Excess Commuting in Rural Minnesota: Ethnic and Industry Disparities

Research on commuting patterns has mainly focused on urban and metropolitan areas, and such studies are not typically applied to rural and small-town regions, where workers often face longer commutes due to limited job opportunities and inadequate public transportation. By using the Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) data, this research fills that gap by analyzing commuting behavior by ethnic group and industry in south-central Minnesota, which is a predominantly rural area of 13 counties in the United States. The results show that both white and minority groups in District 7 experienced an increase in excess commuting from 2006 to 2016, with the minority group in Nobles County showing a significantly higher rise. Analysis by industry reveals that excess commuting in the leisure and hospitality sector (including arts, entertainment, and food services) in Nobles County increased five-fold during this time, indicating a severe spatial mismatch between jobs and affordable housing. In contrast, manufacturing experienced a decline of 50%, possibly indicating better commuting efficiency or a loss of manufacturing jobs. These findings can help city and transportation planners conduct an in-depth analysis of rural-to-urban commuting patterns and develop potential solutions to improve rural transportation infrastructure and accessibility, such as promoting telecommuting and hybrid work options, expanding shuttle routes, and adding more on-demand transit services in rural areas. In recent years, the advancement of various applications, data mining, technologies, and socio-technical systems has led to the development of interactive platforms that enhance user experiences through personalization. In the sports domain, users can access training plans, routes and healthy habits, all in a personalized way thanks to sports recommender systems. These recommendation engines are fueled by rich datasets that are collected through continuous monitoring of users’ activities. However, their potential to address user profiling is limited to single users and not to the dynamics of groups of sportsmen. This paper introduces GoSS-Rec, a Group-oriented Segment Sequence Recommender System, which is designed for groups of cyclists who participate in fitness activities. The system analyzes collective preferences and activity records to provide personalized route recommendations that encourage exploration of diverse cycling paths and also enhance group activities. Our experiments show that GoSS-Rec, which is based on Prod2vec, consistently outperforms other models on diversity and novelty, regardless of the group size. This indicates the potential of our model to provide unique and customized suggestions, making GoSS-Rec a remarkable innovation in the field of sports recommender systems. Multi-vessel formation shipping demonstrates significant potential for enhancing maritime transportation efficiency and economy. However, existing route planning systems inadequately address the unique challenges of formations, where traditional methods fail to integrate global optimality, local dynamic obstacle avoidance, and formation coordination into a cohesive system. Global planning often neglects multi-ship collaborative constraints, while local methods disregard vessel maneuvering characteristics and formation stability. This paper proposes GLFM, a three-layer hierarchical framework (global optimization–local adjustment-formation collaboration module) for intelligent route planning of transport ship formations. GLFM integrates an improved multi-objective A* algorithm for global path optimization under dynamic meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) conditions and International Maritime Organization (IMO) safety regulations, with an enhanced Artificial Potential Field (APF) method incorporating ship safety domains for dynamic local obstacle avoidance. Formation, structural stability, and coordination are achieved through an improved leader–follower approach. Simulation results demonstrate that GLFM-generated trajectories significantly outperform conventional routes, reducing average risk level by 38.46% and voyage duration by 12.15%, while maintaining zero speed and period violation rates. Effective obstacle avoidance is achieved, with the leader vessel navigating optimized global waypoints and followers maintaining formation structure. The GLFM framework successfully balances global optimality with local responsiveness, enhances formation transportation efficiency and safety, and provides a comprehensive solution for intelligent route optimization in multi-constrained marine convoy operations. Produce supply chains play a critical role in ensuring fruits and vegetables reach consumers efficiently, affordably, and at optimal freshness. In recent decades, hub-and-spoke network models have emerged as valuable tools for optimizing sustainable cold food supply chains. Traditional optimization efforts typically focus on removing inefficiencies, minimizing lead times, refining inventory management, strengthening supplier relationships, and leveraging technological advancements for better visibility and control. However, the majority of models rely on deterministic approaches that overlook the inherent uncertainties of crop yields, which are further intensified by climate variability. Rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations, along with shifting temperature patterns and extreme weather events, have a substantial effect on crop productivity and availability. Such uncertainties can prompt distributors to seek alternative sources, increasing costs due to supply chain reconfiguration. This research introduces a stochastic hub-and-spoke network optimization model specifically designed to minimize transportation expenses by determining optimal distribution routes that explicitly account for climate variability effects on crop yields. A use case involving a cold food supply chain (CFSC) was carried out using several weather scenarios based on climate models and real soil data for California. Strawberries were selected as a representative crop, given California’s leading role in strawberry production. Simulation results show that scenarios characterized by increased rainfall during growing seasons result in increased yields, allowing distributors to reduce transportation costs by sourcing from nearby farms. Conversely, scenarios with reduced rainfall and lower yields require sourcing from more distant locations, thereby increasing transportation costs. Nonetheless, supply chain configurations may vary depending on the choice of climate models or weather prediction sources, highlighting the importance of regularly updating scenario inputs to ensure robust planning. This tool aids decision-making by planning climate-resilient supply chains, enhancing preparedness and responsiveness to future climate-related disruptions. Full article

Bisphenol E Neurotoxicity in Zebrafish Larvae: Effects and Underlying Mechanisms

As typical environmental hormones, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have become a global environmental health issue of high concern due to their property of interfering with the endocrine systems of organisms. As a commonly used substitute for bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol E (BPE) has been frequently detected in environmental matrices such as soil and water in recent years. Existing research has unveiled the developmental and reproductive toxicity of BPE; however, only one in vitro cellular experiment has preliminarily indicated potential neurotoxic risks, with its underlying mechanisms remaining largely unelucidated in the current literature. Potential toxic mechanisms and action targets of BPE were predicted using the zebrafish model via network toxicology and molecular docking, with RT-qPCRs being simultaneously applied to uncover neurotoxic effects and associated mechanisms of BPE. A significant decrease (p < 0.05) in the frequency of embryonic spontaneous movements was observed in zebrafish at exposure concentrations ≥ 0.01 mg/L. At 72 hpf and 144 hpf, the larval body length began to shorten significantly from 0.1 mg/L to 1 mg/L, respectively (p < 0.01), accompanied by a reduced neuronal fluorescence intensity and a shortened neural axon length (p < 0.01). By 144 hpf, the motor behavior in zebrafish larvae was inhibited. Through network toxicology and molecular docking, HSP90AB1 was identified as the core target, with the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway determined to be the primary route through which BPE induces neurotoxicity in zebrafish larvae. BPE induces neuronal apoptosis and disrupts neurodevelopment by inhibiting the cGMP/PKG signaling pathway, ultimately suppressing the larval motor behavior. To further validate the experimental outcomes, we measured the expression levels of genes associated with neurodevelopment (elavl3, mbp, gap43, syn2a), serotonergic synaptic signaling (5-ht1ar, 5-ht2ar), the cGMP/PKG pathway (nos3), and apoptosis (caspase-3, caspase-9). These results offer crucial theoretical underpinnings for evaluating the ecological risks of BPE and developing environmental management plans, as well as crucial evidence for a thorough comprehension of the toxic effects and mechanisms of BPE on neurodevelopment in zebrafish larvae. The typical ranges available for electric vehicles (EVs) may be considered by users to be inadequate when compared to long, real-life trips, and charging operations may need to be planned along journeys. To evaluate the compatibility between vehicle features and charging options for realistic journeys performed by car, a simulation approach is proposed here, using travel data collected from real vehicles to obtain trip chains for multiple consecutive days. Car travel activities, including stops with the option of charging, were simulated by applying an agent-based approach. Charging operations can be integrated into trip chains for user activities, assuming that they remain unchanged in the event that vehicles switch to electric. The energy consumption of the analyzed trips, disaggregated by vehicle type, was estimated using the average travel speed, which is useful for capturing the main route features (ranging from urban to motorways). Data were recorded for approximately 25,000 vehicles in the Turin Metropolitan Area for six consecutive days. Market segmentation of the vehicles was introduced to take into consideration different energy consumption rates and charging times, given that the electric power, battery size, and consumption rate can be related to the vehicle category. Charging activities carried out using public infrastructure during idle time between consecutive trips, as well as those carried out at home or work, were identified in order to model different needs. Intelligent driving technology is expected to reshape urban transportation, but its promotion is hindered by user acceptance challenges and diverse technical routes. This study proposes a comprehensive user acceptance evaluation framework for intelligent driving from the perspective of value engineering (VE). The novelty of this framework lies in three aspects: (1) It unifies behavioral theory and utility theory under the value engineering framework, and it extracts key indicators such as safety, travel efficiency, trust, comfort, and cost, thus addressing the issue of the lack of integration between subjective and objective factors in previous studies. (2) It establishes a systematic mapping mechanism from technical solutions to evaluation indicators, filling the gap of insufficient targeting at different technical routes in the existing literature. (3) It quantifies acceptance differences via VE’s core formula of V = F/C, overcoming the ambiguity of non-technical evaluation in prior research. A case study comparing single-vehicle intelligence vs. collaborative intelligence and different sensor combinations (vision-only, map fusion, and lidar fusion) shows that collaborative intelligence and vision-based solutions offer higher comprehensive acceptance due to balanced functionality and cost. This framework guides enterprises in technical strategy planning and assists governments in formulating industrial policies by quantifying acceptance differences across technical routes. Full article

The periodic vehicle routing problem (PVRP) is a well-known challenge in real-life logistics, requiring the planning of vehicle routes over multiple days while enforcing visitation frequency constraints. Although numerous metaheuristic and exact methods have tackled various PVRP extensions, real-world settings call for additional features such as depot configurations, tight visitation frequency constraints, and heterogeneous fleets. In this paper, we present a two-phase biased–randomized algorithm that addresses these complexities. In the first phase, a round-robin assignment quickly generates feasible and promising solutions, ensuring each customer’s frequency requirement is met across the multi-day horizon. The second phase refines these assignments via an iterative search procedure, improving route efficiency and reducing total operational costs. Extensive experimentation on standard PVRP benchmarks shows that our approach is able to generate solutions of comparable quality to established state-of-the-art algorithms in relatively low computational times and stands out in many instances, making it a practical choice for real life multi-day vehicle routing applications. The utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in missions such as reconnaissance and surveillance has grown rapidly, underscoring the need for efficient path planning algorithms that ensure both optimality and collision avoidance. The A-star algorithm is widely used for global path planning due to its ability to generate optimal routes; however, its high computational cost makes it unsuitable for real-time applications, particularly in unknown or dynamic environments. For local path planning, the Artificial Potential Field (APF) algorithm enables real-time navigation by attracting the UAV toward the target while repelling it from obstacles. Despite its efficiency, APF suffers from local minima and limited performance in dynamic settings. To address these challenges, this paper proposes the A-star-Guided Potential Field (AGPF) algorithm, which integrates the strengths of A-star and APF to achieve robust performance in both global and local path planning. The AGPF algorithm was validated through simulations conducted in the Robot Operating System (ROS) environment. Simulation results demonstrate that AGPF produces smoother and more optimal paths than A-star, while avoiding the local minima issues inherent in APF. Furthermore, AGPF effectively handles moving and previously unknown obstacles by generating real-time avoidance trajectories, demonstrating strong adaptability in dynamic and uncertain environments. Karst groundwater systems are critical to water supply and ecological sustainability in northern China, yet their heterogeneity poses challenges for flow characterization. The Yuquan Mountain (YM) Spring, historically a major karst spring in western Beijing, has experienced persistent drying, raising concerns about its recharge and flow mechanisms. This study integrates published isotope data, spatial distributions of Na+ and Cl as hydrochemical tracers, groundwater age estimates, and geophysical survey results to assess the recharge sources and flow pathways within the YM Spring catchment area. The analysis identifies two major recharge zones: the Tanzhesi area, primarily recharged by direct infiltration of precipitation through exposed carbonate rocks, and the Junzhuang area, which receives mixed recharge from rainfall and Yongding River seepage. Three potential flow pathways are proposed, including shallow flow along faults and strata, and a deeper, speculative route through the Jiulongshan-Xiangyu syncline. The synthesis of multiple lines of evidence leads to a refined conceptual model that illustrates how geological structures govern recharge, flow, and discharge processes in this karst system. These findings not only enhance the understanding of subsurface hydrodynamics in complex geological settings but also provide a scientific basis for future spring restoration planning and groundwater management strategies in the regions. Urban areas are facing increasing traffic congestion, pollution, and infrastructure strain. Traditional urban transportation systems are often fragmented. They require users to plan, pay, and travel across multiple disconnected services. Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) integrates these services into a single digital platform, simplifying access and improving the user experience. This review critically examines the role of MaaS in fostering sustainable mobility ecosystems. MaaS aims to enhance user-friendliness, service variety, and sustainability by adopting a customer-centric approach to transportation. The findings reveal that successful MaaS systems consistently align with multimodal transport infrastructure, equitable access policies, and strong public-private partnerships. MaaS enhances the management of routes and traffic, effectively mitigating delays and congestion while concurrently reducing energy consumption and fuel usage. In this study, the authors examine MaaS as a new mobility paradigm for a sustainable transportation system in smart cities, observing the challenges and opportunities associated with its implementation. To assess the environmental impact, a sustainability index is calculated based on the use of different modes of transportation. Significant findings indicate that MaaS systems are proliferating in both quantity and complexity, increasingly integrating capabilities such as real-time multimodal planning, dynamic pricing, and personalized user profiles. Research in on-orbit processing enables edge AI deployment over satellite optical networks. However, these operations induce frequent battery discharge cycles, particularly depth-of-discharge (DoD) events, which accelerate degradation and curtail satellite longevity. To address this, we propose green task-aware routing planning (GreenRP), a task-aware routing framework that achieves sustainable edge AI through dynamic task offloading and discharge-resilient path orchestration. GreenRP employs a novel battery aging model explicitly coupling DoD effects with laser inter-satellite link dynamics under AI workloads, enhancing system sustainability. Comprehensive evaluation on a 1152-satellite constellation demonstrates that GreenRP extends network lifetime by 176% over shortest-path routing while meeting latency and completion rate targets. This work enables reliable edge AI via sustainable satellite resource utilization. Full article

This research addresses the challenges of proactive scheduling and routing in manufacturing systems governed by the Material Requirement Planning (MRP) method. Such systems often face capacity constraints, difficulties in resource balancing, and limited traceability of component requirements. The lack of seamless integration between customer orders and production tasks, combined with the manual and time-consuming nature of schedule adjustments, highlights the need for an automated and optimized scheduling method. We propose a novel optimization-based approach that leverages mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) combined with a proprietary procedure for reducing the size of the modeled problem to generate feasible and/or optimal production schedules. The model incorporates dynamic routing, partial resource utilization, limited additional resources (e.g., tools, workers), technological breaks, and time quantization. Key results include determining order feasibility, identifying unfulfilled order components, minimizing costs, shortening deadlines, and assessing feasibility in the absence of available resources. By automating the generation of data from MRP/ERP systems, constructing an optimization model, and exporting the results back to the MRP/ERP structure, this method improves decision-making and competes with expensive Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) systems. The proposed innovation solution—the integration of MILP-based optimization with the proprietary PT (data transformation) and PR (model-size reduction) procedures—not only increases operational efficiency but also enables demand source tracking and offers a scalable and economical alternative for modern production environments. Experimental results demonstrate significant reductions in production costs (up to 25%) and lead times (more than 50%). Full article

Determining/predicting the environment dominates a variety of marine operations, such as route planning and offshore installation. Significant wave height (Hs) is a critical parameter-defining wave, a dominating marine load. Data-driven machine learning methods have been increasingly applied to Hs prediction, but challenges remain in hyperparameter tuning and spatial generalization. This study explores a novel effective approach for intelligent Hs forecasting for marine operations. Multiple automated machine learning (AutoML) frameworks, namely H2O, PyCaret, AutoGluon, and TPOT, have been systematically evaluated on buoy-based Hs prediction tasks, which reveal their advantages and limitations under various forecast horizons and data quality scenarios. The results indicate that PyCaret achieves superior accuracy in short-term forecasts, while AutoGluon demonstrates better robustness in medium-term and long-term predictions. To address the limitations of single-point prediction models, which often exhibit high dependence on localized data and limited spatial generalization, a multi-point data fusion framework incorporating Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is proposed. The framework utilizes Hs data from two stations near the California coast to predict Hs at another adjacent station. The results indicate that it is possible to realize cross-station predictions based on the data from adjacent (high relevance) stations. Full article

Review of the Use of Waste Materials in Rigid Airport Pavements: Opportunities, Benefits and Implementation

The aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining safety and performance standards. One promising area for improvement lies in the use of sustainable materials in airport infrastructure. One of the issues preventing uptake of emerging sustainable technologies is the lack of guidance relating to the opportunities, potential benefits, associated risks and an implementation plan specific to airport pavements. This research reviewed opportunities to incorporate waste materials into rigid airport pavements, focusing on concrete base slabs. Commonly used supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) were considered, as well as recycled aggregates, including recycled concrete aggregate (RCA), recycled crushed glass (RCG), and blast furnace slag (BFS). Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) were also used to quantify the potential for environmental benefit associated with various concrete mixtures, with findings showing 23% to 50% reductions in embodied carbon are possible for selected theoretical concrete mixtures that incorporate waste materials. With considered evaluation and structured implementation, the integration of waste materials into rigid airport pavements offers a practical and effective route to improve environmental outcomes in aviation infrastructure. It was concluded that a Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework—assessing financial, environmental, and social factors—guides material selection and can support sustainable decision-making, as does performance-based specifications that enable sustainable technologies to be incorporated into airport pavement. The study also proposed a consequence-based implementation hierarchy to facilitate responsible adoption of waste materials in airside pavements. The outcomes of this review will assist airport managers and pavement designers to implement practical changes to achieve more sustainable rigid airport pavements in the future. Full article
