Optimizing Urban Mobility Through Complex Network Analysis and Big Data from Smart Cards

Urban public transportation systems face increasing pressure from shifting travel patterns, rising peak-hour demand, and the need for equitable and resilient service delivery. While complex network theory has been widely applied to analyze transit systems, limited attention has been paid to behavioral segmentation within such networks. This study introduces a frequency-based framework that differentiates high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) passengers to examine how distinct user groups shape network structure, congestion vulnerability, and robustness. Using over 20 million smart-card records from Beijing’s multimodal transit system, we construct and analyze directed weighted networks for HF and LF users, integrating topological metrics, temporal comparisons, and community detection. Results reveal that HF networks are densely connected but structurally fragile, exhibiting lower modularity and significantly greater efficiency loss during peak periods. In contrast, LF networks are more spatially dispersed yet resilient, maintaining stronger intracommunity stability. Peak-hour simulation shows a 70% drop in efficiency and a 99% decrease in clustering, with HF networks experiencing higher vulnerability. Based on these findings, we propose differentiated policy strategies for each user group and outline a future optimization framework constrained by budget and equity considerations. This study contributes a scalable, data-driven approach to integrating passenger behavior with network science, offering actionable insights for resilient and inclusive transit planning. Full article

Excess Commuting in Rural Minnesota: Ethnic and Industry Disparities

Research on commuting patterns has mainly focused on urban and metropolitan areas, and such studies are not typically applied to rural and small-town regions, where workers often face longer commutes due to limited job opportunities and inadequate public transportation. By using the Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) data, this research fills that gap by analyzing commuting behavior by ethnic group and industry in south-central Minnesota, which is a predominantly rural area of 13 counties in the United States. The results show that both white and minority groups in District 7 experienced an increase in excess commuting from 2006 to 2016, with the minority group in Nobles County showing a significantly higher rise. Analysis by industry reveals that excess commuting in the leisure and hospitality sector (including arts, entertainment, and food services) in Nobles County increased five-fold during this time, indicating a severe spatial mismatch between jobs and affordable housing. In contrast, manufacturing experienced a decline of 50%, possibly indicating better commuting efficiency or a loss of manufacturing jobs. These findings can help city and transportation planners conduct an in-depth analysis of rural-to-urban commuting patterns and develop potential solutions to improve rural transportation infrastructure and accessibility, such as promoting telecommuting and hybrid work options, expanding shuttle routes, and adding more on-demand transit services in rural areas. Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) and Group Rapid Transit (GRT) are classes of fully automated public transport systems, where passengers can travel in small vehicles on an interconnected, grade-separated network of guideways, non-stop, from origin to destination. PRT and GRT are considered sustainable as they are low-emission and able to attract car drivers. The parameterized cost modeling framework developed in this paper has the advantage that profitability of different PRT/GRT systems can be rapidly verified in a transparent way and in function of a variety of relevant system parameters. This framework may contribute to a more transparent, rapid, and low-cost evaluation of PRT/GRT schemes for planning and decision-making purposes. The main innovation is the introduction of the “peak hour network saturation” S: the number of vehicles in circulation during peak hour divided by the maximum number of vehicles running at line speed with minimum time headways. It is an index that aggregates the main uncertainties in the planning process, namely the demand level relative to the supply level. Furthermore, a maximum S can be estimated for a PRT/GRT project, even without a detailed demand estimation. The profit per trip is analytically derived based on S and a series of more certain parameters, such as fares, capital and maintenance costs, daily demand curve, empty vehicle share, and physical properties of the system. To demonstrate the ability of the framework to analyze profitability in function of various parameters, we apply the methods to a single vehicle PRT, a platooned PRT, and a mixed PRT/GRT. The results show that PRT services with trip length proportional fares could be profitable already for S>0.25. The PRT capacity, profitability, and robustness to tripled infrastructure costs can be increased by vehicle platooning or GRT service during peak hours. Full article

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are increasingly pivotal for reducing carbon emissions in supply chain management (SCM); however, research exploring their combined potential from a sustainability perspective remains fragmented. This study aims to systematically map the research landscape and synthesize evidence on the applications, benefits, and challenges. Methods: A systematic scoping review was conducted on 23 peer-reviewed studies from the Scopus database, published between 2013 and 2024. Data were systematically extracted and analyzed for publication trends, application domains (e.g., transportation, warehousing), specific AI and robotic technologies, emissions reduction strategies, and implementation challenges. Results: The analysis reveals that AI-driven logistics optimization is the most frequently reported strategy for reducing transportation emissions. At the same time, robotic automation is commonly associated with improved energy efficiency in warehousing. Despite these benefits, the reviewed literature consistently identifies significant barriers, including the high energy demands of AI computation and complexities in data integration. Conclusions: This review confirms the transformative potential of AI and robotics for developing low-carbon supply chains. An evidence-based framework is proposed to guide practical implementation and identify critical gaps, such as the need for standardized validation benchmarks, to direct future research and accelerate the transition to sustainable SCM. Urban population growth is intensifying pressure on mobility systems, with road transportation contributing to environmental and sustainability challenges. Policymakers must navigate complex uncertainties in addressing rising mobility demand while pursuing sustainability goals. Advanced technologies offer promise, but their real-world effectiveness in urban contexts remains underexplored. This meta-review comprised three complementary studies: a broad analysis of sustainable mobility with Norwegian case studies, and systematic literature reviews on digital twins and Big Data/AI applications in urban mobility, covering the period of 2019–2024. Using structured criteria, we synthesised findings from 72 relevant articles to identify major trends, limitations, and opportunities. The findings show that mobility policies often prioritise technocentric solutions that unintentionally hinder sustainability goals. Digital twins show potential for traffic simulation, urban planning, and public engagement, while machine learning techniques support traffic forecasting and multimodal integration. However, persistent challenges include data interoperability, model validation, and insufficient stakeholder engagement. We identify a hierarchy of mobility modes where public transit and active mobility outperform private vehicles in sustainability and user satisfaction. Integrating electrification and automation and sharing models with data-informed governance can enhance urban liveability. We propose actionable pathways leveraging Big Data and AI, outlining the roles of various stakeholders in advancing sustainable urban mobility futures. Full article

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis comparing the implementation of electric and diesel buses for public transport services in the low-density area of the City of Jastrebarsko in Croatia. It utilizes a multidimensional approach and incorporates direct and indirect costs, such as vehicle acquisition, operation, charging, maintenance, and environmental impact costs during the lifecycle of the buses. The results show that, despite the higher initial investment in electric buses, these vehicles offer savings, especially when coupled with significantly reduced emissions of pollutants, which decreases indirect costs. However, local contexts differ, leading to a need to revise whether or not a municipality can finance the procurement and operations of such a fleet. The paper utilizes a robust methodological framework, integrating a proposal based on real-world data and demand and combining it with predictive analytics to forecast long-term benefits. The findings of the paper support the introduction of buses as a sustainable solution for Jastrebarsko, which provides insights for public transport planners, urban planners, and policymakers, with a discussion about the specific issues regarding the introduction, procurement, and operations of buses of different propulsion in a low-density area. The energy transition toward greater electrification leads to incentives in public transportation fed by catenary-powered networks. In this context, emerging technological devices such as in-motion-charging vehicles and electric vehicle charging points are expected to be operated while connected to trolleybus networks as part of new electrification projects, resulting in a significant demand for power. To enable a significant increase in electric transportation without compromising technical compliance for voltage and current at grid systems, the implementation of stationary battery energy storage systems (BESSs) can be essential for new electrification projects. A key challenge for BESSs is the selection of the optimal converter topology for charging their batteries. Ideally, the chosen converter should offer the highest efficiency while minimizing size, weight, and cost. In this context, a modular dual-active-bridge converter, considering its operation as a full-power converter (FPC) and a partial-power converter (PPC) with module-shedding control, is analyzed in terms of operation efficiencies and thermal behavior. The goal is to clarify the advantages, disadvantages, challenges, and trade-offs of both power-processing techniques following future trends in the electric transportation sector. The results indicate that the PPC achieves an efficiency of 98.58% at the full load of 100 kW, which is 1.19% higher than that of FPC. Additionally, higher power density and cost effectiveness are confirmed for the PPC. Full article

With the rapid advancement of urbanization, the increasing demand and insufficient supply of public service facilities for children have become urgent problems requiring resolution. This study employs the Shannon diversity index, the location entropy, spatial autocorrelation, and the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of children’s public service facilities in the central urban area of Shenyang. The findings of the study are as follows: (1) There are significant differences in the spatial distribution of children’s public service facilities. Higher quantity distribution and diversity index are observed in the core area and Hunnan District compared to the peripheral areas. The Gini coefficient of various facilities is below the fair threshold of 0.4, but 90.32% of the study units have location entropy values below 1, indicating a supply–demand imbalance. (2) The spatial distribution of various facilities exhibits significant clustering characteristics, with distinct differences between high-value and low-value cluster patterns. (3) The spatial distribution of facilities is shaped by four factors: population, transportation, economy, and environmental quality. Residential area density and commercial service facility density emerge as the primary positive drivers, whereas road density and average housing price act as the main negative inhibitors. (4) The mechanisms of influencing factors exhibit spatial heterogeneity. Positive driving factors exert significant effects on new urban areas and peripheral zones, while negative factors demonstrate pronounced inhibitory effects on old urban areas. Non-linear threshold effects are observed in factors such as subway station density and public transport station density. Full article

The integration of shared autonomous vehicles into historic urban areas presents both opportunities and challenges. In heritage-rich environments like very old Asian (such as Suzhou old town, which serves as a use case example) or European (especially Mediterranean coastal cities) areas—characterized by narrow alleys, dense development, and sensitive cultural landscapes—shared autonomous vehicle adoption raises critical spatial and social questions. This study employs a qualitative, user-centered approach based on the ripple model to examine residents’ perceptions across four dimensions: residential patterns, parking land use, regional accessibility, and street-level infrastructure. Semi-structured interviews with 27 participants reveal five key findings: (1) public trust depends on transparent decision-making and safety guarantees; (2) shared autonomous vehicles may reshape generational residential clustering; (3) the short-term parking demand remains stable, but the long-term reuse of space is feasible; (4) shared autonomous vehicles could enhance accessibility in historic cores; (5) transport systems may evolve toward intelligent, human-centered designs. Based on these insights, the study proposes three strategies: (1) transparent risk assessment using explainable artificial intelligence and digital twins; (2) polycentric development to diversify land use; (3) hierarchical street retrofitting to balance mobility and preservation. While this study is limited by its qualitative scope and absence of simulation, it offers a framework for culturally sensitive, small-scale interventions supporting sustainable mobility transitions in historic urban contexts. Ride-pooling (RP) services, in which passengers with similar destinations share a ride, offer considerable potential for enhancing urban mobility by bridging gaps in public transportation (PT) networks and providing a convenient alternative to private car use. For the effective design and operation of such services, a detailed understanding of user preferences and usage patterns is essential. This study investigates differences in RP preferences and usage between day and night (with nighttime defined as 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.), drawing on both a stated choice experiment (SCE) and revealed preference data collected in Mannheim, Germany. The focus lies on the local RP service fips, which is integrated into the PT system. The SCE, conducted in 2024 with 566 participants, was analyzed using a nested logit model. The analysis of the SCE reveals that nighttime preferences for RP are characterized by reduced sensitivity to travel time and cost, creating an opportunity for RP operators to optimize stop network designs during nighttime hours by increasing pooling rates. In addition, it indicates a greater likelihood of private car usage at night, especially among women, likely due to safety concerns and limited PT availability. The analysis of revealed preference data provides a complementary perspective. It shows that the RP nighttime service primarily attracts younger users, while many respondents report not being active on weekend nights. However, the combination of low public awareness and limited service availability, evidenced by rejected booking requests, suggests that existing demand is not being fully captured. This implies that low usage is not merely the result of low demand, but also of structural barriers on both the supply and information side. Overcoming these barriers through targeted information campaigns and expansion of nighttime service capacity could substantially enhance sustainable urban travel options during nighttime. Climate change, the consequences of which have been more intense than ever in the last few decades, makes the need for sustainable transportation even more imperative. The promotion of public transportation and the discouragement of private car use are among the main priorities of sustainable transport planning in modern urban areas. However, the selection of the most appropriate transport project, apart from significant opportunities, is also accompanied by significant challenges, especially under the demand of compromising—often conflicting—social, environmental, and economic criteria, as well as different stakeholders’ interests. The aim of the present paper is to provide decision analysts and policy-makers with a decision-support tool for the prioritization and optimum selection of public transport projects for an urban area within the framework of sustainability. For this purpose, a comprehensive inventory of criteria for the evaluation of urban public transport systems (alternatives), along with a standardized table with the relevant performance of the most common alternatives (i.e., metro, tram, monorail, and BRT) are provided based on international literature review. A multi-criteria decision-aiding methodology based on TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), allowing for the direct exclusion of an alternative not meeting certain “binding” criteria from further evaluation, thus saving time, effort and cost, taking into account different stakeholders’ interests and preferences, as well as the particularities and special characteristics of the study area, is then proposed and tested through a theoretical case study. Beyond Traditional Public Transport: A Cost–Benefit Analysis of First and Last-Mile AV Solutions in Periurban Environment

With the advent of Autonomous Vehicles (AV) technology, extensive research around the design of on-demand mobility systems powered by such vehicles is performed. An important part of these studies consists in the evaluation of the economic impact of such systems for involved stakeholders. In this work, a cost–benefit analysis (CBA) is applied to the introduction of AV services in Paris-Saclay, an intercommunity, south of Paris, simulated through MATSim, an agent-based model capable of capturing complex travel behaviors and dynamic traffic interactions. AVs would be implemented as a feeder service, first- and last-mile service to public transit, allowing intermodal trips for travelers. The system is designed to target the challenges of public transport accessibility in periurban areas and high private car use, which the AV feeder service is designed to mitigate. To our knowledge, this study is one of the first CBA analyses of an intermodal AV system relying on an agent-based simulation. The introduction of AV in a periurban environment would generate more pressure on the road network (0.8% to 1.7% increase in VKT for all modes, and significant congestion around train stations) but would improve traveler utilities. The utility gains from the new AV users benefiting from a more comfortable mode offsets the longer travel times from private car users. A Stop-Based routing service generates less congestion than a Door-to-Door routing service, but the access/egress time counterbalances this gain. Finally, in a periurban environment where on-demand AV feeder service would be added to reduce the access and egress cost of public transit, the social impact would be nuanced for travelers (over 99% of gains captured by the 10% of most benefiting agents), but externality would increase. This would benefit some travelers but would also involve additional congestion. In that case, a Stop-Based routing on a constrained network (e.g., existing bus network) significantly improves economic viability and reduces infrastructure costs and would be less impacting than a Door-to-Door service. This study presents “eflips-X”, a modular, open-source simulation framework that integrates energy consumption modeling, battery-aware block building, depot–block assignment, terminus charger placement, depot operations simulation, and smart charging optimization within a unified workflow. The framework employs empirical energy models, graph-based scheduling algorithms, and integer linear programming for depot assignment and smart charging. Applied to Berlin’s bus network—Germany’s largest—three scenarios were evaluated: maintaining existing blocks with electrification, exclusive depot charging, and small batteries with extensive terminus charging. Electric fleets need 2.1–7.1% additional vehicles compared to diesel operations, with hybrid depot-terminus charging strategies minimizing this increase. Smart charging reduces peak power demand by 49.8% on average, while different charging strategies yield distinct trade-offs between infrastructure requirements, fleet size, and operational efficiency. The framework enables systematic evaluation of electrification pathways, supporting evidence-based planning for zero-emission public transport transitions. Full article

This study proposes a balanced truck dispatching strategy for inter-terminal transportation (ITT) in large ports, incorporating proactive demand outsourcing to address stochastic and imbalanced ITT demand. A portion of ITT tasks are intentionally outsourced to third-party public trucks at a higher cost, so that self-owned trucks can be reserved for more critical tasks. The ITT system is modeled as a closed Jackson network, in which self-owned trucks circulate among terminals and routes. An optimization model is developed to determine the optimal proactive outsourcing ratios for origin–destination terminal pairs and the appropriate fleet size of self-owned trucks, aiming to minimize total transportation costs. Reactive outsourcing is also included to handle occasional truck shortages. A mean value analysis method is used to evaluate system performance with given decisions, and a differential evolution algorithm is employed for optimization. The case study of Shanghai Yangshan Port demonstrates that the proposed strategy reduces total system cost by 9.8% compared to reactive outsourcing. The results also highlight the importance of jointly optimizing outsourcing decisions and fleet size. This study provides theoretical insights and practical guidance for ITT system management under demand uncertainty. Full article

Optimization of a Layout for Public Toilets Based on Evaluation of Accessibility Through the Gaussian Two-Step Floating Catchment Area Approach

Urban public toilets are essential for improving urban and rural living environments. Traditional evaluations have relied on statistical indicators such as total numbers and network coverage, but have overlooked population demand, limiting their ability to reflect actual service levels and optimize spatial allocation. This study assesses the public toilet service capacity according to spatial accessibility and offers insights into layout optimization. The main urban area of Kunming was considered as the case study. First, the Gaussian two-step floating catchment area (G2SFCA) method was used to calculate public toilet accessibility. The service level of public toilets at the community scale was assessed based on the calculation results. Finally, recommendations for the optimization of the spatial layout of public toilet provision are proposed based on the evaluation findings. Results indicate that (1) 57 communities lacked access to public toilets within a 5 min walk, while only two lacked access within 20 min; all communities had access within 30 min; (2) increasing stalls in old public toilets by 50% would meet the policy requirements for most residents; (3) transportation accessibility has a significant impact on residents’ convenience in accessing public toilets. Areas with lower transportation connectivity tend to have poorer toilet accessibility. The construction of new public toilets near road networks can effectively enhance overall restroom convenience for residents in the study area. By integrating public toilet accessibility with resident restroom demand, this study proposes targeted strategies for optimizing the spatial layout of urban public toilets, offering valuable insights and feasible solutions for improving the scientific and rational allocation of urban public resources.
