Ecosystem services—the benefits humans derive from nature—are foundational to environmental sustainability and economic well-being, with carbon sequestration and storage standing out as critical regulating services in the fight against climate change. This study presents a comprehensive financial valuation of the carbon sequestration, storage and product substitution ecosystem services provided by the Hungarian forest-based sector. Using a multi-scenario framework, four complementary valuation concepts are assessed: total carbon storage (biomass, soil, and harvested wood products), annual net sequestration, emissions avoided through material and energy substitution, and marketable carbon value under voluntary carbon market (VCM) and EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) mechanisms. Data sources include the National Forestry Database, the Hungarian Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and national estimates on substitution effects and soil carbon stocks. The total carbon stock of Hungarian forests is estimated at 1289 million tons of CO2 eq, corresponding to a theoretical climate liability value of over EUR 64 billion. Annual sequestration is valued at approximately 380 million EUR/year, while avoided emissions contribute an additional 453 million EUR/year in mitigation benefits. A comparative analysis of two mutually exclusive crediting strategies—improved forest management projects (IFMs) avoiding final harvesting versus long-term carbon storage through the use of harvested wood products—reveals that intensified harvesting for durable wood use offers higher revenue potential (up to 90 million EUR/year) than non-harvesting IFM scenarios. These findings highlight the dual role of forests as both carbon sinks and sources of climate-smart materials and call for policy frameworks that integrate substitution benefits and long-term storage opportunities in support of effective climate and bioeconomy strategies. Urban transport is a key driver of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe, making its decarbonization essential to achieving EU climate neutrality targets. This study examines how European strategies, such as the Green Deal, the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, and the Fit for 55 package, are reflected in Romania’s transport policies, with a focus on implementation challenges and urban outcomes in Bucharest. By combining policy analysis, stakeholder mapping, and comparative mobility indicators, the paper critically assesses Bucharest’s current reliance on private vehicles, underperforming public transport satisfaction, and limited progress on active mobility. The study develops a context-sensitive reform framework for the Romanian capital, grounded in transferable lessons from Western and Central European cities. It emphasizes coordinated metropolitan governance, public trust-building, phased car-restraint measures, and investment alignment as key levers. Rather than merely cataloguing policy intentions, the paper offers practical recommendations informed by systemic governance barriers and public attitudes. The findings will contribute to academic debates on urban mobility transitions in post-socialist cities and provide actionable insights for policymakers seeking to operationalize EU decarbonization goals at the metropolitan scale. The rising demand for sustainable protein is driving interest in insects as a raw material for advanced food ingredients. This review collates and critically analyses over 300 studies on the conversion of crickets, mealworms, black soldier flies, and other farmed species into powders, protein isolates, oils, and chitosan-rich fibers with targeted techno-functional roles. This survey maps how thermal pre-treatments, blanch–dry–mill routes, enzymatic hydrolysis, and isoelectric solubilization–precipitation preserve or enhance the water- and oil-holding capacity, emulsification, foaming, and gelation, while also mitigating off-flavors, allergenicity, and microbial risks. A meta-analysis shows insect flours can absorb up to 3.2 g of water g−1, stabilize oil-in-water emulsions for 14 days at 4 °C, and form gels with 180 kPa strength, outperforming or matching eggs, soy, or whey in specific applications. Case studies demonstrate a successful incorporation at 5–15% into bakery, meat analogs and dairy alternatives without sensory penalties, and chitin-derived chitosan films extend the bread shelf life by three days. Comparative life-cycle data indicate 45–80% lower greenhouse gas emissions and land use than equivalent animal-derived ingredients. Collectively, the evidence positions insect-based ingredients as versatile, safe, and climate-smart tools to enhance food quality and sustainability, while outlining research gaps in allergen mitigation, consumer acceptance, and regulatory harmonization. Climate change presents urgent and complex challenges to agricultural sustainability and food security, particularly in regions reliant on resource-intensive staple crops. Smart agriculture—through the integration of crop modeling, satellite remote sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI)—offers data-driven strategies to enhance productivity, optimize input use, and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study introduces Farmdee-Mesook, a mobile-first smart agriculture platform designed specifically for Thai rice farmers. The platform leverages AquaCrop simulation, open-access satellite data, and localized agronomic models to deliver real-time, field-specific recommendations. Usability-focused design and no-cost access facilitate its widespread adoption, particularly among smallholders. Empirical results show that platform users achieved yield increases of up to 37%, reduced agrochemical costs by 59%, and improved water productivity by 44% under alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation schemes. These outcomes underscore the platform’s role as a scalable, cost-effective solution for operationalizing climate-smart agriculture. Farmdee-Mesook demonstrates that digital technologies, when contextually tailored and institutionally supported, can serve as critical enablers of climate adaptation and sustainable agricultural transformation. Consumables Usage and Carbon Dioxide Emissions in Logging Operations

In this study, we comprehensively analyzed material consumption (fuel, hydraulic oil, lubricants, and AdBlue fluid) and estimated carbon dioxide emissions during logging operations. This study was carried out in the northeastern part of Poland. Four harvesters and four forwarders representing two manufacturers (John Deere-Deere & Co., Moline, USA, and Komatsu Forest AB, Umeå, Sweden) were analyzed to compare their operational efficiency and constructional influences on overall operating costs. Due to differences in engine emission standards, approximate greenhouse gas emissions were estimated. The results indicate that harvesters equipped with Stage V engines have lower fuel consumption, while large forwarders use more consumables than small ones per hour and cubic meter of harvested and extracted timber. A strong positive correlation was observed between total machine time and fuel consumption (r = 0.81), as well as between machine time and total volume of timber harvested (r = 0.72). Older and larger machines showed about 40% higher combustion per unit of wood processed. Newer machines meeting higher emission standards (Stage V) generally achieved lower CO2 and other GHG emissions compared to older models. Machines with Stage V engines emitted about 2.07 kg CO2 per processing of 1 m3 of wood, while machines with older engine types emitted as much as 4.35 kg CO2 per 1 m3—roughly half as much. These differences are even more pronounced in the context of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions: the estimated NOx emissions for the older engine types were as high as ~85 g per m3, while those for Stage V engines were only about 5 g per m3 of harvested wood. Continuing the study would need to expand the number of machines analyzed, as well as acquire more detailed performance data on individual operators. A tool that could make this possible would be fleet monitoring services offered by the manufacturers of the surveyed harvesters and forwards, such as Smart Forestry or Timber Manager. Full article

Accurate, energy-efficient climate regulation is crucial for scaling smart greenhouse production. While nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) can co-optimize yield and resource use, its efficacy hinges on short-range weather information and real-time solver feasibility. This paper investigates the performance of advanced NMPC strategies for smart greenhouse climate control, with particular emphasis on the roles of AI-driven disturbance prediction and warm-start initialization for real-time optimization. Six controller configurations, including feedback-only, LSTM-based forecast, and ideal disturbance models, each with and without warm-start, were tested in a 40-day simulation of a lettuce smart greenhouse. Performance metrics included final biomass, constraint violations, resource costs, profit, and solver time. Results show that feedback-only controllers maximize yield and profit, incurring higher CO2 costs but lower heating costs, alongside greater constraint violations compared to the predictive strategies. Predictive and ideal disturbance-aware controllers effectively reduce resource consumption and improve constraint compliance at the expense of lower yields. Importantly, warm-start initialization significantly accelerates computation without affecting control quality. The study also demonstrates that penalty parameters, rather than economic weight settings, predominantly determine aggregate constraint violation. The findings provide actionable insights for designing and deploying NMPC-based greenhouse controllers, highlighting the importance of warm-start techniques and the trade-offs between productivity, resource efficiency, and environmental compliance. With water scarcity becoming worse, and demand increasing, the urgency for the water industry to hit net-zero carbon is accelerating. Even as a multitude of utilities have pledged to reach net-zero by 2050, advancing beyond the energy–water nexus remains a heavy lift. This paper, using a systematic literature review that complies with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), aims to propose sustainable water resource management (SWRM) strategies that may assist water utilities in decarbonizing their value chains and achieving net-zero carbon. In total, 31 articles were included from SCOPUS, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, and Springer. The findings show that water utilities are responsible for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions and could reduce these emissions by more than 45% by employing a few strategies, including the electrification of transport fleets, the use of renewables, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and energy-efficient technologies. A broad-based case study from Scottish Water shows a 254,000-ton CO2 reduction in the period since 2007, indicative of the potential of these measures. The review concludes that net-zero carbon is feasible through a mix of decarbonization, wastewater reuse, smart systems and policy-led innovation, especially if customized to both large and small utilities. To facilitate a wider and a more scalable transition, research needs to focus on development of low-cost and flexible strategies for underserved utilities. Full article

As an emerging energy-saving approach, bio-inspired drag reduction technology has become a key research direction for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This study introduces the latest research progress on bio-inspired microstructured surfaces in the field of underwater drag reduction, focusing on analyzing the drag reduction mechanism, preparation process, and application effect of the three major technological paths; namely, bio-inspired non-smooth surfaces, bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces, and bio-inspired modified coatings. Bio-inspired non-smooth surfaces can significantly reduce the wall shear stress by regulating the flow characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer through microstructure design. Bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces form stable gas–liquid interfaces through the construction of micro-nanostructures and reduce frictional resistance by utilizing the slip boundary effect. Bio-inspired modified coatings, on the other hand, realize the synergistic function of drag reduction and antifouling through targeted chemical modification of materials and design of micro-nanostructures. Although these technologies have made significant progress in drag reduction performance, their engineering applications still face bottlenecks such as manufacturing process complexity, gas layer stability, and durability. Future research should focus on the analysis of drag reduction mechanisms and optimization of material properties under multi-physical field coupling conditions, the development of efficient and low-cost manufacturing processes, and the enhancement of surface stability and adaptability through dynamic self-healing coatings and smart response materials. It is hoped that the latest research status of bio-inspired drag reduction technology reviewed in this study provides a theoretical basis and technical reference for the sustainable development and energy-saving design of ships and underwater vehicles. This study explores modernization strategies for existing district heating (DH) networks to enhance their efficiency and sustainability, focusing on achieving net-zero emissions in urban heating systems. Building upon a literature review and expert interviews, we developed a strategic decision-support framework that outlines distinct strategies for retrofitting district heating grids and includes a portfolio analysis. This framework serves as a tool to guide DH operators and stakeholders in selecting well-founded modernization pathways by considering technical, economic, and social dimensions. The review identifies several promising measures, such as reducing operational temperatures at substations, implementing optimized substations, integrating renewable and waste heat sources, implementing thermal energy storage (TES), deploying smart metering and monitoring infrastructure, and expanding networks while addressing public concerns. Additionally, the review highlights the importance of stakeholder engagement and policy support in successfully implementing these strategies. The developed strategic decision-support framework helps practitioners select a tailored modernization strategy aligned with the local context. Furthermore, the findings show the necessity of adopting a comprehensive approach that combines technical upgrades with robust stakeholder involvement and supportive policy measures to facilitate the transition to sustainable urban heating solutions. For example, the development of decision-support tools enables stakeholders to systematically evaluate and select grid modernization strategies, directly helping to reduce transmission losses and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contributing to climate goals and enhancing energy security. Indeed, as shown in the reviewed literature, retrofitting high-temperature district heating networks with low-temperature distribution and integrating renewables can lead to near-complete decarbonization of the supplied heat. Additionally, integrating advanced digital technologies, such as smart grid systems, can enhance grid efficiency and enable a greater share of variable renewable energy thus supporting national decarbonization targets. Further investigation could point to the most determining context factors for best choices to improve the sustainability and efficiency of existing DH systems. Full article

Livestock farming is a vital component of global food security, yet it remains a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane (CH4), which has a global warming potential 28 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2). This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge surrounding the sources, biological mechanisms, and mitigation strategies related to CH4 emissions from ruminant livestock. We first explore the process of methanogenesis within the rumen, detailing the role of methanogenic archaea and the environmental factors influencing CH4 production. A thorough assessment of both direct and indirect methods used to quantify CH4 emissions is presented, including in vitro techniques (e.g., syringe method, batch culture, RUSITEC), in vivo techniques (e.g., respiration chambers, Greenfeed, laser CH4 detectors), and statistical modeling approaches. The advantages and limitations of each method are critically analyzed in terms of accuracy, cost, feasibility, and applicability to different farming systems. We then examine a wide range of mitigation strategies, organized into four core pillars: (1) animal and feed management (e.g., genetic selection, pasture quality improvement), (2) diet formulation (e.g., feed additives such as oils, tannins, saponins, and seaweed), (3) rumen manipulation (e.g., probiotics, ionophores, defaunation, vaccination), and (4) manure management practices and policy-level interventions. These strategies are evaluated not only for their environmental impact but also for their economic and practical viability in diverse livestock systems. By integrating technological innovations with sustainable agricultural practices, this review highlights pathways to reduce CH4 emissions while maintaining animal productivity. It aims to support decision-makers, researchers, and livestock producers in the global effort to transition toward climate-smart, low-emission livestock farming. Full article

In recent decades, climate change, increasing demand, and resource scarcity have transformed the agricultural sector into a critical field of research. Farmers have been compelled to adopt innovations and new technologies to enhance production efficiency and crop resilience. This study presents a systematic literature review, supplemented by a bibliometric analysis of relevant documents, focusing on the key applications and combined techniques of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and digital twins (DT) in the development and implementation of cyber-physical systems (CPS) in smart agriculture and establishes whether CPS in agriculture is an attractive research topic. A total of 108 bibliographic records from the Scopus and Google Scholar databases were analyzed to construct the bibliometric study database. The findings reveal that CPS has evolved and emerged as a promising research area, largely due to its versatility and integration potential. The analysis offers researchers and practitioners a comprehensive overview of the existing literature and research trends on the dynamic relationship between CPS and its primary applications in the agricultural industry while encouraging further exploration in this field. Additionally, the main challenges associated with implementing CPS in the context of smart agriculture are discussed, contributing to a deeper understanding of this topic. Full article

In this study, we examined the impact of an intelligent system and air conditioning control on power consumption. The experiment was carried out during five distinct time periods: (1) background room usage, (2) smart system setup, (3) air conditioning control to maintain room temperature at no more than 27 °C, (4) air conditioning temperature control during working hours, and (5) air conditioning operated continuously to maintain the room temperature at 27 °C. For each time period, the daily power consumption was evaluated, and outliers were identified and eliminated using a threshold derived from the hourly average. The findings demonstrated that the smart system setup period and air conditioning control resulted in lower usage compared to continuously operated air conditioning with substantial spikes in demand. The impacts of the novel system and air conditioning control on energy consumption were revealed through statistical analysis, which included regression models and hypothesis tests. According to this study’s findings, it is essential to regulate spikes and guarantee proper operation to reduce the carbon footprint while maintaining a comfortable atmosphere. Notably, the integration of the smart system and optimized scheduling resulted in a substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, with annual carbon emissions reduced by up to 65% compared to continuously operated air conditioning without smart control. From Conventional to Electrified Pavements: A Structural Modeling Approach for Spanish Roads

The accelerated growth of the transport sector has increased oil consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, intensifying global environmental challenges. The electrification of transportation has emerged as a key strategy to achieve sustainability targets, with electric vehicles (EVs) expected to account for 50% of global car sales by 2035. However, widespread adoption requires smart infrastructure capable of enabling dynamic in-motion charging. In this context, Electric Road Systems (ERSs), particularly those based on Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technologies, offer a promising solution by transferring energy between road-embedded transmitters and vehicle-mounted receivers. This study assesses the structural response and service life of conventional and electrified asphalt pavement sections representative of the Spanish road network. Several standard pavement configurations were analyzed under heavy traffic (dual axles, 13 tons) using a hybrid approach combining mechanistic–empirical multilayer modeling and three-dimensional Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. The electrified designs integrate prefabricated charging units (CUs) placed at a 9 cm depth, disrupting the structural continuity of the pavement. The results reveal stress concentrations at the CU–asphalt interface and service life reductions of up to 50% in semiflexible pavements. Semirigid sections performed better, with average reductions close to 40%. These findings are based on numerical simulations of standard Spanish sections and do not include experimental validation. This study introduces a deep learning (DL)-based optimal condition monitoring and control system tailored to indoor smart greenhouses, with a novel focus on maintaining symmetry—defined as a dynamic equilibrium among temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels—critical in plant growth. A hydroponic greenhouse prototype was developed to capture real-time climate data at high temporal resolution. A custom 1D convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) optimized via a genetic algorithm (GA) was employed to predict environmental fluctuations, achieving R2 scores up to 0.99 and a standard error of prediction (SEP) as low as 0.35%. The system then actuated climate control mechanisms to restore and maintain symmetry. Experimental validation revealed that plants grown under the symmetry-aware control system exhibited significantly improved growth metrics. The results underscore the potential of integrating symmetry-aware DL strategies into precision agriculture in achieving sustainable and resilient plant production systems. Full article

In the current context, where environmental concerns are gaining increased attention, the transition toward sustainable urban mobility stands out as a necessary and responsible step. Technological advancements over the past decade have brought private autonomous vehicles, particularly those defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers Levels 4 and 5, into focus as promising solutions for mitigating road congestion and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the extent to which Autonomous Vehicles can fulfill this potential depends largely on user acceptance, patterns of use, and their integration within broader green energy and sustainability policies. The present paper aims to develop an integrated conceptual model that links behavioral determinants to environmental outcomes, assessing how individuals’ intention to adopt private autonomous vehicles can contribute to sustainable urban mobility. The model integrates five psychosocial determinants—perceived usefulness, trust in technology, social influence, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control—with contextual variables such as energy source, infrastructure availability, and public policy. These components interact to predict users’ intention to adopt AVs and their perceived contribution to urban sustainability. Methodologically, the study builds on a narrative synthesis of the literature and proposes a framework applicable to empirical validation through structural equation modeling (SEM). The model draws on established frameworks such as Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Theory of Planned Behavior, and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, incorporating constructs including perceived usefulness, trust in technology, social influence, environmental concern, and perceived behavioral control, constructs later to be examined in relation to key contextual variables, including the energy source powering Autonomous Vehicles—such as electricity from mixed or renewable grids, hydrogen, or hybrid systems—and the broader policy environment (regulatory frameworks, infrastructure investment, fiscal incentives, and alignment with climate and mobility strategies and others). The research provides relevant directions for public policy and behavioral interventions in support of the development of clean and smart urban transport in the age of automation. Full article
