Effects of Dietary Supplementation with Extruded Linseed on Growth Performance and Meat Quality of Young Holstein Bulls

Beef production in Greece is a sector that has been characterized by a decline in both the output and the number of beef-producing animals over the last decades. The major challenge is low beef self-sufficiency; only 19.1% of demand is met by domestic production. The latter leads to a growing reliance on imports of both live animals and carcasses. Hence, the fattening of young bulls from dairy breeds could be an option to address this challenge subject to improving the quality of produced meat. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of extruded linseed in the diet of young bulls on their performance and meat quality. Sixty-eight young Holstein bulls were equally assigned in two experimental groups: the control group (CON, n = 34) and Linseed Group (LS, n = 34). Bulls in the CON group received a basal total mixed ration while LS young bulls were offered the same basal ration supplemented with linseed (5% on dry matter basis) during the final fattening stage. All bulls were subjected to three individual weightings at the beginning, the middle and the end of the trial. The feed offered was recorded daily and feed refusals were weighed for each pen to calculate feed intake. After slaughter, the Longissimus dorsi muscle from each carcass was collected to evaluate meat pH, color, chemical composition, tenderness and fatty acid profile. Analysis of variance was used to evaluate the effect of dietary intervention on performance and examined meat parameters, with significance set at p < 0.05, using SPSS software (version 29.0). Average daily gain, dry matter intake and feed conversion ratio were not affected by the dietary intervention (p > 0.05). Similarly, carcass yield and dressing percentage remained unaffected (p > 0.05). Adding extruded linseed did not result in differences in meat quality traits (p > 0.05), except for meat pH, which was significantly decreased in the LS group (p < 0.05), indicating more efficient post-mortem glycolysis. Finally, the inclusion of extruded linseed resulted in higher levels of α-linolenic acid in the meat (p < 0.05). These results suggest that including 5% extruded linseed (on a DM basis) in the diet of young Holstein bulls increased meat n-3 content, improved beef pH and maintained production performance. Factors Associated with Clinically Important Changes in Quality of Life of Heart Failure Patients: The QUALIFIER Prospective Cohort Study

Background/Objectives: We aimed to identify the factors associated with clinically important changes in quality of life (QoL) of real-world heart failure (HF) patients. Methods: This is a single-centre, prospective cohort study including 419 patients at an HF clinic between January 2013 and February 2020. QoL was assessed regularly using Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). We used five nested linear mixed-effects models to account for QoL measurements between patients and within-patient. Models were adjusted for time, sociodemographic factors, comorbidities, self-care adherence, and HF severity factors. Results: Median age was 78 years, 54.4% of patients were female, and 49.6% had left ventricle ejection fraction ≥ 50%. At baseline, 62.5% of patients were New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II. Median N-terminal-pro-B type natriuretic peptide level was 1454 pg/mL. Mean MLHFQ total score at baseline was 25 points (95%CI: 22.97–27.60). Having an implanted cardiac resynchronization therapy-pacemaker (CRT-P) was associated with moderate to large improvement in QoL (−13.55 points, 95%CI: −22.45–−4.65). NYHA class II and estimated glomerular filtration rate < 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 were associated with small to moderate QoL deterioration (9.74 points, 95%CI: 6.74–12.75 and 5.82 points, 95%CI: 1.17–10.47, respectively). NYHA classes III or IV and a recent HF hospitalization were associated with large to very large QoL deterioration (28.39 points, 95%CI: 23.82–32.96; 60.59 points, 95%CI: 34.46–86.72; and 26.91 points, 95%CI: 21.80–32.03, respectively). Conclusions: CRT-P implantation, NYHA class and HF hospitalization are associated with the most clinically important QoL changes. Full article

Background: The Kidney Disease and Quality of Life Short Form (KDQOL-SF™ 1.3) is widely used to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with end-stage renal disease. However, no prior validation had been conducted in Kazakhstan, where both Kazakh and Russian are commonly spoken. This study aimed to validate the Kazakh and Russian versions of the KDQOL-SF™ 1.3 and to identify predictors of HRQoL among hemodialysis patients in Kazakhstan. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 217 adult hemodialysis patients from February to April 2025 using a mixed-methods approach (in-person interviews and online data collection). Psychometric testing included Cronbach’s alpha, floor and ceiling effect analysis, and Pearson correlations with self-rated overall health. Multiple linear regression was used to identify predictors of the Kidney Disease Component Summary (KDCS), Physical Component Summary (PCS), and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores. Results: Both language versions demonstrated acceptable to excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.692–0.939). Most subscales were significantly correlated with self-rated health, supporting construct validity. Regression analyses revealed that greater satisfaction with care, better economic well-being, and more positive dialysis experiences were significant predictors of higher KDCS and MCS scores. Lower PCS scores were associated with female gender, comorbidities, and financial burden. Importantly, financial hardship and access challenges emerged as strong negative influences on HRQoL, underscoring the role of socioeconomic and care-related factors in patient well-being. Conclusions: The KDQOL-SF™ 1.3 is a valid and reliable tool for assessing quality of life among Kazakh- and Russian-speaking hemodialysis patients in Kazakhstan. Integrating this instrument into routine clinical practice may facilitate more personalized, patient-centered care and help monitor outcomes beyond traditional clinical indicators. Addressing economic and access-related barriers has the potential to significantly improve both physical and mental health outcomes in this vulnerable population. Full article

Heart rate variability (HRV), particularly the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), is widely used as a non-invasive indicator of autonomic nervous system activity and physiological recovery. This study examined whether daily short-term HRV, measured under standardised morning conditions, was associated with self-reported wellness in a non-clinical adult population. Over a 14-day period, 41 participants completed daily five-minute HRV recordings using a Polar H10 chest sensor and the Kubios mobile app, followed by ratings of sleep quality, fatigue, stress, and physical recovery. Bayesian ordinal mixed-effects models revealed that higher RMSSD values were associated with better self-reported sleep (β = 0.510, 95% HDI: 0.239 to 0.779), lower fatigue (β = 0.281, 95% HDI: 0.020 to 0.562), and reduced stress (β = 0.353, 95% HDI: 0.059 to 0.606), even after adjusting for covariates. No association was found between RMSSD and perceived muscle soreness. These findings support the interpretability of RMSSD as a physiological marker of daily recovery and stress in real-world settings. While the effect sizes were modest and individual variability remained substantial, results suggest that consistent HRV monitoring may offer meaningful insight into subjective wellness—particularly when contextualised and tracked over time. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an extraordinary gas insulation medium, must be replaced by environmentally friendly gas in electric equipment because of its high global warming potential (GWP). In this research work, the DC breakdown properties of R404a gas and its mixtures with N2 and CO2 are studied under a sphere–sphere electrode configuration and uniform field conditions. The GWP of R404a is 16% of SF6 and its liquefaction temperature is also in the suitable range for practical applications. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide are mixed with R404a to reduce its boiling point and GWP. Other important parameters such as the self-recoverability, liquefaction temperature, GWP, and synergistic effect of R404a/CO2 and R404a/N2 were also studied to complement the insulation performance and the results are comparable to other gas mixtures. As a result, it was found that both the mixtures containing 80% R404a and 20% N2 or 20% CO2 possess a breakdown strength of 0.83 times that of SF6. Mixtures containing an 80% concentration of R404a possess a GWP equal to only 15% of SF6. These properties make gaseous mixtures containing 80% R404a and 20% N2 or CO2 a suitable alternative to SF6 in medium-voltage gas-insulated equipment. Full article

Special vehicle detection in intelligent surveillance, emergency rescue, and reconnaissance faces significant challenges in accuracy and robustness under complex environments, necessitating advanced detection algorithms for critical applications. This paper proposes HSF-DETR (Hypergraph Spatial Feature DETR), integrating four innovative modules: a Cascaded Spatial Feature Network (CSFNet) backbone with Cross-Efficient Convolutional Gating (CECG) for enhanced long-range detection through hybrid state-space modeling; a Hypergraph-Enhanced Spatial Feature Modulation (HyperSFM) network utilizing hypergraph structures for high-order feature correlations and adaptive multi-scale fusion; a Dual-Domain Feature Encoder (DDFE) combining Bipolar Efficient Attention (BEA) and Frequency-Enhanced Feed-Forward Network (FEFFN) for precise feature weight allocation; and a Spatial-Channel Fusion Upsampling Block (SCFUB) improving feature fidelity through depth-wise separable convolution and channel shift mixing. Experiments conducted on a self-built special vehicle dataset containing 2388 images demonstrate that HSF-DETR achieves mAP50 and mAP50-95 of 96.6% and 70.6%, respectively, representing improvements of 3.1% and 4.6% over baseline RT-DETR while maintaining computational efficiency at 59.7 GFLOPs and 18.07 M parameters. Cross-domain validation on VisDrone2019 and BDD100K datasets confirms the method’s generalization capability and robustness across diverse scenarios, establishing HSF-DETR as an effective solution for special vehicle detection in complex environments. Background: Caregivers of children often encounter barriers when accessing pediatric healthcare services. These challenges highlight the need for digital innovations to improve accessibility and efficiency in pediatric outpatient care. Objectives: This study aimed to design, implement, and pilot evaluate the Smart Well Child Center application in conjunction with enhancements to the Pediatric Outpatient Department. Methods: This study employs a mixed-methods research approach. The application was developed following the system development life cycle (SDLC) process, and its performance was subsequently evaluated. Additionally, its effectiveness in real-world settings was assessed through a satisfaction survey completed by 85 child caregivers. The results were summarized using the mean and standard deviation, and satisfaction levels were compared using paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The findings reveal that caregivers face significant challenges, including financial burdens related to travel, prolonged wait times, and difficulties accessing healthcare services. In response, the application was designed to incorporate key functionalities. Within the pre-consultation self-assessment module, caregivers can complete evaluations and receive recommendations directly through the application. Furthermore, the service procedure flowchart was restructured to seamlessly integrate these digital innovations, thereby enhancing the overall healthcare experience. The evaluation results indicate that the application achieved high performance ratings across all assessed dimensions (4.06 ± 0.77). Additionally, caregivers reported a substantial increase in satisfaction levels both immediately after implementation (4.58 ± 0.57) and one month afterward (4.59 ± 0.33). Conclusions: Given these findings, it is recommended that the hospital fully adopt the Smart Well Child Center application to improve healthcare accessibility and reduce patient wait times. Future research should assess the long-term impact of the intervention on both caregiver outcomes and healthcare professional workflow, satisfaction, and system usability, to inform broader implementation strategies. Objective: This study aims to investigate the feasibility of an online music therapy protocol for individuals previously diagnosed with COVID-19, focusing on their perceptions of their respiratory symptoms and the intervention’s impact on psychosocial measures. Methods: A within-subject experimental design was applied to examine an eight-week weekly online music therapy protocol, including singing, wind instrument playing, and music visualizations. All self-report data were collected bi-weekly throughout the 16-weeks study period, including baseline and post-tests. The measures for respiratory symptoms included the Medical Research Council’s Dyspnea Scale (MRC Dyspnea), Chronic Respiratory Questionnaire-Mastery Scores (CRQ Mastery), and Visual Analogue Scale for breathlessness. The measures for the secondary psychosocial outcomes were the Beck Depression Inventory-Short Form, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Fatigue Severity Scale, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level, and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Results: Twenty-four participants were enrolled. The participants perceived a reduction in respiratory symptoms, and shortness of breath (MRC Dyspnea). Planned comparisons showed significant decreases in MRC from baseline to post-treatment (p = 0.008). The mixed-effects model, including pre-baseline and post-treatment, was significant (p < 0.001). Significant changes in Breathing VAS were consistent with improvements in MRC Dyspnea, showing a significant baseline-to-post difference (p = 0.01). The CRQ Mastery showed significant improvements from baseline to Week 12 (p < 0.001). No significant changes were observed in other secondary measures. Conclusions: Our preliminary findings suggest that this protocol is feasible, and as a result, may help individuals previously diagnosed with COVID-19 to cope with lasting respiratory symptoms and improve their perception of shortness of breath. Live music-making, including playing accessible wind instruments and singing, may contribute to an increase sense of control over breathing. As this was a feasibility study, we conducted multiple uncorrected statistical comparisons to explore potential effects. While this approach may increase the risk of Type I error, the findings are intended to inform hypotheses for future confirmatory studies rather than to draw definitive conclusions. Full article

This paper reviews the applications and performance advantages of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), engineered cementitious composite (ECC), and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) in composite flexural members. UHPC is characterized by its ultra-high strength, high toughness, excellent durability, and microcrack self-healing capability, albeit with high costs and complex production processes. ECC demonstrates superior tensile, flexural, and compressive strength and durability, yet it exhibits a lower elastic modulus and greater drying shrinkage strain. RAC, as an eco-friendly concrete, offers cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits, although it poses certain performance challenges. The focus of this review is on how to enhance the load-bearing capacity of composite beams or slabs by modifying the interface roughness, adjusting the thickness of the ECC or UHPC layer, and altering the cross-sectional form. The integration of diverse concrete materials improves the performance of beam and slab elements while managing costs. For instance, increasing the thickness of the UHPC or ECC layer typically enhances the load-bearing capacity of composite beams or plates by approximately 10% to 40%. Increasing the roughness of the interface can significantly improve the interfacial bond strength and further augment the ultimate load-bearing capacity of composite components. Moreover, the optimized design of material mix proportions and cross-sectional shapes can also contribute to enhancing the load-bearing capacity, crack resistance, and ductility of composite components. Nevertheless, challenges persist in engineering applications, such as the scarcity of long-term monitoring data on durability, fatigue performance, and creep effects. Additionally, existing design codes inadequately address the nonlinear behavior of multi-material composite structures, necessitating further refinement of design theories. Full article

Background: Marker-based motion capture is the current gold standard for three-dimensional (3D) gait analysis. This is a highly technical analysis that is time-consuming, and marker application can trigger anxiety in children. One potential solution is to use markerless camera systems instead. The objective of this study was to compare 3D lower limb gait kinematics in children using both marker-based and markerless motion capture methods. Methods: Ten typically developing children (age 6–13 yrs) completed five barefoot walks at a self-selected speed. A 10-camera marker-based system (Oqus, Qualisys) and a 7-camera markerless system (Miqus, Qualisys) captured synchronised gait data at 85 Hz. Generalised Additive Mixed Models were fitted to the data to identify the random effects of measurement systems, age, and time across the gait cycle. The root-mean-square difference (RMSD) was used to compare the differences between systems. Results: Significant interactions and differences were observed between the marker-based and markerless systems for most joint angles and planes of motion, particularly with regard to time and age. Conclusions: Despite differences across all kinematic profiles, the RMSD in this study was comparable to previously published results. Alternative model definitions and kinematic crosstalk in both systems likely explain the differences. Age differences were not consistent across joint levels, suggesting a larger sample size is required to determine how maturation may affect markerless tracking. Further investigation is required to understand the deviations and differences between systems before implementing markerless technology in a clinical setting. Full article

Background: Emotional dysregulation (ED) is a transdiagnostic feature of multiple adolescent psychiatric disorders and a predictor of functional impairment and self-harming behaviors. Despite its clinical relevance, pharmacological treatments targeting ED in youth remain underexplored. This retrospective study investigated the clinical effectiveness and tolerability of adjunctive lithium therapy in adolescents with severe ED, independent of specific diagnostic categories. Methods: A total of 35 inpatients (13–17 years) with significant ED were divided into two groups based on pharmacological treatment: lithium add-on therapy (Li group, n = 17) and standard therapy without lithium (Control group, n = 18). Clinical severity (CGI-S) and global functioning (C-GAS) were assessed at baseline (T0), 6 months (T1), and 12 months (T2). A mixed-design ANOVA was performed to assess group × time interactions. Adverse events and treatment adherence were also examined. Results: At T1, the Li group showed a significantly greater reduction in symptom severity (CGI-S) compared to the Control group (p = 0.029). Global functioning (C-GAS) improved over time in both groups (p < 0.001), with no significant interaction effects. Adverse effects, primarily metabolic and endocrine, were more frequent in the Li group but did not reduce adherence. Conclusions: Adjunctive lithium therapy may reduce symptom severity in adolescents with severe ED without negatively affecting treatment tolerability or adherence. These findings support the potential utility of lithium in complex adolescent cases and warrant further prospective research. Full article

Background/Objectives: Effective diabetes self-management is critical for glycemic management and well-being, yet Latino youth face unique cultural and socioeconomic barriers that are insufficiently explored in the literature. This review mapped existing evidence on diabetes self-management for Latino youth. Methods: Searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, SCOPUS, Web of Science, LILACS, ERIC, and The Cochrane Library, using the gray literature and reference lists, in September 2024, following JBI guidelines. The included studies were qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods studies and reviews on diabetes self-management for Latinos aged 0–30 with type 1 or 2 diabetes. Studies including participants over 30 or with gestational diabetes were excluded. Two reviewers independently extracted data using a standardized table and analyzed findings using the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists framework (ADCES7) for self-care behaviors: healthy eating, being active, monitoring, taking medication, problem-solving, reducing risks, and healthy coping. Results: Forty-five studies (forty from the United States) were included from 860 citations. The findings highlighted challenges in adopting diabetes-friendly diets, including cultural preferences, food insecurity, and limited resources. Physical activity improved glycemic control but was hindered by family and school obligations. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) enhanced outcomes, though economic barriers limited access. Family-centered education improved medication adherence, while family support strengthened problem-solving. CGMs and insulin pumps reduced complications, and culturally adapted psychological support enhanced emotional well-being and glycemic management. Conclusions: This review underscores persistent disparities in diabetes self-management among Latino youth. While the study designs and settings were heterogeneous, the findings highlight the need for culturally tailored, family-centered interventions that address structural barriers and psychosocial needs to improve care. Unlike previous studies focusing on two-layer structures or single-parameter effects, this work systematically investigates the influence of sheet layer combination modes on the mechanical properties of three-layer AA6063-T6 self-piercing riveting (SPR) joints through a combination of experimental testing and numerical simulation. Shear and cross-tensile tests were conducted on three-layer AA6063-T6 SPR joints with three distinct sheet layer combinations: T1 (top/middle: 100 × 40 mm2, bottom: 40 × 40 mm2), T2 (top/bottom: 100 × 40 mm2, middle: 40 × 40 mm2), and T3 (middle/bottom: 100 × 40 mm2, top: 40 × 40 mm2). Experimental results reveal significant differences in joint strength and failure modes across the three combinations. T3 joints exhibited the highest shear strength (9.16 kN) but the lowest cross-tensile strength (3.56 kN), whereas T1 joints showed the highest cross-tensile strength (4.97 kN) but moderate shear strength (8.76 kN). A high-fidelity finite element model was developed to simulate the SPR joint under varying sheet layer combinations, incorporating precise geometric details (0.25 mm mesh at critical zones) and advanced contact algorithms (friction coefficient μ = 0.2). Numerical simulations revealed the stress distribution and failure mechanisms under shear and cross-tensile loading, aligning well with experimental observations. Analysis highlights that the mechanical performance of the joint is governed by two key factors: (1) the stress redistribution in sheet layers due to combination mode variations, and (2) the interlocking strength between the rivet and sheets. These findings provide practical guidelines for optimizing sheet layer combinations in lightweight automotive structures subjected to mixed loading conditions. Full article

In view of the bottleneck problems of serious spectral peak cross-interference, redundant data dimensions, and inefficient traditional dimensionality reduction methods in the infrared spectral analysis of mixed gases, this paper studies a joint dimensionality reduction strategy combining stacked self encoder (SAE) and partial least squares (PLS) and constructs an XGBoost regression model for quantitative detection. The experimental data are from the real infrared spectrum dataset of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) database, covering key industrial gases such as CO, CH4, etc. Compared with the traditional principal component analysis (PCA), which relies on the variance contribution rate and leads to dimensional redundancy, and the calculation efficiency of dimension parameters that need to be cross-verified for PLS dimension reduction alone, the SAE-PLS joint strategy has two advantages: first, the optimal dimension reduction is automatically determined by SAE’s nonlinear compression mechanism, which effectively overcomes the limitations of linear methods in spectral nonlinear feature extraction; and second, the feature selection is carried out by combining the variable importance projection index of PLS. Compared with SAE, the compression efficiency is significantly improved. The XGBoost model was selected because of its adaptability to high-dimensional sparse data. Its regularization term and feature importance weighting mechanism can suppress the interference of spectral noise. The experimental results show that the mean square error (MSE) on the test set is reduced to 0.012% (71.4% lower than that of random forest), and the correlation coefficient (R2) is 0.987. By integrating deep feature optimization and ensemble learning, this method provides a new solution with high efficiency and high precision for industrial process gas monitoring. Full article

This study is titled “Success Factors in Transport Interventions: A Mixed-Method Systematic Review (1990–2022)”. The purpose of the systematic review is to (1) identify effective interventions for transitioning individuals from private car reliance to sustainable transport, (2) summarise psychosocial theories shaping transportation choices and identify enablers and barriers influencing sustainable mode adoption, and (3) determine the success factors for interventions promoting sustainable transport choices. The last search was conducted on 18 November 2022. Five databases (Scopus, Web of Science, MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, and ProQuest) were searched using customised Boolean search strings. The identified papers were included or excluded based on the following criteria: (a) reported a modal shift from car users or cars to less CO2-emitting modes of transport, (b) covered the adoption of low-carbon transport alternatives, (c) comprised interventions to promote sustainable transport, (d) assessed or measured the effectiveness of interventions, or (e) proposed behavioural models related to mode choice and/or psychosocial barriers or drivers for car/no-car use. The identified papers eligible for inclusion were critically appraised using Sirriyeh’s Quality Assessment Tool for Studies with Diverse Designs. Inter-rater reliability was assessed using Cohen’s Kappa to evaluate the risk of bias throughout the review process, and low-quality studies identified by the quality assessment were excluded to prevent sample bias. Qualitative data were extracted in a contextually relevant manner, preserving context and meaning to avoid the author’s bias of misinterpretation. Data were extracted using a form derived from the Joanna Briggs Institute. Data transformation and synthesis followed the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institution for mixed-method systematic reviews using a convergent integrated approach. Of the 7999 studies, 4 qualitative, 2 mixed-method, and 30 quantitative studies successfully passed all three screening cycles and were included in the review. Many of these studies focused on modelling individuals’ mode choice decisions from a psychological perspective. In contrast, case studies explored various transport interventions to enhance sustainability in densely populated areas. Nevertheless, the current systematic reviews do not show how individuals’ inner dispositions, such as acceptance, intention, or attitude, have evolved from before to after the implementation of schemes. Of the 11 integrated findings, 9 concerned enablers and barriers to an individual’s sustainable mode choice behaviour. In addition, two integrated findings emerged based on the effectiveness of the interventions. Although numerous interventions target public acceptance of sustainable transport, this systematic review reveals a critical knowledge gap regarding their longitudinal impact on individuals and effectiveness in influencing behavioural change. However, the study may be affected by language bias as it only included peer-reviewed articles published in English. Due to methodological heterogeneity across the studies, a meta-analysis was not feasible. Further high-quality research is needed to strengthen the evidence. This systematic review is self-funded and has been registered on the International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols (INPLASY; Registration Number INPLASY202420011).
