Situated at the intersection of social history and psychology, this study examines how early Christian communities in Bithynia-Pontus navigated the persecution narrated in Pliny the Younger’s Epistle X 96. Through systematic textual analysis of Latin and Greek sources—triangulated with comparative evidence from Tacitus and corroborating archaeological data—and interpreted through Conservation-of-Resources and Social Identity theoretical frameworks, we reconstruct the repertoire of collective coping strategies mobilised under Roman repression. Our findings show that ritualised dawn assemblies, mutual economic assistance, and a theologically grounded expectation of post-mortem vindication converted external coercion into internal cohesion; these practices neutralised informer threat, sustained group morale, and ultimately expanded Christian networks across Asia Minor. Moreover, Pliny’s ad hoc judicial improvisations reveal the governor’s own bounded rationality, underscoring the reciprocal nature of stress between the persecutor and persecuted. By mapping the dynamic interaction between imperial policy and subaltern agency, the article clarifies why limited, locally triggered violence consolidated rather than extinguished the nascent movement. The analysis contributes a theoretically informed, evidence-based account of religious-minority resilience, enriching both early Christian historiography and broader debates on group survival under systemic duress. The terms fillenoert, villemort, feulje mort, and fillemot are obsolete historical color names derived from the French feuille morte (dead leaf), referred to a broad spectrum of brownish, yellowish, greenish, and reddish hues in early modern textile dyeing. This study investigates the visual identity and chromatic range of dead leaf by reconstructing dye recipes from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century European dyeing manuals. Using historically accurate materials and techniques, wool samples were dyed and analyzed through CIELAB color measurements to quantify their hue values. The results reveal that dead leaf does not correspond to a single, fixed color but represents a flexible and metaphorical category, reflecting both the natural variation in dead foliage and the diversity of historical dyeing practices. In early modern Europe, colors were often descriptive, frequently referencing the natural world or objects. These descriptors offered a nuanced vocabulary that extended far beyond today’s basic chromatic terms. Reworking these recipes reveals the complex interplay between chromatic language, material practices, and color perception. Historical color names served not merely as labels but encoded information about dye sources, cultural associations, and socio-economic contexts. Understanding and reviving this terminology deepens our appreciation of early dyeing traditions and bridges past and present conceptions of color. Full article

Background and Clinical Significance: The 45,X0/46,XY mosaic karyotype is categorized as a disorder of sex development and can lead to atypical sexual development. Latent mosaicism involving Y chromosomal segments may be much more prevalent than previously assumed, according to a growing number of findings. This primarily depends on how sensitive cytogenetic methods are—such as traditional karyotype screening, FISH methods, or molecular analyses. Case Presentation: We present the case of a 10-week-old infant with hermaphroditic external genitalia. During pregnancy, ultrasonography revealed severe fetal development difficulties, including severe widespread edema. An abnormal 45,X0/46,XY mosaic karyotype was discovered during a genetic amniocentesis conducted during the 16th week of pregnancy. The infant was born in average general condition at 39 + 6 weeks of gestation. Physical examination of the infant revealed features of facial dysmorphia, webbed neck, and hermaphroditic external genitalia. The testicle was palpable on the left side, but the gonad was absent on the right. Laboratory tests revealed a typical hormonal profile of the mini-puberty period in boys. Moreover, a hormone panel and thyroid ultrasound were performed; congenital hypothyroidism was diagnosed. Three separate independent sources of biological material were used in cytogenetic analysis to determine the karyotype: skin fibroblasts (to confirm tissue mosaicism), oral epithelial cells (FISH), and peripheral blood lymphocytes. It showed that a mosaic occurred very early in embryogenesis by confirming the existence of karyotypes 45,X and 46,XY in various tissues (mosaic tissue distribution). Conclusions: Tissue mosaicism should be compared to the analysis of tissues from other embryonic origins, including blood and oral tissue. Support for gender identity and treatment decisions, including the prediction of the future risk of gonadoblastoma, as well as multidisciplinary care, is necessary. Full article

Articular cartilage (AC) has a very limited capacity for self-healing once damaged. Chondrocytes maintain AC homeostasis and are key cells in AC tissue engineering (ACTE). However, chondrocytes lose their function due to oxidative stress. Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) are investigated as an alternative cell source for ACTE. MSCs are known to regulate tissue regeneration through host cell modulation, largely via extracellular vesicle (EV)-mediated cell-to-cell communication. The purpose of this study was to verify whether UCMSC-derived EVs (UCMSC-EVs) enhance chondrocyte function. The mean particle sizes of the UCMSC-EVs were 79.8 ± 19.05 nm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that UCMSC-EVs exhibited a spherical morphology. The presence of CD9, CD63, and CD81 confirmed the identity of UCMSC-EVs, with α-tubulin undetected. UCMSC-EVs maintained chondrocyte survival, and increased chondrocyte proliferation after intake by chondrocytes. UCMSC-EVs upregulated mRNA levels of SOX-9, collagen type II (Col-II), and Aggrecan, while decreasing collagen type I (Col-I) levels. UCMSC-EVs reduced the oxidative stress of chondrocytes by reducing mitochondrial superoxide production and increasing protein levels of SOD-2 and Sirt-3 in chondrocytes. The 50 most abundant known microRNAs (miRNAs) derived from UCMSC-EVs were selected for gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses. GO analysis revealed enrichment in pathways associated with small GTPase-mediated signal transduction, GTPase regulatory activity, and mitochondrial matrix. The KEGG analysis indicated that these miRNAs may regulate chondrocyte function through the PI3K-Akt, MAPK, and cAMP signaling pathways. In summary, this study shows that UCMSC-EVs enhance chondrocyte function and may be applied to ACTE. Full article

Ice energy storage systems have gained significant attention as sustainable solutions for energy management, particularly in applications with fluctuating energy demands. This study aims to compare two different designs, a triple-tube heat exchanger (TTHE) and spherical ice balls, the latter being the most widely used traditional design in the industry. The TTHE design was first analyzed theoretically, then optimized using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, and validated by the literature. Finally, it was compared with spherical ice balls under identical conditions. The analyses were conducted for an ice storage volume of 1000 kg, with the complete solidification process designed to occur within 8 h. The results indicate that the TTHE reduced solidification time by 25% while simultaneously increasing energy storage by 8%. This study contributes to the advancement of sustainable energy technologies by providing a comparative analysis of spherical ice balls and triple-tube heat exchangers for optimizing ice storage systems. The implementation of a TTHE for thermal storage can lower energy costs, mitigate peak demand, and address the intermittency challenges associated with renewable energy sources. Full article

This study examines the influence of mass media on the career choices of high school students from Brașov County, Romania, with a focus on their underlying motivational factors. Employing a quantitative design, it draws on data from a standardized questionnaire completed by 1314 students from local high schools. Descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used in the analysis. While some students identify mass media as a key source of career guidance, documentaries and career fairs are more frequently cited as trusted sources. Students’ perceptions of mass media are ambivalent: 55.1% see it as manipulative, while 41.7% and 24.7% acknowledge its informative and educational roles. Personal motivation emerges as the most significant influence, with 64.8% guided by individual talents and abilities, compared to a lower influence from family or media role models. Correlational analysis highlights the importance of personal development, creativity, and collaboration in career motivation. This study suggests that mass media indirectly shapes students’ aspirations by reinforcing values like social recognition, mobility, and identity. Finally, it reveals a strong link between career interest and expectations for respectful, stable, and growth-oriented work environments, pointing to a pragmatic orientation toward professional sustainability. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) has become a key data source for ship behavior monitoring and maritime traffic management, widely used in trajectory prediction and anomaly detection. However, AIS data suffer from issues such as spatial sparsity, heterogeneous features, variable message formats, and irregular sampling intervals, while vessel trajectories are characterized by strong spatial–temporal dependencies. These factors pose significant challenges for efficient and accurate modeling. To address this issue, we propose a lightweight vessel trajectory prediction framework that integrates Spatial–Temporal Identity encoding with an MLP-Mixer architecture. The framework discretizes spatial and temporal features into structured IDs and uses dual MLP modules to model temporal dependencies and feature interactions without relying on convolution or attention mechanisms. Experiments on a large-scale real-world AIS dataset demonstrate that the proposed STID-Mixer achieves superior accuracy, training efficiency, and generalization capability compared to representative baseline models. The method offers a compact and deployable solution for large-scale maritime trajectory modeling. Full article

This paper presents a novel digital identity ecosystem built upon a hierarchical structure of Blockchain tokens, where both government-certified and uncertified tokens can coexist to represent various attributes of an individual’s identity. At the core of this system is the government, which functions as a trusted authority capable of creating entities and issuing a unique, non-replicable digital identity token for each one. Entities are the exclusive owners of their identity tokens and can attach additional tokens—such as those issued by the government, educational institutions, or financial entities—to form a verifiable, token-based digital identity tree. This model accommodates a flexible identity framework that enables decentralized yet accountable identity construction. Our contributions include the design of a digital identity system (supported by smart contracts) that enforces uniqueness through state-issued identity tokens while supporting user-driven identity formation. The model differentiates between user types and certifies tokens according to their source, enabling a scalable and extensible structure. We also analyze the economic, technical, and social feasibility of deploying this system, including a breakdown of transaction costs for key stakeholders such as governments, end-users, and institutions like universities. Considering the benefits of blockchain, implementing a digital identity ecosystem in this technology is economically viable for all involved stakeholders. Full article

Both ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) and energy underground structures are engineered systems that utilize shallow geothermal energy. However, due to the construction complexity and associated costs of energy tunnels, their heat exchange efficiency relative to GSHPs remains a topic worthy of in-depth investigation. In this study, a thermal–hydraulic (TH) coupled finite element model was developed based on a section of the Torino Metro Line in Italy to analyze the differences in and influencing factors of heat transfer performance between energy tunnels and GSHPs. The model was validated by comparing the outlet temperature curves under both winter and summer loading conditions. Based on this validated model, a parametric analysis was conducted to examine the effects of the tunnel air velocity, heat carrier fluid velocity, and fluid type. The results indicate that, under identical environmental conditions, energy tunnels exhibit higher heat exchange efficiency than conventional GSHP systems and are less sensitive to external factors such as fluid velocity. Furthermore, a comparison of different heat carrier fluids, including alcohol-based fluids, refrigerants, and water, revealed that the fluid type significantly affects thermal performance, with the refrigerant R-134a outperforming ethylene glycol and water in both heating and cooling efficiency. Vehicle re-identification (Re-ID) is a critical computer vision task that aims to match the same vehicle across spatially distributed cameras, especially in the context of remote sensing imagery. While prior research has primarily focused on Re-ID using remote sensing images captured from similar, typically elevated viewpoints, these settings do not fully reflect complex aerial-ground collaborative remote sensing scenarios. In this work, we introduce a novel and challenging task: aerial-ground cross-view vehicle Re-ID, which involves retrieving vehicles in ground-view image galleries using query images captured from aerial (top-down) perspectives. This task is increasingly relevant due to the integration of drone-based surveillance and ground-level monitoring in multi-source remote sensing systems, yet it poses substantial challenges due to significant appearance variations between aerial and ground views. To support this task, we present AGID (Aerial-Ground Vehicle Re-Identification), the first benchmark dataset specifically designed for aerial-ground cross-view vehicle Re-ID. AGID comprises 20,785 remote sensing images of 834 vehicle identities, collected using drones and fixed ground cameras. We further propose a novel method, Enhanced Self-Correlation Feature Computation (ESFC), which enhances spatial relationships between semantically similar regions and incorporates shape information to improve feature discrimination. Extensive experiments on the AGID dataset and three widely used vehicle Re-ID benchmarks validate the effectiveness of our method, which achieves a Rank-1 accuracy of 69.0% on AGID, surpassing state-of-the-art approaches by 2.1%. The influence of social media personalities has grown significantly, especially among youth audiences who spend substantial time on platforms like TikTok. The emergence and popularity of different types of social media influencers accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic in many countries, including South Africa. In turn, this period also saw a surge in youth audiences following these influencers. This rapid growth of influencer followings among young people is largely driven by specific types of content that resonate with them, thus encouraging continued engagement. However, the benefits that these young followers gain from engaging with various influencers and the factors driving their preferences for specific influencers remain underexplored, particularly within the context of South African students within higher education. Therefore, this study explores the types of social media influencers most followed by university students at a South African University and investigates the key factors that drive their preferences. A structured online questionnaire was distributed, gathering both multiple-choice and open-ended responses from students. The data were analyzed using categorical frequency counts and thematic analysis. The data highlight how students actively turn to influencers as emotional anchors, role models, and sources of practical guidance. Their engagement reflects a deep need for connection, inspiration, and identity formation in a challenging academic and social environment. These patterns show that influencer content is not just entertainment but plays a critical developmental role. Understanding these motivations helps educators, policymakers, and brands to align better with youth values. The significance of these results lies in how influencer content is now coming in to fill the emotional, cultural, and educational gaps left by traditional systems among the young South African university students in this modern era. Commitments to carbon neutrality at both international and national levels have spurred the development of market-based mechanisms that incentivize low-carbon technologies while penalizing emissions-intensive activities. These policies have wide ranging impacts for the Australian agricultural sector, and associated rural communities, where the majority of carbon credits and biodiversity credits are sourced in Australia. Undeniably, the introduction of carbon and environmental markets has created the opportunity for an expansion and diversification of local, rural economies beyond a traditional agricultural base. However, there is much complexity for the agricultural sector to navigate as environmental markets intersect and compete with food and fiber livelihoods, and entrenched ideologies of rural identity and purpose. As carbon and environmental markets focused on primary producers have expanded rapidly, there is little understanding of the associated situated and relational impacts for farming households and rural communities. Nor has there been much work to identify the barriers to engagement. This study explores these tensions through qualitative research in Stanthorpe and Roma, Queensland, offering insights into the barriers and benefits of market engagement. The findings inform policy development aimed at balancing climate goals with agricultural sustainability and rural community resilience. Full article

Media organizations are experiencing ongoing transformation, increasingly driven by the advancement of AI technologies. This development has begun to link journalists with generative systems and synthetic technologies. Although newsrooms worldwide are exploring AI adoption to improve information sourcing, news production, and distribution, a gap exists between resource-rich organizations and those with limited means. Since ChatGPT 3.5 was released on 30 November 2022, Greek media and journalists have gained the ability to use and explore AI technology. In this study, we examine the use of AI in Greek newsrooms, as well as journalists’ reflections and concerns. Through qualitative analysis, our findings indicate that the adoption and integration of these tools in Greek newsrooms is marked by the lack of formal institutional policies, leading to a predominantly self-directed and individualized use of these technologies by journalists. Greek journalists engage with AI tools both professionally and personally, often without organizational guidance or formal training. This issue may compromise the quality of journalism due to the absence of established guidelines. Consequently, individuals may produce content that is inconsistent with the media outlet’s identity or that disseminates misinformation. Age, gender, and newsroom roles do not constitute limiting factors for this “experimentation”, as survey participants showed familiarity with this technology. In addition, in some cases, the disadvantages of specific tools regarding qualitative results in Greek are inhibiting factors for further exploration and use. All these points to the need for immediate training, literacy, and ethical frameworks. Full article

Infrared and visible image fusion (IVIF) endeavors to amalgamate the thermal radiation characteristics from infrared images with the fine-grained texture details from visible images, aiming to produce fused outputs that are more robust and information-rich. Among the existing methodologies, those based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) have demonstrated considerable promise. However, such approaches are frequently constrained by their reliance on homogeneous discriminators possessing identical architectures, a limitation that can precipitate the emergence of undesirable artifacts in the resultant fused images. To surmount this challenge, this paper introduces HCSPNet, a novel GAN-based framework. HCSPNet distinctively incorporates heterogeneous dual discriminators, meticulously engineered for the fusion of disparate source images inherent in the IVIF task. This architectural design ensures the steadfast preservation of critical information from the source inputs, even when faced with scenarios of image degradation. Specifically, the two structurally distinct discriminators within HCSPNet are augmented with adaptive salient information distillation (ASID) modules, each uniquely structured to align with the intrinsic properties of infrared and visible images. This mechanism impels the discriminators to concentrate on pivotal components during their assessment of whether the fused image has proficiently inherited significant information from the source modalities—namely, the salient thermal signatures from infrared imagery and the detailed textural content from visible imagery—thereby markedly diminishing the occurrence of unwanted artifacts. Comprehensive experimentation conducted across multiple publicly available datasets substantiates the preeminence and generalization capabilities of HCSPNet, underscoring its significant potential for practical deployment. Additionally, we also prove that our proposed heterogeneous dual discriminators can serve as a plug-and-play structure to improve the performance of existing GAN-based methods. Full article

The global coffee supply chain is a complex multi-stakeholder ecosystem plagued by fragmented records, unverifiable origin claims, and limited real-time visibility. These limitations pose risks to ethical sourcing, product quality, and consumer trust. To address these issues, this paper proposes a blockchain and IoT-enabled framework for secure and transparent coffee supply chain management. The system integrates simulated IoT sensor data such as Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) identity tags, Global Positioning System (GPS) logs, weight measurements, environmental readings, and mobile validations with Ethereum smart contracts to establish traceability and automate supply chain logic. A Solidity-based Ethereum smart contract is developed and deployed on the Sepolia testnet to register users and log batches and to handle ownership transfers. The Internet of Things (IoT) data stream is simulated using structured datasets to mimic real-world device behavior, ensuring that the system is tested under realistic conditions. Our performance evaluation on 1000 transactions shows that the model incurs low transaction costs and demonstrates predictable efficiency behavior of the smart contract in decentralized conditions. Over 95% of the 1000 simulated transactions incurred a gas fee of less than ETH 0.001. The proposed architecture is also scalable and modular, providing a foundation for future deployment with live IoT integrations and off-chain data storage. Overall, the results highlight the system’s ability to improve transparency and auditability, automate enforcement, and enhance consumer confidence in the origin and handling of coffee products.
