This article provides a critical review of the current design and research challenges in contemporary timber architecture. Conducted from the perspective of a designer-researcher, the review focuses on the role of wood as a material at the intersection of environmental performance, cultural meaning, and spatial practice. The study adopts a conceptual, problem-oriented approach, eschewing the conventional systematic aggregation of existing data. The objective of this study is to identify, interpret and categorise the key issues that are shaping the evolving discourse on timber architecture. The analysis is based on peer-reviewed literature published between 2020 and 2025, sourced from the Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection databases. Fifteen thematic challenges have been identified and classified according to their recognition level in academic and design contexts. The subjects under discussion include well-established topics, such as life cycle assessment and carbon storage, as well as less commonly explored areas, such as symbolic durability, social acceptance, traceability, and the upcycling of low-grade wood. The review under consideration places significant emphasis on the importance of integrating technical, cultural, and perceptual dimensions when evaluating timber architecture. The article proposes an interpretive framework combining design thinking and transdisciplinary insights. This framework aims to bridge disciplinary gaps and provide a coherent structure for understanding the complexity of timber-related challenges. The framework under discussion here encourages a broader understanding of wood as not only a sustainable building material but also a vehicle for systemic transformation in architectural culture and practice. The study’s insights may support designers, educators, and policymakers in identifying strategic priorities for the development of future-proof timber-based design practices. Full article

Urban sustainability challenges demand integrated frameworks capable of addressing the dynamic, non-linear nature of cities. This study explores how the principles of the circular economy and complexity theory intersect to support systemic transformation in sustainable urban planning. Through a systematic literature review of 71 peer-reviewed articles published between 2015 and 2025, we analyze conceptual, methodological, and practical articulations across multiple thematic axes, including circular governance, urban metabolism, regenerative design, adaptive planning, digital integration, and environmental justice. Bibliometric and content analyses were conducted using Scopus metadata, VOSviewer for thematic clustering, and the StArt software (Version 3.4) to structure article selection. The findings reveal that circular economy provides practical tools for resource efficiency and regeneration, while complexity theory offers an adaptive framework to navigate uncertainty, emergent behaviors, and feedback dynamics. The synthesis suggests that their integration enables a more holistic and resilient approach to urban transformation. However, gaps remain in social inclusivity, long-term assessment, and the operationalization of complexity-informed planning. This study contributes to advancing a transdisciplinary agenda for circular and adaptive urban futures, offering insights for scholars, planners, and policymakers aiming to reconfigure cities within planetary boundaries. This article examines training itineraries for early childhood education professionals in Portugal, focusing on promoting social and human development through music and the arts for infants. The training models discussed are categorized as short-term and long-term, encompassing both theory and practice through a transdisciplinary approach. Based on initiatives promoted by the Companhia de Música Teatral (CMT) and the Education and Human Development Group of the Centre for the Study of Sociology and Musical Aesthetics (CESEM) at NOVA University Lisbon, the article highlights projects such as: (i) Opus Tutti and GermInArte, developed between 2011 and 2018; (ii) the Postgraduate Course Music in Childhood: Intervention and Research, offered at the University since 2020/21, which integrates art, health, and education, promoting collaborative work between professionals; and (iii) Mil Pássaros (Thousand Birds), developed since 2020, which exemplifies the integration of environmental education and artistic practices. The theoretical basis of these training programs combines neuroscientific and educational evidence, emphasizing the importance of the first years of life for integral development. Studies, such as those by Heckman, reinforce the impact of early investment in children’s development. Edwin Gordon’s Music Learning Theory and Malloch and Trevarthen’s concept of ‘communicative musicality’ structure the design of these courses, recognizing music as a catalyst for cognitive, emotional, and social skills. The transformative role of music and the arts in educational and social contexts is emphasized, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, by proposing approaches that articulate creation, intervention, and research to promote human development from childhood onwards. Educational institutions are facing a crisis characterized by the need to address diverse learning styles and vocational aspirations, exacerbated by ongoing financial pressures. To navigate these challenges effectively, there is an urgent need to innovate educational practices and learning environments, ensuring they are adaptable and responsive to the evolving needs of students and the workforce. The adoption of the Industry 5.0 framework offers a promising solution, providing a holistic approach that emphasizes the integration of human creativity and advanced technologies to transform educational institutions into resilient, human-centric, and sustainable learning environments. In this context, this article presents a transdisciplinary methodology that integrates Asset Management (AM) with Social Innovation (SI) through Design Thinking (DT) to co-design Educational Facilities 5.0 with stakeholders. The application of the proposed approach in an AgroLab case study—a food and agricultural laboratory—demonstrates how the methodology enables the definition of an Educational Facility 5.0 and generates AM Design Knowledge to support informed decision-making in the subsequent design, implementation, and operation phases. Following DT principles—where knowledge emerges through iterative experimentation and insights from practical applications—this article also discusses the role of SI and DT in AM, the role of Large Language Models in convergent processes, and a vision for Educational Facilities 5.0. This article presents an initial effort to systematize two interrelated research fronts within ecological economics (EE): ecological microeconomics and ecological macroeconomics. In response to the field’s transdisciplinary and plural nature—attributes that, while enriching, may limit its political influence—the article proposes a conceptual delineation of these two domains as a means to strengthen EE’s analytical identity and facilitate dialogue with other economic approaches. Ecological microeconomics focuses on the material and energy intensity of economic activity, the complementarity of natural capital in production processes, and the redesign of consumption and firm behavior under ecological constraints. Ecological macroeconomics, in turn, centers on the biophysical limits to growth, the concept of sustainable and optimal scale, and the integration of environmental variables into macroeconomic indicators and policy frameworks. The article argues that both fronts, despite their distinct emphases, are united by the need for long-term structural change and a normative commitment to sustainability. Together, they offer a coherent basis for rethinking prosperity within the ecological boundaries of the Earth system. Full article

Addressing environmental challenges requires the inclusion of local communities with relevant knowledge of the social–ecological system in which they are embedded, in addition to using transdisciplinary approaches that are critical to the co-production of successful and sustainable environmental solutions. A qualitative methodology was used to examine stakeholders’ views of decadal changes in Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon on Portugal’s Atlantic coast. Seven focus groups were conducted, which included 42 stakeholders from coastal parishes, in order to obtain identical geographical representation with a study conducted a decade ago. Participants represented a diverse sample of groups interested in or affected by management options and activities in the lagoon system and were asked to reflect on the main changes that occurred over the last decade. Positive changes reflected an increase in the levels of environmental awareness, a positive trajectory of the environmental status of Ria de Aveiro, and a decrease in illegal fishing activities. Persisting concerns referred to the lack of an efficient management body for Ria de Aveiro, pressures related to changes in the hydrodynamic regime of the lagoon, the disappearance of native species and increase in invasive alien species, the abandonment of traditional activities (e.g., harvesting of seagrass and seaweed, salt production, agriculture in lagoon margins, and artisanal fishing), and the degradation and lack of maintenance of salt pans. Our findings highlight the importance of longer-term transdisciplinary and social–ecological research and illustrate how stakeholder views regarding the shortfalls of the movement towards the integrated management of ecosystems remain. Technological progress in agriculture plays an essential role in enhancing productivity, sustainability, and resilience. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of the concept of technological progress in agriculture using data extracted from the Web of Science database for the period 1979–2025. The main aim is to identify emerging trends, the structure of collaborative networks, and the influence of research on the development of smart agriculture. The methodology is based on a co-occurrence analysis of keywords, co-author networks, and institutional and international collaborations, providing a detailed insight into the dynamics of research in this field. The results show an accelerated growth of studies on the digitization of agriculture, with a particular focus on technologies such as artificial intelligence, precision agriculture, the Internet of Things, and agricultural process automation. According to the bibliometric analysis, China accounts for the largest share of publications in this field, followed by the United States and Australia. These countries also exhibit high levels of centrality in international collaboration networks, indicating their pivotal role in knowledge production and dissemination. Europe shows a fragmented but active collaborative network, while emerging countries are starting to strengthen their position through strategic partnerships. The findings suggest the need for transdisciplinary collaborations in order to mainstream technological progress in agriculture, emphasizing the importance of policies to support technology transfer and sustainable innovation. Green Infrastructure (GI) has increasingly been recognised as a crucial strategy for enhancing urban resilience, particularly in urban transportation systems facing the challenges of climate change. Although several conceptual frameworks for GI planning have been proposed, empirical studies examining their application in urban transport planning contexts remain limited. This study aims to validate a recently developed GI conceptual framework by evaluating its applicability in urban transportation systems. A structured questionnaire was administered to 94 participants in Aotearoa New Zealand comprising urban planners, engineers, architects, policymakers, and academics involved in transportation and sustainability planning with special focus on GI. The framework was assessed across key dimensions including the perceived benefits of GI in transportation, stakeholder and collaborative practices barriers to implementation, and indicators of perceived effectiveness. The results confirm that the stakeholders’ perceptions of GI are significantly aligned with the dimensions of the conceptual framework, reinforcing its validity in assessing GI effectiveness. Key findings highlight a disconnect between stakeholders’ general familiarity with GI and their understanding of its multifunctional benefits beyond stormwater management. Also, the prevalence of multidisciplinary collaboration suggests that additional interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches are required for more holistic GI planning. This study recommends that the conceptual framework be considered for city adaptation to GI integration, and to do so effectively, these knowledge and cooperation gaps must be addressed Full article

Understanding Earth as a complex, dynamic, and interconnected system is crucial to addressing the contemporary environmental challenges intensified in the Anthropocene. This article reviews foundational Earth System Science (ESS) developments, emphasizing its transdisciplinary nature and highlighting how it has evolved to address critical issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainability. Concurrently, Earth System Education (ESE) has emerged as an educational approach to foster holistic a understanding, environmental insights, and geoethical values among citizens. Integrating geoethics into ESE equips citizens with scientific knowledge and the ethical reasoning necessary for responsible decision making and proactive engagement in sustainability efforts. This article identifies system thinking and environmental insight as the key competencies that enable individuals to appreciate the interconnectedness of Earth’s subsystems and humanity’s role within this complex framework. This study advocates for embedding a holistic and geoethical view of the Earth system into formal and non-formal education, promoting inclusive, participatory, and action-oriented learning experiences. This educational shift is essential for empowering citizens to effectively address the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability, thereby fostering resilient, informed, and ethically responsible global citizenship in the Anthropocene. Addressing the escalating complexity of global sustainability challenges requires interventions that are not only technically effective but also cognitively and philosophically grounded. While the leverage points perspective has provided a useful framework for understanding systemic change, it can be enhanced through more operational coherence and cultural pluralism. This paper introduces the Deep and Shallow Sustainability Intervention (DSSI) framework, a novel conceptual model that integrates Taoist philosophical insights with contemporary systems thinking and the leverage points literature. Structured across five interconnected Taoist-inspired domains and ten leverage points, the framework extends and enriches Meadows’ leverage point theory by integrating pre-paradigmatic meta-cognitions, systemic momentum, and context-sensitive action. It emphasizes that sustainable transitions require the dynamic interplay between foundational source-code shifts and operational implementation. This framework contributes to the growing field of transformative sustainability science by (1) embedding non-Western epistemologies into systems transformation theory, (2) offering a structured yet flexible model for multi-level intervention design, and (3) enabling transdisciplinary dialogue between philosophy, paradigmatic shift, meta-systemic logic, governance, and practice. Preliminary applications in European rural transition contexts suggest its potential to enhance context-sensitive action and value-aligned systems innovation. The DSSI framework thus offers a timely and integrative approach for guiding long-term, systemic, and culturally responsive sustainability transitions. Full article

Microplastics are found in Earth’s atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere, and ecosphere. While there is a growing interest and need to solve this grand challenge in both the academic and policy realms, few have engaged with academics, policymakers, and community partners to co-identify the problem, co-design research, and co-produce knowledge in tackling this issue. Using a convergence research framework, we investigated the perception of microplastic pollution among different end users, delivered educational materials to K-12 teachers and practitioners, and identified key sampling points for assessing environmental microplastic concentrations in the Columbia River Basin, United States. Three community partner workshops identified regional issues and concerns associated with microplastic pollution and explored potential policy intervention strategies. The stakeholder survey, co-designed with community partners, identified varying perceptions around microplastic pollution across educators, government employees, non-profit employees, and industry practitioners. Pre- and post-test results of teacher workshops show increases in participants’ knowledge after taking a four-week summer class with the knowledge being translated to their students. Community partners also helped develop a unique passive sampling plan for atmospheric deposition of microplastics using synoptic moss samples and provided freshwater samples for microplastic quantification across the basin. Our study drew three major lessons for successfully conducting convergence environmental research—(1) communication and trust building, supported by the use of key-informants to expand networks; (2) co-creation through collaboration, where partners and students shaped research and education to enhance impact; and (3) change-making, as project insights were translated into policy discussions, community outreach, and classrooms. Mapping the mHealth Nexus: A Semantic Analysis of mHealth Scholars’ Research Propensities Following an Interdisciplinary Training Institute

Interdisciplinary research catalyzes innovation in mobile health (mHealth) by converging medical, technological, and social science expertise, driving critical advancements in this multifaceted field. Our longitudinal analysis evaluates how the NIH mHealth Training Institute (mHTI) program stimulates changes in research trajectories through a computational examination of 16,580 publications from 176 scholars (2015–2022 cohorts). We develop a hybrid analytical framework combining large language model (LLM) embeddings, Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP) dimensionality reduction, and Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) clustering to construct a semantic research landscape containing 329 micro-topics aggregated into 14 domains. GPT-4o-assisted labeling identified mHealth-related publications occupying central positions in the semantic space, functioning as conceptual bridges between disciplinary clusters such as clinical medicine, public health, and technological innovation. Kernel density estimation of research migration patterns revealed 63.8% of scholars visibly shifted their publication focus toward mHealth-dense regions within three years post-training. The reorientation demonstrates mHTI’s effectiveness in fostering interdisciplinary intellect with sustained engagement, evidenced by growth in mHealth-aligned publications from the mHTI scholars. Our methodology advances science of team science research by demonstrating how LLM-enhanced topic modeling coupled with spatial probability analysis can track knowledge evolution in interdisciplinary fields. The findings provide empirical validation for structured training programs’ capacity to stimulate convergent research, while offering a scalable framework for evaluating inter/transdisciplinary initiatives. The dual contribution bridges methodological innovation in natural language processing with practical insights for cultivating next-generation mHealth scholarship. Full article

Global demands for sustainable energy and advanced therapeutics necessitate innovative interdisciplinary solutions. Integrated biorefining emerges as a strategic response, enabling the co-production of biofuels and pharmaceutical compounds through biomass valorization. This integrated model holds promise in enhancing resource utilization efficiency while ensuring economic viability. Our critical review methodically evaluates seven pivotal methodologies: seven key strategies: microbial metabolites, synthetic biology platforms, biorefinery waste extraction, nanocatalysts, computer-aided design, extremophiles, and plant secondary metabolites. Through systematic integration of these approaches, we reveal pivotal synergies and potential technological innovations that can propel multi-product biorefinery systems. Persistent challenges, particularly in reconciling complex metabolic flux balancing with regulatory compliance requirements, are analyzed. Nevertheless, advancements in systems biology, next-generation bioprocess engineering, and artificial intelligence-enhanced computational modeling present viable pathways for overcoming these obstacles. This comprehensive analysis substantiates the transformative capacity of integrated biorefining in establishing a circular bioeconomy framework, while underscoring the imperative of transdisciplinary cooperation to address existing technical and policy constraints. Commonalities between linguistically and culturally sensitive pedagogy (LCRP) and education for sustainable futures (ESF) suggest the benefits of connecting these transdisciplinary themes in teacher education. This paper reports on a qualitative study of how educators made sense of connections between LCRP and ESF as part of a European teacher education project, using secondary analysis of project evaluation data. The context for the study is the Erasmus + Teacher Academy Project ‘Teaching Sustainability’ (TAP-TS) (2022–2025), which aimed to develop the sustainability competences of student teachers, teachers, and teacher educators through the co-design of learning and teaching resources during online, hybrid, and face-to-face events as part of an international community of practice. Activities linking LCRP and ESF were presented and evaluated in four discrete teacher education courses, as part of TAP-TS. The study found that connections between LCRP and ESF were meaningful for educators but that this differed between individuals related to their personal and professional experience. The transdisciplinary and international nature of TAP-TS provided learning opportunities, but significant changes are likely to require sustained support for teachers in schools and as part of school communities. Learning Along the GreenWay: An Experiential, Transdisciplinary Outdoor Classroom for Planetary Health Education

Built environment professionals are instrumental in envisioning, implementing and managing the urban realm to ensure that it is health supportive and sustainable. Central to their education is developing a deep understanding and appreciation of this responsibility and opportunity. Despite some progress in the classroom, challenges continue given the long history of siloed and separated disciplines and curricula. The climate emergency, ongoing chronic health conditions, and more recently the global pandemic demand a continued reframing of education away from the tradition of sequential, separated and unlinked faculty and school-based subjects to be transdisciplinary, experiential and authentic. Such principles are embraced by the Planetary Health Educational Framework and One Health. Against this theoretical context, we present our long-term educational practice using the GreenWay in Sydney, Australia, as an outdoor classroom for school and tertiary students. This multi-purpose, complex and nature-based green corridor in the urban heart of an international city facilitates experiential and transdisciplinary learning from a planetary health perspective. Based on the successes and challenges of our teaching, we reflect on the implications for environmental educators to deliver authentic and experiential outdoor education that inspires and empowers the next generation to create health-supportive and sustainable environments.
