Remote Visualization and Optimization of Fluid Dynamics Using Mixed Reality

This study presents an innovative pipeline for processing, compressing, and remotely visualizing large-scale numerical simulations of fluid dynamics in a virtual wind tunnel (VWT), leveraging virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) for enhanced analysis and high-end visualization. The workflow addresses the challenges of handling massive databases generated using Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) while maintaining visual fidelity and ensuring efficient rendering for user interaction. Fully immersive visualization of supersonic (Mach number 2.86) spatially developing turbulent boundary layers (SDTBLs) over strong concave and convex curvatures was achieved. The comprehensive DNS data provides insights on the transport phenomena inside turbulent boundary layers under strong deceleration or an Adverse Pressure Gradient (APG) caused by concave walls as well as strong acceleration or a Favorable Pressure Gradient (FPG) caused by convex walls under different wall thermal conditions (i.e., Cold, Adiabatic, and Hot walls). The process begins with a .vts file input from a DNS, which is visualized using ParaView software. These visualizations, representing different fluid behaviors based on a DNS with a high spatial/temporal resolution and employing millions of “numerical sensors”, are treated as individual time frames and exported in GL Transmission Format (GLTF), which is a widely used open-source file format designed for efficient transmission and loading of 3D scenes. To support the workflow, optimized Extract–Transform–Load (ETL) techniques were implemented for high-throughput data handling. Conversion of exported Graphics Library Transmission Format (GLTF) files into Graphics Library Transmission Format Binary files (typically referred to as GLB) reduced the storage by 25% and improved the load latency by 60%. This research uses Unity’s Profile Analyzer and Memory Profiler to identify performance limitations during contour rendering, focusing on the GPU and CPU efficiency. Further, immersive VR/AR analytics are achieved by connecting the processed outputs to Unity engine software and Microsoft HoloLens Gen 2 via Azure Remote Rendering cloud services, enabling real-time exploration of fluid behavior in mixed-reality environments. This pipeline constitutes a significant advancement in the scientific visualization of fluid dynamics, particularly when applied to datasets comprising hundreds of high-resolution frames. Moreover, the methodologies and insights gleaned from this approach are highly transferable, offering potential applications across various other scientific and engineering disciplines. Full article

Scramjet operation requires a comprehensive understanding of the internal flowfield, encompassing fuel–air mixing and combustion. This study investigates transient flow and flame development within a HIFiRE-2 scramjet engine combustor, which features two opposing cavities and dual sets of fuel injectors—the upstream (primary) and downstream (secondary) injectors. These cavities function as flameholders, creating circulating flows with elevated temperatures and pressures. Shock waves form both ahead of fuel plumes and at the diverging and converging sections of the flowpath. Special attention is given to the interactions among these shock waves and the shear layers along the supersonic core flow as the system progresses towards a quasi-steady state. Driven by increased backpressure, bow shocks and disturbances induced by the normal, secondary fuel injection and the inclined, primary fuel injection move upstream, amplifying the cavity pressure. These shocks generate adverse pressure gradients, causing near-wall flow separation adjacent to both injector sets, which enhances the penetration and dispersion of fuel plumes. Once a quasi-steady state is achieved, a feedback loop is established between dynamic wave motions and combustion processes, resulting in sustained entrainment of reactive mixtures into the cavities. This mechanism facilitates stable combustion in the cavities and near-wall separation zones. Full article

To accommodate the extreme thermodynamic effects and erosion damage in throttling equipment for ultra-high-pressure natural gas wells (175 MPa), a coupled multiphase flow erosion numerical model for nozzles was established. This model incorporates a real gas compressibility factor correction and is based on the renormalized k-ε RNG (Renormalization Group k-epsilon model, a turbulence model that simulates the effects of vortices and rotation in the mean flow by modifying turbulent viscosity) turbulence model and the Discrete Phase Model (DPM, a multiphase flow model based on the Eulerian–Lagrangian framework). The study revealed that the nozzle flow characteristics follow an equal-percentage nonlinear regulation pattern. Choked flow occurs at the throttling orifice throat due to supersonic velocity (Ma ≈ 3.5), resulting in a mass flow rate governed solely by the upstream total pressure. The Joule–Thomson effect induces a drastic temperature drop of 273 K. The outlet temperature drops below the critical temperature for methane hydrate phase transition, thereby presenting a substantial risk of hydrate formation and ice blockage in the downstream outlet segment. Erosion analysis indicates that particles accumulate in the 180° backside region of the cage sleeve under the influence of secondary flow. At a 30% opening, micro-jet impact causes the maximum erosion rate to surge to 3.47 kg/(m2·s), while a minimum erosion rate is observed at a 50% opening. Across all opening levels, the maximum erosion rate consistently concentrates on the oblique section of the plunger front. Results demonstrate that removing the front chamfer of the plunger effectively improves the internal erosion profile. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the reliability design and risk prevention of surface equipment in deep ultra-high-pressure gas wells. Full article

This work analyzes the aero-elastic oscillations of cantilever beams reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Four different distributions of single-walled CNTs are assumed as the reinforcing phase, in the thickness direction of the polymeric matrix. A modified third-order piston theory is used as an accurate tool to model the supersonic air flow, rather than a first-order piston theory. The nonlinear dynamic equation governing the problem accounts for Von Kármán-type nonlinearities, and it is derived from Hamilton’s principle. Then, the Galerkin decomposition technique is adopted to discretize the nonlinear partial differential equation into a nonlinear ordinary differential equation. This is solved analytically according to a multiple time scale method. A comprehensive parametric analysis was conducted to assess the influence of CNT volume fraction, beam slenderness, Mach number, and thickness ratio on the fundamental frequency and lateral dynamic deflection. Results indicate that FG-X reinforcement yields the highest frequency response and lateral deflection, followed by UD and FG-A patterns, whereas FG-O consistently exhibits the lowest performance metrics. An increase in CNT volume fraction and a reduction in slenderness ratio enhance the system’s stiffness and frequency response up to a critical threshold, beyond which a damped beating phenomenon emerges. Moreover, higher Mach numbers and greater thickness ratios significantly amplify both frequency response and lateral deflections, although damping rates tend to decrease. These findings provide valuable insights into the optimization of CNTR composite structures for advanced aeroelastic applications under supersonic conditions, as useful for many engineering applications. The interaction between a shock wave and a boundary layer promotes corner separation and prevents performance enhancement in a supersonic compressor cascade. Different vortex generator (VG) designs are presented to control corner separation in a supersonic compressor cascade, including endwall VGs (EVG), suction surface VGs (SVG), and combined endwall and suction surface VGs (E-SVGs). It is demonstrated that EVG and coupled E-SVGs reduce losses in the supersonic compressor cascade. For an optimal EVG, the total loss is reduced by 24.6% and the endwall loss is reduced by 33.6%. The coupled E-SVG better controls corner separation and reduces endwall losses by 56.9%. The suppression mechanism is that vortices alter the direction of the separated flow, allowing it to overcome the chordwise pressure gradient. Moreover, the VGs change the shock structure near the endwall. For the EVG, clockwise vortices are effective in controlling corner separation due to their minor effect on the shock structure near the endwall. However, anticlockwise vortices are not suitable for controlling corner separation in the supersonic compressor because they increase the shock strength induced by the VG. The control mechanism of the coupled E-SVG on corner separation is also discussed. Full article

Effect of Quasi-Static Door Operation on Shear Layer Bifurcations in Supersonic Cavities

Span-wise homogeneous supersonic cavity flows display complicated structures due to shear layer breakdown, flow acoustic resonance, and even non-linear hydrodynamic-acoustic interactions. In practical applications, such as aircraft bays, the cavity is of finite width and has doors, both of which introduce distinctive phenomena that couple with the shear layer at the cavity lip, further modulating shear layer bifurcations and tonal mechanisms. In particular, asymmetric states manifest as ‘tornado’ vortices with significant practical consequences on the design and operation. Both inward- and outward-facing leading-wedge doors, resulting in leading edge shocks directed into and away from the cavity, are examined at select opening angles ranging from 22.5° to 90° (fully open) at Mach 1.6. The computational approach utilizes the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations with a one-equation model and is augmented by experimental observations of cavity floor pressure and surface oil-flow patterns. For the no-doors configuration, the asymmetric results are consistent with a long-time series DDES simulation, previously validated with two experimental databases. When fully open, outer wedge doors (OWD) yield an asymmetric flow, while inner wedge doors (IWD) display only mildly asymmetric behavior. At lower door angles (partially closed cavity), both types of doors display a successive bifurcation of the shear layer, ultimately resulting in a symmetric flow. IWD tend to promote symmetry for all angles observed, with the shear layer experiencing a pitchfork bifurcation at the ‘critical angle’ (67.5°). This is also true for the OWD at the ‘critical angle’ (45°), though an entirely different symmetric flow field is established. The first observation of pitchfork bifurcations (‘critical angle’) for the IWD is at 67.5° and for the OWD, 45°, complementing experimental observations. The back wall signature of the bifurcated shear layer (impingement preference) was found to be indicative of the 3D cavity dynamics and may be used to establish a correspondence between 3D cavity dynamics and the shear layer. Below the critical angle, the symmetric flow field is comprised of counter-rotating vortex pairs at the front and back wall corners. The existence of a critical angle and the process of door opening versus closing indicate the possibility of hysteresis, a preliminary discussion of which is presented. Full article

Three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations have been performed to investigate the complex flow features and stripping of fluid materials from a cylindrical water drop at the late-stage in a Shock Liquid Drop Interaction (SLDI) process when the drop’s downstream end experiences compression after it is impacted by a supersonic shock wave (Ma = 1.47). The drop trajectory/breakup has been simulated using a Lagrangian model and the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) approach has been employed for simulating the ambient airflow. The Kelvin–Helmholtz Rayleigh–Taylor (KHRT) breakup model has been used to capture the liquid drop fragmentation process and a coupled level-set volume of fluid (CLSVOF) method has been applied to investigate the topological transformations at the air/water interface. The predicted changes of the drop length/width/area with time have been compared against experimental measurements, and a very good agreement has been obtained. The complex flow features and the qualitative characteristics of the material stripping process in the compression phase, as well as disintegration and flattening of the drop are analyzed via comprehensive flow visualization. Characteristics of the drop distortion and fragmentation in the stripping breakup mode, and the development of turbulence at the later stage of the shock drop interaction process are also examined. Finally, this study investigated the effect of increasing Ma on the breakup of a water drop by shear stripping. The results show that the shed fluid materials and micro-drops are spread over a narrower distribution as Ma increases. It illustrates that the flattened area bounded by the downstream separation points experienced less compression, and the liquid sheet suffered a slower growth. Full article

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has aided the development, design, and analysis of hypersonic airbreathing propulsion technologies, such as scramjets. The complex flow field in a scramjet isolator has been the subject of intense interest and study for several decades. Many features of this flow field also occur in supersonic wind-tunnel nozzles and diffusers. Computational analysis of these topics has frequently provided immense insight into the actual functionality and performance. Research presented in this work supports scientific investigation and understanding of a less-researched topic, which is shock–shock interference and interaction with the boundary layer in supersonic internal flows, as well as the passive control of its adverse effects to prevent the onset of unstart in a scramjet isolator. This computational investigation is conducted on a backpressured isolator and a modified three-dimensional shock-tube to represent a scramjet isolator with ram effects provided by high-pressure gas and high-speed flow provided by a supersonic inflow. Computational results for the backpressured isolator have been validated against available measured time-averaged wall pressure data. The modified shock-tube provided an opportunity to study the shock–shock interference and shock–boundary-layer interaction effects that would occur in a scramjet isolator or a ram-accelerator when the high-speed flow from the inlet interacted with the shock produced due to the combustor pressure traveling and meeting in the isolator. An assessment of wall cooling effects on these phenomena is presented for both the backpressured isolator and the modified shock-tube. Full article

This study investigates supersonic flow within a nozzle under low-pressure conditions at the continuum mechanics boundary. This phenomenon is commonly encountered in applications such as the differentially pumped chamber of an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM), which employs an aperture to separate two regions with a great pressure gradient. The nozzle geometry and flow control in this region can significantly influence the scattering and loss of the primary electron beam traversing the differentially pumped chamber and aperture. To this end, an experimental chamber was designed to explore aspects of this low-pressure regime, characterized by a varying ratio of inertial to viscous forces. The initial experimental results obtained using pressure sensors from the fabricated experimental chamber were utilized to refine the Ansys Fluent simulation setup, and in this combined approach, initial analyses of supersonic flow and shock waves in low-pressure environments were conducted. The refined Ansys Fluent system demonstrated a very good correspondence with the experimental findings. Subsequently, an analysis of the influence of surface roughness on the resulting flow behavior in low-pressure conditions was performed on this refined model using the refined CFD model. Based on the obtained results, a comparison of the influence of nozzle roughness on the resulting electron beam scattering was conducted for selected low-pressure variants relevant to the operational conditions of the Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM). The influence of roughness at elevated working pressures within the ESEM operating regime on reduced electron beam scattering has been demonstrated. At lower pressure values within the ESEM operating regime, this influence is significantly diminished. Full article

The metal powder quality of a supersonic gas atomizer can vastly differ depending on the operating gas variables. This study investigates the high-pressure gas atomization (HPGA) process using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The simulation results were validated against experimental data, revealing a series of shock waves that play a crucial role in the gas flow field. A full factorial design of experiments (DOE) was used to optimize inlet gas pressure and temperature. The optimized parameters were found to directly influence droplet breakup and particle size. It was observed that higher inlet gas pressures and temperatures enhance atomization efficiency and produce finer powders, with pressure having a more dominant effect than temperature. The findings provide valuable insights into the gas dynamics of HPGA and support process optimization for producing high-quality metal powders. Full article

To commercialize supersonic and hypersonic passenger aircraft and reusable spaceplanes, we are developing a small-scale supersonic flight experiment vehicle as a flying testbed for technical demonstrations in high-speed flight environments. This experiment vehicle is equipped with a fuel tank and an oxidizer tank, and the propellants inside the tanks slosh due to changes in acceleration during flight. In this situation, there is a risk of gas entrainment during liquid discharge, which could potentially cause an engine malfunction. To avoid such a situation, we considered installing a propellant management device (PMD) inside the tank to suppress the gas entrainment. In this study, a capillary type PMD with a screen channel structure, commonly used in satellites featuring no moving parts, was adopted due to its applicability to a wide acceleration range. The PMD was designed with a structure featuring cylindrical mesh screen nozzles installed at the top and bottom of a cylindrical tank. A one-dimensional flow analysis model was developed taking into account factors such as the pressure loss across the mesh screens and the flow loss within the mesh screen nozzles, which enabled the identification of conditions under which gas entrainment occurred. In this analytical model, separate formulations were developed using Hartwig’s and Ingmanson’s formulas for evaluating the flow losses through the mesh screens. Furthermore, by applying the flow analysis model, the specifications of the mesh screens as key parameters of the PMD, together with the nozzle diameter and nozzle length, were selected. Moreover, we fabricated prototype PMDs with each nozzle and conducted visualization tests using a transparent tank. The tests were conducted under static conditions, where a gravitational acceleration acted downward, and the effects of the cylindrical mesh screen length and discharge flow rate on the free surface height at which gas entrainment occurred were investigated. This experiment demonstrated the effectiveness of the propellant acquisition mechanism of the present PMD. The height of the free surface was also compared with the experimental and analytical results, and it was shown that the results obtained by using Ingmanson’s formula for pressure loss through the screen mesh were closer to the experimental results. These findings demonstrated the validity of the one-dimensional flow analysis model. Full article

It is also shown that adjoint variables can have discontinuities across characteristics, and the corresponding jump conditions are obtained. It is shown how this information can be used to obtain exact predictions for the adjoint variables, particularly for supersonic flows. The approach is illustrated by the analysis of supersonic flow past a double-wedge airfoil, for which an analytic adjoint solution is obtained in the near-wall region. The solution is zero downstream of the airfoil and piecewise constant around it except across the expansion fan, where the adjoint variables change smoothly while remaining constant along each Mach wave within the fan. The present paper illustrates the design space exploration of a supersonic mixed-flow turbofan engine for civil applications. The aircraft platform selected is a 10-passenger business jet, cruising at Mach 1.6. To overcome noise limitations at take-off, an alternative engine architecture with additional exhaust nozzle variability, to overcome the take-off noise limit, is proposed. The fully variable area nozzle configuration allows for an overall 15% weight reduction against a partially variable area nozzle architecture. In terms of overall aircraft mission fuel burn, it shows an 8% mission fuel burn reduction against the partially variable area nozzle architecture, with a final fuel efficiency of 11.4 pax-mile/us gallon. This paper provides shadowgraphy and molecular tagging velocimetry (MTV) acquisition results and validates a computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) simulation for an underexpanded supersonic gas jet in a plenum pointed toward a wall with an aligned converging pipe outlet. Flow configurations of this type are encountered in pulse-jet systems for online industrial gas filter regeneration. Although previous CFD validation efforts for pulse-jet systems have relied on static pressure measurements, this work expands the validation data using high-resolution flow visualization and velocimetry techniques. Simulations were performed with an axisymmetric two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes model and are in close agreement with the shadowgraphy and MTV data, including the description of Mach disks, barrel shocks, and reflected shocks in the underexpanded jet. The CFD model was finally applied to study the role of the converging tube downstream of the jet. Full article

Shockwaves induce considerable flow separation loss; it is essential to reduce this using the flow control method. In this manuscript, a method for suppressing flow separation in turbomachinery through a constant adverse-pressure gradient was investigated. The first-passage shock was split into a compression wave system of the vane suction surface. The aim of this was to reduce loss from shockwave/boundary layer interactions (SWBLIs). This method promotes the performance parameters of the supersonic compressor cascade. The investigation targets were a baseline cascade and the improved system. Both cascades were numerically studied with the aid of the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) method. The simulation results of the baseline cascade were also validated through experimentation, and a further physical flow analysis of the two cascades was conducted. The results show that the first-passage shockwave was a foot above the initial suction surface, with a weaker incident shock along with a clustering of the compression wave corresponding to the modified cascade. It was also concluded that the first-passage shockwave foot of the baseline cascade was replaced with a weak incident shock, and a series of compression waves emanated from the adopted negative-curvature profile. The shock-induced boundary layer separation bubble disappeared, and much smaller boundary layer shape factors over the SWBLI region were obtained for the improved cascade compared to the baseline cascade. This improvement led to a high level of stability in the boundary layer state. Sensitivity analyses were performed through different simulations on both cascades, unveiling that the loss in total pressure was lower in the case of the updated cascade as compared to the baseline.
