Characteristics of Varicella Breakthrough Cases in Jinhua City, 2016–2024

Background: Varicella remains a prevalent vaccine-preventable disease, but breakthrough infections are increasingly reported. However, long-term, population-based studies investigating the temporal and demographic characteristics of breakthrough varicella remain limited. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed surveillance data from Jinhua City, China, from 2016 to 2024. Varicella case records were obtained from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP), while vaccination data were retrieved from the Zhejiang Provincial Immunization Program Information System (ISIS). Breakthrough cases were defined as infections occurring more than 42 days after administration of the varicella vaccine. Differences in breakthrough interval were analyzed across subgroups defined by dose, sex, age, population category, and vaccination type. A bivariate cubic regression model was used to assess the combined effect of initial vaccination age and dose interval on the breakthrough interval. Results: Among 28,778 reported varicella cases, 7373 (25.62%) were classified as breakthrough infections, with a significant upward trend over the 9-year period (p < 0.001). Most cases occurred in school-aged children, especially those aged 6–15 years. One-dose recipients consistently showed shorter breakthrough intervals than two-dose recipients (M = 62.10 vs. 120.10 months, p < 0.001). Breakthrough intervals also differed significantly by sex, age group, population category, and vaccination type (p < 0.05). Regression analysis revealed a negative correlation between the initial vaccination age, the dose interval, and the breakthrough interval (R2 = 0.964, p < 0.001), with earlier and closely spaced vaccinations associated with longer protection. Conclusions: The present study demonstrates that a two-dose varicella vaccination schedule, when initiated at an earlier age and administered with a shorter interval between doses, provides more robust and longer-lasting protection. These results offer strong support for incorporating varicella vaccination into China’s National Immunization Program to enhance vaccine coverage and reduce the public health burden associated with breakthrough infections. In the Swedish compulsory school, system multilingual students’ reading and writing development is supported, among other measures and practices, by heritage language (HL) teachers. To effectively support multilingual students, whether they require special educational assistance or not, collaboration between heritage language teachers and special education needs (SEN) teachers is essential. Thus, a key consideration is how HL and SEN teachers work together to promote reading and writing skills in multilingual children. We present two sub-studies: Study 1, a questionnaire answered by 33 HL teachers, and Study 2, consisting of in-depth interviews with a different group of 13 HL teachers. Both sub-studies aim to increase our understanding of HL teachers’ experiences of collaborative practices with SEN teachers for promoting reading and writing development among multilingual students with or without the need of special educational support. The findings reveal that HL teachers, though well qualified and committed, are often excluded from collaborative planning with SEN teachers. This study highlights the systemic barriers and opportunities for improving literacy support through interprofessional collaboration. Full article

Discriminative Capacity of Visceral Adiposity and Triglyceride Glucose-Waist Circumference Indices for Metabolic Syndrome in Spanish Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background/Objectives: Adolescence is a critical period for the early detection of metabolic syndrome (MetS), a condition that increases the risk of cardiometabolic diseases in adulthood. Timely identification of at-risk adolescents enables targeted prevention strategies. This study aimed to analyze the discriminative capacity and accuracy of six biochemical and/or anthropometric indices related to lipid metabolism and adiposity for the early detection of MetS in a sample of Spanish adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out according to the STROBE guidelines. A sample of 981 adolescents aged 11–16 years old were randomly recruited from schools in Southeastern Spain. The presence or absence of MetS was determined according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. The following biochemical and/or anthropometric indices were evaluated: triglyceride glucose index, visceral adiposity index, logarithm children’s lipid accumulation product, triglyceride glucose-body mass index, triglyceride glucose-waist circumference, and triglyceride glucose-waist-to-hip ratio. Results: The triglyceride glucose-waist-to-hip ratio and triglyceride glucose-body mass index parameters were the strongest indicators associated with MetS in boys and girls, respectively, after adjusting for several factors. Moreover, all evaluated indices showed optimal AUC values, with the visceral adiposity index and triglyceride glucose-waist circumference index exhibiting the highest discriminative capacity in both genders. Conclusions: The evaluated biochemical and anthropometric indices—particularly visceral adiposity index and triglyceride-glucose-waist circumference—show promise as accessible biomarkers for identifying adolescents at metabolic risk. These indices may serve as practical tools in preventive health strategies aimed at improving metabolic health by screening adolescents at risk of MetS, thereby helping to reduce the future burden of non-communicable diseases. Background: Bullying is a significant problem worldwide and in Lithuania, especially among children and adolescents. This study aimed to assess the associations of bullying with adolescents’ subjective sense of happiness and general health. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous written questionnaire. Adolescents at various schools across Lithuanian cities and districts were surveyed to investigate the frequency of bullying among them over the past six months and its impact on their subjective sense of happiness and well-being. Results: This study included 4124 students from seventh to tenth grade; their average age was 14.48 ± 1.15 years, with 49.35% being boys. Over the past six months, the highest bullying incidence occurred at school, accounting for 25.79% of the cases. Only half of the respondents (48.81%) felt happy, and a little more than half felt healthy (63.11%). It was found that bullying at school (ρs = −0.224; ρs = −0.197), outside school (ρs = −0.207; ρs = −0.180), and online (ρs = −0.175; ρs = −0.110) is associated with adolescents’ sense of happiness and health. Conclusion: Bullying is common among Lithuanian adolescents and has a negative impact on their subjective happiness and well-being. It is crucial to develop prevention initiatives to decrease bullying in schools and within the community. Full article

The purpose of this study was to examine vegetable consumption and its relationship with lifestyle characteristics among children and adolescents. Data from a health survey administered to a representative sample of 177,091 schoolchildren between the ages of 8 and 17 were employed in this observational, cross-sectional investigation. Physical activity level, screen time, and sleeping patterns were assessed using self-completed questionnaires. Vegetable consumption and dietary habits were analyzed using the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for Children and Adolescents. Participants consuming vegetables more than once daily were categorized as consumers vs. non-consumers. Physical education teachers measured anthropometric and physical fitness factors. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression analysis were conducted, and the odds ratio with the corresponding 95% confidence interval was calculated and adjusted for confounders. Vegetables were consumed once or more times a day by more females than males (25.5% vs. 24.0%, p < 0.001). In both sexes, vegetable consumers slept more, ate healthier, spent less time on screens, and had better anthropometric and aerobic fitness measurements than non-consumers. Healthy eating practices, such as regularly consuming fruits, legumes, nuts, and dairy products, were strongly correlated with vegetable intake. For every one-year increase in age, the odds of being a vegetable consumer decreased by 8% and 10% in boys and girls, respectively. Overweight/obese participants had lower odds of being a vegetable consumer by 20%. Increased screen time, inadequate physical activity, and insufficient sleeping hours decreased the odds of being a vegetable consumer by 22%, 30%, and 25%, respectively (all p-values < 0.001). Overall, a healthier lifestyle profile was associated with higher vegetable intake for both sexes among children and adolescents. Full article

In this pilot study, the crossing behavior of elementary school students commuting on bicycles was investigated with the objective of enhancing safety around pedestrian crossings within school zones. With a noticeable increase in crashes involving young cyclists near schools, this research assessed the effectiveness of visual nudges in the form of red strips displaying “CYCLISTS DISMOUNT” instructions. Initial observations indicated a lack of compliance with dismounting regulations. After the initial observations, a specific elementary school was selected for the implementation of the nudging intervention and additional pre- (N = 91) and post-intervention (N = 71) observations. The pre-intervention observations again revealed poor adherence to the regulations requiring cyclists to dismount at specific points. Following our targeted intervention, the post-intervention observations marked an improvement in compliance. Indeed, the visual nudge effectively communicated the necessity of dismounting at a critical location, leading to a higher rate of adherence among cyclists (52.74% pre-intervention, 97.18% post-intervention). Although it also indirectly affected the behavior of the accompanying adult, who more often held hands with their children while crossing, this effect was weaker than the direct effect on dismounting behavior (20.88% pre-intervention, 39.44% post-intervention). The findings of the current pilot study underscore the possible impact of nudging on behavior and advocate for a combined approach utilizing physical nudges to bolster safety within school zones. Follow-up research, including, for instance, multiple sites, long-term effects, or children traveling alone, is called for. Full article

Objectives: Norovirus outbreaks occur in densely populated environments, such as long-term care facilities, hospitals, and schools. On 22 October 2022, an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis was reported at a kindergarten in Korea. An epidemiologic investigation was conducted to identify the source of the infection and prevent further spread. Methods: Rectal swab and environmental samples were collected for bacterial and viral testing. A retrospective cohort study was conducted among 114 kindergarteners at the kindergarten. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess associations of contact with the primary case, as well as food and water consumption. Results: Of the kindergarteners, 28 out of 114 (24.6%) met the case definition. The primary case occurred on 19 October, and subsequent cases began on 21 October. Sharing the same four-year-old class as the primary case (RR, 2.56; 95% CI, 1.35–4.87), being in the same regular class (RR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.27–4.41), being on the same floor during after-school class (RR, 3.49; 95% CI, 1.74–7.00), and attending the same English class (RR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.05–3.72) were statistically significant. Consumption of drinking water on the third floor and fourth floor on 20 October had significantly higher and lower RRs, respectively. Norovirus was detected in 9 out of 18 rectal swab samples (50.0%). Conclusions: This norovirus outbreak at the kindergarten was presumed to have been caused by person-to-person transmission from the primary case. Isolation and restriction of symptomatic children in kindergartens should be thoroughly implemented. Additionally, enhanced surveillance among family members of affected individuals is necessary to prevent further outbreaks. Full article

Computational Thinking (CT) has been an important concept for the computer science education community in the last 20 years. In this work we performed a systematic review of the literature regarding the computational thinking of children from kindergarten to primary school. We compiled a large dataset of one hundred and twenty (120) studies from the literature. Through analysis of these studies, we tried to reveal important insights and draw interesting and valid conclusions. We analyzed various qualitative and quantitative aspects of the studies, including the sample size, the year of publication, the country of origin, the studies’ design and duration, the computational tools used, and so on. An important aspect of the work is to highlight differences between different study designs. We identified a total of 120 studies, with more than half of them (>50%) originating from Asian countries. Most studies (82.5%) conducted some form of intervention, aiming to improve their computational thinking in students. A smaller proportion (17.5%) were assessment studies in which the authors conducted assessments regarding the children’s computational thinking. On average, intervention studies had a smaller number of participants, but differences in duration could not be identified. There was also a lack of large-scale longitudinal studies. Block-based coding (i.e., Scratch) and Plugged and Unplugged activities were observed in high numbers in both categories of studies. CT assessment tools showed great variability. Efforts for standardization and reaching a consensus are needed in this regard. Finally, robotic systems have been found to play a major role in interventions over the last years. Full article

The Effects of Nutritional Education and School-Based Exercise Intervention Programs on Preschool and Primary School Children’s Cardiometabolic Biomarkers: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials

Childhood obesity increases chronic disease risk, but no comprehensive synthesis has evaluated the impact of school-based combined nutrition education and physical activity interventions on cardiometabolic biomarkers in children aged 3 to 12 years. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251085194). Five databases were systematically searched through June 2025. Twelve randomized controlled trials involving 18,231 children were included and assessed using the PEDro scale. Ten trials demonstrated significant improvements in at least one cardiometabolic biomarker. Blood pressure (8 studies) outcomes showed systolic reductions of 1.41–6.0 mmHg in six studies. Glucose metabolism (5 studies) improved in two studies with reductions of 0.20–0.22 mmol/L. Lipid profiles (7 studies) improved in three studies, including total cholesterol (−0.32 mmol/L). Insulin levels (5 studies) decreased significantly in two investigations. Anthropometric improvements included BMI and body fat. Physical activity increased by >45 min/week and dietary habits improved significantly. Programs with daily implementation (90-min sessions 4x/week), longer duration (≥12 months), family involvement (parent education), and curriculum integration (classroom lessons) showed superior effectiveness. Interventions targeting children with overweight/obesity demonstrated higher changes compared to the general population. However, methodological limitations included a lack of assessor blinding, absence of subject/therapist blinding, and inadequate retention rates. School-based interventions combining nutrition and physical activity can produce significant improvements in cardiometabolic biomarkers, supporting comprehensive, sustained multicomponent programs for early chronic disease prevention. Background and Objectives: The long-term renal and cardiovascular effects of neonatal acute kidney injury (AKI) in preterm infants remain unclear. This study investigated whether neonatal AKI leads to persistent subclinical kidney injury and blood pressure changes in school-aged children born preterm. Methods: In this prospective cohort, preterm-born children (≤35 weeks’ gestation) with (n = 19) and without (n = 38) neonatal AKI were evaluated at 7–12 years. A term-born control group (n = 44) was included for biomarker comparison. Assessments included perinatal data, anthropometry, office and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), and renal ultrasonography. Kidney function was evaluated using serum creatinine (sCr), cystatin C, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Tubular injury was assessed using urinary kidney injury molecule-1/Cr (KIM-1/Cr), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin/Cr (NGAL/Cr), and trefoil factor 3/Cr (TFF3/Cr) ratios, as well as serum TFF3. Results: Conventional kidney function markers were similar among groups. However, the AKI group had higher serum cystatin C, lower cystatin C–based eGFR, and elevated urinary KIM-1/Cr and NGAL/Cr compared to no-AKI and term controls. Serum TFF3 was also higher in the AKI group. ABPM revealed higher nocturnal systolic blood pressure and blood pressure load in the AKI group. Kidney size did not differ between preterm subgroups. Conclusions: Neonatal AKI in preterm infants is associated with subtle alterations and potential renal stress or injury at school age, detectable only with sensitive biomarkers and ABPM. Further prospective studies are needed to validate these biomarkers and determine their role in predicting long-term outcomes in preterm infants with neonatal AKI. Full article

Background/Objectives: Vertical jump is considered a reliable and valid method of assessing the level of muscular power and coordination across one’s lifespan. The main aim of the present study was to establish sex- and age-normative data for vertical jump outcomes in pre-school children. Methods: We recruited 411 boys and girls aged 3−6 years from four major cities in Croatia and Slovenia. Vertical jump was assessed with two tests: countermovement jump (CMJ) without and with arm swing using a reliable and valid Optojump measuring platform. Data were presented for the 5th, 15th, 25th, 50th (median), 75th, 90th, and 95th percentile. Results: No significant differences were observed in multiple vertical jump outcomes between boys and girls. The mean values for CMJ without and with arm swing between boys and girls were as follows: contact time (1.4 vs. 1.4 s/1.8 vs. 1.7 s), flight time (0.32 vs. 0.31 s/0.33 vs. 0.32), height (12.3 vs. 12.2 cm/13.0 vs. 12.5 cm), power (9.4 vs. 9.5 W/kg/9.3 vs. 9.1 W/kg), pace (0.7 vs. 0.7 steps/s/0.6 vs. 0.6 steps/s), reactive strength index (RSI; 0.10 vs. 0.09 m/s/0.08 vs. 0.08 m/s), and verticality (2.5 vs. 2.3/1.9 vs. 1.9). A gradual increase in all measures according to ‘age’ was observed (p for trend < 0.05). No significant ‘sex*age’ interaction was observed (p > 0.05). Conclusions: This is one of the first studies to provide sex- and age-normative data for complete vertical jump outcomes in pre-school children. These data will serve as an avenue for monitoring and tracking motor development in this sensitive period. Full article

Objectives: This study assessed the effectiveness of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based fine dust education program, grounded in the Health Belief Model (HBM), on elementary students’ fine dust knowledge, related behaviors, and mental health (depression, anxiety, stress, sleep quality). Methods: From September to November 2024, 95 students (grades 4–6) living near a coal-fired power plant in midwestern South Korea were assigned to either an intervention group (n = 44) or a control group (n = 51). The intervention group completed a three-session CBT-based education program; the control group received stress management education. Assessments were conducted at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 8 using standardized mental health and behavior scales (PHQ: Patient Health Questionnaire, GAD: Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment, PSS: Perceived Stress Scale, ISI: Insomnia Severity Index). Results: A chi-square test was conducted to compare pre- and post-test changes in knowledge and behavior related to PM2.5. The intervention group showed significant improvements in seven fine dust-related knowledge and behavior items (e.g., PM2.5 awareness rose from 33.3% to 75.0%; p < 0.05). The control group showed limited gains. Regarding mental health, based on a mixed-design ANCOVA, anxiety scores significantly declined over time in the intervention group, with group and interaction effects also significant (p < 0.05). Depression scores showed time effects, but group and interaction effects were not significant. No significant changes were observed for stress, sleep, or group × PM2.5 interactions. Conclusions: The CBT-based education program effectively enhanced fine dust knowledge, health behaviors, and reduced anxiety among students. It presents a promising, evidence-based strategy to promote environmental and mental health in school-aged children. Full article

Background/Objectives: Obesity in adolescence is associated with a deterioration in cognitive functions, with significant implications for psychophysical well-being and academic performance. Recent studies highlight the importance of integrated interventions that combine nutrition education and physical activity to promote the overall health of students. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of an integrated intervention based on nutritional education and conscious body movement in improving cognitive functions, perceived well-being and nutritional knowledge in lower secondary school students with indicators of overweight and obesity. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with randomization at the class level was adopted, involving 60 students divided into an experimental group and control group. The intervention was divided into twelve weeks of activities, divided between nutritional education modules and physical activity courses. Standardized tests for the assessment of cognitive functions (Digit Span Forward, Digit Span Backward, Stroop Test, Trail Making Test B), motor tests (6-Minute Walk Test, Sit and Reach Test) and a food knowledge questionnaire were administered before and after the intervention. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements compared to the control group in all cognitive, motor, and nutritional knowledge measures, indicating the effectiveness of the integrated intervention in promoting cognitive and physical well-being. Conclusions: The findings support the role of school as a generative environment of integrated well-being, suggesting the need to develop and implement curricular programs that integrate nutrition education and physical activity to counteract the negative effects of obesity on cognitive function in adolescents. Hand hygiene (HH) is essential for preventing disease transmission, particularly in schools where children are in close contact with other children. This study evaluated a school-based intervention on observed HH practices and hand cleanliness in six primary schools in Guatemala. Hand cleanliness was measured using the Quantitative Personal Hygiene Assessment Tool. The intervention included (1) HH behavior change promotion through Handwashing Festivals, and (2) increased access to HH materials at HH stations. Handwashing Festivals were day-long events featuring creative student presentations on HH topics. Schools were provided with soap and alcohol-based hand rub throughout the project to support HH practices. Appropriate HH practices declined from 51.2% pre-intervention to 33.1% post-intervention, despite an improvement in median Quantitative Personal Hygiene Assessment Tool scores from 6 to 8, indicating cleaner hands. Logistic regression showed higher odds of proper HH when an assistant was present. The decline in HH adherence was likely influenced by fewer assistants and changes in COVID-19 policies, while improvements in hand cleanliness may reflect observational bias. These findings emphasize the importance of sustained behavior change strategies, reliable HH material access, and targeted interventions to address gaps in HH practices, guiding school health policy and resource allocation. Racket sports are very popular not only in professional sports but also among recreational players. As a result, their impact on the field of education has grown significantly in recent years. Table tennis (TT) offers significant advantages in terms of skill acquisition and health improvement. Nevertheless, its application within physical education (PE) curricula remains undetermined. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the use of TT as educational content in the subject of PE in primary school. The PRISMA 2020 methodology was used to conduct the systematic review. Six databases (ERIC, Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Sport Discus, and Web of Science) were used during the search process. The search cutoff date was December 31, 2024. After applying the eligibility criteria, 3595 articles were found. Only seven studies were selected for the final analysis and the data included 1526 students from primary school. The results indicate that TT is rarely used in primary education during PE classes. Research indicates interest among teachers and students in playing it during PE. Furthermore, due to the benefits, motivation, and interest this sport generates, educational experiences have been developed, such as roundtable discussions, table top tennis, balloon TT, and TT triathlon. A lack of materials, facilities, and teacher training for teaching this sport is notable. The teaching experiences analyzed in this review confirm that TT is a highly versatile and interesting sport as a subject matter in school PE. The use of TT allows for innovative, comprehensive, and inclusive PE, thanks to the sport’s multiple possibilities. Given its adaptability and low entry barrier, TT could serve as an effective tool for increasing children’s physical activity levels, improving motor skills, and fostering social–emotional development. However further research is needed to quantify its impact on health outcomes such as cardiovascular fitness or obesity prevention. Full article
