Background and Objectives: Public health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly impact individuals and families, particularly in educational settings. School closures and changes in daily routines reduced students’ opportunities for learning and social interaction, affecting their mental health. Caregivers also faced increased responsibilities and stressors. This study aimed to evaluate a predictive model of mental health outcomes—specifically posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) and posttraumatic growth (PTG)—in Chilean schoolchildren and their caregivers. Materials and Methods: A total of 489 students (48% female sex; aged 10–17) from educational communities in various Chilean cities participated in the study, along with their caregivers (aged 21–69; 86.5% female), including mothers, fathers, and guardians. Mental health variables were assessed through self-report instruments. Hierarchical linear regression and path analyses were used to evaluate predictive models for PTSSs and PTG in students. Results: The model predicting PTSSs in students was significant. Key predictors included female sex, aggressive behavior, coping strategies such as keeping problems to oneself, cognitive avoidance, and intrusive rumination, and caregiver PTSSs. The model for PTG was also significant, with predictors including active problem-solving, communication, a positive attitude, and deliberate rumination. These results indicate distinct psychological processes underlying negative and positive outcomes following trauma. Conclusions: The findings underscore the complexity of mental health outcomes among school-aged children and the influence of caregiver well-being. The study highlights the importance of supporting both students and caregivers through targeted interventions. Multi-level strategies addressing emotional regulation, communication, and coping mechanisms may foster resilience and psychological growth in educational communities facing the aftermath of public health emergencies. Family-implemented interventions are evidence-based practices used to support a range of developmental outcomes, including social communication. Social communication is a broad construct that encompasses a variety of skills, from foundational abilities such as joint attention (i.e., two people attending to the same object or event) to more advanced behaviors like triadic interactions (i.e., responding to or initiating conversation that involves reciprocal interactions). In a previous study, we examined the effects of a brief, parent-implemented Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI), delivered over telepractice with video feedback coaching. The intervention resulted in increased strategy use by all mothers and the frequency of communication for three young children. In the current study, we conducted a secondary analysis of those data to explore whether the communication-focused intervention produced a collateral effect on activity-engaged triadic interactions (i.e., mother–child–mother or child–mother–child exchanges while simultaneously engaging in a joint activity). Although a functional relation was not established, critical theoretical implications are posed. These findings highlight the need for future research to break apart complex skills into subskills to detect any subtle changes in child outcomes. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed. Full article

The aim of this article is to present the social–ecological system (SES) as a unit of analysis for sustainable water management under conditions of anthropogenic pressure in Poland. In the face of accelerating climate change and growing human impacts, Polish water systems are exposed to increasing ecological stress and to material and immaterial losses affecting local communities. The SES approach provides an integrative analytical framework that links ecological and social components, enabling a holistic view of adaptive and governance processes at multiple spatial scales, from municipalities to areas that transcend administrative boundaries. Methodologically, this study triangulates three complementary approaches to strengthen explanatory inference. This conceptual SES review defines the analytical categories used in the paper, the bibliometric mapping (Scopus database with VOSviewer) identifies dominant research streams and underexplored themes, and the qualitative Polish case studies operationalize these categories to diagnose mechanisms, feedbacks, and governance vulnerabilities under anthropogenic pressure. The bibliometric analysis identifies the main research streams at the intersection of SES, water management and sustainable development, revealing thematic clusters related to climate change adaptation, environmental governance, ecosystem services and hydrological extremes. The case studies - the 2024 flood, the 2022 ecological disaster in the Odra River, and water deficits associated with lignite opencast mining in Eastern Wielkopolska - illustrate how anthropogenic pressure and climate-related hazards interact within local SES and expose governance gaps. Particular attention is paid to attitudes and social participation, understood as configurations of behaviors, knowledge and emotions that shape decision-making in local self-government, especially at the municipal level. This study argues that an SES-based perspective can contribute to building the resilience of water systems, improving the integration of ecological and social dimensions and supporting more sustainable water management in Poland. Pragmatic language is a core component of school-based social participation, yet children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Social Communication Disorder (SCD) frequently experience persistent difficulties in using language appropriately across everyday learning contexts. This study investigated the effectiveness of a culturally adapted, school-based immersive Virtual Reality (VR) learning program designed to enhance pragmatic language and social communication skills among Thai primary school children. Eleven participants aged 7–12 years completed a three-week, ten-session VR program that simulated authentic classroom, playground, and canteen interactions aligned with Thai sociocultural norms. Outcomes were measured using the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ) and the Pragmatic Behavior Observation Checklist (PBOC). While SCQ scores showed a small, non-significant reduction (p = 0.092), PBOC results demonstrated significant improvements in three foundational pragmatic domains: Initiation and Responsiveness (p = 0.032), Turn-Taking and Conversational Flow (p = 0.037), and Politeness and Register (p = 0.010). Other domains showed no significant changes. These findings suggest that immersive, culturally relevant VR environments can support early gains in core pragmatic language behaviors within educational settings, although broader social communication outcomes may require longer or more intensive learning experiences. The insect gut microbiome contributes to various host physiological processes and behaviors, such as digestion, nutrient absorption, immunity, mate choice, and fecundity. The social environment can shape gut microbial communities. Mixed-sex vs. female-only rearing is an important social context because it differs in exposure to the opposite sex and mating opportunities, which may in turn affect female physiology that may influence their gut microbiome. Despite the growing recognition of these social-microbial interactions, most studies have relied on 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing or qPCR, which provide only coarse taxonomic resolution and limited functional insight. In this study, we used whole-genome shotgun metagenomics to examine changes in microbial diversity and functional gene composition in the female field cricket Teleogryllus occipitalis (Serville) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) reared under two social conditions: mixed-sex rearing and female-only rearing. Species richness and diversity analyses revealed that community composition separated between females from mixed-sex and female-only rearing. Functional profiling indicated higher relative abundances of genes annotated to nutrient processing and inter-bacterial competition in females from mixed-sex rearing, whereas females from female-only rearing showed relative enrichment of genes annotated to stress resistance and nitrogen fixation. These findings provide a genome-resolved foundation for testing how social rearing conditions covary with gut microbiome composition and functional potential in female crickets. Full article

The global countryside constitutes a complex social–ecological system undergoing profound transformation. Understanding how such systems navigate transitions and achieve resilient, sustainable outcomes requires examining the interactions and adaptive behaviors of multiple actors. This study investigates the restructuring of rural China through a complex adaptive systems lens, focusing on the county of Lin’an in Zhejiang Province. We employ a middle-range theory and process-tracing approach to analyze the co-evolutionary pathways shaped by the interactions among three key agents: local governments, enterprises, and village communities. Our findings reveal distinct yet interdependent behavioral logics—local governments and enterprises primarily exhibit instrumental rationality, driven by political performance and profit maximization, respectively, while villages demonstrate value-rational behavior anchored in communal well-being and territorial identity. Crucially, this study identifies the emergence of a vital integrative mechanism, the “village operator” model, underpinned by the collective economy. This institutional innovation facilitates the synergistic linkage of interests and the integration of endogenous and exogenous resources, thereby mitigating conflicts and alienation. We argue that this multi-agent collaboration drives a synergistic restructuring of spatial, economic, and social subsystems. The case demonstrates that sustainable rural revitalization hinges not on the dominance of a single logic, but on the emergence of adaptive governance structures that effectively coordinate diverse actor logics. This process fosters systemic resilience, enabling the rural system to adapt to external pressures and internal changes. The Lin’an experience offers a transferable framework for understanding how coordinated multi-agent interactions can guide complex social–ecological systems toward sustainable transitions. Gaze behavior is a critical component of social interaction, reflecting emotional recognition and social regulation. While previous research has emphasized either situational influences (e.g., deception) or stable individual differences (e.g., attachment avoidance) on gaze patterns, studies exploring how these factors interact to shape gaze behavior in interpersonal contexts remain scarce. In this vein, the aim of the present study was to experimentally determine whether the gaze direction of individuals differs, with respect to their avoidant orientation, under changing situational conditions, including truthful and deceptive communication towards a counterpart. Using a within-person experimental design and the eye-tracking methodology, 31 participants took part in both rehearsed and spontaneous truth-telling and lie-telling tasks. Consistent with expectations, higher attachment avoidance was associated with significantly fewer fixations on emotionally expressive facial regions (e.g., mouth, jaw), and non-significant but visually consistent increases in fixations on the upper face (e.g., eyes) and background. These findings indicate that stable dispositional tendencies, rather than situational demands such as deception, predominantly shape gaze allocation during interpersonal interactions. They further provide a foundation for future investigations into the dynamic interplay between personality and situational context in interactive communicative settings. Full article

Objective: To conduct a scoping review of the global trends of adolescent health inequities and their social determinants from 2000 to 2024 and establish an evidence base for developing targeted intervention strategies. Methods: Guided by the rainbow model, we conducted a bibliometric analysis of 171 peer-reviewed articles related to adolescent health inequalities and their social determinants from the Web of Science Core Collection using CiteSpace 6.3.1 to summarize empirical evidence on how social determinants of health (SDOH) influence adolescents’ health behaviors (e.g., drinking) and health outcomes (e.g., overweight). Results: First, results showed a progressive increase in publications addressing social determinants of adolescent health from 2000 to 2024. Journals in public health and preventive medicine accounted for the highest proportion of articles, with the United States contributing the largest national share (21.05% of global output). Second, an analysis of keywords showed that previous studies mostly focused on the effects of socioeconomic status, family affluence on adolescent health (e.g., physical activity, mental health, and overweight). Third, inequalities in adolescent health were prevalent globally. Health behaviors (e.g., diet, oral health, and smoking) have received widespread attention and are influenced by socioeconomic status, family environment, and gender, whereas various indicators of adolescent health outcomes (e.g., obesity, mental health, and suicide) were highly correlated with family socioeconomic status. Conclusions: To reduce adolescent health disparities, it is important to deepen interdisciplinary research, consider the impact of emerging societal (e.g., digital environments) and environmental factors (e.g., climate change), and develop systematic and comprehensive intervention strategies that encompass the individual, family, school, community, and national levels. Marine plastic pollution poses severe ecological and economic threats, while people with disabilities (PwDs) often face limited meaningful employment opportunities. This study evaluated a unique social enterprise in Japan that addresses both challenges through upcycling marine plastic waste into accessories while providing employment for PwDs. Using the Social Return on Investment (SROI) methodology, we assessed the project’s social and environmental impacts over one year (2020). Data was collected through stakeholder surveys, interviews, and operational records. The analysis identified 15 outcomes across six stakeholder groups, including income generation, environmental awareness-raising, and sustained volunteer engagement. The project achieved an SROI ratio of 3.50, indicating that every JPY 1 invested generated JPY 3.50 in social value. Media exposure (30.5%), employment income (25.6%), and volunteer motivation (18.5%) comprised 74% of the total value. Despite processing only 50 kg of marine plastic annually, the project demonstrated significant symbolic impact through behavior change and public awareness. Key challenges include limited production capacity, wage constraints, and gender-biased consumer demographics. This case illustrates how small-scale, community-based upcycling initiatives can generate multidimensional social value by integrating environmental conservation with social inclusion objectives. Background/Objectives: Apathy, characterized by diminished motivation and reduced engagement in goal-directed behavior, is a prevalent concern among older adults, particularly in rural communities where opportunities for meaningful engagement may be limited. This study explores the preliminary impact of an in-person eBook club program on apathy among community-dwelling older adults in Northern British Columbia. Methods: This eight-week pilot single-group, pre-post mixed-methods study combined the use of eReaders to access weekly reading materials with facilitated in-person group discussions designed to foster emotional and social connection. Apathy was assessed using the 3-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-3A) before and after the program. Results: A Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a statistically significant reduction in apathy scores (Z = −4.01, p < 0.001), with a large effect size (r = 0.76). While not powered for hypothesis testing, these findings suggest the program may have a meaningful effect. Qualitative analysis of participants who reported higher baseline apathy scores identified three key mechanisms of change: positivity effect, selective pruning of social networks, and adaptive coping, consistent with socioemotional selectivity theory. Conclusions: These preliminary results support the feasibility and potential value of theory-informed, low-cost group reading programs for addressing apathy in older adults and can inform the design of a larger, controlled study. Immersive methods and biometric tools provide a rigorous, context-rich way to study how people perceive and choose food. Immersive methods use extended reality, including virtual, augmented, mixed, and augmented virtual environments, to recreate settings such as homes, shops, and restaurants. They increase participants’ sense of presence and the ecological validity (realism of conditions) of experiments, while still tightly controlling sensory and social cues like lighting, sound, and surroundings. Biometric tools record objective signals linked to attention, emotion, and cognitive load via sensors such as eye-tracking, galvanic skin response (GSR), heart rate (and variability), facial electromyography, electroencephalography, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Researchers align stimuli presentation, gaze, and physiology on a common temporal reference and link these data to outcomes like liking, choice, or willingness-to-buy. This approach reveals implicit responses that self-reports may miss, clarifies how changes in context shift perception, and improves predictive power. It enables faster, lower-risk product and packaging development, better-informed labeling and retail design, and more targeted nutrition and health communication. Good practices emphasize careful system calibration, adequate statistical power, participant comfort and safety, robust data protection, and transparent analysis. In food science and consumer behavior, combining immersive environments with biometrics yields valid, reproducible evidence about what captures attention, creates value, and drives food choice. This paper presents Greenopoli, an innovative framework for sustainability and waste management education that has engaged over 600 schools and 90,000 students since 2014. Greenopoli is founded on the idea that children and youth can grasp environmental issues as well as adults and act as agents of change within their families and communities. The Greenopoli approach combines scientific accuracy with playful, creative pedagogy to simplify complex topics and stimulate peer-to-peer learning. It includes storytelling, games, field visits, and “green raps” (original environmental songs co-created with students). The framework is adaptive, with content and activities tailored to education stages from kindergarten through university. Educators adopt the role of moderators or facilitators, encouraging students to discuss and discover concepts collaboratively. Greenopoli’s participatory method has been implemented across all age groups, yielding enthusiastic engagement and tangible outcomes in waste sorting and recycling behaviors. The program’s reach has extended beyond schools through collaborations with national recycling consortia, NGOs, municipalities, and media (TV programs, social media, TEDx talks). Numerous awards and recognitions (2017–2025) have highlighted its impact. A comparative analysis shows that Greenopoli’s use of peer-led learning, gamification, and creative communication aligns with global best practices while offering a unique blend of tools. Greenopoli is a novel best-practice model in environmental education, bridging theory and practice and contributing to the goals of Education for Sustainable Development and a circular economy. It demonstrates the effectiveness of engaging youth as change-makers through interactive and creative learning, and it can inspire similar initiatives globally. Full article

Coastal ecosystems are among the most biodiverse and economically valuable environments on Earth, yet they face escalating threats from climate change, development, and resource exploitation. Traditional conservation approaches have proven insufficient to address the systemic drivers of biodiversity loss, calling for transformative change that fundamentally reconfigures social–ecological systems. This semi-structured systematic literature review synthesizes current knowledge on transformative change in coastal biodiversity conservation, guided by the Social–Ecological Systems Framework (SESF) and expanded to include behavioral transformation as a central dimension. Behavioral transformation is defined as the sustained embedding of new attitudes, norms, and practices within governance, institutional, and community settings. Through a comprehensive review of academic databases (SCOPUS, Web of Science, CAB Abstracts) and gray literature, 134 studies published between 2010 and 2024 were analyzed. The synthesis identifies four interdependent pathways of transformation: (1) governance innovation and power redistribution, (2) behavioral change and stakeholder engagement, (3) socio-ecological restructuring, and (4) normative and cultural shifts in human–nature relations. Successful initiatives integrate trust-building, social justice, and participatory decision-making, linking behavioral change with institutional redesign and adaptive management. However, critical gaps remain in understanding long-term durability, equity outcomes, and scalability across governance levels. The review proposes three research priorities: (1) embedding behavioral science in conservation design, (2) employing longitudinal and cross-scale analyses, and (3) advancing adaptive, learning-based governance to enhance socio-ecological resilience. Global fishery resources are under increasing pressure from environmental change and institutional constraints. China’s seasonal fishing moratorium has contributed to resource recovery but has also created income and employment challenges for small-scale fishers. This study examines how livelihood capital structures shape annual livelihood portfolios under predictable closure constraints, using three representative fishing communities in Guangdong Province as case studies. A combination of data augmentation, regression analysis, and agent-based simulation was applied to analyze the relationships between capital endowments and behavioral responses. Results show that environmental and financial capital significantly increase the likelihood of maintaining capture as the primary livelihood, while psychological capital stabilizes decisions under uncertainty. Physical capital and social networks exhibit more variable effects, reflecting differentiated adaptive capacities. Simulations further reveal threshold effects and diminishing marginal returns in capital accumulation, with heterogeneous temporal impacts across capital types. Theoretically, the study extends the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach by incorporating environmental and psychological capital, thereby enriching the understanding of capital mechanisms in fisheries. Overall, the findings advance knowledge of how small-scale fishers adapt under institutional constraints and provide practical insights for policies aimed at aligning livelihood security with the sustainable use of marine resources. This study systematically reviewed 38 peer-reviewed articles (2020–2024) on social media and environmental communication in China following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. It identified dominant research patterns across themes, theories, methods, and platforms. The field is heavily shaped by behavioral models (e.g., TPB, NAT) and survey-based designs, while institutional dynamics, platform governance, and cross-platform processes remain underexamined. Weibo and WeChat dominate as research sites, whereas short-video platforms like TikTok and Bilibili are emerging but undertheorized. Cross-level frameworks are frequently reduced to individual-level predictors, and social media are often treated as neutral delivery tools. The review highlights the need for multi-level approaches linking individual cognition, media architectures, and governance contexts to better capture how environmental publics form and operate in China’s platformed ecology. This study contributes to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals by revealing how social media infrastructures mediate environmental awareness, engagement, and systemic change.
