Background/Objectives: Identifying and classifying abnormal lung sounds is essential for diagnosing patients with respiratory disorders. In particular, the simultaneous recording of auscultation signals from multiple clinically relevant positions offers greater diagnostic potential compared to traditional single-channel measurements. This study aims to improve the accuracy of respiratory sound classification by leveraging multichannel signals and capturing positional characteristics from multiple sites in the same patient. Methods: We evaluated the performance of respiratory sound classification using multichannel lung sound data with a deep learning model that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), based on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs). We analyzed the impact of the number and placement of channels on classification performance. Results: The results demonstrated that using four-channel recordings improved accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, and F1-score by approximately 1.11, 1.15, 1.05, 1.08, and 1.13 times, respectively, compared to using three, two, or single-channel recordings. Conclusion: This study confirms that multichannel data capture a richer set of features corresponding to various respiratory sound characteristics, leading to significantly improved classification performance. The proposed method holds promise for enhancing sound classification accuracy not only in clinical applications but also in broader domains such as speech and audio processing.  Full article

Neural networks (NNs) achieve breakthroughs in computer vision and natural language processing, yet their “black box” nature persists. Traditional methods prioritise parameter optimisation and loss design, overlooking NNs’ fundamental structure as topologically organised nonlinear computational systems. This work proposes a complex network theory framework decoding structure–function coupling by mapping convolutional layers, fully connected layers, and Dropout modules into graph representations. To overcome limitations of heuristic compression techniques, we develop a topology-sensitive adaptive pruning algorithm that evaluates critical paths via node strength centrality, preserving structural–functional integrity. On CIFAR-10, our method achieves 55.5% parameter reduction with only 7.8% accuracy degradation—significantly outperforming traditional approaches. Crucially, retrained pruned networks exceed original model accuracy by up to 2.63%, demonstrating that topology optimisation unlocks latent model potential. This research establishes a paradigm shift from empirical to topologically rationalised neural architecture design, providing theoretical foundations for deep learning optimisation dynamics. This paper addresses the trajectory tracking control problem of underactuated ships in ocean engineering, which faces the dual challenges of tracking error time–performance regulation and robustness design due to the system’s underactuated characteristics, model uncertainties, and external disturbances. Aiming to address the issues of traditional finite-time control (convergence time dependent on initial states) and fixed-time control (control chattering and parameter conservativeness), this paper proposes a predefined-time adaptive control framework that integrates an event-triggered mechanism and neural networks. By constructing a Lyapunov function with time-varying weights and designing non-periodic dynamically updated dual triggering conditions, the convergence process of tracking errors is strictly constrained within a user-prespecified time window without relying on initial states or introducing non-smooth terms. An adaptive approximator based on radial basis function neural networks (RBF-NNs) is employed to compensate for unknown nonlinear dynamics and external disturbances in real-time. Combined with the event-triggered mechanism, it dynamically adjusts the update instances of control inputs, ensuring prespecified tracking accuracy while significantly reducing computational resource consumption. Theoretical analysis shows that all signals in the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded, tracking errors converge to a neighborhood of the origin within the predefined-time, and the update frequency of control inputs exhibits a linear relationship with the predefined-time, avoiding Zeno behavior. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in complex marine environments. Compared with traditional control strategies, it achieves more accurate trajectory tracking, faster response, and a substantial reduction in control input update frequency, providing an efficient solution for the engineering implementation of embedded control systems in unmanned ships. Compared to traditional real-valued neural networks, which process only amplitude information, complex-valued neural networks handle both amplitude and phase information, leading to superior performance in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) image classification tasks. This paper proposes a multi-scale feature extraction (MSFE) method based on a 3D complex-valued network to improve classification accuracy by fully leveraging multi-scale features, including phase information. We first designed a complex-valued three-dimensional network framework combining complex-valued 3D convolution (CV-3DConv) with complex-valued squeeze-and-excitation (CV-SE) modules. This framework is capable of simultaneously capturing spatial and polarimetric features, including both amplitude and phase information, from PolSAR images. Furthermore, to address robustness degradation from limited labeled samples, we introduced a multi-scale learning strategy that jointly models global and local features. Specifically, global features extract overall semantic information, while local features help the network capture region-specific semantics. This strategy enhances information utilization by integrating multi-scale receptive fields, complementing feature advantages. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms various comparison methods, maintaining high classification accuracy across different sampling rates, thus validating its effectiveness and robustness. Effective earthquake early warning (EEW) is essential for disaster prevention in the built environment, enabling a rapid structural response, system shutdown, and occupant evacuation to mitigate damage and casualties. However, most current EEW systems lack rigorous reliability analyses of their predictive outcomes, limiting their effectiveness in real-world scenarios—especially for on-site warnings, where data are limited and time is critical. To address these challenges, we propose a Bayesian neural network (BNN) framework based on Stein variational gradient descent (SVGD). By performing Bayesian inference, we estimate the posterior distribution of the parameters, thus outputting a reliability analysis of the prediction results. In addition, we incorporate a continual learning mechanism based on elastic weight consolidation, allowing the system to adapt quickly without full retraining. Our experiments demonstrate that our SVGD-BNN model significantly outperforms traditional peak displacement (Pd)-based approaches. In a 3 s time window, the Pearson correlation coefficient R increases by 9.2% and the residual standard deviation SD decreases by 24.4% compared to a variational inference (VI)-based BNN. Furthermore, the prediction variance generated by the model can effectively reflect the uncertainty of the prediction results. The continual learning strategy reduces the training time by 133–194 s, enhancing the system’s responsiveness. These features make the proposed framework a promising tool for real-time, reliable, and adaptive EEW—supporting disaster-resilient building design and operation. Full article

China is one of the countries severely affected by earthquakes, making precise and timely identification of earthquake precursors essential for reducing casualties and property damage. A novel method is proposed that combines a rock acoustic emission (AE) detection technique with deep learning methods to facilitate real-time monitoring and advance earthquake precursor detection. The AE equipment and seismometers were installed in a granite tunnel 150 m deep in the mountains of eastern Guangdong, China, allowing for the collection of experimental data on the correlation between rock AE and seismic activity. The deep learning model uses features from rock AE time series, including AE events, rate, frequency, and amplitude, as inputs, and estimates the likelihood of seismic events as the output. Precursor features are extracted to create the AE and seismic dataset, and three deep learning models are trained using neural networks, with validation and testing. The results show that after 1000 training cycles, the deep learning model achieves an accuracy of 98.7% on the validation set. On the test set, it reaches a recognition accuracy of 97.6%, with a recall rate of 99.6% and an F1 score of 0.975. Additionally, it successfully identified the two biggest seismic events during the monitoring period, confirming its effectiveness in practical applications. Compared to traditional analysis methods, the deep learning model can automatically process and analyse recorded massive AE data, enabling real-time monitoring of seismic events and timely earthquake warning in the future. This study serves as a valuable reference for earthquake disaster prevention and intelligent early warning. Full article

In the era of smart agriculture, accurate identification of plant species is critical for effective crop management, biodiversity monitoring, and the sustainable use of medicinal resources. However, existing deep learning approaches often underperform when applied to fine-grained plant classification tasks due to the lack of domain-specific, high-quality datasets and the limited representational capacity of traditional architectures. This study addresses these challenges by introducing a novel, well-curated leaf image dataset consisting of 39 classes of medicinal and aromatic plants collected from the Aromatic and Medicinal Plant Research Station in Odakkali, Kerala, India. To overcome performance bottlenecks observed with a baseline Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that achieved only 44.94% accuracy, we progressively enhanced model performance through a series of architectural innovations. These included the use of a pre-trained VGG16 network, data augmentation techniques, and fine-tuning of deeper convolutional layers, followed by the integration of Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention blocks. Ultimately, we propose a hybrid deep learning architecture that combines VGG16 with Batch Normalization, Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs), Transformer modules, and Dilated Convolutions. This final model achieved a peak validation accuracy of 95.24%, significantly outperforming several baseline models, such as custom CNN (44.94%), VGG-19 (59.49%), VGG-16 before augmentation (71.52%), Xception (85.44%), Inception v3 (87.97%), VGG-16 after data augumentation (89.24%), VGG-16 after fine-tuning (90.51%), MobileNetV2 (93.67), and VGG16 with SE block (94.94%). These results demonstrate superior capability in capturing both local textures and global morphological features. The proposed solution not only advances the state of the art in plant classification but also contributes a valuable dataset to the research community. Its real-world applicability spans field-based plant identification, biodiversity conservation, and precision agriculture, offering a scalable tool for automated plant recognition in complex ecological and agricultural environments. The growth and sustainability of today’s global economy heavily relies on smooth maritime operations. The increasing security concerns to marine environments pose complex security challenges, such as smuggling, illegal fishing, human trafficking, and environmental threats, for traditional surveillance methods due to their limitations. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning, has offered strong capabilities for automating object detection, anomaly identification, and situational awareness in maritime environments. In this paper, we have reviewed the state-of-the-art deep learning models mainly proposed in recent literature (2020–2025), including convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, Transformers, and multimodal fusion architectures. We have highlighted their success in processing diverse data sources such as satellite imagery, AIS, SAR, radar, and sensor inputs from UxVs. Additionally, multimodal data fusion techniques enhance robustness by integrating complementary data, yielding more detection accuracy. There still exist challenges in detecting small or occluded objects, handling cluttered scenes, and interpreting unusual vessel behaviours, especially under adverse sea conditions. Additionally, explainability and real-time deployment of AI models in operational settings are open research areas. Overall, the review of existing maritime literature suggests that deep learning is rapidly transforming maritime domain awareness and response, with significant potential to improve global maritime security and operational efficiency. We have also provided key datasets for deep learning models in the maritime security domain. Full article

This paper presents a flight control framework based on neural network Model Predictive Control (NN-MPC) to tackle the challenges of acceleration command tracking for supersonic vehicles (SVs) in complex flight environments, addressing the shortcomings of traditional methods in managing nonlinearity, random disturbances, and real-time performance requirements. Initially, a dynamic model is developed through a comprehensive analysis of the vehicle’s dynamic characteristics, incorporating strong cross-coupling effects and disturbance influences. Subsequently, a predictive mechanism is employed to forecast future states and generate virtual control commands, effectively resolving the issue of sluggish responses under rapidly changing commands. Furthermore, the approximation capability of neural networks is leveraged to optimize the control strategy in real time, ensuring that rudder deflection commands adapt to disturbance variations, thus overcoming the robustness limitations inherent in fixed-parameter control approaches. Within the proposed framework, the ultimate uniform bounded stability of the control system is rigorously established using the Lyapunov method. Simulation results demonstrate that the method exhibits exceptional performance under conditions of system state uncertainty and unknown external disturbances, confirming its effectiveness and reliability. High-quality green gardens can markedly enhance the quality of life and mental well-being of their users. However, health and lifestyle constraints make it difficult for people to enjoy urban gardens, and traditional methods struggle to offer the high-fidelity experiences they need. This study introduces a 3D scene reconstruction and rendering strategy based on implicit neural representation through the efficient and removable neural radiation fields model (NeRF-RE). Leveraging neural radiance fields (NeRF), the model incorporates a multi-resolution hash grid and proposal network to improve training efficiency and modeling accuracy, while integrating a segment-anything model to safeguard public privacy. Take the crabapple tree, extensively utilized in urban garden design across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. A dataset comprising 660 images of crabapple trees exhibiting three distinct geometric forms is collected to assess the NeRF-RE model’s performance. The results demonstrated that the ‘harvest gold’ crabapple scene had the highest reconstruction accuracy, with PSNR, LPIPS and SSIM of 24.80 dB, 0.34 and 0.74, respectively. Compared to the Mip-NeRF 360 model, the NeRF-RE model not only showed an up to 21-fold increase in training efficiency for three types of crabapple trees, but also exhibited a less pronounced impact of dataset size on reconstruction accuracy. This study reconstructs real scenes with high fidelity using virtual reality technology. It not only facilitates people’s personal enjoyment of the beauty of natural gardens at home, but also makes certain contributions to the publicity and promotion of urban landscapes. Full article

The widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) has driven major advancements in wireless communication, especially in rural and suburban areas where low population density and limited infrastructure pose significant challenges. Accurate Path Loss (PL) prediction is critical for the effective deployment and operation of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in such environments. This study explores the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for PL modeling, utilizing a comprehensive dataset collected in a smart campus setting that captures the influence of terrain and environmental variations. Several CNN architectures were evaluated based on different combinations of input features—such as distance, elevation, clutter height, and altitude—to assess their predictive accuracy. The findings reveal that CNN-based models outperform traditional propagation models (Free Space Path Loss (FSPL), Okumura–Hata, COST 231, Log-Distance), achieving lower error rates and more precise PL estimations. The best performing CNN configuration, using only distance and elevation, highlights the value of terrain-aware modeling. These results underscore the potential of deep learning techniques to enhance IoT connectivity in sparsely connected regions and support the development of more resilient communication infrastructures. Edge detection, a cornerstone of computer vision, identifies intensity discontinuities in images, enabling applications from object recognition to autonomous navigation. This survey presents a mathematically grounded analysis of edge detection’s evolution, spanning traditional gradient-based methods, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), attention-driven architectures, transformer-backbone models, and generative paradigms. Beginning with Sobel and Canny’s kernel-based approaches, we trace the shift to data-driven CNNs like Holistically Nested Edge Detection (HED) and Bidirectional Cascade Network (BDCN), which leverage multi-scale supervision and achieve ODS (Optimal Dataset Scale) scores 0.788 and 0.806, respectively. Attention mechanisms, as in EdgeNAT (ODS 0.860) and RankED (ODS 0.824), enhance global context, while generative models like GED (ODS 0.870) achieve state-of-the-art precision via diffusion and GAN frameworks. Evaluated on BSDS500 and NYUDv2, these methods highlight a trajectory toward accuracy and robustness, yet challenges in efficiency, generalization, and multi-modal integration persist. By synthesizing mathematical formulations, performance metrics, and future directions, this survey equips researchers with a comprehensive understanding of edge detection’s past, present, and potential, bridging theoretical insights with practical advancements. Reducing gear noise in electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains is crucial due to the absence of internal combustion engine noise, making even minor acoustic disturbances noticeable. Manufacturing parameters significantly influence gear-generated noise, yet traditional analytical methods often fail to predict these complex relationships accurately. This research addresses this gap by introducing a data-driven approach using machine learning (ML) to predict gear noise levels from manufacturing and sensor-derived data. The presented methodology encompasses systematic data collection from various production stages—including soft and hard machining, heat treatment, honing, rolling tests, and end-of-line (EOL) acoustic measurements. Predictive models employing Random Forest, Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Neural Network algorithms were developed and compared to traditional statistical approaches. The analysis identified critical manufacturing parameters, such as surface waviness, profile errors, and tooth geometry deviations, significantly influencing noise generation. Advanced ML models, specifically Random Forest, XGBoost, and deep neural networks, demonstrated superior prediction accuracy, providing early-stage identification of gear units likely to exceed acceptable noise thresholds. Integrating these data-driven models into manufacturing processes enables early detection of potential noise issues, reduces quality assurance costs, and supports sustainable manufacturing by minimizing prototype production and resource consumption. This research enhances the understanding of gear noise formation and offers practical solutions for real-time quality assurance. Full article

Background: Unlike most cancers, breast cancer poses a persistent risk of distant recurrence—often years after initial treatment—making long-term risk stratification uniquely challenging. Current tools fall short in predicting late metastatic events, particularly for early-stage patients. Methods: We present an interpretable machine learning (ML) pipeline to predict distant recurrence-free survival at 5, 10, and 15 years, integrating Bayesian network-based causal feature selection, deep feed-forward neural network models (DNMs), and SHAP-based interpretation. Using electronic health record (EHR)-based clinical data from over 6000 patients, we first applied the Markov blanket and interactive risk factor learner (MBIL) to identify minimally sufficient predictor subsets. These were then used to train optimized DNM classifiers, with hyperparameters tuned via grid search and benchmarked against models from 10 traditional ML methods and models trained using all predictors. Results: Our best models achieved area under the curve (AUC) scores of 0.79, 0.83, and 0.89 for 5-, 10-, and 15-year predictions, respectively—substantially outperforming baselines. MBIL reduced input dimensionality by over 80% without sacrificing accuracy. Importantly, MBIL-selected features (e.g., nodal status, hormone receptor expression, tumor size) overlapped strongly with top SHAP contributors, reinforcing interpretability. Calibration plots further demonstrated close agreement between predicted probabilities and observed recurrence rates. The percentage performance improvement due to grid search ranged from 25.3% to 60%. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that combining causal selection, deep learning, and grid search improves prediction accuracy, transparency, and calibration for long-horizon breast cancer recurrence risk. The proposed framework is well-positioned for clinical use, especially to guide long-term follow-up and therapy decisions in early-stage patients. Full article
