Objective: To analyze the association between physical activity, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and perceived barriers to physical activity with the risk of symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress in Chilean adolescents. Method: A quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational study was conducted with a sample of 351 secondary school students (mean age = 15.75 ± 1.47 years) from several educational institutions in the south-central region of Chile. Validated instruments were used to assess physical activity (PAQ-A), symptoms of mental health (DASS-21), HRQoL (Kidscreen-52), and the short scale of barriers to physical activity. For exploratory purposes, mental health outcomes were dichotomized based on standard cut-off scores, and binary logistic regression models were estimated to identify associated factors. Results: Based on the binary categorization, a substantial proportion of students exceeded the risk thresholds for depressive (54.4%), anxiety (63%), and stress symptoms (42.2%). Across models, lower physical activity levels, reduced autonomy and weaker relationships with parents, and barriers related to self-concept and motivation were consistently associated with higher mental health risk. Additionally, passive commuting and the perceived school environment emerged as specific predictors of stress and depression risk, respectively. Conclusions: These findings suggest that individual and contextual factors linked to lifestyle behaviors and perceived social support may play a critical role in adolescent mental health, and could represent key targets for school-based interventions. Background: Nursing students usually face excessive academic and clinical demands that negatively impact their sleep quality. Physical activity (PA) has been proposed to enhance sleep, yet few investigations have focused on this correlation within the Saudi environment. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between PA and sleep quality in Saudi nursing students. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among a sample of 554 nursing students from different universities in Saudi Arabia. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to collect data. Snowball sampling was used to recruit the participants through social media. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and inferential tests were employed for the analysis. Results: Most participants were female (85.1%) and aged 18–34 years (95.5%). LPA levels were reported by 59.6% of students, and only 8.2% engaged in VPA. The majority (91%) reported poor sleep duration (<5 h), and 57.4% had poor sleep efficiency. Overall, 86.7% of students experienced poor sleep quality. Gender and GPA were significantly associated with both PA and sleep quality. Female students and those with lower GPAs were more likely to report LPA and poor sleep. Marital status was also associated with higher levels of VPA. No significant associations were found with age, academic year, region, income, or parental education. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between PA and sleep quality (r = 0.192, p < 0.001), suggesting that increased PA is modestly associated with better sleep. Conclusion: The research shows a high rate of poor sleep and low physical activity in nursing students, indicating an alarming health trend. Although PA was linked significantly to better sleep, the modest strength indicates the necessity for multi-component interventions. Structured PA programs and sleep hygiene education should be incorporated into nursing curricula by universities to foster students’ well-being and academic performance. Full article

Background: Hispanic college students face high stress, which may increase their risk for chronic stress-related health issues. Effective and accessible stress management strategies for this population remain limited. Objective: This pilot study filled a gap by studying the effects of psychological stress on diet and physical activity habits and evaluating the impact of moderate-intensity physical exercise (MIPE) and yoga interventions on chronic psychological stress and acute stress responses among Hispanic college students. Methods: A total of 18 Hispanic college students participated in a 6-week intervention consisting of either MIPE or yoga, conducted twice weekly. Anthropometric measurements and lifestyle data were collected at both pre- and post-intervention timepoints. Psychological stress was evaluated using the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), morning salivary cortisol concentrations, and the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Results: Before the intervention, both perceived stress scores and morning salivary cortisol concentrations were positively correlated with the frequency of sweetened beverage intake and negatively correlated with attitudes toward exercise. Psychological stress was not significantly reduced after MIPE or yoga interventions. The salivary cortisol response to TSST was significantly improved after the yoga intervention. Conclusions: Although this pilot exploratory study suggests that short-term yoga may have beneficial effects in managing acute stress response in Hispanic college students, the efficacy of the interventions needs to be tested and replicated in a fully powered trial. According to the WHO, health problems in Somalia are reported to be at an alarming level today and in the future. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between healthy lifestyle behaviours and the levels of health literacy of university students receiving health sciences education in Mogadishu, Somalia. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in April 2024 in a university delivering education in Turkish in Mogadishu. The study sample comprised 219 health sciences students. The data collection tools used were a demographic data form, the Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours Scale II (HLBS-II) and the Turkish version of the European Health Literacy Scale (HLS-EU-TR). Results: A total of 219 students participated, with 86.3% identifying as female and 13.7% as male, and the average age was 20.91 ± 2.2 years. The mean of the total scores obtained for the HLBS II was found to be 127.54 ± 23.46 and the mean of the total scores obtained for HLS-EU-TR was 30.33 ± 8.17, while scores across all dimensions of the HLS-EU-TR indicated a problematic−borderline level. Analysis showed that with each advancing year of study, there was a statistically significant increase in health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition and total HLBS scores (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed between healthy lifestyle behaviours and HLS-EU-TR total scores, with correlation coefficients as follows: r = 0.230, p = 0.001; r = 0.215, p = 0.001; r = 0.193, p = 0.004; r = 0.308, p < 0.001; r = 0.247, p < 0.001; r = 0.284, p < 0.001; r = 0.313, p < 0.001. Furthermore, 13.1% of the change in healthy lifestyle behaviours was explained by the HLS-EU-TR Treatment and Services subdimension and grade level (R2 = 0.131). The HLS-EU-TR Treatment and Services subdimension and grade level positively contributed to the level of healthy lifestyle behaviours (ß = 0.373; ß = 0.164). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the identification of a positive correlation between health literacy and healthy lifestyle behaviours indicates that health literacy significantly influences healthy lifestyle choices. This correlation suggests that as students progress through their educational journey, their knowledge and behaviours toward health improve, highlighting that increased educational attainment equips individuals with the skills necessary to engage more effectively in the healthcare system and to translate acquired knowledge into behaviour. These findings underscore the critical role of ongoing health education initiated from an early age. Full article

Background/Objectives: Physical fitness is a key determinant of health in university students, a population at risk of sedentary behaviors and lifestyle-related health issues. The European Fitness Badge (EFB) provides a comprehensive assessment of fitness parameters and individualized feedback. This study aimed to evaluate the physical fitness of Romanian university students using the EFB to examine the effects of activity profile, sex, age, and academic major and to associate physical fitness with body composition indices, including Body Mass Index (BMI) and A Body Shape Index (ABSI). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 180 university students (43.33% male; age 18–53 years). Participants were categorized into two fitness profiles: Basic (TP1) and Advanced (TP2). Physical fitness was assessed through standardized EFB protocols measuring endurance, strength, flexibility, coordination, and overall fitness. Independent t-tests, one- and two-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlations were used to analyze differences and associations. Results: TP2 participants scored significantly higher in endurance, strength, coordination, and overall fitness, Males outperformed females in strength and coordination. Strength decreased with age, particularly in the oldest group. The sports students demonstrated superior fitness compared to peers in other majors. Two-way ANOVA revealed significant interactions between profile and sex for strength and overall fitness. BMI and ABSI were negatively correlated with physical fitness, in strength, coordination, and overall fitness. Conclusions: The EFB proved effective in differentiating physical fitness profiles. Demographic factors and body composition influenced fitness outcomes, underscoring the need for targeted, profile-based physical activity strategies specifically adapted to university curricula and extracurricular sport programs. However, the findings should be interpreted in light of the study’s geographic limitation, as the sample included only Romanian university students. Full article

Background: A negative lifestyle has been reported to be associated with poor quality of life (QoL). However, there is limited information regarding the relationship between satisfaction with life (SWL) and lifestyle factors in university students. Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine the association between lifestyle parameters, quality of life (i.e., physical, psychological, social, and environmental dimensions), and categories of satisfaction with life (i.e., extremely satisfied, satisfied, slightly satisfied, dissatisfied, extremely dissatisfied) in Chilean university students. Methods: This cross-sectional study included a total of 212 university students (128 females and 83 males), aged between 18 and 28 years. Physical activity (PA), screen time (ST), dietary habits, sleep quality, QoL, and SWL were assessed using validated questionnaires. Results: SWL presented inverse association with unhealthy diet (β = −0.18, 95%CI; −0.28 to −0.09, p < 0.001), sleep < 6 h (β = −0.21, 95%CI; −0.31 to −0.11, <0.001), ST > 4 h (β = −0.10, 95%CI; −0.18 to −0.01, 0.015) and non-PA (β = −0.10, 95%CI; −0.19 to −0.01, p = 0.027). Regarding the association between lifestyle parameters and QoL, unhealthy diet was inversely associated with the physical (β; 0.18, 95%CI; −0.27 to −0.09, <0.001), psychological (β = −0.18, 95%CI; −0.27 to 0.09, p < 0.001), and environmental (β = −0.14, 95%CI; −0.23 to −0.06, 0.001) dimensions, and overall QoL score (β = −0.06, 95%CI; −0.09 to −0.03, p < 0.001). Sleep duration < 6 h showed inverse associations with the physical (β = −0.21, 95%Ci; −0.30 to −0.11, <0.001), psychological (β = −0.20, 95%CI; −0.30 to −0.10, <0.001), social (β = −0.30, 95%CI; −0.47 to −0.14, p < 0.001), and environmental (β = −0.13, 95CI; −0.21 to −0.04, p = 0.004) dimensions, and overall QoL score (β = −0.07, 95%CI; −0.10 to −0.04, p < 0.001). Non-PA was associated with physical dimensions (β = −0.09, 95%CI; −0.17 to −0.01, p = 0.019). Non-PA reported association with physical (β = −0.16, 95%CI; −0.25 to −0.07, p < 0.001), psychological (β = −0.20, 95%CI; −0.30 to −0.10, p < 0.001), social (β = −0.25, 95%CI; −0.41 to −0.09, p = 0.002), and environmental (β = −0.11, 95%CI; −0.19 to −0.02, p = 0.010) dimensions, and QoL overall score (β = −0.06, 95%CI; −0.09 to −0.03, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Poor diet, inadequate sleep, excessive ST, and non-PA are all associated with negative impacts on SWL and QoL in Chilean university students. Full article

This study presents the validation of the Player Personality and Dynamics Scale (PPDS), designed to identify player profiles in educational gamification contexts with narrative elements. Through a sample of 635 participants, a questionnaire was developed and applied, covering sociodemographic data, lifestyle habits, gaming practices, and a classification system of 40 items on a six-point Likert scale. The results of the factorial analysis confirm a structure of five factors: Toxic Profile, Joker Profile, Tryhard Profile, Aesthetic Profile, and Coacher Profile, with high fit and reliability indices (RMSEA = 0.06; CFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.91). The resulting classification enables the design of personalized gamified experiences that enhance learning and interaction in the classroom, highlighting the importance of understanding players’ motivations to better adapt educational dynamics. Applying this scale fosters meaningful learning through the creation of narratives tailored to students’ individual preferences. Full article

Background/Objectives: Perceived physical literacy (PPL) appears to be a relevant strategy for combating the prevalent sedentary lifestyle among young people. Therefore, understanding their PPL levels will facilitate the implementation of appropriate strategies for this purpose. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the differences in PPL considering the sex dimension (i.e., males and females) and the age-group (i.e., early compulsory secondary education, late compulsory secondary education and baccalaureate). Methods: Seven-hundred-and-four Spanish students (age = 14.3 ± 1.6 years old) belonging to three different Spanish secondary schools voluntarily participated in this study. To assess adolescents’ perceptions of their physical literacy, the Spanish Adolescents’ Perceived Physical Literacy Assessment (S-PPLI) was used. This instrument consists of nine items equally distributed across three categories: self-perception and self-confidence, self-expression and communication with others, and knowledge and understanding. Results: Males obtained higher scores in all the indicators of PPL, except for items 1, 8 and 9, compared to their female counterparts (p < 0.05), while the oldest age-group reported higher scores in the indicators of knowledge and understanding category compared to students in the early years of compulsory secondary education (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Programs based on increasing the PPL should be implemented specifically for females. Also, similar programs must be included into scholar curriculums from the beginning of secondary education, with the aim of promoting improvements in the health and physical condition of Spanish adolescents. Background/Objectives: Acrylamide is a probably carcinogenic to humans that naturally forms during the thermal processing of foods. An individual’s lifestyle—especially dietary habits and physical activity—may influence the severity of acrylamide’s adverse health effects. This study aimed to examine the relationship between adolescents’ dietary and exercise behaviors and their dietary acrylamide exposure and associated health risks. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 370 high school students in Türkiye. Data were collected using the Nutrition Exercise Behavior Scale (NEBS) and a retrospective 24-h dietary recall questionnaire. Acrylamide exposure was calculated based on food intake to estimate carcinogenic (CR) and non-corcinogenic (target hazard quotient: THQ) health risks and analyzed in relation to NEBS scores. Results: Findings indicated that while adolescents are beginning to adopt healthy eating and exercise habits, these behaviors are not yet consistent. Emotional eating and unhealthy food choices still occur. Higher acrylamide exposure and risk values were observed in boys and underweight individuals. This can be explained mainly by the fact that boys consume more of certain foods—especially bread, which contains relatively higher levels of acrylamide—than girls do, and that underweight individuals have lower body weights despite consuming similar amounts of food as other groups. Bread products emerged as the primary source of daily acrylamide intake. Positive correlations were found between NEBS total and subscale scores and acrylamide exposure and health risk values. Conclusions: The study demonstrates a significant association between adolescents’ health behaviors and acrylamide exposure. These results underscore potential public health concerns regarding acrylamide intake during adolescence and emphasize the need for targeted nutritional interventions to reduce risk and promote sustainable healthy behaviors. Associations Between Smoking, Stress, Quality of Life, and Oral Health Among Dental Students in Romania: A Cross-Sectional Study

Students, particularly those in the medical field, are exposed to various stressors that can affect their health-related behaviors, including smoking habits, with implications for oral health and quality of life. Background and Objectives: to analyze the relationship between smoking, oral health, perceived stress level, and self-assessed quality of life in a sample of dental students. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study included 338 students, who completed validated questionnaires and were clinically examined. Lifestyle was assessed using a smoking behavior questionnaire, stress levels were measured with the Student Stress Inventory (SSI), and quality of life was evaluated using the EQ-5D-5L instrument. The DMFT index was calculated to determine oral health status. Results: Among the 338 participating students, 53.8% were smokers. The lifestyle analysis revealed slightly higher average scores among non-smokers across all domains—social (3.26 vs. 3.09), attitudinal (2.75 vs. 2.97), and behavioral (3.82 vs. 3.49), but without statistically significant differences (p > 0.25). The mean DMFT score was 12.48, with no significant differences between smokers and non-smokers (p = 0.554). The SSI total score averaged 83.15, indicating a moderate level of perceived stress, again with no statistically significant differences between the groups (p > 0.05). However, slightly higher average stress scores among smokers may suggest the use of smoking as a coping mechanism. In contrast, quality of life as measured by EQ-5D-5L showed significantly worse outcomes for smokers across all five dimensions, including mobility (78.6% vs. 95.5%, p = 0.000) and self-care (93.4% vs. 100%, p = 0.001). Multivariable logistic regression identified smoking (OR = 1.935; p = 0.047) and moderate stress levels (OR = 0.258; p < 0.001) as independent predictors of oral health status. Conclusions: The results obtained suggest that smoking may function as a stress management strategy among students, supporting the relevance of integrating specific psychobehavioral interventions that address stress reduction and oral health promotion among student populations. A Sustainability-Oriented Assessment of Noise Impacts on University Dormitories: Field Measurements, Student Survey, and Modeling Analysis

Ensuring a sustainable and healthy human environment in university dormitories is essential for students’ learning, living, and overall health and well-being. To address this need, we carried out a series of systematic field measurements of the noise levels at 30 dormitories in three representative major urban universities in a major provincial capital city in China and designed and implemented a comprehensive questionnaire and surveyed 1005 students about their perceptions of their acoustic environment. We proposed and applied a sustainability–health-oriented, multidimensional assessment framework to assess the acoustic environment of the dormitories and student responses to natural sound, technological sounds, and human-made sounds. Using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach combined with the field measurements and student surveys, we identified three categories and six factors on student health and well-being for assessing the acoustic environment of university dormitories. The field data indicated that noise levels at most of the measurement points exceeded the recommended or regulatory thresholds. Higher noise impacts were observed in early mornings and evenings, primarily due to traffic noise and indoor activities. Natural sounds (e.g., wind, birdsong, water flow) were highly valued by students for their positive effect on the students’ pleasantness and satisfaction. Conversely, human and technological sounds (traffic noise, construction noise, and indoor noise from student activities) were deemed highly disturbing. Gender differences were evident in the assessment of the acoustic environment, with male students generally reporting higher levels of the pleasantness and preference for natural sounds compared to female students. Educational backgrounds showed no significant influence on sound perceptions. The findings highlight the need for providing actionable guidelines for dormitory ecological design, such as integrating vertical greening in dormitory design, water features, and biodiversity planting to introduce natural soundscapes, in parallel with developing campus activity standards and lifestyle during noise-sensitive periods. The multidimensional assessment framework will drive a sustainable human–ecology–sound symbiosis in university dormitories, and the category and factor scales to be employed and actions to improve the level of student health and well-being, thus, providing a reference for both research and practice for sustainable cities and communities. Modern Western societies are “aging” at a very high rate, and more and more people require assistance and care. Old age has different faces, which is due to genetic conditions, as well as the different contexts and lifestyles of people. To ensure good adaptation of seniors, it is important to determine the conditions for “successful aging”. Therefore, the purpose of the conducted study was to determine the importance of selected predictors, including the level of religiosity, assessment of health, and the intensity of motivational needs of seniors—students of the University of the Third Age—for the level of their well-being. A total of 115 people were surveyed, including 93 women and 21 men who were students in the first year of the Third Age University at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow. The surveyed seniors represented an autonomous type of religiosity, a high level of realization of the needs of self-determination, namely autonomy and competence, declared an average assessment of the state of their health, and revealed an increased level of eudaimonic well-being. Predictors of the level of well-being of the surveyed seniors turned out to be the variables religious experience, need for autonomy and competence, and health status, as assessed by the seniors. Background: Skipping breakfast, a prevalent issue among children and adolescents, has been reported to be associated with academic performance and long-term health. However, less attention has been given to the types of breakfast foods consumed. Therefore, our study aims to investigate the association between breakfast variety and dietary knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) among preadolescents. Methods: The study included 1449 students in grades 4–6 from Zhongshan city, Guangdong province. Data were collected through face-to-face field investigation using a validated questionnaire. The questionnaire encompassed sociodemographic characteristics, as well as dietary KAP. Results: Among all participants, 1315 reported consuming breakfast daily. Dietary diversity varied significantly: 8.8% consumed only 1 type of food, 52.9% consumed 2–4 types, and 38.3% consumed ≥5 types. Students who consumed a greater variety of breakfast foods exhibited more favorable dietary and lifestyle patterns. Specifically, those who consumed ≥5 types of food showed statistically significant associations with healthier practices, including reduced intake of sugary beverages and night snacks, stronger adherence to dietary guidelines, more positive attitudes toward improving eating habits, longer sleep durations, increased participation in meal preparation, greater dish variety in meals, and higher engagement in daily physical activity. Conclusions: Breakfast variety was associated with KAP, particularly when breakfast types ≥ 5, providing more sufficient and favorable evidence for breakfast consumption. Full article

Food addiction (FA) is an emerging psychiatric condition that presents behavioral and neurobiological similarities with other addictions, and its early identification is essential to prevent the development of more severe disorders. The aim of the present study was to determine the ability of anthropometric measures, eating habits, symptoms related to eating disorders (ED), and lifestyle features to predict the symptoms of food addiction. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 702 university students (77.3% women; age: 22 ± 6 years). The Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0), the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), anthropometric measurements, and a set of self-report questions on substance use, physical activity level, and other questions were administered. A total of 6.4% of participants presented symptoms compatible with food addiction, and 8.1% were at risk for ED. Additionally, 26.5% reported daily smoking, 70.6% consumed alcohol, 2.9% used illicit drugs, and 29.4% took medication; 35.3% did not engage in physical activity. Individuals with food addiction had higher BMI (p = 0.010), waist circumference (p = 0.001), and body fat (p < 0.001) values, and a higher risk of eating disorders (p = 0.010) compared to those without this condition. In the multivariate logistic model, non-dairy beverage consumption (such as coffee or alcohol), vitamin D deficiency, and waist circumference predicted food addiction symptoms (R2Nagelkerke = 0.349). Indeed, the machine learning approaches confirmed the influence of these variables. Conclusions: The prediction models allowed an accurate prediction of FA in the university students; moreover, the individualized approach improved the identification of people with FA, involving complex dimensions of eating behavior, body composition, and potential nutritional deficits not previously studied. Background: Although the prevalence of dental caries in children has been decreasing in recent years, many patients still visit tertiary dental institutions with dental caries as their chief complaint. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic that occurred around the world in 2020 may have affected the lifestyle and oral condition of children. Methods: We investigated the oral condition of new patients whose chief complaint was dental caries, and compared the results for 3 fiscal years: 2013, 2018, and 2023. The caries status was evaluated using the dmft/DMFT index. Results: The number of subjects was 129 in 2013, 163 in 2018, and 127 in 2023. The number of preschoolers in 2023 was lower than in the other years, whereas the number of elementary school students was higher, showing a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). For the 3 years investigated, there was no change in the incidence of dental caries in primary teeth in elementary school children; however, the incidence in permanent teeth increased over time. Additionally, in the age group, the df and DMF scores were higher in 2023 than in the other years. Conclusions: At this tertiary dental institution, the number of elementary school patients, especially females, increased over the 10-year period, and the amount of dental caries in their permanent teeth also increased. It is important for dental professionals to understand this trend and focus on providing oral hygiene education to this age group. Full article
