Optimizing Museum Acoustics: How Absorption Magnitude and Surface Location of Finishing Materials Influence Acoustic Performance

The architecture of contemporary museums often emphasizes visual aesthetics, such as large volumes, open-plan layouts, and highly reflective finishes, resulting in acoustic challenges, such as excessive reverberation, poor speech intelligibility, elevated background noise, and reduced privacy. This study quantified the impact of surface—specific absorption treatments on acoustic metrics across eight gallery spaces. Room impulse responses calibrated virtual models, which simulated nine absorption scenarios (low, medium, and high on ceilings, floors, and walls) and evaluated reverberation time (T20), speech transmission index (STI), clarity (C50), distraction distance (rD), Spatial Decay Rate of Speech (D2,S), and Speech Level at 4 m (Lp,A,S,4m). The results indicate that going from concrete to a wooden floor yields the most rapid T20 reductions (up to −1.75 s), ceiling treatments deliver the greatest STI and C50 gains (e.g., STI increases of +0.16), and high-absorption walls maximize privacy metrics (D2,S and Lp,A,S,4m). A linear regression model further predicted the STI from T20, total absorption (Sabins), and room volume, with an 84.9% conditional R2, enabling ±0.03 accuracy without specialized testing. These findings provide empirically derived, surface-specific “first-move” guidelines for architects and acousticians, underscoring the necessity of integrating acoustics early in museum design to balance auditory and visual objectives and enhance the visitor experience. Studies underscore the significance of coir fibers as a sustainable building material. Based on these insights, this research aims to evaluate coir fiber composite panels of various thicknesses as eco-friendly sound absorbing alternatives to synthetic construction materials like rockwool and fiberglass, aligning its use with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Acoustic absorption was quantified with an impedance tube, and subsequent simulations compared the performance of coir composite panels with that of conventional materials, which constitutes an underexplored evaluation. Using 10 receiver points, the simulations reproduced the acoustic conditions of a multipurpose auditorium before and after the coir covering of parts of the rear and posterior walls. The results indicate that when coir coverings account for approximately 10% of the auditorium surface, reverberation times at 250, 500, 2000, and 4000 Hz are reduced by roughly 1 s. Furthermore, the outcomes reveal that early reflections occur more rapidly in the coir-enhanced model, while the values of the early decay time parameter decrease across all receiver points. Although the original configuration had poor speech clarity, the modified model achieved optimal values at all the measurement locations. These findings underscore the potential of coir fiber panels in enhancing acoustic performance while fostering sustainable construction practices. Full article

Although professionals who work with children and adolescents are well aware of psychological symptom presentations once children and adolescents are in school, such symptom presentations in very young children are less understood. Diagnoses like selective mutism may promote further complications for professionals, as the symptom presentation of anxiety and failure to speak in this diagnosis may overlap with the acquisition of speech and language milestones and problems in very young children. Thus, providing professionals who work with very young children a way to adapt their thinking about selective mutism symptom presentations and interventions is of utmost importance. As a result, this clinically oriented paper will compare DSM-5-TR criteria to DC:0-5 criteria, consider the occurrence of selective mutism symptoms in the context of young children’s speech and language milestones and problems, and reflect upon how intervention adaptations meant to incorporate parents into treatment and account for the capacities of very young children can be helpful in facilitating successful outcomes. It is hoped that having this constellation of clinical information in one place will help providers gain clarity regarding selective mutism symptom presentation and relevant intervention considerations for very young children. E-commerce live streaming in China has become a major retail channel, yet hosts often employ subtle phonetic or semantic “morphs” to evade moderation and make unsubstantiated claims, posing risks to consumers. To address this, we study the Live Auditory Morph Resolution (LiveAMR) task, which restores morphed speech transcriptions to their true forms. Building on prior text-based morph resolution, we propose an LLM-enhanced training framework that mines three types of explanation knowledge—predefined morph-type labels, LLM-generated reference corrections, and natural-language rationales constrained for clarity and comprehensiveness—from a frozen large language model. These annotations are concatenated with the original morphed sentence and used to fine-tune a lightweight T5 model under a standard cross-entropy objective. In experiments on two test sets (in-domain and out-of-domain), our method achieves substantial gains over baselines, improving F0.5 by up to 7 pp in-domain (to 0.943) and 5 pp out-of-domain (to 0.799) compared to a strong T5 baseline. These results demonstrate that structured LLM-derived signals can be mined without fine-tuning the LLM itself and injected into small models to yield efficient, accurate morph resolution. Background: Dysarthria is a neuromotor speech disorder that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. In Chile, there is a lack of culturally validated instruments for assessing dysarthria. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the Bogenhausen Dysarthria Scales (BoDyS) into Chilean Spanish and to conduct face and content validation. Methods: The adaptation process included translation and back-translation, followed by validation by a panel of experts. Clarity, format, and length were evaluated, and the Kappa index (KI), content validity index (CVI), and content validity ratio (CVR) were calculated to confirm item relevance. A pilot test was subsequently conducted with ten speech–language pathologists to apply the adapted version to patients. Results: The adaptation process produced a consensus version that preserved the semantic and cultural characteristics of the original scale. The statistical measures (KI = 1.00; I-CVI = 1.00; S-CVI/Ave = 1.00; S-CVI/UA = 1.00; CVR = 1.00) indicated satisfactory levels of agreement. The pilot test demonstrated the scale’s appropriateness and effectiveness for assessing dysarthria within the Chilean context, although some experts recommended reducing task repetition for patients prone to fatigue. Conclusions: The Chilean version of the BoDyS (BoDyS-CL) is a valid and useful tool for evaluating dysarthria in Chile. This study provides a foundation for further research and the systematic implementation of this scale in local clinical practice. Full article

Theaters in ancient Pompeii played a vital role in Roman entertainment, shaping the auditory experiences of spectators. This study examines the acoustic properties of the Amphitheater, the Grand Theater, and the Odeon using impulse response (IR) analysis to reconstruct their soundscapes. Next, the study considers the impact of typical musical instruments, vocal performances, and ambient sounds—such as gladiatorial combat—on these spaces’ acoustics. Findings reveal significant differences in reverberation times, sound clarity, and spatial characteristics, shaped by each theater’s design. These sites, preserved after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, provide a unique opportunity to analyze how architecture influenced sound propagation. The Amphitheater, with its vast open structure, enhanced large-scale events, while the Grand Theater’s semi-enclosed design balanced musical and theatrical performances. The Odeon, the most intimate of the three, prioritized speech clarity. These insights highlight how Roman architects engineered performance spaces to accommodate diverse entertainment forms. By combining acoustic measurements with historical context, this research offers a deeper understanding of ancient Pompeii’s soundscapes and the auditory experiences of its inhabitants and offers insights for composition and soundscape creations that take inspiration from these prominent historical architectural and cultural icons whilst exploring its potential within contemporary immersive listening practices. Speech intelligibility (SI) is critical in effective communication across various settings, although it is often compromised by adverse acoustic conditions. In noisy environments, visual cues such as lip movements and facial expressions, when congruent with auditory information, can significantly enhance speech perception and reduce cognitive effort. In an ever-growing diffusion of virtual environments, communicating through virtual avatars is becoming increasingly prevalent, thus requiring a comprehensive understanding of these dynamics to ensure effective interactions. The present study used Unreal Engine’s MetaHuman technology to compare four methodologies used to create facial animation: MetaHuman Animator (MHA), MetaHuman LiveLink (MHLL), Audio-Driven MetaHuman (ADMH), and Synthetized Audio-Driven MetaHuman (SADMH). Thirty-six word pairs from the Diagnostic Rhyme Test (DRT) were used as input stimuli to create the animations and to compare them in terms of intelligibility. Moreover, to simulate a challenging background noise, the animations were mixed with a babble noise at a signal-to-noise ratio of −13 dB (A). Participants assessed a total of 144 facial animations. Results showed the ADMH condition to be the most intelligible among the methodologies used, probably due to enhanced clarity and consistency in the generated facial animations, while eliminating distractions like micro-expressions and natural variations in human articulation. Voice conversion (VC) is an advanced technology that enables the transformation of raw speech into high-quality audio resembling the target speaker’s voice while preserving the original linguistic content and prosodic patterns. In this study, we propose a voice conversion algorithm, Multi-Dimensional Perception Flow Matching (MPFM-VC). Unlike traditional approaches that directly generate waveform outputs, MPFM-VC models the evolutionary trajectory of mel spectrograms with a flow-matching framework and incorporates a multi-dimensional feature perception network to enhance the stability and quality of speech synthesis. Additionally, we introduce a content perturbation method during training to improve the model’s generalization ability and reduce inference-time artifacts. To further increase speaker similarity, an adversarial training mechanism on speaker embeddings is employed to achieve effective disentanglement between content and speaker identity representations, thereby enhancing the timbre consistency of the converted speech. Experimental results for both speech and singing voice conversion tasks show that MPFM-VC achieves competitive performance compared to existing state-of-the-art VC models in both subjective and objective evaluation metrics. The synthesized speech shows improved naturalness, clarity, and timbre fidelity in both objective and subjective evaluations, suggesting the potential effectiveness of the proposed approach. The percentage of historical heritage buildings in Italy is substantial. Many of these buildings are abandoned or not adequately restored for public access due to safety concerns. However, some are managed by city councils and made available to local communities. These heritage buildings, valued for their historical significance, are now frequently used for live events, including musical performances by ensembles and small groups. This paper deals with the acoustics of two rooms provided with barrel-vaulted ceilings: Sisto V Hall in Naples and Aula Magna at the University of Parma. These spaces are structurally very similar, differing mainly in length. Acoustic measurements conducted in both halls reveal reverberation times of approximately 4.5 s at mid frequencies, resulting in poor speech clarity. This is primarily due to the presence of reflective surfaces, as the walls and ceilings are plastered, and the floors are tiled. To optimize their acoustic properties for functions such as celebrations, gatherings, and conferences, an acoustic design intervention was proposed. Digital models of the halls were calibrated and used to correct the acoustics by incorporating absorbing panels on the walls and carpeting on the floors of the central walk path. This treatment successfully balanced the reverberation time to approximately 1.3–1.4 s at mid frequencies, making speech more intelligible. Additionally, an amplified audio system was analyzed to enhance sound distribution, ensuring uniform coverage, even in the last rows of seating. Under amplified conditions, sound pressure levels (SPLs) range between 90 dB and 93 dB, with appropriate gain control applied to the column array speakers. Full article

In this paper, the acoustic characteristics of the most important rooms of the Royal Palace of Caserta are presented. The palace, built in the XVIII century as a residence for the King of Naples, consists of numerous rooms dedicated to court life. The acoustic properties of the rooms have been studied according to ISO 3382. For each room, the average values of reverberation time (T30), clarity (C80), definition (D50), and Speech Transmission Index (STI) are reported. The acoustic issues of the rooms are highlighted as the understanding of acoustics during the period in which the palace was constructed was limited. While the rudiments of Vitruvius’ theories were known, the good acoustics of the rooms resulted primarily from the intuition and experience of the architects who designed them. The building materials—marble and plaster—contribute to the long reverberation times in the rooms. Special attention was given to the elliptical vault where musicians were positioned, the Palatine Chapel, the theatre used for court entertainment, and the Royal Throne Room. The study applies methods and techniques already seen in the literature and already reported in other published papers. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation using a Z-test to assess the effectiveness of an adaptive Least Mean Squares (LMS) filter driven by the Steepest Descent Method (SDM). The study utilizes a male voice recording, captured in a controlled studio environment, to which persistent Gaussian noise was intentionally introduced, simulating real-world interference. All signal processing methods were implemented accordingly in MATLAB.version: 9.13.0 (R2022b), Natick, MA, USA: The MathWorks Inc.; 2022. The adaptive filter demonstrated a significant improvement of 20 dB in Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) following the initial optimization of the filter parameter μ. To further assess the LMS filter’s performance, an empirical experiment was conducted with 30 young adults, aged between 20 and 30 years, who were tasked with qualitatively distinguishing between the clean and noise-corrupted signals (blind test). The quantitative analysis and statistical evaluation of the participants’ responses revealed that a significant majority, specifically 80%, were able to reliably identify the noise-affected and filtered signals. This outcome highlights the LMS filter’s potential—despite the slow convergence of the SDM—for enhancing signal clarity in noise-contaminated environments, thus validating its practical application in speech processing and noise reduction. Based on the relative lack of research on the acoustic characteristics of traditional Gan opera theaters, this paper takes the Zhaomutang theater in Leping, Jiangxi Province, as a case study. By employing impulse response measurements and sound quality index evaluation, this work investigates and analyzes the sound field characteristics of the stage, front patio, Xiangtang, rear patio, and Qintang through field measurements. The results show that the small volume and low ceiling in the stage area lead to higher early reflections and enhanced self-auditory support for performers. The semi-enclosed Xiangtang space exhibits the best speech definition and music clarity. Although the front and rear patios are open-air, they still maintain moderate reverberation and sound energy intensity due to reflections from surrounding surfaces. In contrast, the Qintang has a relatively weak early sound energy because of its volume and functional constraints. Still, its overall reverberation time is not significantly different from that in the other areas. Comprehensive indices indicate that the Zhaomutang theater balances speech intelligibility and musical richness for multifunctional scenarios—ancestor worship, opera performances, and gatherings—thus providing an enhanced viewing experience. These findings offer critical reference points for the protection, restoration, and acoustic optimization of Gan Opera ancestral temple theaters and provide an empirical foundation for further investigation into the multi-space coupling characteristics of traditional theaters. This study investigates speech intelligibility and its influencing factors within pier-style airport lounges and assesses the applicability of the Speech Transmission Index (STI) in these large, elongated spaces. Field impulse response measurements were conducted in two pier-style departure lounges with volumes of 98,099 m3 and 60,414 m3, respectively, complemented by simulated binaural room impulse responses for subjective speech intelligibility testing in Mandarin. The research explores the correlations between various acoustic parameters—Early Decay Time (EDT), Reverberation Time (T30), and Definition(D50)—and speech intelligibility scores under different Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs). Findings indicate a significant impact of SNR on speech intelligibility, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.849, suggesting substantial variability explained by SNR. As SNR increases to 10 dB(A), speech intelligibility scores improve significantly; however, further enhancements in clarity diminish beyond this threshold. Additionally, the study reveals a significant relationship between room acoustic parameters, particularly EDT and D50, and speech intelligibility scores, with EDT having a negative impact and D50 a positive impact on speech clarity. The results confirm the suitability of STI in evaluating speech intelligibility in these specific architectural contexts. This study recommends maintaining an SNR of 10 dB(A) and a minimum STI of 0.45 for public address broadcasts in pier-style departure lounges to ensure that announcements are clearly audible to passengers. Objectives: The intricate relationship between malocclusions and speech sound disorders (SSDs) is yet to be fully understood. This is particularly true for pediatric patients during the deciduous and mixed dentition stages. Employing a methodical scoping review approach, this study scrutinizes the recent literature to elucidate how these dental misalignments impact speech articulation and phonetic clarity. Methods: The present scoping review has been conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. The selected articles have been found using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library; the scope was limited to studies describing cases of patients in the deciduous or mixed dentition stage and the presence of both malocclusion and SSDs. Results: Out of the 1880 articles found, 44 passed the initial screening and 12 met the eligibility criteria and have been included in this review. Conclusions: The analysis reveals that while there is a consensus on the influence of malocclusions on speech production, the extent and specific nature of these effects vary across studies. anterior open bite is frequently associated with speech disorders, affecting phonemes by altering airflow and tongue placement. The review highlights the need for multidisciplinary approaches for effective treatment and calls for further investigation into the causative relationships between malocclusions and SSDs. Enhancing Communication and Swallowing Skills in Children with Cri Du Chat Syndrome: A Comprehensive Speech Therapy Guide

Background: A specific deletion on the short arm of chromosome 5 (5p) is the hallmark of the rare genetic syndrome called Cri du Chat Syndrome (CdCS). It causes severe difficulty with swallowing, speech, motor skills, and cognitive deficiencies. These arise from characteristic laryngeal abnormalities and oral–motor dysfunctions. Objective: This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of speech and language intervention in addressing the multifaceted challenges of CdCS, including speech and language impairments, feeding difficulties, and social communication deficits. Methods: A narrative review was conducted to synthesize existing studies from the last 35 years on therapeutic interventions for individuals with CdCS. This review focused on interventions targeting speech, language, and swallowing therapy. Comprehensive searches were performed in the PubMed and Scopus databases using descriptors such as “Cri du Chat”, “swallowing disorders”, “speech disorders”, “speech and language disorders”, and “speech and language therapy.” From the identified records, 40 peer-reviewed English-language publications that addressed speech, language, and swallowing interventions were selected based on relevance and inclusion criteria. Data extraction was performed independently by four reviewers, working in two teams. Any disagreements between the teams were resolved through discussion with an independent researcher to ensure reliability and minimize bias. Results: The findings demonstrate that speech and language therapy (SLT) significantly enhances speech clarity, articulation, and oral–motor coordination. Augmentative communication systems effectively bridge gaps in nonverbal communication, fostering improved social interaction. Specific interventions reduce aspiration risks and improve feeding safety, enhancing the overall quality of life. Early multidisciplinary approaches and tailored therapeutic strategies are key to maximizing the benefits of SLT. Conclusions: SLT is crucial for improving communication, swallowing, and social integration in individuals with CdCS. Regular early intervention involving individualized programs and family participation is recommended to achieve optimal outcomes. Further research is needed to evaluate long-term effects and develop cultural and technologically adaptable therapies. Full article
