The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants highlights the urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies, particularly entry inhibitors that could efficiently prevent viral infection. Medicinal herbs and herbal combination formulas have long been recognized for their effects in treating infectious diseases and their antiviral properties, thus providing abundant resources for the discovery of antiviral candidates. While many candidates have been suggested to have antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 infection, few have been validated for their mechanisms, including possible effects on viral entry. This study aimed to identify SARS-CoV-2 entry inhibitors from medicinal herbs and herbal formulas that are known for heat-clearing and detoxifying properties and/or antiviral activities. A SARS-CoV-2 pseudoparticle (SARS-CoV-2pp) system was used to assess mechanism-specific entry inhibition. Our results showed that the methanol extract of Anemarrhena asphodeloides rhizome, as well as the water extracts of Cimicifuga foetida rhizome, Xiao Chai Hu Tang (XCHT), and Sheng Ma Ge Gen Tang (SMGGT), have substantial inhibitory effects on the entry of SARS-CoV-2pps into host cells. Given the observation that Cimicifuga foetida exhibited the most potent inhibition and is a constituent of SMGGT, we further investigated the major compounds of the herb and identified caffeic acid as a bioactive component for blocking SARS-CoV-2pp entry. Entry inhibition of Cimicifuga foetida and caffeic acid was validated on both wild-type and the currently dominant JN.1 strain SARS-CoV-2pp systems. Moreover, caffeic acid was able to both inactivate the pseudoparticles and prevent their entry into pretreated host cells. The results support the traditional use of these herbal medicines and underscore their potential as valuable resources for identifying active compounds and developing therapeutic entry inhibitors for the management of COVID-19. Forest volume is an important information for assessing the economic value and carbon sequestration capacity of forest resources and serves as a key indicator for energy flow and biodiversity. Although remote sensing technology is applied to estimate volume, optical remote sensing data have limitations in capturing forest vertical height information and may suffer from reflectance saturation. While LiDAR data can provide more detailed vertical structural information, they come with high processing costs and limited observation range. Therefore, improving the accuracy of volume estimation through multi-source data fusion has become a crucial challenge and research focus in the field of forest remote sensing. In this study, we integrated Sentinel-2 multispectral data, Resource-3 stereoscopic imagery, UAV-based LiDAR data, and field survey data to quantitatively estimate the forest volume in Saihanwula Nature Reserve, located in Inner Mongolia, China, on the southern part of Daxing’anling Mountains. The study evaluated the performance of multi-source remote sensing features by using recursive feature elimination (RFE) to select the most relevant factors and applied four machine learning models—multiple linear regression (MLR), k-nearest neighbors (kNN), random forest (RF), and gradient boosting regression tree (GBRT)—to develop volume estimation models. The evaluation metrics include the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and relative root mean square error (rRMSE). The results show that (1) forest Canopy Height Model (CHM) data were strongly correlated with forest volume, helping to alleviate the reflectance saturation issues inherent in spectral texture data. The fusion of CHM and spectral data resulted in an improved volume estimation model with R2 = 0.75 and RMSE = 8.16 m3/hm2, highlighting the importance of integrating multi-source canopy height information for more accurate volume estimation. (2) Volume estimation accuracy varied across different tree species. For Betula platyphylla, we obtained R2 = 0.71 and RMSE = 6.96 m3/hm2; for Quercus mongolica, R2 = 0.74 and RMSE = 6.90 m3/hm2; and for Populus davidiana, R2 = 0.51 and RMSE = 9.29 m3/hm2. The total forest volume in the Saihanwula Reserve ranges from 50 to 110 m3/hm2. (3) Among the four machine learning models, GBRT consistently outperformed others in all evaluation metrics, achieving the highest R2 of 0.86, lowest RMSE of 9.69 m3/hm2, and lowest rRMSE of 24.57%, suggesting its potential for forest biomass estimation. In conclusion, accurate estimation of forest volume is critical for evaluating forest management practices and timber resources. While this integrated approach shows promise, its operational application requires further external validation and uncertainty analysis to support policy-relevant decisions. The integration of multi-source remote sensing data provides valuable support for forest resource accounting, economic value assessment, and monitoring dynamic changes in forest ecosystems. The construction industry is a major consumer of raw materials and a significant contributor to environmental emissions. Life cycle assessment (LCA) using digital models is a valuable tool for conducting a science-based analysis to reduce these impacts. However, transferring data from environmental product declarations (EPDs) to BIM for the purpose of sustainability assessment requires significant resources for its interpretation and integration. This study is founded on a comprehensive review of the scientific literature and standards, an analysis of published digital EPDs, and a thorough evaluation of IFC (industry foundation classes), identifying twenty gaps for the automated incorporation of LCA data from construction products into BIM. The identified limitations were assessed using the digital model of a building pilot, applying simplifications to incorporate actual EPD data. This paper presents the identified barriers to the automated incorporation of digital EPDs into BIM, and proposes eleven concrete actions to improve IFC 4.3. While prior studies have analyzed the environmental data in IFC, this research is significant in two key areas. Firstly, it focuses on the direct machine interpretation of environmental information without human intervention. Secondly, it is intended to be directly applicable to a revision of the IFC standards. Full article

Hydrotreated ester and fatty acids to jet (HEFA-tJ) is presently the most developed and economically attractive pathway to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). An ongoing systematic study of the critical variables of different pathways to SAF has revealed significantly lower greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction potential for the HEFA-tJ pathway compared to competing markets using the same resources for road diesel production. Moderate yield variations between air and road pathways lead to several hundred thousand tons less GHG reduction per project, which is generally not evaluated thoroughly in standard environmental assessments. This work demonstrates that, although the HEFA-tJ market seems to have more attractive features than biodiesel/renewable diesel, considerable viability risks might manifest as HEFA-tJ fuel market integration rises. The need for more transparent data and effort in this regard, before envisaging making decisions regarding the volume of HEFA-tJ production, is emphasized. Overall, reducing the carbon intensity of road diesel appears to be less capital-intensive, less risky, and several times more efficient in reducing GHG emissions. Full article

Road networks are essential for access, resource distribution, and population evacuation during natural events. These challenges are pronounced in rural areas, where network redundancy is limited and communities may have social disparities. While traditional risk management systems often focus on the physical consequences of hazard events alone, specialized literature increasingly suggests the development of a more comprehensive approach for risk assessment, where not only physical aspects associated with infrastructure, such as damage level or disruptions, but also the social and economic attributes of the affected population are considered. Consequently, this paper proposes a Vulnerability Access Index (VAI) to support road network decision-making that integrates the social vulnerability of rural communities exposed to natural events, their accessibility to nearby critical infrastructure, and physical risk. The research methodology considers (i) the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) calculation based on socioeconomic variables, (ii) Importance Index estimation (Iimp) to evaluate access to critical infrastructure, (iii) VAI calculation combining SVI and Iimp, and (iv) application to a case study in the influence area of the Villarrica volcano in southern Chile. The results show that when incorporating social variables and accessibility, infrastructure criticality varies significantly compared to the infrastructure criticality assessment based solely on physical risk, modifying the decision-making regarding road infrastructure robustness and resilience improvements. Using waste biomass as a raw material for the combined production of electricity and heat offers corresponding energy, economic, environmental and resource efficiency benefits. The study examines both the performance of a system for combined energy production based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) utilizing wood biomass and the market interest in its deployment within Bulgaria. Its objective is to propose a technically and economically viable solution for the recovery of waste biomass through the combined production of electricity and heat while simultaneously assessing the readiness of industrial and municipal sectors to adopt such systems. The cogeneration plant incorporates an ORC module enhanced with three additional economizers that capture residual heat from flue gases. Operating on 2 t/h of biomass, the system delivers 1156 kW of electric power and 3660 kW of thermal energy, recovering an additional 2664 kW of heat. The overall energy efficiency reaches 85%, with projected annual revenues exceeding EUR 600,000 and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of over 5800 t/yr. These indicators can be achieved through optimal installation and operation. When operating at a reduced load, however, the specific fuel consumption increases and the overall efficiency of the installation decreases. The marketing survey results indicate that 75% of respondents express interest in adopting such technologies, contingent upon the availability of financial incentives. The strongest demand is observed for systems with capacities up to 1000 kW. However, significant barriers remain, including high initial investment costs and uneven access to raw materials. The findings confirm that the developed system offers a technologically robust, environmentally efficient and market-relevant solution, aligned with the goals of energy independence, sustainability and the transition to a low-carbon economy. The level of participation and performance of water user associations (WUAs) in drained and irrigated areas is influenced by many factors. This paper aims to identify the main challenges to the functioning and performance of these associations in Poland and Ukraine using the methodology of international comparative analysis. We examined legal, organizational, and financial framework of WUAs performance in Poland and Ukraine based on selected case study areas. The results of the study indicate that creation of WUAs in both countries can be assessed as beneficial for sustainable water development in general. However, it is found that the actions intended to bring benefits can actually exacerbate the problem of drought and water shortages. Research shows that the lack of complete documentation on the layout of the drainage networks plays a huge constraint factor that can lead to problems with controlling the reconstruction of drainage networks and significant deterioration of water relations. Another significant problem is the restriction of the scope of WUA activities in Poland to those types of actions subsidized by the state, while lacking financial resources for other necessary activities. Background and Objectives: The uric acid to HDL-cholesterol ratio (UHR) has recently emerged as a promising biomarker reflecting systemic inflammation and metabolic disturbances. Elevated liver transaminases are clinical indicators of hepatic injury and underlying metabolic dysfunction. Many Middle Eastern countries face constrained clinical and laboratory resources, where access to comprehensive diagnostic tools may be limited. In such settings, identifying simple and easily accessible markers could offer significant practical value in detecting and monitoring health disorders. This study investigates the potential association between UHR and elevated liver transaminases levels in the Saudi general population. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 9618 subjects, and the association between the UHR and elevated liver transaminases, alanine transaminase (ALT), and aspartate transaminase (AST), was comprehensively analysed. In addition, the study assessed risk indicators including the prevalence ratio (PR) and odds ratio (OR) as well as the diagnostic accuracy of UHR and C-reactive protein (CRP) in detecting liver transaminases abnormalities, with analyses stratified by age and gender. Results: UHR was significantly elevated in subjects with increased ALT and AST activities, and this pattern was consistent across all age and gender categories. High UHR was significantly associated with elevated ALT (OR = 2.32, 95% CI: 2.12–2.53, p < 0.001) and AST (OR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.25–1.52, p < 0.001), with stronger associations observed in males and for ALT activity. In addition, elevated UHR was more prevalent among individuals with increased liver transaminase activities. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that UHR outperformed CRP in identifying elevated liver transaminases, with better discriminative ability for ALT than AST activity. Conclusions: These findings highlight a significant association between UHR and liver transaminase abnormalities in the general population, underscoring the potential utility of UHR as a simple and accessible indicator for liver function assessment in clinical settings. With the advance of digital transformation, the assessment of the environmental impact of digital tools and technologies grows more relevant. Considering the inflated expectations of environmental responsibility in higher education, this study analyses how websites of Polish universities conform to sustainable web design criteria. The sustainability audit employed a methodology encompassing carbon emissions measurement, technical website analysis, and SEO evaluation. The author analysed 63 websites of public universities in Poland using seven independent audit tools, including an original AI Custom GPT agent preconfigured in the ChatGPT ecosystem. The results revealed a substantial differentiation in CO2 emissions and website optimisation, with an average EcoImpact Score of 66.41/100. Nearly every fourth website exhibited a significant carbon footprint and excessive component sizes, which indicates poor asset optimisation and energy-intensive design techniques. The measurements exposed considerable variability in emission intensities and resource intensity among the university websites, suggesting the need for standardised digital sustainability practices. Regulations on the carbon footprint of public institutions’ websites and mobile applications could become vital strategic components for digital climate neutrality. Promoting green hosting, “Green SEO” practices, and sustainability audits could help mitigate the environmental impact of digital technologies and advance sustainable design standards for the public sector. The proposed auditing methodology can effectively support the institutional transition towards sustainable management of digital infrastructure by integrating technical, sustainability, and organisational aspects. With deepening global higher education reforms, outcome-based education has emerged as the core paradigm for teaching model innovation. This study investigates the structural dependencies and teaching effectiveness of the Environmental Design curriculum at Hubei Engineering University in medium-sized cities, China, addressing challenges of enrollment decline and market contraction critical for urban sustainability. Using network analysis, we construct curriculum support and contribution networks and course temporal networks to assess structural dependencies and teaching effectiveness, revealing structural patterns and optimizing the OBE-based Environmental Design curriculum to enhance educational quality and student competencies. Analysis reveals computer basic courses as knowledge transmission hubs, creating a course network with a distinct core–periphery structure. Technical course reforms significantly outperform theoretical course reforms in improving student performance metrics, such as higher average scores, better grade distributions, and reduced performance gaps, while innovative practice courses show peripheral isolation patterns, indicating limited connectivity with core curriculum modules, which reduces their educational impact. These findings provide empirical insights for curriculum optimization, supporting urban sustainable development through enhanced professional talent cultivation equipped to address environmental challenges like sustainable design practices and resource-efficient urban planning. Network analysis applications introduce innovative frameworks for curriculum reform strategies. Future research expansion through larger sample validation will support urban sustainable development goals and enhance professional talent cultivation outcomes. Full article

The mining industry (MI) in mineral-rich regions is pivotal for economic growth but is challenged by significant pollution and emissions. This study examines Guangxi, a representative region in China, in light of the country’s “Dual Carbon” goals. We quantified carbon emissions from the MI from 2005 to 2021, employing the generalized Divisia index method (GDIM) to analyze the factors driving these emissions. Additionally, a system dynamics (SD) model was developed, integrating economic, demographic, energy, environmental, and policy variables to assess decarbonization strategies and the potential for carbon decoupling. The key findings include the following: (1) Carbon accounting analysis reveals a rising emission trend in Guangxi’s MI, predominantly driven by electricity consumption, with the non-ferrous metal mining sector contributing the largest share of total emissions. (2) The primary drivers of carbon emissions were identified as economic scale, population intensity, and energy intensity, with periodic fluctuations in sector-specific drivers necessitating coordinated policy adjustments. (3) Scenario analysis showed that the Emission Reduction Scenario (ERS) is the only approach that achieves a carbon peak before 2030, indicating that it is the most effective decarbonization pathway. (4) Between 2022 and 2035, carbon decoupling from total output value is projected to improve under both the Energy-Saving Scenario (ESS) and ERS, achieving strong decoupling, while the resource extraction shows limited decoupling effects often displaying an expansionary connection. CareCoach seeks to enhance self-efficacy in family caregivers of people living with dementia and has been feasibility tested in a multicentre randomised controlled trial. The intervention offers two face-to-face sessions with a trained coach and access to an online platform with nine modules. This paper reports findings from an embedded qualitative process evaluation assessing implementation from the implementer’s (‘coach’s’) (n = 8) perspective using individual interviews and implementer group discussions. Qualitative data were transcribed verbatim, inductively coded and analysed using Normalisation Process Theory. Implementers demonstrated (1) ‘Coherence’ by seeking to understand how CareCoach compared to current practice, highlighting the importance of supporting coaches to differentiate and identify boundaries between their new ‘coach role’ and usual practice; (2) ‘Cognitive Participation’ by reviewing training and resources to understand their role own responsibilities and facilitate delivery of coaching sessions; group supervision and peer support were also emphasised; (3) ‘Collective Action’ through interactions with carers to deliver key behavioural aspects such as goal setting, problem solving, and providing feedback; and (4) ‘Reflexive Monitoring’ by appraising the intervention to gain useful insights that could facilitate refinement of CareCoach training and delivery. This study provides a theoretically informed understanding of the implementation of CareCoach for caregivers of people living with dementia and provides recommendations to enhance training for coaches, intervention delivery and carer engagement. Some of nuclear power’s primary detractors are the unique environmental challenges and impacts of radioactive wastes generated during fuel cycle operations. Key benefits of spent fuel reprocessing (SFR) are reductions in primary high active waste (HAW) masses, volumes, and lengths of radiotoxicity at the expense of secondary waste generation and high capital and operational costs. By employing advanced waste management and resource recovery concepts in SFR beyond the existing standard PUREX process, such as minor actinide and fission product partitioning, these challenges could be mitigated, alongside further reductions in HAW volumes, masses, and duration of radiotoxicity. This work assesses various current and proposed SFR and fuel cycle options as base cases, with further options for fission product partitioning of the high heat radionuclides (HHRs), rare earths, and platinum group metals investigated. A focus on primary waste outputs and the additional energy that could be generated by the reprocessing of high-burnup PWR fuel from Gen III(+) reactors using a simple fuel cycle model is used; the effects of 5- and 10-year spent fuel cooling times before reprocessing are explored. We demonstrate that longer cooling times are preferable in all cases except where short-lived isotope recovery may be desired, and that the partitioning of high-heat fission products (Cs and Sr) could allow for the reclassification of traditional raffinates to intermediate level waste. Highly active waste volume reductions approaching 50% vs. PUREX raffinate could be achieved in single-target partitioning of the inactive and low-activity rare earth elements, and the need for geological disposal could potentially be mitigated completely if HHRs are separated and utilised. Background/Objectives: Strengthening antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) programs is an invaluable intervention in the ongoing efforts to contain the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), particularly in low-resource settings. This study evaluates the impact of the Telementoring, Education, and Advocacy Collaboration initiative for Health through Antimicrobial Stewardship (TEACH AMS), which uses the virtual Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) learning model to enhance AMS capacity in Kenya, Ghana, and Malawi. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used, which included attendance data collection, facility-level assessments, post-session and follow-up surveys, as well as focus group discussions. Results: Between September 2023 and February 2025, 77 virtual learning sessions were conducted, engaging 2445 unique participants from hospital-based AMS committees and health professionals across the three countries. Participants reported significant knowledge gain, and data showed facility improvements in two core AMS areas, including the implementation of multidisciplinary ward-based interventions/communications and enhanced monitoring of antibiotic resistance patterns. Along those lines, participants reported that the program assisted them in improving prescribing and culture-based treatments, and also evidence-informed antibiotic selection. The evidence of implementing ward-based interventions was further stressed in focus group discussions, as well as other strengthened practices like point-prevalence surveys, and development or revision of stewardship policies. Substantial improvements in microbiology services were also shared by participants, particularly in Malawi. Other practices mentioned were strengthened multidisciplinary communication, infection prevention efforts, and education of patients and the community. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that a virtual case-based learning educational intervention, providing structured and tailored AMS capacity building, can drive behavior change and strengthen healthcare systems in low resource settings. Future efforts should aim to scale up the engagements and sustain improvements to further strengthen AMS capacity. Full article

Sensitivity and Specificity of a Revised Version of the TRACK-MS Screening Battery for Early Detection of Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

Background/Objectives: Cognitive impairment is one of the most common and debilitating clinical features of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Neuropsychological assessment, however, is time-consuming and requires personal resources, so, due to limited resources in daily clinical practice, information on cognitive profiles is often lacking, despite its high prognostic relevance. Time-saving and effective tools are required to bridge this gap. This study evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of a revised version of TRACK-MS (TRACK-MS-R), a recently published screening tool to identify cognitive impairment in MS in a fast and reliable way, offering a balance between efficiency and diagnostic yield for the individual patient. Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, 102 MS patients and 94 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC) completed an extensive neuropsychological assessment, including TRACK-MS-R, to test for cognitive processing speed (Symbol Digit Modalities Test, SDMT) and verbal fluency (Regensburger Word Fluency Test, RWT). Sensitivity of TRACK-MS-R was assessed by using the BICAMS-M battery as a reference, and specificity was determined by comparing MS patients to HC. Results: TRACK-MS-R demonstrated high sensitivity (97.44%) when compared to the gold standard as represented by BICAMS-M for early and accurately detecting cognitive impairment in MS patients. Additionally, as a potential cognitive marker, TRACK-MS-R showed a specificity of 82.98% in distinguishing MS patients from healthy controls. Conclusions: TRACK-MS-R proves to be a highly sensitive and time-efficient screening tool for detecting cognitive impairment in patients with MS, while demonstrating good specificity compared to HC. Whereas high sensitivity is a prerequisite for a valid screening tool, its relatively modest specificity compared to BICAMS-M (62.9%) calls for caution in interpreting standalone results but instead indicates more extensive neuropsychological testing. Its briefness and diagnostic accuracy support its implementation in routine clinical practice, particularly in time-constrained settings. Full article
