Precise odor source localization in turbulent and sparse environments plays a vital role in enabling robotic systems for hazardous chemical monitoring and effective disaster response. To address this, we propose Cooperative Gravitational-Rényi Infotaxis (CGRInfotaxis), a distributed decision-optimization framework that combines multi-agent collaboration with hybrid cognitive strategy to improve search efficiency and robustness. The method integrates a gravitational potential field for rapid source convergence and Rényi divergence-based probabilistic exploration to handle sparse detections, dynamically balanced via a regulation factor. Particle filtering optimizes posterior probability estimation to autonomously refine search areas while preserving computational efficiency, alongside a distributed interactive-optimization mechanism for real-time decision updates through agent cooperation. The algorithm’s performance is evaluated in scenarios with fixed and randomized odor source locations, as well as with varying numbers of agents. Results demonstrate that CGRInfotaxis achieves a near-100% success rate with high consistency across diverse conditions, outperforming existing methods in stability and adaptability. Increasing the number of agents further enhances search efficiency without compromising reliability. These findings suggest that CGRInfotaxis significantly advances multi-agent odor source localization in turbulent, sparse environments, offering practical utility for real-world applications. Machine learning modeling is a valuable tool for gap-filling or prediction, and its performance is typically evaluated using standard metrics. To enable more precise assessments for time-series data, this study emphasizes the importance of considering time-series consistency, which can be evaluated through amplitude—specifically, the interquartile range and the lower bound of the band in gap-filled time series. To test this hypothesis, a gap-filling technique was applied using long-term (~6 years) high-frequency flux and meteorological data collected at four different levels (1.5, 60, 140, and 300 m above sea level) on a ~300 m tall flux tower. This study focused on turbulent kinetic energy among several variables, which is important for estimating sensible and latent heat fluxes and net ecosystem exchange. Five ensemble machine learning algorithms were selected and trained on three different datasets. Among several modeling scenarios, the stacking model with a dataset combined with derivative data produced the best metrics for predicting turbulent kinetic energy. Although the metrics before and after gap-filling reported fewer differences among the scenarios, large distortions were found in the consistency of the time series in terms of amplitude. These findings underscore the importance of evaluating time-series consistency alongside traditional metrics, not only to accurately assess modeling performance but also to ensure reliability in downstream applications such as forecasting, climate modeling, and energy estimation. The placement of hydraulic elements in existing pool-type fishways to make them more suitable for Cyprinid fish is an issue of increasing interest in fishway research. Hydrodynamic characteristics and fish behavior at the representative pool of the fishway with bottom orifices and notches were assessed at the Dagdelen hydropower plant in the Ceyhan River Basin, Türkiye. Three-dimensional velocity measurements were taken in the pool of the fishway using an Acoustic Doppler velocimeter. The measurements were taken with and without a brush block at two different vertical distances from the bottom, which were below and above the level of bristles tips. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was conducted for the studied fishway. The numerical model utilized Large Eddy Simulation (LES) combined with the Darcy–Forchheimer law, wherein brush blocks were represented as homogenous porous media. Our results revealed that the relative submergence of bristles in the brush block plays a very important role in velocity and Reynolds shear stress (RSS) distributions. After the placement of the submerged brush block, flow velocity and the lateral RSS component were reduced, and a resting area was created behind the brush block below the bristles’ tips. Fish movements in the pool were recorded by underwater cameras under real-time operation conditions. The heatmap analysis, which is a 2-dimensional fish spatial presence visualization technique for a specific time period, showed that Capoeta damascina avoided the areas with high turbulent fluctuations during the tests, and 61.5% of the fish presence intensity was found to be in the low Reynolds shear regions in the pool. This provides a clear case for the real-world ecological benefits of retrofitting existing pool-weir fishways with such flexible hydraulic elements. Full article

Atmospheric and oceanic turbulence can severely degrade the orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode purity of vortex beams in cross-media optical links. Here, we propose a hybrid correction framework that fuses multiscale phase-screen modeling with a lightweight U-Net predictor for phase-distortion—driven solely by measured optical intensity—and augments it with a feed-forward, Gaussian-reference subtraction scheme for iterative compensation. In our experiments, this approach boosts the l = 3 mode purity from 38.4% to 98.1%. Compared to the Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm, the Gaussian-reference feed-forward method achieves far lower computational complexity and greater robustness, making real-time phase recovery feasible for OAM-based communications over heterogeneous channels. The present paper reports for the first time the comparison of radar-derived eddy dissipation rate (EDR) and vertical velocity with measurements from six aircraft for an intense squall line crossing Hong Kong. The study objectives are three-fold: (i) to characterise the structural dynamics of the intense squall line; (ii) to identify the dynamical change in EDR and vertical velocity during its eastward propagation across Hong Kong with a view to gaining insight into the intensity change of the squall line and the severity of its impact on aircraft flying near it; (iii) to carry out quantitative comparison of EDR and vertical velocity derived from remote sensing instruments, i.e., weather radars and in situ measurements from aircraft, so that the quality of the former dataset can be evaluated by the latter. During the passage of the squall line and taking reference of the radar reflectivity, vertical circulation and the subsiding flow at the rear, it appeared to be weakening in crossing over Hong Kong, possibly due to land friction by terrain and urban morphology. This is also consistent with the maximum gusts recorded by the dense network of ground-based anemometers in Hong Kong. However, from the EDR and the vertical velocity of the aircraft, the weakening trend was not very apparent, and rather severe turbulence was still recorded by the aircraft flying through the squall line into the region with stratiform precipitation when the latter reached the eastern coast of Hong Kong. In general, the radar-based and the aircraft-based EDRs are consistent with each other. The radar-retrieved maximum vertical velocity may be smaller in magnitude at times, possibly arising from the limited spatial and temporal resolutions of the aircraft data. The results of this paper could be a useful reference for the development of radar-based turbulence products for aviation applications. Full article

In crisis-stricken economies, leadership effectiveness increasingly hinges not on technical expertise alone but on emotional competence. While emotional intelligence (EI) has been widely acknowledged as a catalyst for effective leadership and employee outcomes, its role in volatile and resource-scarce contexts remains underexplored. This study addresses this critical gap by investigating the impact of five core EI dimensions, namely self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, on employee performance amid Lebanon’s ongoing multidimensional crisis. Drawing on Goleman’s EI framework and the Job Demands–Resources theory, the research employs a quantitative, cross-sectional design with data collected from 398 employees across sectors in Lebanon. Structural Equation Modeling revealed that all EI dimensions significantly and positively influenced employee performance, with self-regulation (β = 0.485) and empathy (β = 0.361) emerging as the most potent predictors. These findings underscore the value of emotionally intelligent leadership in fostering productivity, resilience, and team cohesion during organizational instability. This study contributes to the literature by contextualizing EI in an under-researched, crisis-affected setting, offering nuanced insights into which emotional competencies are most impactful during prolonged uncertainty. Practically, it positions EI as a strategic leadership asset for crisis management and sustainable human resource development in fragile economies. The results inform leadership training, policy design, and organizational strategies that aim to enhance employee performance through emotionally intelligent practices. Full article

Research on Startup Characteristics of Parallel Axial-Flow Pump Systems

This study takes four parallel axial-flow pumps (three in operation + one on standby) as the research object. Using a 1D–3D coupling method, it explores the flow characteristics of axial-flow pumps under different startup strategies during multi-pump parallel operation. Through comparative analysis, the following conclusions are drawn: when all three pumps start simultaneously, the internal pressure exceeds the rated head by 23.43%, and the reverse flow reaches 10.57% of the rated flow. When starting the pumps sequentially with 5 s intervals, the pressure can be reduced to 11.41% above the rated head, but the reverse flow increases to 13.87%. Further extending the startup interval to 15 s results in only minimal improvements compared to 5 s intervals: the maximum internal pressure and maximum reverse flow decrease by just 0.97% and 0.05%, respectively. When valve coordination is added to the 5 s sequential startup strategy (pre-opening the valve to 60% before pump startup), the pressure exceeds the rated head by 10.49%, and the reverse flow exceeds the rated flow by 6.04%. In this scenario, the high-pressure areas and high-turbulence zones on the blade back surfaces are significantly reduced, achieving optimal flow stability. Therefore, the parallel system startup should adopt a coordinated strategy combining moderate time intervals with 60% valve pre-opening. This approach can both avoid excessive pressure impact and effectively control reverse flow phenomena, providing an important basis for optimizing the startup of multi-pump parallel systems. The extended operation of high-speed railways has led to an increased incidence of tunnel lining defects, with falling debris posing a significant safety threat. Within tunnels, single-train passage and trains-crossing events constitute the most frequent operational scenarios, both generating extreme aerodynamic environments that alter debris trajectories from free fall. To systematically investigate the aerodynamic differences and underlying mechanisms governing falling debris behavior under these two distinct conditions, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model (debris–air–tunnel–train) was developed using an improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) turbulence model. Comparative analyses focused on the translational and rotational motions as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients of the debris in both single-train and trains-crossing scenarios. The mechanisms driving the changes in debris aerodynamic behavior are elucidated. Findings reveal that under single-train operation, falling debris travels a greater distance compared with trains-crossing conditions. Specifically, at train speeds ranging from 250–350 km/h, the average flight distances of falling debris in the X and Z directions under single-train conditions surpass those under trains crossing conditions by 10.3 and 5.5 times, respectively. At a train speed of 300 km/h, the impulse of CFx and CFz under single-train conditions is 8.6 and 4.5 times greater than under trains-crossing conditions, consequently leading to the observed reduction in flight distance. Under the conditions of trains crossing, the falling debris is situated between the two trains, and although the wind speed is low, the flow field exhibits instability. This is the primary factor contributing to the reduced flight distance of the falling debris. However, it also leads to more pronounced trajectory deviations and increased speed fluctuations under intersection conditions. The relative velocity (CRV) on the falling debris surface is diminished, resulting in smaller-scale vortex structures that are more numerous. Consequently, the aerodynamic load coefficient is reduced, while the fluctuation range experiences an increase. Full article

The multiscale interactive system composed of wind, leaves, and droplets serves as a critical dynamic unit in precision orchard spraying. Its coupling mechanisms fundamentally influence pesticide transport pathways, deposition patterns, and drift behavior within crop canopies, forming the foundational basis for achieving intelligent and site-specific spraying operations. This review systematically examines the synergistic dynamics across three hierarchical scales: Droplet–leaf surface wetting and adhesion at the microscale; leaf cluster motion responses at the mesoscale; and the modulation of airflow and spray plume diffusion by canopy architecture at the macroscale. Key variables affecting spray performance—such as wind speed and turbulence structure, leaf biomechanical properties, droplet size and electrostatic characteristics, and spatial canopy heterogeneity—are identified and analyzed. Furthermore, current advances in multiscale modeling approaches and their corresponding experimental validation techniques are critically evaluated, along with their practical boundaries of applicability. Results indicate that while substantial progress has been made at individual scales, significant bottlenecks remain in the integration of cross-scale models, real-time acquisition of critical parameters, and the establishment of high-fidelity experimental platforms. Future research should prioritize the development of unified coupling frameworks, the integration of physics-based and data-driven modeling strategies, and the deployment of multimodal sensing technologies for real-time intelligent spray decision-making. These efforts are expected to provide both theoretical foundations and technological support for advancing precision and intelligent orchard spraying systems. Full article

In this paper, the single-mode vortex beam is used to illuminate targets of different shapes, and the targets are recognized using machine learning algorithms based on the orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectral information of the echo signal. We innovatively utilize three neural networks—multilayer perceptron (MLP), convolutional neural network (CNN) and residual neural network (ResNet)—to train extensive echo OAM spectrum data. The trained models can rapidly and accurately classify the OAM spectrum data of different targets’ echo signals. The results show that the residual network (ResNet) performs best under all turbulence intensities and can achieve a high recognition rate when Cn2=1×1013 m2/3. In addition, even when the target size is η=0.3, the recognition rate of ResNet can reach 97%, while the robustness of MLP and CNN to the target size is lower; the recognition rates are 91.75% and 91%, respectively. However, although the recognition performance of CNN and MLP is slightly lower than that of ResNet, their training time is much lower than that of ResNet, which can achieve a good balance between recognition performance and training time cost. This research has a promising future in the fields of target recognition and intelligent navigation based on multi-dimensional information. Full article

Maintaining the required relative humidity values in the vehicle cabin is an important HVAC task, along with considerations related to the temperature, velocity, air pressure and noise. Deviation from the optimal values worsens the psycho-physiological state of the driver and affects the energy efficiency of the train. In this study, a model of liquid film formation on and removal from various cabin surfaces was constructed using the fundamental Navier–Stokes hydrodynamic equations. A special transport model based on the liquid vapor diffusion equation was used to simulate the air environment inside the cabin. The evaporation and condensation of surface films were simulated using the Euler film model, which directly considers liquid–gas and gas–liquid transitions. Numerical results were obtained using the RANS equations and a turbulence model by means of the finite volume method in Ansys CFD. Conjugate fields of temperature, velocity and moisture concentration were constructed for various time intervals, and the dependence values for the film thicknesses on various surfaces relative to time were determined. The verification was conducted in comparison with the experimental data, based on the protocol for measuring the microclimate indicators in workplaces, as applied to the train cabin: the average ranges encompassed temperature changes from 11% to 18%, and relative humidity ranges from 16% to 26%. Comparison with the results of other studies, without considering the phase transition and condensation, shows that, for the warm mode, the average air temperature in the cabin with condensation is 12.5% lower than without condensation, which is related to the process of liquid evaporation from the heated walls. The difference in temperature values for the model with and without condensation ranged from −12.5% to +4.9%. We demonstrate that, with an effective mode of removing condensate film from the window surface, including recirculation modes, the energy consumption of the climate control system improves significantly, but this requires a more accurate consideration of thermodynamic parameters and relative humidity. Thus, considering the moisture condensation model reveals that this variable can significantly affect other parameters of the microclimate in cabins: in particular, the temperature. This means that it should be considered in the numerical modeling, along with the basic heat transfer equations. Full article

This study investigates the flow dynamics and local scour around a Reef Cube® artificial reef deployed in Torbay, UK, using computational fluid dynamics. The flow is modelled using Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations with a k-ω SST turbulence model. A novel hydro-morphodynamic model employing the generalized internal boundary method in HELYX (OpenFOAM-based) is used to simulate scour development. Model performance was validated against experimental data for flow fields, bed shear stress, and local scour. Flow simulations across various scenarios demonstrated that parameters such as the orientation angle and arrangement of Reef Cubes significantly influence flow patterns, bed shear stress, and habitat suitability. The hydro-morphodynamic model was used to simulate scouring around a reef cube in the Torbay marine environment. Results indicate that typical tidal flow velocity flow in the region is barely sufficient to initiate sediment motion, whereas extreme flow events, represented by doubling the mean flow velocity, significantly accelerate scour development, producing holes up to ten times deeper. These findings underscore the importance of considering extreme flow conditions in scour analyses due to their potential impact on the stability and failure risk of AR projects. Full article

Driven by stringent emission regulations, advanced combustion modes utilizing turbulent jet ignition technology are pivotal for enhancing the performance of marine low-speed natural gas dual-fuel engines. This review focuses on three novel combustion modes, yielding key conclusions: (1) Compared to the conventional DJCDC mode, the TJCDC mode exhibits a significantly higher swirl ratio and turbulence kinetic energy in the main chamber during initial combustion. This promotes natural gas jet development and combustion acceleration, leading to shorter ignition delay, reduced combustion duration, and a combustion center (CA50) positioned closer to the Top Dead Center (TDC), alongside higher peak cylinder pressure and a faster early heat release rate. Energetically, while TJCDC incurs higher heat transfer losses, it benefits from lower exhaust energy and irreversible exergy loss, indicating greater potential for useful work extraction, albeit with slightly higher indicated specific NOx emissions. (2) In the high-compression ratio TJCPC mode, the Liquid Pressurized Natural Gas (LPNG) injection parameters critically impact performance. Delaying the start of injection (SOI) or extending the injection duration degrades premixing uniformity and increases unburned methane (CH4) slip, with the duration effects showing a load dependency. Optimizing both the injection timing and duration is, therefore, essential for emission control. (3) Increasing the excess air ratio delays the combustion phasing in TJCPC (longer ignition delay, extended combustion duration, and retarded CA50). However, this shift positions the heat release more optimally relative to the TDC, resulting in significantly improved indicated thermal efficiency. This work provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing high-efficiency, low-emission combustion strategies in marine dual-fuel engines. Full article

Three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations have been performed to investigate the complex flow features and stripping of fluid materials from a cylindrical water drop at the late-stage in a Shock Liquid Drop Interaction (SLDI) process when the drop’s downstream end experiences compression after it is impacted by a supersonic shock wave (Ma = 1.47). The drop trajectory/breakup has been simulated using a Lagrangian model and the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach has been employed for simulating the ambient airflow. The Kelvin–Helmholtz Rayleigh–Taylor (KHRT) breakup model has been used to capture the liquid drop fragmentation process and a coupled level-set volume of fluid (CLSVOF) method has been applied to investigate the topological transformations at the air/water interface. The predicted changes of the drop length/width/area with time have been compared against experimental measurements, and a very good agreement has been obtained. The complex flow features and the qualitative characteristics of the material stripping process in the compression phase, as well as disintegration and flattening of the drop are analyzed via comprehensive flow visualization. Characteristics of the drop distortion and fragmentation in the stripping breakup mode, and the development of turbulence at the later stage of the shock drop interaction process are also examined. Finally, this study investigated the effect of increasing Ma on the breakup of a water drop by shear stripping. The results show that the shed fluid materials and micro-drops are spread over a narrower distribution as Ma increases. It illustrates that the flattened area bounded by the downstream separation points experienced less compression, and the liquid sheet suffered a slower growth. Full article

Turbulent diffusion plays a critical role in atmospheric pollutant dispersion, particularly in complex environments such as urban areas. This study proposes a novel theoretical approach to enhance the calculation of the turbulent diffusion coefficient in pollutant dispersion models. We propose a new expression for the turbulent diffusion coefficient (KC), which incorporates both hydrodynamic and turbulence-related time scales. This formulation links the turbulent diffusion coefficient to pollutant travel time and turbulence intensity, offering more accurate predictions of pollutant concentration distributions. By addressing the limitations of existing empirical models, this approach improves the parameterization of turbulence and reduces uncertainties in predicting maximum individual exposure under various atmospheric conditions. The study presents a theoretical model designed to advance the current understanding of atmospheric dispersion modeling. Experimental validation, while recommended, is beyond the scope of this work and is suggested as a direction for future empirical research to confirm the practical utility of the model. This theoretical formulation could be integrated into urban air quality management frameworks, providing improved estimations of pollutant peaks in complex environments. Full article
