The historical use of toxic chemicals to cause intentional harm has evolved from blister agents in World War I to highly lethal organophosphates and emerging families of chemicals, such as Novichok. In turn, medical or recreational substances like fentanyl, lysergamides, and phencyclidine pose a growing risk of hostile use, particularly related to the rapid proliferation of new psychoactive substances (NPSs). A narrative literature review was conducted covering specialized databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciELO, Google Scholar) and sources from international organizations (OPCW, UNODC, ONU), analyzing historical and recent cases of the use of nerve agents in conflicts and the use of NPSs for hostile purposes. The main families of conventional agents (G, V, A series, and Novichok) and NPSs (lysergamides, PCP, fentanyl derivatives) were identified, highlighting their ease of synthesis, high toxicity profiles, and the regulatory gaps that facilitate their illicit production. In this scenario, it is essential to strengthen regulatory frameworks, surveillance systems, and ethical protocols in chemical research, as well as to promote international cooperation to prevent these substances from becoming chemical threats. The genus Sonchus (Asteraceae) comprises 98 species, including 17 predominantly herbaceous taxa native to the Mediterranean region. These plants have long been utilized as traditional wild food sources due to their high nutritional value, as they are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, essential minerals, and bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This review aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the taxonomy, geographic distribution, phytochemical composition, traditional uses, historical significance, and pharmacological properties of Sonchus species. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, focusing on studies from 1980 to 2024. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and methodological quality was assessed using standardized tools. A bibliometric analysis of 440 publications (from 1856 to 2025) reveals evolving research trends, with S. oleraceus, S. arvensis, and S. asper being the most extensively studied species. The review provides detailed taxonomic insights into 17 species and 14 subspecies, emphasizing their ecological adaptations and biogeographical patterns. Additionally, it highlights the cultural and medicinal relevance of Sonchus since antiquity while underscoring the threats posed by environmental degradation and changing dietary habits. Sonchus oleraceus and S. tenerrimus dominate the culinary applications of the genus, likely due to favorable taste, wide accessibility, and longstanding cultural importance. The comprehensive nutritional profile of Sonchus species positions these plants as valuable contributors to dietary diversity and food security. Finally, the study identifies current knowledge gaps and proposes future research directions to support the conservation and sustainable utilization of Sonchus species. Full article

Background: Developments in biology, genetics, soil science, plant breeding, engineering, and agricultural microbiology are driving advances in soil microbiology and microbial biotechnology. Material and methods: The literature for this review was collected by searching leading scientific databases such as Embase, Medline/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. Results: Recent advances in soil microbiology and biotechnology are discussed, emphasizing the role of microorganisms in sustainable agriculture. It has been shown that soil and plant microbiomes significantly contribute to improving soil fertility and plant and soil health. Microbes promote plant growth through various mechanisms, including potassium, phosphorus, and zinc solubilization, biological nitrogen fixation, production of ammonia, HCN, siderophores, and other secondary metabolites with antagonistic effects. The diversity of microbiomes related to crops, plant protection, and the environment is analyzed, as well as their role in improving food quality, especially under stress conditions. Particular attention was paid to the diversity of microbiomes and their mechanisms supporting plant growth and soil fertility. Conclusions: The key role of soil microorganisms in sustainable agriculture was highlighted. They can support the production of natural substances used as plant protection products, as well as biopesticides, bioregulators, or biofertilizers. Microbial biotechnology also offers potential in the production of sustainable chemicals, such as biofuels or biodegradable plastics (PHA) from plant sugars, and in the production of pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics, hormones, or enzymes. This study presents a comprehensive review and comparative analysis of traditional machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models for land cover classification in agricultural remote sensing. We evaluate the reported successes, trade-offs, and performance metrics of ML and DL models across diverse agricultural contexts. Building on this foundation, we apply both model types to the specific case of almond crop field identification in California’s Central Valley using Landsat data. DL models, including U-Net, MANet, and DeepLabv3+, achieve high accuracy rates of 97.3% to 97.5%, yet our findings demonstrate that conventional ML models—such as Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Random Forest—can reach comparable accuracies of 96.6% to 96.8%. Importantly, the ML models were developed using data from a single year, while DL models required extensive training data spanning 2008 to 2022. Our results highlight that traditional ML models offer robust classification performance with substantially lower computational demands, making them especially valuable in resource-constrained settings. This paper underscores the need for a balanced approach in model selection—one that weighs accuracy alongside efficiency. The findings contribute actionable insights for agricultural land cover mapping and inform ongoing model development in the geospatial sciences. Full article

Background: Statins exhibit pleiotropic anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, suggesting their potential in non-cardiovascular conditions. However, evidence supporting their repurposing remains limited, and off-label prescribing policies vary globally. Objective: To systematically review evidence on statin repurposing in oncology and infectious diseases, and to assess Hungarian regulatory practices regarding off-label statin use. Methods: A systematic literature search (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect; 2010–May 2025) was conducted using the terms “drug repositioning” OR “off-label prescription” AND “statin” NOT “cardiovascular,” following PRISMA guidelines. Hungarian off-label usage data from the NNGYK (2008–2025) were also analyzed. Results: Out of 205 publications, 12 met the inclusion criteria—75% were oncology-focused, and 25% focused on infectious diseases. Most were preclinical (58%); only 25% offered strong clinical evidence. Applications included hematologic malignancies, solid tumors, Cryptococcus neoformans, SARS-CoV-2, and dengue virus. Mechanisms involved mevalonate pathway inhibition and modulation of host immune responses. Hungarian data revealed five approved off-label statin uses—three dermatologic and two pediatric metabolic—supported by the literature and requiring post-treatment reporting. Conclusions: While preclinical findings are promising, clinical validation of off-label statin use remains limited. Statins should be continued in cancer patients with cardiovascular indications, but initiation for other purposes should be trial-based. Future directions include biomarker-based personalization, regulatory harmonization, and cost-effectiveness studies. Full article

Plastic pollution is a growing environmental and social concern, particularly in Southeast Asia, where urban rivers serve as key pathways for transporting waste to marine environments. This scoping review examines 110 peer-reviewed studies to understand how plastic pollution in waterways is being researched, addressed, and reconceptualized. Drawing from the literature across environmental science, technology, and social studies, we identify four interconnected areas of focus: urban pollution pathways, innovations in monitoring and methods, community-based interventions, and interdisciplinary perspectives. Our analysis combines qualitative synthesis with visual mapping techniques, including keyword co-occurrence networks, to explore how real-time tools, such as IoT sensors, multi-sensor systems, and geospatial technologies, are transforming the ways plastic waste is tracked and analyzed. The review also considers the growing use of novel theoretical frameworks, such as post-phenomenology and ecological materialism, to better understand the role of plastics as both pollutants and ecological agents. Despite progress, the literature reveals persistent gaps in longitudinal studies, regional representation, and policy translation, particularly across the Global South. We emphasize the value of participatory models and community-led research in bridging these gaps and advancing more inclusive and responsive solutions. These insights inform the development of plastic tracker technologies currently being piloted in Vietnam and contribute to broader sustainability goals, including SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). Systems thinking (ST) is a foundational cognitive skillset to advance sustainability education but has not been well examined for learners prior to higher education. This case study research in rural middle schools in the Midwestern U.S. examines systems thinking outcomes of a place-based energy literacy unit focused on energy-efficient building design. The unit employs the science of energy-efficient, green buildings to illuminate the ways in which energy flows between natural and built environments. The unit emphasized electrical, light, and thermal energy systems and the ways these systems interact to create functional and energy-efficient buildings. This study focuses on three case study classrooms where students across schools (n = 89 students) created systems models as part of pre- and post-unit tests (n = 162 models). The unit tests consisted of student drawings, annotations, and writings, culminating into student-developed systems models. Growth from pre- to post-test was observed in both the identification of system elements and the linkages between elements. System elements included in the models were common classroom features, such as windows, lights, and temperature control, suggesting that rooting the unit in place-based teaching may support ST skills. Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathies (ACMs) are a phenotypically and etiologically heterogeneous group of myocardial disorders characterized by fibrotic or fibro-fatty replacement of ventricular myocardium, electrical instability, and an elevated risk of sudden cardiac death. Initially identified as a right ventricular disease, ACMs are now recognized to include biventricular and left-dominant forms. Genetic causes account for a substantial proportion of cases and include desmosomal variants, non-desmosomal variants, and familial gene-elusive forms with no identifiable pathogenic mutation. Nongenetic etiologies, including post-inflammatory, autoimmune, and infiltrative mechanisms, may mimic the phenotype. In many patients, the disease remains idiopathic despite comprehensive evaluation. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging has emerged as a key tool for identifying non-ischemic scar patterns and for distinguishing arrhythmogenic phenotypes from other cardiomyopathies. Emerging classifications propose the unifying concept of scarring cardiomyopathies based on shared structural substrates, although global consensus is evolving. Risk stratification remains challenging, particularly in patients without overt systolic dysfunction or identifiable genetic markers. Advances in tissue phenotyping, multi-omics, and artificial intelligence hold promise for improved prognostic assessment and individualized therapy. Full article

Enhancing the nutritional content of crops is crucial for safeguarding human health and mitigating global hunger. A viable method for attaining this goal is the planned implementation of various agronomic practices, including tillage and nutrient provision. A field experiment was executed at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Gödöllő in the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. The study aimed to assess the effects of foliar nutrient supply and soil tillage methods on the grain nutritional composition and mineral content of winter barley. Employing a split-plot design with three replications, the experiment included four nutrient treatments (control, bio-cereal, bio-algae, and MgSMnZn blend) and two soil tillage types (i.e., plowing and cultivator). The results indicated that while protein content was not influenced by the main effects of nutrients and tillage, the levels of β-glucan, starch, crude ash, and moisture content were significantly (p < 0.05) affected by the nutrient treatments and by growing year, treated as a random factor. Notably, bio-algae and bio-cereal nutrients, combined with cultivator tillage, enhanced β-glucan content. All applied nutrient treatments increased the level of starch compared to the control. With regard to grain mineral content, the iron and zinc content responded to the nutrient supply, tillage, and growing year. However, applying a multiple-nutrient composition-based treatment did not increase iron and zinc levels, suggesting that individual applications may be more effective for increasing the content of these minerals in grains. Cultivator tillage improved iron and zinc levels. Moreover, manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) were predominantly affected by nutrient availability and by growing seasons as a random factor. Therefore, to improve grain quality, this study emphasizes the significance of proper nutrient and tillage methods by focusing on the intricate relationships between agronomic techniques and environmental factors that shape barley’s nutritional profile. Background and Objectives: Diabetes is a global public health challenge, with increasing prevalence worldwide. The implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the management of this condition offers potential benefits in improving healthcare outcomes. This study primarily investigates the barriers and facilitators perceived by healthcare professionals in the adoption of AI. Secondarily, by analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data collected, it aims to support the potential development of AI-based programs for diabetes management, with particular focus on a possible bottom-up approach. Materials and Methods: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines for reporting and registered in the Open Science Framework (OSF) database. The study selection process was conducted in two phases—title/abstract screening and full-text review—independently by three researchers, with a fourth resolving conflicts. Data were extracted and assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tools. The included studies were synthesized narratively, combining both quantitative and qualitative analyses to ensure methodological rigor and contextual depth. Results: The adoption of AI tools in diabetes management is influenced by several barriers, including perceived unsatisfactory clinical performance, high costs, issues related to data security and decision-making transparency, as well as limited training among healthcare workers. Key facilitators include improved clinical efficiency, ease of use, time-saving, and organizational support, which contribute to broader acceptance of the technology. Conclusions: The active and continuous involvement of healthcare workers represents a valuable opportunity to develop more effective, reliable, and well-integrated AI solutions in clinical practice. Our findings emphasize the importance of a bottom-up approach and highlight how adequate training and organizational support can help overcome existing barriers, promoting sustainable and equitable innovation aligned with public health priorities. Background/Objectives: High-risk percutaneous coronary interventions (HR-PCIs) often require mechanical circulatory support (MCS) to maintain hemodynamic stability. Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) and percutaneous left ventricular assist device (PLVADare two commonly used MCS devices that differ in their mechanisms. We aimed to evaluate and compare the clinical outcomes associated with IABP and PLVAD use in HR-PCIs without cardiogenic shock. Methods: We conducted a search of PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, Mendeley, Web of Science, and Embase to identify relevant randomized controlled trials and cohort studies, and we included 13 studies for the systematic review and meta-analysis. The primary goal was to define the difference in early mortality (in-hospital and 30-day mortality), major bleeding, and major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE) components (cardiogenic shock, acute kidney injury (AKI), and stroke/TIA) in IABP and PLVAD. We used a random-effects model with the Mantel–Haenszel statistical method to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals. Results: Among 1 trial and 12 cohort studies (35,554 patients; 30,351 IABP and 5203 PLVAD), HR-PCI with IABP was associated with a higher risk of early mortality (OR = 1.53, 95% CI [1.21, 1.94]) and cardiogenic shock (OR = 2.56, 95% CI [1.98, 3.33]) when compared to PLVAD. No significant differences were found in the rates of arrhythmia, major bleeding, AKI, stroke/TIA, or hospital length of stay. Conclusions: In high-risk PCIs, PLVAD use is associated with lower early mortality and cardiogenic shock risk compared to IABP, with no significant differences in other major outcomes. Full article

Objectives: To synthesize evidence on structural and functional neuroplasticity in patients after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) and its clinical implications. Methods: Adhering to the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews and meta-analyses, a literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane CENTRAL (2018–2025) using specific keyword combinations, screening the results based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Among the 27 included studies were the following: (1) sensory cortex reorganization with compensatory visual dependence (5 EEG/fMRI studies); (2) reduced motor cortex efficiency evidenced by elevated AMT (TMS, 8 studies) and decreasedγ-CMC (EEG, 3 studies); (3) progressive corticospinal tract degeneration (increased radial diffusivity correlating with postoperative duration); (4) enhanced sensory-visual integration correlated with functional recovery. Conclusions: This review provides a novel synthesis of evidence from transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), electroencephalography (EEG), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies. It delineates characteristic patterns of post-ACLR structural and functional neural reorganization. Targeting visual–cognitive integration and corticospinal facilitation may optimize rehabilitation. Background/Objectives. This manuscript presents an overview of advances in oncological radiotherapy as an effective treatment method for cancerous tumors, focusing on mechanisms of action within metabolite–antimetabolite systems. The urgency of this topic is underscored by the fact that cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide: as of 2022, approximately 20 million new cases were diagnosed globally, accounting for about 0.25% of the total population. Given prognostic models predicting a steady increase in cancer incidence to 35 million cases by 2050, there is an urgent need for the latest developments in physics, chemistry, molecular biology, pharmacy, and strict adherence to oncological vigilance. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the relationship between the nature and mechanisms of past diagnostic and therapeutic oncology approaches, their current improvements, and future prospects. Particular emphasis is placed on isotope technologies in the production of therapeutic nuclides, focusing on the mechanisms of formation of simple and complex theranostic compounds and their classification according to target specificity. Methods. The methodology involved searching, selecting, and analyzing information from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, as well as from available official online sources over the past 20 years. The search was structured around the structure–mechanism–effect relationship of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The manuscript, including graphic materials, was prepared using a narrative synthesis method. Results. The results present a sequential analysis of materials related to isotope technology, particularly nucleus stability and instability. An explanation of theranostic principles enabled a detailed description of the action mechanisms of radiopharmaceuticals on various receptors within the metabolite–antimetabolite system using specific drug models. Attention is also given to radioactive nanotheranostics, exemplified by the mechanisms of action of radioactive nanoparticles such as Tc-99m, AuNPs, wwAgNPs, FeNPs, and others. Conclusions. Radiotheranostics, which combines the diagnostic properties of unstable nuclei with therapeutic effects, serves as an effective adjunctive and/or independent method for treating cancer patients. Despite the emergence of resistance to both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, existing nuclide resources provide protection against subsequent tumor metastasis. However, given the unfavorable cancer incidence prognosis over the next 25 years, the development of “preventive” drugs is recommended. Progress in this area will be facilitated by modern medical knowledge and a deeper understanding of ligand–receptor interactions to trigger apoptosis in rapidly proliferating cells. Full article

Objectives: Digitalization has revolutionized dentistry, introducing advanced technological tools that improve diagnostic accuracy and access to healthcare. This study aims to examine the effects of integrating digital technologies into the dental field, analyzing the associated benefits and risks, with particular paid attention to the therapeutic relationship and decision-making autonomy. Materials and Methods: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library, complemented by Google Scholar for non-indexed studies. The selection criteria included peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2014 and 2024, focusing on digital dentistry, artificial intelligence, and medical ethics. This is a narrative review. Elements of PRISMA guidelines were applied to enhance transparency in reporting. Results: The analysis highlighted that although digital technologies and AI offer significant benefits, such as more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatments, there are associated risks, including the loss of empathy in the dentist–patient relationship, the risk of overdiagnosis, and the possibility of bias in the data. Conclusions: The balance between technological innovation and the centrality of the dentist is crucial. A human and ethical approach to digital medicine is essential to ensure that technologies improve patient care without compromising the therapeutic relationship. To preserve the quality of dental care, it is necessary to integrate digital technologies in a way that supports, rather than replaces, the therapeutic relationship. Full article

Burnout syndrome is a growing concern in higher education, affecting the psychological well-being and performance of university professors. This systematic review presents a narrative synthesis of findings from quantitative studies on sociodemographic and psychosocial determinants of academic burnout. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, sixty peer-reviewed articles published between Jan 2019 and May 2024 were selected from Scopus and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria required validated psychometric instruments and exclusive focus on university faculty. Methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and CASP checklist. Data from approximately 43,639 academic staff were analyzed. Key risk factors identified include excessive workload, lack of institutional support, and workplace conflict. In contrast, collegial support, participative leadership, and job satisfaction functioned as protective elements. Variables such as age, gender, academic rank, and employment stability significantly influenced burnout vulnerability. While general patterns were observed across studies, differences in design and sampling require caution in generalization. The evidence supports the implementation of integrated strategies encompassing mental health programs, workload regulation, participatory governance, and culturally responsive approaches. These findings inform the development of institutional policies aimed at preventing burnout and fostering academic well-being. Future research should adopt longitudinal and cross-cultural designs to further explore burnout trajectories and support educational reform. Full article
