The paradigm-shift idea of murburn concept is no hypothesis but developed directly from fundamental facts of cellular/ecological existence. Murburn involves spontaneous and stochastic interactions (mediated by murzymes) amongst the molecules and unbound ions of cells. It leads to effective charge separation (ECS) and formation/recruitment of diffusible reactive species (DRS, like radicals whose reactions enable ATP-synthesis and thermogenesis) and emission of radiations (UV/Vis to ELF). These processes also lead to a chemo-electromagnetic matrix (CEM), ascertaining that living cell/organism react/function as a coherent unit. Murburn concept propounds the true utility of oxygen: generating DRS (with catalytic and electrical properties) on the way to becoming water, the life solvent, and ultimately also leading to phase-based macroscopic homeostatic outcomes. Such a layout enables cells to become simple chemical engines (SCEs) with powering, coherence, homeostasis, electro-mechanical and sensing–response (PCHEMS; life’s short-term “intelligence”) abilities. In the current review, we discuss the coacervate nature of cells and dwell upon the ways and contexts in which various radiations (either incident or endogenously generated) could interact in the new scheme of cellular function. Presenting comparative evidence/arguments and listing of systems with murburn models, we argue that the new perceptions explain life processes better and urge the community to urgently adopt murburn bioenergetics and adapt to its views. Further, we touch upon some distinct scientific and sociological contexts with respect to the outreach of murburn concept. It is envisaged that greater awareness of murburn could enhance the longevity and quality of life and afford better approaches to therapies. Full article

Based on a comprehensive review of the current research status of ecological compensation both domestically and internationally, combined with field survey data, this study delves into the issue of multi-stakeholder participation in the ecological compensation mechanisms of the Xin’an River Basin. This research reveals that the joint participation of multiple stakeholders is crucial to achieving the goals of ecological compensation in river basins. The government plays a significant role in macro-guidance, financial support, policy guarantees, supervision, and management. It promotes the comprehensive implementation of ecological environmental protection by formulating relevant laws and regulations, guiding the public to participate in ecological conservation, and supervising and punishing pollution behaviors. The public, serving as the main force, forms strong awareness and behavioral habits of ecological protection through active participation in environmental protection, monitoring, and feedback. As participants, enterprises contribute to industrial transformation and green development by improving resource utilization efficiency, reducing pollution emissions, promoting green industries, and participating in ecological restoration projects. Scientific research institutions, as technology enablers, have effectively enhanced governance efficiency through technological research and innovation, ecosystem value accounting to provide decision-making support, and public education. Social organizations, as facilitators, have injected vitality and innovation into watershed governance by extensively mobilizing social forces and building multi-party collaboration platforms. Communities, as supporters, have transformed ecological value into economic benefits by developing characteristic industries such as eco-agriculture and eco-tourism. Based on the above findings, further recommendations are proposed to mobilize the enthusiasm of upstream communities and encourage their participation in ecological compensation, promote the market-oriented operation of ecological compensation mechanisms, strengthen cross-regional cooperation to establish joint mechanisms, enhance supervision and evaluation, and establish a sound benefit-sharing mechanism. These recommendations provide theoretical support and practical references for ecological compensation worldwide. Full article

The present study focuses on the attractiveness and perceived value of differentiated quality labels, such as the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), for agri-food products from Extremadura (Spain). In doing so, it addresses a gap in the scientific literature concerning consumer behavior toward products bearing these certifications. The results show that awareness of these quality schemes is significantly higher among middle-aged and older individuals, underscoring the need for more modern and targeted communication strategies. The findings highlight the strategic role of agri-food marketing in promoting certified products and emphasize the importance of bridging the generational gap in consumer education. Overall, differentiated quality schemes are perceived as strategic tools to enhance the competitiveness of local products, strengthen cultural identity, and foster sustainable rural economies. Furthermore, this study identifies a negative relationship between the consumption of certified products and the awareness of certification and a positive relationship with the willingness to pay a premium. Consumers with greater awareness tend consume these products less, although they are more willing to pay higher prices for items bearing quality labels. Full article

This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of psychological distress among medical students in Spain, a growing concern given the high prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, and burnout reported across multiple medical schools and universities. To assess the scope and key characteristics of this phenomenon, a thorough literature search was conducted in the PubMed, ProQuest, and Web of Science (WoS) databases. Studies published between 2010 and 2024 in peer-reviewed scientific journals, written in English or Spanish, and specifically focused on medical students enrolled in Spanish universities were considered for inclusion. A total of 14 studies were analysed. The findings indicate that psychological distress often emerges early in medical training and tends to intensify as students progress academically. Female medical students are consistently more affected, as most of the studies reviewed indicate that they exhibit higher levels of depressive symptoms, trait anxiety, and perceived stress. Some research also suggests greater levels of burnout among female students compared to their male peers. Key contributing factors include academic overload and dissatisfaction, sleep deprivation, and the use of maladaptive coping strategies. Although awareness of the issue is increasing, available evidence suggests that institutional responses remain limited, and that only a small number of universities have implemented structured mental health programmes. Overall, the results underscore the urgent need for institutional reforms in Spanish medical education to safeguard students’ mental wellbeing. Key priorities include revising curricula, implementing structured emotional support programmes, and ensuring accessible services—requiring coordinated, long-term commitment across academic, healthcare, and policy sectors. Future research should explore longitudinal trends and the effectiveness of targeted interventions. Full article

Workflow scheduling in cloud computing is attracting increasing attention. Cloud computing can assign tasks to available virtual machine resources in cloud data centers according to scheduling strategies, providing a powerful computing platform for the execution of workflow tasks. However, developing effective workflow scheduling algorithms to find optimal or near-optimal task-to-VM allocation solutions that meet users’ specific QoS requirements still remains an open area of research. In this paper, we propose a hybrid QoS-aware workflow scheduling algorithm named HLWOA to address the problem of simultaneously minimizing the completion time and execution cost of workflow scheduling in cloud computing. First, the workflow scheduling problem in cloud computing is modeled as a multi-objective optimization problem. Then, based on the heterogeneous earliest finish time (HEFT) heuristic optimization algorithm, tasks are reverse topologically sorted and assigned to virtual machines with the earliest finish time to construct an initial workflow task scheduling sequence. Furthermore, an improved Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) based on Lévy flight is proposed. The output solution of HEFT is used as one of the initial population solutions in WOA to accelerate the convergence speed of the algorithm. Subsequently, a Lévy flight search strategy is introduced in the iterative optimization phase to avoid the algorithm falling into local optimal solutions. The proposed HLWOA is evaluated on the WorkflowSim platform using real-world scientific workflows (Cybershake and Montage) with different task scales (100 and 1000). Experimental results demonstrate that HLWOA outperforms HEFT, HEPGA, and standard WOA in both makespan and cost, with normalized fitness values consistently ranking first. Full article

In recent studies, public health has been considered a key stakeholder in climate mitigation and adaptation in cities since they are more exposed to the impact of climate change. Nurses represent a vast majority of public health professionals, playing a key role in health promotion that allows them to influence individuals, families, and communities in adopting healthier behaviours and decarbonized lifestyles. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to map the existing evidence on nursing interventions, which are being led or implemented to reduce the health risks related to climate change in urban areas. The present review follows the JBI methodological framework, including a search on PubMed, MEDLINE complete, CINAHL Complete, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine), and RCAAP. Hand searched references were also considered, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies between January 2014 and October 2024, for a more contemporary perspective. A three-step search strategy and data extraction tool were used by two independent reviewers. Twenty-seven studies in English and Portuguese were eligible for inclusion, all targeting a population of professionals with nursing-related roles: two case studies, one Delphi panel, one descriptive study, one historical research paper, two using a methodological design format, four narrative reviews, one observational study, nine review articles, three scoping reviews, and three systematic reviews. Eight categories of nursing interventions that contribute to decarbonized lifestyles, reducing health risks in relation to climate change, were acknowledged. Nurses play a key role in empowering individuals, families, and communities, promoting climate awareness and literacy, supporting health policy change, advocating for the most vulnerable and engaging in environmental activism, using evidence-based research, and taking advantage of marketing strategies and social media. Toxic Threats from the Fern Pteridium aquilinum: A Multidisciplinary Case Study in Northern Spain

Pteridium aquilinum (bracken fern) poses a global threat to biodiversity and to the health of both animals and humans due to its toxic metabolites and aggressive ecological expansion. In northern Spain, particularly in regions of intensive livestock farming, these risks may be exacerbated, calling for urgent assessment and monitoring strategies. In this study, we implemented a multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the toxicological and ecological relevance of P. aquilinum through four key actions: (a) quantification of pterosins A and B in young fronds (croziers) using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS); (b) analysis of in vivo genotoxicity of aqueous extracts using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism; (c) a large-scale survey of local livestock farmers to assess awareness and perceived impact of bracken; and (d) the development and field application of a drone-based mapping tool to assess the spatial distribution of the species at the regional level. Our results confirm the consistent presence of pterosins A and B in croziers, with concentrations ranging from 0.17 to 2.20 mg/g dry weight for PtrB and 13.39 to 257 µg/g for PtrA. Both metabolite concentrations and genotoxicity levels were found to correlate with latitude and, importantly, with each other. All tested samples exhibited genotoxic activity, with notable differences among them. The farmer survey (n = 212) revealed that only 50% of respondents were aware of the toxic risks posed by bracken, indicating a need for targeted outreach. The drone-assisted mapping approach proved to be a promising tool for identifying bracken-dominated areas and provides a scalable foundation for future ecological monitoring and land management strategies. Altogether, our findings emphasize that P. aquilinum is not merely a local concern but a globally relevant toxic species whose monitoring and control demand coordinated scientific and policy-based efforts. In recent decades, information technology has grown. Computers have become a daily activity, facilitating access to information, faster communication and faster work. If used responsibly, it has many advantages. Objectives: To explore the potential link between prolonged use of computer input devices—such as keyboards and mice—and the development of compressive neuropathies, including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS), in individuals whose daily routines are heavily reliant on computer-based activities. Methods: A comprehensive review of the literature was undertaken to assess the correlation between the use of computer input devices and the incidence of compressive neuropathies in the upper limbs, with particular attention to repetitive strain, ergonomic posture deviations, and personal risk factors. Results: Current evidence indicates a potential association between prolonged computer use and the development of upper limb compressive neuropathies; however, a definitive consensus within the scientific literature remains elusive. Repetitive movements and non-neutral postures appear to be significant contributing factors, particularly among individuals with predisposing risk factors. Despite increasing awareness of this issue, standardized, evidence-based clinical guidelines for the evaluation and management of work-related nerve disorders remain lacking. Conclusions: While the relationship between computer use and compressive neuropathies remains debated, healthcare professionals should be aware of the risks, particularly in individuals exposed to repetitive strain and ergonomic stress. Further research and the development of clinical guidelines are needed to better understand and manage these work-related conditions. Full article

This paper presents an interpretable and modular framework for energy management in smart buildings based on fuzzy logic and the IEEE Std 1855-2016. The proposed system builds upon the JFML-IoT library, enabling the integration and execution of fuzzy rule-based systems on resource-constrained IoT devices using a lightweight and extensible architecture. Unlike conventional data-driven controllers, this approach emphasizes semantic transparency, expert-driven control logic, and compliance with fuzzy markup standards. The system is designed to enhance both operational efficiency and user comfort through transparent and explainable decision-making. A four-layer architecture structures the system into Perception, Communication, Processing, and Application layers, supporting real-time decisions based on environmental data. The fuzzy logic rules are defined collaboratively with domain experts and encoded in Fuzzy Markup Language to ensure interoperability and formalization of expert knowledge. While adherence to IEEE Std 1855-2016 facilitates system integration and standardization, the scientific contribution lies in the deployment of an interpretable, IoT-based control system validated in real conditions. A case study is conducted in a realistic indoor environment, using temperature, humidity, illuminance, occupancy, and CO2 sensors, along with HVAC and lighting actuators. The results demonstrate that the fuzzy inference engine generates context-aware control actions aligned with expert expectations. The proposed framework also opens possibilities for incorporating user-specific preferences and adaptive comfort strategies in future developments. Full article

This study assesses the risk of geoheritage degradation along a low-lying coastal stretch Okin the municipalities of Macau, Guamaré, and Galinhos, located in the central portion of Rio Grande do Norte’s northern coastline, Brazil. Twelve geosites, inventoried based on their scientific value, susceptibility to degradation, and representation of diverse coastal processes and landforms, were numerically assessed for their degradation risk. The methodology comprised 11 sub-criteria grouped into three main criteria: natural vulnerability, anthropogenic vulnerability, and public use. The results indicate that all 12 geosites in the study area are subject to moderate to high degradation risk, with the highest levels observed in those with the most evident signs of human use and intervention. To mitigate these impacts, the implementation of access restrictions or protective measures by local authorities is recommended. Furthermore, raising awareness among local communities about the environmental consequences of their activities and the geosites’ role in promoting sustainability is essential. Given the region’s heightened vulnerability to sea level oscillations, future assessments should incorporate climate change implications into the assessment criteria. Full article

Objective: To systematically review the scientific literature on lysergic acid amide (LSA), focusing on its physical, neurobiological, and social effects, as well as its potential risks and therapeutic uses. Methods: A systematic review was conducted across PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science up to December 2023, using keywords such as “ergine,” “lysergic acid amide,” and “legal high.” Studies were included if they reported original human data on the physical, neurobiological, psychological, or social effects of LSA; seventeen studies were included. Animal studies, in vitro research, and non-original articles were excluded. Two independent reviewers screened and selected the studies, with a third resolving discrepancies. Data were extracted using a standardized form. The review followed PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered on the Open Science Framework. Results: LSA is primarily consumed through preparations made from the seeds of Convolvulaceae plants. Reported effects include euphoria, hallucinations, nausea, and anxiety. Severe adverse outcomes, such as psychosis, hypertension, and hospitalization, have also been documented. Some evidence suggests its potential therapeutic application for cluster headaches. However, variability in dosing and misinformation on digital platforms heighten the risks associated with LSA use. Conclusions: LSA poses significant health risks, exacerbated by online misinformation and variability in its effects, and a lack of scientific studies. Further research is essential to clarify its pharmacological profile, establish guidelines for safe use, and raise public awareness about its dangers. Full article

The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and supporting development through the production of the hormones T4 and T3. These hormones are essential during childhood for nervous system myelination, physical growth, puberty, skeletal and dental maturation, and overall metabolic balance. In early infancy, when the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid axis is still immature, thyroid dysfunction can result in a range of long-term complications. The metabolism and action of thyroid hormones depend not only on iodine but also on other vital micronutrients, particularly selenium (Se). This narrative review aims to comprehensively examine the role of selenium in maintaining thyroid health from fetal life through adolescence. Selenium is a key micronutrient involved in thyroid development, hormone synthesis, antioxidant defense, and immune regulation, especially during pregnancy and childhood. Inadequate selenium levels may contribute to the onset, progression, and clinical management of various thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroid diseases. Although scientific evidence supports selenium’s critical functions in hormone metabolism and antioxidant protection, public awareness and monitoring of selenium intake remain insufficient. Beyond the need for further research, there is an urgent call for integrated public health strategies, ranging from sustainable, food-based approaches to targeted clinical screening and educational programs. Promoting awareness of selenium’s importance and incorporating selenium status into maternal and pediatric care protocols could play a significant role in preventing deficiencies and supporting long-term endocrine and neurodevelopmental health. The number of publications in the scientific literature dealing with geomorphological mapping has increased over the last two decades. Although geomorphological maps are utilised in various contexts, such as hazard assessment, archaeology, and tourism, there is a noticeable lack of interaction between geomorphological products and the social sciences. This study aims to provide a qualitative assessment of the literature on geomorphological maps published in the 2000s with the intent of identifying the purpose of mapping and its field of application. Additionally, a comparative analysis was conducted of the articles relating to both geomorphological maps and social issues to identify the tools that facilitate this interdisciplinary collaboration. The results facilitated the identification of the primary fields of interest for map production, showing that only a limited number of articles employed geomorphological maps for social purposes, for instance, enhancing risk awareness and educating the population about natural hazards. Moreover, the analysis reveals that only a limited number of geomorphological maps are intended to be accessible to people without a high degree of education in earth sciences. In particular, this study highlights a lack of attention to non-specialist users who may struggle to understand the information contained in geomorphological maps. This issue limits the dissemination of geomorphological maps, which are, however, vital for territorial planning and practical purposes. The analyses prompted the authors to consider novel applications of research tools to enhance the dissemination of geomorphological maps, even among non-specialist users. Full article

Deep learning has shown significant advantages over traditional spatial interpolation methods in single image super-resolution (SISR). Recently, many studies have applied super-resolution (SR) methods to generate high-resolution (HR) digital bathymetry models (DBMs), but substantial differences between DBM and natural images have been ignored, which leads to serious distortions and inaccuracies. Given the critical role of HR DBM in marine resource exploitation, economic development, and scientific innovation, we propose a frequency-aware texture matching transformer (FTT) for DBM SR, incorporating global terrain feature extraction (GTFE), high-frequency feature extraction (HFFE), and a terrain matching block (TMB). GTFE has the capability to perceive spatial heterogeneity and spatial locations, allowing it to accurately capture large-scale terrain features. HFFE can explicitly extract high-frequency priors beneficial for DBM SR and implicitly refine the representation of high-frequency information in the global terrain feature. TMB improves fidelity of generated HR DBM by generating position offsets to restore warped textures in deep features. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed FTT has superior performance in terms of elevation, slope, aspect, and fidelity of generated HR DBM. Notably, the root mean square error (RMSE) of elevation in steep terrain has been reduced by 4.89 m, which is a significant improvement in the accuracy and precision of the reconstruction. This research holds significant implications for improving the accuracy of DBM SR methods and the usefulness of HR bathymetry products for future marine research. Full article

This study conducts a comparative evaluation of Turkiye’s carbon emission profile from both sectoral and global perspectives. Utilizing 2022 data from 76 countries, it applies two widely recognized multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods: MEREC, for determining objective weights of criteria, and PROMETHEE II, for ranking countries based on these criteria. All data used in the analysis were obtained from the World Bank, a globally recognized and credible statistical source. The study evaluates seven criteria, including carbon emissions from the energy, transport, industry, and residential sectors, along with GDP-related indicators. The results indicate that Turkiye’s carbon emissions, particularly from industry, transport, and energy, are substantially higher than the global average. Moreover, countries with higher levels of industrialization generally rank lower in environmental performance, highlighting a direct relationship between industrial activity and increased carbon emissions. According to PROMETHEE II rankings, Turkiye falls into the lower-middle tier among the assessed countries. In light of these findings, the study suggests that Turkiye should implement targeted, sector-specific policy measures to reduce emissions. The research aims to provide policymakers with a structured, data-driven framework that aligns with the country’s broader sustainable development goals. MEREC was selected for its ability to produce unbiased criterion weights, while PROMETHEE II was chosen for its capacity to deliver clear and meaningful comparative rankings, making both methods highly suitable for evaluating environmental performance. This study also offers a broader analysis of how selected countries compare in terms of their carbon emissions. As carbon emissions remain one of the most pressing environmental challenges in the context of global warming and climate change, ranking countries based on emission levels serves both to support scientific inquiry and to increase international awareness. By relying on recent 2022 data, the study offers a timely snapshot of the global carbon emission landscape. Alongside its contribution to public awareness, the findings are expected to support policymakers in developing effective environmental strategies. Ultimately, this research contributes to the academic literature and lays a foundation for more sustainable environmental policy development. Full article
