This study examines the spatial distribution of grain yield in the Songnen Plain Agro-Pastoral Zone in Heilongjiang Province from 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021, using Kriging interpolation as the primary method. Ordinary Kriging (exponential kernel/semivariogram, step = 13) achieved optimal accuracy (RMSE = 0.856), outperforming Co-Kriging. Incorporating all covariates lowered precision due to weak spatial autocorrelation in slope and aspect, while limiting covariates to elevation and soil type improved results. Spatial patterns revealed a southwest-to-northeast gradient. Over time, yields increased notably in the southwest and northern areas, with Wudalianchi rising by 259.71%, but declining locally, such as a 12.20% drop in Shuangcheng. Environmental factors like slope and soil showed spatially heterogeneous influences, interacting with policies and socioeconomic variables. The grain yield center shifted slightly northward. Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) further validated these spatial patterns. These findings provide valuable insights into covariate selection and spatial drivers, supporting more precise agricultural planning and management in the region. Full article

The construction of prefabricated concrete houses in Ecuador poses significant challenges in terms of environmental and social sustainability, amid growing housing demand and the urgent need to mitigate adverse impacts associated with the construction processes and materials. In particular, the lack of a comprehensive assessment of these impacts limits the development of effective strategies to improve the sustainability of the sector. In addition, in rural areas, the design of flexible and adapted solutions is required, as evidenced by recent studies in the Andean area. This study conducts a comprehensive assessment of the impacts and sustainability indicators for prefabricated concrete houses, employing international certification systems such as LEED, BREEAM, and VERDE, to validate various relevant environmental and social indicators. The methodology used is the Hierarchical Analytical Process (AHP), which facilitates the prioritization of impacts through paired comparisons, establishing priorities for decision-making. Hydrological, soil, faunal, floral, and socioeconomic aspects are evaluated in a regional context. The results reveal that the most critical environmental impacts in Ecuador are climate change (28.77%), water depletion (13.73%) and loss of human health (19.17%), generation of non-hazardous waste 8.40%, changes in biodiversity 5%, extraction of mineral resources 12.07%, financial risks 5.33%, loss of aquatic life 4.67%, and loss of fertility 3%, as derived from hierarchical and standardization matrices. Despite being grounded in a literature review and being constrained due to the scarcity of previous projects in the country, this research provides a useful framework for the environmental evaluation and planning of prefabricated housing. To conclude, this study enhances existing methodologies of environmental assessment techniques and practices in the construction of precast concrete and promotes the development of sustainable and socially responsible housing in Ecuador. Food loss and waste are critical global issues, particularly in developing economies where they exacerbate food insecurity and environmental degradation. This study focuses on fruit and vegetable loss (FVL) in retail and wholesale markets in North Lebanon, a region marked by socio-economic challenges and infrastructural deficiencies. The research aims to identify the underlying drivers of FVL, assess current management practices, and identify aspects impacting it. Data was collected through surveys of seventy wholesalers and retailers employing descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression for analysis. The findings reveal that 85.7% of the sample generate little or no FVL. Being a retailer or wholesaler, operating on a small or large scale, or being open 24/7 or part-time does not affect FVL. Conversely, inadequate display and storage, hot weather, and pricing practices significantly impact FVL. The market faces challenges such as low consumer purchasing capacity, financial difficulties, legal constraints, and lack of knowledge. Various practices are used to prevent FVL, including strategic supply chain decisions, price reductions, and donations to charities. The study underscores the need for improved infrastructure, financial support, and regulatory frameworks to mitigate FVL, thereby enhancing food security and environmental sustainability in North Lebanon. Background: Greek islands face mounting pressures on their marine water resources due to tourism growth, agricultural runoff, climate change, and emerging pollutants. Safeguarding seawater quality is critical for ecosystem integrity, public health, and the sustainability of tourism-based economies. Objectives: This scoping review synthesizes and evaluates the existing research on seawater quality in the Greek islands, with emphasis on pollution sources, monitoring methodologies, and socio-environmental impacts, while highlighting the gaps in addressing emerging contaminants and aligning with sustainable development goals. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in Scopus, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Web of Science, and PubMed for English- and Greek-language studies published over the last two to three decades. The search terms covered physical, chemical, and biological aspects of seawater quality, as well as emerging pollutants. The PRISMA-ScR guidelines were followed, resulting in the inclusion of 178 studies. The data were categorized by pollutant type, location, water quality indicators, monitoring methods, and environmental, health, and tourism implications. Results: This review identifies agricultural runoff, untreated wastewater, maritime traffic emissions, and microplastics as key pollution sources. Emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, PFASs, and nanomaterials have been insufficiently studied. While monitoring technologies such as remote sensing, fuzzy logic, and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are increasingly applied, these efforts remain fragmented and geographically uneven. Notable gaps exist in the quantification of socio-economic impact, source apportionment, and epidemiological assessments. Conclusions: The current monitoring and management strategies in the Greek islands have produced high bathing water quality in many areas, as reflected in the Blue Flag program, yet they do not fully address the spatial, temporal, and technological challenges posed by climate change and emerging pollutants. Achieving long-term sustainability requires integrated, region-specific water governance linked to the UN SDGs, with stronger emphasis on preventive measures, advanced monitoring, and cross-sector collaboration. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events pose significant challenges to mountain communities, particularly in terms of flash flood risks. This study presents a framework for stress testing and evaluating flood resilience in mountain communities through the integration of high-resolution InfoWorks ICM two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling and systematic resilience assessment. The framework makes three key innovations: (1) multi-scale temporal stress scenarios combining short-duration extreme events (1–2 h) with long-duration persistent events (24 h) and historical extremes; (2) integrated infrastructure–drainage stress analysis that explicitly models roads’ dual role as critical infrastructure and emergency drainage channels; and (3) dynamic resilience quantification under multiple stressors across 15 systematically designed stress conditions. Using Western Beijing as a case study, the model is validated, achieving Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency values exceeding 0.9, demonstrating its robust capability in simulating complex mountainous terrain flood processes. Through systematic analysis of fifteen rainfall scenarios designed based on Chicago rainfall patterns and historical events (including the July 2023 Haihe River basin flood), encompassing various intensities (30–200 mm/h), durations (1 h, 2 h, 24 h), and return periods (10, 50, 100 years), the key findings include the following: (1) A rainfall intensity of 60 mm/h represents a crucial threshold for system performance, beyond which significant impacts on community infrastructure emerge, with built-up areas experiencing inundation depths of 0.27–0.4 m that exceed safe passage limits. (2) Road networks become primary drainage channels during intense precipitation, with velocities exceeding 5 m/s in village roads and exceeding 5 m/s in country road sections, creating significant hazard potential. (3) Four major risk spots were identified with distinct waterlogging patterns, characterized by maximum depths ranging from 0.8 to 2.0 m and recovery periods varying from 2 to 12 hours depending on the topographic confluence effects and drainage efficiency. (4) The system demonstrates strong recovery capability, achieving >90% recovery within 3–6 hours for short-duration events, while showing vulnerability to extreme scenarios, with performance declining to 0.75–0.80, highlighting the coupling effects between water depth and flow velocity in steep terrain. This research provides quantitative insights for flood risk management and for enhancing community resilience in mountainous regions, offering valuable guidance for infrastructure improvement, emergency response optimization, and sustainable community development. This study primarily focuses on physical resilience aspects, with socioeconomic and institutional dimensions representing important directions for future research. Full article

Coastal zones face mounting pressures from rapid urban expansion and ecological degradation, posing significant challenges to achieving synergistic carbon storage and emissions reduction under China’s “dual carbon” goals. Yet, the identification of spatially explicit zones of carbon synergy (high storage–low emissions) and conflict (high emissions–low storage) in these regions remains limited. This study integrates the PLUS (Patch-generating Land Use Simulation), InVEST (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs), and OPGD (optimal parameter-based GeoDetector) models to evaluate the impacts of land-use/cover change (LUCC) on coastal carbon dynamics in China from 2000 to 2030. Four contrasting land-use scenarios (natural development, economic development, ecological protection, and farmland protection) were simulated to project carbon trajectories by 2030. From 2000 to 2020, rapid urbanization resulted in a 29,929 km2 loss of farmland and a 43,711 km2 increase in construction land, leading to a net carbon storage loss of 278.39 Tg. Scenario analysis showed that by 2030, ecological and farmland protection strategies could increase carbon storage by 110.77 Tg and 110.02 Tg, respectively, while economic development may further exacerbate carbon loss. Spatial analysis reveals that carbon conflict zones were concentrated in major urban agglomerations, whereas spatial synergy zones were primarily located in forest-rich regions such as the Zhejiang–Fujian and Guangdong–Guangxi corridors. The OPGD results demonstrate that carbon synergy was driven largely by interactions between socioeconomic factors (e.g., population density and nighttime light index) and natural variables (e.g., mean annual temperature, precipitation, and elevation). These findings emphasize the need to harmonize urban development with ecological conservation through farmland protection, reforestation, and low-emission planning. This study, for the first time, based on the PLUS-Invest-OPGD framework, proposes the concepts of “carbon synergy” and “carbon conflict” regions and their operational procedures. Compared with the single analysis of the spatial distribution and driving mechanisms of carbon stocks or carbon emissions, this method integrates both aspects, providing a transferable approach for assessing the carbon dynamic processes in coastal areas and guiding global sustainable planning. To mitigate persistent urban–rural disparities and facilitate comprehensive rural development, the Chinese government institutionalized the Rural Revitalization Strategy. This national policy framework systematically addresses five critical domains of rural development: (1) industrial revitalization, (2) talent revitalization, (3) organizational capacity building, (4) cultural heritage preservation, and (5) ecological conservation. Among them, talent cultivation serves as both a fundamental objective and critical resource for the sustainable rural economic transformation. However, the existing research and practice have disproportionately emphasized industrial and ecological aspects, largely neglecting the acute talent shortage. This study bridges this gap by adopting a population mobility lens to categorize young talent types contributing to Chinese rural economic transformation and analyze their mobility trajectories and resource exchange dynamics. Drawing on an integrated theoretical framework combining Push–Pull Theory and Existence–Relatedness–Growth Theory, as well as empirical evidences from Yuan Village in Shaanxi Province, this research has four key findings. First, there are three distinct young talent categories that have emerged in Chinese rural economic transformation: urban-to-rural young talents, native young talents, and rural-to-rural young talents. It is noteworthy that the rural-to-rural young talent represents a novel flow pattern that can expand our conventional understandings of Chinese population mobility. Second, differential push–pull factors shape each category’s migration decisions, subsequently influenced by their existence needs, social relatedness, and growth requirements as outlined in ERG Theory. Third, through heterogeneous resource exchanges with villagers, committees, and communities, these talents negotiate their positions and satisfy their expectations within the rural socio-economic system. Fourth, unmet exchange expectations may precipitate talent outflow, which will further pose sustainability challenges to revitalization efforts. Additionally, the long-term impacts of the intensified social interactions between talent groups and local residents, as well as their generalizability, require further examination. Full article

This study contributes to scientific theory by analyzing the models proposed within the framework of circular agriculture to determine how the three dimensions of sustainability—environmental, economic, and social—are integrated into their implementation. A systematic review was conducted on articles published between 2016 and 2025, indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases, as well as the relevant grey literature. The methodology employed an extensive content analysis designed to minimize bias, applying filters related to specific knowledge areas to delimitate the search scope and enhance the precision of the research. The findings reveal that the research on circular agriculture models is predominantly grounded in the principles of the circular economy and its associated indicators. Moreover, these models tend to focus on environmental metrics, often neglecting a comprehensive exploration of the social and economic dimensions of sustainable development. It can be concluded that a significant gap persists in the literature regarding the circularity of agriculture and its socio-economic impacts and the role of regulatory frameworks, aspects that future research must address in order to achieve sustainability in circular agriculture. Road networks are essential for access, resource distribution, and population evacuation during natural events. These challenges are pronounced in rural areas, where network redundancy is limited and communities may have social disparities. While traditional risk management systems often focus on the physical consequences of hazard events alone, specialized literature increasingly suggests the development of a more comprehensive approach for risk assessment, where not only physical aspects associated with infrastructure, such as damage level or disruptions, but also the social and economic attributes of the affected population are considered. Consequently, this paper proposes a Vulnerability Access Index (VAI) to support road network decision-making that integrates the social vulnerability of rural communities exposed to natural events, their accessibility to nearby critical infrastructure, and physical risk. The research methodology considers (i) the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) calculation based on socioeconomic variables, (ii) Importance Index estimation (Iimp) to evaluate access to critical infrastructure, (iii) VAI calculation combining SVI and Iimp, and (iv) application to a case study in the influence area of the Villarrica volcano in southern Chile. The results show that when incorporating social variables and accessibility, infrastructure criticality varies significantly compared to the infrastructure criticality assessment based solely on physical risk, modifying the decision-making regarding road infrastructure robustness and resilience improvements. Although organizational resilience is well established, refining the systematic quantitative evaluation of health systems resilience (HSR) remains an ongoing opportunity for advancement. Research either focuses on individual HSR indicators, such as social welfare policy, public expenditure, health insurance, healthcare quality, and technology, or broadly examines socio-economic factors, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive methodological approach. This study employed the Slacks-Based Measure (SBM) within Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to analyze efficiency by maximizing outputs. It systematically examined key HSR factors across countries, providing insights for improved policymaking and resource allocation. Taking a five-year (2016–2020) dataset that covered 55 to 56 countries and evaluating 17 indicators across governance, health systems, and economic aspects, the paper presents that all sixteen top-ranked countries with a perfect efficiency score of 1 belonged to the high-income group, with ten in Europe, highlighting regional HSR differences. This paper concludes that adequate economic resources form the foundation of HSR and ensure stability and sustained progress. A properly supported healthcare workforce is essential for significantly enhancing health systems and delivering quality care. Last, effective governance and the equitable allocation of resources are crucial for fostering sustainable development and strengthening HSR. Full article

Background: School-based tobacco control policies are critical for preventing youth tobacco use. While many districts adopt formal policies to create smoke- and vape-free environments, the degree to which these policies are enforced at the school level may vary, influencing their effectiveness. Little is known about how consistently such policies are implemented across schools within urban school districts. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the existence and enforcement of school-level tobacco control policies in an urban public school system, using Baltimore City schools as a case example. Methods: We conducted a survey of school personnel from 20 high schools in Baltimore City in 2024. The survey instrument assessed the presence and enforcement of policies related to tobacco use prevention, communication, signage, disciplinary actions, and institutional support. Descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages) were used to summarize responses. Spearman correlations were also used for bivariate correlations. Additional school-level and neighborhood-level contextual data were collected from the internet (neighborhood socioeconomic status and school performance). Results: While many policies existed across the 20 participating schools, their enforcement was widely inconsistent. Most schools reported the existence of policies prohibiting tobacco use in school buildings (60%) and vehicles (55%). However, few schools had visible tobacco-free signage (35%) or offered cessation programs (15%). Communication of policies to students (70%) and staff (65%) was the most commonly enforced aspect of tobacco control policies. Conclusions: Findings suggest that while tobacco control policies may be adopted across urban school systems, their enforcement at the school level remains uneven. Greater attention may be needed to support policy implementation and to reduce variability in school-level practices. Baltimore City serves as a useful case study to understand these challenges and identify opportunities for strengthening school-based tobacco prevention efforts. Full article

Is Platform Capitalism Socially Sustainable?

This theoretical essay aims to analyze some of the socio-economic innovations introduced by Platform Capitalism Specifically, it focuses on two main aspects: first, the digital platform as a radical organizational innovation. Digital platforms represent a structural novelty in the market economy, signaling a new organization of production and labor. Second, the essay examines the role of platforms in directly generating value through the concept of “network value”. To this end, it explores the function of “business intelligence” as a strategic and competitive tool. Finally, the paper discusses the key issues associated with platform capitalism, which could threaten its social sustainability and contribute to economic and financial instability. These issues include the increasing commodification of everyday activities, the devaluation of paid labor in favor of free production driven by platform users (the so-called prosumers), and the emergence of proprietary and financial monopolies. Hence, digital platforms do not inherently ensure comprehensive social and environmental sustainability unless supported by targeted economic policy interventions. Conclusively, it is emphasized that defining robust social welfare frameworks—which account for emerging value creation processes—is imperative. Simultaneously, policymakers must incentivize the proliferation of cooperative platforms capable of fostering experimental circular economy models aligned with ecological sustainability. Full article

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains Europe’s leading cause of mortality, responsible for >45% of deaths. Beyond established risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, smoking, obesity), psychosocial elements—depression, anxiety, financial stress, personality traits, and trauma—significantly influence CVD development and progression. Behavioural Cardiology addresses this connection by systematically incorporating psychosocial factors into prevention and rehabilitation protocols. This review examines the HEARTBEAT model, developed by Greece’s first Behavioural Cardiology Unit, which aligns with current European guidelines. The model serves dual purposes: primary prevention (targeting at-risk individuals) and secondary prevention (treating established CVD patients). It is a personalised medicine approach that integrates psychosocial profiling with traditional risk assessment, utilising tailored evaluation tools, caregiver input, and multidisciplinary collaboration to address personality traits, emotional states, socioeconomic circumstances, and cultural contexts. The model emphasises three critical implementation aspects: (1) digital health integration, (2) cost-effectiveness analysis, and (3) healthcare system adaptability. Compared to international approaches, it highlights research gaps in psychosocial interventions and advocates for culturally sensitive adaptations, particularly in resource-limited settings. Special consideration is given to older populations requiring tailored care strategies. Ultimately, Behavioural Cardiology represents a transformative systems-based approach bridging psychology, lifestyle medicine, and cardiovascular treatment. This integration may prove pivotal for optimising chronic disease management through personalised interventions that address both biological and psychosocial determinants of cardiovascular health. A Bibliographic Analysis of Multi-Risk Assessment Methodologies for Natural Disaster Prevention

In light of the increasing frequency and intensity of natural phenomena, whether climatic or telluric, the relevance of multi-risk assessment approaches has become an important issue for understanding and estimating the impacts of disasters on complex socioeconomic systems. Two aspects contribute to the worsening of this situation. First, climate change has heightened the incidence and, in conjunction, the seriousness of geohazards that often occur with each other. Second, the complexity of these impacts on societies is drastically exacerbated by the interconnections between urban areas, industrial sites, power or water networks, and vulnerable ecosystems. In front of the recent research on this problem, and the necessity to figure out the best scientific positioning to address it, we propose, through this review analysis, to revisit existing literature on multi-risk assessment methodologies. By this means, we emphasize the new recent research frameworks able to produce determinant advances. Our selection corpus identifies pertinent scientific publications from various sources, including personal bibliographic databases, but also OpenAlex outputs and Web of Science contents. We evaluated these works from different criteria and key findings, using indicators inspired by the PRISMA bibliometric method. Through this comprehensive analysis of recent advances in multi-risk assessment approaches, we highlight main issues that the scientific community should address in the coming years, we identify the different kinds of geohazards concerned, the way to integrate them in a multi-risk approach, and the characteristics of the presented case studies. The results underscore the urgency of developing robust, adaptable methodologies, effectively able to capture the complexities of multi-risk scenarios. This challenge should be at the basis of the keys and solutions contributing to more resilient socioeconomic systems. Full article

Background/Objectives: Educational background is an aspect of socio-economic status, that may be associated with higher caries risk. This study aimed to investigate differences in caries prevalence between different school types for older adolescents in Greifswald, Germany. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected as part of compulsory dental school examinations between 2020 and 2023. Oral health status was assessed according to WHO criteria by six calibrated examiners and reported as mean D3MFT (D3: dentin caries, M: missing, F: filled, SD/±: standard deviation). To compare educational backgrounds, the adolescents were divided into two groups according to their age and type of school (11–15 and 16–18 years old). Results: The study included 5816 adolescents (48.7% females) with a mean D3MFT of 0.65 (Q1–Q3: 0–1); 73.8% were clinically caries-free, having D3MFT = 0, confirming the polarization in caries experience with 2.5 ± 2.13 SaC index. The logistic regression model showed a significantly increased Odds Ratio for having caries in relation to age, being male, having plaque or gingivitis (p < 0.005). There were significant differences in caries experience and prevalence between school types, where high schools had the lowest D3MFT values in both age groups (0.39 ± 1.17 and 0.64 ± 1.49, respectively). The highest D3MFT values were in schools for special educational needs in younger adolescents (1.12 ± 1.9) and in vocational schools in older adolescents (1.63 ± 2.55). Conclusions: In a low-caries-risk population, there were significant differences in caries experience and prevalence among adolescents in different school types. Prevention strategies should aim to reduce the polarization in caries across different educational backgrounds in late adolescence. Full article
