The performance and reliability of lithium thionyl chloride (Li/SOCl2) batteries are significantly affected by temperature, but the reliability level and failure mechanisms of Li/SOCl2 batteries remain unclear. In this study, Weibull distribution statistics were used to infer the life expectancy of Li/SOCl2 batteries at different temperatures. Additionally, the battery failure mechanism was analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It is found that under the discharge condition of 7.5 kΩ load, the mean time between failures (MTBF) and reliable life of the battery decreased with increasing operating temperature. Under the discharge condition of 750 Ω load, the MTBF of the battery peaked at 60 °C. Furthermore, the influence of temperature on the voltage output characteristics of Li/SOCl2 batteries and the voltage hysteresis were analyzed. Both the battery output voltage and the hysteresis effect increased with rising temperature. This is because high temperature accelerates internal battery reactions, thus altering the formation process of the passivation film on the lithium metal negative electrode. Full article

This paper contributes to the classification of flag-transitive symmetric 2-(v,k,λ) designs with λ prime. We investigate the structure of flag-transitive, point-quasiprimitive automorphism groups (G) of such 2-designs by applying the classification of quasiprimitive permutation groups. It is shown that the automorphism groups (G) have either an abelian socle or a non-abelian simple socle. Moreover, according to the classification of finite simple groups, we demonstrate that point-quasiprimitivity implies point-primitivity of G, except when the socle of G is PSLn(q). Full article

The aim of this work is to investigate some algebraic structures of objects which are defined and related to a manifold. Consider L to be a smooth manifold and Γ(TL) to be the module of smooth vector fields over the ring of smooth functions C(L). We prove that the module Γ(TL) is projective and finitely generated, but it is not semisimple. Therefore, it has a proper socle and nonzero Jacobson radical. Furthermore, we prove that this module is reflexive by showing that it is isomorphic to its bidual. Additionally, we investigate the structure of the Lie algebra of smooth vector fields. We give some questions and open problems at the end of the paper. We believe that our results are important because they link two different disciplines in modern pure mathematics. Full article

Used in solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) for peptides with an acid termination, the 2-chlorotrityl chloride (2-CTC) resin is highly susceptible to moisture, leading to reduced resin loading and lower synthetic yields. It is therefore recommended that the resin be activated with thionyl chloride (SOCl2) before peptide assembly. Here we present an optimized procedure for resin activation that minimizes the use of SOCl2 as the activation reagent and reduces the activation time. Additionally, we demonstrate the feasibility of reusing the 2-CTC resin when following the activation protocol, achieving comparable results to the first usage of the resin. Moreover, we achieved different degrees of resin activation by varying the amount of SOCl2. For instance, the use of 2% SOCl2 in anhydrous dichloromethane (DCM) allowed up to 44% activation of the resin, thereby making it suitable for the synthesis of longer peptides. Alternatively, employing 25% SOCl2 in anhydrous DCM resulted in up to 80% activation with a reaction time of only 5 min in both cases. Full article

Pyrimidines play an important role in modern medical fields. They have a wide spectrum of biological activities such as antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-allergic, anti-leishmanial, antioxidant agents and others. Moreover, in recent years, 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)ones have attracted researchers to synthesize them via Biginelli reaction and evaluate their antihypertensive activities as bioisosters of Nifedipine, which is a famous calcium channel blocker. Our new target compounds were prepared through one-pot reaction of thiourea 1, ethyl acetoacetate 2 and/or 1H-indole-2-carbaldehyde, 2-chloroquinoline-3-carbaldehyde, 1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carbaldehyde, 3ac in acid medium (HCl) yielding pyrimidines 4ac, which in turn were hydrolyzed to carboxylic acid derivatives 5ac which were chlorinated by SOCl2 to give acyl chlorides 6ac. Finally, the latter were reacted with some selected aromatic amines, namely, aniline, p-toluidine and p-nitroaniline, producing amides 7ac, 8ac, and 9ac. The purity of the prepared compounds was examined via TLC monitoring, and structures were confirmed by different spectroscopic techniques such as IR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and mass spectroscopy. The in vivo evaluation of the antihypertensive activity revealed that compounds 4c, 7a, 7c, 8c, 9b and 9c had comparable antihypertensive properties with Nifedipine. On the other hand, the in vitro calcium channel blocking activity was evaluated by IC50 measurement and results revealed that compounds 4c, 7a, 7b, 7c, 8c, 9a, 9b, and 9c had comparable calcium channel blocking activity with the reference Nifedipine. Based on the aforementioned biological results, we selected compounds 8c and 9c to be docked onto Ryanodine and dihydropyridine receptors. Furthermore, we developed a structure–activity relationship. The designed compounds in this study show promising activity profiles in reducing blood pressure and as calcium channel blockers, and could be considered as new potential antihypertensive and/or antianginal agents. Herein, dithiocarbamate-modified biochar (BC-HDTC) was successfully synthesized with nitric acid (HNO3), thionyl chloride (SOCl2), branched PEI and carbon disulfide (CS2). The effective anchoring of amine and dithiocarbamate groups onto the surface of the biochar was proven by SEM, FTIR, XPS, N2 adsorption–desorption experiment. The batch experiments demonstrated BC-HDTC can selectively remove 98% Pb(II) within multi-metals solution when pH = 5, T = 30 °C. The impact of variations on the BC-HDTC were researched (pH, contact duration, Pb(II) original concentration).The sorption kinetics (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, intra-particle diffusion model) and isotherm modeling (Langmuir, Freundlich, and tempkin models) of Pb(II) on BC-HDTC were investigated. The adsorption process was depicted to attain equilibrium in less than 20 min and to fit the Langmuir isotherms and pseudo-2nd-order kinetics satisfactorily. The complexation of functional groups of HDTC (amine/imine and dithiocarbamate) with Pb(II) as well as the ion exchange between Na(I) and Pb(II) are the main adsorption mechanisms. Pb(II) onto BC-HDTC was endothermic and spontaneous, according to thermodynamic parameters. After 4 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, Pb removal efficiency of BC- HDTC remained over 90%. This work revealed the significant potential for Pb(II) contamination of BC-HDTC, a valuable and reusable adsorbent. Full article

To develop potent and safer analgesics, we designed and synthesized a novel enantiomerically enriched ethereal analog of (R)-iso-moramide, namely 2-[(2R)-2-(morpholin-4-yl)propoxy]-2,2-diphenyl-1-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)ethan-1-one. The titled active agent can potentially serve as a powerful synthetic opiate with an improved affinity and selectivity toward opioid receptors (ORs). This hypothesis was postulated based on docking studies regarding the respective complexes between the designed ligand and µ-OR, δ-OR, and κ-OR. The key step of the elaborated asymmetric synthesis of novel analog involves lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of racemic 1-(morpholin-4-yl)propan-2-ol, which was accomplished on a 10 g scale via an enantioselective transesterification employing vinyl acetate as an irreversible acyl donor in tert-butyl methyl ether (MTBE) as the co-solvent. Next, the obtained homochiral (S)-(+)-morpholino-alcohol (>99% ee) was functionalized into corresponding chloro-derivative using thionyl chloride (SOCl2) or the Appel reaction conditions. Further transformation with N-diphenylacetyl-1-pyrrolidine under phase-transfer catalysis (PTC) conditions using O2-saturated DMSO/NaOH mixture as an oxidant furnished the desired levorotatory isomer of the title product isolated in 26% total yield after three steps, and with 89% ee. The absolute configuration of the key-intermediate of (R)-(–)-iso-moramide was determined using a modified form of Mosher’s methodology. The preparation of the optically active dextrorotatory isomer of the titled product (87% ee) was carried out essentially by the same route, utilizing (R)-(–)-1-(morpholin-4-yl)propan-2-ol (98% ee) as a key intermediate. The spectroscopic characterization of the ethereal analog of iso-moramide and the enantioselective retention relationship of its enantiomers using HPLC on the cellulose-based chiral stationary phase were performed. Moreover, as a proof-of-principle, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the synthesized 2-[(2R)-2-(morpholin-4-yl)propoxy]-2,2-diphenyl-1-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)ethan-1-one is reported. In an attempt to find a potential application of cell culture harvesting, a novel method for the preparation of an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) thermosensitive hydrogel was studied. An electron accelerator was used as the electron beam (EB) radiation source, and acrylamide (AAm) was first grafted onto the pre-irradiated polypropylene (PP) sheet. Then, the grafting layer of poly (acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) (P (AAm-co-AN)) was obtained by the partial dehydration of the acylamino group into the cyano group in the solution mixture of sulfoxide chloride (SOCl2) and dimethyl formamide (DMF). The effects of the absorbed dose, AAm concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the degree of grafting were studied, respectively. The effect of the SOCl2 concentration on the conversion degree of the cyano group from the acylamino group was studied, followed by the temperature of the UCST. The UCST properties of the grafted samples with P (AAm-co-AN) were studied by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), respectively. The cytotoxicities of the hydrogels against cells were verified by CCK-8 studies. Full article

Chemical accidents in rivers may be triggered by natural or anthropogenic causes and refer to the flow of large quantities of hazardous chemicals into rivers. In South Korea, domestic water is sourced from large rivers, such as the Nakdong River. However, owing to rapid industrialization, industrial facilities have become heavily concentrated in the middle and upper reaches of the Nakdong River. Therefore, severe problems could arise if harmful chemicals are leaked from industrial facilities into the river, and this contaminated river water is supplied to cities. Quantitative evaluation based on instrumental analysis during chemical accidents and prediction research based on modeling is actively being conducted however, research on the initial response is insufficient. Therefore, in this study, the variations in pH and EC were analyzed according to their chemical concentrations for seven chemicals. These seven chemicals are designated accident-preparedness substances that frequently cause chemical spills in South Korea. Additionally, we evaluated the possibility of identifying unknown substances by comparing the variations in pH and EC and statistics while diluting unknown substances. Thus, the potential of pH and EC as alternative indicators for detecting and identifying chemicals was evaluated in this study. NaF, NH4HF2, NaCN, and NH4OH were classified by comparing their spatial distributions in a pH-EC relation curve. However, H2SO4, HCl, and SOCl2 showed similar spatial distributions in the pH-EC curves and were difficult to identify. The results of this study provide information for chemical detection and identification using alternative sensors that permit easy and rapid field measurements in the event of a chemical spill and could be used as preliminary data for rapidly responding to accidents. The main purpose of the study was the development of a new method for synthesis of 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine derivatives in a one-pot manner using the reaction between a thiosemicarbazide and carboxylic acid without toxic additives such as POCl3 or SOCl2. The reaction was investigated in the presence of polyphosphate ester (PPE). It was found that, in the presence of PPE, the reaction between the thiosemicarbazide and carboxylic acid proceeds in one-pot through three steps with the formation of corresponding 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole. Using the developed approach five, 2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazoles were synthesized. The structures of all compounds were proven by mass spectrometry, IR, and NMR spectroscopies. Full article

From the geomorphological cartography, the geometric and spatial distribution of the quaternary forms and deposits are analyzed, with special relevance to the fluvial terraces that allow obtaining the chronology of the successive landscape changes of the course of the Tagus River attributed to the activity of the Fault of Alentejo-Plasencia (APF). The “Appalachian” relief of Monfragüe National Park, constituting a series of quartzitic combs with direction NW, between which they find slopes, hills and valleys following the same direction, for the dismantlement of the Cenozoic cover that was covering the substratum (still present in the central sector) and encasement of the Rivers Tagus and Tiétar. The remains of fluvial terraces inside and outside the Park stand out at different heights and so they originate from different times and show different landscapes along the routes of the Tagus river and its movement over time. In the north end (basin of the Campo Arañuelo), there are remains of ten fluvial terraces of relative importance attributed to the River Tagus (with heights relative to the thalweg between 120 and 20 m). In the south edge, there are eight levels attributed to a former fluvial drainage network, which assimilates to the River Tagus, with the more recent level reaching over 280 m on the current river. Neotectonics readjustments that rejuvenated the relief produced the elevation of the socle and cover, at the time of diversions in the path of the fluvial network, up to the structure and encasement (for supertax and/or antecedence). During the Quaternary, the activity of the Alentejo-Plasencia Fault (APF) has given rise to palaeogeographic changes in the fluvial valley of the Tagus River. During the ancient Lower Pleistocene, its course passed south of the current one (Talaván-Torrejón el Rubio basin); at the end of the Lower Pleistocene, it came out crossing the syncline through the Boquerón porthole, and the meander that bordered the town of Almaraz was abandoned; at the beginning of the Middle Pleistocene, it changes its direction, from NE–SW to SE–NW, leaving the porthole and joining the Tiétar river within the Park; later it moves somewhat to the south. These changes in the route and the anomalous fitting of the course of the Tagus River into the Paleozoic substrate, have been attributed to the APF, which, through impulses, has had a great activity from the Lower Pleistocene to the Middle Pleistocene. Preliminary data indicates that the Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19) pandemic may have a substantial impact on mental health and well-being. We assessed mental health in response to the lockdown in Germany between 1 April 2020 and 15 April 2020 using a cross-sectional online survey (n = 3545) with a mixed-methods approach. We found increased levels of psychosocial distress (Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) stress module), anxiety, depressive symptoms (PHQ-4), irritability, and a decrease in overall well-being (WHO-Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5)), sense of coherence (Short Form of the Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC-L9)), sexual contentment, and sleep quality. The four-week-prevalence of interpersonal violence was yet at 5% and included verbal, physical, and sexual violence. Participants reported finding comfort in family, friends, conversation, exercise, and activity. Findings are also in line with research showing that women seem to have more trouble coping with the pandemic and lockdown measures. Our observations demonstrate that the COVID-19 pandemic and related measures lead to a mental health burden even in a highly developed Western country and should, therefore, be taken seriously. The findings for interpersonal violence are alarming. Thus, we should sharpen our focus on the matter and activate and enhance supporting systems to help protect those affected. Full article

The pheromones constitute a decisive component in the strategies for the conservation of stored foods. In Ecuador, several studies are developing, under eco sustainable conditions, on synthetic pheromones and their applicability in the control of species Rhyzopertha dominica, which causes severe damage in stored grains. Previously reported information details the use of expensive reagents for carrying out the synthesis of the aggregation pheromone of this species. Using propionic and isobutiric aldehydes as starting substrates by means of aldolic condensation, selective oxidation with Ag2O-methanol of monoenic aldehydes, treatment with SOCl2, and esterification with 2-pentanol, the respective components of the racemic aggregation pheromone of this species were synthesized. Functionalized, Vertically Super-Aligned Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Potential Biomedical Applications

Currently, there is a lack of ultrasensitive diagnostic tool to detect some diseases such as ischemic stroke, thereby impacting effective and efficient intervention for such diseases at an embryonic stage. In addition to the lack of proper detection of the neurological diseases, there is also a challenge in the treatment of these diseases. Carbon nanotubes have a potential to be employed in solving the theragnostic challenges in those diseases. In this study, carbon nanotubes were successfully synthesized for potential application in the detection and treatment of the neurological diseases such as ischemic stroke. Vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (VA-MWCNTs) were purified with HCl, carboxylated with H2SO4:HNO3 (3:1) and acylated with SOCl2 for use in potential targeting studies and for the design of a carbon-based electrode for possible application in the diagnosis of neurological diseases, including ischemic stroke. MWCNTs were washed, extracted from the filter membranes and dried in a vacuum oven at 60 °C for 24 h prior to functionalization and PEGylation. CNTs were characterized by SEM, TEM, OCA, DLS, CV and EIS. The HCl-treated CNT obtained showed an internal diameter, outer diameter and thickness of 8 nm, 34 nm and 75 µm, while these parameters for the H2SO4-HNO3-treated CNT were 8 nm, 23 nm and 41µm, respectively. PEGylated CNT demonstrated zeta potential, polydispersive index and particle size distribution of 6 mV, 0.41 and 98 nm, respectively. VA-MWCNTs from quartz tube were successfully purified, carboxylated, acylated and PEGylated for potential functionalization for use in targeting studies. For designing the carbon-based electrode, VA-MWCNTs on silicon wafer were successfully incorporated into epoxy resin for diagnostic applications. Functionalized MWCNTs were nontoxic towards PC-12 neuronal cells. In conclusion, vertically super-aligned MWCNTs have been successfully synthesized and functionalized for possible theragnostic biomedical applications in neurological disorders such as ischemic stroke.
