The Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process often produces parts with high surface roughness, limiting their end-use applications, especially in the biomedical field. This paper presents an experimental study on improving the surface finish of 3D-printed polycaprolactone (PCL) samples using a robotic burnishing process. A key innovation is the development of a low-cost sensorless setup using a 5-DOF manipulator, which controls the applied force by correlating a precise robotic displacement with the known stiffness of springs via Hooke’s law. Ten PCL samples were tested using two burnishing directions: 90° (perpendicular) and 0° (parallel) relative to the printing orientation. The as-printed samples showed a highly anisotropic surface. The 90° trajectory (group 1) proved to be more effective in reducing primary roughness (Ra), lowering the mean Ra from 2.11μm to 1.44μm (a mean reduction of 29.9%). In contrast, the 0° trajectory (group 2) was more effective in reducing roughness Ra, lowering its mean Ra from 0.225μm to 0.144μm (a mean reduction of 34.0%). The results demonstrate that the proposed sensorless system is a valid method for surface post-processing of FDM parts when the required forces fall below a specific threshold, ensuring a significant reduction in roughness without damaging the samples. The lower surface roughness obtained with the proposed post-processing strategy may represent a promising approach for improving the surface characteristics of FDM-fabricated polymer scaffolds intended for biomedical applications. The main objective of the present study is to reveal the palette of pigments and the other specific constituent materials as well as the techniques used by the Roman artists to create the mural paintings discovered in the ancient city of Tomis, the modern-day Constanţa, Romania’s largest seaport and a major tourist hub on the Black Sea. This paper is an archeometric study based on the physical, chemical and biological analyses of the archeological Roman mural painting fragments from the ancient city of Tomis dating from the 5th to 6th century A.D. and to our knowledge is among the very few research studies carried out so far on the ancient Roman wall painting discovered in Romania. The methods of scientific investigation employed directly on the archeological fragments, on samples taken from the fragments and on the cross-sections prepared from the samples were: optical microscopy (OM), digital microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Examination and analysis of the archeological mural fragments revealed that the painted fragments consist of ground support and successive layers of color displaying specific characteristics of the artistic technique, such as imitation of marble cladding or meticulous smoothing of the surface to achieve a glossy and compact finish. It was also found that fragments exhibit subtle variations in different colors, identified in general terms, showing seven color tones: cinnabar red, red-violet, red ochre, yellow ochre, white, gray-blue, gray-black and black. The physical–chemical and biological analyses carried out provide the diagnosis and theoretical basis for choosing an appropriate conservation methodology and the correct restoration treatment of the discovered mural painting, with a view to its museum display through exhibition and virtual reconstruction and scientific use by the setting up of a useful database for researchers or specialists in museums on Roman archeology and art. Resin-matrix ceramics are among the increasingly preferred dental biomaterials in restorative dentistry. However, these materials are continuously exposed to staining from beverages in the oral environment, and continue to present limitations in terms of long-term aesthetic performance. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of different surface finishing procedures and immersion in commonly consumed beverages on the color change (ΔE00) of four different resin-matrix ceramics (Cerasmart, Lava Ultimate, Shofu Block HC, and Vita Enamic). A total of 256 specimens were randomly assigned to mechanical polishing or glazing, then immersed in coffee, red wine, cola, or distilled water for 14 days. Data were analyzed using three-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), with Tukey and Bonferroni post hoc tests (α = 0.05). Surface finishing procedure, material type, beverage type and immersion time significantly affected ΔE00 values (p < 0.05). The highest ΔE00 values were observed at 14 days in the red wine-immersed glaze groups of Shofu Block HC (ΔE00 = 7.44 ± 0.45) and Lava Ultimate (ΔE00 = 7.24 ± 0.83). These findings suggest that surface finishing procedures and material selection play a critical role in preserving the aesthetic performance of resin-matrix ceramic restorations, and mechanical polishing may be considered a clinically favorable approach for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) restorations. This work aims to find a chemical process that modifies the surface finish of precision metal spheres to enable their use as reference elements in optical metrology. The chemical process should not substantially alter the original quality or dimensional accuracy, but it should give the spheres a matte finish, eliminating reflections. The spheres used are AISI 316L stainless steel bearing spheres, which are of low cost, high availability and great dimensional accuracy, making them suitable as reference elements if their high gloss is removed. Two procedures are tested in the research. On the one hand, different passivation acids are tested, and on the other, a chemical attack with a much more aggressive acid, aqua regia (hydrochloric acid, HCl, and nitric acid, HNO3, in a 1:3 ratio). Tests showed that none of the passivation methods sufficiently eliminated glare and reflections. However, chemical etching by immersion in aqua regia did produce a matte and homogeneous surface finish, reducing reflectivity and promoting the diffusion of incident light without loss of precision. The paper presents the tests to find the optimal exposure time to aqua regia as well as the influence of chemical etching from a dimensional and geometrical point of view, both in contact and laser sensor optical measurement. The research has considered a representative series of the chemical attack procedure to validate the repeatability of the method. Finally, it has been verified that the method is repeatable and that improvements (close to 45%) in the metrological accuracy of the laser sensor measurements are achieved when using spheres treated with aqua regia compared to original spheres. In conclusion, it has been demonstrated that the chemical attack with aqua regia is not only a valid method for generating matte surfaces suitable for optical metrology, but a process that can also be implemented at low cost and with high reproducibility. This research presents a machine learning-based vibration signal acquired from aluminum grinding experiment for potential application in smart and intelligent manufacturing. The study addresses the challenges of traditional surface finishing quality inspection by integrating vibration sensing and support vector machine (SVM). A robot manipulator lab grinding experiment consist of a four-axis DOBOT Magician with a handheld cylindrical grinding tool attached on the end-effector of the DOBOT Magician. This customized lab grinding experiment was designed to perform consistent surface finishing experiment for different aluminum work coupon and time duration. Triaxial accelerometer was used to collect the vibration signal and to investigate the most relevant vibration signal direction (x, y, and z) to the surface quality prediction of the aluminum work coupon. The vibration signal was acquired via LabVIEW and NI data acquisition (DAQ) system. The vibration features were extracted and analyzed using Python programming in Google Colab. The SVM algorithm in Python (3.11 and 3.12) is used to classify surface roughness quality into coarse, medium, and fine categories based on the extracted vibration features. Vibration feature parameters such as root mean square (RMS), Peak to RMS, Skewness, and Kurtosis were also investigated to determined which feature pairs are most critical for effective surface roughness monitoring and prediction using SVM classification. The classification model achieved high accuracy across all three vibration axes (x, y, and z), with the z-axis yielding the most consistent results. The proposed system has potential applications in real-time surface quality prediction within smart manufacturing practices aligned with Industry 4.0 principles. Full article

Jet machining is widely utilized in innovative technology industries, such as aerospace and semiconductors, due to its minimal thermal damage. However, with the increasingly stringent surface quality requirements of modern manufacturing, conventional jet technologies face limitations in achieving ultra-precision surface finishing and high material removal rates. To address these challenges and adapt to this new situation, multi-energy field-assisted jet machining has emerged as a novel concept, integrating laser, ultrasonic, and magnetic fields. This paper reviews the scientific development and recent advancements of these hybrid technologies within the field of ultra-precision machining. The physical interaction mechanisms between the auxiliary energy fields and the waterjet are elucidated. Specifically, the effects of laser thermal softening, ultrasonic cavitation, and magnetic focusing on new mechanisms of material removal and surface topography are systematically analyzed. The process capabilities and applications of each method are evaluated. Finally, current technical challenges are identified, and the future trends in ultra-precision jet machining are discussed. Plunge shaving is a widely used finishing process for high-precision gears due to its high productivity and cost-effectiveness. However, manufacturing the plunge-shaving cutter itself remains challenging, particularly for modified tooth profiles. Because the theoretical cutter flank exhibits a hyperboloid-like geometry in the lead direction, conventional disk-wheel grinding tends to introduce systematic twist-like topographic bias. To overcome this limitation, a comprehensive mathematical framework is developed for the generative grinding of plunge-shaving cutters using an involute-helicoid grinding worm. Based on envelope theory and homogeneous coordinate transformations, the theoretical cutter surface is first derived, followed by the establishment of a complete kinematic grinding model. A linear least-squares optimization algorithm is then formulated to determine the optimal center-distance compensation parameter for minimizing the normal deviation between the generated and theoretical surfaces. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed method significantly suppresses twist-related topographic errors. In a benchmark moderate-helix case, the maximum residual deviation is controlled to approximately 2 µm. For a more demanding large-helix configuration, a two-level optimization strategy—combining machine-setting compensation and grinding-worm helix-angle adjustment—reduces the peak deviation from about 5.5 µm to 4.7 µm, corresponding to an improvement of approximately 15%. This confirms that worm-geometry tuning provides an additional, effective degree of freedom for high-helix cutter applications. Full article

Scalable halogen-free flame-retardant textile finishes remain challenging, particularly regarding laundering durability and industrially viable processing. Here, two phytate flame retardants, poly(vinylammonium) phytate (PVAmPA, partly bio-based) and chitosan phytate (ChiPA, fully bio-based), were applied to cotton (CO), polyester (PET), and a CO/PET blend by a single-step, binder-assisted coating. Both coatings suppressed surface flaming in ISO 15025 on all substrates. Although laundering at 40 °C caused systematically higher wash-off for ChiPA, surface flame suppression was retained for most coated fabrics, with the exception of ChiPA on CO and PVAmPA on PET. Thermogravimetric analysis showed earlier decomposition and increased residue formation for both systems, with the residue at 700 °C increasing from 4.5% to 18.2% for CO_PVAmPA and from 4.5% to 15.2% for CO_ChiPA. In microscale combustion calorimetry, PVAmPA reduced the heat release capacity (HRC) from 251 to 168 J/(g·K) for CO/PET, whereas ChiPA showed its strongest effect on PET, reducing HRC from 413 to 222 J/(g·K). Gas-phase analyses indicated enhanced water release for both coatings and additional NH3 evolution for PVAmPA. Overall, binder-assisted, single-step phytate coatings provide a scalable route to halogen-free flame retardancy, with PVAmPA showing the most robust overall durability and ChiPA offering a fully bio-based alternative with strong substrate-dependent performance. The shift toward lightweight powertrain architectures necessitates a detailed characterization of polymer gears to verify their efficiency and durability. This study investigated the effectiveness of non-contact structured-light 3D scanning for evaluating the surface topography and dimensional tolerance quality of polymer gears produced via distinct manufacturing technologies. A structured-light 3D scanner was used to capture dense point clouds (exceeding 6 million points) of gears produced by three methods: conventional hobbing (POM-C), Material Extrusion (MEX) with carbon fiber reinforcement, and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). The manufactured parts were compared against the nominal Computer Aided Design (CAD) models to evaluate their geometrical deviations in accordance with DIN 3961 and surface roughness parameters per ISO 25178. The experimental results revealed a consistent ranking of manufacturing quality. The conventionally hobbed POM-C gear exhibited superior precision, achieving DIN quality grades of Q9–Q10 and the smoothest surface finish (Sa = 5.0 µm). Among additive manufacturing techniques, SLS-printed PA 12 showed intermediate quality (Q11, Sa = 12 µm), whereas MEX-printed PPS-CF exhibited significant deviations (exceeding Q12) and the highest surface irregularity (Sa = 25 µm) due to stair-stepping effects. These findings indicate that while additive manufacturing offers geometric flexibility, conventional hobbing retains a decisive advantage in dimensional precision. The optical scanning methodology demonstrated here constitutes an efficient metrological framework for gear quality control, with potential applications extending to the quality assurance of additively manufactured adaptive fixtures and assembly tooling, including automotive assembly operations. To address rapid tool wear and unstable hole surface quality during roughing and semi-finishing operations using indexable shallow-hole drills, an optimization study on the spatial mounting posture of the insert is conducted, aiming to improve tool life and machined surface quality. Considering that tool life and surface quality are significantly influenced by cutting force and cutting temperature, radial cutting force and cutting temperature are selected as the multi-objective optimization criteria. A mapping model between the insert mounting posture parameters and cutting performance metrics is established. An improved LO-NSGA-II algorithm is employed to perform multi-objective optimization, yielding a Pareto-optimal solution set, and the entropy weighted-TOPSIS method is subsequently applied to determine the optimal insert mounting posture. Experimental results demonstrate that the optimized spatial mounting posture significantly enhances the overall cutting performance of the tool. Compared with the non-optimized tool, the optimized configuration exhibits a significant extension in tool life and a notable improvement in machined hole surface quality. This study provides an effective methodology for the structural optimization design of indexable shallow-hole drills. Full article

This paper investigates the AWJ machinability of Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis/carbon nanotube (CNT) fiber/epoxy-based hybrid composites by analyzing key machinability metrics such as kerf width (KW), material removal rate (MRR), and surface roughness (Ra). Various process parameters including CNT weight percentage, CNT diameter, stand-off distance, and traverse speed have been varied to optimize the machining performance. Experimental analysis suggested that increasing the CNT weight percentage significantly enhanced material hardness, thereby reducing both the MRR and surface roughness. Moreover, adjusting the stand-off distance and traverse speed further improved the machinability of the composite. ANOVA results highlighted that CNT weight percentage was a significant factor, accounting for 94.17% of the variation in MRR and 93.72% of the variation in surface finish, while the stand-off distance influenced 87.03% of the variation in kerf width. Additionally, response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to develop predictive models that estimated KW, MRR, and Ra with error rates of 2.95%, 2.23%, and 5.65%, respectively. The present study investigates the surface integrity and flank wear of uncoated cermet inserts during dry turning of AISI 304 stainless steel. Three-dimensional metrology techniques were employed to assess both surface roughness and cutting-tool flank wear. Cutting speed and feed rate were the process parameters varied in the experiments. Both parameters exhibited a significant influence on the final surface quality. Specifically, increasing the cutting speed resulted in a deterioration of the surface finish under the evaluated conditions. Considering an average flank wear (VBB) of 0.1 mm as the tool life criterion, tool lives of 15 min and 9 min were achieved at cutting speeds of 120 m/min (lowest level) and 150 m/min (highest level), respectively. At lower cutting speeds, abrasive wear and adhesion were the predominant wear mechanisms, whereas chipping and diffusion became more pronounced at the higher cutting speed. The dry turning of AISI 304 stainless steel with uncoated cermet inserts proved viable in terms of sustainability and surface integrity; however, effective chip evacuation remains a critical concern. (1) Purpose: To compare the fabrication accuracy, internal fit, and marginal adaptation of three-unit definitive resin fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) produced by subtractive milling and additive manufacturing. (2) Materials and Methods: A typodont mandible was prepared for a three-unit FDP, with full crown preparations on teeth mandibular left canine and mandibular left second premolar featuring 1 mm chamfer finish lines. The FDP was designed with a 16 mm2 connector and a 100 µm cement gap. Two milling materials (Ambarino High-Class, IPS e.max CAD) and two experimental 3D printing hybrid resins (3D-1, 3D-2) were used. All restorations were scanned using an intraoral scanner and compared to the original STL using reverse engineering software for surface trueness and deviation analysis. The internal fit was evaluated using the triple-scan method, while marginal fit was assessed via micro-CT imaging. Statistical analysis was conducted using one-way ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis tests (α = 0.05). (3) Results: Milled groups demonstrated a lower prevalence of external, marginal, and overall surface deviations (p < 0.001), while 3D-1 exhibited comparable deviations within the internal region with M-E (p = 0.067). Milled groups had average gap values that were similar to 3D-1 (p > 0.08), but significantly lower than 3D-2 (p < 0.002). In marginal adaptation evaluated by micro-CT, the M-A and M-E groups provided significantly lower gaps, while the 3D-1 and 3D-2 groups exhibited wider marginal and axial gaps. (4) Conclusions: These results indicate that while milling remains a more reliable manufacturing method for achieving external and marginal precision, position 3D-1 is a compelling, chairside alternative to milling. Background/Objectives: Lithium disilicate (LD) veneers are widely used for minimally invasive anterior rehabilitation because of their favorable optical and mechanical properties. Fully digital workflows have been proposed as alternatives to conventional milling. These approaches combine computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) with 3D-printed burn-out patterns and subsequent heat pressing of LD ingots. However, clinical documentation of multi-unit anterior cases fabricated exclusively through this additive-plus-pressing route remains scarce. This case report aims to describe a fully digital additive-plus-pressing workflow for four maxillary anterior LD veneers and to report 48-month clinical outcomes. Case Presentation: A 52-year-old female presented with esthetic concerns involving the maxillary central and lateral incisors (teeth 11, 12, 21, and 22). After clinical and radiographic evaluation, a minimally invasive veneer-based rehabilitation was planned. Preparations were performed under magnification, and immediate dentin sealing was applied. Digital impressions were obtained with an intraoral scanner, and veneers were designed using CAD software(Exocad DentalDB 3.0 Galway (Exocad GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany). Castable resin patterns were 3D-printed, invested, and heat-pressed using LD ingots, followed by finishing and glazing. Adhesive cementation was performed under rubber dam isolation after hydrofluoric acid etching and silanization of the intaglio surfaces and conditioning of the tooth substrates according to the adhesive protocol, using a dual-cure resin cement. At the 48-month follow-up, all veneers remained intact, with clinically acceptable marginal adaptation, stable color and surface gloss, and no signs of secondary caries or marginal discoloration. The patient reported sustained esthetic satisfaction and comfortable function without postoperative sensitivity. Conclusions: This single-patient report suggests that a fully digital additive-plus-pressing workflow may be clinically viable for high-demand anterior LD veneers, providing favorable medium-term esthetics and patient-centered outcomes with no technical or biological complications. The reproducible protocol described may facilitate the integration of 3D printing and heat pressing into digital veneer rehabilitation and supports further controlled clinical investigations. GH3536 superalloy is widely used in the high-temperature components of aerospace applications for its excellent high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance. However, under such a harsh environment, surface defects can make the superalloy prone to corrosion and fatigue fractures. Therefore, it is important to eliminate surface defects through polishing. However, the existing polishing methods usually suffer from some issues such as surface integrity damage, low efficiency, and poor environmental sustainability. More importantly, these methods fail to account for the requirement of surface roughness below 0.05 μm in some high-precision aerospace components. Herein, the plasma electrolytic polishing (PEP) of GH3536 superalloy is systematically investigated and optimized through single-factor experiments and response surface methodology (RSM). A minimum surface roughness Ra of 0.044 μm with a mirror-like surface was achieved at a voltage of 303.8 V, electrolyte temperature of 66.2 °C, polishing time of 5 min, and submersion depth of 7.5 cm. At the same optimized condition, the material removal rate was 59.12 mg·min−1. After polishing, the surface composition of GH3536 superalloy varied negligibly, while its corrosion resistance improved markedly, with a 53.72% increase in polarization resistance and a 43.46% decrease in corrosion current density. Meanwhile, the microhardness slightly decreased due to the removal of the work-hardened layer and the compressive residual stress exhibited a more uniform distribution across the surface, contributing to improved near-surface mechanical stability. This study establishes an optimized PEP parameter for improving the surface quality of GH3536 superalloy, offering a practical method for the precision finishing of aerospace-grade superalloy components.
