With rising global temperatures and increasing sustainability demands, the need for advanced pavement solutions has never been greater. This study breaks new ground by integrating phase change materials (PCMs), including paraffin-based wax (Rubitherm RT55), hydrated salt (Climator Salt S10), and fatty acid (lauric acid), as binder modifiers within warm mix asphalt (WMA) mixtures. Moving beyond the traditional focus on binder-only modifications, this research utilizes recycled cigarette filters (CFs) as a dual-purpose fiber additive, directly reinforcing the asphalt mixture while simultaneously transforming a major urban waste stream into valuable infrastructure. The performance of the developed WMA mixture has been evaluated in terms of stiffness behavior using an Indirect Tensile Strength Modulus (ITSM) test, permanent deformation using a static creep strain test, and rutting resistance using the Hamburg wheel-track test. Laboratory tests demonstrated that the incorporation of PCMs and recycled CFs into WMA mixtures led to remarkable improvements in stiffness, deformation resistance, and rutting performance. Modified mixes consistently outperformed the control, achieving up to 15% higher stiffness after 7 days of curing, 36% lower creep strain after 4000 s, and 64% reduction in rut depth at 20,000 passes. Cost–benefit analysis and service life prediction show that, despite costing USD 0.71 more per square meter with 5 cm thickness, the modified WMA mixture delivers much greater durability and rutting resistance, extending service life to 19–29 years compared to 10–15 years for the control. This highlights the value of these modifications for durable, sustainable pavements. Full article

This study examines the effect of temperature during pyrolysis on the capacity of cedar wood-derived biochar to be employed as a sustainable electrode material for supercapacitors. Cedar wood-derived biochars were produced at different temperatures of 800 °C, 900 °C, 1000 °C and 1100 °C and fully characterized in terms of their structural, physicochemical and electrochemical properties, including specific surface area, hydrophobicity, electrical conductivity, and surface functional groups. The results indicated that the cedar wood biochar obtained through pyrolysis at 900 °C (BC900) provided optimal electrical conductivity, hydrophobicity, and porosity characteristics relative to the other cedar wood biochars produced by pyrolysis at 800 °C to 1100 °C. Specifically, when compared to commercial activated carbon (AC), BC900 provided half the specific capacitance at a current density of 1 A g−1 and indicated that there is more potential for improvement with further activation and doping. The influence of the binder (either polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) or chitosan) in combination with conductive carbon black (CB) was also examined. Electrodes fabricated with PVDF binder showed higher specific capacitance, while biochar electrodes made from CB and chitosan (BC900/CB/chitosan) showed better electrical conductivity, wettability, and good electrochemical stability with >95% capacity retention even after 10,000 cycles. The increasing demand for sustainable practices in road construction has prompted the search for environmentally friendly and cost-effective materials. This study explores the incorporation of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and Panasqueira mine waste (greywacke aggregates) as full replacements for virgin aggregates in hot mix asphalt (HMA), aligning with the objectives of UN Sustainable Development Goal 9. Three asphalt mixtures were prepared: a reference mixture (MR) with granite aggregates, and two modified mixtures (M15 and M20) with 15% and 20% RAP, respectively. All mixtures were evaluated through Marshall stability, stiffness modulus, water sensitivity, and wheel tracking tests. The results demonstrated that mixtures containing RAP and mine waste met Portuguese specifications for surface courses. Specifically, the M20 mixture showed the highest stiffness modulus, improved moisture resistance, and the best performance against permanent deformation. These improvements are attributed to the presence of stiff aged binder in RAP and the mechanical characteristics of the greywacke aggregates. Overall, the findings confirm that the combined use of RAP and mining waste provides a technically viable and sustainable alternative for asphalt pavement construction, contributing to resource efficiency and circular economy goals. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the environmentally friendly management and reutilization of electronic waste (e-waste) plastics in flexible pavement construction. The discussion begins with an overview of e-waste management challenges and outlines key recycling approaches for converting plastic waste into asphalt-compatible materials. This review then discusses the types of e-waste plastics used for asphalt modification, their incorporation methods, and compatibility challenges. Physical and chemical treatment techniques, including the use of free radical initiators, are then explored for improving dispersion and performance. Additionally, in situations where advanced pretreatment methods are not applicable due to cost, safety, or technical constraints, the application of alternative approaches, such as the use of low-cost complementary additives, is discussed as a practical solution to enhance compatibility and performance. Finally, the influence of e-waste plastics on the conventional and rheological properties of asphalt binders, as well as the performance of asphalt mixtures, is also evaluated. Findings indicate that e-waste plastics, when combined with appropriate pretreatment methods and complementary additives, can enhance workability, cold-weather cracking resistance, high-temperature anti-rutting performance, and resistance against moisture-induced damage while also offering environmental and economic benefits. This review highlights the potential of e-waste plastics as sustainable asphalt modifiers and provides insights across the full utilization pathway, from recovery to in-field performance. Because artificially cemented granular (ACG) materials employ diverse combinations of aggregates and binders—including cemented soil, low-cement-content cemented sand and gravel (LCSG), and concrete—their stress–strain responses vary widely. In LCSG, the binder dosage is typically limited to 40–80 kg/m3 and the sand–gravel skeleton is often obtained directly from on-site or nearby excavation spoil, endowing the material with a markedly lower embodied carbon footprint and strong alignment with current low-carbon, green-construction objectives. Yet, such heterogeneity makes a single material-specific constitutive model inadequate for predicting the mechanical behavior of other ACG variants, thereby constraining broader applications in dam construction and foundation reinforcement. This study systematically summarizes and analyzes the stress–strain and volumetric strain–axial strain characteristics of ACG materials under conventional triaxial conditions. Generalized hyperbolic and parabolic equations are employed to describe these two families of curves, and closed-form expressions are proposed for key mechanical indices—peak strength, elastic modulus, and shear dilation behavior. Building on generalized plasticity theory, we derive the plastic flow direction vector, loading direction vector, and plastic modulus, and develop a concise, transferable elastoplastic model suitable for the full spectrum of ACG materials. Validation against triaxial data for rock-fill materials, LCSG, and cemented coal–gangue backfill shows that the model reproduces the stress and deformation paths of each material class with high accuracy. Quantitative evaluation of the peak values indicates that the proposed constitutive model predicts peak deviatoric stress with an error of 1.36% and peak volumetric strain with an error of 3.78%. The corresponding coefficients of determination R2 between the predicted and measured values are 0.997 for peak stress and 0.987 for peak volumetric strain, demonstrating the excellent engineering accuracy of the proposed model. The results provide a unified theoretical basis for deploying ACG—particularly its low-cement, locally sourced variants—in low-carbon dam construction, foundation rehabilitation, and other sustainable civil engineering projects. This paper presents a critical and comprehensive review of the application of mining waste, specifically waste rock and tailings, in asphalt pavements, with the aim of synthesizing performance outcomes and identifying key research gaps. A systematic literature search yielded a final dataset of 41 peer-reviewed articles for detailed analysis. Bibliometric analysis indicates a notable upward trend in annual publications, reflecting growing academic and practical interest in this field. Performance-based evaluations demonstrate that mining wastes, particularly iron and copper tailings, have the potential to enhance the high-temperature performance (i.e., rutting resistance) of asphalt binders and mixtures when utilized as fillers or aggregates. However, their effects on fatigue life, low-temperature cracking, and moisture susceptibility are inconsistent, largely influenced by the physicochemical properties and dosage of the specific waste material. Despite promising results, critical knowledge gaps remain, particularly in relation to long-term durability, comprehensive environmental and economic Life-Cycle Assessments (LCA), and the inherent variability of waste materials. This review underscores the substantial potential of mining wastes as sustainable alternatives to conventional pavement materials, while emphasizing the need for further multidisciplinary research to support their broader implementation. Development and Evaluation of Selenium-Enriched Compound Fertilizers for Remediation of Mercury-Contaminated Agricultural Soil

Agricultural soil contaminated with mercury (Hg) poses a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. Although adding an appropriate amount of selenium (Se) can reduce the toxicity and mobility of Hg in soil, Se alone is prone to leaching into groundwater through soil runoff. Therefore, Se-enriched compound fertilizers were developed, and their remediation effect on Hg-contaminated agricultural soil was determined. The Se-enriched compound fertilizers were prepared by combining an organic fertilizer (vinegar residue, biochar, and potassium humate), inorganic fertilizer (urea, KH2PO4, ZnSO4, and Na2SeO3), and a binder (attapulgite and bentonite). A material proportioning experiment showed that the optimal granulation rate, organic matter content, and compressive strength were achieved when using 15% attapulgite (Formulation 1) and 10% bentonite (Formulation 2). An analysis of Se-enriched compound fertilizer particles showed that the two Se-enriched compound fertilizers complied with the standard for organic–inorganic compound fertilizers (China GB 18877-2002). Compared with the control, Formulation 1 and Formulation 2 significantly reduced the Hg content in bulk and rhizosphere soil following diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extraction by 40.1–47.3% and 53.8–56.0%, respectively. They also significantly reduced the Hg content in maize seedling roots and shoots by 26.4–29.0% and 57.3–58.7%, respectively, effectively limiting Hg uptake, transport, and enrichment. Under the Formulation 1 and Formulation 2 treatments, the total and DTPA-extractable Se contents in soil and maize seedlings were significantly increased. This study demonstrated that Se-enriched compound fertilizer effectively remediates Hg-contaminated agricultural soil and can promote the uptake of Se by maize. The results of this study are expected to positively contribute to the sustainable development of the agro-ecological environment. Full article

In the context of the growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to develop sustainable solutions for the construction industry, foamed geopolymers represent a promising alternative to traditional binders and insulation materials. This study investigates the thermal properties of novel low-emission, insulating geopolymer binders made from fly ash with diatomite, chalcedonite, and wood wool aiming to assess their potential for use in thermal insulation systems in energy-efficient buildings. The stability of the foamed geopolymer structure is also assessed. Measurements of thermal conductivity, specific heat, microstructure, density, and compressive strength are presented. The findings indicate that the selected geopolymer formulations exhibit low thermal conductivity, high heat capacity and low density, making them competitive with conventional insulation materials—mainly load-bearing ones such as aerated concrete and wood wool insulation boards. Additionally, incorporating waste-derived materials reduces the production carbon footprint. The best results are represented by the composite incorporating all three additives (diatomite, chalcedonite, and wood wool), which achieved the lowest thermal conductivity (0.10154 W/m·K), relatively low density (415 kg/m3), and high specific heat (1.529 kJ/kg·K). This study presents a cost-effective, carbon-negative construction material for affordable housing, developed entirely from locally available agricultural wastes: rice husk ash, wood ash, and rice straw—materials often problematic to dispose of in many African regions. Rice husk ash provides high amorphous silica, acting as a strong pozzolanic agent. Wood ash contributes calcium oxide and alkalis to serve as a reactive binder, while rice straw functions as a lightweight organic filler, enhancing thermal insulation and indoor climate comfort. These materials undergo natural pozzolanic reactions with water, eliminating the need for Portland cement—a major global source of anthropogenic CO2 emissions (~900 kg CO2/ton cement). This process is inherently carbon-negative, not only avoiding emissions from cement production but also capturing atmospheric CO2 during lime carbonation in the hardening phase. Field trials in Kenya confirmed the composite’s sufficient structural strength for low-cost housing, with added benefits including termite resistance and suitability for unskilled laborers. In a collaboration between the University of Tartu and Kenyatta University, a semi-automatic mixing and casting system was developed, enabling fast, low-labor construction of full-scale houses. This innovation aligns with Kenya’s Big Four development agenda and supports sustainable rural development, post-disaster reconstruction, and climate mitigation through scalable, eco-friendly building solutions. This study aims to estimate the carbon footprint and relative uncertainties for design components of conventional and geopolymer concrete. All the design components of alkaline-activated geopolymer concrete, such as fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), sodium silicate (Na2SiO3), superplasticizer, and others, are assessed to reflect the actual scenarios of the carbon footprint. The conjugate application of the life cycle assessment (LCA) tool SimPro 9.4 and @RISK Monte Carlo simulation justifies the variations in carbon emissions rather than a specific determined value for concrete binders, precursors, and filler materials. A reduction of 43% in carbon emissions has been observed by replacing cement with alkali-activated binders. However, the associative uncertainties of chemical admixtures reveal that even a slight increase may cause significant environmental damage rather than its benefit. Pearson correlations of carbon footprint with three admixtures, namely sodium silicate (r = 0.80), sodium hydroxide (r = 0.52), and superplasticizer (r = 0.19), indicate that the shift from cement to alkaline activation needs additional precaution for excessive use. Therefore, a suitable method of manufacturing chemical activators utilizing renewable energy sources may ensure long-term sustainability. Full article

The purpose of this study is to analyze how future landscape paintings using paints and binders made from the waste materials of a particular region and the background information of these artworks affect viewers’ behavioral intentions regarding social and environmental issues. First, 30 beauty evaluation items were extracted by a repertory grid analysis. Then, we asked participants to view the artworks at an exhibition in order to determine the impact of the background information behind the painting and the painting itself on participants’ imagination of the future, reconsidering themselves, social and environmental issues, and their behavioral intentions. The results showed that viewing paintings with their background information and using paints made of waste materials from a particular region improved participants’ behavioral intentions to imagine the future, to reconsider themselves, and to reconsider social and environmental issues. The elements of beauty of the paintings were found to have the potential to trigger the first step toward lifestyle change for sustainability. Full article

Glass powder, a non-degradable waste material, offers significant potential to reduce cement consumption and carbon emissions in concrete production. However, existing mix design methods for glass powder concrete (GPC) fail to systematically balance economic efficiency, environmental sustainability, and mechanical performance. To address this gap, this study proposes an AI-assisted framework integrating machine learning (ML) and Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) to achieve a sustainable GPC design. A robust database of 1154 experimental records was developed, focusing on five key predictors: cement content, water-to-binder ratio, aggregate composition, glass powder content, and curing age. Seven ML models were optimized via Bayesian tuning, with the Ensemble Tree model achieving superior accuracy (R2 = 0.959 on test data). SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analysis further elucidated the contribution mechanisms and underlying interactions of material components on GPC compressive strength. Subsequently, a MOO framework minimized unit cost and CO2 emissions while meeting compressive strength targets (15–70 MPa), solved using the NSGA-II algorithm for Pareto solutions and TOPSIS for decision-making. The Pareto-optimal solutions provide actionable guidelines for engineers to align GPC design with circular economy principles and low-carbon policies. This work advances sustainable construction practices by bridging AI-driven innovation with building materials, directly supporting global goals for waste valorization and carbon neutrality. This study investigates the effect of hemp shive granulometry on the thermal conductivity and microstructure of hemp–lime composites. Three distinct particle size fractions—fine, medium, and coarse—were characterized using high-resolution image analysis to determine geometric parameters such as Feret diameters, circularity, and elongation. Composite mixtures with varying binder-to-shive and water-to-shive ratios were prepared and compacted at a consistent level to isolate the influence of aggregate granulometry on thermal performance. Results demonstrate a clear inverse relationship between particle size and thermal conductivity, with coarse fractions reducing thermal conductivity by up to 7.6% compared to fine fractions. Composite density was also affected, decreasing with increasing particle size, confirming the impact of granulometry on pore structure and packing density. However, binder content exhibited the most significant effect on thermal conductivity, with a 20% increase observed for higher binder-to-shive ratios irrespective of shive size. The study further establishes that a 15 g sample size (~2400 particles) provides sufficient statistical accuracy for granulometric characterization using image analysis. These findings provide critical insights for optimizing hemp–lime composites for enhanced thermal insulation performance, supporting sustainable construction practices by informing material formulation and processing parameters. The modern road industry requires a more effective solution according to efficiency and minimizing environmental burden. This article discusses the use of recycled materials to modify bitumen binders within the concept of the circular economy. The main aim of this article was to create a new composite based on waste materials, including polymer waste and rubber crumb. The important element is the usage of locally available waste that has not been investigated previously as a material for asphalt modification. The prepared composition was preliminarily assessed according to chemical composition. Next, research dedicated to road application was conducted, including the following: determination of the resistance to hardening, aging under the influence of high temperature and air, as well as oxidation processes, assessment of penetration, and evaluation of the softening point. The conducted studies showed that the new composites with the addition of polymer waste and rubber crumb improve the thermal stability, elasticity, and resistance of bitumen to aging. Optimum concentrations of modifiers were determined that provide an increase in the performance characteristics of bitumen, including a decrease in the brittleness temperature and an increase in the softening temperature. The obtained results demonstrate the potential for the introduction of new composites based on recycled materials in road construction, contributing to increased environmental sustainability and economic efficiency. Correlation Between Packing Voids and Fatigue Performance in Sludge Gasification Slag-Cement-Stabilized Macadam

The fatigue resistance of cement-stabilized macadam (CSM) plays a vital role in ensuring the long-term durability of pavement structures. However, limited cementitious material (CM) content often leads to high packing voids, which significantly compromise fatigue performance. Existing studies have rarely explored the coupled mechanism between pore structure and fatigue behavior, especially in the context of solid-waste-based CMs. In this study, a cost-effective alkali-activated sludge gasification slag (ASS) was proposed as a sustainable CM substitute for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in CSM. A dual evaluation approach combining cross-sectional image analysis and fatigue loading tests was employed to reveal the effect pathway of void structure optimization on fatigue resistance. The results showed that ASS exhibited excellent cementitious reactivity, forming highly polymerized C-A-S-H/C-S-H gels that contributed to a denser microstructure and superior mechanical performance. At a 6% binder dosage, the void ratio of ASS–CSM was reduced to 30%, 3% lower than that of OPC–CSM. The 28-day unconfined compressive strength and compressive resilient modulus reached 5.7 MPa and 1183 MPa, representing improvements of 35.7% and 4.1% compared to those of OPC. Under cyclic loading, the ASS system achieved higher energy absorption and more uniform stress distribution, effectively suppressing fatigue crack initiation and propagation. Moreover, the production cost and carbon emissions of ASS were 249.52 CNY/t and 174.51 kg CO2e/t—reductions of 10.9% and 76.2% relative to those of OPC, respectively. These findings demonstrate that ASS not only improves fatigue performance through pore structure refinement but also offers significant economic and environmental advantages, providing a theoretical foundation for the large-scale application of solid-waste-based binders in pavement engineering.
