A sustainable polymer-based filtration control system was developed for high-temperature, high-density water-based drilling fluids. The system’s rheological stability, filtration performance, and filter cake properties were evaluated under varying conditions of temperature, salinity, and density. The drilling fluid density ranged from 1.80 to 2.20 g/cm3, the temperature from 25 to 150 °C, and the NaCl mass fraction w(NaCl) = 5–20%. The results indicated that increasing fluid density resulted in a progressive increase in apparent and plastic viscosities (from 42.6/28.4 mPa·s to 65.1/47.9 mPa·s), while the yield point remained relatively stable (14.2–17.2 Pa), suggesting that high solid loading enhanced viscous dissipation without inducing structural stiffening. Filtration loss increased moderately with temperature (6.8–12.3 mL at 25–150 °C) and salinity (6.8–10.7 mL at w(NaCl) = 5–20%), whereas it decreased significantly with increasing density (13.1–9.4 mL at 1.80–2.20 g/cm3), indicating a density-dominated filtration regime. At 120 °C, w(NaCl) = 12%, and 2.00 g/cm3, the developed system achieved a low filtration loss of 8.4 mL, outperforming three representative conventional filtration-control systems, including starch-based, sulfonated asphalt-based, and polymer-based technologies. Filter cake analysis revealed that increasing density facilitated the packing of multi-scale solids, reducing filter cake thickness from 1.62 mm to 0.98 mm and permeability from 1.34 × 10−15–4.05 × 10−16 m2, while significantly improving resistance to erosion and compression. These findings demonstrate that the combination of interfacial stabilization and filter cake densification offers a robust and controllable filtration solution for high-temperature, high-density drilling environments, presenting a promising approach for drilling fluid systems in challenging conditions. Drought stress profoundly affects plant growth and survival, but comparisons of integrated adaptive strategies across multiple tree species remain unclear. In this study, seedlings of Elaeagnus angustifolia (E. angustifolia), Populus euphratica (P. euphratica) and Xanthoceras sorbifolium (X. sorbifolium) were subjected to well-watered (CK), mild (T1), moderate (T2), and severe (T3) drought treatments. Leaf microanatomical traits, non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), stoichiometric elements, biomass allocation, and key stress indicators were measured. The results showed that P. euphratica seedlings thickened leaves and vascular tissues and accumulated soluble sugars (SSs) and starch (ST) under T1–T2, but under T3, they prioritized root investment (root biomass +26.0%); their antioxidant enzymes were activated only under mild-to-moderate stress and declined under severe stress. E. angustifolia seedlings exhibited moderate leaf structural thickening, sharply increased root biomass (+97.2% under T3) while maintaining stem biomass, continuously elevated activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) as well as osmoregulatory substances (soluble protein SP, proline Pro), and showed the lowest malondialdehyde (MDA) content; their leaf carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents decreased the least, and their stoichiometric ratios remained stable. In contrast, X. sorbifolium seedlings progressively reduced leaf thickness and vascular area, depleted NSC reserves, exhibited unstable antioxidant responses, showed a significant decrease in Pro under severe drought, accumulated the highest MDA, and had the lowest N/P ratio, indicating the strongest nitrogen limitation. These results demonstrate that E. angustifolia combines structural plasticity, efficient nutrient use, robust osmotic adjustment, and sustained antioxidant capacity, conferring the strongest drought tolerance; P. euphratica* shows moderate tolerance through transient structural and carbon investment but suffers under extreme drought; X. sorbifolium has the weakest drought tolerance. This research focuses on developing bioplastic films using agrifood industrial waste, which included starch from avocado seed, cellulose from cornstalk, carrot and beet peel, and pulp from a food company in México. The films were produced with a matrix of gelatin and glycerol, and different formulations of starch and cellulose. The films were characterized and tested as wrappers of Manchego cheese. The films containing starch are transparent; films with cellulose showed opacity and paper-like structure. Films containing starch–cornstalk cellulose showed the highest hydrophobic properties. In turn, films with carrot cellulose had the highest plastic properties with high elongation capacity and the lowest Young modules; films with starch and other celluloses showed the opposite data. The highest thermal capacity was observed in films containing cellulose from cornstalks and beet waste. In turn, the highest temperatures of transition, crystallization, and melting were registered in films containing starch. Films with starch and cellulose served well as wrappers of Manchego cheese, conserving 92% of the weight of cheese after 21 days of storage at 4 °C. All films were biodegradable in compost after 10 days, and they were degradable by physicochemical factors after 40 days. Full article

The transition from petrochemical plastics to sustainable biopolymers has created a critical demand for functional materials that do not compromise on performance. Starch and zein, due to their abundance and complementary nature, represent not just a chemical pair, but a techno-economic symbiosis: zein provides the hydrophobic shield, while starch offers the cost-effective structural volume. This review adopts a “Puzzle Theory” framework to synthesize over 80 peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2025, categorizing the literature into established structural knowledge and unresolved functional limitations. Our analysis reveals that while fabrication protocols and molecular synergy are well-defined in approximately 65% of the surveyed literature, critical functional data remain largely absent. Specifically, fewer than 15% of studies investigate hydro-stability in high-humidity environments or bio-interface behavior, creating a disconnect between laboratory success and industrial application. We identify that current research disproportionately prioritizes dry-state morphology over wet-state mechanical integrity. To bridge the gap between academic prototypes and industrial reality, this article moves beyond general recommendations to propose concrete experimental benchmarks, including specific targets for wet mechanical integrity (>1 MPa), regulatory solvent compliance (<50 ppm), and scalable throughput. This article concludes by providing a strategic roadmap to bridge these gaps, arguing that future research must pivot from simple morphological characterization to developing “smart response” mechanisms and “green manufacturing” protocols to ensure commercial viability. This work presents a method to encapsulate plant extracts within a binary polysaccharide carrier and to characterize the physicochemical and rheological performance of the resulting biocomposites in the context of food use. Using a starch/psyllium matrix, extracts from Sambucus nigra (SN), Aronia melanocarpa (AM), and Echinacea purpurea (EP) were effectively protected and incorporated through a stepwise workflow encompassing matrix preparation, encapsulation, structural verification, and functional assessment. SEM revealed a porous network containing uniformly distributed, extract-loaded spherical structures (~800–1500 nm), while FTIR supported the presence of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions that contributed to system stability. The prepared nanoemulsions showed shear-thinning (pseudoplastic) behavior, indicating favorable processing characteristics, whereas most physicochemical and bioactivity measurements were performed on lyophilized composites. The dried materials preserved extract-specific color signatures (ΔE > 5) and exhibited distinct thermal responses: AM produced a pronounced plasticizing effect (Tg reduced by >20 °C), while the incorporation of extracts generally delayed thermal degradation, consistent with polyphenol–starch interactions. Phase-transition behavior was also altered, with melting peaks suppressed for SN and AM and melting temperatures lowered for EP. Surface analysis indicated increased hydrophobicity and a reduced polar component of surface free energy, suggesting improved moisture barrier potential. Antioxidant capacity closely tracked total phenolic content (r > 0.94), with caffeic acid contributing strongly, particularly in EP-based systems. Antimicrobial activity depended on extract type (broad-spectrum for EP, selective for SN, minimal for AM), and the comparatively higher sensitivity of Gram-negative bacteria points to improved phenolic availability and membrane interactions upon encapsulation. Collectively, these results highlight the starch/psyllium matrix as a flexible platform for stabilizing plant extracts while enabling tunable functional attributes for functional food applications. The growing pollution caused by plastics with slow degradation kinetics is demanding the search for biodegradable alternatives. Starch-based films are a promising option, but their practical application may be limited by their potential susceptibility to rapid ultraviolet (UV) exposure degradation. This study evaluates the effect of prolonged UV-C irradiation (254 nm, 168 h) on plasticizer-free films derived from the starch of an Ecuadorian potato Solanum tuberosum (Chola variety). Films formulated at 3% and 5% (w/v) starch were characterized before and after UV exposure. The analysis includes the evaluation of optical, mechanical, and physicochemical properties, along with Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) for nanoscale surface inspection. UV irradiation increased the opacity of the films but reduced slightly their tensile strength, elongation at break, moisture content, and total soluble matter. In contrast, the elastic modulus remained relatively high. FTIR analysis revealed no significant formation of new functional groups. AFM measurements indicated that irradiation caused only minor nanoscale alterations in the same film regions. These alterations were more pronounced in films with higher starch concentrations. The results demonstrate that UV-C exposure induces minor structural adjustments in plasticizer-free starch films derived from the Chola variety, without compromising their fundamental integrity. Consequently, this work advances the understanding of the environmental stability of these films and supports their potential application as sustainable materials, even in conditions involving UV exposure. Thermoplastic starch (TPS) can be a sustainable alternative to petrochemical plastics for flexible packaging, especially in rainforests and tropical regions where native starch sources such as cassava are abundant. However, one problem preventing TPS packaging from widespread use is its susceptibility to moisture. This study evaluated TPS formulations based on Amazonian cassava starch reinforced with plantain leaf fibers, beeswax, and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) particles. The plastic compounds were extruded to obtain pellets and then films at 120–130 °C. The resulting films were then cut and heat-sealed to obtain flexible packaging. Different properties of the TPS packages were evaluated, such as mechanical strength, water vapor transmission (WVTR), color, infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and moisture adsorption. The results showed that the formulation with beeswax (2% w/w), plantain leaves powder (1% w/w), and LDPE powder (2% w/w) had a higher tensile strength (5.99 MPa) and moisture barrier (WVTR = 366.6 g m−2 d−1) compared to the control formulation only with plasticizers (glycerol and water) but without reinforcements (0.48 MPa and 1486.6 g m−2 d−1, respectively). Films with only beeswax (4% w/w) and plantain leaves powder (2.5% w/w) had tensile strength = 5.53 MPa and WVTR = 716.8 g m−2 d−1, with higher moisture adsorption compared to the samples with LDPE. In both cases, homogeneous and heat-sealable bags were obtained. The reinforced TPS films can be used to reduce the environmental impact generated by single-use packaging applications such as food commercialization. Full article

The environmental impact of conventional plastics has driven a shift toward biobased food packaging, shaped by consumer expectations, market trends, and regulatory policies within the European Union (EU). Despite extensive research on biopolymers such as starch, cellulose, chitosan, and polylactic acid (PLA), their use in commercial food packaging remains limited. A major challenge identified in the literature is the evaluation of biopolymer performance, in which environmental benefits are often considered independently of mechanical, barrier, and economic factors. This review addresses this gap by critically exploring the functional performance of biopolymers regarding their chemical structure and processing methods, with particular emphasis on the role of bioactive compounds in enhancing these materials’ properties. Although several biopolymers can achieve tensile strength values comparable to conventional petroleum-based plastics, their higher water vapor transmission rates remain an unsolved barrier to scalability. These limitations, together with challenges related to mechanical performance and production costs, are discussed to clarify their impact on industrial feasibility and to identify priorities for future research supporting scalable, cost-effective, and regulatory-compliant food packaging solutions. Sorghum-derived biopolymers, such as starch and procyanidins, combined with gelatin, are promising candidates for the development of sustainable, biodegradable, non-toxic, and functional films for various applications. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of starch on the improvement of mechanical, thermal, and water-solubility properties of films developed with gelatin/starch/procyanidins blends. Films were prepared using various gelatin (G)–starch (S) ratios (G-100, GS-75:25, GS-50:50, GS-25:75, S-100) and procyanidin concentrations (5–20 mg/mL), being plasticized with glycerol. Subsequently, the films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), molecular docking, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and measurements of thickness, opacity, and water solubility. SEM, XRD, and FTIR analyses confirmed the compatibility among the film components, while molecular docking analysis supported these experimental findings. TGA and DSC analyses showed that most films maintained thermal stability up to 150 °C. The GS-25:75 formulation, in which starch predominated, exhibited the most favorable balance of mechanical and thermal properties. All the films obtained can be considered ultra-thin; opacity increased with the starch and procyanidin content, while maintaining low water solubility levels. In conclusion, the GS-25:75 formulation with 10–20 mg/mL procyanidins is particularly promising for applications that require films with structurally stable properties, as well as enhanced mechanical, thermal, and water-solubility properties. This study conducted a multi-criteria assessment of farming systems (organic vs. integrated) and hydrothermal conditions on the productivity and quality of seven potato cultivars in Southern Poland (2022–2024). The objective was to identify genotypes with the highest plasticity for adaptation to Sustainable Land Management (SLM) strategies. Using a split-plot design, analyses covered total and marketable yield, tuber architecture, and starch and dry matter concentration. Statistical evaluation utilized ANOVA and variance component analysis to determine the contribution of genetic and environmental factors to phenotypic variability. Results showed that productivity was strongly determined by the cultivation system, with organic yields being 20–57% lower due to Phytophthora infestans and virus pressure. Notably, the lack of a significant three-way interaction (S × V × Y) for quality traits suggests high predictability of starch and dry matter based on genotype selection, regardless of management-induced stressors. The ‘Lawenda’ cultivar demonstrated superior adaptation to organic frameworks. We conclude that organic potato production is viable in warming climates if supported by rigorous cultivar selection and biological innovations. Future research should focus on the long-term monitoring of soil organic matter dynamics and the economic viability of these systems throughout a full crop rotation cycle. Such an approach is essential to provide a more comprehensive and robust foundation for sustainable land-use policies. Full article

To identify a suitable plastic film type for broccoli cultivation in the subtropical humid region of southern China, a field experiment was conducted with four treatments, including no film control (CK), reinforced polyethylene film (RF), biodegradable film PBAT + starch (BDF1), and biodegradable film PBAT + PLA (BDF2). Soil physiochemical properties, temperature and humidity dynamics, microbial community structure, and film degradation status were investigated. The results showed that the RF treatment improved available P and K contents, while the BDF2 treatment significantly increased soil organic matter, NH4+-N, water-soluble Ca2+, and Mg2+ contents. The soil temperature followed the order of RF > BDF1 > BDF2 > CK, and the humidity was BDF1 > RF > CK > BDF2, with RF treatment showing a more stable soil temperature, while BDF2 treatment fluctuated the most. There were no significant differences in bacterial diversity among the treatments, while the highest fungal diversity was observed in the BDF2. Water-soluble Mg was the key factor driving the changes in microbial community structure (p < 0.05). The film degradation rate followed BDF2 > BDF1 > RF. Collectively, RF is suitable for targeting short-term yield improvement, while BDF2 has significant advantages in sustainable cultivation in the long-term. Full article

The increasing demand for sustainable materials has driven interest in biocomposites that incorporate low-value agricultural residues to offset the use of virgin plastics. The study investigated the production of blend pellets from raw and torrefied almond shells and post-consumer plastic waste as a potential feedstock for biocomposite and biofuels applications. Almond shells were torrefied in a lab-scale fixed-bed reactor at 300 °C for 30 min prior to the pelleting tests. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) wastes were size-reduced in a Crumbler (rotary shear grinder) fitted with a 2 mm head and a 2 mm screen to remove the fines. A portion of the crumbled HDPE, and torrefied almond shells were further ground in a Wiley mill fitted with 2 and 1 mm screens for flat die pelleting tests. The flat die pellet mill used for testing had a 6 mm die and a length-to-diameter (L/D) ratio of 2.0. The blend ratio consisted of 30% torrefied almond shells and 70% HDPE, with a 10% starch binder. The measured pellet properties include unit, bulk and tap densities, durability, and expansion ratio. The bulk density of the blend pellets ranged from 360 to 410 kg/m3, and durability ranged from 80% to 88%. The blend pellet unit density ranged from 830 to 880 kg/m3. The blend pellets produced using crumbled HDPE, PP and raw and torrefied almond shells in a ring die pilot-scale pellet mill with an L/D ratio of 6 and steam conditioning exhibit similar densities to those of HDPE pellets produced using a flat die pellet mill, albeit with lower durability. The study indicated that a smaller grind size and preheating the blend before pelleting produce blend pellets with higher density and greater durability. Full article

Biodegradable active packaging that incorporates food-grade additives offers a promising solution for extending shelf life and minimizing food waste. This study investigates the development of functional packaging films for cheese applications by blending thermoplastic starch (TPS) and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) in a 60/40 (w/w) ratio with various concentrations of sodium lactate (SL; 1–7% w/w) using blown-film extrusion. Spectroscopic analyses, including 1H NMR and FTIR, confirmed the presence of hydrogen-bonding and ionic interactions between the hydroxyl (–OH) groups of thermoplastic starch (TPS) and the carboxylate (–COO) groups of sodium lactate, which enhanced interfacial compatibility and produced smoother, more compact film morphologies. SL acted as a multifunctional plasticizer and compatibilizer, improving film flexibility while slightly reducing tensile strength. Notably, SL incorporation increased water vapor permeability and surface wettability but significantly decreased oxygen permeability to below 1 cc·mm/m2·day·atm. At moderate concentrations (≥ 3% w/w), SL also exhibited antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. When applied to cheese packaging, SL-modified films effectively maintained color stability for up to 9 days under refrigerated storage. Notably, cheeses packaged with films containing 3–7% (w/w) SL exhibited significantly lower hardness values than the control on day 3, indicating improved moisture retention and texture preservation, although these differences were no longer significant by day 9. These findings demonstrate that sodium lactate can simultaneously enhance interfacial miscibility, oxygen barrier performance, and antimicrobial functionality in sustainable, biodegradable active packaging systems. The rapid accumulation of plastic waste and the depletion of fossil resources have intensified global efforts to develop biodegradable polymeric materials derived from renewable feedstocks. In this context, starch-based films have emerged as one of the most promising alternatives to conventional petroleum-based plastics, owing to their wide availability, low cost, biodegradability, and ability to form continuous films using simple and scalable processing techniques. Starch is a naturally occurring polysaccharide composed primarily of amylose and amylopectin, whose molecular structure is rich in hydroxyl (–OH) groups. These functional groups promote extensive intermolecular hydrogen bonding, enabling starch gelatinization and film formation in aqueous systems. However, the same hydroxyl-rich structure confers a pronounced hydrophilic character, resulting in high moisture sensitivity, poor water vapor barrier properties, and limited dimensional stability under humid. Consequently, improving the hydrophobicity of starch-based films remains one of the most critical challenges for their practical application in food packaging. This review aims to summarize and critically discuss the main strategies reported for improving the hydrophobicity of starch-based films. The review focuses on composition and processing approaches, including (i) chemical modification of starch, (ii) incorporation of hydrophobic additives, (iii) reinforcement with natural fibers and nanocellulosic materials, (iv) polymer blending and multilayer/gradient architectures, and (v) processing strategies, including film homogenization, shear treatment and aging conditions. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms governing hydrophobicity enhancement, comparative performance indicators, and current limitations. Full article

Biopolymers can be derived from biological sources, including protein blends with plasticizers, starch, enzymatic synthesis, microorganisms, and algae. They are classified into polynucleotides, polysaccharides, and polypeptides, including polyhydroxyalkanoates, polylactic acid, and thermoplastic starch. Blending polymers with plasticizers and nanoparticles enhances their mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties. Biopolymers have various applications, such as in packaging, textiles, medical devices, cosmetics, agriculture, food products, emulsifiers, construction additives, bioplastics, and biofuels. Some of the advantages of biopolymers include their biodegradability, use of renewable resources, and reduced environmental impact. Nevertheless, certain disadvantages persist, such as high production costs, inadequate waste management systems, material quality loss during recycling, and the limited availability of raw materials. In this context, castor oil has emerged as a promising raw material for biopolymer production, with notable applications in coatings and sealants, and, consequently, bioplastics have become a sustainable and feasible alternative to conventional plastics that aligns with the principles of the circular economy. Moreover, new biopolymers are constantly being developed, and innovative applications are increasingly being explored across industries. The aim of the present review is to analyze the potential of biopolymers as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics by evaluating their sources, production methods, advantages, limitations, and applications.
