban–suburban gentrification gaps are the smallest in these asymmetrical zoning regimes, suggesting that permissive suburban land use may facilitate spillover effects from constrained cores. These findings suggest that zoning asymmetries shape not only the geography of growth but also the spatial dynamics of gentrification. We argue for a metropolitan perspective on land-use governance to better understand the interconnected nature of suburbanization and the spatial expansion of gentrification. Full article

Deep Learning-Based Rooftop PV Detection and Techno Economic Feasibility for Sustainable Urban Energy Planning

Accurate estimation of available rooftop areas for PV power generation at the city scale is critical for sustainable energy planning and policy development. In this study, using publicly available high-resolution satellite imagery, rooftop solar energy potential in urban, rural, and industrial areas is estimated using deep learning models. In order to identify roof areas, high-resolution open-source images were manually labeled, and the training dataset was trained with DeepLabv3+ architecture. The developed model performed roof area detection with high accuracy. Model outputs are integrated with a user-friendly interface for economic analysis such as cost, profitability, and amortization period. This interface automatically detects roof regions in the bird’s-eye -view images uploaded by users, calculates the total roof area, and classifies according to the potential of the area. The system, which is applied in 81 provinces of Turkey, provides sustainable energy projections such as PV installed capacity, installation cost, annual energy production, energy sales revenue, and amortization period depending on the panel type and region selection. This integrated system consists of a deep learning model that can extract the rooftop area with high accuracy and a user interface that automatically calculates all parameters related to PV installation for energy users. The results show that the DeepLabv3+ architecture and the Adam optimization algorithm provide superior performance in roof area estimation with accuracy between 67.21% and 99.27% and loss rates between 0.6% and 0.025%. Tests on 100 different regions yielded a maximum roof estimation accuracy IoU of 84.84% and an average of 77.11%. In the economic analysis, the amortization period reaches the lowest value of 4.5 years in high-density roof regions where polycrystalline panels are used, while this period increases up to 7.8 years for thin-film panels. In conclusion, this study presents an interactive user interface integrated with a deep learning model capable of high-accuracy rooftop area detection, enabling the assessment of sustainable PV energy potential at the city scale and easy economic analysis. This approach is a valuable tool for planning and decision support systems in the integration of renewable energy sources. Full article
