Task switching is an important cognitive function required for daily life, and task reconfiguration is one of the main explanations for the origins of switching costs. Studies have demonstrated that sleep significantly affects task switching abilities. However, there remains insufficient evidence on how poor sleep quality impacts task switching abilities among university students. A total of 85 university students were included in this study and classified into a poor sleep quality group (PSQ group, n = 47) and normal control group (NC group, n = 38) based on their Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores. A task-cueing paradigm with different cue-to-target intervals (CTIs) was used to evaluate the participants’ task switching abilities and explore the process of task reconfiguration. An ANCOVA and subsequent simple effect analysis showed that the RT switching costs of the NC group decreased significantly as the CTI increased. However, there was no significant decrease in the PSQ group. Additionally, a significant difference was observed between different CTI conditions in repeat trials for the PSQ group, while no significant difference was observed for the NC group. The results showed that students with poor sleep quality exhibited slower task reconfiguration processes compared to the normal controls. Additionally, their capacity to resist interference and maintain task rules was found to be impaired. Full article

Who Benefits the Most from Sleep Hygiene Education? Findings from the SLeep Education for Everyone Program (SLEEP)

This study examined data from participants who completed the SLeep Education for Everyone Program (SLEEP) to explore how various demographic variables affected sleep outcomes and to determine which participant characteristics predicted success. A total of 104 individuals participated. The Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI) measured undesirable sleep behaviors; the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessed sleep quality and self-reported sleep duration. Participant demographic information was collected at baseline. A mixed ANOVA evaluated group differences, and a multiple linear regression model identified predictors of sleep improvements. Change in SHI scores from pre- to post-intervention demonstrated a significant time × group interaction between Black and white participants (p = 0.024); further analysis indicated Black participants improved more. Better baseline scores predicted more favorable post-intervention outcomes for SHI, PSQI, and sleep duration. Fewer chronic conditions predicted better post-intervention SHI and PSQI scores. Older age also predicted better SHI scores. More favorable initial scores, fewer chronic conditions, and older age were the strongest predictors of positive outcomes following SLEEP. Improved sleep hygiene, sleep quality, and sleep duration were observed over time within subjects across all groups. In summary, SLEEP appears to be effective. Further work exploring challenges experienced by younger participants or those with multiple co-morbidities is warranted. Full article

Background/Objectives: Sleep questionnaires are used as screening tools to estimate the presence and severity of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The aim was to prospectively assess the diagnostic and prognostic accuracy of sleep questionnaires (Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Visual Analog Scale for snoring loudness (VAS), Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36), STOP-Bang, and Pittsburgh Quality of Sleep (PSQI)) in subjects who underwent minimally invasive surgery for snoring and OSA. Methods: A total of 49 participants with primary snoring and/or OSA underwent minimally invasive surgery. Pre- and post-operative sleep study parameters and sleep questionnaire results were analyzed to assess the correlation between the subjective and objective parameters before and after surgery and changes with the surgery. Results: Pre-operative sleep study parameters demonstrated: an apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) of 16.71 ± 9.31, oxygen desaturation index (ODI) of 14.43 ± 9.31, and mean percentage of snoring time (ST) of 17.26 ± 14.5%, ESS of 9.04 ± 5.76, VAS of 8.18 ± 1.93, SF-36 of 42.12 ± 22.86, STOP-Bang of 3.65 ± 1.13, and PSQI of 6.61 ± 3.23. Post-operative sleep study parameters demonstrated an AHI of 10.39 ± 7.86, ODI of 10.17 ± 7.78, and ST of 12.55 ± 13.36%, ESS of 6.61 ± 4.55, VAS of 4.13 ± 2.87, SF-36 of 42.45 ± 24.70, STOP-Bang of 2.49 ± 1.42, and PSQI of 4.98 ± 2.13. Changes with surgery for sleep parameters demonstrated a decrease in AHI: 37.83%, ODI: 29.52%, ST: 27.3%, ESS: 26.86%, VAS: 49.50%, PSQI: 24.69%, and STOP-Bang: 31.84%. The score of SF-36 was not significant. Conclusions: Sleep questionnaires are an essential component of the workup for patients with snoring and OSA. There are differences in their ability to identify the presence and quantify the severity of snoring and OSA when compared to objective sleep parameters. Their sensitivity in assessing changes with treatment also varies. Full article

Poor sleep quality and insomnia are increasingly linked to chronic inflammation and obesity-related metabolic dysfunction. Aerobic exercise is a promising non-pharmacological approach for enhancing sleep quality and reducing systemic inflammation; Therefore, we aim to systematically evaluate and quantify the effects of aerobic exercise interventions on subjective sleep quality, insomnia severity, and circulating markers (IL-6 and TNF-α) in adults. A systematic search was conducted in institutional databases (UNAM, UACJ) and PubMed to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effects of exercise on sleep and inflammation. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane RoB2 tool. Meta-analyses were performed using RevMan 5.4 with random-effects models to estimate pooled mean differences (MD) and standardized mean differences (SMD), with 95% confidence intervals. Anaerobic protocols were excluded from the meta-analysis due to the insufficient availability of data. : Eleven RCTs met the inclusion criteria. Aerobic exercise showed a significant pooled effect on sleep outcomes (MD = −2.51; 95% CI: −4.80 to −0.23; p = 0.03). However, subgroup analyses for Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) (MD = −2.27; p = 0.15) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) (MD = −2.98; p = 0.16) were not statistically significant. Two studies on IL-6 reported a non-significant reduction (SMD = −0.17; p = 0.66), with moderate heterogeneity. TNF-α results were also non-significant (SMD = 0.60; p = 0.29) with substantial variability. Our results showed that aerobic exercise may modestly improve sleep outcomes; however, current evidence does not support its effectiveness in reducing levels of IL-6 or TNF-α. Further well-controlled trials are needed to clarify its immunometabolic effects, particularly in populations with obesity or metabolic disorders. Full article

Background: Cannabidiol (CBD) has demonstrated potential as a therapeutic agent for muscle tension, pain, and sleep bruxism, yet its broader impact on comorbid conditions such as sleep disturbance and migraine disability remains underexplored. This study aimed to assess the effects of topical CBD on sleep quality and migraine-related disability in patients with bruxism-associated muscular pain. Methods: In a randomized, double-blind clinical trial, 60 participants with bruxism were allocated equally into three groups: control (placebo gel), 5% CBD gel, and 10% CBD gel. Participants applied the gel intraorally to the masseter muscles nightly for 30 days. Sleep quality and migraine-related disability were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), respectively. Surface electromyography (sEMG) and the Bruxoff® device were used for objective evaluation of muscle tension and bruxism intensity. Results: Both CBD treatment groups demonstrated statistically significant improvements in PSQI and MIDAS scores compared to the control group (p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed between the 5% and 10% CBD groups, suggesting comparable efficacy. The sEMG findings corroborated a reduction in muscle tension. Improvements in sleep and migraine outcomes were positively correlated with reductions in muscle activity and pain. Conclusions: Topical CBD gel significantly improved sleep quality and reduced migraine-related disability in patients with bruxism-associated muscular pain, supporting its role as a multifaceted therapeutic option in the management of TMD and related comorbidities. Further research is needed to confirm long-term benefits and determine optimal dosing strategies. Full article

Background/Objectives: The glymphatic system plays a crucial role in clearing brain metabolic waste, and its dysfunction has been correlated to various neurological disorders. The Diffusion Tensor Imaging Analysis Along the Perivascular Space (DTI-ALPS) index has been proposed as a non-invasive marker of glymphatic function by measuring diffusivity along perivascular spaces; however, its sensitivity to sleep-related changes in glymphatic activity has not yet been validated. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using the DTI-ALPS index as a quantitative marker of dynamic glymphatic activity during sleep. Methods: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were obtained from 12 healthy male participants (age = 24.44 ± 2.5 years; Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) < 5), once while awake and 16 times during sleep, following 24 h sleep deprivation and administration of 10 mg zolpidem. Simultaneous MR-compatible electroencephalography was used to determine whether the subject was asleep or awake. DTI preprocessing included eddy current correction and tensor fitting. The DTI-ALPS index was calculated from nine regions of interest in projection and association areas aligned to standard space. The final analysis included nine participants (age = 24.56 ± 2.74 years; PSQI < 5) who maintained a continuous sleep state for 1 h without awakening. Results: Among nine ROI pairs, three showed significant increases in the DTI-ALPS index during sleep compared to wakefulness (Friedman test; p = 0.027, 0.029, 0.034). These ROIs showed changes at 14, 19, and 25 min after sleep induction, with FDR-corrected p-values of 0.024, 0.018, and 0.018, respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a statistically significant increase in the DTI-ALPS index within 30 min after sleep induction through time-series DTI analysis during wakefulness and sleep, supporting its potential as a biomarker reflecting glymphatic activity. Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused sickness and death among many health care workers. However, the apparent resistance of health care workers to SARS-CoV-2 infection despite their high-risk work environment remains unclear. To investigate if inflammation and circadian disruption contribute to resistance or diminished susceptibility to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we retrospectively evaluated a cohort of volunteer hospital nurses (VHNs). Methods: A total of 246 apparently healthy VHNs (mean age 37.4 ± 5.9 years) who had received the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine were asked to report their sleep quality, according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and number of SARS-CoV-2 infections during the observational study period (from the end of December 2020 to April 2025). The expression of inflammation-associated mediators and circadian transcription factors in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, as well as sleep quality, were examined. Results: Our findings revealed no anthropometric, biochemical, or inflammation-associated parameters but demonstrated significantly greater levels of NFE2L2, also known as nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (NFR2), gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells among VHNs who had never been infected with SARS-CoV-2 (n = 97) than in VHNs with only one (n = 119) or with two or more (n = 35) prior SARS-CoV-2 infections (p < 0.01). This result was confirmed through one-to-one propensity score matching (p < 0.01). Moreover, NRF2 gene expression was not associated with the number of COVID-19 vaccinations (p = 0.598). Finally, NRF2 gene expression was higher among participants who reported better sleep quality (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Our findings suggest possible interactions among NRF2 gene expression, protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the modulation of COVID-19 vaccination efficacy. Full article

Background: Sleep is a fundamental component of health, and deprivation has been linked to numerous adverse outcomes, including reduced academic and occupational performance, greater risk of accidents, and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases and premature mortality. Dietary and lifestyle behaviors are increasingly recognized as key determinants of sleep quality. Women are particularly susceptible to sleep disturbances due to hormonal fluctuations and psychosocial factors. However, women remain underrepresented in sleep research. This study aims to examine the associations between sleep quality, nutrition, and lifestyle in a large cohort of Spanish women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 785 women aged 18–64. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the NutSo-HH questionnaire on dietary and lifestyle behaviors. Descriptive analyses, correlation matrices, Gaussian Graphical Models, and Principal Component Analyses were used to assess relationships between variables. Results: More than half of the participants rated their sleep quality as good or very good, although over 30% experienced frequent nighttime awakenings. Poor sleep quality was significantly associated with higher alcohol consumption, lower vegetable and white fish intake, and lower levels of physical activity. Diets rich in ultra-processed foods correlated moderately with subjective poor sleep and daytime dysfunction. However, no strong associations were found between stimulant consumption, late meals, or dietary patterns (e.g., Mediterranean diet) and sleep. Self-perceived health emerged as a protective factor, while nocturnal lifestyles were linked to longer sleep latency and fragmented sleep. Conclusions: In adult women, better sleep quality is linked to healthy dietary choices, regular physical activity, and a positive perception of general health. In contrast, alcohol use and irregular lifestyles are associated with poor sleep. Individual variability and cultural adaptation may moderate the impact of some traditionally harmful behaviors. Personalized, multidimensional interventions are recommended for promoting sleep health in women. Full article

Sleep is critical for cognitive and psychomotor performance in demanding decision-making contexts such as sports officiating. Given the lack of research in the field, the cognitive complexity, and the high-pressure environment of judo refereeing, this study aimed to evaluate the sleep quality of active judo referees and examine differences based on gender, age, refereeing experience, and athletic background. This cross-sectional study included 73 active Turkish judo referees (42 male, 31 female; age = 29.8 ± 11.0 years). Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and data were analysed using t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, regression, and mediation analyses. Data showed a mean sleep time of 7:43 + 1:27 and a total PSQI score of 7.21 + 3.53, and participants had been referees for a mean of 6.58 + 8.12 years. The overall sleep quality was suboptimal, with female referees reporting significantly poorer sleep than males. No significant differences in PSQI scores were found across referee seniority levels or educational levels. Correlation analysis showed significant negative associations between PSQI scores and both age and refereeing experience. The final hierarchical regression model with the age, gender, and athletic background significantly predicted PSQI scores. Mediation analysis further revealed that referee qualification level indirectly influenced sleep quality through age. The study is the first one in this area of judo referring, and it highlights poor sleep quality among judo referees, regardless of experience or qualification level, with gender, age, and athletic background emerging as key predictors. The lack of sleep education in both athletic and refereeing careers suggests a need for targeted interventions, especially for younger and female referees, to improve performance and prevent health issues. Further research is needed to explore these relationships over time and in elite-level referees. Full article

Sleep disturbances frequently affect postmenopausal women, yet the evidence supporting the use of aromatherapy as a therapeutic intervention remains inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of aromatherapy in improving sleep quality in postmenopausal women by analyzing data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Three RCTs comprising a total of 301 participants were included. Eligible studies compared aromatherapy with control conditions and reported sleep-related outcomes. The pooled analysis revealed no statistically significant difference in global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores between the aromatherapy and control groups (mean difference, −2.66; 95% CI −6.49 to 1.17; p = 0.17), with high heterogeneity (I² = 98%). However, subgroup analyses demonstrated significant improvements in sleep latency (mean difference, −0.98; 95% CI −1.75 to −0.21; p = 0.01) and daytime drowsiness (mean difference, −0.79; 95% CI −1.30 to −0.28; p = 0.002). These findings suggest that aromatherapy may provide targeted benefits for certain aspects of sleep, particularly sleep latency and daytime dysfunction. Further high-quality RCTs with larger sample sizes, standardized aromatherapy protocols, and long-term follow-up are necessary to validate these outcomes and establish evidence-based clinical guidelines for the use of aromatherapy in managing sleep disturbances among postmenopausal women. Background/Objectives Lettuce is known to contain compounds that promote sleep. This study aims to evaluate the effects of lettuce extract on Korean adults experiencing poor sleep quality. Methods In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, participants aged 30–65 with poor sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) > 5) were recruited. Over 4 weeks, participants took two capsules daily of either the test extract or placebo. Sleep quality and quantity were assessed using the PSQI, actigraphy and polysomnography, and analyzed using ANCOVA adjusting for baseline, age, and sex. Results The adjusted final PSQI scores showed greater improvement in the test group than in the placebo group for both the global scores (6.48 ± 0.63 vs. 7.41 ± 0.57, p = 0.0462). Regarding actigraphy measurements, the adjusted final means showed significant improvements in the test group compared to the placebo group for total sleep time (TST) (421.68 ± 13.29 vs. 386.57 ± 12.27 min, p = 0.0023) and sleep efficiency (SE) (83.90 ± 1.6 vs. 81.01 ± 1.50%, p = 0.0342). Polysomnography results also favored the test group, with higher adjusted final means TST (358.90 ± 19.75 vs. 322.11 ± 17.66 min, p = 0.0457) and SE (86.86 ± 3.31 vs. 79.60 ± 2.99%, p = 0.0182), and lower wake after sleep onset (39.26 ± 10.57 vs. 68.15 ± 9.60 min, p = 0.0042). Conclusions Heukharang extract may enhance sleep quality and quantity and is deemed safe, suggesting its potential as a functional food for improving sleep. Full article

Background. Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that disrupt normal sleep patterns and are among the most common clinical challenges faced today. An innovative device that employs nanotechnology to deliver beneficial effects on the human body is the Taopatch® (Tao Technologies, Vedelago, Italy). This study aims to assess the effectiveness of such nanotechnology-based devices in improving sleep quality. Methods. This study included only female participants, as a review of the literature indicated that sleep disorders are more prevalent in women than in men. A total of 30 subjects (with a mean age of 44.8 ± 3.44 years) were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. Sleep quality was evaluated three times throughout the study for each participant using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The Taopatch® devices were applied using a specialized pillow. Results. The experimental group showed significantly better sleep quality (p < 0.001) compared to the control group. Conclusions. Our findings suggest that the application of the Taopatch® has a positive impact on sleep quality by optimizing posture, aligning the cervical spine, and promoting muscle relaxation. This device uses advanced nanotechnology to enhance various physiological functions, contributing to better overall well-being. Full article

Background: Comprehensive geriatric assessments (CGAs) are necessary to address the needs of people with human immunodeficiency virus infection (PWH) aged ≥ 50 years and ensure that they receive high-quality care. We aimed to identify the most effective tests from an extensive CGA to develop a short CGA. Methods: This observational, cross-sectional, and analytical study was conducted in three phases: (1) describing PWH aged ≥ 50 and matched controls; (2) jointly analyzing data to identify the most effective tests from the original CGA and develop a short version; and (3) applying the short CGA separately to both groups. Results: The most effective tests—the Lawton scale, SPPB, Barber questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Cognitive Complaints questionnaire—were used to create a short CGA. It identified abnormalities in 77% of PWH flagged by the full CGA, though 65% with the normal short CGA results had at least one abnormal result in the full version. Most false negatives were due to the excluded Hearing-Dependent Activities scale. Conclusions: These findings represent an initial step toward developing a short CGA for an easy and rapid identification of PWH aged ≥ 50, beyond a frailty assessment, who may benefit from early clinical management. Analysis of Psychological and Sleep Quality Characteristics of Young and Adult Para-Athletes with Cerebral Palsy During Competitive Period

Emotional processes and sleep quality have become fundamental aspects of performance in Paralympic sports among elite and youth athletes. The objective of this study was to compare levels of depression, stress, anxiety, and sleep quality among youth and adult athletes with cerebral palsy (CP) belonging to the national CP Football team in Chile. A total of 10 adult and 12 youth national team athletes participated, completing the DASS-21, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale questionnaires. The athletes were competing in their respective categories at the 2024 Parapan American Games. A cross-sectional design was used to compare the parameters of depression, stress, anxiety, and sleep quality of youth and adult male athletes with CP of a national team selected to compete in a regional event. Significant differences were found where young athletes had lower levels of depression (χ2 = 4.77, p = 0.02, OR = 11.0) and anxiety (χ2 = 6.71, p = 0.01, OR = 16.5). Similar differences could be observed in favor of young athletes in sleep latency (p = 0.04; d = 0.34), bedtime (p = 0.02; d = 0.20), total hours of sleep (p = 0.04; d = 0.10), subjective sleep quality (p = 0.002; d = 0.56), and objective sleep quality (p < 0.001; d = 0.65). This study suggests that adult para-athletes from a national CP Football team exhibit higher levels of depression and anxiety compared to their youth counterparts. Additionally, objective and subjective measures show that adults experience poorer sleep quality. These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions by psychological support teams, aiming to enhance athlete performance by promoting healthy habits that address these mental health challenges. Physical activity, sedentary behaviour, sleep quality, and anxiety are interrelated factors that play a critical role in physical and mental health. However, limited evidence exists on their associations within the Saudi Arabian context. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between physical activity, sedentary behaviour, sleep quality, and anxiety symptoms among healthy, pain-free adults in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted between December 2024 and April 2025 using validated Arabic versions of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), the Brief Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (B-PSQI), and the Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and multivariable linear regression models. A total of 185 participants (mean age = 33.99 ± 12.57 years; 69.73% female) were included. The average total physical activity was 1730.02 ± 2109.24 MET min/week, and the mean sedentary time was 6.77 ± 4.69 h/day. No significant associations were found between physical activity and either sleep quality or anxiety symptoms. Similarly, sedentary behaviour time was not significantly associated with sleep quality or anxiety symptoms. However, poorer sleep quality was significantly associated with higher anxiety levels. These findings highlight the importance of sleep quality in mental health strategies for healthy adults in Saudi Arabia. Full article
