Noise contamination is a common challenge in the analysis of time series data, where stochastic perturbations can obscure deterministic dynamics and complicate the interpretation of signals from chaotic and physiological systems. Reliable identification of noise regimes and their intensity is therefore essential for robust analysis of dynamical and biomedical signals, where incorrect attribution of stochastic perturbations can lead to misleading interpretations of system behavior. For this reason, the present study examines the role of complexity-based descriptors for identifying stochastic perturbations in time series and analyzes how these metrics respond to different noise regimes across heterogeneous dynamical systems. A supervised learning approach based on complexity descriptors was developed to analyze controlled perturbations in multiple signal types. Gaussian, pink, and low-frequency noise disturbances were injected at predefined intensity levels into the Rössler and Lorenz chaotic systems, the Hénon map, and synthetic electrocardiogram signals, while AR(1) processes were used for validation on inherently stochastic signals. From these systems, eighteen entropy-based, fractal, statistical, and singular value decomposition-based complexity metrics were extracted from either raw signals or reconstructed phase spaces. These features were used to perform three classification tasks that capture different aspects of noise characterization, including detecting the presence of noise, identifying the perturbation type, and discriminating between different noise intensities. In addition to predictive modeling, the study evaluates the complexity profiles and feature relevance of the metrics under varying perturbation regimes. The results show that no single complexity metric consistently discriminates noise regimes across all systems. Instead, system-specific relevance patterns emerge. Under given experimental constraints (data partitioning, machine learning algorithm, etc.), Approximate Entropy provides the strongest discrimination for the Lorenz system and the Hénon map, the Coefficient of Variation, Sample and Permutation Entropy dominate classification for ECG signals, and the Condition Number and Variance of first derivative together with Fisher Information are most informative for the Rössler system. Across all datasets, the proposed framework achieves an average accuracy of 99% for noise presence detection, 98.4% for noise type classification, and 98.5% for noise intensity classification. These findings demonstrate that complexity metrics capture structural and statistical signatures of stochastic perturbations across a diverse set of dynamic systems. Full article

Early and reliable detection of P-wave arrivals is critical for seismic monitoring and earthquake early warning, particularly under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and non-stationary noise conditions. This study presents an automatic detection method based on singular value decomposition (SVD) entropy computed in sliding time windows with local signal filtering. Within this framework, the P-wave onset is interpreted as a local structural change in the signal rather than a simple energy increase. SVD entropy captures the redistribution of energy among dominant signal components, providing high sensitivity to the initial P-wave arrival even at moderate and low noise levels (SNR2). The method was validated using real seismic data from four regional stations operating under different noise conditions. Analysis of detection parameters revealed strong station dependence. For stations affected by low-frequency drift, polynomial detrending was identified as a necessary preprocessing step to ensure a stable entropy response and reliable detection. The proposed approach achieves detection accuracies of up to 93–98% at SNR2, significantly outperforming the classical STA/LTA algorithm and demonstrating performance comparable to modern deep learning methods. Since the method does not require model training or labeled datasets, it provides an interpretable and computationally efficient solution for automatic seismic monitoring. These properties make the proposed approach particularly suitable for real-time seismic monitoring systems and distributed sensor networks operating under limited computational resources. All computational stages were performed at the Farabi Supercomputer Centre of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The method requires no model training or labeled data, making it an interpretable, robust, and computationally efficient solution for automatic seismic monitoring and early warning systems. This article examines the behavior of seismic noise fields over the Japanese islands recorded by the F-net seismic network for 1997–2025. This paper uses nonlinear noise statistics: the entropy of the wavelet coefficient distribution, the Donoho–Johnston (DJ) wavelet index, and the multifractal singularity spectrum support width. These parameters were chosen because their changes reflect the complication or simplification of the noise structure. Changes in the structure of seismic noise properties are analyzed in comparison with a sequence of strong earthquakes. Using a model of the intensity of interacting point processes, the effect of the leading of local noise property extrema relative to the seismic event times is estimated. Using the Hilbert–Huang decomposition, the synchronization of the amplitudes of the envelopes of noise property time series for different IMF levels is estimated. A sequence of weighted probability density maps of extreme values of noise properties is analyzed in comparison with the mega-earthquake of 11 March 2011 and the preparation of another possible strong seismic event. Loop closure detection is essential for improving the long-term consistency and robustness of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) systems. Existing LiDAR-based loop closure approaches often rely on limited or partial geometric features, restricting their performance in complex environments. To address these limitations, this paper introduces a Density Triangle Descriptor (DTD). The proposed method first extracts keypoints from density images generated from LiDAR point clouds, and then constructs a triangle-based global descriptor that is invariant to rotation and translation, enabling robust structural representation. Furthermore, to enhance local discriminative ability, the neighborhood around each keypoint is modeled as a Gaussian distribution, and a local descriptor is derived from the entropy of its probability distribution. During loop closure detection, candidate matches are first retrieved via hash indexing of triangle edge lengths, followed by entropy-based local verification, and are finally refined by singular value decomposition for accurate pose estimation. Extensive experiments on multiple public datasets demonstrate that compared to STD, the proposed DTD improves the average F1 max score and EP by 18.30% and 20.08%, respectively, while achieving a 50.57% improvement in computational efficiency. Moreover, DTD generalizes well to solid-state LiDAR with non-repetitive scanning patterns, validating its robustness and applicability in complex environments. Full article

We study statistical dependence in the frequency domain using the integral probability metric (IPM) framework. We propose the uniform Fourier dependence measure (UFDM) defined as the uniform norm of the difference between the joint and product-marginal characteristic functions. We provide a theoretical analysis, highlighting key properties, such as invariances, monotonicity in linear dimension reduction, and a concentration bound. For the estimation of the UFDM, we propose a gradient-based algorithm with singular value decomposition (SVD) warm-up and show that this warm-up is essential for stable performance. The empirical estimator of UFDM is differentiable, and it can be integrated into modern machine learning pipelines. In experiments with synthetic and real-world data, we compare UFDM with distance correlation (DCOR), Hilbert–Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC), and matrix-based Rényi’s α-entropy functional (MEF) in permutation-based statistical independence testing and supervised feature extraction. Independence test experiments showed the effectiveness of UFDM at detecting some sparse geometric dependencies in a diverse set of patterns that span different linear and nonlinear interactions, including copulas and geometric structures. In feature extraction experiments across 16 OpenML datasets, we conducted 160 pairwise comparisons: UFDM statistically significantly outperformed other baselines in 20 cases and was outperformed in 13. Aiming at the problems of high complexity in source domain data, inaccessibility of target domain data, and unknown fault patterns in real-world industrial scenarios for mechanical fault diagnosis, this paper proposes a Feature Decomposition-based Source-Free Universal Domain Adaptation (FD-SFUniDA) framework for mechanical equipment fault diagnosis. First, the CBAM attention module is incorporated to enhance the ResNet-50 convolutional network for extracting feature information from source domain data. During the target domain adaptation phase, singular value decomposition is applied to the weights of the pre-trained model’s classification layer, orthogonally decoupling the feature space into a source-known subspace and a target-private subspace. Then, based on the magnitude of feature projections, a dynamic decision boundary is constructed and combined with an entropy threshold mechanism to accurately distinguish between known and unknown class samples. Furthermore, intra-class feature consistency is strengthened through neighborhood-expanded contrastive learning, and semantic weight calibration is employed to reconstruct the feature space, thereby suppressing the negative transfer effect. Finally, extensive experiments under multiple operating conditions on rolling bearing and reciprocating mechanism datasets demonstrate that the proposed method excels in addressing source-free fault diagnosis problems for mechanical equipment and shows promising potential for practical engineering applications in fault classification tasks. Purpose: Luggage X-rays suffer from low contrast, material overlap, and noise; dual-energy imaging reduces ambiguity but creates colour biases that impair segmentation. This study aimed to (1) employ connotative fusion by embedding realistic detonator patches into real X-rays to simulate threats and enhance unattended detection without requiring ground-truth labels; (2) thoroughly evaluate fusion techniques in terms of balancing image quality, information content, contrast, and the preservation of meaningful features. Methods: A total of 1000 X-ray luggage images and 150 detonator images were used for fusion experiments based on deep learning, transform-based, and feature-driven methods. The proposed approach does not need ground truth supervision. Deep learning fusion techniques, including VGG, FusionNet, and AttentionFuse, enable the dynamic selection and combination of features from multiple input images. The transform-based fusion methods convert input images into different domains using mathematical transforms to enhance fine structures. The Nonsubsampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT), Curvelet Transform, and Laplacian Pyramid (LP) are employed. Feature-driven image fusion methods combine meaningful representations for easier interpretation. Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Random Forest (RF), and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) are used to capture and compare texture details across source images. Entropy (EN), Standard Deviation (SD), and Average Gradient (AG) assess factors such as spatial resolution, contrast preservation, and information retention and are used to evaluate the performance of the analysed methods. Results: The results highlight the strengths and limitations of the evaluated techniques, demonstrating their effectiveness in producing sharpened fused X-ray images with clearly emphasized targets and enhanced structural details. Conclusions: The Laplacian Pyramid fusion method emerges as the most versatile choice for applications demanding a balanced trade-off. This is evidenced by its overall multi-criteria balance, supported by a composite (geometric mean) score on normalised metrics. It consistently achieves high performance across all evaluated metrics, making it reliable for detecting concealed threats under diverse imaging conditions. Full article

Frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR systems frequently experience noise interference during multi-target measurements in real-world applications, resulting in target overlapping and diminished detection accuracy. Conventional denoising approaches—such as Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and wavelet thresholding—are often constrained by challenges like mode mixing and the attenuation of weak target signals, which limits their detection precision. To address these limitations, this study presents a novel denoising framework that integrates an optimized Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) algorithm and singular value decomposition (SVD). The CEEMDAN algorithm’s two critical parameters—the noise standard deviation and the number of noise additions—are optimally determined using particle swarm optimization (PSO), with the envelope entropy of the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) serving as the fitness criterion. IMFs are subsequently selected based on spectral and amplitude comparisons with the original signal to facilitate initial signal reconstruction. Following CEEMDAN-based decomposition, SVD is employed with a normalized soft thresholding technique to further suppress residual noise. Validation using both synthetic and experimental datasets demonstrates the superior performance of the proposed approach over existing methods in multi-target scenarios. Specifically, it reduces the root mean square error (RMSE) by 45% to 59% and the mean square error (MSE) by 34% to 69%, and improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 1.85–4.38 dB and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) by 1.18–6.94 dB. These results affirm the method’s effectiveness in enhancing signal quality and target distinction in noisy FMCW LiDAR measurements. Full article

To address the issues of poor differentiation capability for high-order signals and low average recognition rates in existing communication modulation recognition techniques, this paper first performs denoising using an entropy-based dynamic Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method and proposes a three-channel convolutional gated recurrent units (GRU) model combined with an improved SE attention mechanism for automatic modulation recognition.The model denoises in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) signals using the SVD method to enhance signal quality. By combining one-dimensional (1D) convolutional and two-dimensional (2D) convolutional, it employs a three-channel approach to extract spatial features and capture local correlations. GRU is utilized to capture temporal sequence features so as to enhance the perception of dynamic changes. Additionally, an improved SE block is introduced to optimize feature representation, adaptively adjust channel weights, and improve classification performance. Experiments on the RadioML2016.10a dataset show that the model has a maximum classification recognition rate of 92.54%. Compared with traditional CNN, ResNet, CLDNN, GRU2, DAE, and LSTM2, the average recognition accuracy is improved by 5.41% to 8.93%. At the same time, the model significantly enhances the differentiation capability between 16QAM and 64QAM, reducing the average confusion probability by 27.70% to 39.40%. Full article

This study investigates the classification of damage modes in adhesively bonded carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites, a critical factor in advancing lightweight automotive design. Adhesive bonding, replacing traditional riveting, improves structural integrity while reducing weight and CO2 emissions. Mechanical testing on CFRP composites was performed, and acoustic emission (AE) signals were collected to evaluate damage mechanisms. A deep autoencoder (DAE) framework was developed to automate damage characterization by reducing AE signal dimensionality through singular value decomposition (SVD) and classifying features using the k-means algorithm. This approach effectively identified three primary damage modes: matrix cracking, interfacial debonding, and fiber breakage. Traditional AE features, such as entropy and amplitude were also classified and validated using spectral analysis. The DAE-based strategy demonstrated superior capability in real-time damage mode differentiation. Fractographic analysis confirmed crack growth in the adhesive layer, leading to interfacial debonding, fiber-matrix separation, and eventual fiber rupture. These findings highlight the DAE framework’s effectiveness in enhancing damage mode characterization, offering valuable insights for optimizing the structural performance of bonded CFRP composites in automotive applications. Series arc faults (SAFs) pose a significant threat to the safety of photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, the complex operating conditions of PV systems make accurate SAF detection challenging. To tackle this issue, this article proposes a SAF detection method based on time–frequency composite recurrence plots (TFCRPs). Initially, variational mode decomposition (VMD) is employed to decompose the current into distinct modes. Subsequently, the proposed TFCRP transforms these modes into two-dimensional matrices, enabling the measurement of composite similarity between different phase states. Lastly, extra tree (ET) is utilized to fuse the fractional recurrence entropy (FRE) and the singular values extracted from the matrices, thereby achieving SAF detection. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves a detection accuracy of 98.75% and can accurately detect SAFs under various operating conditions. Comparisons with different methods further highlight the advancement of the proposed method. Furthermore, the detection time of the proposed method (209 ms) meets the requirements of standard UL1699B. Full article

Water level forecasting has significant impacts on transportation, agriculture, and flood control measures. Accurate water level values can enhance the safety and efficiency of water conservancy hub operation scheduling, reduce flood risks, and are essential for ensuring sustainable regional development. Addressing the nonlinearity and non-stationarity characteristics of gate-front water level sequences, this paper introduces a gate-front water level forecasting method based on a GRU–TCN–Transformer coupled model and permutation entropy (PE) algorithm. Firstly, an analysis method combining Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) and Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) is used to separate the original water level data into different frequency modal components. The PE algorithm subsequently divides each modal component into sequences of high and low frequencies. The GRU model is applied to predict the high-frequency sequence part, while the TCN–Transformer combination model is used for the low-frequency sequence part. The forecasting from both models are combined to obtain the final water level forecasting value. Multiple evaluation metrics are used to assess the forecasting performance. The findings indicate that the combined GRU–TCN–Transformer model achieves a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.0154, a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.0205, and a Coefficient of Determination (R2) of 0.8076. These metrics indicate that the model outperforms machine learning Support Vector Machine (SVM) models, GRU models, Transformer models, and TCN–Transformer combination models in forecasting performance. The forecasting results have high credibility. This model provides a new reference for improving the accuracy of gate-front water level forecasting and offers significant insights for water resource management and flood prevention, demonstrating promising application prospects. Current super-resolution algorithms exhibit limitations when processing noisy remote sensing images rich in surface information, as they tend to amplify noise during the recovery of high-frequency signals. To mitigate this issue, this paper presents a novel approach that incorporates the concept of compressed sensing and explores the super-resolution problem of remote sensing images for space cameras, particularly for high-speed imaging systems. The proposed algorithm employs K-singular value decomposition (K-SVD) to jointly train high- and low-resolution image blocks, updating them column by column to obtain overcomplete dictionary pairs. This approach compensates for the deficiency of fixed dictionaries in the original algorithm. In the process of dictionary updating, we innovatively integrate the circle chaotic mapping into the solution process of the dictionary sequence, replacing pseudorandom numbers. This integration facilitates balanced traversal and simplifies the search for global optimal solutions. For the optimization problem of sparse coefficients, we utilize the orthogonal matching pursuit method (OMP) instead of the L1 norm convex optimization method used in most reconstruction techniques, thereby complementing the K-SVD dictionary update algorithm. After upscaling and denoising the image using the dictionary pair mapping relationship, we further emphasize image edge details with local gradients as constraints. When compared with various representative super-resolution algorithms, our algorithm effectively filters out noise and stains in low-resolution images. It not only performs well visually but also stands out in objective evaluation indicators such as the peak signal-to-noise ratio and information entropy. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in super-resolution remote sensing images, yielding high-quality remote sensing image data. Full article

Face recognition (FR) uses a passive approach to person authentication that avoids face-to-face contact. Among different FR techniques, most FR approaches place little emphasis on reducing powerful cryptography and instead concentrate on increasing recognition rates. In this paper, we have proposed the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models for FR by using ORL and Yale datasets. Facial images from the given data sets are divided into 3 portions, 4 portions, 5 portions, and 6 portions corresponding to their respective HMM hidden states being used in the HMM model. Quantized levels of eigenvalues and eigenvector coefficients of overlapping blocks of facial images define the observation states of the HMM model. For image selection and rejection, a threshold is calculated using singular value decomposition (SVD). After training HMM on 3 states HMM, 4 states HMM, 5 states HMM, and 6 states HMM, the recognition accuracies are 96.5%, 98.5%, 98.5%, and 99.5%, respectively, on the ORL database and 90.6667%, 94.6667%, 94.6667%, and 94.6667% on the Yale database. The CNN model uses convolutional layers, a max-pooling layer, a flattening layer, a dense layer, and a dropout layer. Relu is used as the activation function in all layers except in the last layer, where softmax is used as the activation function. Cross entropy is used as a loss function, and we have used the Adam optimizer in our proposed algorithm. The proposed CNN model has given 100% training and testing accuracy on the ORL data set. While using the Yale data set, the CNN model has a training accuracy of 100% and a testing accuracy of 85.71%. In this paper, our proposed model showed that the HMM model is cost-effective with lesser accuracy, while the CNN model is more accurate as compared to HMM but has a higher computational cost. Non-cooperative targets, such as birds and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are typical low-altitude, slow, and small (LSS) targets with low observability. Radar observations in such scenarios are often complicated by strong motion clutter originating from sources like airplanes and cars. Hence, distinguishing between birds and UAVs in environments with strong motion clutter is crucial for improving target monitoring performance and ensuring flight safety. To address the impact of strong motion clutter on discriminating between UAVs and birds, we propose a frequency correlation dual-SVD (singular value decomposition) reconstruction method. This method exploits the strong power and spectral correlation characteristics of motion clutter, contrasted with the weak scattering characteristics of bird and UAV targets, to effectively suppress clutter. Unlike traditional clutter suppression methods based on SVD, our method avoids residual clutter or target loss while preserving the micro-motion characteristics of the targets. Based on the distinct micro-motion characteristics of birds and UAVs, we extract two key features: the sum of normalized large eigenvalues of the target’s micro-motion component and the energy entropy of the time–frequency spectrum of the radar echoes. Subsequently, the kernel fuzzy c-means algorithm is applied to classify bird and UAV targets. The effectiveness of our proposed method is validated through results using both simulation and experimental data. Full article
