The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) systems with social networking concepts has opened new business and social opportunities, particularly by allowing smart objects to autonomously establish social relationships with each other and exchange information. However, these relations must be properly quantified and integrated with trust in order to proliferate the provisioning of IoT composite services. Therefore, this proposed work focuses on quantitatively computing social strength and trust among smart objects in IoT for the purpose of aiding efficient service composition with reasonable accuracy. In particular, we propose a trust-augmented social strength (TASS) management protocol that can cope with the heterogeneity of IoT and demonstrate high scalability and resiliency against various malicious attacks. Afterward, we show how the TASS measurements can be applied to service planning in IoT service composition. Based on the experimental results, we conclude that the proposed protocol is, in fact, capable of exhibiting the above-mentioned characteristics in real-world settings. Full article

Strategic logistics planning is used by management to define action plans that will enable organizations to always make decisions that are in the organization’s best interests. They are based on a knowledge repository of business experiences, which is usually represented by a centralized, organized, and searchable digital system where organizations store and manage critical institutional knowledge. Thus, an institutional knowledge base provides sustainability, making the experiences readily available while keeping them well organized. In this research, the experiences of logistics experts from selected scholarly designs for six-sigma business improvement projects have been collected, classified, and organized to form a logistics knowledge management system. Although originally meant to facilitate current and future decisions in strategic logistics planning of the cooperating companies, it is also used in logistics education to introduce knowledge-based engineering principles to enterprise strategic planning, based on continuous improvement of quality-related product or process performance indicators. The main goal of this article is to highlight the benefits of knowledge-based engineering over the established ontological logistics knowledge base in smart production, based on the predisposition that ontological institutional knowledge base management is more efficient, adaptable, and sustainable. This study presents the design and validation of an integrated fire safety system that leverages edge AI, hybrid sensing, and precision suppression to overcome the latency and collateral limitations of conventional smoke detection and sprinkler systems. The proposed platform features a dual-mode sensor array for early fire recognition, motorized ventilation units for rapid smoke extraction, and a 360° directional nozzle for targeted agent discharge using a residue-free clean extinguishing agent. Experimental trials demonstrated an average fire detection time of 5.8 s and complete flame suppression within 13.2 s, with 90% smoke clearance achieved in under 95 s. No false positives were recorded during non-fire simulations, and the system remained fully functional under simulated cloud communication failure, confirming its edge-resilient architecture. A probabilistic risk analysis based on ISO 31000 and NFPA 551 frameworks showed risk reductions of 75.6% in life safety, 58.0% in property damage, and 67.1% in business disruption. The system achieved a composite risk reduction of approximately 73%, shifting the operational risk level into the ALARP region. These findings demonstrate the system’s capacity to provide proactive, energy-efficient, and spatially targeted fire response suitable for high-value infrastructure. The modular design and SmartThings Edge integration further support scalable deployment and real-time system intelligence, establishing a strong foundation for future adaptive fire protection frameworks. The EU power market system has successfully maintained a centralized governance structure ensuring stable electricity supply and affordable prices for over two decades. However, the ongoing energy transition towards carbon neutrality has exposed critical governance limitations, leading to challenges in community projects implementation. Given that Heating and Cooling (H&C) accounts for more than 50% of the EU’s energy consumption, community H&C initiatives can drive local energy transitions and support renewable integration. This study analyzes the best practices from European community energy initiatives, supplemented by insights from the Energy Leap project. By employing a comparative analysis approach, the study proposes a technically sound and regulatory feasible governance model, alongside a robust ecosystem support framework. The proposed framework introduces new roles and new forms of partnerships between communities—private entities and consumers—taking advantage of the benefits offered by the operation of Energy Communities (ECs), enhancing community engagement and regulatory adaptability. These insights offer practical guidance and contribute to effective policymaking in support of the EU’s energy transition objectives. Full article

The digital economy has amplified the role of technological innovation in transforming financial services and business models. Patent data offer valuable insights into these dynamics, especially within the growing FinTech ecosystem. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of academic research that utilizes PATSTAT, a global database managed by the European Patent Office, focusing on its application in studies related to digital innovation, finance, and economic transformation. A systematic mapping of publications indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, Wiley, Emerald, and Springer Nature is carried out using Biblioshiny and Bibliometrix in RStudio 2025.05.0, complemented by graph-based visualizations via VOSviewer 1.6.20. The findings reveal a growing body of research that leverages PATSTAT to explore technological trajectories, intellectual property strategies, and innovation systems, particularly in areas such as blockchain technologies, AI-driven finance, digital payments, and smart contracts. This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the strategic value of patent analytics in the FinTech landscape and offers a reference point for researchers and decision-makers aiming to understand emerging trends in financial technologies and the digital economy. This paper presents an integrated Smart City platform that combines digital twin technology, advanced machine learning, and a private blockchain network to enhance data-driven decision making and operational efficiency in both public enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The proposed cloud-based business intelligence model automates Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes, enables real-time analytics, and secures data integrity and transparency through blockchain-enabled audit trails. By implementing the proposed solution, Smart City and public service providers can significantly improve operational efficiency, including a 15% reduction in costs and a 12% decrease in fuel consumption for waste management, as well as increased citizen engagement and transparency in Smart City governance. The digital twin component facilitated scenario simulations and proactive resource management, while the participatory governance module empowered citizens through transparent, immutable records of proposals and voting. This study also discusses technical, organizational, and regulatory challenges, such as data integration, scalability, and privacy compliance. The results indicate that the proposed approach offers a scalable and sustainable model for Smart City transformation, fostering citizen trust, regulatory compliance, and measurable environmental and social benefits. The increasing integration of renewable energy sources (RES) in power systems presents challenges related to variability, stability, and efficiency, particularly in smart microgrids. This systematic review, following the PRISMA 2020 methodology, analyzed 66 studies focused on advanced energy storage systems, intelligent control strategies, and optimization techniques. Hybrid storage solutions combining battery systems, hydrogen technologies, and pumped hydro storage were identified as effective approaches to mitigate RES intermittency and balance short- and long-term energy demands. The transition from centralized to distributed control architectures, supported by predictive analytics, digital twins, and AI-based forecasting, has improved operational planning and system monitoring. However, challenges remain regarding interoperability, data privacy, cybersecurity, and the limited availability of high-quality data for AI model training. Economic analyses show that while initial investments are high, long-term operational savings and improved resilience justify the adoption of advanced microgrid solutions when supported by appropriate policies and financial mechanisms. Future research should address the standardization of communication protocols, development of explainable AI models, and creation of sustainable business models to enhance resilience, efficiency, and scalability. These efforts are necessary to accelerate the deployment of decentralized, low-carbon energy systems capable of meeting future energy demands under increasingly complex operational conditions. This study addresses the multifaceted challenges inherent in implementing effective smart-city waste-management systems. Recent global trends indicate increased adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies—such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics—to optimize waste collection and processing. The central research question investigates the role of innovative business models and sustainable decision-making frameworks in advancing smart waste management within urban environments. This research integrates three interrelated domains: business-model innovation, smart-city paradigms, and sustainability in waste management. Its novelty lies in synthesizing these domains, conducting a comparative analysis of best practices from leading European smart cities, and proposing a conceptual framework to guide sustainable decision-making. Methodologically, the study employs a systematic literature review, case-study analyses, and the synthesis of theoretical and empirical data. Key findings demonstrate that innovative business models—such as product-as-a-service, circular-economy approaches, and waste-as-a-service—substantially enhance the sustainability and operational efficiency of urban waste systems. However, many cities lack comprehensive strategies for integrating these models, highlighting the necessity for deliberate planning and active stakeholder engagement. Based on these insights, the study offers actionable recommendations for policymakers and urban managers to embed sustainable business models into smart-city waste infrastructures. These contributions aim to promote the development of resilient, efficient, and environmentally responsible waste-management systems in smart cities. Full article

This study aims to examine the influence of sustainable leadership, organizational culture, and digital marketing on sustainable performance in tourism sector companies in Indonesia. In addition, the research investigates the indirect effects through knowledge sharing. Specifically, the study explores the moderating role of knowledge sharing in the relationship between sustainable leadership and organizational culture with sustainable performance. The research gap in this study lies in its approach, which combines several variables that have not been widely explored in the context of sustainability in the tourism facilities sector. The population of this research comprises all tourism facility companies operating in natural tourism areas in Indonesia that have been officially licensed by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. The sample consists of 103 tourism facility companies. Respondents selected were company leaders or managers deemed to possess in-depth knowledge of the company’s operations and business strategies. The analysis method employed was Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS), utilizing SmartPLS 4.1.1.2 software to test the hypotheses. The findings indicate that sustainable leadership, organizational culture, and digital marketing significantly influence sustainable performance. However, sustainable leadership and organizational culture do not significantly influence digital marketing. Furthermore, the study confirms that knowledge sharing serves as a moderating variable that strengthens the relationship between sustainable leadership and organizational culture with sustainable performance. The results of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for tourism sector companies to enhance sustainable performance through the implementation of sustainable leadership, a supportive organizational culture, and effective utilization of digital marketing. This academic article seeks to clarify the state of the literature on a very pertinent topic that is based on how digital innovation, considering emerging technologies and how they could be used in business management and marketing, could increase sustainable development. The sustainable economy, which should maintain long-term development through efficient resource management, has as allies emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things that can help reduce waste, reduce the carbon footprint, and automate tasks. Additionally, they could present themselves as a solution to improve aspects of digital communication between companies and their consumers in remote training, distribution chain, e-commerce, and process optimization in different sectors of activity. These advances will, on the one hand, allow the possibility of conducting a greater amount of professional training, increasing the number of qualified professionals and, on the other hand, facilitate trade exchanges, promoting the economy. Based on a systematic bibliometric review of the literature using the PRISMA framework, this study investigates how digital tools catalyze transformative changes in different sectors of activity. The results indicate that, overall, the academic articles analyzed in this literature review present studies focused on digitalization and sustainability (approximately 50%). In second place are topics related to digitalization and other topics such as: smart cities; Sustainable Development Goals; academia; the digital economy; government policies; academic education; and sustainable communication (29%). Finally, in third place, there are academic articles closely linked to digitalization and the environment, more specifically to sustainable practices and the management of natural resources (21%). The article concludes that digital development, when used wisely, serves as a crucial lever to address the world’s most pressing sustainability imperatives. Future research should emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration and adaptive governance to ensure that these digital changes produce lasting impacts for people and the planet. Full article

With the rapid development of the Financial Internet of Things (FIoT), many intelligent devices have been deployed in various business scenarios. Due to the unique characteristics of these devices, they are highly vulnerable to malicious attacks, posing significant threats to the system’s stability and security. Moreover, the limited resources available in the FIoT, combined with the extensive deployment of AI algorithms, can significantly reduce overall system availability. To address the challenge of resisting malicious behaviors and attacks in the FIoT, this paper proposes a trust-based collaborative smart device selection algorithm that integrates both subjective and objective trust mechanisms with dynamic blacklists and whitelists, leveraging domain knowledge and game theory. It is essential to evaluate real-time dynamic trust levels during system execution to accurately assess device trustworthiness. A dynamic blacklist and whitelist transformation mechanism is also proposed to capture the evolving behavior of collaborative service devices and update the lists accordingly. The proposed algorithm enhances the anti-attack capabilities of smart devices in the FIoT by combining adaptive trust evaluation with blacklist and whitelist strategies. It maintains a high task success rate in both single and complex attack scenarios. Furthermore, to address the challenge of resource allocation for trusted smart devices under constrained edge resources, a coalition game-based algorithm is proposed that considers both device activity and trust levels. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves task success rates and resource allocation performance compared to existing approaches. Full article

The increasing integration of sensing devices with smart technologies, deep learning algorithms, and robotics is profoundly transforming the agricultural sector in the context of Farming 4.0. These technological advancements constitute critical enablers for the development of customized, data-driven farming systems, offering potential solutions to the challenges of agricultural intensification while addressing societal concerns associated with the emerging paradigm of “farming by numbers”. The Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) systems enable the continuous, real-time, and individual sensing of livestock in order to detect subtle change in animals’ status and permit timely corrective actions. In addition, smart technology implementation within the housing environment leads the whole farming sector towards enhanced business rentability and food security as well as increased animal health and welfare conditions. Looking to the future, the collection, processing, and analysis of data with advanced statistic methods provide valuable information useful to design predictive models and foster the insight on animal welfare, environmental sustainability, farming productivity, and profitability. This review highlights the significant potential of implementing advanced sensing systems in livestock farming, examining the scientific foundations of PLF and analyzing the main technological applications driving the transition from traditional practices to more modern and efficient farming models. As remote and hybrid work models continue to grow, the design of workspaces and their surrounding environments has gained even more importance. This study explores the impact of window design on the restorative potential of Prefabricated Movable Buildings (PMBs) of smart/co-working located in small villages. Using Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR), seven window configurations, varying in size, frame ratio, and number of glass panes, were evaluated. Participants’ sense of presence, defined as the subjective feeling of ‘being there’ in the virtual environment, and perceived restoration, referring mainly to the psychological (attention and emotions) and physiological (stress) resources recovery, were assessed using, respectively, Igroup Presence Questionnaire (IPQ) and the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS). The overall IPQ results suggest that the virtual environment in this study provides a “High” sense of presence, highlighting the validity of IVR to evaluate architectural designs. The PRS results found that larger, uninterrupted windows with a higher Window-to-Wall Ratio and lower Frame Ratio significantly enhance participants’ perceived restoration. Restoration effects were also higher when offices were located in small villages rather than in business districts. These results highlight the importance of incorporating large windows in smart/co-working spaces within culturally rich small villages to promote worker well-being and office sustainability. While the majority of previous studies approached open innovation through inbound and outbound innovation positioned as a mediator or by investigating its direct impact either on OR or overall performance, few have concurrently approached it from the breadth and depth dimensions with respect to either performance or resilience. This study offers a comprehensive approach through its unique elements in which all underexplored factors are combined in one theoretical framework. To the best of our knowledge, this study is a pioneer in the UAE business market, providing insights from multisector employee-level data that differs from previous management-focused research. The data was analyzed using the SmartPLS 4 SEM approach. The findings indicate that OID directly influences OR, underscoring the significance of deep and sustained external collaboration. Meanwhile, OIB indirectly contributes to OR through OA, highlighting the significance of the mediating impact of OA. Moreover, both OIB and OID influence SP, positioning OI as a strategic lever for long-term, sustainable performance. This study contributes to the existing body of research by offering nuanced insights into and details on how organizations can benefit from various OI strategies that enhance resilience and sustainability in today’s dynamic business environments. As part of the global endeavor to encourage sustainable urban growth and lower carbon emissions, Hail City is leading the way in implementing cutting-edge technologies with which to improve its urban infrastructure. Initiatives for energy resilience and the environment heavily rely on shifting to electric vehicles (EVs). This work describes the strategic planning required to implement a network of solar charging stations and analyzes the parameters that affect this, supporting cleaner transport options. In addition to meeting the growing demand from an increased number of EVs, constructing a network of solar charging stations positions the city as a leader in integrating renewable energy sources into urban areas. A solar electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) will also be designed. This study highlights a competitive attitude in establishing international standards for sustainable practices and critically examines the technical factors affecting the required charging stations. Regarding the latter, the following results were obtained. The ideal number of station slots is 200. Less efficient vehicles with higher consumption rates require a more comprehensive charging infrastructure, and increasing the charging power leads to an apparent decrease in the number of stations. The influence of battery capacity on the required NSs is limited, especially at charger power values above 30 kWh. By taking proactive measures to address these factors, Hail City hopes to improve its infrastructure effectively and sustainably, keeping it competitive in a world where cities are increasingly judged on their ability to adopt new technology and green projects. A solar station was designed to supply the EVCS with a capacity of 700.56 kWp. Full article
