When designing, implementing and assessing public policies, and, in particular, those affecting the public management of religious diversity, it is increasingly common to include ethnographic approaches from the field of social anthropology and the broader social sciences. Ethnographic practice can provide more representative and accurate perspectives on the actors, settings, and social phenomena subject to regulation. This article presents the findings of an ethnographic study on two minority religious communities, conducted by a team of anthropologists within the framework of a broader research project on religious freedom in Spain, led by jurists. Based on two case studies—the teaching of Evangelical religion in state schools and Islamic burial practices—our study analyses the implications of the varying degrees of public recognition, as well as how this recognition actually manifests in the everyday practice of religious groups within a context of religious diversity. The study also examines the barriers to the full participation of these communities in public institutions and civil society, as well as the discourses, strategies, and practices they develop to overcome these challenges. Objectives: Scarce data are available regarding preventive medicine in forcibly displaced populations especially regarding non-communicable diseases like neoplasia, while even more limited data are available on Ukrainian refugees in Romania. To address this research gap, the present analysis was performed to investigate Ukrainian refugee women’s beliefs, attitudes, and opinions towards the Romanian and Ukrainian healthcare system in a comparison model while focusing on the HPV immunization rates and factors influencing the uptake for themselves and their children. Methods: Participants were recruited using the snowball sampling method through their General Practitioner (GP) and a health mediator. Results: In total, 105 women completed the online or physical survey. The mean age was 50 years. In total, 40% of women had not been to a gynecological check-up in 3 or more years, and more than 56% had never been screened. Only four were vaccinated against HPV, and none remembered which type of vaccine was dispensed or how many doses were utilized. The primary hindrances to accessing health services or immunization programs were language barriers, financial burdens, and a lack of information. Respondents’ general distrust of health systems and healthcare workforces were recurrent themes. Relationship status, living arrangements, and previous engagement in screening practices influenced immunization rates. Perceiving the healthcare officials as proactive concerning optional vaccination programs such as HPV immunization and actively receiving recommendations drove respondents to pursue vaccination. Conclusions: This analysis offers a foundational insight into the specific needs of refugee women. It can guide the development of effective public health interventions to improve health outcomes and vaccination rates among Ukrainian refugees in Romania. Tailored preventive campaigns with adequate native language information and prompts from medical experts in designated centers should be deployed to ensure inclusive tactics for vulnerable populations. Soluble solids content (SSC) in fruits, as one of the key indicators of fruit quality, plays a critical role in postharvest quality assessment and grading. While traditional destructive methods can provide precise measurements of sugar content, they have limitations such as damaging the fruit’s integrity and the inability to perform rapid detection. In contrast, non-destructive detection technologies offer the advantage of preserving the fruit’s integrity while enabling fast and efficient sugar content measurements, making them highly promising for applications in fruit quality detection. This review summarizes recent advances in non-destructive detection technologies for fruit sugar content measurement. It focuses on elucidating the principles, advantages, and limitations of mainstream technologies, including near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR), X-ray technology, computer vision (CV), electronic nose (EN) technology and so on. Critically, our analysis identifies key challenges hindering the broader implementation of these technologies, namely: the integration and optimization of multi-technology approaches, the development of robust intelligent and automated detection systems, and issues related to high equipment costs and barriers to widespread adoption. Based on this assessment, we conclude by proposing targeted future research directions. These focus on overcoming the identified challenges to advance the development and practical application of non-destructive SSC detection technologies, ultimately contributing to the modernization and intelligentization of the fruit industry. The preparedness of healthcare workers for disaster situations depends on their technical skills, disaster knowledge, and psychosocial strength, including teamwork and emotional regulation. This study aims to assess disaster preparedness among healthcare professionals in primary healthcare centers (PHCs) in Alqurayat, Saudi Arabia, with a specific focus on evaluating technical competencies, psychosocial readiness, and predictive modeling of preparedness levels. A mixed-methods approach was employed, incorporating structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and observational data from disaster drills to evaluate the preparedness levels of 400 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and administrative staff. The results showed that while knowledge (mean: 3.9) and skills (mean: 4.0) were generally moderate to high, notable gaps in overall preparedness remained. Importantly, 69.5% of participants reported enhanced readiness following simulation drills. Machine learning models, including Random Forest and Artificial Neural Networks, were used to predict preparedness outcomes based on psychosocial variables such as emotional intelligence, teamwork, and stress management. Sentiment analysis and topic modeling of qualitative responses revealed key themes including communication barriers, psychological safety, and the need for ongoing training. The findings highlight the importance of integrating both technical competencies and psychosocial resilience into disaster management programs. This study contributes an innovative framework for evaluating preparedness and offers practical insights for policymakers, disaster planners, and health training institutions aiming to strengthen the sustainability and responsiveness of primary healthcare systems. This study analyzes the evolution of Pakistan’s energy policies from 1990 to 2024, documenting their transition from a singular focus on generation capacity to an integrated approach prioritizing renewable energy and efficiency. Through a systematic literature review of 110 initially screened studies, with 50 meeting the inclusion criteria and 22 selected for in-depth analysis, we evaluated policy effectiveness and identified implementation barriers. Our methodology employed predefined criteria focusing on energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and climate impact, utilizing the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Early policies like the National Energy Conservation Policy (1992) and the Energy Policy (1994) emphasized energy security through generation capacity expansion while largely neglecting renewable sources and efficiency improvements. The policy landscape evolved in the 2000s with the introduction of renewable energy incentives and efficiency initiatives. However, persistent challenges include short-term planning, inconsistent implementation, and fossil fuels dependence. Recent framework like the Alternative and Renewable Energy Policy (2019) and the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Plan (2020–2025) demonstrate progress toward sustainable energy practices. However, institutional, financial, and regulatory barriers continue to constrain effectiveness. We recommend that Pakistan’s energy strategy prioritize the following: (1) long-term planning horizon; (2) enhanced fiscal incentives; and (3) strengthened institutional support to meet global energy security and climate resilience standards. These measures would advance Pakistan’s sustainable energy transition while supporting both energy security and environmental objectives. Full article

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face dynamic and competitive environments where resilience and data-driven decision-making are critical. Despite the potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and optimization techniques, SMEs often struggle to adopt these tools due to high costs, limited training, and restricted hardware access. This study reviews how SMEs can employ heuristics, metaheuristics, ML, and hybrid approaches to support strategic decisions under uncertainty and resource constraints. Using bibliometric mapping with UMAP and BERTopic, 82 key works are identified and clustered into 11 thematic areas. From this, the study develops a practical framework for implementing and evaluating optimization strategies tailored to SMEs’ limitations. The results highlight critical application areas, adoption barriers, and success factors, showing that heuristics and hybrid methods are especially effective for multi-objective optimization with lower computational demands. The study also outlines research gaps and proposes future directions to foster digital transformation in SMEs. Unlike prior reviews focused on specific industries or methods, this work offers a cross-sectoral perspective, emphasizing how these technologies can strengthen SME resilience and strategic planning. The Sustainable Development Goals seek to achieve universal, adequate, and equitable access to drinking water and sanitation by the year 2030. Yet, significant and persistent disparities in water and sanitation access exist, with rural and low-income households in Sub-Saharan Africa exhibiting some of the lowest levels. This paper uses household surveys from rural villages in Zambia’s Western Province to identify, highlight, and examine spatial barriers to improved water and sanitation. Most households included in the study area drink unimproved water, including surface water, and either use unimproved sanitation facilities or practice open defecation. Access to improved water sources and improved sanitation in the study area lags behind the rest of rural Zambia. Beyond the distance to urban areas that makes piped water and sanitation expensive, the location of these villages in the Barotse Floodplain necessitates seasonal migration, which creates barriers to universal access to improved water and sanitation. Diagnosis of Performance and Obstacles of Integrated Management of Three-Water in Chaohu Lake Basin

The integration of water resources, water environment, and water ecology (hereinafter “three-water”) is essential not only for addressing the current water crisis but also for achieving sustainable development. Chaohu Lake is an important water resource and ecological barrier in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, undertaking such functions as agricultural irrigation, urban water supply, and flood control and storage. Studying the performance of “three-water” in the Chaohu Lake Basin will help to understand the pollution mechanism and governance dilemma in the lake basin. It also provides practical experience and policy references for the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yangtze River Basin. We used the DPSIR-TOPSIS model to analyze the performance of the river–lake system in the Chaohu Lake Basin and employed an obstacle model to identify factors influencing “three-water.” The results indicated that overall governance and performance of the “three-water” in the Chaohu Lake Basin exhibited an upward trend from 2011 to 2022. Specifically, the obstacle degree of driving force decreased by 19.6%, suggesting that economic development enhanced governance efforts. Conversely, the obstacle degree of pressure increased by 34.4%, indicating continued environmental stress. The obstacle degree of state fluctuated, showing a decrease of 13.2% followed by an increase of 3.8%, demonstrating variability in the effectiveness of water resource, environmental, and ecological management. Additionally, the obstacle degree of impact declined by 12.8%, implying the reduced efficacy of governmental measures in later stages. Response barriers decreased by 5.8%. Variations in the obstacle degree of response reflected differences in response capacities. Spatially, counties and districts at the origins of major rivers and their lake outlets showed lower performance levels in “three-water” management compared to other regions in the basin. Notably, Wuwei City and Feidong County exhibited better governance performance, while Feixi County and Chaohu City showed lower performance levels. Despite significant progress in water resource management, environmental improvement, and ecological restoration, further policy support and targeted countermeasures remain necessary. Counties and districts should pursue coordinated development, leverage the radiative influence of high-performing areas, deepen regional collaboration, and optimize, governance strategies to promote sustainable development. Aims: To systematically review and synthesize qualitative research exploring the Breast Cancer Survivors (BCSs)’ perception of health promotion interventions and informing strategies to mitigate recurrence risk within five years post-treatment and improve clinical outcomes. Specifically, this study addresses the question: “How do women diagnosed with breast cancer perceive health promotion interventions for recurrence prevention?” Design: A systematic review and qualitative meta-synthesis were performed. Data Sources: A systematic search of scientific databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Scopus) was undertaken in November 2024. The reference list was cross-referenced and hand-searched to identify additional articles. Review Methods: Studies were included if they met the following criteria: they were primary qualitative studies focusing on BCSs within five years post-treatment, involving participants who had completed surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy in the same time frame, as this period is critical for monitoring recurrence and implementing health promotion interventions. Only studies published in peer-reviewed journals and written in Italian, English, French, or Spanish were considered, provided that an abstract and the full text were available. Moreover, eligible studies had to be conducted in high-income or middle-income countries. Studies were excluded if they focused exclusively on advanced or metastatic breast cancer, if they involved mixed cancer populations without reporting separate data for BCSs, or if they were non-qualitative studies or gray literature. The review study protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42024626033). Results: The literature search identified 490 records, 13 articles from databases, and 3 articles identified via other methods (web and citation searching) that met inclusion criteria. A narrative synthesis approach allowed the emerging five themes: (I) Challenges, (II) Self-motivation and empowerment, (III) The relationships as a facilitator, (IV) Barriers to change, and (V) Proactive support strategies. Conclusions: Addressing internal and external factors that influence health behaviors is essential to improve adherence, reduce recurrence risk, and enhance quality of life. Tailored interventions, social support, and healthcare engagement are crucial in this effort. Impact: Our meta-synthesis highlighted significant challenges as well as valuable resources for health promotion among BCSs, suggesting practical and tailored approaches to improving the adoption of healthy behaviors, supported by relationships and targeted support strategies. Enhancing innovation capability can effectively promote the development of traditional industries. Based on Lewin’s behavioral model theory, this study investigated the relationship between industrial support policies and innovation behavior within traditional industries. Utilizing survey data collected from 152 traditional industrial enterprises in 2024 and employing structural equation modeling, the main findings are as follows: Industrial support policies can effectively alleviate the “innovation inertia” of traditional industries, with all policies being significant at the 1% confidence level. Among them, policies related to industry–university–research cooperation platforms have the most significant impact, with a standardized coefficient of 0.941, followed by fiscal and taxation policies (standardized coefficient: 0.846) and financial policies (standardized coefficient: 0.729). Innovation motivation acts as a mediating mechanism between industrial policies and innovation behavior. Industrial support policies accelerate the conversion of reserve-oriented patent portfolios into practical applications, helping to break through patent barriers and effectively alleviate innovation inertia. Consequently, the government should prioritize improving public services, and policy formulation needs to be oriented towards enhancing innovation efficiency. While ensuring industrial security, it is advisable to moderately increase competition to guide traditional industry market players towards thriving in competitive environments. Full article

The transition toward a circular water economy addresses accelerating water scarcity and pollution. A PRISMA-2020 systematic review of 50 peer-reviewed articles (January 2018–April 2024) mapped current technologies and management strategies, seeking patterns, barriers, and critical bottlenecks. Bibliometric analysis revealed the following three dominant patterns: (i) rapid diffusion of membrane bioreactors, constructed wetlands, and advanced oxidation processes; (ii) research geographically concentrated in Asia and the European Union; (iii) industry’s marked preference for by-product valorization. Key barriers—high energy costs, fragmented regulatory frameworks, and low social acceptance—converge as critical constraints during scale-up. The following three practical action lines emerge: (1) adopt progressive tariffs and targeted tax credits that internalize environmental externalities; (2) harmonize water-reuse regulations with comparable circularity metrics; (3) create multi-actor platforms that co-design projects, boosting local legitimacy. These findings provide policymakers and water-sector practitioners with a clear roadmap for accelerating Sustainable Development Goals 6, 9, and 12 through circular, inclusive, low-carbon water systems. The backbone of maritime transportation has always been the successful execution of ship operations. However, the human factor has proven to be a weak point in the system. To reduce and mitigate it, a regulatory framework and consequently a safety system for ship barriers were created and implemented with this goal in mind. The expected result of these measures was the creation of a resilient maritime transport system. Nevertheless, the available statistics show that most of the reported accidents and incidents occurred during ship operation, with the human factor as the main cause. Therefore, it is useful to investigate whether the regulatory framework can influence the safety system of ship barriers. Therefore, the objectives of the study are as follows: (a) to investigate and determine the regulatory safety requirements and the elements related to the ship barrier system, and (b) to investigate the influence of the regulatory safety requirements on the elements related to the ship barrier system. From the data obtained and the analyses performed, seven factors emerged. Four of them were related to the regulatory requirements and three to the shipboard barrier system, a basis for the presented models. Several important findings were obtained that have theoretical and practical implications and further highlight the importance and potential undesirable side effects of the provisions of the current regulatory framework. Retrieval practice, or the active recall of information from memory, is a highly effective learning strategy that strengthens memory and comprehension. This effect is robust and strongly backed by research in cognitive psychology. The health professions—including medicine, nursing, and dentistry—have widely embraced retrieval practice as a learning and study tool, particularly for course exams and high-stakes licensing exams. This state-of-the-art review examines the historical development, current applications, and future directions for the use of retrieval practice in health professions education. While retrieval-based learning has long been used informally in these fields, its formal recognition as a scientifically supported study method gained momentum in the early 2000s and then saw a surge in both research interest and curricular adoption between 2010 and 2025. This historical review explores the key factors driving this growth, such as its alignment with assessment-driven education and the increasing availability of third-party study resources that rely on retrieval practice as a guiding principle. Despite its proven benefits for learning, however, barriers persist to its adoption by students, including in the health professions. This article discusses strategies for overcoming these challenges and for enhancing retrieval practice integration into health professions curricula. Full article

Drivers and Barriers for Edible Streets: A Case Study in Oxford, UK

This study introduces Edible Streets as a distinct and scalable model of community-led urban food growing, specifically investigating the drivers and barriers to the initiative. Unlike traditional urban food-growing initiatives, Edible Streets explores the integration of edible plants into street verges and footpaths with direct community involvement of the people who live/work in a street. This study contributes new knowledge by evaluating Edible Streets through the COM-B model of behavioural change, through policy and governance in addition to behaviour change, and by developing practical frameworks to facilitate its implementation. Focusing on Oxford, the research engaged residents through 17 in-person interviews and 18 online surveys, alongside a stakeholder workshop with 21 policymakers, community leaders, and NGO representatives. Findings revealed strong motivation for Edible Streets, driven by values of sustainability, community resilience, and improved well-being. However, capability barriers, including knowledge gaps in gardening, land-use policies, and food preservation, as well as opportunity constraints related to land access, water availability, and environmental challenges, hindered participation. To address these, a How-to Guide was developed, and a pilot Edible Street project was launched. Future steps include establishing a licensing application model to facilitate urban food growing and conducting a Post-Use Evaluation and Impact Study. Nationally, this model could support Right to Grow policies, while globally, it aligns with climate resilience and food security goals. Locally grown food enhances biodiversity, reduces carbon footprints, and strengthens social cohesion. By tackling key barriers and scaling solutions, this study provides actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners to create resilient, equitable urban food systems. Full article

The Pathway Is Clear but the Road Remains Unpaved: A Scoping Review of Implementation of Tools for Early Detection of Cerebral Palsy

Background/Objectives: International guidelines recommend the combined use of the General Movement Assessment (GMA), Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to support early and accurate diagnosis of cerebral palsy (CP). However, their implementation remains inconsistent. This study aimed to map their reported global use and identify associated enablers and barriers. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following JBI and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Systematic searches were performed in PubMed, Cochrane, PEDro, ProQuest, Web of Science, and Scopus. Eligible studies were charted and thematically analyzed, focusing on tools use and implementation factors at individual, organizational, and system levels. Results: Fourteen articles (seven surveys, seven implementation studies) from seven countries met the inclusion criteria. While awareness of GMA, HINE, and MRI was generally high, routine clinical use was limited—particularly outside structured implementation initiatives. Major barriers emerged at the system level (e.g., limited training access, time constraints, lack of standardized referral pathways) and social level (e.g., unclear leadership and coordination). Conclusions: The limited integration of GMA, HINE, and MRI into routine practice reflects a persistent “know–do” gap in early CP detection. Since implementation is shaped by the dynamic interplay of capability, opportunity, and motivation, bridging this gap demands sustained and equitable action—by addressing system-wide barriers, supporting professional development, and embedding early detection within national care pathways.
