Media organizations are experiencing ongoing transformation, increasingly driven by the advancement of AI technologies. This development has begun to link journalists with generative systems and synthetic technologies. Although newsrooms worldwide are exploring AI adoption to improve information sourcing, news production, and distribution, a gap exists between resource-rich organizations and those with limited means. Since ChatGPT 3.5 was released on 30 November 2022, Greek media and journalists have gained the ability to use and explore AI technology. In this study, we examine the use of AI in Greek newsrooms, as well as journalists’ reflections and concerns. Through qualitative analysis, our findings indicate that the adoption and integration of these tools in Greek newsrooms is marked by the lack of formal institutional policies, leading to a predominantly self-directed and individualized use of these technologies by journalists. Greek journalists engage with AI tools both professionally and personally, often without organizational guidance or formal training. This issue may compromise the quality of journalism due to the absence of established guidelines. Consequently, individuals may produce content that is inconsistent with the media outlet’s identity or that disseminates misinformation. Age, gender, and newsroom roles do not constitute limiting factors for this “experimentation”, as survey participants showed familiarity with this technology. In addition, in some cases, the disadvantages of specific tools regarding qualitative results in Greek are inhibiting factors for further exploration and use. All these points to the need for immediate training, literacy, and ethical frameworks. Full article

Background: Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is highly susceptible to various abiotic stresses during their growth and development, leading to severe reductions in both yield and quality. β-Glucosidase (BGLU) is widely involved in plant growth and development, as well as in the response to abiotic stress. Methods: We performed a genome-wide identification of pepper BGLU (CaBGLU) genes. Phylogenetic analysis included BGLU proteins from Arabidopsis, tomato, and pepper. Gene structures, conserved motifs, and promoter cis-elements were analyzed bioinformatically. Synteny within the pepper genome was assessed. Protein-protein interaction potential was predicted. Gene expression patterns were analyzed across tissues and under abiotic stresses using transcriptomic data and qRT-PCR. Subcellular localization of a key candidate protein CaBGLU21 was confirmed experimentally. Results: We identified 32 CaBGLU genes unevenly distributed across eight chromosomes. Phylogenetic classification of 99 BGLU proteins into 12 subfamilies revealed an uneven distribution of CaBGLUs across six subfamilies. Proteins within subfamilies shared conserved motifs and gene structures. CaBGLU promoters harbored abundant light-, hormone- (MeJA, ABA, SA, GA), and stress-responsive elements (including low temperature). A duplicated gene pair (CaBGLU19/CaBGLU24) was identified. 27 CaBGLU proteins showed potential for interactions. Expression analysis indicated CaBGLU5 and CaBGLU30 were mesophyll-specific, while CaBGLU21 was constitutively high in non-leaf tissues. CaBGLU21 was consistently upregulated by cold, heat, and ABA. Subcellular localization confirmed CaBGLU21 resides in the tonoplast. Conclusions: This comprehensive analysis characterizes the pepper BGLU gene family. CaBGLU21, exhibiting constitutive expression in non-leaf tissues, strong upregulation under multiple stresses, and tonoplast localization, emerges as a prime candidate gene for further investigation into abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms in pepper. The findings provide a foundation for future functional studies and stress-resistant pepper breeding. Full article

As an energy-intensive industry, the aviation sector’s carbon emissions have drawn significant attention. Against the backdrop of the “dual carbon” goals, how to enhance the carbon emission efficiency of airlines has become an urgent issue to be addressed for both industry development and low-carbon targets. This paper constructs an evaluation system for the carbon emission efficiency of airlines and uses the SBM-DDF model under the global production possibility set, combined with the bootstrap-DEA method, to calculate the efficiency values. On this basis, the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method is employed to analyze the synergistic effects of multiple influencing factors in three dimensions: economic benefits, transportation benefits, and energy consumption on improving carbon emission efficiency. The research findings reveal that, first, a single influencing factor does not constitute a necessary condition for achieving high carbon emission efficiency; second, there are four combinations that enhance carbon emission efficiency: “load volume-driven type”, “scale revenue-driven type”, “high ticket price + technology-driven type”, and “passenger and cargo synergy mixed type”. These discoveries are of great significance for promoting the construction of a carbon emission efficiency system by Chinese airlines and achieving high-quality development in the aviation industry. Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial consumption (AMC) surveillance and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) constitute effective strategies to combat the increasing antimicrobial resistance rates worldwide. Post-Soviet countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan) implemented various elements of AMC surveillance and AMS to different extents. The limited quantity and quality of data from post-Soviet countries make it difficult to assess health system performance; therefore, this region is a blind spot in global AMR monitoring. This systematic review assesses and characterises AMC surveillance and AMS implementation in post-Soviet countries. Methods: Evidence was compiled via a search in PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase, CyberLeninka, and Scopus. The eligibility criteria included AMC surveillance- and AMS-related papers in human health within defined regions and timelines. Some literature from the official websites of international and national health organisations was included in the search. Results: As a result of the searches, screening, and critical appraisal, three peer-reviewed publications and 31 documents were selected for analysis. Eleven out of fifteen countries with updated national action plans for combating antimicrobial resistance have defined AMC surveillance and AMS as strategic objectives. All 15 examined countries submitted antimicrobial consumption data to international networks and reported the existence of approved laws and regulations on antibiotic sales. However, disparities exist in the complexity of monitoring systems and AMS implementation between high-income and low-income countries in the region. Conclusions: This review provides key insights into the existing AMC surveillance and AMS implementation in former Soviet countries. Although the approach of this review lacks quantitative comparability, it provides a comprehensive qualitative framework for national-level AMC surveillance and AMS system assessment. Full article

In alignment with global educational trends, Australia has adopted a pluralistic approach to initial teacher education (ITE), encompassing traditional university-based programs, employment-integrated models and vocational training routes. This diversification of pathways has emerged as a strategic response to persistent workforce challenges, including chronic shortages, uneven distribution of qualified educators, and limited demographic diversity within the profession. Rather than supplanting conventional ITE models, these alternative pathways serve as complementary options, broadening access and enhancing system responsiveness to evolving societal and educational needs. The rise in non-traditional routes represents a deliberate response to the well-documented global teacher shortage, frequently examined in comparative educational research. Central to their design is a restructuring of traditional program elements, particularly duration and delivery methods, to facilitate more flexible and context-sensitive forms of teacher preparation. Such approaches often create opportunities for individuals who may be excluded from conventional pathways due to socioeconomic constraints, geographic isolation, or non-linear career trajectories. Significantly, the diversity introduced by alternative entry candidates has the potential to enrich school learning environments. These educators often bring a wide range of prior experiences, disciplinary knowledge, and cultural perspectives, contributing to more inclusive and representative teaching practices. The implications for student learning are substantial, particularly in disadvantaged communities where culturally and professionally diverse teachers may enhance engagement and academic outcomes. From a policy perspective, the development of flexible, multifaceted teacher education pathways constitutes a critical component of a sustainable workforce strategy. As demand for qualified teachers intensifies, especially in STEM disciplines and in rural, regional and remote areas, the role of alternative pathways is likely to become increasingly pivotal in achieving broader goals of equity, quality and innovation in teacher preparation. Coronary artery disease (CAD) constitutes a major contributor to morbidity, mortality and healthcare burden worldwide. Recent innovations in imaging modalities, pharmaceuticals and interventional techniques have revolutionized diagnostic and treatment options, necessitating the reevaluation of established drug protocols or the consideration of newer alternatives. The utilization of beta blockers (BBs) in the setting of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), shifting from the pre-reperfusion to the thrombolytic and finally the primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) era, has become increasingly more selective and contentious. Nonetheless, the extent of myocardial necrosis remains a key predictor of outcomes in this patient population, with large trials establishing the beneficial use of beta blockers. Computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) has emerged as a highly effective diagnostic tool for delineating the coronary anatomy and atheromatous plaque characteristics, with the added capability of MESH-3D model generation. Induction and preservation of a low heart rate (HR), regardless of the underlying sequence, is of critical importance for high-quality results. Landiolol is an intravenous beta blocker with an ultra-short duration of action (t1/2 = 4 min) and remarkable β1-receptor specificity (β1/β2 = 255) and pharmacokinetics that support its potential for systematic integration into clinical practice. It has been increasingly recognized for its importance in both acute (primarily studied in STEMI and, to a lesser extent, NSTEMI pPCI) and chronic (mainly studied in elective PCI) CAD settings. Given the limited literature focusing specifically on landiolol, the aim of this narrative review is to examine its pharmacological properties and evaluate its current and future role in enhancing both diagnostic imaging quality and therapeutic outcomes in patients with CAD. Tomatoes are globally esteemed not only for their nutritional value but also for their complex and appealing aroma, a key determinant of consumer preference. The present study aimed to comprehensively characterise the volatilomic fingerprints of three tomato species—Solanum lycopersicum L., S. lycopersicum var. cerasiforme, and S. betaceum—encompassing six distinct varieties, through the application of headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS). A total of 55 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) spanning multiple chemical classes were identified, of which only 28 were ubiquitously present across all varieties examined. Carbonyl compounds constituted the predominant chemical family, with hexanal and (E)-2-hexenal emerging as putative key contributors to the characteristic green and fresh olfactory notes. Notably, esters were found to dominate the unique volatile fingerprint of cherry tomatoes, particularly methyl 2-hydroxybenzoate, while Kumato and Roma varieties exhibited elevated levels of furanic compounds. Multivariate statistical analyses, including principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), demonstrated clear varietal discrimination and identified potential aroma-associated biomarkers such as phenylethyl alcohol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, hexanal, (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-nonenal, and heptanal. Collectively, these findings underscore the utility of volatilomic fingerprint as a robust tool for varietal identification and quality control within the food industry. Full article

Background: The management of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is undergoing a paradigm shift, with increasing emphasis on kidney transplantation as a preferred treatment modality for elderly patients (≥65 years), who constitute a substantial portion of new ESRD cases. Transplantation offers markedly superior survival and quality of life (QoL) advantages compared to dialysis for this demographic. Nevertheless, key determinants such as frailty, physical functionality, and cognitive function have emerged as critical predictors of post-transplant success. Despite their relevance, standardized methodologies for evaluating these parameters in transplantation candidacy remain absent. This systematic review examines the influence of frailty, physical functionality, and cognitive function on outcomes in elderly kidney transplant recipients. Methods: Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, a rigorous literature search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and the Web of Science for studies published up to October 31, 2024. Relevant studies focused on elderly transplant candidates and examined correlations between frailty, physical functionality, or cognitive function and post-transplant outcomes. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale was employed to evaluate studies quality. Results: Seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Five explored physical functionality, demonstrating that better pre-transplant physical performance predicts enhanced survival. Two studies addressed frailty, utilizing the Fried frailty phenotype, and linked frailty to elevated mortality and diminished QoL recovery. Notably, no studies explored cognitive function in elderly kidney transplant candidates or recipients and its association with post-transplant outcomes, exposing a salient gap in the literature. The included studies’ varied methodologies, reliance on single time-point assessments, and exclusive focus on kidney transplant recipients restrict both comparability among studies and the generalizability of findings to the broader end-stage renal disease (ESRD) population. Conclusions: These findings underscore the profound impact of physical functionality and frailty on transplant outcomes in the growing elderly kidney transplant population, illuminating the necessity for standardized assessment protocols and targeted pre-transplant interventions. The critical gap in cognitive function research underscores a vital direction for future investigation. This research received no external funding. While significant progress has been made in controlling point source pollution, agricultural non-point source pollution (AGNPSP) has emerged as a major contributor to global water pollution, posing a severe threat to ecological quality. According to China’s Second National Pollution Source Census, AGNPSP constitutes a substantial proportion of water pollution, making its mitigation a critical challenge. Identifying AGNPSP risk zones is essential for targeted management and effective intervention. This study focuses on Yongchuan District, a representative hilly–mountainous area in the Yangtze River Basin. Applying the landscape ecology “source–sink” theory, we selected seven natural factors influencing AGNPSP and constructed a minimum cumulative resistance model using remote sensing post-processing data. An attempt was made to classify the “source” and “sink” landscapes, and ultimately conduct a risk assessment of AGNPSP in Yongchuan District, identifying the key areas for AGNPSP control. Key findings include: 1. Vegetation coverage is the most significant natural factor affecting AGNPSP. 2. Extremely high- and high-risk zones cover 90% of Yongchuan, primarily concentrated in the central and southern regions, indicating severe AGNPSP pressure that demands urgent management. 3. The levels of ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus in the typical sections are related to the risk levels of the corresponding sections. Consequently, the risk level of AGNPSP directly correlates with the pollutant concentrations measured in the sections. This study provides a robust scientific basis for AGNPSP risk assessment and targeted control strategies, offering valuable insights for pollution management in Yongchuan and similar regions. This study focuses on a profound paradox in eco-hotel evaluations: why do consumer ratings for location, a static asset, exhibit dynamic fluctuations? To solve this puzzle, we construct a two-stage signal-processing theoretical framework that integrates Signaling Theory and the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). This framework posits that the dynamic trajectory of a hotel’s green attributes (encompassing eco-facilities, sustainable practices, and ecological experiences) constitutes a high-fidelity market signal about its underlying quality. We utilized natural language processing techniques (Word2Vec and LSA) to conduct a longitudinal analysis of over 60,000 real consumer reviews from Booking.com between 2020 and 2023. This study confirms that continuous improvements in green attributes result in significant positive spillovers to location scores, while any degradation triggers strong negative spillovers. More critically, consumer environmental involvement (CEI) acts as an amplifier in this process, with high-involvement consumers reacting more intensely to both types of signals. The research further uncovers complex non-linear threshold characteristics in the spillover effect, subverting traditional linear management thinking. These findings not only provide a dynamic and psychologically deep theoretical explanation for sustainable consumption behavior but also offer forward-thinking practical implications for hoteliers on how to strategically manage dynamic signals to maximize brand value. We studied the compositional and diversity patterns of Odonates in total, and separately for the two suborders (Zygoptera, Anisoptera) in relation to geographic and ecological parameters at the riparian zone of four rivers and one canal within the Axios Delta National Park and the Natura 2000 SAC GR1220002 in northern Greece, using the line transect technique. In total, 6252 individuals belonging to 28 species were identified. The compositional and diversity patterns were significantly different between agricultural and natural sites. Odonata assemblages at croplands were comparatively poorer, dominated by a few, widely distributed, taxonomically proximal species, tolerant to environmental changes, as a result of modifications and consequent alterations of abiotic conditions at croplands, which also led to higher local contribution to β-diversity and species turnover. The absence of several percher, endophytic, and threatened species from agricultural sites led to significantly lower diversity, as a result of environmental filtering due to ecophysiological restrictions. Taxonomic and functional diversity, uniqueness, and Dragonfly Biotic Index (DBI) were significantly higher in riparian forests, due to the sensitivity of damselflies to dehydration, and the avoidance of habitat loss and extreme temperatures by dragonflies, which prefer natural shelters near the ecotone. The newly introduced Conservation Value Index (CVI) revealed 21 conservation hotspots of Odonata (14 at canopy cover sites), widely distributed within the borders of NATURA 2000 SAC GR1220002. Background and Objectives: Acute respiratory failure (ARF) represents an increasingly relevant clinical challenge in older subjects due to population aging and the high prevalence of cardiopulmonary comorbidities. Non-invasive ventilation (NIV), developed as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP), has become a first-line treatment in various forms of ARF, including acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema (ACPE) and acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD), offering several clinical advantages. In this context, the limited evidence on the efficacy of NIV in older patients leaves considerable uncertainty as to whether it constitutes a valid therapeutic option or represents medical futility in these patients. Materials and Methods: This narrative review explores the use of NIV and its outcomes in four key clinical scenarios in the elderly: ARF due to ACPE, AECOPD, community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and palliative/end-of-life care. Results: Strong evidence supports NIV use with improved outcomes in ACPE and AECOPD, even in older populations. Conversely, data on its use in pneumonia are inconclusive, with potential harm if applied inappropriately. In palliative care, NIV can help relieve symptoms, but if not used appropriately, it may extend suffering. Conclusions: Age alone does not appear to be a sufficient factor to determine whether or not to use NIV; it becomes relevant only when considered in conjunction with the purpose of its use and the patient’s clinical history and condition. Data remain limited and often conflicting, particularly when investigating the elderly population and patients with a “do not intubate” (DNI) order. There is a need for additional research on these patients, focusing on long-term outcomes and quality of life. Full article

Indoor radon constitutes a public health issue in various regions across the United States as the second leading cause of lung cancer following tobacco smoke. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises radon mitigation interventions for residential buildings with indoor radon concentrations exceeding the threshold level of 4 pCi/L. Despite considerable research assessing the technical effectiveness of radon mitigation systems, there remains a gap in understanding their broader influence on occupant behavior and preferences in residential design. This study aims to investigate the impact of residing in radon-mitigated homes within the Commonwealth of Kentucky—an area known for elevated radon concentrations—on occupants’ preferences regarding healthy home design attributes. The objectives of this research are twofold: firstly to determine if living in radon-mitigated homes enhances occupant awareness and consequently influences their preferences toward health-related home attributes and secondly to quantitatively evaluate and compare the relative significance homeowners assign to health-related attributes such as indoor air quality, thermal comfort, and water quality relative to conventional attributes including home size, architectural style, and neighborhood quality. The overarching purpose is to explore the potential role radon mitigation initiatives may play in motivating occupants towards healthier home construction and renovation practices. Using choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis, this paper compares preferences reported by homeowners from radon-mitigated homes against those from non-mitigated homes. While the findings suggest a relationship between radon mitigation and increased preference for indoor air quality, the cross-sectional design limits causal interpretation, and the possibility of reverse causation—where health-conscious individuals are more likely to seek mitigation—must be considered. The results provide novel insights into how radon mitigation efforts might effectively influence occupant priorities towards integrating healthier design elements in residential environments. Face-to-face interaction is one of the most natural forms of human communication. Unsurprisingly, Video Conferencing (VC) Applications have experienced a significant rise in demand over the past decade. With the widespread availability of cellular devices equipped with high-resolution cameras, Instant Messaging Video Call Applications (IMVCAs) now constitute a substantial portion of VC communications. Given the multitude of IMVCA options, maintaining a high Quality of Experience (QoE) is critical. While content providers can measure QoE directly through end-to-end connections, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) must infer QoE indirectly from network traffic—a non-trivial task, especially when most traffic is encrypted. In this paper, we analyze a large dataset collected from WhatsApp IMVCA, comprising over 25,000 s of VC sessions. We apply four Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and a Large Multimodal Model (LMM)-based agent, achieving mean errors of 4.61%, 5.36%, and 13.24% for three popular QoE metrics: BRISQUE, PIQE, and FPS, respectively. Assessing the Tolerance of Spotted Longbarbel Catfish as a Candidate Species for Aquaculture to Ammonia Nitrogen Exposure

The spotted longbarbel catfish, Hemibagrus guttatus, a nationally protected Class II species in China, faces increasing threats from habitat degradation. Recently, the spotted longbarbel catfish has gained attention as a promising aquaculture species, not only for its premium flesh quality but also for its potential role in conservation through sustainable captive breeding programs. Ammonia nitrogen (ammonia-N) is a ubiquitous byproduct of intensive farming and serves as the primary environmental stressor confronting aquatic species. Elucidating the ammonia-N tolerance of spotted longbarbel catfish constitutes a critical prerequisite for its successful domestication, which is the aim of this study. We demonstrate that ammonia-N stress significantly decreases the survival rate of spotted longbarbel catfish and induces tissue damage, including gill lamella proliferation, hepatocyte blurring, and renal necrosis. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that ammonia-N stress promotes the expression of genes related to endoplasmic reticulum stress, heat-shock proteins, immune response, and apoptosis, while inhibiting antioxidant-related genes and Wnt-related genes. Enzymatic assays indicate that ammonia-N stress inhibits the activities of multiple antioxidant enzymes, including SOD, CAT, GSH, GSH-Px, and T-AOC. Microbiome analysis showed that ammonia-N stress altered the intestinal microbial community by increasing harmful bacteria (e.g., Vibrio and Aeromonas) and suppressing beneficial bacteria (e.g., Cetobacterium and Lactococcus). These findings highlight the comprehensive negative impacts of ammonia-N on the health of the spotted longbarbel catfish and provide a theoretical basis for optimizing aquaculture conditions to support the sustainable protection and domestication of the spotted longbarbel catfish.
