Mechanochemical methods have received much attention in the synthesis and design of all-solid-state battery materials in recent years due to their advantages of being green, efficient, easy to operate, and solvent-free. In this review, common mechanochemical methods, including high-energy ball milling, twin-screw extrusion (TSE), and resonant acoustic mixing (RAM), are introduced with the aim of providing a fundamental understanding of the subsequent material design. Subsequently, the discussion focuses on the application of mechanochemical methods in the construction of solid-state electrolytes, anode materials, and cathode materials, especially the research progress of mechanical energy-induced polymerization strategies in building flexible composite electrolytes and enhancing interfacial stability. Through the analysis of representative work, it is demonstrated that mechanochemical methods are gradually evolving from traditional physical processing tools to functional synthesis platforms with chemical reaction capabilities. This review systematically organizes its development and research trends in the field of all-solid-state battery materials and explores potential future breakthrough directions. Full article

Nanoparticle-embedded polymeric materials are an important subject in advanced structural applications due to their advantageous combination of low weight and high mechanical performance. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution imaging technique that enables subsurface defect visualization, which can be used as one of the methods to reveal defects resulting from decomposition pathways or mechanisms of polymers. Nevertheless, the low contrast of polymeric materials, particularly PEEK-based polymers, does not allow for automatic geometry extraction for analytical input. To address the constraint of weak contrast, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of plasmonic nanoparticle-reinforced polymer materials has been used as an OCT contrast agent to provide the necessary contrast. The backscattering efficiency of light was also theoretically investigated, based on the Lorenz–Mie theory, with a single spherical nanoparticle embedded in a PEEK matrix as a non-absorptive, isotropic and homogeneous medium. In this study, the cases of a single homogeneous TiO2  nanoparticle and a hybrid TiO2/Au  core/shell nanoparticle configuration were considered separately. An examination of the influence of nanoparticle diameter and gold shell thickness on backscattering efficiencies of these nanostructures was performed. The results indicate that TiO2/Au nanoshells demonstrate superior near-infrared (NIR) light backscattering capabilities at typical OCT operating wavelengths (830–1310 nm). Additionally, the potential of these nanoparticles for application in non-destructive testing-based light backscattering methods was investigated. The findings suggest that TiO2/Au nanoshells have the ability to effectively backscatter near-infrared light in OCT operating central wavelengths, making them suitable to serve as effective NIR contrast-enhancing agents for OCT within the domain of NDT. In this study, we investigate the dominant electromagnetic wave absorption mechanism–ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) loss versus quarter-wave cancellation in a novel PVDF-based polymer composite embedded with carbonaceous nanostructures incorporating FeCoCr ternary alloy. The majority of the nanoparticles are embedded at the terminal ends of the carbon nanotubes, while a small fraction exists as isolated core–shell, carbon-coated spherical particles. Overall, the synthesized material predominantly exhibits a nanotubular carbon morphology. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) confirms that the encapsulated nanoparticles are quasi-spherical in shape, with an average size ranging from approximately 25 to 40 nm. The polymeric composite was synthesized via solution casting, ensuring homogenous dispersion of filler constituent. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance and reflection loss characteristics were evaluated in the X-band frequency range. Experimental results reveal a significant reflection loss exceeding −20 dB at a matching thickness of 2.5 mm, with peak absorption shifting across frequencies with thickness variation. The comparative analysis, supported by quarter-wave theory and FMR resonance conditions, indicates that the absorption mechanism transitions between magnetic resonance and interference-based cancellation depending on the material configuration and thickness. This work provides experimental validation of loss mechanism dominance in magnetic alloy/polymer composites and proposes design principles for tailoring broadband microwave absorbers. Full article

Functional hydrogels have significant potential for applications in the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and environmental sectors. This study focuses on the synthesis of polyampholytic hydrogels through free radical polymerization using functionalized chitosans. The chitosan was modified with mono and disulfonic groups at different temperatures (25 °C and 60 °C) and reaction times (1, 8, 24 h), followed by further modification with glycidyl methacrylate to introduce vinyl groups into the polymers structure. The modified polymers were analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and solubility tests. Specifically, 0.74 mmol/g and 1.58 mmol/g of the primary amine groups available in the chitosan chain (out of a total of 4.93 mmol/g) were substituted with mono- and disulfonic groups, respectively. Following treatment with glycidyl methacrylate, 3.39 mmol/g and 2.21 mmol/g of the remaining primary amine groups in the mono- and disulfonic polymers, respectively, were substituted. The hydrogels obtained by the modified polymers at optimal conditions of 1 h and 25 °C, were characterized by the techniques already mentioned in addition to rheological tests, and water absorption studies across different pHs. The hydrogels demonstrated potential for environmental remediation, particularly in adsorptions of ciprofloxacin (CPX) and copper (Cu2+) from aqueous solutions at pH 7, achieving adsorption efficiencies of 24–25% for CPX and 83% for Cu2+. The results suggest that the synthesized hydrogels could provide an eco-friendly and efficient solution to challenges in wastewater treatment. Full article

Spruce wood is a natural polymeric material, consisting of cellulose, lignin, hemicelluloses and other secondary components, which gives it a unique chemical footprint and architecture. Varnishes are used in musical instruments to protect the wood against humidity variations, wood being a hygroscopic material, but also to protect the wood from dirt. The varnishes used both to protect the wood from resonance and to ensure a special aesthetic appearance are either polymeric varnishes (nitrocellulose, oil-based) or volatile solvents (spirit). In this study, the color changes, the surface morphology and the chemical spectrum produced by three types of varnishes, applied in 5, 10 and 15 layers, on resonance spruce plates were analyzed. The results revealed significant changes in the color parameters: the lightness decreased by approximately 17% after the first layer, by 50% after 5 layers, by 65% after 10 layers and by 70% after 15 layers. The color parameters are most influenced by the anatomical quality of spruce wood (annual ring width and earlywood/latewood ratio) in the case of oil-based varnishes and least influenced in the case of nitrocellulose varnishes. The chemical fingerprint was determined by FTIR spectrum analysis, which revealed that the most pronounced absorptions were the double band 2926–2858 cm−1, corresponding to aliphatic methylene and methyl groups (asymmetric and symmetrical C-H stretch), and the bands at 1724 cm−1 (oil-based varnish), 1722 cm−1 (nitrocellulose varnish) and 1708 cm−1 (spirit varnish), all assigned to non-conjugated carbonyl groups in either carboxylic acids, esters aldehydes or ketones. The novelty of the study lies in the comparative analysis of three types of varnishes used in the musical instrument industry, applied to samples of spruce resonance wood with different macroscopic characteristics in three different layer thicknesses. Microbial contamination is a global concern with impacts on a variety of industries ranging from marine to biomedical applications. Recent research on hydrophilic polymer-based coatings is focused on combining antifouling polymers with nanomaterials to enhance mechanical, optical, and stimuli-responsive properties, yielding colour changing, self-healing, and super hydrophilic materials. This study combines the hydrophilic and antifouling properties of vitamin B5 analogous methacrylamide (B5AMA)-based polymers with stimuli-responsive anthocyanin-dye-loaded cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to develop antifouling materials with colour changing capabilities upon bacterial contamination. Poly(B5AMA)-grafted CNCs were prepared through surface-initiated photoiniferter reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (SP-RAFT) polymerization and characterized through proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), and X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) to confirm the formation of surface-grafted polymer chains. The bare CNCs and poly(B5AMA)-grafted CNCs were loaded with anthocyanin dye and evaluated for pH-dependent colour changing capabilities. Interestingly, anthocyanin-loaded CNCs demonstrated vibrant colour changes in both solution and dried film form upon bacterial contamination; however, limited colour changing capabilities of the composites, specifically in dried film form, were attributed to the enhanced dispersibility and antifouling capabilities of the polymer-coated CNCs. Background/Objectives: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by the interplay between immune responses and dysbiosis in disease development. Aiming to provide additional insights into disease development and potential treatment strategies, the present study investigates the local effect of oral treatment with polysaccharides obtained from Auricularia auricula’s submerged culture in an experimental model of DSS-induced colitis and its impact on lesion resolution. Methods: The structure and monosaccharide composition of Auricularia polysaccharides were characterized through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). To evaluate the effect of this polysaccharide on the murine model, wild-type and Dectin-1 knockout mice were treated or not with the exopolysaccharide (EPS) while under DSS consumption. During the experimental period, feces samples were collected to evaluate microbial shifts during disease development, and, finally, the colonic tissue was analyzed to assess the inflammatory process and cytokine production. Results: The EPS composition showed a polymeric mixture of glucans and fucogalactomannans. The treatment of the wild-type DSS-induced colitis group improved the inflammatory response by increasing gut–homeostatic cytokines, such as interleukin-10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). The Dectin-1 KO mice group did not show the same enhancement after EPS treatment. The microbiome analysis revealed a difference in the genotype, and the treatment modified the DSS microbiome modulation, with nine and four ASVs in WT and Dectin-1 KO mice, respectively. Conclusions: The EPS treatment demonstrated therapeutic potential in treating inflammatory intestinal diseases by modulating cytokine secretion and microbiota composition, which is dependent on the Dectin-1 receptor’s carbohydrate recognition. To address the growing demand for environmentally friendly flexible sensors, here, a composite hydrogel of nanocellulose (NC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was designed and fabricated using Camellia oleifera shells as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based raw materials. Firstly, NC was extracted from Camellia oleifera shells and modified with 2-chloropropyl chloride to obtain a nanocellulose-based initiator (Init-NC) for atomic transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Subsequently, sulfonyl betaine methacrylate (SBMA) was polymerized by Init-NC initiating to yield zwitterion-functionalized nanocellulose (NC-PSBMA). Finally, the NC-PSBMA/PVA hydrogel was fabricated by blending NC-PSBMA with PVA. A Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (1H-NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), universal mechanical testing machine, and digital source-meter were used to characterize the chemical structure, surface microstructure, and sensing performance. The results indicated that: (1) FT-IR and 1H NMR confirmed the successful synthesis of NC-PSBMA; (2) SEM, TEM, and alternating current (AC) impedance spectroscopy verified that the NC-PSBMA/PVA hydrogel exhibits a uniform porous structure (pore diameter was 1.1737 μm), resulting in significantly better porosity (15.75%) and ionic conductivity (2.652 S·m−1) compared to the pure PVA hydrogel; and (3) mechanical testing combined with source meter testing showed that the tensile strength of the composite hydrogel increased by 6.4 times compared to the pure PVA hydrogel; meanwhile, it showed a high sensitivity (GF = 1.40, strain range 0–5%; GF = 1.67, strain range 5–20%) and rapid response time (<0.05 s). This study presents a novel approach to developing bio-based, flexible sensing materials. Full article

The resonant frequency of an SAW oscillator can be modulated by varying the signal amplitude, due to non-linear acoustic interactions within the chemoselective layer. In this study, we developed an explicit model to describe the amplitude–frequency behavior of a tunable SAW oscillator. A polymeric layer of variable thickness was deposited in a circular area (radius 1.1 mm) at the center of the piezoactive surface. Increasing the oscillator loop attenuation resulted in a continuous increase in the resonant frequency by up to 1.8 MHz. The layer was modeled as a succession of non-interacting sub-layers of varying thicknesses. As a result, the function model consists of a superposition of terms, each corresponding to a layer region of distinct length and thickness. The maximum difference between the experimental data and function model (also known as residual of the fit) was below 1% (13.02 kHz) of the resonant frequency variation, thus supporting the validity of our approach. While our model proved successful, the results suggest that some interactions are unaccounted for, as evidenced by the periodicity of the residuals of fit and unrealistically large variation in acoustic wave velocity. Stimuli-responsive polymers (SRPs) have garnered significant attention in recent decades due to their immense potential in biomedical and environmental applications. When these SRPs are grafted onto magnetic nanoparticles, they form multifunctional nanocomposites capable of various complex applications, such as targeted drug delivery, advanced separations, and magnetic resonance imaging. In this study, we employed a one-step hydrothermal method using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTES) to synthesize APTES-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (APTES@Fe3O4) featuring reactive terminal amine groups. Subsequently, via two consecutive surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerizations (SI-ATRP), pH- and temperature-responsive polymer blocks were grown from the Fe3O4 surface, resulting in the formation of poly(itaconic acid)-block-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PIA-b-PNIPAM)-grafted nanomagnetic particles (PIA-b-PNIPAM@Fe3O4). To confirm the chemical composition and assess how the particle morphology and size distribution of these SRP-based nanocomposites change in response to ambient pH and temperature stimuli, various characterization techniques were employed, including transmission electron microscopy, differential light scattering, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated successful synthesis, with PIA-b-PNIPAM@Fe3O4 demonstrating sensitivity to both temperature and pH. Full article

To address the challenges of cotton cellulose materials being susceptible to environmental humidity and pollutant erosion, a strategy for constructing superhydrophobic functional coatings with biomimetic micro–nano composite structures was proposed. Through surface silanization modification, diatomite (DEM) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were functionalized with octyltriethoxysilane (OTS) to prepare superhydrophobic diatomite flakes (ODEM) and OFe3O4 nanoparticles. Following the multi-scale composite principle, ODEM and OFe3O4 nanoparticles were blended and crosslinked via the hydroxyl-initiated ring-opening polymerization of epoxy resin (EP), resulting in an EP/ODEM@OFe3O4 composite coating with hierarchical roughness. Microstructural characterization revealed that the micrometer-scale porous structure of ODEM and the nanoscale protrusions of OFe3O4 form a hierarchical micro–nano topography. The special topography combined with the low surface energy property leads to a contact angle of 158°. Additionally, the narrow bandgap semiconductor characteristic of OFe3O4 induces the localized surface plasmon resonance effect. This enables the coating to attain 80% light absorption across the 350–2500 nm spectrum, and rapidly heat to 45.8 °C within 60 s under 0.5 sun, thereby demonstrating excellent deicing performance. This work provides a theoretical foundation for developing environmentally tolerant superhydrophobic photothermal coatings, which exhibit significant application potential in the field of anti-icing and anti-fouling. With the continuous advancement of electromagnetic protection technologies, the development of lightweight electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials with excellent absorption performance has become a critical challenge in the field. In this study, commercially available hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) were employed as templates, and Ni2+/Co2+ metal ions were used to catalyze the polymerization of dopamine (PDA), forming HGM@NixCoy/PDA precursors. Subsequent high-temperature pyrolysis yielded lightweight composite absorbing materials, denoted as HGM@NixCoy/C. This material integrates dielectric loss, conductive loss, magnetic loss, and resonance absorption mechanisms, exhibiting outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption properties. The absorption performance can be effectively tuned by adjusting the Ni-to-Co ratio, with the optimal performance observed at an atomic ratio of 2:3. At a filler loading of 20 wt.%, HGM@Ni2Co3/C achieved an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.83 GHz (ranging from 10.53 to 17.36 GHz) and a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −27.26 dB. These results demonstrate that the synergistic combination of hollow glass bubbles and carbon-based magnetic components not only significantly reduces the material density and required filler content but also enhances overall absorption performance, highlighting its great potential in the development of lightweight and high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorbers. Main-chain conjugated and non-conjugated polyelectrolytes are an important class of materials that have many technological applications ranging from fire-retardant materials to carbon-nanotube composites, nonlinear optical materials, electrochromic materials for smart windows, and optical sensors for biomolecules. Here, we describe a series of poly(pyridinium salt)s-fluorene containing 9,9-bis(4-aminophenyl)fluorene moieties with various organic counterions that were synthesized using ring-transmutation polymerization and metathesis reactions, which are non-conjugated polyelectrolytes. Their chemical structures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), proton (1H) and fluorine 19 (19F) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers, and elemental analysis. They exhibited polyelectrolytic behavior in dimethyl sulfoxide. Their lyotropic liquid-crystalline phases were examined by polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) studies. Their emission spectra exhibited a positive solvatochromism on changing the polarity of solvents. They emitted greenish-yellow lights in polar organic solvents. They formed aggregates in polar aprotic and protic solvents with the addition of water (v/v, 0–90%), whose λem peaks were blue shifted. Full article

Polymeric nanoparticles based on poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) (PECA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) were synthesized via semicontinuous microemulsion polymerization for potential biomedical applications. A systematic evaluation of four surfactants (Tween 80, Alkonat L70, Genapol LRO, and Brij-20) was carried out to determine their effects on micelle formation and particle size. Brij-20 enabled the formation of nanoparticles under 100 nm, with optimal conditions identified at 4% surfactant concentration and pH 1.75. The polymerization process included acid-catalyzed ring-opening of ε-caprolactone, followed by the semicontinuous addition of ethyl-2-cyanoacrylate under an inert atmosphere. Copolymerization was confirmed through FT-IR spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry, revealing a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 110.9 °C, indicating PECA as the dominant phase. Thermogravimetric analysis showed two decomposition events corresponding to each polymer. Transmission electron microscope analysis revealed nanoparticles averaging 51.74 nm in diameter. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of producing PECA-PCL nanoparticles with controlled size and composition, suitable for drug delivery and other biomedical uses. Full article
