The Potocki family of the Pilawa coat of arms was among the most powerful noble lineages of the former Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and its history is closely intertwined with that of Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. In the late seventeenth century, Feliks Kazimierz Potocki (1630–1702) founded the town of Krystynopol (now Chervonohrad), named in honor of his wife, Krystyna Lubomirska. The residence, passed down through successive generations of the Potocki family, was transformed in the mid-eighteenth century into an impressive Baroque palace-and-garden complex designed by Pierre Ricaudde Tirregaille, becoming a model example of the magnate cultural landscape on the border of present-day Poland and Ukraine. In the centuries that followed, the estate changed owners multiple times, suffered devastation during the world wars, and in the Soviet period housed the Museum of Atheism. Today, the partially restored palace accommodates a small regional museum. Although in the eighteenth century the palace was surrounded by an extensive Italian-French style garden with water canals, ponds, and fountains, the area has since been built over with public-utility buildings. This study presents a concept for the development of the surviving elements of the historical palace park. The project is based on historical analyses, field research, site inspections, interviews with museum staff and town residents, as well as a detailed dendrological inventory including an assessment of tree health. The study area covers 4.71 ha, and the current tree stand is composed mainly of Salix alba, Populus nigra, Populus alba, Betula pendula, Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior, Ulmus laevis, Acer negundo, and Acer pseudoplatanus. Archival sources allowed for the reconstruction of the original layout of the palace-park complex. The aim of the project is therefore to introduce new representative, educational, recreational, social, ecological, and touristic functions to the currently neglected area while respecting its historical heritage. The Fun Palace, a project initiated by Joan Littlewood and Cedric Price in 1961, exemplifies a pivotal transformation in the approach of cultural institutions toward their visitors. By centering on the audience experience, the Fun Palace signifies a departure from conventional institutional practices and represents a seminal example of unconventional art institution projects. This paper will examine the project, closely looking at the architecture, programming, and cybernetic structure of the Fun Palace. The purpose of this examination is to demonstrate how and why the ideas of Littlewood and Price predate the contemporary policies of institutions interacting with their audiences. Full article

Museums open to the public must reconcile heritage preservation requirements with energy-conscious microclimate management and visitors’ environmental experience. In historic buildings, indoor conditions are typically controlled primarily for preventive conservation, while opportunities for detailed assessment of human comfort are often limited by existing monitoring systems and operational constraints. This study investigates visitors’ perceptions of thermal conditions and indoor air quality (IAQ) in two branches of the National Museum in Krakow (NMK) characterized by different microclimate-control strategies: the mechanically ventilated and air-conditioned Cloth Hall and the predominantly passively controlled Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace. A pilot survey was conducted in spring 2023 to capture subjective assessments of thermal sensation and perceived IAQ. These perceptions were contextualized using long-term air temperature and relative humidity data (2013–2023) routinely monitored for conservation purposes. Environmental data were analyzed to assess the stability of indoor conditions and to provide background for interpreting survey responses, rather than to perform a normative evaluation of thermal comfort. The results indicate that visitors frequently perceived the indoor environment as slightly warm and reported lower air quality in the Palace, where air was often described as stale or stuffy. These perceptions occurred despite relatively small differences in monitored air temperature and relative humidity between the two buildings. The findings suggest that ventilation strategy, air exchange effectiveness, odor accumulation, room configuration, and lighting conditions may influence perceived environmental quality more strongly than temperature or humidity alone. Although limited in scope, this pilot study highlights the value of incorporating visitor perception into discussions of energy-conscious microclimate management in museums and indicates directions for further multidisciplinary research. In 1897, King Leopold II of Belgium opened the Brussels International Exposition, which, in the Palace of the Colonies, showcased objects and people from the Congo Free State. They were displayed as the property of the King, who was the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State from 1885 to 1908. The Palace of the Colonies was a combination of classically inspired imperial architecture and references to the Congo. The exposition was a huge success. As a result, the King built Africa Palace, a permanent ethnographic museum dedicated to his idea of Congo. It was located adjacent to his palace in Tervuren, now a suburb outside of Brussels. In 2018, the museum reopened as AfricaMuseum. This paper examines the inherent colonial frame of AfricaMuseum, both physically and ideologically, that continue to limit a significant socio-political shift for the museum, and the contemporary art pieces by Congolese and Burundian artists that have been tasked with the heavy lifting in shifting the narrative. Museums widely regard cultural and creative products as both a major revenue stream and a means of revitalizing in-house cultural resources. However, traditional decision-making systems for Museum Cultural Creative Products (MCCP) design largely depend on subjective judgments, leading to inefficiency, resource waste, and weak market performance. To address these challenges and support sustainable design decision-making, this study proposes an integrated “KANO–AHP–DEMATEL–VIKOR” framework that combines qualitative and quantitative methods. First, consumer requirements are elicited through questionnaire-based interviews and literature review; the KANO model identifies key user needs, AHP determines their relative weights, and DEMATEL analyzes causal relationships among criteria. By integrating these results, the VIKOR method evaluates and ranks alternative designs, forming a comprehensive multi-criteria optimization process. To validate the framework, an empirical case of the Palace Museum’s refrigerator magnets is conducted, comparing computed rankings with actual sales data to verify predictive validity. The small discrepancy between the two indicates that the model effectively forecasts consumer acceptance across design alternatives. The major innovation of this research lies in its cross-method integration that bridges user perception analysis with quantitative sustainability evaluation, offering a replicable tool for early-stage decision-making of museum creative products. Accordingly, the framework enhances design efficiency, reduces evaluation subjectivity, and contributes to the economic and environmental sustainability of Museum Cultural Creative Products. Cultural heritage sites play a crucial role in safeguarding identity, fostering cultural exchange, and generating sustainable tourism. Within this context, the Palace Museum in Beijing, which attracts 19 million annual visitors, offers a compelling case for examining the dynamics that shape revisit intention. This study explores the relationships among perceived authenticity, place attachment, destination satisfaction, visitor engagement, and revisit intention within the context of heritage tourism. Using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), data were collected from local visitors to the Palace Museum to analyze both the direct and mediating effects of these constructs. Findings indicate that perceived authenticity significantly enhances both destination satisfaction and visitor engagement, while place attachment makes a strong contribution to visitor engagement. Moreover, visitor engagement emerged as a more influential mediator than destination satisfaction in linking perceived authenticity to revisit intention, showing the importance of immersive and meaningful participation in shaping tourists’ behavioral intentions. These results suggest that while satisfaction remains a relevant concept, strategies that emphasize authenticity-driven experiences and fostering of deeper emotional and participatory bonds are more effective in sustaining revisits. This study advances the understanding of heritage tourism and provides practical insights for managing iconic heritage sites such as the Palace Museum. Full article

The identification of plant oils in polychrome cultural relics is crucial for understanding historical craftsmanship and for developing appropriate conservation strategies. Historically, plant oils were used as binders, protective coatings, and plasticizers, directly influencing the stability and appearance of artifacts. Their degradation—through oxidation, hydrolysis, and environmental exposure—makes accurate detection challenging. Recent advances in spectroscopic methods (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Raman), chromatographic techniques (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography), and mass spectrometry imaging (Desorption Electrospray Ionization—Mass Spectrometry Imaging) enable non-invasive or minimally invasive analysis of oils, even within complex matrices. Case studies, including the Meiwu ceiling of the Palace Museum and resin–oil varnishes, illustrate how multi-method approaches improve reliability. Ongoing challenges include interference from degradation products, limited sampling due to ethical concerns, and the absence of comprehensive reference libraries. Future research should prioritize non-destructive techniques, standardized protocols, and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance the precision and applicability of plant oil identification in cultural heritage conservation. In the context of rapid global digitalization and evolving media ecologies, sustainable cultural communication has become central to both museum transformation and the theoretical renewal of iconology. Images, as vital carriers of cultural memory and identity, are shifting from static, linear presentations to generative, interactive, and participatory modes enabled by digital platforms. This shift calls for a new paradigm in image communication—one that integrates meaning construction with technological and user-centered logics. This study adopts a “technology–culture–user” framework, drawing on constructivism, cultural memory theory, and symbolic interactionism to construct a digital-era iconological system. Through comparative analysis of the Chinese Palace Museum and the National Museum of Korea, the research reveals complementary approaches: the former emphasizes structured, authoritative knowledge dissemination, while the latter prioritizes immersive, user-driven interaction. These differences provide a basis for cross-cultural cooperation. Accordingly, the paper proposes five collaborative strategies: integrating advanced technologies, building shared image resource systems, enhancing user engagement mechanisms, expanding East Asian visual symbol networks, and adapting institutional frameworks to diverse cultural contexts. These strategies aim to support both theoretical innovation in iconology and sustainable regional cultural communication in the digital age. Full article

This study analyzes a lacquered ear cup excavated from the Luobowan tomb complex in Guigang, Guangxi, attributed to the Nanyue Kingdom of the early Han dynasty. A range of analytical techniques, including optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), were employed to investigate the structural layers, material composition, and preservation state of the artifact. The lacquerware consists of four traditional layers: a wooden core, fabric reinforcement, lacquer ground, and lacquer film, reflecting Central Plains lacquerware techniques. The wooden core was identified as Phoebe sp., and the fabric layer is likely hemp, though fiber degradation limited exact identification. The lacquer ground layer contains natural lacquer mixed with SiO2 from brick or tile powder. The lacquer film is a blend of Chinese and Vietnamese lacquer, with no synthetic additives or plant oils detected. The red lacquer layer contains cinnabar (HgS) as a pigment, while the black lacquer uses carbon black. Differences in moisture content between the red and black lacquer films are attributed to variations in surface porosity and pigment characteristics. This research provides valuable insights into Nanyue lacquer technology and preservation challenges. Full article

As a core structure within the Qing Changling Mausoleum, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, Long’en Hall preserves a relatively complete set of Qing dynasty imperial lacquered furniture. These furnishings provide critical physical evidence for studying Qing dynasty sacrificial rituals and the craftsmanship of court lacquerware. However, limited research has been conducted on the surface finishing techniques of such furnishings, posing challenges to their conservation and accurate restoration. This study focuses on representative furnishings from Long’en Hall—including an offering table, an incense pavilion, a throne, and a poke lamp—and employed a multi-method analytical approach comprising fluorescence microscopy (FM), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The analysis was conducted on the following two levels: the lacquer layer structure and material composition. The results show that the furnishings in the Long’en Hall adopt the typical structure of “lacquer ash layer–color lacquer layer”, and the color lacquer layer is composed of raw lacquer, tung oil, animal glue, and other natural organic ingredients as film-forming materials, supplemented with inorganic mineral pigments such as red lead (Pb3O4) and Au metal, which constitutes a stable organic–inorganic composite structure with the lacquer ash layer. The multi-analysis results show a good complementary and cross-corroboration relationship, providing the necessary technical support and a theoretical reference for Qing dynasty palace lacquer wood furniture as cultural relics worthy of scientific protection and imitation. Ancient paintings are an intangible window to the economy, politics, and customs of the past. Their characteristics have evolved or were made obsolete, with only limited contemporary connections remaining. This research aims to preserve and to interact with characters in 2D paintings to evolve their cultural identity through combining AI and AR. The scope of this research covers traditional Chinese paintings archived by the National Palace Museum in digital collections, mainly “New Year’s Market in a Time of Peace”. About 25 characters were used for training and 3D reconstruction in RODIN®. The models were converted into Augment® and Sketchfab® platforms as reactivated AR characters to interact with new urban fabrics and landscapes. Stable Diffusion® and RODIN® were successfully integrated to perform image training and reconstruct 3D AR models of various styles. As a result, interactions were conducted in two ways: in a mixed context with mixed characters in a painting and in a familiar context in the real world with mixed characters. It was found that AR facilitated the interpretation of how the old urban fabric was arranged. Using AI and AR is a current issue. Combining AI and AR can activate ubiquitous preservation to perform recursive processing from diffused images in order to reconstruct 3D models. This activated heritage preservation method is a reasonable alternative to redefining intangible subjects with a new and evolved contemporary cultural identity. Full article

Cultural heritage objects, including traditional Chinese polychrome paintings on architectures (Caihua) and wooden architectural components, frequently exhibit surface defects that are highly sensitive to environmental factors, resulting in progressive deterioration. However, due to limited data acquisition methods and quantitative analysis models, the stability and risks of defects such as cracks during environmental changes remain unclear. This study integrates photogrammetry and digital image processing to investigate through-cracks and craquelures on the surface of a well pavilion within the Palace Museum, Beijing. We confirmed the activity of these cracks, quantified crack widths, and studied the environmental influences on their development. Over a monitoring period of more than 15 months, the widths of seven cracks on four beams were measured alongside various environmental factors. Correlation analyses identified air humidity as the most significant factor influencing crack width fluctuations (p < 0.01). Numerical simulations revealed that short-term humidity exposure induces surface swelling and crack closure, whereas prolonged humidity leads to internal moisture transport and crack reopening. Furthermore, fitting parameters indicating the severity of crack variation correlated well with the degradation levels of the wooden components. In summary, this study establishes a monitoring and quantification procedure for assessing crack activity, explores the influence of humidity through numerical simulations, and identifies a potential indicator for the non-destructive assessment of timber component stability. The proposed framework offers an exploratory approach to addressing critical challenges in the health monitoring of wooden architectural components. Full article

This paper presents a new object of study—the so-called camerini, private rooms for study and reflection in the great stately palaces of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, which contained riches and artistic heritage of inestimable value and were characterized by very dim lighting. Analysis of the camerini, true precursors of the modern museum, is not only study of a specific subject but also extremely relevant because it allows us to re-analyze the entire evolution of the museum type and its characteristics, discovering its origins, following its evolution, and critically reviewing its current features. Starting from the case study of the Quarto Camerino of the Villa d’Este in Tivoli, a superset of the specific features of this type of space and possible problems in its 3D reconstruction, this article presents a method and a workflow aimed at reconstruction and visualization, with high visual quality of these spaces and their features. Digital surveying technologies were integrated with advanced methods that allowed for the reproduction of the full optical properties of spatial surfaces and with tools for semantic modeling and visualization to generate a digital artifact that is consistent with the available information and its interpretations and that can be analyzed both perceptually and analytically. The unique structure of ancient buildings poses a significant risk of fire hazards, so the assessment of potential fire risk is of great significance to fire safety management. This paper examines the fire risk associated with the building complex of the Palace Museum. Firstly, a fire risk assessment indicator system was constructed based on three dimensions: hazard factors, sensitivity of hazard-bearing bodies, and loss control factors. Secondly, the weight values for each index were calculated based on the entropy weight method. Finally, the monthly fire risk assessment levels in the year 2019 were visualized by using a geographic information system. Based on the fire risk assessment results, this study quantitatively reveals the fire risk driving mechanism of ancient buildings in the Palace Museum from the perspective of spatial stratified heterogeneity by using the geodetector model. The results show that there are differences between the main factors that affect the weight of fire risk assessment and the main factors that cause the spatial heterogeneity of fire risk. Factors such as the safety protective grade and staff number contribute to a stronger explanation of the spatial stratified heterogeneity for fire risk within the museum. The results can help us to understand the driving factors affecting the distribution patterns of fire risk for the Palace Museum and could provide support for the formulation of fire prevention and safety management measures. Modern Typologies as Spaces of Inter-Religious Engagement in British-Mandate Jerusalem, 1917–1938

The architecture of Jerusalem has for centuries been defined by its being a space sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The end of World War I marked the beginning of British Mandatory rule, which lasted until 1948. During this period, Jerusalem witnessed a proliferation of architectural projects that repositioned religion within modern typologies representing the city’s communities. This research investigates four such buildings: the British Rockefeller Museum, the Palestinian Palace Hotel, the American YMCA Building, which functioned as a community center and hostel, and the new Zionist Executive Building. The integration of religious elements into these edifices is examined using the concept of inter-religious engagement and by applying the theory of purification and hybridization. The research demonstrates that British and American Christians, Zionist Jews, and Muslim Palestinians, used different strategies to produce inter-religious engagement—either intentionally or because of British-dictated political constructs. British and American Christians embedded religious elements within modern typologies to reflect peaceful co-existence, while Zionist Jews and Muslim Palestinians used them to construct national identity. Although conceived as “purely” secular, these modern typologies were hybridized by the integration of religious spaces or emblems, revealing further dimensions to our understanding and assessment of 20th-century urban secular architecture and its intersection with religions.
