The present study evaluated the effect of adding 0% (control), 30%, 40% and 50% SPMs (small-peptide chelating trace minerals) to replace ITMs (inorganic trace minerals) in the diets of Litopenaeus vannamei; 720 shrimp were randomly assigned to four treatments (six replicates per group, 30 shrimp per replicate) in a 42-day feeding trial. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) among the control, 40% SPM and 50% SPM groups in terms of the survival rate, weight gain rate, specific growth rate, hepatosomatic index, condition factor, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, or protein efficiency ratio; however, protein efficiency ratio was reduced in the 30% SPM group (p < 0.05). Glucose, triglyceride, and aspartate aminotransferase levels in the hemolymph of the 30% SPM group were significantly increased (p < 0.05), while the glucose and aspartate aminotransferase levels were also significantly increased in the 40% SPM group (p < 0.05). In the 50% SPM group, the glucose and triglyceride levels were also significantly increased (p < 0.05). Hepatopancreatic alkaline phosphatase activity was elevated at 40% SPM, and alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, glutathione peroxidase, and total antioxidant capacity activities were significantly increased in the 50% SPM group (p < 0.05). The moisture content and drip loss were reduced in both the 40% and 50% SPM groups (p < 0.05). Therefore, replacing 40–50% ITMs with SPMs can maintain growth performance while enhancing physiological functions. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that the incorporation of 30–50% SPMs into one’s diet constitutes a viable alternative to 100% ITMs. Full article

High nighttime temperature (HNT) due to asymmetric diurnal warming threatens wheat productivity. This study evaluated the effect of HNT on wheat phenology, physiology, and yield through field and controlled environment experiments in Central Queensland, Australia. Two wheat genotypes, Faraday and AVT#6, were assessed under three sowing dates—1 May (Early), 15 June (Mid), and 1 August (Late)—within the recommended sowing window for the region. In a parallel growth chamber study, the plants were exposed to two nighttime temperature regimes, of 15 °C (normal) and 20 °C (high), with consistent daytime conditions from booting to maturity. Late sowing resulted in shortened vegetative growth and grain filling periods and increased exposure to HNT during the reproductive phase. This resulted in elevated floret sterility, lower grain weight, and up to 40% yield loss. AVT#6 exhibited greater sensitivity to HNT despite maturing earlier. Leaf gas exchange analysis revealed increased nighttime respiration (Rn) and reduced assimilation (A), resulting in higher Rn/A ratio for late-sown crops. The results from controlled environment chambers resembled trends of the field experiment, producing lower grain yield and biomass under HNT. Cumulative nighttime hours above 20 °C correlated more strongly with yield losses than daytime heat. These findings highlight the need for HNT-tolerant genotypes and optimized sowing schedules under future climate scenarios. Full article

Fresh fruit are highly perishable commodities, facing significant postharvest losses primarily due to physiological deterioration and microbial spoilage. Conventional preservation methods often face limitations regarding safety, residue, and environmental impact. Because of its rapid decomposition and low-residue-impact characteristics, ozone has proven superior as an efficient and eco-friendly solution for preserving fruit quality after harvest. The maturation and aging processes of kiwifruit are closely linked to the involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the effects of intermittent ozone treatment (21.4 mg/m3, applied for 0, 1, 3, or 5 h weekly) on ROS metabolism, the antioxidant defense system, and storage quality of kiwifruit during cold storage (0.0 ± 0.5 °C). The results showed ozone treatment slowed the decline in titratable acid (TA) content and fruit firmness, inhibited increases in total soluble solids (TSSs) and weight loss, and maintained the storage quality. Additionally, ozone treatment enhanced the activities of antioxidant-related enzymes. This includes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Furthermore, it delayed the reduction in ascorbate (ASA), glutathione (GSH), total phenolic compounds, and flavonoid content, while also preventing the accumulation of ROS and the rise in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. In summary, the results indicate that ozone treatment enhances the antioxidant capacity of kiwifruit by increasing the structural integrity of cell membranes, preserving the structural integrity of cell membranes, and effectively maintaining the storage quality of the fruit. Despite the current level of public immunity to SARS-CoV-2, the early inflammatory events associated with respiratory distress in COVID-19 patients are not fully elucidated. Syrian golden hamsters, facultative hibernators, recapitulate the phenotype of SARS-CoV-2-induced severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)—induced severe acute lung injury seen in patients. In this study, we describe the predominance of the innate immune response in hamsters inoculated with four different SARS-CoV-2 variants, underscoring phenotypic differences among them. Severe inflammatory lung injury was chronologically associated with acute and significant weight loss, mainly in animals inoculated with A.2 and Delta variants. Omicron-infected animals had lower overall histopathology scores compared to other variants. We highlight the central role of endothelial injury and activation in the pathogenesis of experimental SARS-CoV-2 infection in hamsters, characterised by the presence of proliferative type I and type II pneumocytes with abundant surfactant expression, thereby maintaining hyperinflated alveolar fields. Additionally, there was evidence of intrapulmonary lymphatic vessel proliferation, which was accompanied by a lack of detectable microthrombosis in the lung parenchyma. However, white microthrombi were observed in lymphatic vessels. Our findings suggest that the physiological compensatory mechanisms that maintain respiratory homeostasis in Golden Syrian hamsters prevent severe respiratory distress and death after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Utilizing edible films/coatings promises to extend the shelf life of fruits by controlling various physiological parameters (e.g., respiration and transpiration rates), maintaining firmness, and delaying fruit senescence. The influence of composite-based edible coatings made from sodium or calcium caseinate: carboxymethyl chitosan (75:25) on the postharvest quality of fresh blueberries was assessed over a 28-day storage period, on the basis of weight loss and changes in pH, firmness, color, titratable acidity, soluble solids content, mold and yeast count, and respiration rate. The pH of the blueberries increased over the period of storage, with significant differences observed between uncoated and coated (e.g., pH was 3.89, 3.17, and 3.62 at the end of the storage time for uncoated, Ca 75-1% SO, and Na 75-1% SO, respectively. Desirable lower pH values at the end of storage were obtained with the calcium caseinate formulations. Over the duration of storage, other quality parameters (e.g., firmness) were better retained in coated fruits compared to the uncoated (control) one. At the last storage day, the firmness of the uncoated sample was 0.67 N·mm−1 while the sodium and calcium caseinate was 0.63 and 0.81 N.mm−1, respectively. Moreover, the microbial growth was reduced in coated fruits, indicating the effectiveness of coatings in preserving fruit quality. The mold /yeast count was 1.4 and 2.3 log CFU/g for CaCa 75-1% SO and NaCa 75-1% SO compared with uncoated with 4.2 log CFU/g. Adding soybean oil to the caseinate–carboxymethyl chitosan composite edible coating has the potential to positively influence retention of various quality parameters of blueberries, thereby extending their shelf life and maintaining overall quality. Further research could explore the optimization of coating formulations and application methods to enhance their effectiveness in preserving fruit quality during storage. Full article

Sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is becoming increasingly popular in China, but its postharvest quality deteriorates significantly during harvest storage and transport. Here, we investigated the efficiency of different modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) treatments on the quality and physiology of ‘Meizao’ sweet cherry during 60 days of cold storage (0 ± 0.5 °C). Fruits were sealed in four types of MAP low-density polyethylene (LDPE) liners (PE20, PE30, PE40, and PE50), with unsealed 20 μm LDPE packaging bags used as the control. Our findings demonstrated that PE30 packaging established an optimal gas composition (7.0~7.7% O2 and 3.6~3.9% CO2) that effectively preserved ‘Meizao’ sweet cherry quality. It maintained the fruit color, firmness, soluble solid content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), and vitamin C (Vc) content while simultaneously delaying deteriorative processes such as weight loss, pedicel browning, and fruit decay. These results indicate that PE30 was the most suitable treatment for preserving the quality of ‘Meizao’ sweet cherries during cold storage. Furthermore, physiological research showed that significant inhibition of respiration rate was achieved by PE30, accompanied by maintained activities of antioxidant enzymes (CAT, POD, and SOD), which consequently led to reduced accumulations of ethanol and malondialdehyde (MDA) during cold storage. To date, no systematic studies have investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of ‘Meizao’ to different thickness-dependent LDPE-MAP conditions. These observations highlight the power of the optimized PE30 packaging as an effective method for extending the fruit storage life, delaying postharvest senescence, and maintaining fruit quality of ‘Meizao’ sweet cherry. Opuntia ficus-indica L. (Mill) belongs to the Cactaceae family. The plant produces edible and juicy fruits called cactus pear, recognized for their pleasant flavor and functional properties. However, the fruits have a short shelf life, hard seeds, and the presence of glochidia in the pericarpel. Recently, by inducing parthenocarpy, seedless fruits of cactus pear have been obtained. They have attractive colors, soft and small seminal residues, with a similar flavor to their original seeded counterparts. Nevertheless, their postharvest physiological behavior has not yet been documented. The aim of this study was to compare the biochemical, anatomical, and physiological characteristics of pollinated fruits, CP30 red and CP40 yellow varieties, with their parthenocarpic counterparts (CP30-P and CP40-P), obtained by the application of growth regulators in preanthesis. Fruits of each type were harvested at horticultural maturity, and analyses were carried out on both pulp and pericarpel (peel), using a completely randomized design. Results showed that red fruits CP30 and CP30-P showed higher concentrations of betacyanins in pulp (13.4 and 18.4 mg 100 g−1 FW) and in pericarpel (25.9 and 24.1 mg 100 g−1 FW), respectively; flavonoid content was significantly higher in partenocarpic fruits compared with the pollinated ones. Parthenocarpy mainly affected the shelf life, in pollinated fruits, CP30 was 14 days but 32 days in CP30-P; for CP40, it was 16 days, and 30 days in CP40-P. Also, the partenocarpic fruits were smaller but with a thicker pericarpel, and lower stomatal frequency. Overall, parthenocarpic fruits represent a viable alternative for commercial production due to their extended shelf life, lower weight loss, and soft but edible pericarpel. Full article

Background: PTEN is a tumor suppressor that controls many pathophysiological pathways, including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and invasiveness. Although PTEN down-modulation is a critical event in neoplastic progression, it becomes apparent that transient and local inhibition of PTEN activity might be beneficial for the healing process. Methods: In the present study, we investigated the impact of PTEN invalidation in mouse intestinal epithelium under a physiological condition and after dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) treatment to induce experimental colitis. PTEN conditional knockout was induced in intestinal epithelial cells after crossing villin-Cre and PTENflox/flox mice. Results: PTEN invalidation alleviates experimental colitis induced by DSS, as evidenced by decreased weight loss during the acute phase, the lower expression of inflammation markers, including the proinflammatory cytokines IFN-γ, CXCL1 and CXCL2, reduced mucosal lesions, and faster recovery after resolution of inflammation. This protective effect might result in part from the sustained proliferation of colonic epithelium, leading to hyperplasia and increased colonic crypt depth under physiological conditions, which was further exacerbated in the vicinity of mucosal injury induced by DSS treatment. Furthermore, PTEN knockout decreased paracellular permeability, thereby enhancing the intestinal barrier function. This process was associated with the reinforcement of claudin-3 immunostaining, especially on the surface epithelium of villin-Cre PTENflox/flox mice. Conclusions: PTEN inactivation exerts a protective effect on the onset of colitis, and the transient and local down-modulation of PTEN might constitute an approach to drive recovery following acute intestinal inflammation. The present study investigated the efficacy of edible coatings formulated with gellan gum and lemon peel extract (LPE) in preserving the postharvest quality of cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme). Selected fruits exhibiting uniform ripeness and free from defects were sanitized and coated with solutions containing different HAG/LAG (high- and low-acyl gellan gum) ratios, incorporating 4.0% (w/v) LPE. Physicochemical and physiological parameters, including soluble solids content, weight loss, pH, titratable acidity, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide and ethylene production, skin redness (a*/b* ratio), and decay incidence, were systematically assessed under storage conditions of 25 °C and 70% relative humidity. HAG-coated fruits showed the lowest weight loss (1.08%), higher soluble solids (7.11 °Brix), and greater firmness (3.11 N/mm2) compared to uncoated controls. Moreover, they exhibited reduced oxygen consumption (0.06 mg·kg−1·h−1), ethylene production (3.10 mg·kg−1·h−1), and decay rate (2%). Redness was better preserved, and decay rates were substantially (p < 0.05) reduced throughout the storage period. These findings highlight the potential of HAG-based edible coatings enriched with LPE as an innovative postharvest technology to extend shelf life, maintain quality attributes, and reduce postharvest losses in cherry tomatoes. Postharvest losses and limited physiological knowledge restrict the conservation and year-round availability of underutilized crops such as Dioscorea trifida. This study characterized the postharvest behavior of Colombian purple D. trifida tubers and evaluated low-cost, GRAS-status technologies to improve storage performance in smallholder production systems. Tubers were stored for 34 days at ambient conditions (20 °C, 90% RH) and compared with treatments including cold storage, calcium pretreatments combined with Aloe vera-based coatings, and short-duration hot water immersion. Over storage, total carbohydrates increased, while potassium remained at substantial levels until the final day. Weight loss and respiration declined steadily, and sprouting was absent, suggesting extended endodormancy in this genotype. Major deterioration causes observed upon reception included fragmentation, insect damage, and surface molds, highlighting the importance of improved sanitation and mechanical protection during harvest, early postharvest stages, and transportation. Edible coatings enhanced antioxidant activity and increased malic and succinic acid concentrations. Cold storage at 3 °C reduced weight loss more effectively than storage at 12 or 20 °C, although citric acid accumulation was greater at the latter temperature. Among all treatments, immersion at 55 °C for 5 min was the most promising, offering a scalable, low-input option to extend shelf life in neglected yam species. Full article

Background: Considering that the prevalence of obesity has risen rapidly in recent decades, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a carbohydrate mouth rinse (CMR) on the outcomes of aerobic training among adult men with obesity, focusing particularly on the effects of repeated use on body composition and exercise performance. Methods: The intervention targeted 20 men with obesity in their 20s and 30s randomly assigned to either a CMR group (n = 10) or a placebo mouth rinse (PMR) group (n = 10). Both groups completed treadmill-based aerobic training three times per week for eight weeks. Prior to each session, participants used a mouth rinse at 60, 40, and 20 s before the start of each exercise, holding either a 6% maltodextrin solution (CMR) or purified water (PMR) in their mouths for 5 to 10 s before expectorating. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included body composition (body weight and body fat percentage), resting metabolic rate (RMR), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), and exercise performance (rate of perceived exertion [RPE], exercise distance, speed, and time). Data were analyzed using 2 × 2 repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: Following the intervention, the CMR group showed significantly greater improvements than the PMR group did in body fat percentage, RMR, VO2max, exercise distance, speed, and time (p < 0.01). However, the interaction effect for RPE was not statistically significant between the groups (p = 0.175). Overall, the repeated use of the CMR during aerobic training contributed to enhanced exercise performance and favorable physiological changes without additional caloric intake. Conclusions: A CMR may be a practical and non-caloric ergogenic aid to support exercise performance and metabolic function in individuals with obesity. Its repeated use during aerobic training appears to be effective and safe, especially when fasting while exercising, when improving endurance without compromising fat loss is essential. Full article

(1) Eating disorders (EDs), characterized by symptoms such as restrictive eating, binge eating, compensatory behaviors, and emotional dysregulation, are associated with autonomic nervous system dysregulation, which may contribute to cardiovascular complications. This review systematically examines the relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and core ED symptoms to identify specific autonomic patterns linked to behaviors like fasting, binge eating, and emotional dysregulation. (2) A total of 16 cross-sectional and longitudinal studies were narratively synthesized following PRISMA guidelines. All studies were selected from the Science Direct, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. (3) Findings indicate that individuals with anorexia nervosa exhibit blunted sympathetic reactivity and reduced parasympathetic flexibility, particularly during stress or physical activity, with HRV measures normalizing after weight restoration. In contrast, binge eating and loss-of-control eating are associated with lower resting HRV, which correlates with the severity of eating behaviors. Reactive HRV also varies with food cues and emotional states, showing complex autonomic responses in individuals with EDs. Emotional dysregulation, consistently marked by reduced high-frequency HRV, is a key feature across these disorders. (4) These results suggest that HRV patterns may serve as physiological markers of ED symptomatology, offering insights for targeted interventions aimed at improving both emotional regulation and cardiovascular health in affected individuals. Yield and Quality Response of Indeterminate Tomatoes to Combined Growing Methods and Rootstock Cultivars

Limited comparative research exists on evaluating the performance of tomato rootstocks under different growing methods, resulting in growers facing challenges when deciding which rootstock and growing method to use for improved yield. The effect of growing methods (scion of a single stem or double stems and non-grafted plant as the control) and rootstock cultivars (Goldbac, SVTX6258, and Booster) on the yield and quality of tomatoes grown in a plastic tunnel and a shade net structure was investigated. The splice grafting method was followed. In a plastic tunnel experiment, grafting and rootstock cultivar did not significantly affect the total soluble solids (TSS), pH, and electrical conductivity (EC) of the tomato juice, as well as percentage weight loss, yield, and fruit firmness. However, the Booster rootstock with a scion of 2 stems had high fruit Mg, K, P, and Fe contents, while the Goldbac rootstock with a scion of 1 stem and 2 stems had high fruit Ca and Fe contents compared to other treatments. The Goldbac and Booster rootstocks grafted to a scion of 2 stems had a high marketable yield. In a shade net experiment, the Booster rootstock with a scion of 2 stems had a high early harvest and total yield of tomatoes, followed by the Goldbac rootstock with a scion of 2 stems. Higher incidences of fruit cracking were noticed on the Booster rootstock grafted with a scion of a single stem. Generally, grafted plants on Booster and Goldbac had improved Mg, K, and P contents, unlike SVTX6258 with a scion of 1 stem. The Booster rootstock with a scion of 2 stems had significantly higher Mg, K, and P contents, while the sodium (Na) fruit content was high on the SVTX6258 rootstock with a scion of 1 stem. Grafting did not significantly affect fruit physiological disorders, weight loss, and TSS, or pH and EC of tomato juice. Grafting with a scion of two stems at the seedling stage significantly improved the tomato fruit mineral content and the total and marketable yield in a plastic tunnel and a shade net structure. Low-frequency alternating electromagnetic fields (LF-AEMF) represent an innovative processing technology with significant potential for extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables by modulating key physiological processes. In this study, the impact of the LF-AEMF intensities (1300, 1800, and 2500 V) on the postharvest preservation of satsuma mandarins was evaluated. Compared to the control group, the LF-AEMF-treated samples exhibited reduced weight loss (0.62% vs. 2.11%), respiration rate (32.73 vs. 40.08 mg/kg·h), and malondialdehyde (MDA) content (40.80 vs. 34.87 nmol/g) after 40 days of storage. In addition, LF-AEMF treatment also effectively preserved titratable acidity (TA) (0.34% vs. 0.30%), vitamin C (Vc) content (7.77 vs. 7.05 g/100 g), and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity (79.757 vs. 62.395 U/g). E-nose analysis and low-field NMR further revealed that the application of LF-AEMF effectively facilitated the superior preservation of the intrinsic flavor profile of the satsuma mandarins and mitigated the loss of free water within the fruit. Overall, this research provides valuable insights for the potential application of LF-AEMF in extending the storage life of citrus fruits, which may also be applicable to other seasonal fruits and vegetables that require long-term storage. From Menopause to Molecular Dysregulation: Proteomic Insights into Obesity-Related Pathways—A Narrative Review

Peri- and postmenopausal women often experience unexplained weight gain despite maintaining consistent dietary and lifestyle habits. While the biological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain poorly understood, physiological and pathophysiological changes during the menopausal transition are likely contributors. Proteomic profiling holds potential for revealing key molecular pathways involved in the pathogenesis of obesity in this population. This review synthesizes current evidence on proteomic alterations linked to overweight and obesity in peri- and postmenopausal women. A structured literature search was performed across Ovid MEDLINE®, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Scopus for studies published between October 2010 and March 2025. Eligible studies included original research involving overweight or obese peri- or postmenopausal women that reported proteomic data. Extracted information encompassed study design, participant characteristics, sample types, and proteomic findings. Identified proteins were cross-referenced with a prior review of consistently dysregulated proteins in obesity. Five studies met the inclusion criteria, collectively revealing consistent proteomic patterns associated with inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and endothelial dysregulation. These included C-reactive protein, Tissue necrotic factor-alpha, interleukins, adiponectin, and endocan. Notably, one study demonstrated that weight loss led to reductions in IL-6, IL-1 receptor antagonist, and CRP, suggesting that obesity-related inflammation may be at least partially reversible. This review provides preliminary evidence linking chronic inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and vascular stress to obesity in peri- and postmenopausal women. These proteomic signatures enhance understanding of menopausal weight gain and highlight the potential of proteomics to guide personalized interventions. However, larger, well-designed prospective studies are needed to confirm these associations and clarify causal pathways. Full article
