Ecological Restoration Reshapes Ecosystem Service Interactions: A 30-Year Study from China’s Southern Red-Soil Critical Zone

Situated in the southern hilly-mountain belt of China’s “Three Zones and Four Belts Strategy”, Gannan region is a critical ecological shelter belt for the Ganjiang River. Decades of intensive mineral extraction and irrational agricultural development have rendered it into an ecologically fragile area. Consequently, multiple restoration initiatives have been implemented in the region over recent decades. However, it remains unclear how relationships among ecosystem services have evolved under these interventions and how future ecosystem management should be optimized based on these changes. Thus, in this study, we simulated and assessed the spatiotemporal dynamics of five key ESs in Gannan region from 1990 to 2020. Through integrated correlation, clustering, and redundancy analyses, we quantified ES interactions, tracked the evolution of ecosystem service bundles (ESBs), and identified their socio-ecological drivers. Despite a 31% decline in water yield, ecological restoration initiatives drove substantial improvements in key regulating services: carbon storage increased by 6.9 × 1012 gC while soil conservation rose by 4.8 × 108 t. Concurrently, regional habitat quality surged by 45% in mean scores, and food production increased by 2.1 × 105 t. Critically, synergistic relationships between habitat quality, soil retention, and carbon storage were progressively strengthened, whereas trade-offs between food production and habitat quality intensified. Further analysis revealed that four distinct ESBs—the Agricultural Production Bundle (APB), Urban Development Bundle (UDB), Eco-Agriculture Transition Bundle (ETB), and Ecological Protection Bundle (EPB)—were shaped by slope, forest cover ratio, population density, and GDP. Notably, 38% of the ETB transformed into the EPB, with frequent spatial interactions observed between the APB and UDB. These findings underscore that future ecological restoration and conservation efforts should implement coordinated, multi-service management mechanisms. Full article

Urban disaster risks are escalating, and university campus emergency shelters (UCESs) are key to alleviating the supply–demand imbalance in emergency shelter services (ESSs) within high-density central urban areas. However, existing studies lacked the measurement of UCES service effectiveness from a regional supply–demand perspective, limiting the ability to guide planning practices. Therefore, we focused on the capacity of UCESs to improve regional supply–demand relationships and developed a service effectiveness evaluation framework for UCESs in the central urban area of Tianjin under an earthquake scenario. We identified emergency shelter spaces within the campuses and developed a campus–city collaborative shelter capacity model to determine their service supply capacity. Then we quantified regional service demand driven by seismic risk. Finally, we quantified the service effectiveness of each UCES by constructing a service effectiveness evaluation model. Results showed that (1) the total shelter capacity and service coverage of 13 UCESs accounted for approximately 32.1% of the central district’s population and 67.5% of its land area, indicating their strong potential to provide large-scale ESSs. (2) Average seismic risk values ranged from 0.200 to 0.260, exhibiting the characteristic of being higher in the south and lower in the north. (3) Service effectiveness was classified into three levels—higher (1.150–1.257), medium (0.957–0.988), and lower (0.842–0.932)—corresponding to planning interventions that can be implemented based on them. This study aims to reveal differences between different UCESs to improve regional supply–demand relationships by evaluating their service effectiveness and supporting refined emergency management and planning decisions. Forest ecosystems represent a natural repository of biodiversity, bioenergy, food, timber, water, medicine, wildlife shelter, and pollution control. In many countries, forests offer great potential to provide biogenic resources that could be utilized for large-scale biotechnological synthesis and products. The evolving nanotechnology could be an excellent platform for the transformation of forest products into value-added nanoparticles (NPs). It also serves as a tool for commercial production, placing the forest at the heart of conservation and sustainable management strategies. NPs are groups of atoms with a size ranging from 1 to 100 nm. This review analyzes the scholarly articles published over the last 25 years on the forest and woody plant-based green synthesis of NPs, highlighting the plant parts and applications discussed. The biosynthesis of nanomaterials from plant extracts provides inexpensiveness, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and environmental nontoxicity to the resultant NPs. The leaf is the most critical organ in woody plants, and it is widely used in NP biosynthesis, perhaps due to its central functions of bioactive metabolite production and storage. Most biosynthesized NPs from tree species have been used and tested for medical applications. For sustainable advancements in forest-based nanotechnology, broader species coverage, expanded applications, and interdisciplinary collaboration are essential. Full article

The archaeological complex of the Benzú rock shelter and cave, located in Ceuta (Spain), represents a heritage site of significant scientific and historical value that is currently at risk due to natural processes and, in particular, the activity of a nearby quarry. This site has been occupied from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age and consequently has been the subject of systematic research since 2002, focusing on its stratigraphic sequence, lithic technology, exploitation of marine resources, and the connection between both shores of the Strait of Gibraltar. With the aim of preserving this endangered heritage, a methodology based on advanced digital technologies such as photogrammetry, 3D laser scanning, and GNSS georeferencing has been implemented. These tools have enabled the creation of high-precision, three-dimensional models of the rock shelter and the cave, which are useful for both documentation and monitoring of their structural condition. In addition, fracture networks have been identified, revealing a high degree of geotechnical vulnerability, exacerbated by blasting activities at the nearby quarry. The project has produced a digital twin of the site in an open access format, serving not only for preventive conservation but also for its enhancement through virtual tours, augmented reality, and accessible outreach activities. This digitalization has been essential to facilitate the access to heritage, particularly in areas that are physically difficult to access. Finally, the integration of these digital resources into institutional policies for the sustainable management of heritage is proposed, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary approaches that combine archaeology, geotechnology, and scientific communication. The experience at Benzú is presented as a replicable model for the protection, interpretation, and dissemination of heritage sites located in fragile and threatened environments. Full article

Ecological determinants of avian population dynamics are essential for effective wildlife management and conservation. Black and grey francolins are classified as being of least concern by the IUCN and are an ecologically significant bird in the northern regions of Pakistan. Although habitat degradation and overhunting have adversely affected their populations, research on the population structure and habitat preferences of the Totali Game Reserve, Buner District, Pakistan, remains limited. The present study applied distance sampling via the line transect method to estimate population densities and the quadrat method to assess vegetation characteristics across three distinct habitats. A statistical analysis revealed significant variations in densities across the three habitat types—agricultural lands, agroforests, and pasturelands—with both species exhibiting distinct preferences for pastureland ecosystems. Seasonal trends indicated that autumn represented the peak period for the population, driven by post-breeding surges and optimal habitat conditions. Moreover, both species demonstrated a strong affinity for habitats dominated by specific plant species, including hopbush, raspberry, barberry, and blackberry, which provide a critical resource for food, foraging, nesting, and shelter. These findings highlight the ecological importance of pasturelands and specific vegetation types for supporting the survival of these species. Furthermore, conservation efforts should prioritize the preservation and restoration of pastureland ecosystems and incorporate rigorous monitoring programs to guide adaptive management strategies aimed at mitigating population declines. Managing relinquished/stray dogs is a significant socio-economic and ethical challenge necessitating structured policies to ensure animal welfare and integration into society. Critical to successful rehoming is careful assessment of a dog’s temperament/behavior and appropriate matching of a dog to an owner. Shelter dogs’ involvement in canine-assisted interventions (CAIs) provides a potential avenue for rehoming through appropriate dog educational programs. CAIs consist of structured interactions between dog and clients targeted at specific groups with physical/psychological/emotional impairments in various settings. However, there is a lack of standardized protocols for assessing shelter dogs’ suitability for CAI, raising ethical concerns regarding selection/training practices. This study explores the ethical dimensions of rehoming shelter dogs for CAI, employing a philosophical framework considering the responsibilities of humans/veterinarians toward companion animals and how societal perceptions of human–animal relationships impact decision-making in this context. An ethical matrix is applied to evaluate the implications of rehoming decisions on canine and human interests. Our findings highlight the need for a balanced, responsible approach that respects the individuality of dogs while promoting their potential roles in human society. Ethical guidelines for the selection and training of shelter dogs for CAI could enhance their welfare, improve adoption rates, and reinforce the value of the human–animal bond. Full article

A major reason people surrender their dogs or fail to adopt them from shelters is due to concerns regarding the management of behavioral issues. This makes effective training of everyday obedience behaviors crucial to dog welfare. Here, we test the playful learning hypothesis to examine whether play after a training session increases a dog’s success in learning two basic Canine Good Citizen behaviors: “sit” and “stay”. In two studies, the dogs experienced brief training sessions and then were assigned to either play or rest. The next day, they returned for another brief training session, and we measured any change in the duration that the dogs were able to hold a “sit” and “stay” from the first day. In Experiment 1, the subjects with low baseline levels of ability improved more after playing than those subjects that simply rested after training. However, Experiment 2, which further controlled for exercise and time spent with trainers, and standardized the measure of success across dogs regardless of their initial ability levels, did not replicate the improved performance in response to play after a training session. Overall, we find limited support for the application of the playful learning hypothesis to everyday training and suggest avenues for future research to determine how play might improve training outcomes for pet dogs. All animals require the ability to use visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory information to survive through activities including locating and identifying conspecifics including potential mates, locating food or shelter, or noticing an approaching predator. Detecting such information invariably requires sensory organs. The morphology of sensory organs evolves under natural selection to optimise the ability to detect salient cues and signals against the background noise in the natural environment. The rapidly proliferating anthropogenic impacts on almost all natural environments include light, noise, and chemical pollution, which can interfere with an animal’s ability to detect visual, acoustic or seismic, and olfactory information, respectively. Many studies examine the resulting changes in the characteristics of signals or the behavioural responses to them in affected natural populations, but very few examine the resulting changes in the sensory organs required to detect the signals; those that do all find evidence of morphological changes. Here, I review the current knowledge on the impact of anthropogenic pollution on sensory organ morphology in wild and captive populations, highlighting knowledge gaps and future directions for addressing them. This is especially important in the context of the growing recognition of the cruciality of sensory ecology in the design of effective threatened species conservation programs and invasive species management strategies. This paper proposes a digital low-altitude airspace unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) path planning method tailored for urban risk environments and conducts an operational capacity assessment of the airspace. The study employs a vertical–horizontal grid partitioning technique to achieve airspace grid-based modeling, classifying and configuring “management-operation” grids. By integrating multi-source heterogeneous data, including building structures, population density, and sheltering factor, a grid-based discrete risk quantification model is established to evaluate comprehensive mid-air collision risk, ground impact risk, third-party risk, and UAV turning risk. A path planning method considering the optimization of the turning points of parallelograms was proposed, and the Parallel-A* algorithm was adopted for its solution. Finally, an airspace operational capacity assessment model and a conflict simulation model for urban risk environments are developed to quantify the operational capacity of urban low-altitude airspace. Using Liuhe District in Nanjing as the experimental area, the study reveals that the environmental airspace risk decreases significantly with increasing flight altitude and eventually stabilizes. In the implementation of path planning, compared with the A* and Weight-A* algorithms, the Parallel-A* algorithm demonstrates clear advantages in terms of lower average comprehensive risk and fewer turning points. In the operational capacity assessment experiments, the airspace capacity across different altitude layers increases with flight altitude and stabilizes after comprehensive risk is reduced. This research provides a theoretical foundation for the scientific management and optimal resource allocation of urban low-altitude airspace, facilitating the safe application and sustainable development of UAVs in urban environments. Residential green space (RGS), as a frequently visited green space by residents, is the main space for daily activities and interactions, and its quality directly affects residents’ physical and mental health. Although many studies have revealed the impact of green space characteristics on health, research on the relationship between its environmental elements and health is still insufficient. This study selected five types of residential area in the central urban area of Beijing for investigation, collecting people’s green space perception, usage, and self-rated health information, and, using stepwise regression analysis, exploring the impact of RGS environmental factors on residents’ self-rated health under different vegetation cover rates. The results suggest the following: (1) Residents’ perception and usage of RGS characteristics are closely related to their self-rated health status, but the impact of environmental factors varies depending on vegetation coverage. (2) Maximizing natural features and cultural symbols is crucial for residential areas with high greenery. In residential areas with moderate vegetation, priority should be given to enhancing path elements, maintenance and shelter. For residential areas with low greenery cover, efforts should focus on strengthening fitness facilities and improving shelter to promote people’s health. (3) The impact of activity duration on usage behavior is most significant. These findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the significance of RGS quality in urban residential areas. They also provide a reference for the optimization and management of the living environment and support the sustainable development of community environments. Full article

Disasters can be defined as natural, technological, and human-induced events that cause loss of life and socio-economic impacts in societies and stop normal life. Türkiye faces many disasters. The loss of life and economic losses caused by these disasters vary according to the type of disaster. Earthquakes are the natural disasters that affect Türkiye the most. Described as the disaster of the century, the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes occurred on 6 February 2023 at 04:17 and 13:24 Turkish time. These earthquakes, with epicenters in Pazarcık (Kahramanmaraş) and Elbistan (Kahramanmaraş) with magnitudes of Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6, affected 11 provinces including Kahramanmaraş, Hatay, and Malatya, killing 50,399 people and damaging 1,279,727 buildings. One of the most significant challenges following earthquakes is the issue of housing, which is addressed through the implementation of temporary housing units. This study aimed to evaluate the temporary shelter areas created after the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes within the framework of regulations and standards in Türkiye and internationally. The study data were collected through direct observation and participant observation. For this purpose, the “Vali Saim Çotur Tent City”, which is located in the central Onikişubat district of Kahramanmaraş and is the second largest tent city, was examined. As a result of the examination, it was concluded that the tent city did not comply with national and international standards. Based on the findings and results of this study, it is recommended that disaster plans are revised and training programs organized for practitioners in order to prevent similar mistakes in future disasters. Urban free-roaming cats present challenges like noise, urination, defecation, property damage, public health risks, and wildlife predation. Traditional enforcement methods, such as containment laws and impounding, are ineffective, especially in low-income areas, where many free-roaming cats live. These cats are often cared for by “semi-owners”, who feed them without formal ownership. Financial barriers to sterilization for owned and semi-owned cats in these areas result in unplanned litters, sustaining the free-roaming population and burdening local authorities and animal welfare organizations. Cats causing complaints are frequently impounded and euthanized, affecting the mental health of veterinary, shelter, and council staff. This paper critiques punitive, compliance-driven strategies and highlights the success of assistive Community Cat Programs offering free sterilization, microchipping, and registration. In Banyule, Victoria, such a program reduced cat impoundments by 66%, euthanasia by 82%, and complaints by 36% between 2013 and 2021. Two other programs in large cities and rural towns in NSW and a rural town in Queensland have now reported similar results. Based on the One Welfare framework, these programs address the interconnectedness of animal welfare, human well-being, and environmental health. By removing financial barriers, they build trust between authorities and caregivers, improving compliance and welfare for cats, communities, and wildlife. However, following the loss of key program staff and the reintroduction of financial barriers in Banyule, cat intake rose by 140% between 2022 and 2024, demonstrating the detrimental impact of financial barriers and punitive approaches. This underscores the importance of sustained, community-based solutions and legislative reforms that prioritize humane, barrier-free strategies. Understanding the critical success factors for Community Cat Programs is essential for effective cat management. Full article

Microplastic Filtration by a Coastal Mangrove Wetland as a Novel Ecosystem Service

Biscayne Bay in southeastern Florida, USA, has experienced dramatic ecological declines due to pollution. The Biscayne Bay and Southeastern Everglades Ecosystem Restoration will deliver water from a canal adjacent to coastal mangroves, intercepting pollutants before they are deposited into the estuary. Given their demonstrated capacity to filter nutrients and other contaminants from the water column, we hypothesized that mangrove wetlands also filter microplastics (“MPs”). Water and sediment samples were taken from 3 “zones”: the L-31E canal, a potential MP source; interior, dwarf mangroves; and coastal, tidal fringe mangroves. These three environments were replicated in coastal basins with and without canal culverts. MPs were expected to vary seasonally and be more abundant and larger in the dwarf zone and in low-bulk density sediments as particles settled into peat soils. In sediment, MPs were more abundant in the dry season (average 0.073 ± 0.102 (SD) MPs/g dw) before getting flushed by overland runoff resulting in greater concentrations in water during the wet season (average 0.179 ± 0.358 (SD) MPs/L). MPs were most abundant and larger in the low bulk density sediments of the dwarf zone, likely due to sheltering from fragmentation. Culvert presence had no effect, but MPs may increase as waterflows increase to planned volumes. Understanding MP dynamics enables managers to predict water quality impacts and leverage the potential ecosystem service of MP filtration by mangrove wetlands. Full article

Comprehensive Assessment of Nine Fine-Resolution Global Forest Cover Products in the Three-North Shelter Forest Program Region

Accurate forest cover maps are essential for forest conservation and sustainable development. Numerous global forest cover products have emerged in recent years; however, most tend to neglect sparsely forested arid and semi-arid areas, such as the Three-North Shelter Forest (TNSF) Program Region in China. Despite their sparse distribution, forests in these areas play a vital role in maintaining global ecological balance and biodiversity. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation of these products is necessary. In this study, the performance of nine global forest cover products was systematically investigated at a 10–30 m resolution (GlobeLand30, GLC_FCS30D, FROM-GLC30, FROM-GLC10, ESA World Cover, ESRI Land Cover, GFC30, GFC 2020, and GFC) in the TNSF region around 2020. Specifically, a novel and comprehensive validation dataset was first generated by integrating all available open-access validation datasets in the TNSF region after visual interpretation. Second, the consistency and accuracy of nine forest cover products were evaluated, and their discrepancies with government statistical data were analyzed. The results indicate that GFC2020 provides the highest overall accuracy (OA) of 90.49%, followed by ESA World Cover, while GlobeLand30 had the lowest accuracy of 84.78%. Meanwhile, compared with statistical data, all nine products underestimated forest areas, especially in these hyper-arid zones (aridity index < 0.03). Notably, 31.04% of the area is identified as forest by only one product, attributable to differences in forest definitions and remote sensing data among the products. Therefore, this study provides a detailed assessment and analysis of nine global forest cover products from multiple perspectives, offering valuable insights for users in selecting appropriate forest cover products and supporting forest management. Traditional methods for managing free-roaming cats in Australia primarily depend on legislation and enforcement to achieve compliance. State laws and local regulations mandate confinement, sterilization, registration, and identification and limit the number of cats kept, with penalties for breaches. However, these strategies fail to address underlying issues like financial constraints in low-income areas and the prevalence of semi-owned cats. Containment mandates often result in increased complaints, shelter intake, and euthanasia, without effectively reducing cat-related problems. Research shows that these approaches are expensive, difficult to enforce, and place a disproportionate burden on disadvantaged communities. Moreover, they negatively affect the mental health of shelter staff and animal management officers, who are frequently exposed to euthanasia and ongoing challenges. An alternative “One Welfare” framework, which recognizes the interconnectedness of animal, human, and environmental welfare, has proven more effective. Programs that provide support and resources, particularly for cat sterilization and microchipping, while fostering the human–animal bond improve outcomes for both cats and caregivers. Shifting from punitive measures to collaborative, community-driven strategies is crucial for managing free-roaming cats in a way that benefits animals, people, and the broader community, while protecting wildlife.
