Nowadays, biowaste valorization is a key point in the circular economy. Digestate and compost from organic waste treatment can be used as nutrient-rich fertilizers. In Europe, the use of biowaste-derived fertilizers is promoted by the European Fertilizer Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, which requires verification of their biological stability through regulated indices; however, it is not clear whether the proposed indices and threshold values indicate the same level of stability and what correlations there are between them. This study compared four biological stability indices, namely Oxygen Uptake Rate (OUR), Self-Heating (SH), Residual Biogas Potential (RBP), and Dynamic Respirometric Index (DRI), which were tested on 50 samples of compost and digestate. Overall, the results revealed that most of the compost and digestate samples were quite far from European standards. On the contrary, the RBP test seemed to be less stringent than the other indices, since a much larger number of samples was closer to or in compliance with the established threshold. Data analysis using Pearson’s coefficients showed a strong linear correlation between the indices. Nevertheless, the linear regression predictive model based on experimental data demonstrated that the indices could not represent the same level of stability, providing poor consistency and variability in the predicted values and established threshold. In particular, the DRI test appeared to be more severe than the other aerobic indices. This work could provide valuable support in improving evaluation criteria and promoting a sustainable use of compost and digestate as organic fertilizers from a circular economy perspective. Quality of Life as a Predictor of Successful Aging in Urban and Rural Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study in Eastern Croatia–Slavonia

Background: Population aging has increased attention on the quality of life and successful aging of older adults. Objective: To examine urban–rural differences in subjective quality of life and self-rated successful aging, explore associations with psychosocial factors, and identify predictors of successful aging, including potential moderating effects of place of residence and chronic illness. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 403 adults aged ≥ 60 years in Eastern Croatia. Measures included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Self-assessment of Successful Aging Scale (SSAS), and the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI). Data were analyzed using nonparametric tests (Mann–Whitney U, Spearman’s correlation), linear regression, and moderation analyses. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Ethical approval was obtained (Class: 602-01/24-12/02; IRB: 2158/97-97-10-24-36). Results: Rural participants reported lower PWI scores (p = 0.005) and self-rated successful aging (p < 0.001) than urban participants. Active community involvement was positively associated with quality of life (Rho = 0.46; p < 0.001), whereas regret about missed opportunities and past actions was negatively associated (Rho = −0.20; p < 0.01). Regression analyses explained 48.3% of the variance in SSAS, with higher PWI scores being strongly associated with higher SSAS scores, and rural residence and chronic illness being associated with lower SSAS scores. Moderation analyses indicated that the association between PWI and SSAS was consistent across different environmental contexts and in the presence of illness. Conclusions: Older adults living in rural areas reported lower quality of life and self-rated successful aging compared with those in urban and suburban areas, with subjective wellbeing emerging as a key predictor. Promoting social engagement and addressing psychosocial barriers may enhance successful aging, particularly in rural populations. Findings suggest that social engagement and psychosocial support are associated with higher level of perceived successful aging, indicating potential areas for future community-based or healthcare interventions. Workplace weight stigma is a form of discrimination affecting equality, health, and careers, yet occupational research remains fragmented. This gender-sensitive systematic review synthesizes evidence on workplace weight stigma among adult workers and job applicants since 2000. Following PRISMA procedures, we searched psychological, medical, sociological, and economic databases, identifying 25 included studies examining work outcomes. The corpus includes experimental vignette and correspondence studies, surveys, and qualitative designs, predominantly from high-income Western countries. Higher body weight is consistently associated with disadvantages across the employment life cycle: reduced callbacks and hiring, lower wages and wage growth, fewer promotions, and negative performance evaluations. Penalties are systematically stronger for women; intersectional analyses remain rare. Weight-based teasing, unfair treatment, and stereotype threat are linked to poorer self-rated health, psychological distress, burnout, reduced work ability, lower job satisfaction and commitment, and stronger turnover intentions. Organizational-level evidence is indirect but suggests detrimental effects on engagement and citizenship behaviors. Findings support conceptualizing workplace weight stigma as both a psychosocial hazard and a structural driver of labor-market inequality, underscoring the need for size-inclusive HR practices, leadership, and occupational risk-prevention policies. Wolbachia is an endosymbiotic bacterium widespread in invertebrates that causes various reproductive effects, including cytoplasmic incompatibility, feminization, male killing, and the induction of parthenogenesis (PI). PI-Wolbachia wRem converts Telenomus remus, an egg parasitoid of Spodoptera frugiperda, from arrhenotokous reproduction (male-producing) to thelytokous reproduction (female-producing). Long-term symbiosis between egg parasitoids and Wolbachia has been shown to lead to reproductive barriers and “female functional virginity,” causing progressive and potentially irreversible sex ratio imbalances. However, whether such reproductive barriers occur in T. remus remains unknown, which has important implications for biological control programs utilizing this parasitoid. To address this question, we cured wRem using tetracycline and conducted crossing experiments with naturally uninfected strains (W-). The results indicated that the cured strain (Wcure) retained normal sexual reproductive capability, with self-crossing fertilization rates comparable to those of W- strains. However, first-generation hybridization between Wcure and W- strains produced strongly male-biased offspring (male proportion: 94.3% and 85.8% for W-♂ × Wcure♀ and Wcure♂ × W-♀, respectively), indicating substantial reproductive incompatibility. Notably, an asymmetric pattern was observed between reciprocal crosses. In second-generation hybridization experiments, hybrid females (W-/Wcure) mated with W- or Wcure males showed markedly recovered sex ratios (male proportion: 14.3% and 15.6%, respectively), although total offspring numbers remained lower than in self-crossing groups. These results suggest that the reproductive incompatibility in T. remus differs from female functional virginity and is more consistent with mitonuclear incompatibility arising from population divergence. The partial recovery in second-generation hybrids indicates that surviving F1 hybrid females likely represent individuals selected for compatibility, rather than exhibiting progressive deterioration of sexual function. These findings offer insights into Wolbachia’s impact on parasitoid reproduction and highlight key considerations for biological control applications, underscoring the importance of evaluating reproductive barriers before deploying cured strains and preventing symbiont loss within populations. Decisions made by pilots and drivers suffering from depression can endanger the lives of hundreds of people, as demonstrated by the tragedies of Germanwings flight 9525 and Air India flight 171. Since the detection of depression is currently based largely on subjective self-reporting, there is an urgent need for fast, objective, and reliable detection methods. In our study, we present an artificial intelligence-based system that combines iris-based identification with the analysis of pupillometric and eye movement biomarkers, enabling the real-time detection of physiological signs of depression before driving or flying. The two-module model was evaluated based on data from 242 participants: the iris identification module operated with an Equal Error Rate of less than 0.5%, while the depression-detecting CNN-LSTM network achieved 89% accuracy and an AUC value of 0.94. Compared to the neutral state, depressed individuals responded to negative news with significantly greater pupil dilation (+27.9% vs. +18.4%), while showing a reduced or minimal response to positive stimuli (−1.3% vs. +6.2%). This was complemented by slower saccadic movement and longer fixation time, which is consistent with the cognitive distortions characteristic of depression. Our results indicate that pupillometric deviations relative to individual baselines can be reliably detected and used with high accuracy for depression screening. The presented system offers a preventive safety solution that could reduce the number of accidents caused by human error related to depression in road and air traffic in the future. Full article

Background: Upper limb loss has a profound impact on individuals’ daily activities, self-image, and social interactions. Despite continuous technological advances in upper-limb prosthetics, high rates of device abandonment persist, highlighting the need to better understand users’ functional and psychosocial needs. Methods: To gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives of upper limb amputees and the synthesis of their needs across ergonomic, functional, and psychological dimensions, this study was conducted. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines to synthesize user-reported evidence on upper-limb prosthesis use. Articles indexed in the Web of Science database between 2016 and December 2023 were screened using predefined search terms related to upper-limb amputation, prostheses, social impact, and user needs. Studies were included if they reported direct perspectives of upper-limb prosthesis users regarding usability, functionality, and lived experience. Results: Out of 239 papers identified, 31 were included and analyzed. The findings reveal that functional performance, comfort, weight, intuitive control, and reliability are strongly interconnected with psychosocial factors such as confidence, embodiment, social participation, and acceptance. Technological advances have not consistently translated into improved alignment between prosthetic solutions and user needs, which is reflected in continued dissatisfaction and abandonment. Conclusions: This review provides a structured synthesis of user-reported needs across functional, ergonomic, and psychosocial dimensions, translating these insights into design-relevant guidelines. Emphasizing a user-centered and interdisciplinary perspective, the findings aim to support the development of upper-limb prosthetic devices that are more usable, acceptable, and aligned with users’ expectations, ultimately bridging the gap between user expectations and technological capabilities and promoting long-term adoption and quality of life. Plesiomonas shigelloides, an aquatic Gram-negative bacillus often associated with self-limiting gastroenteritis, has been reported worldwide. However, to date, no reviews have specifically investigated P. shigelloides bacteremia, which is rare and potentially fatal. This scoping review aimed to examine the existing literature to identify the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, antimicrobial susceptibility, and outcomes of P. shigelloides bacteremia. A PRISMA-ScR-guided search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase identified 22 published cases, all reported as single-patient case reports. Cases were globally distributed, with the majority reported from the Americas and Europe. The median patient age was 46 years. The case fatality rate was 27.3% (n = 6/22). Most patients had identifiable host risk factors, particularly hematological disorders, neonatal status, or immunocompromised status, and environmental exposure such as raw seafood consumption or contact with freshwater. Clinical presentations were heterogeneous, commonly including fever and sepsis or septic shock. Microbiologically, P. shigelloides demonstrated consistent intrinsic resistance to ampicillin while retaining susceptibility to multiple antimicrobial classes. Poor outcomes were more closely associated with host factors and delayed presentation than with antimicrobial resistance. Early diagnosis, targeted therapy, and antimicrobial stewardship are essential for optimizing outcomes in this rare but severe infection. Full article

The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Federated Learning (FL) enables distributed model training while preserving data privacy. To overcome the challenges caused by centralized and synchronous model updates, we integrate Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) blockchain-based FL into UAV networks. In this decentralized and asynchronous framework, UAVs can independently and autonomously participate in the FL process according to their own requirement. To achieve the high FL performance, it is essential for UAVs to actively contribute their computational and data resources to the FL process. However, it is challenging to ensure that UAVs consistently contribute their resources, as they may have a propensity to prioritize their own self-interest. Therefore, it is crucial to design effective incentive mechanisms that encourage UAVs to actively participate in the FL process and contribute their computational and data resources. Currently, research on effective incentive mechanisms for DAG blockchain-based FL framework in UAV networks remains limited. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel incentive mechanism that integrates both rewards and punishments to encourage UAVs to actively contribute to FL and to deter free riding under incomplete information. We formulate the interactions among UAVs as an evolutionary game, and the aspiration-driven rule is employed to imitate the UAV’s decision-making processes. We evaluate the proposed mechanism for UAVs within a DAG blockchain-based FL framework. Experimental results show that the proposed incentive mechanism substantially increases the average UAV contribution rate from 77.04±0.84% (without incentive mechanism) to 97.48±1.29%. Furthermore, the higher contribution rate results in an approximate 2.23% improvement in FL performance. Additionally, we evaluate the impact of different parameter configurations to analyze how they affect the performance and efficiency of the FL system. Full article

Automatically generated chains-of-thought (gCoTs) have become common as large language models adopt deliberative behaviors. Prior work emphasizes fidelity to internal processes, leaving explanatory properties underexplored. Our central hypothesis is that these traces, produced by highly capable reasoning models, are not arbitrary by-products of decoding but exhibit stable and practically valuable textual properties beyond answer fidelity. We apply a multidimensional text-evaluation framework that quantifies four axes—structural coherence, logical–factual consistency, linguistic clarity, and coverage/informativeness—that are standard dimensions for assessing textual quality, and use it to evaluate five reasoning models on the GSM8K arithmetic word-problem benchmark (~1.3 k–1.4 k items) with reproducible, normalized metrics. Logical verification shows near-ceiling self-consistency, measured by the Aggregate Consistency Score (ACS ≈ 0.95–1.00), and high final-answer entailment, measured by Final Answer Soundness (FAS0 ≈ 0.85–1.00); when sound, justifications are compact, with Justification Set Size (JSS ≈ 0.51–0.57) and moderate redundancy, measured by the Redundant Constraint Ratio (RCR ≈ 0.62–0.70). Results also show consistent coherence and clarity; from gCoT to answer implication is stricter than from question to gCoT support, indicating chains anchored to the prompt. We find no systematic trade-off between clarity and informativeness (within-model slopes ≈ 0). In addition to these automatic and logic-based metrics, we include an exploratory expert rating of a subset (four raters; 50 items × five models) to contextualize model differences; these human judgments are not intended to support dataset-wide generalization. Overall, gCoTs display explanatory value beyond fidelity, primarily supported by the automated and logic-based analyses, motivating hybrid evaluation (automatic + exploratory human) to map convergence/divergence zones for user-facing applications. This study presents a systematic investigation of laser surface hardening of 9CrSi tool steel with the aim of establishing the relationships between processing parameters, microstructural evolution, and resulting mechanical and tribological properties under the applied laser conditions. The influence of laser power, modulation frequency, and scanning speed on the hardened layer depth, microstructure, and surface properties was analyzed. Laser treatment produced a martensitic surface layer with varying fractions of retained austenite, while the transition zone consisted of martensite, granular pearlite, and carbide particles. X-ray diffraction identified the presence of α′-Fe, γ-Fe, and Fe3C phases, with peak broadening associated with increased lattice microstrain induced by rapid self-quenching. The surface microhardness increased from approximately 220 HV0.1 in the untreated state to 950–1000 HV0.1 after laser hardening, with hardened layer thicknesses ranging from about 500 to 750 µm depending on the processing regime. Instrumented indentation showed higher elastic modulus values for all hardened conditions. Tribological tests under dry sliding conditions revealed reduced coefficients of friction and more than an order-of-magnitude decrease in wear rate compared with untreated steel. The results provide a parameter–microstructure–performance map for laser-hardened 9CrSi steel, demonstrating how variations in laser processing conditions affect hardened layer characteristics and functional performance. This study examined whether the Ringelmann and Köhler effects emerge in adolescent rowing by assessing how crew size influences performance, physiological responses and perceived exertion in youth rowers aged 14–17 years. A total of 136 competitive rowers (mean age = 15.79 ± 1.14 years) completed four three-minute maximal-effort trials on a rowing ergometer under four conditions: individual trials, two-person crews, four-person crews and eight-person crews. Objective performance indicators, including stroke rate, heart rate and perceived exertion (Borg scale), were recorded. Repeated-measures ANOVA indicated that objective performance indicators (distance and power output) remained largely stable across conditions and age groups, although some isolated and non-systematic differences with large intra-subject effect sizes emerged in the younger category (14–15 years), particularly in the two-person crew condition. In contrast, the stroke rate differed consistently across crew sizes, with higher values observed in the eight-person crew condition in both age groups. Cardiovascular responses showed minimal and transient variation between conditions. Perceived exertion differed markedly by age, with older rowers (16–17 years) reporting significantly higher effort during individual trials compared with crew-based conditions, without corresponding gains in objective performance. Overall, although crew size influenced the regulation and perception of effort, the findings do not provide support for a consistent expression of either the Ringelmann or Köhler effects in adolescent rowing, as no systematic performance losses or motivational gains among weaker crew members were evident. These results suggest that developmental differences in self-regulation and effort perception may play a more prominent role than crew size alone in shaping performance responses, with practical implications for training design and crew configuration in youth rowing. Wearable sensors generate continuous physiological and behavioral data at a population scale, yet wellness prediction remains limited by noisy measurements, irregular sampling, and subjective outcomes. We introduce HybridSense, a unified framework that integrates raw wearable signals and their statistical descriptors with large language model–based reasoning to produce accurate and interpretable estimates of stress, fatigue, readiness, and sleep quality. Using the PMData dataset, minute-level heart rate and activity logs are transformed into daily statistical features, whose relevance is ranked using a Random Forest model. These features, together with short waveform segments, are embedded into structured prompts and evaluated across seven prompting strategies using three large language model families: OpenAI 4o-mini, Gemini 2.0 Flash, and DeepSeek Chat. Bootstrap analyses demonstrate robust, task-dependent performance. Zero-shot prompting performs best for fatigue and stress, while few-shot prompting improves sleep-quality estimation. HybridSense further enhances readiness prediction by combining high-level descriptors with waveform context, and self-consistency and tree-of-thought prompting stabilize predictions for highly variable targets. All evaluated models exhibit low inference cost and practical latency. These results suggest that prompt-driven large language model reasoning, when paired with interpretable signal features, offers a scalable and transparent approach to wellness prediction from consumer wearable data. Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted rural areas across the United States, including rural North Carolina (NC). Consistent with national patterns, COVID-19 vaccination coverage as of December 2022 was higher for non-rural (72%) than rural (58%) NC counties. The role of trusted sources of vaccine information used by rural and non-rural residents is unknown. Methods: Using data from two surveys distributed by the COVID-19 Community Research Partnership from 8 June 2021 through 21 December 2021, we compared self-reported sources of trusted COVID-19 vaccine information by non-rural and rural counties and by county-level predominant political vote in the 2020 Presidential election. Results: While NC respondents were highly vaccinated (94%), fewer residents from rural counties self-reported COVID-19 vaccination than those from non-rural counties (91% versus 95%). The most common reported source of trusted vaccine information was federal health agencies. The proportion citing a federal health agency was higher for respondents from non-rural (80%) than rural (72%) counties and was higher for vaccinated (75%) than unvaccinated (42%) rural respondents. The next two most trusted sources of vaccine information were state/local health officials (48%) and health care providers (42%). Among trusted resources reported by 10–15% of respondents, those from rural counties were less likely to use hospital websites, employers, or news sources than those from non-rural counties. More respondents from counties with >60% vote for the 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate cited federal health agencies, state and local officials, and new sources than respondents from counties with >60% vote for the 2020 Republican Presidential candidate. Conclusions: By identifying the trusted sources of vaccine information for residents in non-rural and rural NC counties, future vaccine implementation efforts can tailor communication efforts to increase vaccine uptake and potentially reduce the rates of hospitalizations and death from vaccine-preventable diseases such as COVID-19 or other future pandemics. The origin of life embodies two fundamental questions: how and when did life begin? It is commonly conjectured that life began on Earth around 4 billion years ago. This requires that the complex organization of RNA, DNA, triplet codon, protein, and lipid membrane (RDTPM) architecture was easy to establish between the time the Earth cooled enough for liquid water and the time when early microorganisms appeared. These bracketing events create a narrow window of time to construct a completely operational self-replicating organic system of very high complexity. Another conjecture is that life did not begin on Earth but was seeded from life-bearing space objects (e.g., asteroids, comets, space dust), commonly referred to as panspermia. The second conjecture implies that life formed somewhere else and was part of the solar nebula, originating from an earlier generation star where there was more time available for the development of life. In this paper, the goal is to provide a hypothetical perspective related to the timing for the origin of pre-biotic chemistry and life itself. Using a form of complexity growth, biological features spanning from the present day back to early life on Earth were examined for trends across time. Genome sizes, gene number, protein–protein binding sites, energy for cell construction, mass of individual cells, the rate of cell mass growth, and a molecular complexity measure all yield highly significant regressions of linearly increasing complexity when plotted over the last 4 Gyr (billion years). When extrapolated back in time, intersections with simple complexities associated with each variable yield a mean value of 8.6 Gyr before the present time. This era coincides with the peak of star and planet formation in the universe. This speculative analysis is consistent with the second conjecture for the origin of life. The major assumptions of such an analysis are presented and discussed. Full article

Background: Adolescence is a sensitive period for psychological, academic, and social development, and sports participation has been described as a potential protective factor for academic performance and psychological well-being. However, limited research has examined the combined influence of sports involvement, sport type, and family background on adolescents’ academic and psychological outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the associations between organized sport participation, sport type (football vs. judo), psychological well-being, psychosomatic symptoms, academic performance, and family socioeconomic background among adolescent boys. Methods: The sample consisted of 52 boys aged 11–14 years from a rural school, divided into football players (n = 13), judo athletes (n = 13), non-athletes (n = 13), and a contextual subgroup of students with special educational needs (SEN; n = 13), with the latter included for exploratory purposes only. Data included school-record-based academic performance and validated self-report measures of life satisfaction, depressive symptoms, psychosomatic complaints, perceived physical fitness, and socioeconomic background. Results: Athletes demonstrated significantly higher academic achievement than non-athletes in overall grade point average (p < 0.001), mathematics (p < 0.001), Romanian (p < 0.001), English (p = 0.03), and Hungarian (p < 0.001). They also reported higher life satisfaction (p < 0.001) but simultaneously showed slightly elevated depressive symptom scores (p < 0.001), indicating a paradoxical pattern of concurrent psychosocial benefits and psychological strain. Parental education (p < 0.001), parental occupational status (p = 0.01), and fathers’ occupational position (p = 0.02) were significantly higher among athletes’ families. Perceived physical fitness was also rated higher by athletes (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found in body mass index, family structure, or most psychosomatic symptoms. Conclusions: Sport participation was associated with more favorable academic and psychological indicators, yet also with elevated depressive symptoms, highlighting the dual nature of organized sport during adolescence. Future research should apply longitudinal designs, include female participants, and incorporate objective indicators of training load. Full article
