Wastewater contamination with synthetic organic dyes is a significant environmental challenge. Zinc oxide (ZnO) has attracted considerable attention as a non-toxic, multifunctional material for electronics, optics, piezoelectric devices, and photocatalysis, where its performance is strongly governed by morphology. In this work, we investigate the effect of hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) on the formation and photocatalytic behavior of ZnO nanostructures synthesized from different zinc precursors, namely zinc acetate and zinc nitrate, via a one-step sol–gel process at low temperature without any post-treatment. All samples crystallize in the hexagonal wurtzite phase without detectable impurities, and the incorporation of HMTA leads to smaller, more uniform rod- and flake-like nanostructures. Although ZnO derived from zinc acetate without HMTA exhibits the highest specific surface area, ZnO synthesized in the presence of HMTA shows more favorable crystallinity, morphology, and pore connectivity, which together enhance charge separation and reactive oxygen species generation. As a result, ZnO samples synthesized with HMTA exhibit improved photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B under UV irradiation. Full article

The remediation of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) requires innovative, high-efficiency, and sustainable technologies. Here, we investigate active polymeric membranes incorporating TiO2/ZnO heterojunctions for synergistic sono-enhanced photocatalytic water treatment under both UV and visible-light irradiation. TiO2/ZnO composites were synthesized and characterized, confirming the formation of type II heterojunctions with tailored optical properties for sunlight-driven photocatalysis. The catalysts were integrated into poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) matrixes using electrospinning (ES) and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). ES membranes, specifically the ZnO-rich heterojunction within a PVDF-TrFE matrix (3T-7Z@TrFE ES), achieved the highest performance toward ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation, reaching 71 and 57% under UV and visible light, respectively. The hybridization of the method by coupling ultrasound induced significant synergistic effects, with relative enhancement factors up to 1.38. Furthermore, the sono-enhanced photocatalytic pathway shifted the degradation mechanism towards the early fragmentation of the harmful piperazine ring, yielding a more sustainable degradation process. In addition, the composite membranes showed selective antibacterial activity against S. aureus, making this a multifunctional platform able not only to degrade CECs but also to mitigate membrane fouling. Overall, this work demonstrates the potential of tailored heterojunctions and composite membranes as sustainable platforms for the remediation of recalcitrant CECs in water, highlighting the synergy between photoactivity, piezoelectricity, and mechanistic control. Piezo-enhanced photocatalysis is progressively considered an eco-friendly technology for contaminant removal, harvesting not only solar energy but also mechanical vibrations found in nature. Multiferroic materials present a coupled effect of various properties and can potentially increase the applicability of this process. In this study, Cr- doped bismuth ferrite thin film was deposited on SrTiO3 substrate by HiPIMS, and its photo-, piezo-, and piezo-photocatalytic efficiencies in Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation were analyzed. The highest removal percentage was found under the simultaneous exposure of visible light and mechanical vibrations, reaching 86.2% after 180 min. The calculated efficiencies for photo- and piezocatalysis were 12.2% and 83.7%, respectively. The rate constant (k) for piezo-photocatalysis was 16.1 times higher than that found during photocatalytic experiments. To assess the contribution of each reactive species to the decomposition process, different reagents were added to the Rhodamine B contaminated solution. The results revealed that when p-benzoquinone was used, the degradation efficiency declined significantly from 86.2% to 37.6%, suggesting that superoxide radicals (O2•−) play a key role in decomposing RhB molecules. The structural, chemical, optical, and ferroelectric changes caused by the catalytic processes were analyzed and linked to the proposed degradation mechanisms. The poor photocatalytic efficiency was linked to an improper band structure and an improper polarization orientation of the ferroelectric domains in the as-deposited film. The degradation mechanisms in piezo-photocatalysis were driven partly by the band bending caused by mechanical vibrations and partly by the reorientation of the induced polarization of the domains in the unstrained film. Transition metal (TM)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) and zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanocrystals exhibit complex correlations between crystal structure, defect chemistry, vibrational properties, and magnetic behavior that are strongly governed by synthesis route and dopant incorporation mechanisms. This review critically summarizes recent progress on Fe-, Mn-, and Co-doped ZnO and ZrO2 nanocrystals synthesized by wet chemical, hydrothermal, and microwave-assisted hydrothermal methods, with emphasis on synthesis-driven phase evolution and apparent solubility limits. ZnO and ZrO2 are treated as complementary host lattices: ZnO is a semiconducting, piezoelectric oxide with narrow solubility limits for most 3d dopants, while ZrO2 is a dielectric, polymorphic oxide in which transition metal doping may stabilize tetragonal or cubic phases. Structural and microstructural studies using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy demonstrate that at low dopant concentrations, TM ions may be partially incorporated into the host lattice, giving rise to diluted or defect-mediated magnetic behavior. When solubility limits are exceeded, nanoscopic secondary oxide phases emerge, leading to superparamagnetic, ferrimagnetic, or spin-glass-like responses. Magnetic measurements, including DC magnetization and AC susceptibility, reveal a continuous evolution from paramagnetism in lightly doped samples to dynamic magnetic states characteristic of nanoscale magnetic entities. Vibrational spectroscopy highlights phonon confinement, surface optical phonons, and disorder-activated modes that sensitively reflect nanocrystal size, lattice strain, and defect populations, and often correlate with magnetic dynamics. Rather than classifying these materials as diluted magnetic semiconductors, this review adopts a synthesis-driven and correlation-based framework that links dopant incorporation, local structural disorder, vibrational fingerprints, and magnetic response. By emphasizing multi-technique characterization strategies required to distinguish intrinsic from extrinsic magnetic contributions, this review provides practical guidelines for interpreting magnetism in TM-doped oxide nanocrystals and outlines implications for applications in photocatalysis, sensing, biomedicine, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Zinc stannate (ZnSnO3), a lead-free perovskite oxide, possesses a wide band gap along with ferroelectric and piezoelectric characteristics, but its practical use is limited by nanoparticle agglomeration and poor mechanical stability. In this study, ZnSnO3 nanoparticles were synthesized via a chemical precipitation method and incorporated into electrospun polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofibers to overcome these drawbacks. XRD confirmed the formation of orthorhombic perovskite ZnSnO3, while FTIR verified successful embedding into the PVP matrix without chemical degradation. UV–Vis analysis revealed a slight blue shift in the absorption edge, with the optical band gap widening from 3.61 eV (ZnSnO3) to 3.73 eV (ZnSnO3/PVP), accompanied by enhanced visible light absorption. SEM images showed that agglomerated ZnSnO3 nanoparticles were transformed into smooth, bead-free nanofibers with diameters ranging from 0.22 to 1.80 μm. The synergy between ZnSnO3 crystallinity and PVP flexibility imparts structural integrity, tunable optical behavior, and mechanical robustness, making the hybrid nanofibers promising candidates for photocatalysis, flexible optoelectronics, and energy-harvesting applications. The metal-free polymeric semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has emerged as a promising material for photocatalytic applications due to its responsiveness to visible light, adjustable electronic structure, and stability. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in preparation strategies, including thermal polycondensation, solvothermal synthesis, and template methods. Additionally, it discusses modification approaches such as heterojunction construction, elemental doping, defect engineering, morphology control, and cocatalyst loading. Furthermore, it explores the diverse applications of g-C3N4-based materials in photocatalysis, including hydrogen (H2) evolution, carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction, pollutant degradation, and the emerging field of piezoelectric photocatalysis. Particular attention is given to g-C3N4 composites that are rationally designed to enhance charge separation and light utilization. Additionally, the synergistic mechanism of photo–piezocatalysis is examined, wherein a mechanically induced piezoelectric field facilitates carrier separation and surface reactions. Despite significant advancements, challenges persist, including limited visible-light absorption, scalability issues, and uncertainties in the multi-field coupling mechanisms. The aim of this review is to provide guidelines for future research that may lead to the development of high-performance and energy-efficient catalytic systems in the context of environmental and energy applications. Piezoelectric and photocatalytic technologies use mechanical and light energy to decompose environmental contaminants, demonstrating a beneficial synergistic impact. This investigation employs a two-step hydrothermal-calcination technique to synthesize N-doped MoS2 photocatalytic materials. The ideal catalyst, N-MoS2-3, utilizing the synergistic effect of piezoelectric–photocatalysis processes, attained a TC degradation rate of 90.8% in 60 min. The kinetic constant (0.0374 min−1) is 1.75 times greater than the combined rates of single photocatalysis and piezoelectric catalysis, indicating a notable synergistic impact. The material has 80% degradation efficiency after five cycles, indicating its remarkable resilience. Mechanistic investigations reveal that nitrogen doping establishes an internal electric field by modulating the S-Mo-S charge distribution. Photogenerated electrons move to generate •O2, while holes accumulate internally. The ultrasound-induced piezoelectric polarization field interacts with the photogenerated electric field in reverse, thereby synergistically improving carrier separation efficiency and facilitating redox processes. This study emphasizes the viability of non-metal doping as a method for modifying the properties of two-dimensional materials, offering a novel approach to enhance the synergistic attributes of piezoelectric and photocatalytic processes. This technology possesses significant promise for environmental restoration through the utilization of solar and mechanical energy. Full article

Piezo-photocatalysis is a promising solution to address both water pollution and the energy crisis. However, the recombination of electron–hole pairs often leads to poor performance, rendering current piezoelectric photocatalysts unsuitable for industrial water treatment. To overcome this issue, oxygen vacancies (V) and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are introduced into Bi4Ti3O12 (BTO) nanosheets, forming Schottky junctions (BTO-V/Ag). These 2D/3D structures offer more exposed active sites, shorter carrier separation distances, and improved piezo-photocatalytic performance. Additionally, the photothermal effect of Ag NPs supplies additional energy to counteract adsorption changes caused by active species, promoting the generation of more active species. The rate constant of the optimized BTO-V/Ag-2 in the piezo-photocatalytic degradation of nizatidine (NZTD) was 4.62 × 10−2 min−1 (with a removal rate of 98.34%), which was 4.32 times that of the initial BTO. Moreover, the composite catalyst also showed good temperature and pH response. This study offers new insights into the regulatory mechanisms of piezo-photocatalysis at the Schottky junction. Piezoelectric photocatalysis can effectively suppress the recombination of electron holes during the course of photocatalysis, which has been widely applied in environmental and energy catalysis. Its advantage is that when the piezoelectric effect happens, a built-in electric field is formed inside the catalyst, which improves the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers and obtains more excellent photocatalytic performance. The efficient conversion of mechanical energy to chemical energy can be realized through the synergistic effect of the piezoelectric effect, and photocatalysis is greatly significant in solving the energy crisis and providing environmental protection. Therefore, we organized a more complete review to better understand the mechanism and system of piezoelectric photocatalysis. We briefly introduce the principle of the piezoelectric effect, the existing types of piezoelectric photocatalysts, the practical application scenarios, and the future challenges and feasible methods to improve catalytic efficiency. The purpose of this review is to help us broaden the idea of designing piezoelectric photocatalysts, clarify the future research direction, and put it into more fields of environmental protection and energy reuse. Piezoelectric photocatalysis improves catalytic activity by preventing photogenerated carrier recombination. Hence, three morphologies of BaTiO3 (BTO) were successfully prepared for the piezoelectric photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC, C(TC) = 40 mg/L). The tetragonal-phase BaTiO3 nanoparticles (BTO-NPs) showed the best performance in comparison with cubic-phase nanoflowers (BTO-Nf) and cubic-phase coral-like structures (BTO-Nc) under the same conditions (C(BTO) = 0.6 g/L). When the loading of BTO-NPs was reduced to 0.2 g/L, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency was lowered from 64.2% to 50.1%. However, the 0.6 g/L BTO-NPs increased by only 12.8% after piezoelectricity induction. On the contrary, the BTO-NPs’ degradation effect of 0.2 g/L with the piezoelectric effect was greatly improved from 50.1% to 78.0%, with an increase rate of 27.9%. As the quantity of catalyst was decreased, the increased inter-particle voids made the lattice more susceptible to deformation by external forces, producing a more pronounced piezoelectric effect. These findings indicate that crystal structure and catalyst loading are critical factors in increasing piezoelectric photocatalytic performance. This article emphasizes the application value of piezoelectric photocatalysis in degrading organic pollutants, and provides practical guidelines for optimizing its performance. Full article

An internal built electric field can suppress the recombination of electron–hole pairs and distinctly enhance the catalytic activity of a photocatalyst. Novel t-Ag/0.95AgNbO3-0.05LiTaO3 heterojunction was prepared by reducing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on the surface of the piezoelectric powder 0.95AgNbO3-0.05LiTaO3 (0.05-ANLT) using a simple mechanical milling method. The effects of milling time and excitation source used for the degradation of organic dye by heterojunction catalysts were investigated. The results demonstrate that the optimized 1.5-Ag/0.05-ANLT heterojunction removes 97% RhB within 40 min, which is 7.8 times higher than that of single piezoelectric catalysis and 25.4 times higher than that of single photocatalysis. The significant enhancement of photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the synergistic coupling of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and the piezoelectric effect. Full article

This work addresses the global sustainable development concerns by investigating the enhancement of piezo-photocatalytic efficiency in bismuth ferrite-based thin films synthesized using reactive high-power impulse magnetron sputtering. The influence of substrate type and Cr addition on structural, optical and ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite (BFO) based thin films was investigated. X-ray diffraction measurements showed the formation of different phases depending on the substrate used for sample growth. Compared to the BFO film deposited on FTO (F-SnO2), the Cr-doped BFO (BFCO) sample on SrTiO3 (STO) exhibits higher photodegradation efficiency (52.3% vs. 27.8%). The enhanced photocatalytic activity of BFCO is associated with a lower energy band gap (1.62 eV vs. 1.77 eV). The application of ultrasonic-wave vibrations simultaneously with visible light improved 2.85 times and 1.86 times the photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of BFO/FTO and BFCO/STO catalysts, respectively. The piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) measurements showed that both catalysts exhibit ferroelectric behavior, but a higher piezoelectric potential was evidenced in the case of the BFO/FTO thin film. The enhancement of piezo-photodegradation efficiency was mainly attributed to the piezoelectric-driven separation and transport of photo-generated carriers toward the surface of the photocatalyst. The internal electric field within a piezoelectric material can effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, thus serving as a means to enhance photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we synthesized a Na0.5Bi4.5Ti4O15 (NBT) catalyst by the hydrothermal method and optimized its catalytic performance by simple high-voltage poling. When applying light and mechanical stirring on a 2 kV mm−1 poled NBT sample, almost 100% of Rhodamine B solution could be degraded in 120 min, and the reaction rate constant reached as high as 28.36 × 10−3 min−1, which was 4.2 times higher than that of the unpoled NBT sample. The enhanced piezo-photocatalytic activity is attributed to the poling-enhanced internal electric field, which facilitates the efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. Our work provides a new option and idea for the development of piezo-photocatalysts for environmental remediation and pollutant treatment. Full article

The creation of multi-stimuli-sensitive composite polymer–inorganic materials is a practical scientific task. The combination of photoactive magneto-piezoelectric nanomaterials and ferroelectric polymers offers new properties that can help solve environmental and energy problems. Using the doctor blade casting method with the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technique, we synthesized a hybrid polymer–inorganic nanocomposite porous membrane based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3/BFO). We studied the samples using transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM/SEM), infrared Fourier spectroscopy (FTIR), total transmission and diffuse reflection, fluorescence microscopy, photoluminescence (PL), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and piezopotential measurements. Our results demonstrate that the addition of BFO increases the proportion of the polar phase from 76.2% to 93.8% due to surface ion–dipole interaction. We also found that the sample exhibits laser-induced fluorescence, with maxima at 475 and 665 nm depending on the presence of nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, our piezo-photocatalytic experiments showed that under the combined actions of ultrasonic treatment and UV–visible light irradiation, the reaction rate increased by factors of 68, 13, 4.2, and 1.6 compared to sonolysis, photolysis, piezocatalysis, and photocatalysis, respectively. This behavior is explained by the piezoelectric potential and the narrowing of the band gap of the composite due to the mechanical stress caused by ultrasound. Full article

The piezoelectric effect of Bi4Ti3O12 and the surface plasmon effect of Au were used to improve the photogenerated electron–hole separation and optical absorption. The results of the characterization showed successful preparation of the orthorhombic Bi4Ti3O12 nanofibers, in which the absorption band edge was 426 nm with a 2.91 eV band gap. The piezo-photocatalytic activity of the Bi4Ti3O12 was tested through the degradation of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin under three different experimental conditions: light, vibration, and light plus vibration. All of the ciprofloxacin was degraded after 80 min in piezo-photocatalytic conditions, with a piezo-photocatalytic degradation rate of 0.03141 min−1, which is 1.56 and 3.88 times, respectively, that of photocatalysis and piezo-catalysis. After loading Au on the Bi4Ti3O12, the degradation efficiency was improved under all three conditions, and the piezoelectric photocatalytic efficiency of Au-Bi4Ti3O12 for ciprofloxacin degradation was able to reach 100% in 60 min with a piezo-photocatalytic degradation rate of 0.06157 min−1. The results of the photocurrent and impedance tests indicated that the photocurrent density of Bi4Ti3O12 nanofibers loaded with Au is increased from 5.08 × 10−7 A/cm2 to 8.17 × 10−6 A/cm2, which is 16.08 times higher than without loading the Au. This work provides an effective way to improve the conversion efficiency of photocatalysis to degrade organic pollutants by combining the plasmon effect and the piezoelectric effect. Full article
