Background: Deceptive caffeine ingestion has shown inconsistent effects as an ergogenic aid for short-term exercises. Objective: Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential placebo effect of deceptive caffeine ingestion on short-term performance during countermovement and repeated-jump tests, as well as bench press throw and bench press-to-failure assessments, and to document any associated side effects. Methods: A repeated, randomized, and counterbalanced design was implemented to compare the effects of ingesting a placebo claimed to be caffeine with a control condition in which no substance was consumed. Twenty-five physically active young adults (17 men and 8 women) completed a countermovement jump (CMJ) test, a 15 s repeated-jump test, bench press throws at 25%, 50%, and 75% of 1RM, and a bench press-to-failure test at 75% of 1RM and also completed a questionnaire regarding potential side effects. Results: Performance was similar between the placebo and control in the CMJ (38.1 ± 6.8 vs. 37.5 ± 6.8 cm; p = 0.225; d = 0.25) and in the 15 s repeated-jump test (p > 0.05; trivial–small effects). In the bench press throw, propulsive mean velocity did not differ at 25% 1RM (p = 0.296; d = 0.23) or 50% 1RM (p = 0.626; d = 0.10). However, deceptive caffeine ingestion increased propulsive mean velocity at 75% 1RM (0.500 ± 0.131 vs. 0.480 ± 0.131 m/s; p = 0.024; d = 0.48) and increased repetitions to failure at the same load (11.9 ± 3.7 vs. 11.0 ± 3.1; p = 0.047; d = 0.42). Mean velocity during the first 3 repetitions tended to be higher with the placebo (p = 0.064; d = 0.39), while final repetitions were similar (p = 0.469; d = 0.15). The most common side effects were increased activeness (34.8%) and nervousness (17.4%). Conclusions: In summary, deceptive caffeine ingestion had minimal impact on jump and ballistic bench press performance in physically active individuals. However, repetitions to failure were improved by ≈1 repetition (+8.2%). These findings suggest that the placebo effect of caffeine is unlikely to serve as a reliable strategy for enhancing short-term exercise performance. Full article

This study investigated the effect of the angle between the blade and the inclined disc on particle trajectory correction during ejection from an organic fertilizer side-throwing device. Using the inclined disc device as the test subject, a blade-based coordinate system was established to model the complex relative particle motion under combined disc and blade inclination. Particle dynamics and blade forces were analyzed quadrantally, enabling the development of a mechanical model and the derivation of displacement equations. Numerical simulation, virtual simulation, and experimental testing yielded the following results: Under the current device parameters, the relative velocity between particles and the blade reaches its maximum when the angle between the blade and the inclined disc is 80°. Within the angle range from 65° to 85°, as the angle increases, the scattering angle of single-sided discs monotonically decreases, while that of dual-sided discs monotonously increases. At an angle of 65°, the trajectories of the dual-sided disc flows tend to converge. At 80°, the flow is at the critical point between convergence and divergence. The effective throwing distance first increases and then decreases, reaching a maximum at an angle of 80°. This study clarifies the relationship between the angle correction of blade–disc inclination and particle velocity and trajectory on the blade, providing a reliable mathematical model and simulation method for similar studies in the field of inclined disc centrifugal material ejection. The aims of this pilot study were to design a training protocol to improve the padel smash, based on the practice of medicine ball throws (shot put) and smashes (powerful smashes and smashes over the side fence), and to test the effectiveness of the designed training protocol. Four high-level male Finnish players completed two weekly sessions, each consisting of four sets of five medicine ball throws (2 kg), followed by five smashes. Sufficient rest between sets and repetitions was ensured to minimize fatigue and reduce injury risk while maximizing power output. Performance was assessed through pre- and post-tests. A paired t-test analyzed the powerful smash, while contingency tables and the Chi-square test (χ2) evaluated the smash over the side fence. Three of the four players showed a significant increase in powerful smash distance, while the success rate of smashes over the side fence improved but did not reach statistical significance. These findings suggest that the designed training protocol improves powerful smashes and smashes over the side fence, potentially optimizing performance. Future research with larger samples is needed to refine training guidelines and explore broader implications for performance, injury prevention, and long-term athlete development. Full article

Background/Objectives: The repetitive overhead throwing of baseball stresses the posterior shoulder, including the rotator cuff and capsule, causing stiffness, tissue thickening, and dysfunction. Previous studies on collegiate baseball players have linked these changes to glenohumeral internal rotation deficits, pain, and injuries. However, these studies primarily used acoustic radiation force impulse-based shear wave elastography (SWE), which has limitations, including tissue heating and lack of portability. The acute effects of pitching on infraspinatus (ISP) muscle elasticity in high school pitchers remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the acute impact of pitching on ISP muscle elasticity in high school baseball pitchers using continuous SWE (C-SWE), which is a safer and more portable method. The relationship between ISP muscle elasticity and pitching load was also examined. Methods: ISP muscle shear wave velocity (SWV), shoulder range of motion, and strength were evaluated in high school baseball pitchers. The participants were categorized into pitching and non-pitching groups based on whether they pitched with full effort on the day of their medical checkup. C-SWE was used to assess ISP muscle elasticity. Results: The pitching group had considerably higher ISP muscle SWV on the dominant side than the non-pitching group (p = 0.008). A significant positive correlation was observed between pitch and ISP muscle SWV (r = 0.467, p = 0.003). Conclusions: Repetitive pitching acutely increases ISP muscle stiffness in high school pitchers, contributing to posterior shoulder tightness. C-SWE is a safe and practical method for assessing tissue elasticity and developing injury prevention strategies. Full article

To solve the problem of straw cleaning and drip irrigation belt restoration for no-till seeding in drip irrigation areas, a staggered straw cleaning device was developed for no-till seeding, which is mainly composed of a front two-sided tine discs group, a drip irrigation belt laying mechanism, a middle single inner tine discs group, a rear single outer tine discs group. Different tine disc groups are set in longitudinal, transverse, and radial directions to move and throw the straw on the surface of the seeding strip. The critical parameters of the tine disc were designed and calculated, and the radius was determined to be 160 mm, the number of teeth was 12, and the theoretical working width was obtained. The movement and straw scattering process were analyzed, and the main influencing factors and the maximum straw scattering distances in the horizontal and vertical directions were determined. The interaction model of staggered tine discs group–straw–soil is established using the discrete element method (DEM). The forwarding speed, rotating speed, disc rake angle, and lateral distance of the middle tine discs were used as influencing factors, and the straw cleaning rate and the mass of straw returned in the drip irrigation coverage area were selected as the text indexes to carry out quadratic orthogonal rotation experiments. The quadratic regression model of the three sensitive parameters on the cleaning rate and the mass of straw returned in the drip irrigation coverage area was constructed and optimized. The optimal solutions were obtained: the forwarding speed was 9 km/h, the disc rake angle was 33.7°, and the lateral distance of the middle tine discs was 529 mm. The field validation test was carried out, and the results showed that the straw cleaning was 89.13%, the straw cleaning width of the seed strip was 527.2 mm, and the straw coverage rate of the drip irrigation area was 80.74%. This achievement can provide a reference for straw cleaning of no-till seeding under drip irrigation. Full article

Background: Malnutrition has extensive consequences, affecting multiple levels of functioning, including motor skill impairments. However, current interventions have mainly focused on dietary treatment, often neglecting motor impairments and relying solely on clinical and anthropometric indicators to assess treatment response. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining the combined effect of ready-to-use supplementary food (RUSF) and high-intensity motor learning (HiML) on motor skill-related physical fitness in children with moderate thinness (MT). Methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted among children 5–7 years old with MT in Jimma Town. Three schools were randomized to three intervention arms, including a total of 69 children: RUSF (n = 23), RUSF + HiML (n = 25), and no intervention (n = 21). The HiML training was applied for 12 weeks, and RUSF was distributed daily for 12 weeks. HiML was given daily (1 h/day, 5 days/week). The primary outcome was motor skill-related physical fitness assessed at baseline and endline using the performance and fitness test battery (PERF-FIT). The changes from baseline to endline measurements were calculated as differences, and the mean difference in these changes/differences (DID) was then computed as the outcome measure. AN(C)OVA was used to directly investigate differences between groups. Statistical significance was declared at p-value ≤ 0.05. Results: There was a significantly greater and comparable improvement in both the RUSF and RUSF + HiML groups compared to the control group for the ‘stepping’ item (p < 0.001), the ‘side jump’ item (p < 0.001), the ‘standing long jump’ (p < 0.001) and the ‘jumping and hopping’ total (p = 0.005). The RUSF + HiML group showed significantly greater improvements in the ‘bounce and catch’ (p = 0.001) and ‘throw and catch’ (p < 0.001) items compared to the RUSF group, which, in turn, demonstrated greater improvement than the control group in both items (p < 0.01). Conclusions: A 12-week combination of RUSF + HiML was proven to be safe in children with MT and caused clear improvements in motor skill-related physical fitness. When the children received RUSF with HiML training, similar gains in stepping, side jump, standing long jump, and jumping and hopping were observed, except for the ball skills where the HiML training group performed better. Aiming at the problem of the wheat straw and stubble of the previous crop blocking the opener during the operation of the summer peanut no-tillage seeder under straw incorporation modes, an oblique stubble-cutting and side-throwing anti-blocking device that can simultaneously cut the stubble and throw the straw was designed. The structure and working principle of the device were clarified, and the key structure of the anti-blocking device was designed through theoretical analysis. According to the kinematics analysis of the rotary blade cutting and throwing of the root–soil composite, the key factors affecting the operation quality of the device and the range of values were determined. The quadratic orthogonal rotation combination design test was carried out with the motion inclination angle, bending angle, and advancing velocity as the test factors, and the straw clearance rate, stubble-cutting rate, and operation power consumption as the indexes. The discrete element simulation test was carried out in EDEM. The significance test of the test results was carried out in Design-Expert, and the influence of each factor on the test index and the interaction between the factors were determined. Then the regression model was optimized by multi-objective function, and the optimal parameter combination was obtained as follows: The motion inclination angle was 22°, the bending angle was 58°, and the advance velocity was 7.7 km/h. At this time, the straw clearance rate of the seedling belt was 92.55%, the root stubble-cutting rate was 95%, and the operation power consumption was 1.80 kW. The field test shows that the machine had good passing capacity, the straw clearance rate of the seedling belt was 91.04%, the root stubble-cutting rate was 92.98%, and the operation power consumption of the single group of stubble cutting device was 1.92 kW. The difference between the field test results and the simulation test was less than 6%, which met the local agronomic requirements and proved that the anti-blocking device had good operation quality. Background: Caffeine is a widely recognized ergogenic aid for enhancing exercise performance. However, its effect on throwing performance has been less studied, yielding contradictory results. Objectives: The main aim of the study was to analyze the potential ergogenic effects of a moderate dose of caffeine (3 mg·kg−1 body mass) on vertical jump performance and throwing distance during a simulated competition in trained discus and hammer throwers. Methods: In a randomized, counterbalanced, and repeated measures design, 14 well-trained throwers (9 hammer throwers and 5 discus throwers; age 24.8 ± 6.3 years old, training 14.9 ± 5.0 h per week, competing experience 10.5 ± 6.1 years) performed a countermovement jump (CMJ) test, a modified throw, and a complete throw after the ingestion of 3 mg·kg⁻¹ body mass of caffeine or a placebo. Each participant performed three maximal-effort valid modified throws of his/her respective event (i.e., hammer or discus throw), plus three maximal-effort valid official throws (up to five tries, respectively, in case any attempt was called as foul). Throwing distance was measured according to World Athletics regulations using a metal tape, while release speed was assessed with a radar device. After the performance measurements, participants completed a form about side effects prevalence. Results: Caffeine, compared to placebo, increased throw distance (3.0 ± 5.1%, p = 0.048) and speed release (5.7 ± 8.7%, p = 0.03) for the complete throw, and distance (3.6 ± 4.4%, p = 0.01) and speed release (4.8 ± 7.4 %, p = 0.01) for the modified throw. Caffeine ingestion did not significantly improve jump height (1.1 ± 4.3%, p = 0.28), although it improved force and power on braking and the propulsive phases of the CMJ (p < 0.05). Caffeine only increased the prevalence of activeness (p < 0.05). Conclusions: An acute moderate dose of caffeine enhanced hammer and discus throw performance in well-trained throwers during a simulated competitive setting, with minimal adverse side effects. Aiming at the problem of the low rate of resource utilization of large amounts of grape branch pruning and the high cost of leaving the garden, we design a kind of grape branch picking and crushing collection machine that integrates the collection of strips, the picking up, crushing, and collecting operations. The crushing and collecting parts of the machine are simulated, analyzed, and tested. Using the method of numerical simulation, combined with the results of the pre-branch material properties measurement, the branch crushing process is simulated based on LS-DYNA software. Our analysis found that in the branch destruction process, not only does knife cutting exist, but the bending fracture of the opposite side of the cutting place also exists. With the increase in the knife roller speed, the cutting resistance of the tool increases, reaching 2690 N at 2500 r/min. In the cutting simulation under different tool edge angles, the cutting resistance of the tool is the smallest when the edge angle is 55°, which is 1860 N, and this edge angle is more suitable for branch crushing and cutting. Using Fluent software to analyze the characteristics of the airflow field of the pulverizing device, it was found that with the increase in the knife roller speed, the inlet flow and negative pressure of the pulverizing chamber increase. When the knife roller speed is 2500 r/min, the inlet flow rate and negative pressure are 1.92 kg/s and 37.16 Pa, respectively, which will be favorable to the feeding of the branches, but the speed is too high and will also lead to the enhancement of the vortex in some areas within the pulverizing device, which will in turn affect the feeding of the branches as well as the throwing out of pulverized materials. Therefore, the speed range of the pulverizing knife roller was finally determined to be 1800~2220 r/min. Based on the ANSYS/Model module modal analysis of the crushing knife roller, the knife roller of the first six orders of the intrinsic frequency and vibration pattern, the crushing knife roller of the lowest order had a modal intrinsic frequency of 137.42 Hz, much larger than the crushing knife roller operating frequency of 37 Hz, above which the machine will not resonate during operation. The research results can provide a theoretical basis and technical support for other similar crops to be crushed and collected. Full article

The trencher design of the pre-cut transverse sugarcane planter is the basis for realizing deep planting and shallow burial. Aimed at the problems of insufficient seeding space provided by furrows and high resistance to trenching, a structural configuration of a combined trencher suitable for transverse cane planting agronomy was proposed to improve the stability, simplicity, and efficiency of trenching. The collaborative operations of components such as the soil lifting of the leak-proof plow, the soil fragmentation and throwing of the double-disc rotary tiller, the rebound of the fender, the lateral diversion of the furrowing plow, and the motion control of the double rocker arms were comprehensively utilized. The trenching principle of using double-sided guards to block soil backfilling to form a seeding space was applied, as well as pre-side diversion to reduce the forward resistance of plow surfaces. The simulation of the trenching process showed that the combined trencher was available in terms of soil particle transfer and dynamic space-forming capabilities, and the stress distribution of the advancing plow surface was analyzed. Moreover, based on the minimum resistance characteristics, the optimal spacing between the rotary tiller and the furrowing plow and the blade arrangement mode were configured, and the structural parameters of the furrowing plow were optimized to include a soil penetration angle of 20°, an oblique cutting angle of 75°, and a curvature radius of 280 mm. Field experiments have proven that the soil entry movement trajectory, the length and width of the accessible seed placement space, and the average planting depth of cane seeds could all achieve respective design anticipations of the combined trencher. The measured trenching resistance was 7609.7 N, with an error of 22.2% from the predicted value under the same configuration. Full article

Since 1964, Japan has been conducting a wide fitness and athletic skills evaluation among 2000–3000 school children. This study used data made public by the Japan Sports Agency from four events that have continuously been evaluated from 1964 to 2021—grip strength, 50 meter dash, repetitive side jumps, and softball throw—to depict a secular trend over the course of 58 years. This is to statistically categorize these into generations, establishing secular contrast by identifying high and low scores for each event within the categorized generations, with the intent to examine the factors embedded within the background. The generations that had the highest average across all four events were the measurements made in 1970–1993 for males and in 1972–1994 for females. Changes made to the curriculum guidelines may have played a role in the differences found within each event. The goal of physical education and its syllabus and assigned hours in the curriculum guidelines are revised approximately every 10 years to meet social demand. Changes in the social and living environments surrounding children may be exhibited in the form of secular contrast in the measured physical fitness and athletic skills. Full article

Elbow injuries related to the throwing motion in baseball during the growth period present difficulties for early detection and may cause serious future disabilities. This study aimed to comprehensively determine the characteristics and clinical assessment of elbow pain in youth baseball players. Two hundred and sixteen young baseball players underwent elbow medical examination. Basic information and physical examination, clinical assessment, and ultrasonography results were examined. Univariate analyses were statistically performed between the pain-free (98 participants) and elbow pain (118 participants) groups. The mean age was 11.6 years, and ultrasonographic abnormalities were found on the medial side of the elbow in 37.5%. In total, 118 (54.6%) participants experienced elbow pain, with 64.4% of them complaining of elbow pain on the medial side. Players with multiple positions (≥2 positions) had a significantly higher prevalence of elbow pain. Height, weight, length of baseball experience, and positive rates of horizontal flexion and moving valgus stress tests were higher in the elbow pain group than in the pain-free group. The risk factors and clinical assessment for elbow pain are useful for the prevention and early detection of throwing elbow injuries in youth baseball players. Full article

Kicking strikes are fundamental in combat sports such as Taekwondo, karate, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and mixed martial arts. This review aimed to explore the measurement methods, kinematics such as velocities, kinetics such as impact force, determinants, and injury potential of kicking strikes in combat sports. Searches of Academic Search Premier, The Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were conducted for studies that measured kicking velocity and impact force. A total of 88 studies were included in the review. Studies most frequently involved only male participants (49%) aged between 18 and 30 years of age (68%). Studies measuring velocity predominantly implemented camera-based motion capture systems (96%), whereas studies measuring impact force displayed considerable heterogeneity in their measurement methods. Five primary strikes were identified for which foot velocities ranged from 5.2 to 18.3 m/s and mean impact force ranged from 122.6 to 9015 N. Among the techniques analysed, the roundhouse kick exhibited the highest kicking velocity at 18.3 m/s, whilst the side kick produced the highest impact force at 9015 N. Diverse investigation methodologies contributed to a wide value range for kicking velocities and impact forces being reported, making direct comparisons difficult. Kicking strikes can be categorised into throw-style or push-style kicks, which modulate impact through different mechanisms. Kicking velocity and impact force are determined by several factors, including technical proficiency, lower body strength and flexibility, effective mass, and target factors. The impact force generated by kicking strikes is sufficient to cause injury, including fracture. Protective equipment can partially attenuate these forces, although more research is required in this area. Athletes and coaches are advised to carefully consider the properties and potential limitations of measurement devices used to assess impact force. Full article

This paper presents a 250 kHz bidirectional battery charger circuit using a GaN HEMT. The charger is subjected to a high-/low-side constant voltage at 200 V/20 V. The charger circuit is a hybrid of the LLC and flyback circuit topologies. Both the power output analysis and efficiency control of this circuit are simplified when the magnetization current is minimized using the low-resistance GaN HEMT. The switching frequency is controlled to match the series resonance in a way that is analogous to conventional LLC circuit controls, while the duty ratio that determines the power output and the dead time, which determines the zero voltage switching, is controlled in an analogous manner to the flyback circuit control. The charging and discharging modes were altered by applying a double-throw relay that changes the transformer turn ratio, which is different from conventional LLC designs using the switching frequency adjustment. A nominal turn ratio with Np = 35 and Ns = 3.5 for a 200 V/20 V converter can only produce an internal series resonance with no current flowing in any charging direction. The proposed circuit using a transformer with multiple windings (Np = 35, Ns,F = 4, and Ns,R = 3) was fabricated to deliver 125 W output power from the power grid battery to the vehicle battery in the forward (charging) mode and 90 W in the reverse (discharging) mode. The conversion efficiency was calculated to be as high as 97% in the forward mode and 95% in the reverse mode. The high conversion efficiency is due to the characteristics of the GaN HEMT, including low resistive and switching losses. The equations derived in this paper associate these losses with the series resonant frequency and power conversion rate, which highlight the advantages of using a GaN HEMT in this CLLC design. Probiotics are among those products, the use of which is increasing, and they are available primarily as food/dietary supplements, as well as in the form of medicines. This study aims to assess the attitudes and practices of health professionals and students of health sciences, give a short overview of the probiotics currently on the market, and conduct a screening of five food supplements and one drug with respect to antibiotic resistance. Nearly half of the respondents in our survey state that probiotics have no side effects, while only 6.3% believe that the use of probiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. In addition, more than 40% of the participants throw unused probiotics into municipal waste. The market analysis results indicate that probiotic products on the Serbian market have highly variable CFU counts, while the declared health claims cover numerous beneficial health effects, and they are sometimes even registered as medicines. Lactobacilli are frequently present in probiotic supplements, and are sold in pharmacies and online. The experimental results showed that antibiotic resistance is present in different types of lactobacilli in probiotic products. The risk of using probiotics, regardless of their beneficial health effects, should be taken into account in the future. An update to the regulations governing probiotics, including a stipulation for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) testing, should be established, and guidelines for their proper use and disposal put into place.
