This article presents a spatial analysis of projects selected by city residents and implemented in five successive editions (2015–2019) of the participatory budgeting in Częstochowa, Poland. The study examines the relationship between the type of hard projects (small investments in public infrastructure and landscaping) and the pre-existing characteristics of the land use of each district. Kernel density estimation and Spearman correlation analysis were used. The highest spatial density occurred in projects related to the modernization of roads and sidewalks, recreation, and greenery, indicating a relatively high number of proposals within or near residential areas. Key correlations included the following: (1) greenery projects were more common in districts lacking green areas; (2) recreational infrastructure was more frequently chosen in areas with significant water features; (3) street furniture projects were mostly selected in districts with sparse development, scattered buildings, and postindustrial sites; (4) educational infrastructure was often chosen in low-density, but developing districts. The selected projects often reflect local deficits in specific land use or public infrastructure, but also stress the predestination of the recreational use of waterside areas. Full article

The spatial genes of rural settlements show a lot of different traditional settlement traits, which makes them a great starting point for studying rural spatial morphology. However, qualitative and macro-regional statistical indicators are usually used to find and extract rural settlement spatial genes. Taking Yubei Village in the Nanxi River Basin as an example, this study combined remote sensing images, real-time drone mapping, GIS (geographic information system), and space syntax, extracted 12 key indicators from five dimensions (landform and water features (environment), boundary morphology, spatial structure, street scale, and building scale), and quantitatively “decoded” the spatial genes of the settlement. The results showed that (1) the settlement is a “three mountains and one water” pattern, with cultivated land accounting for 37.4% and forest land accounting for 34.3% of the area within the 500 m buffer zone, while the landscape spatial diversity index (LSDI) is 0.708. (2) The boundary morphology is compact and agglomerated, and locally complex but overall orderly, with an aspect ratio of 1.04, a comprehensive morphological index of 1.53, and a comprehensive fractal dimension of 1.31. (3) The settlement is a “clan core–radial lane” network: the global integration degree of the axis to the holy hall is the highest (0.707), and the local integration degree R3 peak of the six-room ancestral hall reaches 2.255. Most lane widths are concentrated between 1.2 and 2.8 m, and the eaves are mostly higher than 4 m, forming a typical “narrow lanes and high houses” water town streetscape. (4) The architectural style is a combination of black bricks and gray tiles, gable roofs and horsehead walls, and “I”-shaped planes (63.95%). This study ultimately constructed a settlement space gene map and digital library, providing a replicable quantitative process for the diagnosis of Jiangnan water town settlements and heritage protection planning. Objectives: The aim of this systematic review is to analyze the research journals, sample characteristics and research methodology used in the studies about school neighborhood built environment (SNBE) and the physical health of children and adolescents. Methods: Using 124 key terms across four databases (Web of Science, PubMed, Sportdiscus and Transportation Research Board), 8837 studies were identified, and 55 were selected. The research question and evidence search were guided by the “Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcomes” (PICO) framework. Results: Most studies were published in health-related research journals (67.3%) and conducted in 16 countries, primarily urban contexts (44.4%). Cross-sectional designs dominated (89.1%), with participation ranging from a minimum of 7 schools and 94 students to a maximum of 6362 schools and 979,119 students. Street network distances are often defined by 1000 or 800 m. The SNBE variables (135 total) were often measured via GIS (67.2%). In contrast, 70.6% of the 45 physical health measures relied on self-reports. Conclusions: This systematic review highlights the diverse approaches, gaps, and common patterns in studying the association between the SNBE and the physical health of children and adolescents. Therefore, this manuscript may serve as a valuable resource to examine the current landscape of knowledge and to guide future research on this topic. Full article

The integration of shared autonomous vehicles into historic urban areas presents both opportunities and challenges. In heritage-rich environments like very old Asian (such as Suzhou old town, which serves as a use case example) or European (especially Mediterranean coastal cities) areas—characterized by narrow alleys, dense development, and sensitive cultural landscapes—shared autonomous vehicle adoption raises critical spatial and social questions. This study employs a qualitative, user-centered approach based on the ripple model to examine residents’ perceptions across four dimensions: residential patterns, parking land use, regional accessibility, and street-level infrastructure. Semi-structured interviews with 27 participants reveal five key findings: (1) public trust depends on transparent decision-making and safety guarantees; (2) shared autonomous vehicles may reshape generational residential clustering; (3) the short-term parking demand remains stable, but the long-term reuse of space is feasible; (4) shared autonomous vehicles could enhance accessibility in historic cores; (5) transport systems may evolve toward intelligent, human-centered designs. Based on these insights, the study proposes three strategies: (1) transparent risk assessment using explainable artificial intelligence and digital twins; (2) polycentric development to diversify land use; (3) hierarchical street retrofitting to balance mobility and preservation. While this study is limited by its qualitative scope and absence of simulation, it offers a framework for culturally sensitive, small-scale interventions supporting sustainable mobility transitions in historic urban contexts. Urbanization has profoundly transformed land surface morphology and amplified thermal environmental modifications, culminating in intensified urban heat island (UHI) phenomena. Local climate zones (LCZs) provide a robust methodological framework for quantifying thermal heterogeneity and dynamics at local scales. Our study investigated the Changsha–Zhuzhou–Xiangtan urban agglomeration (CZXA) as a case study and systematically examined spatiotemporal patterns of LCZs and land surface temperature (LST) from 2002 to 2019, while elucidating mechanisms influencing urban thermal environments and proposing optimized cooling strategies. Key findings demonstrated that through multi-source remote sensing data integration, long-term LCZ classification was achieved with 1,592 training samples, maintaining an overall accuracy exceeding 70%. Landscape pattern analysis revealed that increased fragmentation, configurational complexity, and diversity indices coupled with diminished spatial connectivity significantly elevate LST. Rapid development of the city in the vertical direction also led to an increase in LST. Among seven urban morphological parameters, impervious surface fraction (ISF) and pervious surface fraction (PSF) demonstrated the strongest correlations with LST, showing Pearson coefficients of 0.82 and −0.82, respectively. Pearson coefficients of mean building height (BH), building surface fraction (BSF), and mean street width (SW) also reached 0.50, 0.55, and 0.66. Redundancy analysis (RDA) results revealed that the connectivity and fragmentation degree of LCZ_8 (COHESION8) was the most critical parameter affecting urban thermal environment, explaining 58.5% of LST. Based on these findings and materiality assessment, the regional cooling model of “cooling resistance surface–cooling source–cooling corridor–cooling node” of CZXA was constructed. In the future, particular attention should be paid to the shape and distribution of buildings, especially large, openly arranged buildings with one to three stories, as well as to controlling building height and density. Moreover, tailored protection strategies should be formulated and implemented for cooling sources, corridors, and nodes based on their hierarchical significance within urban thermal regulation systems. These research outcomes offer a robust scientific foundation for evidence-based decision-making in mitigating UHI effects and promoting sustainable urban ecosystem development across urban agglomerations. Urban pluvial flooding (UPF) is an increasingly critical issue due to rapid urbanization and intensified precipitation driven by climate change that yet remains understudied in the Caribbean. This study analyzes the effects of UPF resulting from the transformation of a natural karstic landscape into an urbanized area considering a sub-watershed in Chetumal, Southern Mexican Caribbean, as a case study. Hydrographic numerical modeling was conducted using the IBER 2.5.1 software and the SCS-CN method to estimate surface runoff for a critical UPF event across three stages: (i) 1928—natural condition; (ii) 1998—semi-urbanized (78% coverage); and (iii) 2015—urbanized (88% coverage). Urbanization led to the orthogonalization of the drainage network, an increase in the sub-watershed area (20%) and mainstream length (33%), flow velocities rising 10–100 times, a 52% reduction in surface roughness, and a 32% decrease in the potential maximum soil retention before runoff occurs. In urbanized scenarios, 53.5% of flooded areas exceeded 0.5 m in depth, compared to 16.8% in non-urbanized conditions. Community-based knowledge supported flood extent estimates with 44.5% of respondents reporting floodwater levels exceeding 0.50 m, primarily in streets. Only 43.1% recalled past flood levels, indicating a loss of societal memory, although risk perception remained high among directly affected residents. The reported UPF effects perceived in the area mainly related to housing damage (30.2%), mobility disruption (25.5%), or health issues (12.9%). Although UPF events are frequent, insufficient drainage infrastructure, altered runoff patterns, and limited access to public shelters and communication increased vulnerability. Full article

The challenges of globalization and urbanization increasingly impact the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL), yet fine-grained and quantitative methods for evaluating HUL remain limited. Adopting a human-centered perspective, this study introduces a novel framework to quantitatively evaluate HUL through the lens of Historical Appearance Integrity (HAI). An evaluation system comprising four key dimensions (building materials, building colors, decorative details, and streetscape morphology) was constructed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). An Elo rating system was subsequently applied to quantify the scores of the indicators. A prediction model was developed based on transfer learning and feature fusion to estimate the scores of the indicators. The model achieved accuracies above 93% and loss values below 0.2 for all four indicators. The framework was applied to the Inner Qinhuai Historical Character Area in Nanjing for validation. Results show that the spatial distribution of HAI in the area exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity. On a 0–100 scale, the average HAI scores were 23.17 for primary roads, 27.73 for secondary roads, and 46.93 for branch roads. This study offers a fine-grained, automated approach to evaluate HAI along urban streets and provides a quantitative reference for heritage conservation and urban renewal strategies. Full article

Flowering street trees are important carriers of urban landscapes and ecological functions, as well as a significant boost to the construction of “Shanghai Flower City”. Most existing studies focus on the ornamental value or single ecological benefits, and there are insufficient systematic evaluations of the landscape–ecology synergistic effect, especially as there are few quantitative studies on the landscape value during the flowering period and long-term ecological benefits. Scientific assessment of multiple benefits is of great significance for optimizing tree species allocation and enhancing the sustainability of road landscapes. Taking flowering street trees in Shanghai’s central urban area as a case study, this paper verifies the feasibility of using digital technology to evaluate their landscape and ecological benefits and explores ways to enhance these aspects. Landscape, ecological, and comprehensive benefits were quantitatively assessed using digital images, the i-Tree model, and the entropy-weighted method. Influencing factors for each aspect were also analyzed. The results showed the following: (1) Eleven species or cultivars of flowering street trees from six families and ten genera were identified, with the majority flowering in spring, fewer in summer and autumn, and none in winter. (2) The landscape benefits model was: Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE) = −0.99 + 0.133 × Flowering branches+ 0.183 × Degree of flower display + 0.064 × Plant growth + 0.032 × Artistic conception + 0.091 × Visual harmony with surrounding elements. Melia azedarach L., Prunus × yedoensis ‘Somei-yoshino’, and Paulownia tomentosa (Thunb.) Steud. ranked highest in landscape benefits. (3) Catalpa bungei C. A. Mey., Koelreuteria bipinnata Franch., and Koelreuteria bipinnata ‘integrifoliola’ (Merr.) T.Chen had the highest plant height, diameter at breast height (DBH), and crown width among the studied trees, and ranked top in ecological benefits. (4) Koelreuteria bipinnata, Catalpa bungei, and Melia azedarach showed the best overall performance. The comprehensive benefits model was: Comprehensive Benefits = 0.6889 × Ecological benefits + 0.3111 × Landscape benefits. This study constructs a digital evaluation framework for flowering street trees, quantifies their landscape and ecological benefits, and provides optimization strategies for the selection and application of flowering trees in urban streets. Understanding how people perceive urban streetscapes is essential for enhancing the visual quality of the urban environment and optimizing street space design. While perceptions are shaped by the interplay of multiple visual elements, existing studies often isolate single semantic features, overlooking their combinations. This study proposes a Landscape Element Combination Extraction Method (SLECEM), which integrates the UniSal saliency detection model and semantic segmentation to identify landscape combinations that play a dominant role in human perceptions of streetscapes. Using street view images (SVIs) from the central area of Futian District, Shenzhen, China, we further construct a multi-dimensional feature–perception coupling analysis framework. The key findings are as follows: 1. Both low-level visual features (e.g., color, contrast, fractal dimension) and high-level semantic features (e.g., tree, sky, and building proportions) significantly influence streetscape perceptions, with strong nonlinear effects from the latter. 2. K-Means clustering of salient landscape element combinations reveals six distinct streetscape types and perception patterns. 3. Combinations of landscape features better reflect holistic human perception than single variables. 4. Tailored urban design strategies are proposed for different streetscape perception goals (e.g., beauty, safety, and liveliness). Overall, this study deepens the understanding of streetscape perception mechanisms and proposes a highly operational quantitative framework, offering systematic theoretical guidance and methodological tools to enhance the responsiveness and sustainability of urban streetscapes. In the context of cultural tourism integration, tourists’ spatial perception intention is an important carrier of spatial evaluation. In historic cultural districts represented by Jinan Mingfu City, tourists’ perceptual depth remains underexplored, leading to a misalignment between cultural tourism development and spatial quality needs. Taking Jinan Mingfu City as a representative case of a historic cultural district, while the living heritage model has revitalized local economies, the absence of a tourist perspective has resulted in misalignment between cultural tourism development and spatial quality requirements. This study establishes a technical framework encompassing “data crawling-factor aggregation-human-machine collaborative optimization”. It integrates Python web crawlers, SnowNLP sentiment analysis, and TF-IDF text mining technologies to extract physical elements; constructs a three-dimensional evaluation framework of “visual perception-spatial comfort-cultural experience” through SPSS principal component analysis; and quantifies physical element indicators such as green vision rate and signboard clutter index through street view semantic segmentation (OneFormer framework). A synergistic mechanism of machine scoring and manual double-blind scoring is adopted for correlation analysis to determine the impact degree of indicators and optimization strategies. This study identified that indicators such as green vision rate, shading facility coverage, and street enclosure ratio significantly influence tourist evaluations, with a severe deficiency in cultural spaces. Accordingly, it proposes targeted strategies, including visual landscape optimization, facility layout adjustment, and cultural scenario implementation. By breaking away from traditional qualitative evaluation paradigms, this study provides data-based support for the spatial quality enhancement of historic districts, thereby enabling the transformation of these areas from experience-oriented protection to data-driven intelligent renewal and promoting the sustainable development of cultural tourism. Rural landscape perception is of great significance in understanding the emotional connection between people and rural local environments. Seeking to rectify the problem of incomplete or biased results owing to the separation of objective and subjective landscape perception in previous studies, this study took the village of Chongming District in Shanghai, China, as an example and built an evaluation model that integrated four dimensions and 20 indicators of objective and subjective landscape perception, and used machine learning technology to analyze street view images. Subjective perception has been influenced by landscape color, style, and element perception. Notable spatial disparities have been observed in the distribution of rural landscape indicators across Chongming. This study refines key subjective and objective factors affecting rural landscape perception, and the model provides a new method for the perception evaluation of complex landscapes, providing a theoretical basis and practical reference for rural landscape planning. Using standardized productivity metrics at the flower, tree, and hectare scales, we compared their nutritional contributions. Our results revealed substantial interspecific differences in nectar quantity and composition. Tilia amurensis, Heptacodium miconioides, Aesculus turbinata, and Wisteria floribunda exhibited high nectar yields or amino acid productivity, whereas species such as Cornus kousa, though lower in nutritional yield, may offer complementary value due to their distinct flowering periods or other phenological traits. These findings underscore the importance of selecting tree species not only for aesthetic value but also for ecological function, providing an evidence-based approach to pollinator-friendly urban biodiversity planning and landscape management. Islands represent distinctive geographical landscapes where cultural heritage, history, and ecological systems converge, offering critical insights into human–environment interactions. This study investigates how visual storytelling through digital tools such as the Historical Environment Map Viewer, Environment Digimap, Google Maps and Google Street View, and ArcGIS Field Maps can be employed to capture, interpret, and communicate islands’ landscape changes. By integrating historical environmental mapping, landscape change mapping, street map views, and field observations, this study creates a layered visual narrative that reveals shifts in land use, settlement patterns, and ecological features over time. Rathlin Island represents a distinctive island landscape, and this study uses visual storytelling as a tool to foster a broader public understanding of environmental conservation and engagement with the island’s ecologial challenges. The study demonstrates that multi-perspective, interdisciplinary methods provide valuable insights into the complex dynamics of landscape change, while also offering a comprehensive vision of sustainable future landscape on small islands. This study investigates the Roman land division system, centuriation, using LIDAR data and historical data to understand the landscape during the Roman period, in this case between Roman cities such as Siscia and Andautonia. LIDAR data analysis provided evidence of the preservation of the Roman centuriation system in the present day Turopoljski Lug forest. The azimuth suggests that centuriation aligned with Siscia’s ager, while the precise territorial limits between the two agers remain unclear. Additionally, the orientation of Siscia’s streets and the alignment of modern roads like Zagrebačka street suggest continuity of the Roman road system. The research also sheds light on the agricultural nature of the region in the Roman period, challenging traditional views of Turopolje as a marshy, forested area from prehistoric periods. The presence of Roman-era drainage systems and the re-evaluation of the historical landscape indicate that the region was actively cultivated. The study also discusses the abandonment of the centuriation system after the Roman period and its subsequent transformation into forested land. Future research should focus on the exact borders between the agers of Siscia and Andautonia and the ongoing influence of Roman land division on later historical landscapes. Full article

As a World Cultural Heritage site, the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal is lined with historic and cultural cities that bear abundant historical and cultural connotations. It is of vital importance to address the issues of landscape homogenization, the disconnect between conservation measures and public needs, and other related challenges in the development of these cities. This study adopts a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative research. By integrating subjective landscape evaluation with eye tracking analysis, the ancient city of Taierzhuang along the Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal was selected as the research subject to conduct an in-depth investigation into the visual experience and preferences for different types of landscapes in this area. The study yielded the following findings: There are significant differences in visual experiences among various types of landscapes in Taierzhuang Ancient City. Among them, participants exhibited the highest level of attention toward canal landscapes and the lowest toward heritage site landscapes. In terms of visual distribution differences, eye tracking heatmaps revealed that attention was primarily concentrated on architectural structures and water surface reflections. In the subjective evaluation analysis, canal cultural landscapes received the highest comprehensive score (4.39 points), followed by historical architectural landscapes (4.02 points), historical street landscapes (3.93 points), modern commemorative landscapes (3.72 points), and heritage site landscapes (3.69 points). Additionally, a significant correlation was found between eye tracking data and subjective evaluation results, validating the scientifically effective relationship between subjective assessments of historical cultural landscapes and eye tracking analysis. The findings of this study not only provide a scientific basis for landscape improvement and optimization in other canal-related historical and cultural cities but also offer new research methods and perspectives for the protection and development of other heritage landscapes.
