Recently, the usage of mobile phone-based games has increased due to the growing accessibility and convenience they provide. Using a descriptive-quantitative design, a disaster-based mobile application was developed in this study to enhance disaster literacy among the private senior high schools in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Davao City, the Philippines. The developed application was provided together with survey questionnaires to 364 students randomly selected from different schools in Davao City usingF a simple random sampling method. The technology acceptance (TAM) model was used to explain how users accepted the new technology. The mobile application was designed with features in four disaster scenarios—fire, flood, volcano, and earthquake. The results revealed a high acceptance, with an average score of the perceived usefulness (PE) of 4.52, perceived ease of use (PEOU) of 4.44, and a behavioral intention (BI) of 4.12. The students accepted the application to enhance disaster risk reduction and management. Aligned with SDG 4 and SDG 11, the application can be used to equip users with the knowledge to respond to disasters and ensure community resilience. Full article

As the global population ages, older adults face growing psychological challenges such as loneliness, cognitive decline, and loss of social roles. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including chatbots and voice-based systems, offer new pathways to emotional support and mental stimulation. However, older adults often encounter significant barriers in accessing and effectively using AI tools. This review examines the current landscape of AI applications aimed at enhancing psychological well-being among older adults, identifies key challenges such as digital literacy and usability, and highlights design and training strategies to bridge the digital divide. Using socioemotional selectivity theory and technology acceptance models as guiding frameworks, we argue that AI—especially in the form of conversational agents—holds transformative potential in reducing isolation and promoting emotional resilience in aging populations. We conclude with recommendations for inclusive design, participatory development, and future interdisciplinary research. Full article

Systems thinking (ST) is a foundational cognitive skillset to advance sustainability education but has not been well examined for learners prior to higher education. This case study research in rural middle schools in the Midwestern U.S. examines systems thinking outcomes of a place-based energy literacy unit focused on energy-efficient building design. The unit employs the science of energy-efficient, green buildings to illuminate the ways in which energy flows between natural and built environments. The unit emphasized electrical, light, and thermal energy systems and the ways these systems interact to create functional and energy-efficient buildings. This study focuses on three case study classrooms where students across schools (n = 89 students) created systems models as part of pre- and post-unit tests (n = 162 models). The unit tests consisted of student drawings, annotations, and writings, culminating into student-developed systems models. Growth from pre- to post-test was observed in both the identification of system elements and the linkages between elements. System elements included in the models were common classroom features, such as windows, lights, and temperature control, suggesting that rooting the unit in place-based teaching may support ST skills. In an era where digitalization shapes economic and social landscapes, the intersection of digital skills, ethics, and integrity plays a crucial role in understanding the vulnerability of youth classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). This study explores how risky internet use and digital skill gaps contribute to socio-economic exclusion, integrating a multivariate and spatial approach to assess regional disparities in Europe. This study adopts a systems thinking perspective to explore digital exclusion as an emergent outcome of multiple interrelated subsystems. The research employs logistic regression, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Promax rotation, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to examine the impact of digital behaviors on NEET status. Using Eurostat data aggregated at the country level for the period (2000–2023) across 28 European countries, this study evaluates 24 digital indicators covering social media usage, instant messaging, daily internet access, data protection awareness, and digital literacy levels. The findings reveal that low digital skills significantly increase the likelihood of being NEET, while excessive social media and internet use show mixed effects depending on socio-economic context. A strong negative correlation between digital security practices and NEET status suggests that youths with a higher awareness of online risks are less prone to socio-economic exclusion. The GIS analysis highlights regional disparities, where countries with limited digital access and lower literacy levels exhibit higher NEET rates. Digital exclusion is not merely a technological issue but a multidimensional socio-economic challenge. To reduce the NEET rate, policies must focus on enhancing digital skills, fostering online security awareness, and addressing regional disparities. Integrating GIS methods allows for the identification of territorial clusters with heightened digital vulnerabilities, guiding targeted interventions for improving youth employability in the digital economy. In the digital era, understanding the intention to use generative AI is critical, as it enhances productivity, transforms workflows, and enables humans to focus on higher-value tasks. Drawing upon the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) and the technology threat avoidance theory (TTAT), this research integrates perceived AI literacy into the AI acceptance–avoidance framework as a central variable. This study gathered 583 valid survey responses from China and validated its model using a dual-phase, combined method that integrates structural equation modeling and artificial neural networks. Research findings indicate that the model explains 51.6% of the variance in generative AI usage intention. Except for social influence, all variables within the extended framework significantly impact the usage intention, with perceived AI literacy being the strongest predictor (β = 0.33, p < 0.001). Additionally, perceived AI literacy mitigates the adverse effect of perceived threats on the intention to use AI. Practical implications suggest that enterprises adopt a tiered strategy, as follows: maximize perceived benefits by integrating AI skills into reward systems and providing task-automation training; minimize perceived costs through dedicated technical support and transparent risk mitigation plans; and cultivate AI literacy via progressive learning paths, advancing from data analysis to innovation. As the global energy transition accelerates, the integration of solar power and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies offers new pathways for sustainable local development. This study examines four Serbian municipalities—Šabac, Sombor, Pirot, and Čačak—to assess how AI-enabled solar power systems can enhance energy resilience, reduce emissions, and support community-level sustainability goals. Using a mixed-method approach combining spatial analysis, predictive modeling, and stakeholder interviews, this research study evaluates the performance and institutional readiness of local governments in terms of implementing intelligent solar infrastructure. Key AI applications included solar potential mapping, demand-side management, and predictive maintenance of photovoltaic (PV) systems. Quantitative results show an improvement >60% in forecasting accuracy, a 64% reduction in system downtime, and a 9.7% increase in energy cost savings. These technical gains were accompanied by positive trends in SDG-aligned indicators, such as improved electricity access and local job creation in the green economy. Despite challenges related to data infrastructure, regulatory gaps, and limited AI literacy, this study finds that institutional coordination and leadership commitment are decisive for successful implementation. The proposed AI–Solar Integration for Local Sustainability (AISILS) framework offers a replicable model for emerging economies. Policy recommendations include investing in foundational digital infrastructure, promoting low-code AI platforms, and aligning AI–solar projects with SDG targets to attract EU and national funding. This study contributes new empirical evidence on the digital–renewable energy nexus in Southeast Europe and underscores the strategic role of AI in accelerating inclusive, data-driven energy transitions at the municipal level. This entry explores the multifaceted intersections of gender and digital technologies, offering a comprehensive analysis of how structural inequalities are reproduced, contested, and transformed in digital contexts. It is structured into six interrelated sections that collectively address key dimensions of gendered digital contexts. It begins by addressing the gender digital divide, particularly in the Global South, emphasizing disparities in access, literacy, and sociocultural constraints. The second section examines gendered labor in the tech industry, highlighting persistent inequalities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, employment, and platform-based work. The third part focuses on gender representation in digital spaces, revealing how algorithmic and platform design perpetuate biases. The fourth section discusses gender bias in AI and disinformation, underscoring the systemic nature of digital inequalities. This is followed by an analysis of online gender-based violence, particularly its impact on marginalized communities and participation in digital life. Background/Objectives: Legislative changes in educational systems have influenced how student learning is understood and promoted. In physical education (PE), there has been a shift from behaviorist models to more holistic approaches. In this context, physical literacy (PL) is presented as an emerging pedagogical model in school PE, aimed at fostering students’ motor competence in a safe, efficient, and meaningful way. The aim of this study is to analyze the origins, foundations, methodological elements, and educational value of PL, highlighting its potential to promote holistic and inclusive learning as the basis for an emerging PL model. Methods: A narrative review was conducted through a literature search in the Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and SportDiscus databases up to June 2025, focusing on scientific literature related to PL and PE. The analysis included its historical background, philosophical and theoretical foundations, and the key methodological elements and interventions that support its use as a pedagogical model. Results/Discussion: The findings indicate that the PL model can be grounded in key principles, such as student autonomy, teacher training, connection with the environment, inclusion, and collaboration. Additionally, motivation, enjoyment, creativity, and continuous assessment are identified as essential components for effective implementation. Moreover, this model not only guides and supports teachers in the field of PL but also promotes comprehensive benefits for students at the physical, cognitive, affective, and social levels, while encouraging increased levels of physical activity (PA). Conclusions: PL is understood as a dynamic and lifelong process that should be cultivated from early childhood to encourage sustained and active participation in PA. As a pedagogical model, PL represents an effective tool to enhance student learning and well-being in PE classes. Full article

This paper presents a qualitative case study on the design, implementation, and validation of the Art Nouveau Path, a mobile augmented reality game developed to foster sustainability competences through engagement with Aveiro’s Art Nouveau built heritage. Grounded in the GreenComp framework and developed through a Design-Based Research approach, the game integrates location-based interaction, narrative storytelling, and multimodal augmented reality and multimedia content to activate key competences such as systems thinking, futures literacy, and sustainability-oriented action. The game was validated with 33 in-service schoolteachers, both through a simulation-based training workshop and a curricular review of the game. A mixed-methods strategy was used, combining structured questionnaires, open-ended reflections, and curricular review. The findings revealed strong emotional and motivational engagement, interdisciplinary relevance, and alignment with formal education goals. Teachers emphasized the game’s capacity to connect local identity with global sustainability challenges through immersive and reflective experiences. Limitations pointed to the need for enhanced pedagogical scaffolding, clearer integration into STEAM subjects, and broader accessibility across technological contexts. This study demonstrates that these games, when grounded in competence-based frameworks and inclusive design, can meaningfully support multimodal, situated learning for sustainability and offer valuable contributions to pedagogical innovation in Education for Sustainable Development. This study explores digital inequality as a socio-spatial phenomenon within the context of smart inclusion, focusing on the Regional Unit of Xanthi, Greece—a region marked by ethno-cultural diversity and pronounced urban–rural contrasts. Using a mixed-methods design, this research integrates secondary quantitative data with qualitative insights from semi-structured interviews, aiming to uncover how spatial, demographic, and cultural variables shape digital engagement. Geographic Information System (GIS) tools are employed to map disparities in internet access and ICT infrastructure, revealing significant gaps linked to geography, education, and economic status. The findings demonstrate that digital inequality is particularly acute in rural, minority, and economically marginalized communities, where limited infrastructure intersects with low digital literacy and socio-economic disadvantage. Interview data further illuminate how residents navigate exclusion, emphasizing generational divides, perceptions of technology, and place-based constraints. By bridging spatial analysis with lived experience, this study advances the conceptualization of digitally inclusive smart regions. It offers policy-relevant insights into how territorial inequality undermines the goals of smart development and proposes context-sensitive interventions to promote equitable digital participation. The case of Xanthi underscores the importance of integrating spatial justice into smart city and regional planning agendas. Full article

Media organizations are experiencing ongoing transformation, increasingly driven by the advancement of AI technologies. This development has begun to link journalists with generative systems and synthetic technologies. Although newsrooms worldwide are exploring AI adoption to improve information sourcing, news production, and distribution, a gap exists between resource-rich organizations and those with limited means. Since ChatGPT 3.5 was released on 30 November 2022, Greek media and journalists have gained the ability to use and explore AI technology. In this study, we examine the use of AI in Greek newsrooms, as well as journalists’ reflections and concerns. Through qualitative analysis, our findings indicate that the adoption and integration of these tools in Greek newsrooms is marked by the lack of formal institutional policies, leading to a predominantly self-directed and individualized use of these technologies by journalists. Greek journalists engage with AI tools both professionally and personally, often without organizational guidance or formal training. This issue may compromise the quality of journalism due to the absence of established guidelines. Consequently, individuals may produce content that is inconsistent with the media outlet’s identity or that disseminates misinformation. Age, gender, and newsroom roles do not constitute limiting factors for this “experimentation”, as survey participants showed familiarity with this technology. In addition, in some cases, the disadvantages of specific tools regarding qualitative results in Greek are inhibiting factors for further exploration and use. All these points to the need for immediate training, literacy, and ethical frameworks. Full article

Perspectives on Mail-Based Fecal Testing for Colorectal Cancer Screening in Bulgaria: A Survey of Gastroenterologists

Background: Bulgaria carries a high burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) but, at the start of this study, lacked a nationwide organized screening program. Understanding specialist views (particularly on mail-based fecal testing) is essential for effective policy development. Objective: The objective is to assess the attitudes towards, practices of, and perceived barriers to CRC screening among Bulgarian gastroenterologists, with a focus on the feasibility of mail-based fecal occult blood testing (FOBT). Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 38 gastroenterologists examined clinical use of FOBT, screening method preferences, and perceived systemic and patient-level barriers to CRC screening. Results: Among respondents, 57.89% reported using FOBT in clinical practice, and 71.05% indicated they would undergo the test themselves and recommend it to relatives. Colonoscopy was the preferred diagnostic tool for 84.21% of participants; however, the existing literature raises concerns about its feasibility for large-scale population screening. Key systemic barriers, rated on a 5-point Likert scale, included financial constraints (mean = 3.08), inadequate infrastructure (2.89), and healthcare workforce shortages (2.71). Patient-level barriers were led by low health literacy (4.13), lack of motivation (3.95), and procedural fears (3.26). A majority (84.38%) believed that mail-based FOBT would increase screening uptake, and 57.89% supported annual distribution of test kits. Nearly all respondents (97.37%) favored initiating screening at age 50. Conclusions: This study highlights strong support among Bulgarian gastroenterologists for a national CRC screening program, with particular endorsement of mail-based FOBT. Despite acknowledged systemic and population-level barriers, the findings suggest that such an approach could increase screening coverage, promote early detection, and support the strategic rollout of Bulgaria’s emerging cancer control initiatives. The environmental detriments of the growing global production and overconsumption of beef, including greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and biodiversity loss, are well-documented. However, public awareness of how dietary choices affect the environment remains limited. This study examines sustainability views on beef consumption and the potential for behavioral change as a step toward more sustainable intake levels. An observational web-based survey was conducted (n = 1367) to assess respondents’ current beef intake frequency, views on beef consumption related to planetary health, tropical deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change, and willingness to modify beef consumption behavior. Chi-square tests were used for group comparisons, and weighted average scores were applied to rank levels of resistance to reducing beef intake. Environmental concern related to beef consumption was associated with greater beef cutback intentions and lower long-term intake reduction resistance amongst beef eaters. Beef eaters who strongly agreed that global beef consumption negatively impacts the environment were considerably more likely to express intentions to reduce their long-term beef intake compared to those who strongly disagreed (94.4% vs. 19.6%). Overall, 76.6% of beef eaters indicated wanting to eat less beef or phase it out entirely (30.7% reduce, 29.4% minimize, 16.6% stop), with only 23.4% of them intending to keep their consumption unchanged. Compelling messages that help translate awareness into action, such as the #NoBeefWeek concept explored in this study, may support individuals in adopting more sustainable food choices. These cross-national findings provide evidence for a ‘knowledge–intent’ gap in sustainable diet research, with relevance for health communicators and policymakers. Future research could examine the factors and motivations influencing decisions to modify beef consumption, including the barriers to achieving sustainable consumption levels and the role of suitable alternatives in facilitating this transition. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly promoted as a means to enhance diagnostic accuracy, to streamline workflows, and to improve overall care quality in primary care. However, empirical evidence on how primary care physicians (PCPs) perceive, engage with, and emotionally respond to AI technologies in everyday clinical settings remains limited. Concerns persist regarding AI’s usability, transparency, and potential impact on professional identity, workload, and the physician–patient relationship. Methods: This qualitative study investigated the lived experiences and perceptions of 28 PCPs practicing in diverse outpatient settings across Germany. Participants were purposively sampled to ensure variation in age, practice characteristics, and digital proficiency. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, which were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and subjected to rigorous thematic analysis employing Mayring’s qualitative content analysis framework. Results: Participants demonstrated a fundamentally ambivalent stance toward AI integration in primary care. Perceived advantages included enhanced diagnostic support, relief from administrative burdens, and facilitation of preventive care. Conversely, physicians reported concerns about workflow disruption due to excessive system prompts, lack of algorithmic transparency, increased cognitive and emotional strain, and perceived threats to clinical autonomy and accountability. The implications for the physician–patient relationship were seen as double-edged: while some believed AI could foster trust through transparent use, others feared depersonalization of care. Crucial prerequisites for successful implementation included transparent and explainable systems, structured training opportunities, clinician involvement in design processes, and seamless integration into clinical routines. Conclusions: Primary care physicians’ engagement with AI is marked by cautious optimism, shaped by both perceived utility and significant concerns. Effective and ethically sound implementation requires co-design approaches that embed clinical expertise, ensure algorithmic transparency, and align AI applications with the realities of primary care workflows. Moreover, foundational AI literacy should be incorporated into undergraduate health professional curricula to equip future clinicians with the competencies necessary for responsible and confident use. These strategies are essential to safeguard professional integrity, support clinician well-being, and maintain the humanistic core of primary care. Full article

Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) is a well-established surgical intervention for the management of end-stage knee osteoarthritis. While the procedure is generally successful, postoperative rehabilitation remains a key determinant of long-term functional outcomes. Traditional rehabilitation protocols, particularly those requiring in-person clinical visits, often encounter limitations in accessibility, patient adherence, and personalization. In response, emerging sensor technologies have introduced innovative solutions to support and enhance recovery following TKA. This review provides a thematically organized synthesis of the current landscape and future directions of sensor-assisted rehabilitation in TKA. It examines four main categories of technologies: wearable sensors (e.g., IMUs, accelerometers, gyroscopes), smart implants, pressure-sensing systems, and mobile health (mHealth) platforms such as ReHub® and BPMpathway. Evidence from recent randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews demonstrates their effectiveness in tracking mobility, monitoring range of motion (ROM), detecting gait anomalies, and delivering real-time feedback to both patients and clinicians. Despite these advances, several challenges persist, including measurement accuracy in unsupervised environments, the complexity of clinical data integration, and digital literacy gaps among older adults. Nevertheless, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, and remote rehabilitation tools is driving a shift toward more adaptive and individualized care models. This paper concludes that sensor-enhanced rehabilitation is no longer a future aspiration but an active transition toward a smarter, more accessible, and patient-centered paradigm in recovery after TKA.
