The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has high maternal and neonatal mortality rates and only a third of mothers and newborns have a postpartum or postnatal care visit. Increasing male participation and enhancing women’s autonomy are strategies to increase maternal healthcare utilization, but their applicability to first-time mothers (FTMs) in Kinshasa, DRC is unknown. We conducted a secondary analysis using cross-sectional survey data from a maternal and child health project among FTMs and their male partners in Kinshasa. The sample consisted of 1750 FTMs aged 15–24 years. The outcome variables were (1) a postpartum care visit within six weeks of facility discharge for the mother, (2) a postnatal care visit within six weeks of facility discharge for the neonate, and (3) either a postnatal or postpartum care visit within six weeks of facility discharge. Two logistic multivariate regression models were run for each outcome. The first model included all explanatory and demographic variables, and the second model added two interaction terms to test for mediation by in-union status. The male participation in maternal care index was negatively associated with all outcomes and the male participation in childcare index was positively associated with all outcomes. In-union status moderated the relationship between the male involvement indices and postpartum care for the mother but not for postnatal care for the newborn. Our findings show that the type of male participation may be meaningful for increasing postpartum and postnatal care-seeking and male partner participation initiatives need to be contextualized to prevent adverse outcomes. Climate-related disturbances are increasingly identified as major determinants of food insecurity in fragile environments, yet empirical evidence remains scarce in conflict-affected areas such as the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Using high-frequency FAO DIEM-Monitoring surveys (2022–2026), this paper estimates the causal effect of climate shocks on household food security in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, and Tanganyika. Food security is measured with five validated indicators (FCS, HDDS, HHS, FIES, and rCSI); capturing multiple dimensions of access, consumption, and coping. To address endogeneity in self-reported shock exposure, the authors apply an instrumental-variable Conditional Mixed Process (IV-CMP) model and triangulate results with a pseudo-panel fixed-effects ordered probit model based on FIES severity. Objective climate proxies (rainfall and NDVI) are used to reinforce robustness. The results indicate that climate shocks lead to a significant deterioration in food consumption and raise the likelihood of households experiencing both moderate and severe food insecurity, thereby undermining sustainable food security. Effects are heterogeneous across provinces, reflecting the interaction between climate variability, conflict intensity, and market access constraints. Female-headed households are disproportionately affected in some areas, highlighting gendered vulnerabilities, while income, education, livestock ownership, and land access mitigate vulnerability. These findings highlight the need for integrated and sustainability-oriented policy responses combining climate-smart agriculture, adaptive social protection, early warning systems, and conflict-sensitive programming. Overall, this research advances existing knowledge by delivering rigorous causal insights based on multiple food security indicators and advanced econometric techniques in a highly fragile setting. Mpox remains endemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where co-endemic infections and non-communicable comorbidities may influence disease severity and clinical outcomes. However, data on associated factors of adverse outcomes among hospitalised adults with mpox in African settings remain limited. This study aimed to describe the clinical profile of adults hospitalised with mpox in South Kivu Province, eastern DRC, and to explore associations between selected comorbid conditions, including HIV infection, malaria, and hyperglycaemia, and mpox disease severity, mortality, and hospitalisation duration. We conducted a multicentre retrospective observational study among adults admitted to five mpox treatment centres in South Kivu Province, DRC, between January 2024 and December 2025. Demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were extracted from routine hospital registers. Mpox disease severity (available only for a subset of participants) was classified according to WHO criteria. Participants included adults with suspected, probable or laboratory-confirmed mpox according to WHO case definitions in use during the study period. In addition to mpox disease severity, outcomes of interest included in-hospital mortality and duration of hospitalisation. Multivariable regression models were used to explore associations between selected comorbidities and clinical outcomes after adjustment for age and sex. Among 652 hospitalised adults included in the analysis, the median age was 26 years (IQR 21.0–35.0), and 383/652 (58.7%) were female. Among patients with recorded severity data (n = 104), moderate or severe mpox was documented in 88/104 (84.6%) patients. Overall mortality was 14/645 (2.2%). HIV infection was identified in 5 of the 71 participants tested (7.0%). Among participants with available test results, HIV infection appeared to be associated with higher mpox severity and mortality. Increasing age, but not HIV infection, malaria, or glycaemic status, was associated with longer hospitalisation. Because laboratory investigations were performed in only a subset of participants and missing data were substantial, these findings should be interpreted cautiously and considered exploratory. Prospective studies incorporating systematic laboratory testing and standardised clinical data collection are needed to better define factors associated with severe mpox in endemic African settings. In August 2024, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS), and the World Health Organization (WHO) followed with a second Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), in response to the rapid expansion of clade Ib monkeypox virus (MPXV) across eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and neighboring countries. Both declarations have since been lifted (September 2025 and January 2026), yet clade Ib transmission and severe outcomes in pregnant women and children persist. We argue that closing these emergency mechanisms marks not the end of the epidemic but the start of a harder phase: sustaining surveillance, care, and research amid shrinking donor support, including the dissolution of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). We contend that integrating mpox into existing HIV, sexually transmitted infection (STI), and reproductive health platforms is the most realistic route to durable routine care, while pregnancy, paediatric disease, severe cases, and zoonotic spillover still need dedicated pathways. Sustainable management ultimately depends on domesticated financing, stronger institutions, genuine community engagement, and action on the ecological drivers of spillover. Full article

Understanding how land-use change affects habitat fragmentation and connectivity is essential for assessing landscape degradation and conservation effectiveness in protected areas globally. It is particularly acute in tropical protected areas where anthropogenic pressures are intensifying. This study investigated long-term landscape dynamics, forest fragmentation, and structural connectivity in the Bena Mulumbu Hunting Domain, a Category VI protected area located in the Miombo woodland region of southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Landsat imagery acquired in 1995, 2005, 2015, and 2025 was classified using the Random Forest algorithm into six land-cover classes (Miombo woodland, savanna, agricultural land, mining areas, built-up/bare land, and water bodies) to quantify land-cover changes over 30 years. Landscape composition was assessed using the percentage of landscape (PLAND), Shannon diversity metrics, and transition analyses. At the same time, fragmentation and structural connectivity of Miombo woodland were evaluated along an edge-to-core gradient (0–2 km, 2–4 km, 4–6 km, and >6 km) using landscape metrics. Results showed that savanna remained the dominant land-cover type throughout the study period. However, the landscape underwent progressive reorganization characterized by recurrent transitions among Miombo woodland, savanna, and agricultural land, leading to increased spatial heterogeneity. Fragmentation analyses revealed significant spatial differences in total core area among zones (Kruskal–Wallis: H = 8.12, p = 0.044); however, after normalization by zone area, no consistent edge-to-core gradient was observed for core habitat proportion, indicating that raw differences primarily reflect zone size rather than a systematic ecological gradient. Despite increasing fragmentation, structural connectivity remained high across the hunting domain. The CONNECT index increased significantly from the edge toward the core zone (p = 0.003), highlighting better-connected forest networks in interior sectors. These findings suggest that the Bena Mulumbu Hunting Domain is experiencing an intermediate stage of landscape transformation, where forest fragmentation is evident but has not yet resulted in widespread connectivity loss. Maintaining existing forest cores and connectivity corridors should therefore be prioritized to prevent further degradation of ecological integrity. These findings challenge the assumption that landscape degradation in protected tropical Miombo woodlands necessarily follows a simple edge-to-core gradient. Full article

Introduction: Historically, human infections with clade Ia monkeypox virus (MPXV) primarily occurred through zoonotic transmission with limited secondary human-to-human transmission. Recent studies suggest increasing evidence of human-to-human transmission of some clade Ia lineages. This report documents the first imported clade Ia mpox case in Shanghai, representing the second documented case in China. Methods: Patient demographics, clinical profiles, epidemiological history, and close contacts were obtained through interviews with the patient and attending physicians. Clinical specimens were collected for real-time fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and whole-genome sequencing. Contact tracing was implemented, involving a 21-day health monitoring of close contacts. Results: The patient presented with moderate symptoms, including fever, rash, and respiratory manifestations. Genome sequencing identified the virus as clade Ia, showing 99.96% nucleotide identity to a strain from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Eight close contacts were identified with no secondary infection reported. Conclusions: This case was confirmed as an imported clade Ia mpox case originating in the DRC. The “four JOINTs” cross-agency collaborative mechanism between the CDC and customs played a significant role in effectively stopping local transmission. Challenges in remote investigation highlight the need for stronger international collaboration. Establishing an integrated “early warning-control-tracking” system, coupled with public health intervention, is crucial for reducing importation risks and safeguarding national health security. Forest canopy gaps are key indicators of forest dynamics, yet their vertical organization remains poorly quantified across forest types. While canopy gaps are commonly interpreted as signatures of disturbance regimes, their size distribution and vertical organization may also reflect intrinsic differences in stand structure, crown architecture, and density-dependent interactions. We hypothesize that the vertical distribution of canopy gap size differs among forest types, reflecting contrasting structural organization and developmental trajectories. Using airborne LiDAR, we quantified vertical gap size distributions in two Central African old-growth forest types: monodominant Gilbertiodendron dewevrei (GIL) and MIXED forests, across two sites in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Lileko and Yangambi). We also derived structural ratios normalizing gap area by basal area and canopy height. Results show clear divergence in vertical gap profiles. GIL forests consistently exhibit lower canopy openness than MIXED forests. Between heights of 10 and 20 m, total gap area per hectare ranged from 39.11 (95% CI: 19.84–83.5) to 567.56 (95% CI: 229.44–707.48) m2 ha−1 in GIL forests, compared with 69.10 (95% CI: 55.28–123.51) to 1244.97 (95% CI: 784.73–1360.45) m2 ha−1 in MIXED forests across both sites. Structural ratios further confirm that GIL forests maintain smaller gap areas relative to basal area and canopy height. Overall, the results support the three study hypotheses, demonstrating that vertical gap size distributions and their normalization by stand structural attributes provide robust and transferable indicators for discriminating among Central African old-growth forest types and developmental stages, highlighting the importance of structural context for interpreting tropical forest dynamics. Background/Objectives: Food system assessments in Sub-Saharan Africa have predominantly focused on caloric availability, often overlooking the structural and nutritional quality of the food supply. This study examines what drives and constrains food system transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa under different development pathways, using long-term changes in caloric availability, adjusted protein density, the balance between animal and plant proteins, and the diversification of animal protein sources as the empirical basis for this assessment. Methods: The analysis is based on data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for the period 1961–2023, covering Nigeria, the Republic of the Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, South Africa and Ethiopia. A longitudinal approach was applied where data were available, complemented by a recent comparative analysis (2010–2023). Derived indicators include total protein supply, adjusted protein density, the share of animal and plant proteins and the Herfindahl–Hirschman index (HHI) to assess the diversification of animal protein sources. Results: Findings show that increases in caloric availability are not consistently associated with improvements in adjusted protein density or nutritional quality. Significant differences are observed across countries in protein supply levels, structural composition, and diversification patterns. Results reveal heterogeneous trajectories of food systems, from diversified to structurally constrained or highly concentrated systems. Conclusions: Beyond caloric availability, the structure and quality of the food supply are essential for assessing food system performance. Quantitative gains alone do not ensure improved nutritional or sustainable outcomes. The study highlights the importance of considering protein supply structure, diversification and nutritional efficiency in the context of SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and broader food system transformation. The ongoing 2026 Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo highlights the continued vulnerability of Central Africa to recurrent Ebola emergence. This outbreak emerged less than six months after the previous one ended, appears to represent one of the shortest documented inter-epidemic intervals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo based on currently available outbreak reports. Current surveillance systems remain largely reactive, focusing on the detection of human cases after zoonotic spillover has occurred. While strengthening health systems, diagnostic capacity, and early case detection remains the cornerstone of Ebola preparedness, growing research suggests that environmental and climatic information may eventually contribute to a broader understanding of spillover risk within a One Health framework. However, current evidence remains insufficient to identify validated environmental indicators or operational thresholds capable of predicting Ebola spillover events. Recent modeling studies have demonstrated that environmental drivers of Ebola emergence remain highly context-dependent and cannot yet support operational early warning systems. This commentary argues that continued research integrating environmental monitoring, remote sensing, ecological observations, and epidemiological data may improve understanding of Ebola emergence and eventually contribute to future preparedness strategies. Rather than proposing climate-informed preparedness approaches as an operational prediction tool, we emphasize its potential as a complementary research priority requiring further validation before any operational implementation. Bundibugyo virus disease, caused by Bundibugyo virus (Orthoebolavirus bundibugyoense), is a severe human Ebola disease with substantial mortality, unresolved reservoir ecology, limited diagnostic implementation, and no licensed vaccines or therapeutics specifically approved for this Orthoebolavirus species. The May 2026 public health emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda renewed the need for a focused synthesis of Bundibugyo virus-specific diagnostics and medical countermeasures. This review synthesizes the peer-reviewed literature, preprints, and official public-health documents on diagnostics, antivirals, therapeutics, vaccines, and post-exposure prophylaxis. Comparative evidence from the Ebola virus, Sudan virus, Marburg virus, and pan-filovirus platforms is included only where it clarifies Bundibugyo virus-specific evidence, exposes unsupported extrapolation, or defines preparedness gaps. The 2007–2008 outbreak showed that assays optimized for known filoviruses can miss divergent ebolaviruses; the 2026 outbreak underscored the importance of diagnostic breadth, sequencing-based confirmation, decentralized laboratory capacity, and regional coordination. Clinical and immunological data indicate that Bundibugyo virus cannot be reduced to an Ebola virus-like model. Countermeasure evidence remains largely preclinical: recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus vaccines expressing Bundibugyo virus glycoprotein provide the strongest direct animal protection data, whereas antiviral and antibody-based evidence varies widely and requires careful separation of direct Bundibugyo virus data from platform-based extrapolation. As supply risks for cobalt and other critical metals increase, detecting concealed orebodies in mature mining districts has become increasingly important for resource renewal. The Ksignal area, located on the margin of the Kambove mining district in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, lies near the M’sesa-Shangolowe structural system and exhibits copper geochemical anomalies. Together with the district’s position in the core of the Central African Copperbelt, these features indicate strong potential for concealed copper–cobalt mineralization. To investigate this potential, we conducted a semi-airborne transient electromagnetic survey in the Ksignal area. Because induced polarization effects can distort transient electromagnetic responses and complicate resistivity interpretation, we account for these effects and jointly estimate resistivity and chargeability from the observed data. The resulting resistivity–chargeability framework reveals an electrical discontinuity, which we interpret as an electrical structural interface in the Ksignal area. By integrating this inferred interface with borehole constraints and copper geochemical anomalies, we identify and interpret composite anomalies related to concealed mineralization. The results delineate a coherent candidate zone east of the inferred electrical structural interface, trending from near north–south to north-northwest and partly coinciding with the copper geochemical anomaly. This work provides geophysical evidence for deep and peripheral exploration in the Kambove mining district and supports the development of multiparameter target-delineation workflows for brownfield exploration. Cobalt has emerged as a strategic critical metal due to its essential role in rechargeable batteries, high-performance alloys, catalysts, and clean energy technologies. However, its supply chain remains heavily dependent on cobalt produced as a by-product of copper and nickel mining and is geographically concentrated, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This review provides a comprehensive assessment of cobalt geology, mineralogy, global reserves, market trends, primary extraction routes, and emerging secondary recovery strategies. Unlike previous reviews that address these topics separately, this work integrates geological occurrence, mineralogical characteristics, extraction technologies, and resource circularity within a unified framework aimed at evaluating future cobalt supply resilience. The main cobalt-bearing deposit types of sediment-hosted Cu–Co deposits, Ni–Co laterites, and magmatic Ni–Cu–Co sulphide deposits are compared in terms of their mineralogical characteristics and processing requirements. Hydrometallurgy is identified as the dominant industrial route, typically combining high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) with downstream purification and recovery processes such as solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX–EW). Emphasis is placed on the relationship between ore mineralogy and process selection, as well as on the growing integration of secondary resources, including tailings, slags, and spent batteries, into existing cobalt production chains. Despite promising recovery rates at laboratory scale, challenges remain in impurity control, economic scalability, and integration into established refining infrastructure. This review demonstrates that secondary resources are evolving from supplementary feedstocks to strategically important contributors to cobalt supply. Future supply security will depend on feedstock diversification, more flexible refining systems, improved impurity management, and the implementation of sustainable circular-economy strategies. Personal names carry cultural and linguistic identity, yet most African countries lack large-scale, structured name datasets suitable for natural language processing (NLP) research and computational social science. We present CongoNames, the first large-scale corpus of personal names from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), derived from publicly released national secondary-school examination palmarès (result lists) 8,053,983 published annually by the DRC Ministry of Education. The corpus comprises name records spanning 16 examination years (2008–2023) across 12 provinces and 304 sub-provincial regions, each enriched with a reported sex marker (M/F) and regional provenance metadata. We describe a fully deterministic, layered processing pipeline (bronze–silver–gold architecture) that converts raw protable document format (PDF) documents into structured comma-separated values (CSV) datasets without manual annotation or machine-learning-based inference. The dataset is validated against school-level census counts extracted from the same source PDFs, yielding extraction error rates below 2% for all years except 2023 (7.81%, flagged due to a layout change). Descriptive analyses document name length and token-count distributions, character-level n-gram profiles, provincial diversity indices, and inter-provincial name-inventory overlap, collectively establishing the dual linguistic origin—locally rooted Bantu components and Christian/French-origin components—that characterize modern Congolese naming practice. The dataset, processing code, and documentation are released openly to support research in African natural language processing (NLP), onomastics, and computational social science. Full article

Rat hepatitis E virus (rHEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen, increasingly detected in human, animal, and environmental samples globally. Although rHEV shares the same subfamily as human hepatitis E virus (HEV; Paslahepevirus balayani), which is endemic across Africa, little is known about rHEV ecology on the continent beyond an isolated travel-related case linked to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon. As a rodent-borne virus, rHEV poses a public health risk due to the widespread presence of the synanthropic reservoir Rattus norvegicus. Limited data on hepatitis of unknown origin further emphasise the need for active surveillance to understand the distribution, epidemiology, and impact of rHEV on human health. This review summarises our current knowledge on the global distribution of rHEV in humans, animals, and the environment, highlighting the importance of ongoing surveillance through the One Health Approach. Monitoring the virus in countries such as Nigeria, a country with a significant pig population and documented circulation of hepatitis E virus (HEV), could improve healthcare for immunocompromised and at-risk populations. Furthermore, the viral evolution may facilitate host adaptation and transmission, thereby complicating control efforts. These factors underscore the necessity for targeted research and intervention strategies to address the emerging threat of rHEV effectively. Full article

Background: The fight against HIV in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is hindered by systemic challenges; notably, limited access to HIV viral load (VL) testing. Achieving VL suppression is the primary global target for eliminating HIV as a public health threat by 2030. This study aimed to determine the rate of VL suppression and identify associated factors among people living with HIV (PLHIV) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Bunia. Methods: A descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among PLHIV receiving care at treatment sites in Bunia over a period of 11 months. Participants were selected using a two-stage sampling approach, consisting of non-random quota sampling followed by simple random sampling. The primary endpoint was the proportion of PLHIV achieving VL suppression, while associated factors were identified using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: Overall, 603 PLHIV were enrolled, including 180 males (29.9%) and 423 females (70.1%). The median age was 40 years (IQR: 32–48), median duration on ART was 38 months (IQR: 15–91), and VL suppression was achieved by 75% of the participants. While this indicates significant progress, it remains below the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (aOR = 139.43; 95% CI: 66.63–291.76; p < 0.001) and being female (aOR = 2.15; 95% CI: 1.02–4.53; p = 0.044) emerged as independent predictors of virological success. Conclusions: Enhancing access to VL testing and optimizing ART adherence support strategies are critical to improving VL suppression rates in Bunia. Addressing these gaps is essential for the DRC to align with the global health objectives. Full article
