Periodic visual inspections are currently conducted to maintain the condition of railway bridges. These inspections rely on direct visual assessments by human inspectors, often requiring specialized equipment such as aerial ladders. However, this method is not only time-consuming and costly but also involves significant safety risks. Therefore, there is a growing need for a more efficient and reliable alternative to traditional visual inspections of railway bridges. In this study, we evaluated and compared the performance of damage detection using U-Net-based deep learning models on images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The target damage types include cracks, concrete spalling and delamination, water leakage, exposed reinforcement, and paint peeling. To enable multi-class segmentation, the U-Net model was trained using three different loss functions: Cross-Entropy Loss, Focal Loss, and Intersection over Union (IoU) Loss. We compared these methods to determine their ability to distinguish actual structural damage from environmental factors and surface contamination, particularly under real-world site conditions. The results showed that the U-Net model trained with IoU Loss outperformed the others in terms of detection accuracy. When applied to field inspection scenarios, this approach demonstrates strong potential for objective and precise damage detection. Furthermore, the use of UAVs in the inspection process is expected to significantly reduce both time and cost in railway infrastructure maintenance. Future research will focus on extending the detection capabilities to additional damage types such as efflorescence and corrosion, aiming to ultimately replace manual visual inspections of railway bridge surfaces with deep-learning-based methods. In this study, an effective strengthening method was investigated to improve the seismic performance of masonry brick walls. The strengthening method comprised the use of shotcrete, which was applied in both glass fiber-reinforced and unreinforced forms for steel plates and tie rods. Thirteen wall specimens constructed with vertical perforated masonry block bricks were tested under diagonal compression in accordance with ASTM E519 (2010). Reinforcement plates with different thicknesses (1.5 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm) were anchored using 6 mm diameter tie rods. A specially designed steel frame and an experimental loading program with controlled deformation increments were employed to simulate the effects of reinforced concrete beam frame system on walls under the effect of diagonal loads caused by seismic loads. In addition, numerical simulations were conducted using three-dimensional finite element models in Abaqus Explicit software to validate the experimental results. The findings demonstrated that increasing the number of tie rods enhanced the shear strength and overall behavior of the walls. Steel plates effectively absorbed tensile stresses and limited crack propagation, while the fiber reinforcement in the shotcrete further improved wall strength and ductility. Overall, the proposed strengthening techniques provided significant improvements in the seismic resistance and energy absorption capacity of masonry walls, offering practical and reliable solutions to enhance the safety and durability of existing masonry structures. This study evaluates the rheological behavior and mechanical performance of Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) mixes with varying superplasticizer dosages, aiming to optimize their use in pavement rehabilitation overlays on sloped surfaces. A reference self-compacting UHPFRC mix was modified by reducing the superplasticizer-to-binder ratio in incremental steps, and the resulting mixes were assessed through rheometry, mini-Slump, and Abrams cone tests. Key rheological parameters—static and dynamic yield stress, plastic viscosity, and thixotropy—were determined using the modified Bingham model. The results showed that reducing superplasticizer content increased yield stress and viscosity, enhancing thixotropic behavior while maintaining ultra-high compressive (≥130 MPa) and flexural strength (≥20 MPa) at 28 days. A predictive model was validated to estimate the critical yield stress needed for overlays on slopes. Among the evaluated formulations, the SP-2 mix met the stability and performance criteria and was successfully tested in a prototype overlay, demonstrating its viability for field application. This research confirms the potential of rheology-tailored UHPFRC as a high-performance solution for durable and stable pavement overlays in demanding geometric conditions. Full article

The growing disposal of used tyres and plastic waste in landfills poses a significant environmental challenge. This study investigates the potential of utilizing used tyre rubber and macro-synthetic fibres (MSFs) made from recycled plastics in fibre-reinforced rubberized concrete (RuFRC). Various percentages of tyre rubber shreds were used to replace coarse aggregates, calculated as 10%, 20%, and 30% of the volume of fine aggregates; fibre dosages (0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% by volume) were incorporated into the mix, and a series of physical, mechanical, and durability properties were evaluated. The results show that, as the fibre and rubber content increased, the slump of RuFRC decreased, with the lowest value obtained for concrete with 1% fibre and 30% rubber. The density of RuFRC decreases as the rubber percentage increases due to air voids and increased porosity caused by the rubber. The strength properties of RuFRC were found to decline with the increase in the rubber content, with mixes containing 30% rubber exhibiting reductions of about 60% in compressive strength, 27% in tensile strength, and 13% in flexural strength compared to the control specimen. Durability testing revealed that an increased rubber content led to higher water absorption, water penetration, and chloride ion permeability, with 30% rubber showing the highest values. However, lower rubber content (10%) and higher fibre dosages improved the durability characteristics, with water absorption reduced by up to 5% and shrinkage strains lowered by about 7%, indicating better compaction and bonding. These results indicate that RuFRC with moderate rubber and higher fibre content offers a promising balance between sustainability and performance. Full article

This study presents a comparison of the mechanical properties of selected high-performance concrete mixtures, some of which contained a proportion of recycled concrete aggregate (15% or 30%) as a substitute for natural aggregate. A reference mixture without recycled concrete aggregate was used for comparison. Initially, the properties of concrete containing both the natural and recycled aggregate types were characterized. This was followed by a series of mechanical tests investigating the compressive strength, flexural strength, and chemical resistance (including resistance to de-icing agents and sulfuric acid). The structural performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams produced from the mixtures was assessed, and surface morphology was evaluated using a digital microscope. The results confirmed that the use of recycled aggregate had a measurable yet limited effect on the properties of hardened concrete. While the compressive strength tended to decrease slightly with an increasing degree of replacement, the flexural strength remained stable in all the mixtures. The tested mixtures demonstrated adequate resistance to de-icing agents and sulfuric acid. Interestingly, specimens subjected to a frost-resistance test showed improved flexural strength, potentially due to ongoing hydration or microcrack healing. In addition, the RC beams with partial aggregate replacement achieved a higher load-bearing capacity compared to the reference beams. The optical surface evaluation method proved to be a valuable tool, complementary to conventional strength testing. This research enhances the current understanding of recycled aggregate concrete and supports its potential for structural applications. Full article

Aiming at the lightweight design of a bridge-shed integration structure, this paper presents a three-layered absorbing system in which a part of the sand cushion is replaced by expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam and the reinforced concrete (RC) protective slab is arranged above the sand cushion to enhance the composite system’s safety. A three-dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics–Finite Element Method (SPH-FEM) coupled numerical model is developed in LS-DYNA (Livermore Software Technology Corporation, Livermore, CA, USA, version R13.1.1), with its validity rigorously verified. The dynamic response of rockfall impacts on the shed slab with composite cushions of various thicknesses is analyzed by varying the thickness of sand and EPS materials. To optimize the cushion design, a specific energy dissipation ratio (SEDR), defined as the energy dissipation rate per unit mass (η/M), is introduced as a key performance metric. Furthermore, the complicated interactional mechanism between the rockfall and the optimum-thickness composite system is rationally interpreted, and the energy dissipation mechanism of the composite cushion is revealed. Using logistic regression, the ultimate stress state of the reactive powder concrete (RPC) slab is methodically analyzed, accounting for the speed and mass of the rockfall. The results are indicative of the fact that the composite cushion not only has less dead weight but also exhibits superior impact resistance compared to the 90 cm sand cushions; the impact resistance performance index SEDR of the three-layered absorbing system reaches 2.5, showing a remarkable 55% enhancement compared to the sand cushion (SEDR = 1.61). Additionally, both the sand cushion and the RC protective slab effectively dissipate most of the impact energy, while the EPS material experiences relatively little internal energy build-up in comparison. This feature overcomes the traditional vulnerability of EPS subjected to impact loads. One of the highlights of the present investigation is the development of an identification model specifically designed to accurately assess the stress state of RPC slabs under various rockfall impact conditions. For the first time, comprehensive investigations into the tensile load-bearing behavior and crack formation of reinforced concrete based on ultrasound are presented. Uniaxial tensile tests are performed on reinforced concrete tension members equipped with embedded ultrasonic transducers. Key mechanical parameters across all ranges of tensile behavior are continuously quantified by recording ultrasonic signals and evaluated with coda wave interferometry. The investigations include member configurations of different lengths to cover different numbers of cracks. For reference, crack patterns and crack widths are analyzed using digital image correlation, while the strain in the reinforcement is monitored with distributed fiber optic sensors. For the first time, a direct proportional relationship between the relative velocity change in ultrasonic signals and crack widths is established in the ranges of crack formation and stabilized cracking. In the non-cracked state, linear correlations are found between the velocity change and the average strain, as well as the length of the specimens. The experimental results significantly enhance the general understanding of the phenomena related to ultrasonic signals in flexural reinforced concrete members, particularly concerning cracking in the tensile zone. Consequently, this study contributes to the broader objective of employing coda wave interferometry to evaluate the condition of infrastructure. Full article

Openings in two-way reinforced concrete (RC) slabs are frequently incorporated for architectural and functional purposes, such as providing pathways for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services. While necessary, these openings can significantly compromise the structural performance of slabs, particularly by reducing their capacity to resist punching shear, an effect that is especially critical when the openings are located near column–slab connections. This paper provides a detailed review of the existing research, examining how various opening parameters such as their size, shape, and position affect key structural performance metrics including their stiffness, ductility, and failure modes. The findings highlight that opening geometry is a major determinant of a slab’s overall behavior. Notably, the proximity of openings to column faces is identified as a critical factor that can substantially influence the extent of strength degradation and failure mechanisms. Furthermore, this review identifies a significant research gap concerning the behavior of slabs with openings under non-standard loading conditions, such as seismic activity, blasts, and impact loads. It also emphasizes the need for further investigation into the long-term performance of such slabs under adverse environmental influences, including elevated temperatures, corrosion, and material degradation. By consolidating the current knowledge and identifying unresolved challenges, this review aims to guide engineers and researchers in developing more robust design strategies and performance-based solutions for RC slabs with openings, ultimately contributing to safer and more resilient structural systems. The resilience concept is well established in engineering, but the quantitative studies of vessel impact resilience for bridge structures remain limited. This paper presents an integrated framework for assessing vessel impact resilience under combined rebar corrosion and vessel collision effects. First, a corroded reinforced concrete bridge is considered for nonlinear static analysis to quantify initial corrosion damage and for nonlinear dynamic analysis to evaluate post-impact function loss. Then, recovery for each damage state is modeled by using both negative exponential and triangular recovery functions to estimate restoration times and to obtain a vessel impact resilience index. The results show that increasing corrosion severity markedly reduces resilience capacity. Furthermore, resilience indices obtained from the negative exponential function generally exceed those from the triangular function, and this improvement becomes more significant at lower resilience levels. Resilience indices calculated by using negative exponential and triangular recovery functions show negligible differences when the concrete bridge is in the uncorroded initial state and the vessel impact velocity is below 1.5 m/s. However, as reinforcement corrosion increases, the maximum discrepancy between these two recovery functions also increases, reaching a value of 67% at a corrosion level of 15.0%. From the numerical results obtained from a case study, it is important to select an appropriate recovery model when assessing vessel impact resilience. For rapid initial restoration followed by slower long-term recovery, the negative exponential model yields greater resilience gains compared to the triangular model. The proposed method thus provides an effective tool for engineers and decision makers to evaluate and improve the vessel impact resilience of aging bridges under the combined corrosion and impact effects. This proposes a quantitative metric for resilience-based condition assessment and maintenance planning. Full article

Concrete mix design plays a pivotal role in ensuring the mechanical performance, durability, and sustainability of construction projects. However, the nonlinear interactions among the mix components challenge traditional approaches in predicting compressive strength and optimizing proportions. This study presents a two-stage hybrid framework that integrates deep learning with reinforcement learning to overcome these limitations. First, a Convolutional Neural Network–Long Short-Term Memory (CNN–LSTM) model was developed to capture spatial–temporal patterns from a dataset of 1030 historical concrete samples. The extracted features were enhanced using an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) meta-model to improve generalizability and noise resistance. Then, a Dueling Double Deep Q-Network (Dueling DDQN) agent was used to iteratively identify optimal mix ratios that maximize the predicted compressive strength. The proposed framework outperformed ten benchmark models, achieving an MAE of 2.97, RMSE of 4.08, and R2 of 0.94. Feature attribution methods—including SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), Elasticity-Based Feature Importance (EFI), and Permutation Feature Importance (PFI)—highlighted the dominant influence of cement content and curing age, as well as revealing non-intuitive effects such as the compensatory role of superplasticizers in low-water mixtures. These findings demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach to support intelligent concrete mix design and real-time optimization in smart construction environments. Full article

In high geothermal tunnels (>28 °C), curing temperature critically affects early-age concrete mechanics and durability. Uniaxial compression tests under six curing conditions, combined with CT scanning and machine learning-based crack analysis, were used to evaluate the impacts of curing age, temperature, and fiber content. The test results indicate that concrete exhibits optimal development of mechanical properties under ambient temperature conditions. Specifically, the elastic modulus increased by 33.85% with age in the room-temperature group (RT), by 23.35% in the fiber group (F), and decreased by 26.75% in the varying-temperature group (VT). A Weibull statistical damage-based constitutive model aligned strongly with the experimental data (R2 > 0.99). Fractal analysis of CT-derived cracks revealed clear fractal characteristics in the log(Nr)–log(r) curves, demonstrating internal damage mechanisms under different thermal histories. Full article

This paper reports a statistical analysis of a database archiving information on the strengths of the materials in existing Italian bridges having pre- and post-tensioned concrete beams. Data were collected in anonymous form by analyzing a stock of about 170 bridges built between 1960 and 2000 and located in several Italian regions. To date, the database refers to steel reinforcing bars, concrete, and prestressing steel, whose strengths were gathered from design nominal values, acceptance certificates, and in situ test results, all derived by consulting the available documents for each examined bridge. At first, this paper describes how the available data were collected. Then, the results of a statistical analysis are presented and commented on. Moreover, goodness-of-fit tests are carried out to verify the assumption validity of a normal distribution for steel reinforcing bars and prestressing steel, and a log-normal distribution for concrete. The database represents a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners for the assessment of existing bridges. It may be applied for the use of prior knowledge within a framework where Bayesian methods are included for reducing uncertainties. The database provides essential information on the strengths of the materials to be used for a simulated design and/or for verification in the case of limited knowledge. Goodness-of-fit tests make the collected information very useful, even if probabilistic methods are applied. Full article

In this study, steel fibers were used to improve the mechanical properties of high-strength self-compacting concrete (HSSCC), and its effect on the fracture mechanical properties was investigated by a three-point bending test with notched beams. Coupled with the digital image correlation (DIC) technique, the fracture process of steel-fiber-reinforced HSSCC was analyzed to elucidate the reinforcing and fracture-resisting mechanisms of steel fibers. The results indicate that the compressive strength and flexural strength of HSSCC cured for 28 days exhibited an initial decrease and then an enhancement as the volume fraction (Vf) of steel fibers increased, whereas the flexural-to-compressive ratio linearly increased. All of them reached their maximum of 110.5 MPa, 11.8 MPa, and 1/9 at 1.2 vol% steel fibers, respectively. Steel fibers significantly improved the peak load (FP), peak opening displacement (CMODP), fracture toughness (KIC), and fracture energy (GF) of HSSCC. Compared with HSSCC without steel fibers (HSSCC-0), the FP, KIC, CMODP, and GF of HSSCC with 1.2 vol% (HSSCC-1.2) increased by 23.5%, 45.4%, 11.1 times, and 20.1 times, respectively. The horizontal displacement and horizontal strain of steel-fiber-reinforced HSSCC both increased significantly with an increasing Vf. HSSCC-0 experienced unstable fracture without the occurrence of a fracture process zone during the whole fracture damage, whereas the fracture process zone formed at the notched beam tip of HSSCC-1.2 at its initial loading stage and further extended upward in the beams of high-strength self-compacting concrete with a 0.6% volume fraction of steel fibers and HSSCC-1.2 as the load approaches and reaches the peak. The aim of this paper is to present the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) specimens subjected to an accelerated corrosion process using impressed current in the presence of chloride ions. The corrosion of the rebars was carried out using three current densities (50, 100, and 200 µA/cm2) and various exposure times. The experimental results characterised the internal degradation of the RC specimens through measurement of the corrosion product thicknesses at the steel–concrete interface; the widths, lengths and orientations of internal concrete cracks; and the external concrete crack widths. In addition, numerical modelling of the corroded RC specimens was conducted to describe the crack patterns. The comparison between the experimental and numerical results demonstrated a high degree of correlation, providing insights into the degradation process of RC specimens due to corrosion. Full article

Because artificially cemented granular (ACG) materials employ diverse combinations of aggregates and binders—including cemented soil, low-cement-content cemented sand and gravel (LCSG), and concrete—their stress–strain responses vary widely. In LCSG, the binder dosage is typically limited to 40–80 kg/m3 and the sand–gravel skeleton is often obtained directly from on-site or nearby excavation spoil, endowing the material with a markedly lower embodied carbon footprint and strong alignment with current low-carbon, green-construction objectives. Yet, such heterogeneity makes a single material-specific constitutive model inadequate for predicting the mechanical behavior of other ACG variants, thereby constraining broader applications in dam construction and foundation reinforcement. This study systematically summarizes and analyzes the stress–strain and volumetric strain–axial strain characteristics of ACG materials under conventional triaxial conditions. Generalized hyperbolic and parabolic equations are employed to describe these two families of curves, and closed-form expressions are proposed for key mechanical indices—peak strength, elastic modulus, and shear dilation behavior. Building on generalized plasticity theory, we derive the plastic flow direction vector, loading direction vector, and plastic modulus, and develop a concise, transferable elastoplastic model suitable for the full spectrum of ACG materials. Validation against triaxial data for rock-fill materials, LCSG, and cemented coal–gangue backfill shows that the model reproduces the stress and deformation paths of each material class with high accuracy. Quantitative evaluation of the peak values indicates that the proposed constitutive model predicts peak deviatoric stress with an error of 1.36% and peak volumetric strain with an error of 3.78%. The corresponding coefficients of determination R2 between the predicted and measured values are 0.997 for peak stress and 0.987 for peak volumetric strain, demonstrating the excellent engineering accuracy of the proposed model. The results provide a unified theoretical basis for deploying ACG—particularly its low-cement, locally sourced variants—in low-carbon dam construction, foundation rehabilitation, and other sustainable civil engineering projects.
